Basic specs..

The hull is made of plywood. Some boats has a hull made of Fibreglass.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Royal Cape One Design is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.58 - 1.68 meter (5.18 - 5.48 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Royal Cape One Design is 1.76, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Royal Cape One Design is about 121 kg/cm, alternatively 679 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 121 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 679 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

First designed for single-chined plywood construction. Based on the ZEESLANG (‘Sea Snake’ vds #58 - 1956). A fiberglass version was built to the same single-chined hull shape, from molds that were made off a plywood boat. Built, and seen mostly in South Africa. It is what would later be called an ULBD and decades ahead of it’s time. Despite the name, the RCOD was never actually raced as a one-design class. Thanks to Dudley Dix for providing a correction.

. We clubbed the rest of the fleet and won on handicap. We had about 40knt. up the tailpipe surfing at 22 knots in 20' rollers in the Agulhas . On the day my dad bought the , we had a 60kn. South Wester nail the fleet. There were dismastings and other mayhem. We got home fine. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING UNSAVOURY ABOUT THE RCOD. The RCOD is singularly one of the most safe and 30' yachts on the ocean today. Enjoy it if you have one...

(no shed to keep my tools), 80 metres of chain a spare admiralty and she has been previously refitted with an ancient Yanmar 12Hp diesel that weighs around 250Kg.
and depending on wind & tide will sail close to speed at 20Kts. Under full sail at 20kts she lays over to around 35-40 Degrees and If caught out in a 30Kt squall under full sail she just rounds up and stops.

The Royal Corinthian One-Design

Visitors to Burnham on Crouch in Essex will recognise this elegant keel boat.

She’s a contemporary of the Royal Burnham One-Design and for many of the past 71 years has sailed the River Crouch and nearby waters. Designed by HC Smith of the Burnham Yacht Building Company, she was introduced by the Royal Corinthian YC as a replacement class for the East Coast One-Design.

Royal Corinthian YC (RCYC) commodore FG Mitchell provided the initial impetus for getting the class launched. He saw a great potential in the RCODs, and also a way of sustaining boatbuilding in Burnham at a time of economic difficulties. Seventeen RCODs were built for the RCYC between 1935 and 1936, 11 by HC Smith, four by King & Sons – builders of the Royal Burnham One-Design (RBOD) – and two by the barge builder Douglas Stone of nearby Brightlingsea.

The 22-footer is of similar size to the Norman Dallimore-designed RBOD, but has a slightly finer and shallower hull and a counter instead of a transom stern. They are carvel planked of mahogany on oak and three-quarters decked. According to Herbert Larter, a shipwright at the Burnham Yacht Building Co, the RCODs’ hulls were planked upside down on moulds, on the top floor of the shed. They were then lowered to the ground floor with block and tackle before being turned over and fitted out.

The RCODs set a tall, fractional bermudan rig with a total sail area of 226sqft (21m 2 ). Originally a jib that could be roller-reefed was specified, but this was replaced by a hanked-on jib in 1948 when the sail plan was tweaked by Norman Dallimore.

A spinnaker was introduced at the same time and, in 1957, Terylene sails replaced the cotton ones. The only major change since then has been the introduction of metal spars in the 1970s, and the class is keen to keep the boats as original as possible. As with all one-designs, they are governed by strict rules and the only modern electronic allowed is a depth sounder.

The Royal Corinthian YC runs a successful ‘100 Club’, which for an annual subscription of £60 gives its 100 members a chance to win several prizes of between £125 and £500 and raise money towards the restoration of the RCODs at the same time. Last year they raised £6,000 and it is hoped that by the fleet’s 75th anniversary in 2010, they will have raised enough to pay for the restoration of the remaining four boats and have all 16 back on the water.

What’s in a name

All the RCODs’ names start with the letters ‘COR’.

Original cost

In 1935 a new Smith-built RCOD cost £140.

Overseas colour code

Although only 17 RCODs were ever built for the Burnham fleet, it was hoped that the class would prove popular abroad. Several countries were allocated different-coloured sail insignia. The horseshoe of laurels was to be red for the Burnham fleet, black for Kenya’s, blue for France’s and orange for South Africa’s. In the end, only two boats were ever built for a foreign fleet. The Smith-built boats were exported to Lake Victoria in Kenya, and although photographs exist of one of them in the 1950s or 60s, their whereabouts now is unknown.

Annual race

The Caudle Cup is an annual race open to RCODs and RBODs designed to “promote good relations between the neighbouring fleets on the river”.

Final body found in Sicily yacht wreckage is Hannah Lynch, official says

ROME – The final body has been retrieved from the wreckage of a sunken yacht off Sicily, authorities said Friday, bringing to seven the number of people who died in the disaster.

