A 53 ft Sailing Catamaran

Wild Hearts is a Gold Coast 53-foot catamaran sailboat designed for open-ocean sailing. Public cruises and private sailing charters depart from Orange Beach, Perdido Key, and Gulf Shores.

A Seaworthy Ride

Built in St. Croix USVI, this US Coast Guard certified vessel is made of strip planked cedar and epoxy for unrelenting strength and durability. Her spacious decks and cabin spaces are designed to provide you with premium comfort as we ride the cresting waves. With a mast that rises 53ft in the air and a sail area of over 1000 square feet, she will easily whisk you away at double digit speeds – even as her wide 30-foot beam ensures you have a safe, smooth, and seaworthy sail.

Wounded Warriors

Wild Hearts is honored to partner with the Wounded Warriors of Pensacola, Florida, to give back to our country’s heroes who were wounded while serving. In 2014, Wild Hearts hosted more than 30 veterans and families in conjunction with a week-long vacation at an Orange Beach luxury condo. In addition, Wild Hearts’ sister company, Perdido Beach Services, provided complimentary lounge chairs, umbrellas and kayaks to our Wounded Warriors. We look forward to continuing this service and honoring our nation’s wounded heroes through this program each year.

Come Aboard Wild Hearts with Captain Zach Smith

Captain Zach Smith – also known as Captain Zach “Sparrow” – may not be a pirate, but he shares the love of wind, salt and sea that often lies in a sailor’s heart.

Zach is a homegrown ‘Bama boy raised in Auburn, Alabama. Alabama fans beware: Capt. Zach may make you walk the plank.

Feeling the pull to explore island life, Capt. Zach eventually moved to the Virgin Islands. He spent five years in St. John where he spent his spare time learning to sail, paddleboard, dive and wind surf. He loved it so much that when he finally headed back to Alabama, he sought out a job that would keep him on the water. His coastal home took some of the stress out of his search – at his first job interview he was told to sail a small Hobie Cat through the beach surf and back again. He sailed through with flying colors and has never looked back.

Today, Captain Zach spends his days sailing Wild Hearts around the spectacular waters of Orange Beach and Perdido Key. He knows the local waters and enjoys introducing people to his passion for sailing. He and his crew welcome you aboard and sincerely hope you have an adventure you’ll keep in your heart forever.

When asked why he sails Captain Zach answers, “Sailing gives me such freedom; I feel at home on the water, and it is never the same twice.”

Sail away with Deckhand Brittney Vandiver

Brittney Vandiver has been with the crew of the Wild Hearts since the 2020 season. She earned her status as a boating and tourism industry veteran long ago. The daughter of a boat captain, life on the water came naturally. Brittney could be found tagging along with her father at the marina while still in diapers. She began her journey as a deckhand in 1999 at the age of 12 by helping her parents start a dining and dolphin cruise business in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Brittney is married with two children. Avery, her son, is 11, and her daughter, Haley, is 7. Her husband, Daniel, unsurprisingly is also a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain. Brittney was born and raised on the Gulf Coast. Boating and the Gulf of Mexico are deeply rooted parts of her life. Helping guests experience the joy of boating, and the beauty of the Gulf Coast is what makes her the happiest.

The dolphin cruises are offered on The Explorer, which is a super comfortable, easy-to-board boat located in The Wharf.

We had not been out of the dock for 5 minutes before we saw the 1 st of many dolphins on our cruise. We were shocked at how many sets of dolphins we saw on a two-hour dolphin tour.

The boat captain does a phenomenal job of sharing educational information about the bottlenose dolphins that reside in the Intracoastal Waterways and Wolf Bay without sounding like a teacher who is drilling you with info.

He had us laughing and learning while soaking in the epic dolphin cruise adventures. Since the dolphin cruise is focused on the intercoastal and Wolf Bay the water was pretty smooth. We had a few waves that we rode over from other boats but in general it was nice and calm.

My sister in law came with us and she gets horrible motion sickness and she did great on the dolphin tour. I will say that she took preventative motion sickness meds ahead of time to make sure that she could enjoy the excursion.

I lost count of the number of dolphins that we saw on our two hour excursion. We also saw a Loon which was a complete shock. We learned on the trip that Common Loons migrate to the Gulf for the winter.

It was such a surprise we didn’t even think to take a picture we were just sitting there in awe at seeing one near the boat. We also saw Osprey, quite a few Great Blue Herons, and tons of other birds.

If you are a birder you will enjoy being out on the quiet bay seeing the bird life.

The kids on the boat had an epic time pointing out the friendly dolphins and cheering when they saw them. The boat made sure the little ones had comfortable life jackets so they were safe and well taken care of.

Cetacean Cruises offers a bar and cocktail/drink menu when you board the boat. You can start a tab and enjoy blended drinks, bottles of water, soda, and more while looking for dolphins. They accept cash or credit card for drinks while on board.

One thing I loved was we were able to add a tip to our booking when we paid for the cruise. This was a great way of making sure the staff was taken care of and we didn’t have to bring cash onboard a moving boat and worry it might fall out of our pockets.

