Technogym founder talks wellness, fitness and perfect pasta.

As the man credited with helping invent the concept of “wellness,” it’s hardly surprising that Technogym founder and CEO Nerio Alessandri — who travels half of every month — knows how to keep fit on the road.

Trained as an industrial designer, Alessandri created Technogym exactly 30 years ago in his garage. Today, the firm’s iconic yellow-and-black logo is found on fitness machines in thousands of homes and gyms worldwide. And Alessandri hosts prominent fitness fans like Bill Clinton at Technogym’s 37-acre HQ in Cesena, Italy.

As the firm gears up to launch their new Artis cardio line, we spoke to Alessandri about art, Mrs. Obama and the fine balance between travel and wellness.

Fitness is American, but wellness is Italian. Fitness is about training the body; wellness focuses on the body, mind and spirit. It’s a lifestyle that began with the Roman concepts of diet, spa and gym.

I don’t keep a formal “wellness” diet — rather, I try to maintain an ideal balance between protein, fats and carbohydrates. For instance, a favorite dish is comprised of one-third fresh pasta, one-third rare tuna and one-third fresh vegetables, topped with tomato sauce. It’s the typical Mediterranean way of eating.

I like restaurants that combine good food with quality design and atmosphere. In New York, I’ll order the organic yogurt and eggs at the NoMad Hotel for a tasty, healthful breakfast, or the tuna tartare for lunch at Casa Lever , which has an inspiring contemporary art collection, including many works by Warhol. In Milan, I love the pasta pomodoro at the Bulgari Hotel .

One of my favorite things to do when I travel is look at art, because I find art to be a great source of inspiration. I collect works by Julian Schnabel, Anish Kapoor and sculptor Mimmo Paladino. Visiting fairs like Art Basel and London’s Frieze helps me discover new talents.

My home region of Romagna has it all — great artistic heritage, sunny beaches in the town of Rimini and great food and wine. I especially like the Roman mosaics in Ravenna and the centuries-old Malatestiana Library (Europe’s first civic library) in the town of Cesena.

I run to keep fit at home and on the road. In Romagna, I jog through the grape orchards on my family’s estate; in London, through Regent’s Park and in Rome I’ll run through the Villa Borghese.

When traveling, I always bring along my Technogym Wellness Ball. It’s inflatable, so you can easily exercise with it no matter where you’re staying.

I’d like to work with Michelle Obama. I strongly admire her “Let’s Move!” initiative and her dedication to tackling obesity and educating people on the benefits of wellness. If she’s reading this, we’d love to have her as a partner.

We ski in the winter and sail in the summer. We stay at the Hotel Bellevue in Cortina during Christmastime. In summer, we cruise through the Mediterranean — from Sardinia to Capri to the Balearic Islands — on the Istranka, a 150-foot yacht built for former Yugoslavian President Josip Tito, which I refurbished.

My favorite resort is Amanyara in the Turks and Caicos . It’s the right place in the right location — with an elegant design facing a stunning beach.

In this scenario it is urgent to take action. Wellness lifestyle can and should be integrated into all the settings in which people live: at home, at school, at work, in health centres, on vacation. By creating a Wellness Ecosystem, we can help people adopt correct lifestyles, with a positive impact on their quality of life, their health and the Planet’s health too.

Nerio Alessandri is the pioneer of Wellness: in 1993 he introduced the concept of Wellness for the first time in history. 30 years of vision, passion and determination in promoting the culture of Wellness worldwide have turned this ideal into an opportunity for all. For this purpose, in 2003 established the Wellness  Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes the culture of Wellness from the Wellness Valley all over the world with projects and initiatives that focus on people, their health and their happiness.

Nerio Alessandri was born in Cesena on April 8, 1961. In 1983, at the age of 22, he founded Technogym. The first equipment for the gym was designed and built in his own garage at home, as a result of his enthusiasm for sport, his skills as a designer and his passion for design. Today Technogym is Wellness Company, a world leading brand in products and digital technologies for fitness, sport and health . Every day 55 million people train with Technogym in over 100 countries.

