How much should I tip the boat captain/crew?

The crew will work hard to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time on board. If you have enjoyed your charter we would suggest a 10% is customary.

How do I confirm a yacht charter?

To confirm a charter we will send you a charter agreement for signature and invoice for a deposit. The owner will counter-sign the charter agreement and then your charter will be confirmed

What else will I need to pay for?

In addition to the charter fee you will pay an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) from which the cost for all food and drink for the duration of the charter, fuel, marina and any other additional expenses will be deducted.

What happens once I have booked?

Once you have booked a cruising charter we will be in touch to gather your charter preferences including dietary preferences, meal times and itinerary. We will liaise with the chef to arrange a proposed menu for the charter and put you in touch with the crew via Whatsapp chat.

What are high and low season dates for Caribbean cruising charters

High Season includes the Christmas and New Year period (approx 28th December – 7th January) and 2 weeks around Easter

Can I charter a yacht for a corporate event?

Yes, we offer corporate yacht charters that are perfect for team-building exercises and other corporate functions.

What insurance will I need?

The yacht is fully insured but you will need your own personal insurance that covers yacht racing

Do I need an owners rep/boat captain and what role will they have?

Most of our yachts have to come with a boat captain / owner’s representative; this person isn’t there to be the skipper and they can fit into your team wherever you need. There knowledge of the boat can help you get the best performance from the boat and minimise avoidable damage.

Eating out as a crew?

If you decide to venture out as a group and wish to include the permanent crew, please remember that what is your holiday is their job. If you would like to show your appreciation for all their hard work in making your holiday a success by asking them to join you for a night out, then please be kind enough to pay for their expenses.

What is racing yacht charter?

Racing yacht charter is a unique opportunity that allows you to charter a race prepared yacht with your team and participate in regattas around the world. We can cater for race charter opportunites from a group of friends wanting a fun regatta in the sun to a professional team looking for silverwear.

Do I need sailing experience to participate in a racing yacht charter?

Sailing experience requirements varies according to yacht and regatta of choice. Some yachts like a Volvo 65 require more sailing experience than joining the team on a 40′ racer cruiser. When arranging your charter with you we discuss any pre-requisite experience with you.

What is the duration of a racing yacht charter?

For most racing charters your schedule will include 2 training days prior to the event start date, for offshore races a third day for boat preparation will also be included.

What additional costs should I expect?

In addition to the charter fee you may pay a security deposit and an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) to cover charter related costs including race entry, berthing and other charter related costs.

Can you arrange accommodation?

Yes, we offer a regatta concierge service which means that in addition to arranging your race entry and berthing we can also recommend and book accommodation ashore, flights, transfers and restaurant bookings as well as much more.* * 10% service charge applies for regatta concierge services

Once you have booked a charter we will be in touch to gather crew information in order to handle the race entry on your behalf. As the regatta date approaches we will connect you with the Boat Captain via Whatsapp chat and provide useful information on both the event and on the location. We are available at any time via phone or email to answer any other questions or queries you may have.

What is the security deposit for?

The security deposit is to cover damage to the yacht, that is more than just general wear and tear that would be expected when racing. In the worst case scenario it will cover the excess should there be the need for a claim on the yacht’s insurance. However, it is also there to cover less serious damage that does not warrant an insurance claim like damages to sails. If there is no damage then we will refund the security deposit in the week following the charter. If there are any damages the value of these damages will be assessed and the balance of the security deposit refunded after these costs have been deducted.

What are individual berths/crew spaces?

Crew spaces are the perfect option for individuals or small groups to participate in a regatta without having to find the whole team. You can pay ‘per person’ and join a a crew of like minded individuals and go racing under the guidance of a professional skipper and crew, learn some new skills, meeet some new people and have fun all at the same time!

How do I book a crew space with LV Yachting?

Please complete the booking form and then we will send you an invoice for a 50% deposit, once these have both been received your space will be confirmed. The remaining 50% balance will be due 3 months before the event

What is included?

The price includes all boat and race costs, professional skipper and crew. In most cases, food when racing is also included.

You will need to pay for flights, transfers, meals and accommodation ashore and personal insurance.

Can I sleep aboard?

We always encourage finding accommodation ashore as the boats are not air-conditioned and marina facilities are often basic, but on some of our boats there can be an options to stay onboard. This is on a first come, first served basis

As the regatta date approaches we will provide joining instructions on where and when to meet the boat as well as useful information regarding the event and location. We will also connect you via Whatsapp with the boat crew.

USA 76 is a thoroughbred racing yacht of the International America's Cup Class. She's pure carbon fibre, fast and fun to sail. Truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to sail a piece of America's Cup history.

