MARINER CLASS STYLES/ HULL IDENTIFICATION YEAR BUILT INFORMATION

The following information will help you determine the Hull Number (Mariner Class/Sail Number), the month and year your Mariner was built and when the different topsides styles were built.

From 1963 when the first O'Day Mariner was built until November 1972 the boats had a metal plate attached to either the rear of the cockpit or on the centerboard trunk. The first, larger number is the total number of boats built by the O'Day Corporation, including all classes of boats. The Class No. on the plate is the actual Mariner Class/Sail number for the O'Day Mariner.

oday sailboat hull numbers

The following Sail Numbers were built in approximately the following years: Year Built   Sail Number (Class Number) 1963 1-92 1964 93-256 1965 257-437 1966 438-818 1967 819-1147 1968 1148-1414 1969 1415-1725 1970 1726-2053 1971 2054-2371 1972 2372-2560      All boats manufactured or imported on or after November 1, 1972 must bear a Hull Identification Number (HIN). The HIN is a 12 character serial number that uniquely identifies your boat. The HIN has an important safety purpose. It enables manufacturers to clearly identify for boat owners the boats that are involved in a defect notification and recall campaign.      A HIN is not the same as a State registration number, which may be required to be displayed on the bow of your boat. The HIN is a Federal requirement; your boat's registration number is a State requirement similar to the license plate on your car. The HIN, however, is required to be shown on the State title or certificate of registration.

The following two formats for the HIN were used until August 1, 1984.

Location of serial number (HIN) on a 1978 O'Day boat. Key to Month of Model Year AUG  A    FEB  G SEP  B    MAR  H OCT  C    APR  I NOV  D    MAY  J DEC  E    JUN  K JAN  F    JUL  L Example #1: XDYF26040373      In this example XDY is the designation given to the O'Day company and F means it's a Mariner. 2604 is the sail number, the 0373 means the boat was built in March 1973. Here is an actual molded in serial from a 1978 boat. Code XDY (O'Day), F (Mariner), 3627 (Sail Number),  M (Spacer), 78 (Year) D (Nov. built) Example #2: XDYF2547M72E      In this example XDY is the designation given to the O'Day company and F means it's a Mariner. 2547 is the sail number, the M was used as a spacer and the 72E shows that the boat was built in December 1972. Starting August 1, 1984 the letter designation for the month built next to the year built starts with A=Jan, B=Feb. etc.      Boats manufactured or imported on or after August 1, 1984, also have a duplicate secondary HIN affixed somewhere on an unexposed location inside the boat or beneath a fitting or item of hardware. The purpose is to help authorities identify your boat if a thief or vandals remove or damage the primary HIN on the transom. It is illegal for anyone (manufacturer, dealer, distributor, or owner) to alter or remove a HIN without the express written authorization of the Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard.

Hull Identification Numbers

Confusion over model years, especially on outboard engines, can frustrate buyers. Here's how to find that info on the products themselves.

Hull indentification number

General Motors introduced planned obsolescence in the 1920s as a way of discerning one model year from another, in order to convince the public that buying the latest model car was fashionable, if not exactly necessary. The tradition set by GM survives today. Eventually, consumers began to rely on the model-year change, which usually happened in the fall, to assure that they were getting the latest and greatest. Car buyers still eagerly anticipate the newest technology, and dealers often offer deep discounts to move out last year's models.

Manufacturers of other big-ticket items, such as boats and outboards, followed suit, hoping to convince buyers that the newer the boat, the better the boat. For years, U.S. Coast Guard regulations required boat manufacturers to use August 1 of the previous year as the cutoff date for the next model year. For example, a boat built in September 2011 could be called a 2012 model, but if it was built in July, it had to be sold as a 2011.

When buying a used boat, take a rubbing of the boat's HIN using a pencil and paper to ensure it matches the seller's documents.

In 2012, boatbuilders petitioned the Coast Guard to change the date to June 1, allowing for an extra two months of production to still be labeled as next year's model. Manufacturers argued that because of marine production schedules, which, unlike automaker schedules, tend to fall at erratic times throughout the year, they needed to have more flexibility in designating the time span of their new model year.

The Coast Guard agreed to make the change, permitting a couple of months of last year's boats to be called this year's.