The origins of wellness

Wellness is living well by combining mental and physical health: a balanced lifestyle that has its roots in ancient roman culture.

Already two thousand years ago the Latin poet Giovenale with his motto “mens sana in corpore sano” supported the ideal of healthy and balanced living. It was only in 1993 that the concept of Wellness was born as we know it from the vision of Nerio Alessandri: the union of well-being and fitness.  In a world dominated by the American culture of fitness, the pioneering vision of “wellness” triggers a real epochal change: physical exercise is not a hedonistic activity, but it is a source of well-being, essential for physical and mental health.

Wellness is not a fashion or trend of the moment but a lifestyle that must be promoted and disseminated as a social opportunity for the benefit of individuals and the community. An innovative approach that commits each of us to improving the quality of life through education in regular physical activity, a balanced diet and positive mental approach. The Pyramid of Wellness Lifestyle was developed in the 90s by Technogym’s Scientific Department to provide a simple visual guide of the three key components of Wellness.

Wellness Valley Workshop

Nerio Alessandri will once again take part as a speaker at the World Economic Forum, to be held in Davos, Switzerland, from January 17-20, 2017.

The World Economic Forum brings together the world’s foremost CEOs, heads of state, policy-makers, experts, international organizations, innovators and representatives of civil society with the aim of driving positive change. This year these leaders will focus on “ Responsive and Responsible Leadership ”, a theme which calls on global decision makers to renew the systems that have supported international cooperation in the past by adapting them to today’s complex, multipolar world in ways that foster genuinely inclusive and equitable growth. In this context, ensuring people’s health and wellness will be among the leaders’ top priorities both on the public and the private sector.

Nerio Alessandri will be one of the key leaders involved in the Health and Healthcare initiative , a framework aimed at shaping the future of health and healthcare by promoting healthy behaviours and sustainability in healthcare. In particular, Alessandri will present Wellness as a central driving force in promoting social and economic sustainability. In a world in which non-communicable diseases and unhealthy lifestyles are on the rise, wellness is vital in stopping this negative trend and in enhancing people’s quality of life. Today, wellness must be seen as a social opportunity for everyone - an opportunity for governments to reduce health service costs by implementing public policies that promote health in every aspect of civil society (e.g. human planning initiatives, actions in the field of education, sports, tax incentives, etc); an opportunity for companies to develop corporate wellness programs, leading to benefits both for employees in terms of quality of life and for the companies in terms of creativity and increased productivity; finally, an opportunity for all citizens to improve their health and daily lifestyle thanks to a regular physical activity.

During his session, Nerio Alessandri will discuss the benefits of exercise and prevention , encouraging actions to stimulate and support people in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

2017 will mark that first year that the World Economic Forum hosts a session dedicated to Sport , entitled “ The Transformative Power of Sport ”. Nerio Alessandri, together other representatives of the sports world among which the Ministry of Sports of Japan, the country that will host the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, will discuss how sport can be pivotal in paving the way towards more cohesive and inclusive societies as well as in providing new opportunities for disadvantaged communities.

Nerio Alessandri Turned Olympia Dreams Into Olympic-Level Glory

M any sports fans around the world will be tuning into the Olympics to see the best in the world showcase their skills. American fans anticipate seeing Simone Biles in gymnastics as well as swimmer Katie Ledecky, track and field athlete Noah Lyles, and LeBron James along with the rest of the superstars on the men’s basketball squad.

In total, 15,000 athletes from 120 different countries will compete for sports immortality and Olympic glory in Paris, France. As great as they all may be, none of them can say they will be a part of the Olympics as many times as Technogym has. This will be the ninth time that the global fitness brand will be providing the athletes with the fitness equipment they need over the course of two weeks. Just like the competitors they support, the Olympic Games is the brand’s shining moment, and they take great pride in being the official and exclusive fitness equipment supporter.