USA 76 was launched in 2011 by Brad and Karen Webb to provide guests with the ultimate sailing experience. Consistent winds, mild year-round temperatures, and spectacular scenery make San Francisco Bay one of the most iconic places in the world to sail. Many of the world’s greatest sailors and several America’s Cup Teams have been launched from these waters. San Francisco’s entry for the 31st America’s Cup in 2003 was the yacht patriotically named USA 76 with Brad Webb sailing in the bowman position. Brad is still sailing today with Orcale Racing defending the America's Cup. 

USA 76 capacity is 20 passengers. We offer Clif bars and bottled water aboard each trip. There is no other food or beverage allowed. SPECIAL NOTE: There is no restroom aboard this vessel so strategic planning is required :-)

You can buy tickets for her various trips. If you want the boat for private charter, 20 tickets must be purchsed.

How to take on a Caribbean yacht charter for racing

Will Bruton looks at the Caribbean yacht charter market for racing yachts and answers common questions sailors have about heading off for some sunshine racing

Regatta organisers are reporting a boom in Caribbean yacht charter entries, and, with more yachts available than ever before, the opportunities to pay and play for some racing in the sun have never been better.

The main Caribbean race season runs from February through to the end of April each year. For some the season begins with the RORC Transatlantic race in January, or the ARC rally in November or January, delivering the boat from Europe to the Caribbean.

The first big event is the RORC Caribbean 600 offshore, while the first major inshore event of the year is the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta . The season progresses with a series of superyacht events, but also mixed fleets at St Thomas International Regatta, the BVI Spring Regatta, Les Voiles de St Barths, finishing up with Antigua Sailing Week in April.

Plenty of local competitors move from island to island for multiple events, as well as US entries who can benefit from short flight times for their crews. For sailors in Europe though, getting a yacht across the Atlantic and back is the main obstacle to taking part, particularly if not planning a full Caribbean season campaign.

Chartering, particularly chartering a yacht that is equipped ready to race, presents a much easier way to compete for those short on time. While headline costs for race charter appear high at initial glance, gathering friends together means it can become much more reasonable. Compared to delivery or shipping fees and the wear and tear of taking your own yacht across, it can also be more cost effective.

Growth in Caribbean yacht charter

While still a niche segment of the charter industry, recently there has been an increase in the number of yachts available to hire for racing, and are ‘race equipped’. It’s a shift that hints at how sailors increasingly want to jump onto a boat and enjoy racing without the worry of ownership.

“When we started, we were the only ones offering decent boats that were set up for racing; well maintained, a good set of sails, and a boat that, while not necessarily a racing yacht, is fun to sail,” explains Andy Middleton, who founded Global Yacht Racing with his partner, Claire Kennard, in 2004. Since then they have built a business focussed on making racing accessible, offering both entire boat charters and single berths aboard for major events including the Fastnet , RORC 600 and Round The Island Race .

“A good race charter demands a lot from us to ensure a fulfilling experience for the client. A thorough handover is so important when you are about to push the yacht to go fast. We are straightforward about the condition of everything on board. We know that in racing things do break, so it’s important to look at the condition of the sails, lines, and deck gear to identify what’s worn and to what degree. If something breaks after we’ve agreed it’s well worn, that’s OK. We work very closely with clients to deliver an experience that’s fun.”

Another company which focuses on racing charter is LV Yachting, which Lucy Jackson has built up over the past 10 years. A background racing Swans gave Jackson first-hand experience of what makes for a great race charter.

Now a key player in the market, LV Yachting offers charter at major events aboard a surprising range of yachts, as well as opportunities to pay for single berths.

“What differentiates a good racing charter from the general market is that every boat we offer is properly set up for competitive racing. Clients regularly finish on the podium. It’s also diverse. You can race a Volvo 65, a Salona 45, an 80ft Swan; so repeat customers have often had a lot of interesting experiences and access to very competitive racing without the hassle.

“We take care of almost everything, so the logistics involved are minimal, certainly much less than bringing your own boat. We handle race registration, berthing and can organise transfers and accommodation ashore if you want as well. Over the years we’ve built up repeat clients who appreciate being able to just turn up and go.”

A helping hand

Race charter has some obvious challenges when it comes to insurance. Underwriters keep a keen eye on how much the risk factor increases when racing. Charter companies and yacht owners almost always ameliorate the increased premiums by putting one of their own team on board. “If you’re chartering to race, the experienced person we provide is there to become part of your team and help you get the most out of the yacht,” explains Lucy Jackson.