Fortunately, it's fairly simple to find your boat's build date. (See "HINs By The Numbers" below) The information with the boat's model year is contained in the hull identification number (HIN), which is a label permanently affixed to the boat. The number includes a date assigned by the builder. This date is technically not the date of manufacture; rather, it's the date on which the boat was certified by the builder to meet Coast Guard regulations.

HINs By The Numbers

A typical hull identification number (HIN) consists of 12 letters and numbers, as in ABC12345D404 .

Here's what the letters and numbers mean:

ABC: This is the U.S. Coast Guard-assigned manufacturer identification code (MIC). Go to the USCG Manufacturers Indentification page to access the Coast Guard's MIC database.

12345: This is the serial number assigned to the hull by the manufacturer. This may be a combination of letters and numbers. The letters "I," "O," and "Q" are excluded because they could be mistaken for numbers.

D: This is the month of certification, indicating the month in which construction began. "A" represents January and "L" represents December. In our example, "D" means April.

4: This is the year of certification. The number is the last digit of the year in which the boat was built. "4" in this case designates 2004.

04: This indicates the boat's model year.

Some boats, especially large ones, may be on the floor for months before completion (even straddling the June cutoff date), while others may be finished in a matter of days. To be consistent, the Coast Guard uses the date the manufacturer says the boat meets federal regs. Once the HIN is assigned and affixed, that date becomes the boat's model year, regardless of when it was actually finished.

Once a HIN has been put on the boat, it can't be changed without permission from the commandant of the Coast Guard, which rarely happens. New boat buyers should look at the HIN and verify that the boat in which they're interested actually belongs to the model year that the dealer claims for it. Used-boat buyers should also decipher the HIN and make sure it matches what the seller and paperwork state.

What About My Engine?

Outboard motor

The Coast Guard has no model-year regulations for outboard engines, making it harder for consumers to determine the year in which they were built. In 2007, Yamaha stopped designating model years for its outboard engines entirely. Though the reasoning is sound, it creates a challenge for consumers.

Unlike cars, in which engines are built into the product, a selection of engines usually can be fitted on outboard boats. Dealers have struggled for years to make sure that the engines bought from an engine manufacturer during one year get sold that same year on new boats.

If a boat on the showroom floor comes with a 200-hp engine but a buyer wants a 250-hp engine, the dealer may have to order the bigger engine and keep the smaller one in stock. If it takes a couple of years to finally sell that 200-hp engine, a buyer may be reluctant to buy it if the model year isn't current, and the dealer may have to subsequently discount it. Buyers typically want a 2017 engine, for example, on their 2017 boat.

Eliminating the model year solves the problem for the manufacturer and dealer but can be confusing for buyers. Other outboard manufacturers, including Mercury and Honda, adopted Yamaha's practice, and most outboard engines today don't have model-year designations. Outboard manufacturers say that until they make a significant change to an engine, the year it was built is irrelevant. While that's true, buyers are concerned that if there's no model-year designation, they don't know if they're getting the newest technology.

Fortunately, there's still a way to determine when an outboard was built. After discontinuing model years, engine manufacturers replaced the model-year designator on the engine's serial number with a code that signifies an "era" in which all engines are supposed to be the same, with similar upgrades. Consumers, however, are concerned that with computer controls, mechanically identical engines could have electronic updates applied to a batch of similar models, and earlier ones might not benefit.

What's considered an upgrade? In the end, the engine manufacturer gets to decide what it is and when there's enough of one to create a new model. Fortunately, dealers usually know which engines in their stock have the most current changes, and you should ask before buying.

What About Warranties?

Manufacturers say that the warranty begins when the engine is sold, regardless of its build date. BoatUS members have asked BoatUS Consumer Protection about engines that may have been sitting around for two or three years. What if they've been damaged over time? By unknowingly buying an engine that may be one, two, or even three years older than their new boat, will they be hit with higher depreciation when it comes time to sell their boat?

Fortunately, the manufacturer's warranty will cover even older engines of the same model, but buyers should verify how many hours are on an engine before buying it. Manufacturers say that depreciation should not be an issue on two identical engines of the same model, regardless of age, but most buyers want the newest one available, and an older engine, even if it's indistinguishable from a newer one, is typically worth less to a first or second buyer.