Technogym’s involvement may not be very significant to many of the viewers and fans, but founder Nerio Alessandri, is well aware of the importance that comes with their involvement.

“This is our shining moment,” Alessandri says.

It wasn’t Olympic athletes that garnered his attention but rather Olympia contenders and champions. His personal passion for fitness began in the 1980’s when he was reading and collecting issues of Muscle & Fitness magazine while growing up in Italy. Seeing great bodybuilding champions such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Robby Robinson, and Rachel McLish inspired him. He may have gotten his greatest inspiration from the legendary Steve Reeves, who portrayed Hercules in the movies of his day.

He recalled the thrill of going to Gold’s Beach Venice on is first trip to California.

“I met all the big guys back then,” he said.

Alessandri eventually saw his own way of impacting the fitness world – by creating the best equipment he could. It began with a hack squat machine but escalated well beyond that over the next couple of decades. With innovation and commitment, he founded his company and started making moves. In 1996, they created the first software for the fitness industry. By the year 2000, Technogym was in Sydney, Australia for their first Olympic Games appearance.

The growth didn’t stop there, either. They went on to premiere the first cloud-based industry platform in 2012, and their most recent advancement was the launch of Technogym Live app.

This year, Technogym is now a fitness giant. They have over 2,300 employees, many of whom are located at the Technogym village. the wellness campus in Cesena. The rest are spread across the 14 subsidiaries in Europe, the United States, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and South America. Among those people are researchers and developers—including Alessandri himself, who play a major hands-on role with the brand— updating technology for strength training, cardio, and testers for every single piece of equipment that gets shipped out of its adjacent warehouse. The brand isn’t cheap—a single treadmill lists as high as $21,670 and a kinesis machine starts out at $16,850.

Those price tags may be surprising, but the Technogym team has clearly been doing something right and making the investment worth it. Every day, 55 million people train with Technogym in 85.000 Wellness centers and 400.000 private homes in over 100 Countries. You can see why the Olympics don’t intimidate them.

Support and Research While Making a Difference

Ever the forward thinker, the entrepreneur reported that this will be more than a showcase for his brand – it will be a chance to provide 29 training centers with fitness equipment and digital technologies that will double as labs as well as a campaign called “Let’s Move for Paris.” Athletes training in the Technogym Centers in the Olympic Village and in the various competition venues will collect their Moves— the unit of measurement of movement – which will add up into a large digital counter every day.

People around the world will be able to join the initiative and help increase the number of Moves collected through the Technogym App, promoting wellness culture in their community and moving more and more often. In addition to this important cultural legacy, Technogym will leave a lasting physical legacy through the donation of a complete Technogym Outdoor solution to a park in the city of Paris that will be identified together with the city administration. Their work won’t end at the Olympics, either.

“We will also work with Paralympic athletes,” Alessandri said. “We will have special equipment for the Paralympics. The movement is really becoming big and important.”

The Paralympics follow the Games and are set for August 28th through September 8th, and Technogym’s team take that event just as seriously. The need for para-athlete equipment, which started, he says with modifications for wheelchair athletes—its ergometer and lat machine had removable seats for easier access— in the early 2000s has expanded toa thletes of all disabilities, including one his prizes, the Kinesis equipment, which he describes as a functional fitness piece that’s adaptable for everyone.

“Within the release, you’ll see we are highlighting three Paralympic athletes, Beatrice Maria ‘Bebe’ Vio (Italy), Felix Streng (Germany), and Ambra Sabatini (Italy), who serve as Technogym ambassadors.”

While they hope to get many pats on the back, they will also look for feedback that can help them make improvements and create new products that can help future fitness-minded people and athletes alike.