“It’s important to say they’re not there to skipper the boat – unless of course you want them to. In reality a few customers are initially resistant when they learn they have to have someone sailing with them, but then they see someone that knows the yacht and its nuances who just becomes part of the team.”

For charterers with less racing history, or who perhaps want to sail with friends and family, the charter company can increase the number of professional crew on board. “We can set things up for those with no experience or, for those wanting to compete at a high level, provide professional crew as well; we try to be flexible to shape the best possible experience we can, making it really tailored to the client.”

Keeping it simple

The bareboat classes are home to a surprising number of serial race charterers on the Caribbean circuit. Astride de Vin is a regular participant in the St Maarten Heineken Regatta as a crew member of ‘Something Hot’, an all-female team which charters standard bareboat yachts through Sunsail. This year they sailed a Sun Odyssey 41.

“We bareboat charter in the event primarily to have a really good time, but we are certainly also eager to win. For 25 years there has been a ladies sailing team participating in the regatta. Ours is all about female empowerment and celebrating the joy of togetherness.”

The Something Hot team, despite not sailing a high-performance yacht, gets results, last year finishing 1st and 3rd in individual races.

“It is an expensive thing to do, but at the same time, I understand the risk level a charter company and their insurers are taking,” de Vin cautions. “This also is part of the reason there is quite a high deposit. The companies have to work really hard to deliver good service during the competition itself. Sunsail was on the water to fix things when needed, even between the races.”

Choosing to charter a standard bareboat rather than one set up for racing inevitably involves a compromise. In the case of the Sunsail Caribbean fleet, for example, yachts are not equipped with spinnakers, poles, or cruising chutes. However, events like Antigua Sailing Week include a specific bareboat class for yachts racing under white sails; meaning racing can arguably be just as competitive. Yachts are raced in ‘charter trim’ with restrictions on what can be removed.

Single berths

The other option for those who don’t want the commitment of chartering a whole yacht, is single berth crew places on charter yachts. Global Yacht Racing reports that around two-thirds of its business now comes from individuals buying a berth on board for an event, or related race training. They manage race prepped yachts for their owners to generate charter income with a fleet that includes a J/120, Sunfast 3300 and Beneteau First 47.7 .

“My background is as an instructor and examiner, but what I am keen on is the coaching side of racing; showing people that anyone can have fun doing it,” says Andy Middleton.

“We see a lot of people coming to us on their own who have had a bad first introduction to racing. Shouting, stress; all the usual things. Some have paid for this stressful experience and assumed it to be the norm. We work hard to do the opposite, showing racing doesn’t have to be like that, whatever your level of experience.”

Coaching included

Middleton and his team now have a system to ensure ‘pay to play’ racing works well and, ultimately, increases the chance of a win.

“When clients join a boat for a race event, we will figure out where they are best placed on the boat and train together beforehand. The biggest focus by far is on clear communication because we have proven that’s what gets results. The biggest surprise for many is how a crew that has never sailed before quite often gets a place on the podium. We’ve proved you can do that, turn up, pay for a place, and achieve a great result.”

Training comes as part of the package when buying a berth for a racing event via Global Yacht Racing, with the scope varying according to the nature of the race. “In the case of the Round the Island Race we’d do a full day of practice. For the Fastnet it would be several weekends.”

History Volvo 70

The Volvo 70 Ocean Race Yacht is a class of racing yachts designed for the Volvo Ocean Race. It was first used in the 2005–06 race and replaced the Volvo Ocean 60 Yachts, which were first raced in 1993. The Volvo Ocean 70 uses a Canting keel which is capable of canting transversely up to an angle of 40 degrees.

The Volvo Open 70 race rules are similar to those of a Formula One race team, as there is not a specific yacht design but a set of rules which competing yachts need to adhere to.

Ocean Breeze, formerly Telefonica Blue is a second-generation Volvo Ocean Race boat. She became 3rd in the 2008-2009 Ocean Race, sailing under the Spanish flag with Dutch Skipper Bouwe Bekking. After the race, the boat was sold to an Irish/Chinese Team. “ Sanya Lan ” became 6th in the 2011-2012 VOR Race with Skipper Mike Sanderson. The boat has undergone a total refit in 2016 and 2018.

Ocean Breeze is under new ownership since 2020.

The maximum crew for offshore racing is 20 and for inshore racing 25. The boat comes with a professional skipper, and up to 2 or 3 crew members depending on your needs.

The aim is to deliver a great experience to everybody onboard, first-time sailors or more experienced sailors and not too win in spite of everything. Johannes is happy to let you do anything on board and he is there to assist you. You will be an active team member and not just a passenger.