“I can confirm it to you, the last victim inside the hull has been found,” said Cosimo Nicastro, a spokesman for the Italian coast guard.

Nicastro did not confirm the identity of the final body, but a senior Italian government official told the Washington Post that it has been confirmed to be that of Hannah Lynch, the teenage daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity in keeping with protocol. Hannah Lynch, 18, was the last passenger missing since the Bayesian sank in a storm off the northern coast of Sicily on Monday.

Mike Lynch’s body was recovered from the wreckage of the 183-foot yacht on Thursday. The British-flagged vessel was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday, roughly half a mile off the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello. It sank to a depth of more than 160 feet.

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” a spokesperson for the Lynch family said in a statement. “They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares, were rescued shortly after the Bayesian sank. The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered during initial search efforts.

Four bodies were pulled from the wreckage Wednesday. They were identified as those of two couples: Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; Judy Bloomer, a charity trustee; Chris Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance in New York; and Neda Morvillo, a jeweler.

Friends of Hannah Lynch, paid tribute to a “warm and beautiful soul” and called her loss “unbearable.”

“Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy. She is the most special friend anyone could ask for,” said her friend Katya Lewis, in a statement provided by the Lynch family’s representatives.

Hannah was “sincere, dedicated, fiercely intelligent and genuinely kind. I’ll always remember her smiling,” said Gracie Lea, her classmate at Latymer Upper School in London, which she attended.

Her teacher Jon Mitropoulos-Monk said Hannah “combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm.” He said Hannah “devoured” works of English literature, scoring high marks in her national exams, and had been due to attend the University of Oxford to study English, “a goal she had worked so hard towards.”

“I taught Hannah for four years. I will remember her for what she taught me: kindness, compassion and commitment,” he added.

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Bacares, and several of the passengers had business or legal ties to Lynch. Morvillo represented Lynch in a recently concluded legal battle. The voyage was intended to be a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal in the United States of fraud charges, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper has reported.

Lynch, 59, co-founded Autonomy, once Britain’s largest software company, and the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, among other ventures.

He sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion, but was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and charged by the United States with fraud. He was acquitted on all counts by a federal court in San Francisco in June.

Divers from the Italian fire brigade have been working daily since Monday to recover the bodies, but the position of the yacht, and its narrow and cluttered passages, complicated the effort.

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Panama deported 29 Colombians on Tuesday on a flight that the government said was the first paid for by the United States  under an agreement  the two countries signed in July.

The  Colombians had entered Panama  illegally through the Darien jungle, a path used by more than 500,000 migrants headed north last year.

The vast majority of those were Venezuelans.

But at least for now, Panama is not able to deport Venezuelans because the relationship between the countries has turned tense since Panama — like most other countries in the region -– has refused to recognize  the results of Venezuela’s election  giving President Nicolas Maduro another term.

The two countries have suspended their diplomatic relations.

Panama President José Raúl Mulino, who  took office July 1 , pledged to stop that migration flow, an interest he shares with the U.S. government.

Mulino had originally said the flights would be “voluntary” repatriations, but those deported Tuesday had criminal records, officials said.

Roger Mojico, director of Panama’s National Immigration Service, told reporters Tuesday that Panama is speaking with other countries such as Ecuador and India about coordinating repatriation flights.

Superyacht maker's CEO: Bayesian's crew made an 'incredible mistake'

The body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was recovered Thursday from his family's superyacht that sank off the coast of Italy after it encountered a sudden and powerful storm, authorities said.

After four bodies were recovered from the wreck Wednesday, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, remains the only person unaccounted for, Massimo Mariani, of Italy's interior ministry, told Reuters. Her body may have been swept out to sea, Mariani said.

It could take divers more time to find her body because of the difficulties of accessing the sunken ship more than 160 feet down, said Luca Cari, a fire brigade spokesperson. Rescuers faced a challenging task in scouring extremely deep and narrow spaces around the boat.

Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of Italian ship manufacturer Perini, which made the ship in 2008, told Reuters on Thursday, "The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors."

He said the crew made an "incredible mistake" in not preparing for the storm, even though it was announced in a shipping forecast earlier. "This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance," he said.

Lynch, 59, was best known as the co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. He had invited his friends on the yacht to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges related to the sale of Autonomy.

The Bayesian, a 184-feet-long British-registered sailboat, went down just before sunrise Monday off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo, where it was anchored when a strong storm swept across the area. Of the 22 passengers and crew members on board, 15, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, were pulled from the water Monday, and several were hospitalized. Divers then recovered the body of Ricardo Thomas, the yacht's chef, near the ship.