The good news for consumers is that while outboard engines may not have model years, it's possible to find out when the engine was made. In recent years, a permanent sticker typically can be found on the transom bracket, usually near the serial-number sticker, that gives the month and year of engine manufacture. As a buyer, you can negotiate for the newest engine — or for a discounted older one — if you know what to look for.

Hull ID Numbers: A Comprehensive Guide

Chris Riley

Did you ever wonder what that strange series of letters and numbers on the transom of your boat are. Well, if you have taken the Nautical Know How course you know they are Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) and that they are required. But, what does a Hull Identification Number mean?

What Is A HIN?

oday sailboat hull numbers

All boats manufactured or imported on or after November 1, 1972 must bear a HIN boat hull number. The HIN is a 12 character serial number that uniquely identifies your boat. Think of these boat identification numbers like your car’s VIN.

History of the HIN

The United States Coast Guard was tasked with creating a system that would allow for easier tracking the history of boats and accidents back in 1972. They did not become a fully required feature until 1984, which we’ll touch on below.

Prior to 1972 manufacturers used their own serial numbers but there was no universal format. As you can imagine, this made it more difficult to keep things organized and to cross reference any issues that may have related to recalls or manufacturing defects.

The new system, just as the VIN system in cars, allowed authorities to more easily track boats for safety purposes, to help reduce or track thefts , and to allow all vessels to be more user friendly for everyone involved by eliminating a potential wide range of formats or even number duplication that may have existed between manufacturers.

What Are Hull Identification Numbers Useful For?

oday sailboat hull numbers

The HIN has several important uses for boat owners.

  • It enables manufacturers to clearly identify for boat owners the boats that are involved in a defect notification and recall campaign.
  • The HIN number can allow authorities to track your boat in the event of theft or vandalism.
  • When buying a boat, the HIN allows you to learn more about the boat history including its age and where it came from.
  • The HIN is necessary to ensure your boat can be properly registered and insured. You will likely be required to provide this number if you’re looking for boat financing as well.

A HIN hull number is not the same as a State registration number, which may be required to be displayed on the bow of your boat. The HIN is a Federal requirement; your boat’s registration number is a State requirement similar to the license plate on your car. The HIN, however, is required to be shown on the State certificate of registration.

Where to Find the HIN on a Boat

oday sailboat hull numbers

A HIN number should be clearly visible on a boat while it’s in the water. The ideal position is the upper starboard quarter on the outside of the transom within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. However, if there is no transom on the vessel then it can be on the uppermost starboard side of the hull near the aft of the vessel. This will be the most easily visible location for your HIN but it’s not the only place it needs to be.

If you have a pontoon or catamaran which have replaceable parts, then the HIN needs to be to the aft crossbeam within one foot of the starboard hull attachment.

If the HIN will not be visible because the boat has railings, fittings or any attachments then it needs to be placed as close to the upper right of the aft hull/transom as possible while allowing it to be visible.

The HIN needs to be permanently a part of the hull in this position in such a way that it would be obvious if it was removed. The digits of the HIN should be at least ¼ inch tall.

A secondary HIN should be located on the interior of the boat. This one is more subtle. It can be under a piece of hardware or a fitting, or some other unexposed spot on the interior. This allows for a cross reference/match between the hull HIN and the interior if it’s ever required by the Coast Guard or even by you as a buyer of a new vessel to make sure everything is on the up and up.  The purpose is to help authorities identify your boat with a HIN decoder if a thief or vandals remove or damage the primary HIN boat serial number on the transom. It is illegal for anyone (manufacturer, dealer, distributor, or owner) to alter or remove a HIN without the express written authorization of the Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard.

Beyond the physical numbers on a boat, the HIN should also be recorded in insurance documents, the title and the boat registration.

Understanding A Boat Serial Number:

oday sailboat hull numbers

*Key to Month of Model Year

Figure 1 – HIN Formats Before August 1, 1984

oday sailboat hull numbers

Figure 2 – HIN Format After August 1, 1984

Boats manufactured or imported on or after August 1, 1984, have that duplicate secondary HIN affixed somewhere on an unexposed location inside the boat or beneath a fitting or item of hardware.