When day racing there will be two days of training. The first day consists of familiarisation with the boat and during the second day, you will go trough sailing manoeuvres and procedures.

For a longer offshore race ideally, there are 4 days of training and preparation. On day 1 there is a briefing for half a day. On the second day, you will go through manoeuvres and procedures. On day 3 there will we some serious training and the day before the race there will be no sailing but the boat will be prepared for the race.

While racing we have prepared or freeze-dried food on board so we are suited for all conditions and can focus on performance.

Watch System

During a longer offshore race, there will be a watch system of two watches consisting of 4 hours during the day and 3 hours during the night.

The maximum crew for offshore sailing is 20 and for inshore sailing 25. The boat comes with a professional skipper, and up to 2 or 3 crew members depending on your needs. You will be an active crew member and not just a passenger.

We usually cook onboard unless you want to have the Ocean Race experience with freeze-dried food.

During a longer distance voyage, there will be two watches of 2×6 hours during the day and 3×4 hours during the night. In demanding conditions we switch to a watch system of 3×4 during the day and 3×4 during the night. But we try to avoid demanding conditions and we will use the engine to escape from wind shadows around island capes for example.

Johannes Schwarz

Johannes Schwarz is a very experienced Volvo 60 and 70 skipper and sail trainer and logged more than 250000 NM offshore. He flourishes in guiding and training young talents and is very patient. Johannes is a great motivator for sailors and teams and is leading them safely across oceans and race courses.  Johannes is also a promotor of women in sailing. In the first Volvo Legend Race in 2011, he raced on Volvo 60 Cuba Libre with an all-female team consisting of former Volvo Ocean Race competitors.

Johannes logged more than 250.000 offshore miles on 50-footers, Volvo 60’s and Volvo 70s. He started his career running his own sailing and windsurfing school. In 1990 he initiated the first Austrian Whitbread Challenge project and run that for 8 years as technical director. He competed as skipper in the Hongkong Challenge Round the World Race (first participation of an Austrian team at a round-the-world race). From 2006 Johannes owned and skippered several Volvo 60’s and 70’s, starting with VO60 ASSA ABLOY (2005-2008), additionally running and racing VO60 Tokio2 (2007-2010), VO60 Cuba Libre (ex Heineken) (2010-2015), and VO70 Green Dragon from 2015. From 2018 on he is additionally running and racing Volvo 70 E1 ex Ericsson and from 2019 Volvo 70 Monster Project, ex Kosatka.

The aim is to deliver a great experience to everybody onboard, first-time sailors or more experienced sailors and not to win in spite of everything. Johannes is happy to let you do anything on board and he is there to assist you. You will be an active team member and not just a passenger. Ocean Breeze is despite this a very serious candidate for winning races as she is a Volvo 70 in top condition.

THE PACKAGE

THE BOOKING

The booking is binding and applicable to the Charterer. Transfer of the booking to another person is only possible following written consent of the Charter Company and receipt of a completed Conditions of Booking Contract from the transferee.

A charter is secured upon receipt of a deposit of 50% of the Package Price. The balance due date will be not later than 6 weeks prior to the commencement of the Package.

CANCELLATION

In case of cancellation by the Charterer the following charges are made:

• Up to 6 months prior to the commencement of the Package: 30% of the Package Price
• Less than 10 weeks prior to the commencement of the Package: 50% of the Package Price
• Less than 6 weeks prior to the commencement of the Package: 70% of the Package Price
• Between 6 weeks and 2 weeks prior to the commencement of the Package: 90 % of the Package Price
• Less than 2 weeks prior to the commencement of the Package: 100 % of the Package Price

If the Charterer fails to wholly or partly complete the Package, there is no pro-rata refund given.

Participation in the Package is not possible until all payments have been received.

THE CHARTER COMPANY

Is entitled to withdraw from this agreement if its implementation is impossible by special circumstances, such as unavoidable unavailability of the intended vessel or a replacement vessel, by the unavailability of the planned number of participants of 7 people, strikes, natural disasters, epidemics, war, civil unrest sovereign assemblies, damage, heavy weather or similar serious events. In case of cancellation by the Charter Company for any of these reasons, the Charterer will be refunded a pro-rata daily rate without interest for that proportion of the Package Dates outstanding after the date and time on which the loss or disablement occurred without any deduction of a processing fee.

Further claims against the Charter Company and/or Charter Agent, for whatever reason, are excluded.