Who were among the missing?

An exhaustive search ensued for six missing people: Lynch and his daughter; Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Jonathan Bloomer was a character witness at Lynch’s fraud trial, and Chris Morvillo, an American citizen, was part of the team that represented Lynch.

Hannah, the younger of Lynch's two daughters, was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times.

Investigation opened into the tragedy

Local prosecutors have opened an investigation into the disaster and will hold a press conference on Saturday.

Costantino said there were no errors in the ship's construction or design. "It went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell," he said.

The ship, owned by Lynch's wife, Bacares, was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council. It was refitted for the second time in 2020.

Experts have pointed to  a waterspout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the weight of the ship's mast, one of the largest in the world, as possible factors in its sinking.

  • Story Text: Moscow is nowhere near the ocean and its rivers are frozen most of the year. Yet Russia's superrich are snapping up yachts from around the world to cruise on the capital's waterways, making the city a yacht capital. At a four-day yacht festival this week on the banks of the Moscow River, more than twenty international boat sellers promoted their latest models. Although Russia has no yachting tradition and a lot of Russians live barely above the poverty line, yacht sellers say the demand for luxurious boats has been booming in the few years as the country recovers from a financial meltdown in the late 90s. Their main customers are Moscow's growing legion of millionaires, always on the look out for new status symbols. "Every person who is buying a house on the water immediately wants a boat and they go for premium quality. They don't even want to try what boat they want, they immediately ask what is the best one. And we are lucky with this because our boats are the most expensive, and the best and the most luxurious," said Svetlana Vasilyeva, General Director of Premium Boat Service (PBS), a Dutch company that imports American motor yachts. In business for just two years, PBS says it sells one to three yachts per week, ranging from 7 to 11 metres long and costing between two and five hundred thousand U.S. dollars per piece. However, sellers are realizing that there is even more money to be made with bigger boats. "Only five years ago the biggest boat in Moscow area was 39 feet, which is 12 metres. At the moment the biggest boat is 30 metres. Price wise the difference is 15 times. So, if you talk about the business, we got in quite occasionally, but now it is our passion," said Georgy Chumburidze, who -- at 25-years-old -- is the owner and director of Ultra Marine, a company that sells big Italian yachts of the brand Azimut. Chumburidze said he sells some 40 to 50 yachts per year. Without a sea nearby, Moscow's yacht owners mainly use their yachts to cruise on the rivers and lakes around the capital. "In principle it is quite comfortable for an hour boat trip, and after that you can always dock at a cozy picturesque restaurant in a harbour and relax. But if you want to have some waves, this size of the boat also allows you to put it on a big trailer and drive it to Krasnodar (area on the Black Sea) or to the coast by Saint Petersburg, without a problem," said Dmitry Bukhotoyarov, a chairman of a bank who bought his powerful Cobalt 343 at the end of last year's yachting season. As thousands of Moscovites watched from the river banks and bridges, proud yacht-owners happily showed off their new toys and cruised towards the Kremlin.

A sea tornado just sank a yacht in the Mediterranean. We might be seeing more of them.

A deadly waterspout is strongly suspected of sinking a yacht off the coast of Italy. Scientists weigh in on whether they’ll worsen as the planet warms.

A superyacht carrying 22 people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy, in the early hours of August 19.  

The 183-foot Bayesian yacht is believed to have been hit by a waterspout —a tornado that forms over the ocean—and some experts are concerned that climate change could worsen these storms in the Mediterranean and other quickly warming waters.

Here’s what you need to know about waterspouts and whether hotter temperatures could cause more of them.

What is a waterspout?

A waterspout is a tornado that forms over water. “The tornado doesn't really care what surface it’s over,” says David Sills, executive director of the Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University in Ontario, Canada. “Whether it's a city or a forest or crops or water, the tornado is going to do its thing."  

These columns of rotating air “form where an air boundary exists, for example where warm and cold air collide,” says a spokesperson at the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) via email.

A waterspout in the Mediterranean Sea, which appears as a vertical column, like a tornado, extending from the rough sea surface into the clouds above.

Changes in wind direction at different heights can cause a rotation.

“Imagine just above the ocean, the wind is blowing in one direction,” says Peter Inness , meteorologist at the University of Reading. When the wind higher up blows in another direction, “the air between those two levels of wind starts rotating around the horizontal axis.”

The warm air below rises and these “spinning parcels of air are also lifted and stretched in this process and can concentrate on the surface of the water creating a vortex,” says the BOM.

As the air is sucked upwards into the storm, the spinning intensifies like taking the plug out of the bath, says Innes: “the water going down the plughole rotates very intensely because it's being sucked downwards.”