What Do the Numbers Mean in a HIN?

The regulations prescribe the format of the HIN.

  • The first three characters are an MIC (Manufacturer Identification Code ) assigned by the Coast Guard to the manufacturer or the person importing the boat
  • Characters four through eight are a serial number assigned by the manufacturer
  • The last four characters indicate the month and year the boat was built, and the model year. Prior to August 1, 1984, the manufacturer had the option of expressing this in the form of a model year designation.

The Coast Guard maintains a searchable database of MICs if you want to perform a boat hull ID lookup.

Do Boats From Outside the US Require a HIN?

For boats manufactured outside of the US, a U.S. importer must obtain a manufacturer identification code. The request must indicate the importer’s name and U.S. address along with a list of the manufacturers, their addresses and the general types and sizes of boats that will be imported. If a nation has a hull identification number system which has been accepted by the Coast Guard for the purpose of importing boats, it may be used by the importer instead of producing a new one.

Do Homemade Boats Need a HIN?

Individuals building boats for their own use and not for the purposes of sale are what are referred to as “backyard boat builders.” They must obtain a 12 character Hull ID Number from their State boating agency. The Manufacturer Identification Code at the beginning of the HIN for a “home built” boat is an abbreviation for the State followed by a “Z” which indicates that it is a State identification.

The method of registering a boat, either homemade or others, can be found in our guide to registration numbers .

The Bottom Line

Every vessel manufactured since 1984 has been required by the US Coast Guard to have a unique 12-digit HIN which works much the same as your car’s VIN. This number is an easy way for the Coast Guard, manufacturers and boat owners to identify a vessel. The number indicates who manufactured the boat with the first three numbers, the hull serial number with the next five, and finally the date of certification and model year for the vessel.

A HIN must be displayed on the starboard, aft section of the boat on the transom or in a clearly visible area within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. The numbers must be at least ¼ inch tall and it must be permanently affixed to the hull. A duplicate number is required on the interior for all boats manufactured since 1984 as well.

Hull Identification Number Location: Primary & Secondary (w/ Pictures)

The HIN is a unique 12-character code assigned to every boat, allowing authorities to track its history and ownership. Not only is it essential for registering your boat, but it also ensures that your boat is legal to operate on the water. Knowing the location of both the primary and secondary HIN locations can be important for verifying the authenticity of a boat's HIN and for obtaining accurate information about the boat's manufacturer, model, and year of production.

The primary HIN location is typically found on the starboard outer side of your boat's transom, above the waterline. The secondary HIN location can vary between boats. It's important to know both HIN locations, as they can come in handy during inspections, maintenance, or when dealing with authorities.

The HIN serves as your boat's unique identifier, so ensure that it's easily accessible and well-maintained. Below, you'll find insider tips to help you maintain your boat's HIN.

  • This primary location is specified by law and must be used by boat manufacturers when affixing the HIN to a new boat.
  • If you know both the primary and secondary locations, it ensures that your boat is legally compliant and accessible in case of emergencies or theft.
  • To prevent potential legal complications related to the proper display and maintenance of your boat's HIN, abide by the regulations that govern its placement.

Primary hull identification number location, secondary hull identification number location, hin location regulations, common issues in identifying numbers.

A Hull Identification Number (HIN) consists of 12 alphanumeric characters, providing essential information about your boat's manufacturer, the serial number, manufacturing month, and model year. Being familiar with how to read and decode a HIN will prove helpful in identifying and maintaining your boat's records. Locating the primary HIN on your boat is essential for proper registration and ensuring its legality on the water.

The primary HIN location is required by law to be permanently affixed to the starboard side of the transom within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint (whichever is lowest). The upper starboard side of the transom is the most common location for the primary HIN, and it's easily visible when the boat is out of the water. However, the exact location of the HIN within the two-inch range specified by law may vary depending on the boat manufacturer and the design of the boat.

To begin your search for the primary HIN, make your way to the starboard (right) side of the boat's transom. This is the flat surface that forms the stern, where the boat's name and registration numbers are often displayed. The HIN should be found on the uppermost part of the transom . Typically, it is placed within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.

If you have an outboard-powered boat , the HIN is likely located on the starboard side of the hull, just beneath the gunwale. This positioning ensures that the HIN remains visible and easily accessible even when the engine is tilted up.