The Work Continues

Now besides the Olympics, his company has gone on to work with Real Madrid, Juventus, Milan, Inter, the Italian and Brazilian national teams, the Ferrari and McLaren teams in Formula 1, the French and US Tennis Federation as well as the renowned PGA Golf Tour. He’s worked with everyone from Beckham to Ronaldo, to Rafa Nadal. Clearly, Technogym has had a cultural impact on sports and fitness that may be second to none.

Oltre a Elisabeth Taylor e a Yul Brinner . Lo yacht è l’Istranka, ormeggiato da tempo alla banchina di Fucile. 46 metri, costruito nel 1959, Istranka significa in serbo ragazza d’Istria. Non a caso perchè lo yacht è appartenuto a Tito. Per tanti un nome che dirà poco, ma per gli ultra cinquantenni enni dire J osip Broz , universalemente noto come Tito , significa aprire un mondo.

Tito era il nome di battaglia durante la guerra partigiana durante il secondo conflitto mondiale. La Jugoslavia era occupata da tedeschi e italiani (ugualmente crudeli quando si trattava di reprimere i patrioti di Tito: i nostri generali si salvarono a malapena da processi per crimini di guerra) ma riuscì a liberarsi da sola, senza l’aiuto dell’Armata Rossa come successe per il resto dell’Europa dell’Est. Una storia che in pochi oggi ricordano.

Per questo ed altri motivi, Tito non diventerà mai un vassallo di Stalin. Per questo era molto amato dagli Occidentali. Tanto per capire la Jat – la compagnia di bandiera – aveva aerei Dc10 e Boeing 737 e non i classici Ilyuscin che l’Unione sovietica vendeva ai paesi del Patto di Varsavia.

E così le attrici di mezzo mondo facevano a gara per essere ospiti di Tito e di Jovanka, la giunonica terza moglie che aveva conosciuto durante gli anni della macchia.

Chi non amava Tito era Trieste e tutti quegli italiani che dovettero fuggire da Istria e Dalmazia con l’arrivo dei partigiani titini. Le tragiche vicende delle foibe sono venute pesantemente alla luce solo quando il centrodestra è andato al governo.

Per certi aspetti Tito si atteggiava da satrapo orientale. Aveva questo bellissimo yacht, possedeva Broni, un’intera isola nell’Adriatico. E non a caso la villa che lo ospitava dopo la sua morte è stata trasformata in un hotel di lusso della catena relaix & chateaux.

Morto nel 1980 (aveva 88 anni ed era già vedovo), la Jugoslavia – come sapevano tutti – non resisterà alla sua scomparsa. Una crisi interna accelerata poi dalla caduta del Muro (1989).

Ma veniamo alla Istranka. Oggi la barca è iscritta al compartimento di La Spezia ed posseduta, come logico in questi casi, ad una società. Dietro la quale si scopre uno dei più brillanti imprenditori italiani. Si tratta di Nerio Alessandri , fondatore e patron di Technogym, leader mondiale nelle attrezzature da palestra (e non solo).

Anche all’interno di Istranka ci sono questi modelli, ma la scelta di questa barca ha altre motivazione. Ossia avere uno yacht che sia un pezzo unico e che in qualche modo abbia fatto la storia. Da qui la scelta su un barca che naturalmente è stata profondamente ristrutturata. A comandarla c’è un viareggino.

A bordo Alessandri ospita personaggi importanti della finanza come Corrado Passera o Filippo Nagel . Tutti nomi che si scoprono su Dagospia, sempre attento agli intrecci fra mondanità e finanza, anzi alta finanza. E così l’Istranka lo trovate in estate a Porto Cervo, Saint Tropez e Capri.

Parlando di yacht storici, in questi giorni Lusben ospita per lavori il TM Blue One, il celebre megayacht da 50 metri costruito più di 30 anni fa da Picchiotti per lo stilista Valentino Garavani. E varato dallo stesso sarto con una madrina d’eccezione: Sophia Loren.