The Charter Company has a yacht and P&I insurance and is insured against all liabilities. However, the Charter Company will not accept any liability in case of damage or injury, due to whatever cause. There is no insurance coverage on board for baggage and valuables. The Charterer is required to provide their own insurance for travel and accident (including emergency transport evacuation) that covers yacht racing.

In the case of delay by weather or accident, no liability is assumed by the Charter Company and/or Charter Agent. In departure and arrival ports not specified in the Package, claims against the Charter Company and/or Charter Agent are excluded.

THE CHARTERER

The Charterer may invite up to 18 additional guests to operate as crew for the event.

The Charterer represents their guests as a single entity for the purposes of this agreement and signs on their behalf.

For insurance purposes, each guest is insured for at least 15 minutes with clothing to swim in deep water without a flotation device, providing the Charterer agrees by signing this agreement that they are in good health and do not suffer from contagious diseases, and do not suffer seizures. ALL health conditions MUST BE NOTIFIED in writing to the Charter Company prior to joining the Yacht.

The Charterer is participating in a sporting event and has no agreement for either carriage or a package holiday.

The Charterer’s guests are on board as Crew Members, not passengers and participate at their own risk in all sailing and related activities, and each is fully responsible for himself/herself.

The Charterer’s guests shall take all necessary precautions for his/her own person, for example, putting on the life vest, clipping on above and below deck, transfer from the vessel to shore, etc.

The Charterer commits to comply with all applicable regulations on board and accepts that animals, weapons and illegal substances are not allowed on board. Furthermore, the Charterer agrees that there is no consumption of alcohol on board during navigation, neither the Charterer and his guests may be alcoholised when departing for navigation.

The Charterer’s guests accept that in all ship manoeuvres and the usual work onboard a yacht they will take part to the best of their ability. It is agreed that at all times during the Package they will be helpful and considerate to all Crew Members.

In the event of malfunctions, the Charterer’s guests are obliged to do everything reasonable to help rectify the problem and to minimize possible damages.

All costs and damages arising from the non-observance of passport, visa, customs, currency and health regulations, shall be borne by the Charterer who is advised to establish the implications of local regulations.

Acceptance of the Yacht shall imply the Yacht, its equipment, fixtures and fittings and sail wardrobe are in proper working order.

THE CHARTER COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE

The task of the Representative is to sail the yacht with the help of the Charterers, as well as to take sole responsibility for the navigation and seamanship. The Representative alone has the responsibility to make decisions that affect the safety of the charterers and yacht. The Representative has all rights and obligations in accordance with the valid law of the sea. All Package destinations may be changed due to weather conditions at the discretion of the Representative.

THE PACKAGE PRICE

Is inclusive of:

• The Skipper who does not necessarily have to be the Helmsman
• Two days of yacht familiarization and race training (or the amount of days agreed)

Is not inclusive of:

• Berthing fees
• Food and drinks
• Yacht fuel, water & gas costs

All costs incurred on land are for the account of the Charterer.

THE AGREEMENT

The invalidity of any provision of this Agreement shall not invalidate the entire Agreement. The correction of mistakes, misprints and miscalculations reserved.

Verbal offers or agreements are only valid if confirmed in writing.

Claims under this Agreement must be made within one month of the last day of the Package. Any right to make claims beyond this period is forfeit.

This agreement is governed by the substantive and procedural laws of Austria. I agree to the Conditions of thisAgreement:

Abeking & Rasmussen ‘s 41-meter superyacht Nurja (previously known as Silver Cloud) has been relaunched after an extensive refit at her home shipyard. Originally delivered in 1998, the vessel underwent a significant transformation at the shipyard where she was first built. The refit focused on modernizing the yacht’s systems, updating her exteriors and interiors, and enhancing her overall performance.

As the images showcase, in addition to the new exterior repaint featuring grey hues, the yacht had an extension to the aft section of the sun deck, creating additional dining and relaxation areas.

With her fresh new exterior look and improved functionality, NURJA is now ready to sail once more in luxury and style. The successful relaunch marks a new chapter for this extremely stable and seaworthy SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) superyacht.

• Private flight options are available through several fixed-base operators (FBO), like Jet Nassau and Odyssey Aviation. For a fee, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism offers expedited services at the airport when flying commercial or transferring to the FBO from Nassau. You can also fly into George Town, Staniel Cay, Norman’s Cay, or Eleuthera.
• A daily ferry runs from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama Island, approximately three hours, but make sure it makes sense for your charter base location.
• The Moorings can help organize travel, and brokers can recommend travel arrangements.
• D’Offay recommends your broker organize transportation to the boat to ensure you get a reliable vehicle and driver. Minimize carrying valuables, check travel advisories, and be aware of your surroundings.