For inboard-powered boats , check around the engine compartment and adjacent areas on the starboard side. The HIN may be stamped into the fiberglass or imprinted on a metal plate fastened to the hull.

The primary HIN location is standardized for easy identification, and it should always be engraved or marked in a permanent and tamper-resistant manner. If you're having trouble locating the HIN on your boat, consult your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer for guidance.

oday sailboat hull numbers

When searching for the secondary Hull Identification Number (HIN) on your boat, it's important to know where to look. The secondary HIN is typically placed in an unexposed location to aid in identifying a boat that may have had its primary HIN altered, removed, or obscured.

The secondary HIN location can be placed in a variety of locations on the boat's interior , including inside the engine compartment, on the motor mount bracket, on the hull or deck under a fitting or piece of hardware, or even under the battery tray. This is because the secondary HIN location is intended to serve as a backup for verification and security purposes in case the primary HIN location is damaged or becomes unreadable.

First, check the interior of your boat . The secondary HIN could be located on the inside of a bulkhead, on the back of a seat or berth, or even under a seat cushion. Inspect these areas closely and be prepared to move around any furniture or cushions to find the number.

Another possibility is to look near the bilge area . This location may require some exploration, as it can be beneath or behind other components of the boat. Make sure to use a flashlight to examine any hidden corners.

Finally, don't forget to check the engine compartment . The secondary HIN might be placed on an interior panel in this area, so you'll need to gain access to the compartment and thoroughly inspect it.

The secondary HIN serves as a backup identification method for your boat, so it might not be as easily visible as the primary HIN. Take your time and search carefully, making sure to check every possible hiding spot. By locating your secondary HIN, you can ensure that your boat is properly identified and that you have access to its complete history and ownership information.

It's important to note that the secondary HIN location is not required by law, but it's a good practice for boat manufacturers to include a secondary location to ensure that the HIN can be easily verified in case of damage or wear to the primary location.

How do you read a HIN? Here's our article on boat HIN decoder .

Tools required to identify the primary and secondary HIN

Before starting, make sure you have the following tools at hand:

  • Cleaning cloth
  • Notepad and pen for taking notes

Step-by-step instructions to identify HIN locations

Locate the primary HIN : The primary Hull Identification Number (HIN) is typically found on the boat's upper-right corner of its transom, which is the flat rear end of the vessel. If your boat has an outboard motor, look for the HIN near the top of the transom, right below the rub rail.

Clean the area : Use your cleaning cloth to wipe off any dirt, grime, or marine growth that may be obstructing the HIN. If necessary, use a flashlight to improve visibility.

Record the primary HIN : Once you've located the primary HIN, write it down on your notepad. A HIN is a 12-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies your boat. It typically follows a format like "ABC12345D203".

Search for the secondary HIN : The secondary HIN is often located in a hidden or less visible spot on your boat. This can be under a hatch, near the fuel tank, or in the engine compartment. Be prepared to search thoroughly around your boat, using your flashlight if needed.

Record the secondary HIN : Once you have found the secondary HIN, write it down on your notepad, next to the primary one. The secondary HIN should match the primary HIN.

oday sailboat hull numbers

If your boat doesn't have a HIN , here are 3 steps on how to get one.

When it comes to locating the Hull Identification Number (HIN) on your boat, it's essential to know the regulations that govern its placement. This way, you can be sure to find the HIN easily and comply with the law.

The HIN is a unique 12-character code assigned to every boat during production. It provides valuable information about the boat's history and manufacturer. Typically, you'll find the HIN on the upper-right side of the transom or the rear part of the boat, also known as the starboard side. However, the HIN location isn't restricted to just one place on the boat.

According to the federal regulations, there are rules regarding both primary and secondary HIN locations. For boats built in or after 1984, the primary HIN must be affixed on the outboard side of the starboard transom, within two inches of the top and aftmost sections. This ensures that it's visible even when the boat is in motion.

As for secondary HIN locations, the regulations require the HIN to be placed on an unexposed part of the boat's interior. The idea behind this secondary location is to make it harder for someone to tamper with or remove the HIN. It serves as a backup in case the primary HIN is damaged or destroyed. Some possible locations for the secondary HIN include the interior of a storage compartment, the underside of a hatch, or inside a cabinet.

