Royal Corinthian Plymouth Yacht Club reopens its doors

Like many businesses during the pandemic the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club has undergone a major transformation and is delighted to have re-opened its doors to members old and new once again.

Previously found on Plymouth Hoe it has now relocated to a new building within the historic area of the Barbican, an energetic waterside neighbourhood laced with cobblestone lanes.

Now only a short walk from many of the cities vibrant restaurants and overlooking the boats in Sutton Harbour it can be found nestled in a quiet corner of The Parade.

The club is housed in a former dairy built in 1902, later to become part of Lenkiewicz studio before housing the Plymouth Image Bank and has been carefully refurbished blending its impressive history with a bright, modern, welcoming bar and lounge in which to relax, with inviting decor and a purpose-built community space with cooking facilities.

Founded in 1877 and proud to bear the Royal Warrant, the club has dispensed with old fashioned rules, brass - buttoned blazers and flag obsession, often associated with yacht clubs. Instead you’ll find a friendly bunch of people working together to provide a warm welcome to all whether you have arrived by boat or not!

You may find the Commodore serving behind the bar or the Vice Commodore heating pies in the kitchen. The conversation flows, with talk of the weather and tides as well as friendly and engaging hospitality.

Membership is currently open to anyone that has an interest in the water and the comprehensive drinks list on offer is at attractive club prices.

Members can dine-in at the club - locally made pasties and pies are on the menu but you can also order your favourite ‘take-out’ to be delivered to and eaten in-house - choices include traditional fish and chips, Indian, Chinese, Asian, pizza and tacos!

For those with their own boats, sailing or motor, and anyone interested in crewing a regular calendar of day and weekend trips exploring the Devon and Cornish coastlines is offered, or even visits further afield.

“We are so pleased to have found the ideal home for our members, guests and visiting yachtsmen and women.” said Julie Morton, Vice Commodore at RPCYC.

We are looking forward to welcoming new members to our ranks over what we are sure will be an exciting first summer”.

Most spectacular of all is our RPCYC viewing lounge – The Armada Room – with its elevated position providing a panoramic vista over the whole of the harbour. An ideal place from which to watch the sailing whilst enjoying a nice coffee – or something a little stronger! A new private members club could open on the Barbican in the coming months, if planning permission is approved.

Management at Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club have submitted a pre-application to change a Barbican property use to a private members club with bar and club facilities.

The new club would be held at 25 The Parade, which was previously a film and photographic archive store.

Next door is 'The Bottling Plant', a Grade II listed building was once  critically-acclaimed artist Robert Lenkiewicz 's studio and features  a huge one-of-a-kind Lenkiewicz mural  on the outside of the building, though this has been crumbling and fading for quite some time.

Plymouth Live reported last week that Plymouth City Council had received an application for a premises license so a new bar could serve alcohol within the premises at 5 Southside Street.

Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club was previously based at the Corinthian on the Hoe, but Plymouth Live understands this is now a wedding and events venue run by a separate company.

A pre-application submitted by Nick Haynes, a director of Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club outlines the club's proposal for the new member's club.

While the external facade of the building would not be altered, management wish to change the building's use to a private members club with bar and club facilities.

Floor plans for the club show a bar, beer cellar and a large lounge on the ground floor, large lounge and kitchen on the first floor and an office and meeting space on the second floor.

Plymouth's historic Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club is set to go up for sale.

Built in 1688 as part of the Royal Citadel, the imposing property that has its own access to the water,   has been used as a club house since 1896 and it is the first time on living memory it has ever gone on the market.

It is looking for bids above the guide price of £750,000.

Michael Easton, Director at JLL in Exeter, which is handling the sale, said: "The sale will attract considerable interest due to its truly outstanding position on the waterside. This is to secure the long-term future of the club and members will be looking for alternative premises, or to continue in some capacity in the existing building if the marketing programme allows for this."

The Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club has a long history of organising Dinghy and Yacht racing in and around Plymouth.

The yacht club is thought to be one of the last remaining privately owned freehold sites on the water’s edge in Plymouth Sound.  It has  direct access to the water from its own dinghy park and has outstanding 180-degree views across the sea from Mount Batten to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall.

The freehold title includes a waterfront dinghy park, changing facilities and the sailing office.

royal corinthian yacht club plymouth

Mr Easton said: "We hope to attract interest far and wide. The club has been run both for its members and as a function and wedding venue for many years and is available as a trading venue with revenues of circa £400,000 per annum.

"There are approved plans to improve the access and visibility from Madeira Road which we feel will also be of some benefit to a future owner. With the people of Plymouth now looking ahead to the schedule of events taking place in Plymouth in 2020, where better could this be celebrated."

The property is available by informal tender with bids invited by no later than midday  March 15 2019.  The business will continue to trade during the process.

Find out why you should join the Club and even take a look at our member Testimonials- words from our members themselves on why they joined the club.

The Royal Corinthian provides facilities for a wide variety of boats. There are fleets of day racing boats, running weekend series of races which offer challenges for the experienced sailor and excellent opportunities for non-boat owners to crew. Many members take part in national and international events.

There’s also an active cruiser section of sailing and motor boats with members cruising to meets round the east coast as well as individuals who sail much further afield. There’s also the occasional fun race. The club owns the moorings in front of the Clubhouse and members can hire them at competitive rates.

Members’ children are welcome in the Club and, once they are 7/8 years old, they are eligible to join the Corinthian Otters where they learn to sail with qualified, experienced trainers. The training is underpinned by strict safety rules and there are a limited amount of spaces available to new joiners with priority being given to the children of our members. Fees are covered by family membership. (See below)

There is, of course, a friendly social scene around the sailing. The Lounge Bar on the ground floor, and the Dining Room on the first floor, have unrivaled views of the river and the Club serves meals on Wednesday nights as well as across the entire weekend. More info here on the Club and it’s history .

Annual subscriptions are due 1st January but if you join later in the year, this will be adjusted pro rata. There is no joining fee and subscriptions can be paid in a lump sum or by installments by direct debit.

How do I start the application process?

You will need to fill in an application form supported by letters from a proposer and seconder. These must be full members of the Club who will put your name forward to the General Committee for approval. If you already know a member, he or she can propose you but if you do not know anyone, don’t worry, we can arrange for you to meet our Flag Officers.

What if I can’t sail?

All our classes welcome novices and will encourage you to join them to gain experience. Sometimes classes organise crew-training days which would be useful for you. You can get experience across various classes to help you to decide where you feel most at home.

What about my wife, husband, partner?

This is covered by making an application in your joint names either for full or temporary membership as above. Couples benefit from a 50% reduction of one of the individual subscriptions.

Is there family membership?

Joint full members whose child/children have reached the age of seven, can apply for Family Membership which will give their children priority entrance to the Corinthian Otters without further fees.

Can I join as a social member?

There is no special category for social members – all members can play as full a part in the social or sailing life as they wish. Boat owners who wish to race, pay race fees according to the class of boat.

Do I have to own a boat?

Not at all – if every member was a boat owner, there would be nobody to crew!