It’s similar to a figure skater, adds Sills: “When they bring in their arms, and then they spin faster and faster.”  

How dangerous are waterspouts for boats?

Although the wind associated with waterspouts can reach 55 miles per hour, they typically move at under 25 miles per hour, are short-lived, and don’t cause much damage. “They usually only impact any single point for a few minutes,” says the BOM.

The Bayesian was moored overnight when it sank. Although people have attributed this to a waterspout, it’s not yet been confirmed.  

“It was dark and there are no images available,” says Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society , via email.

Boats are designed to right themselves when blown over by strong winds. “Those sailboats have a big, heavy keel so that when you start to go over, it pulls you back up,” says Sills.

But if water gets into the ship, it can lose buoyancy. “It's called a knockdown,” he says. “Time spent over like that means water and waves can get into open doors and it starts to take on water. Then you start to sink.”

The rapid change in wind strength and direction are also dangerous for boats, says Innes, “because it could result in the boat rocking backward and forward very violently.”

Will climate change cause more waterspouts?

One study has found more frequent waterspouts off the coast of Spain’s Balearic Islands when sea surface temperatures are higher, particularly between 73 and 78°F.

This year, “the Mediterranean is [over 5°F] above average,” says Mercalli, which is “an anomaly considered "extreme". These unusually warm waters could be partly due to climate change as well as year-on-year variability.

Some people are concerned that climate change could cause an increase in tornadoes on land and water.

“Global warming will increase all weather extreme events, because it injects more energy into the atmosphere,” says Mercalli.

But experts are wary of confirming a definite link with climate change. “Waterspouts are a very short-lived and local scale phenomena, and therefore difficult to attribute to impacts of climate change,” says the BOM.

The Mediterranean is warming more quickly than the rest of the ocean. Although climate change will make sea surface temperatures warmer, it’s unclear how it will affect the other conditions needed to create waterspouts.

Waterspouts need a temperature difference between air and sea. If the air is warming at the same rate as the bodies of water, an increase in waterspouts is unlikely, says Sills.  

Low pressure is also needed. “Even if the water is really warm, if you've got an area of high pressure over the Mediterranean, you won't get those thunderstorms,” says Inness. “You won't get waterspouts.”

Wind direction also comes into play. In this region, humid air from the north is more likely to cause storms than dry winds coming up from North Africa.    

Due to poor historic data, it’s not possible to confirm that waterspouts are increasing, says Mercalli, “but surely all heavy storms, including thunderstorms that generate strong winds, downbursts, heavy rains and hail are increasing worldwide and in Italy.”

The  Massachusetts Department of Public Health  (MDPH) states that swimming in the water at these closed beaches poses a threat of illness due to high levels of bacteria. Symptoms can range from nausea and vomiting to a sore throat and fever.

This weekend, 93 Massachusetts beaches are closed - a record high for the season. Here's the full list.

Most beaches are closed due to bacterial exceedance, meaning the levels of bacteria in the water are higher than the limits set by the MDPH.

Those in the "other" category can be closed due to a variety of chemical or physical hazards, such as riptides and poor visibility.

When will beaches in Massachusetts re-open?

According to the  MDPH website , beaches can only re-open when their bacteria levels are back within the safe range, so there is no set amount of time for a closure.

The status of a closed beach can be checked on the website's  water quality dashboard , which is updated at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. daily.

Rcod report 26 jun 2024.

The RCOD’s had a good turnout on Saturday, despite a couple of absences through National Championship commitments and dodgy hips ( speedy recovery Sue !). Racing was hosted by the RB race box for the first time since rebuilding and a challenging up river course was set with a variable westerly setting in. The start provided awkward for Corsair – judging the tide and line amongst a host of moored boats proved a challenge. Three got away and faced a slow beat up to Cliff Reach. Coryphee held a tight lead over Corella ( first time out this season) for a couple of laps until the last mark when the tide drifted Coryphee onto the mark. Corinna tracking closely behind managed to take downwind advantage of the zephyrs from the right to steal a win. Three boats finished within 20 seconds – not bad after two hours racing!

Regretfully the wind didn’t hold for Sunday’s Caudle Cup – our annual match against the RBODs which was postponed to sail another day. Thank you to the RBODs for organising and hopefully we will have more breeze next time. NoR and SIs for our regatta starting on Friday 12 July will be on the website shortly. Please remember to enter!

    GU Laws' 30-footer had proved a great success, but times were hard and yachtsmen could no longer afford to invest large sums in racing yachts. The Royal Corinthian One-Design (RCOD), as the open cockpit daysailer became known, was a smaller and ultimately cheaper alternative, but one that still provided good sport.