Keep in mind that the specific location of the secondary HIN may vary depending on the make and model of your boat. It's essential to familiarize yourself with your boat's layout and consult the owner's manual if necessary.

oday sailboat hull numbers

Sometimes, it can be challenging to locate and correctly identify your boat's Hull Identification Number (HIN). Here are a few common issues and tips for troubleshooting them.

The number is worn or faded : If your HIN is worn or faded, it can be difficult to read. To resolve this issue, try using a flashlight at different angles to create shadows, which may make the numbers more visible. If that doesn't work, you may need to contact the manufacturer or consult the Boat History Report for more information.

Finding the primary and secondary HIN locations : The primary HIN is typically found on the starboard (right) side of the boat's transom, while the secondary HIN location can vary by manufacturer. If you're unsure where to look for the secondary HIN, consult your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer.

Incorrect or illegible characters : Occasionally, HINs can be incorrectly engraved with similar-looking or illegible characters, such as an 'O' instead of a '0'. If you come across this issue, cross-reference the HIN with your boat registration and any available documentation to confirm the correct characters.

Potential signs of tampering : If the HIN appears irregular, tampered with, or altered, you should exercise caution and investigate further. Signs of tampering could include rough edges or evidence of paint removal around the HIN. If you suspect tampering, contact the proper authorities to report this potential issue.

Here are some tips to help you maintain your boat's HIN:

Keep the HIN visible : The primary HIN location should be clearly visible and readable at all times. Make sure that the HIN is not covered by any accessories, such as a swim platform or ladder, and that it's not obstructed by dirt, grime, or other debris.

Protect the HIN from damage : The HIN should be protected from damage caused by impact, abrasion, or exposure to the elements. You can use a protective cover or sealant to help prevent damage to the HIN.

Check the HIN regularly : Regularly check the HIN to ensure that it's still readable and that there are no signs of damage or wear. If you notice any issues with the HIN, such as fading or damage, you should take steps to repair or replace it as soon as possible.

Keep accurate records : Keep accurate records of your boat's HIN, including the primary and secondary locations, as well as any changes or updates to the HIN. This information can be useful for verifying the authenticity of the HIN and obtaining accurate information about the boat's history.

Importance of hull identification numbers

One of the key reasons for obtaining a HIN is the legal requirement . Boats must have a HIN for registration and operation on the water. Without this number, you could face fines or penalties for operating an unregistered vessel. In addition, if your boat is stolen, a HIN makes it easier for authorities to track and identify the boat, increasing the chances of recovery.

Another essential aspect of HIN is that it contains crucial information about your boat . The HIN helps you learn about the boat's manufacturing origin, its age, and other details. Such information can be valuable if you're purchasing a used boat, enabling you to verify the boat's history and make informed decisions.

Lastly, by having a HIN, you'll be able to better protect your investment . Since the HIN allows you to track your boat's history and ownership, it helps maintain a record of the boat's value and any potential issues. Ensuring that your HIN is up-to-date and accurate ensures that you have access to essential information about your boat, such as when warranty claims or insurance matters arise.

In addition to the above formats, you may encounter those which are preceded by country codes such as "US" for the United states, "CN" for Canada, and "FR" for France. This means that the vessel was built for consumption in that respective country. You may also find hull numbers on two separate lines. In this case the second line is not typically considered as part of the hull number. State assigned hull numbers are not always consistent with federal standards.

How Do You Read a Hull ID Number (HIN)?

This is how to read a hull identification number – hin decoding steps.

Reading a boat HIN means decoding the HIN into its component parts. It is important to know the basics but rest assured that there are tools that do it for you. Knowing how to read your vessel’s HIN will allow you to find out the make and year.

We have already discussed what is a HIN and mentioned all you need to know about HINs in our previous article. Today, we discuss how to read it and explain how to know the builder and year of the boat from the HIN.

What do the numbers on a boat mean? What are the types of IDs on marked on a hull

When looking at a vessel, you will probably see different markings. You could see the name and hailing port or you might see the state registration number. These would be on the bow and could have the state’s watercraft decal. If the boat is not titled in the state, then it could be documented with the coast guard. In those cases, the bow will have the name and hailing port. The stern will also have the name and hailing port indicated.

Boat Name on the bowmeans it is documented (not state titled)

There are other numbers on the boat that you will see. Namely, the stern will have the hull ID number plate etched into it. If it is a USCG documented vessel, then you will see the placard having the official number on it in the interior of the vessel.

Example USCG number and HIN Number.

How do I find out my HIN number?

You can find your HIN Number as shown in the image above. It is on the starboard side of the stern.

How many numbers are on a boat VIN? how long is a HIN?

The Boat Hull Identification number is 12 characters long. we say characters instead of digits because it is a mix of numbers and letters. It could have “US-” in the beginning for the country code making it 15 character long but usually the country designation is not written so you just have 12 standard characters for the length.

How do I read my boat’s HIN number? How do you decode a boat HIN number?

Now that you have found your hull ID number for your vessel, it is time to start reading it or decoding it. As stated earlier, there are tools that do this for you such as the official hindecoder.com website. The HIN decoder is free. #HinDecoder

To start reading your boat’s HIN, you can break it up into the 3 main parts:

  • First three characters are the boat manufacturer
  • The next five characters are the serial number
  • Last 4 characters are the Month and Year of manufacture.

How to read a boat HIN Number

How do I find the manufacturer of my boat when reading the HIN?

The first 3 characters in the Hull Identification number are the manufacturer code. So when you are reading the HIN, you might see “YAM” and this would be Yamaha. It might seem difficult to understand the manufacturer identification code (MIC) but you can simply look it up here:

#BoatManufacturer #Florida #BoatBuilder #Boats #Brands

#BoatManufacturer

Example: YAM” would be Yamaha. The list is based on uscg manufacturers for vessels/yachts.

How do you tell the year of a boat by hull number? How do I find out what year my boat was made?

When you are reading your HIN , you can find out the year and month that your boat was built and its model year as well. The manufacturing month and year are not always the same as the boat model year. The year you were born is important. wouldn’t you want to know when your boat was born?

Start by looking at the last 4 characters of the boat’s HIN. Here is where it can get complicated. There are 3 different formats for HIN numbers from 1972 and 1984. You might see a letter “M” in position 9 if the boat HIN Type format is from 1972. If all 4 characters at the end of the HIN are numbers, then it would be the other format from 1972. Here is a handy table to lookup the month codes .

Below is a video explaining the three kinds of HIN formats.

In short, here are the three hull number formats:

  • Letter M then two numbers, then a letter: Model-Year format from 1972
  • Four numbers only and no letters: Straight-Year format from 1972
  • One Letter followed by three numbers: Current format from 1984

These formats came from the ISO 10087 . This standard is described in detail here and on the hindecoder website .

Example, YAM12345D202 and this would be Yamaha Jet Ski HIN Number. The details of the year and make would be in the HIN decoder . The HIN hin location would be on the transom.

#HINFormats #HINTypes #HullIdentificationNumbers

How do I know what model boat I have? What kind of boat do I have? How do I find out what model my boat is?

The HIN formats described above do not contain the model of the boat. It cannot be decoded from the HIN. You can still lookup the boat model name by searching its HIN on hindecoder.com .

Infographic: How to Read a boat HIN

Is the hull ID the same as the serial number? Where is boat serial number located?

The boat hull identification number is also called hull serial number by some people. Having said that, the serial number is actually embedded into the HIN and is 5 characters long after the MIC code as shown in the image above.

Boat Engine Hull Number or serial?

If you have a 200hp or 250hp outboard engine, it does not matter because either way the engine should have its own serial number that is different from the 12 character HIN format. The boat engine serial can be used for many applications for boat buyers and boat owners including warranty lookups when working with manufactures to fix something. Again, the Engine serial (created by engine makers) is different from the boat serial number (created by pleasure craft builders during production).

What do HIN numbers mean? What do hull numbers mean?

If you are in the USA, Canada, or Australia, they should all be following the HULL ID Number standard that came into effect August 1st 1984 and is subject to  ISO 10087:2006(en) . There is no certification for this standard but it must be follows by all boat manufacturers. Even if the vessel is a catamaran or jet ski , it needs a valid HIN and must follow coast guard regulations. Consumers should be aware the steps above how to read a HIN number and tell it apart from boat registration and title numbers. This is a safety purpose from bad sellers and is something surveyors may not check on a used boat!

The articles we have are enough to learn all about HIN numbers so you don’t need any course on the subject but make sure to lookup damage reports and accidents in our Boat-Alert databases. Boat dealers are responsible to title the boat when selling it to you and to do it with the correct HIN and decal stickets.

In conclusion , we have explained how the HIN on a boat is placed on the stern by the manufacturer. We also gave a step by step on how to read your HIN manually and indicated that you can get it decoded automatically at hindecoder.com. You now know how to decipher a pontoon HIN / hull identification number.

Boat Damage Before

A boat's history is an essential factor in determining a boat's estimated market value. In addition to age and hours, other things to check for include whether the boat has ever been in an accident, deemed a total loss, and whether it was used in fresh versus salt water. All of these elements will factor into what the boat is worth and how much you should be willing to pay.

Damage to the boat, especially fiberglass boats, can be repaired very easily with almost no trace of its previous damage. Don't get caught off guard by boats with a history of damage and accidents- this could lead to many future problems and thousands in repair costs.

- Hurricane Damage

Hurricane Sandy resulted in over $650 million in damages to recreational boats.

Hurricane damaged boats are often sold with a clean title.

Most states do not recognize salvage and damaged titles for boats. Therefore, storm damaged boats are auctioned off to be restored and re-sold to unknowing individuals, with clean titles. These boats may have spent significant time submerged under salt water resulting in detrimental damage that could result in loss later on. Boat History Report® is the only way to know the real truth about the boat, as once repaired- these boats can look better than new to an unsuspecting buyer.

- Run Aground

Boats frequently run aground due to a miscalculation of the water's depth.

Running aground can be one of the most costly problems a boat can endure.

Not only can running aground cause hidden structural damage to the boat, if environmental damage was caused, the new owner could be responsible for the previous owners negligence, as these fines stay with the boat and not the reckless boater. Don't put yourself at risk - Boat History Report® can help you avoid purchasing a boat that has run aground.

- Total Loss

Boats are deemed a total loss when the cost to repair is greater than a set percentage of the boat’s value.

Unlike cars, boats have no uniform salvage titling law.

These boats are usually repaired and resold with clean titles, without disclosing previous total loss events. Boat History Report® helps uncover events like these in a boat’s history.

- Had a Recall

Many boats manufactured often contain dangerous, potentially fatal flaws. Is your boat safe?

Open (unfixed) safety recalls can result in serious injury and sometimes death.

Due to safety concerns, manufacturers report recalls every month; however, numerous flawed boats remain in the marketplace. Check our national database to see if your boat has been issued a safety recall as part of your report from Boat History Report®.

- Submersion & Sinking

Sinkings and flooding occur more frequently than you may realize.

Boats that have been submerged sustain damage that can take months to surface.

Not only are boats swamped or capsized while in use, but many sink dockside as a result of heavy rains, storm surge, faulty drains or poor sealing thru-hull fittings. The damage is not noticeable immediately, but as corrosion sets in, costly issues will continue to surface. Let Boat History Report® help save you from a boat that could jeopardize your families safety while costing you thousands of dollars to repair.

- U.S. Customs and IRS Seizure

Boats are constantly seized by U.S. Customs due to illegal activities.

Boat dealers and yacht brokers are not required to report seizure information to customers.

Many times these boats incur serious damage during the seizing activity. Don't unknowingly buy one of these damaged boats - Run a report from Boat History Report® before you buy.

- Boat Fires

In addition to cosmetic damage, boat fires can also cause hidden structural damage.

Due to skilled fiberglass work, boats involved in fires may appear undamaged to the naked eye.

Once the cosmetic issues are fixed you may never know a fire had occurred. That’s what Boat History Report® is for!

- Collisions

Avoid buying a boat that has been in a collision and then cosmetically repaired.

Similar to cars, boats can sustain structural damage that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Collisions cause structural damage that can jeopardize safety and will lower the resale value of the boat. Don’t lose thousands by purchasing a damaged boat- run a Boat History Report® and be informed.