Don't worry you can also tip the crew anytime you are onboard The Explorer.

The crew was amazing! They had us laughing, dancing, and celebrating the relaxing dolphin cruise experience we were having.

On our way back to The Wharf Marina the crew had everyone dancing in their seats to fun throwback 80s music and Caribbean music. It was so much fun!

We had such a great experience we are already talking about when we can head out on another Orange Beach Dolphin Cruise.

It was the perfect relaxing dolphin cruise along the Alabama Gulf Coast. The entire family will enjoy this cruise through the surrounding waters of Orange Beach.

I still can't believe the number of dolphin sightings we had during this dolphin cruise.

The marine life we saw on the dolphin cruise was amazing. I still can't believe how many dolphins we saw.

Things to bring with you on the Cetacean Cruise dolphin tour:

• Sunscreen/sunglasses
• A light jacket depending on the weather
• A great attitude ready for fun
• Camera with a great wildlife lens
• Cell phone harness or a way to make sure it is secure
• Valid ID if you plan to enjoy the onboard bar.

Please do not bring a cooler, outside food or drink, or wear high heels (they are not allowed on the boat).

Things to know to plan your Cetacean Cruise Dolphin Cruise

There is covered and uncovered seating on the Cetacean Cruise Explorer boat so you can pick if you want to be out in the hot Orange Beach, Alabama sun or covered and looking out the sides.

There is an enclosed restroom on board but we highly suggest using the bathroom on the wharf so you don’t have to worry about the boat rocking while you are trying to relieve yourself.

Overall we were really impressed with the dolphin tour with Cetacean Cruises! We had a ton of fun and would happily book the tour again. My husband and I are already talking about needing to head out again and bring our DSLR Camera with us to get dolphin photos.

We had no idea we would see so many and wished we had come prepared for the dolphin tour. We did learn that about 70 dolphins call Wolf Bay home so they are seen all the time.

This dolphin cruise stays in the protected waters of the Intercoastal Waterway and does not go out into the Gulf of Mexico.

Cetacean Cruises offers a few different Dolphin Cruises in Orange Beach.

Dolphin Eco Tour - 90 minute tour

Dolphin and Nature Eco Tour - 2 hour tour

Sunset Dolphin and Nature Cruise - 2 hours

Boat information

40 foot catamaran with a bathroom, snack bar and drinks, half covered for sun and shade, open bow area for walking around, AND kids can help drive the boat.

We experienced a really smooth ride on a blue-sky day! The vessel was easy to board even my Mother in Law who uses a cane was able to step up onto the boarding ramp easily.

That being said the boat is not handicapped accessible. Wheelchairs and strollers are not permitted on board. However, canes and walkers are welcome.

One cool thing about the Explorer boat is it only needs 16-18 inches of water underneath it. This allows the boat to offer up close views of wildlife and scenery.

There is a bathroom available onboard the Explorer but we highly suggest using the nearby restroom before boarding the boat so you can enjoy the cruise.

Minimum Weight Requirement

Each passenger must be a minimum of 18 pounds to board.

Trips do not run if the temperature outside is below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If you feel like there may be poor weather during your trip make sure to call Cetacean Cruises to see if a different date is available for a dolphin cruise.

Sunset Cruise 

We absolutely love the sunset sailboat catamaran tour with Cetacean Cruises. The sunset catamaran cruise also leaves from The Wharf Marina.

You can board a 52 foot catamaran and enjoy a sailing cruise on the open waters with hopefully an epic Orange Beach sunset and hopefully lots of dolphins.

This epic Orange Beach Dolphin Cruise is available 7 days a week!

There is a minimum number of travelers of 15 participants required for this trip to depart.

Arrival Time - It is always a good idea to arrive 30 minutes before your dolphin cruise so you can stop at the ticket booth to get your wrist band and confirm your cruise registration. There are benches and seating available nearby.

Make sure to look for dolphins and wildlife while waiting for your dolphin cruise! We saw multiple Bottlenose dolphins right off of The Wharf Marina.

Villaggio Grille - Epic restaurant located at the Wharf. Everything from pizza to the best fish my husband has had in the area.

It has been said that sailing is more than a sport, it's a lifestyle. If you're interested in sailing, or would simply like to "test the waters", there are some great options for you in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. The Gulf Shores region is home to numerous sailing charter companies, who will take you on a tour or provide instruction.

The options for Gulf Shores & Orange Beach sailing are plentiful, with many great charter companies near our Gulf Shores condos and Orange Beach rentals . From old school sail boats to modern catamarans, you can enjoy sailing in a small private group or in good sized public crowd. Wedding parties, marriage proposals, or combine your sail boat adventure with a stop at a local swimming hole. Sailing is a great way to spend a day.

A few of the charter companies in the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area, along with a brief description of what they offer in terms of Orange Beach & Gulf Shores sailing, are shown below.

Captain Bo, or Captain Randy will take you out on a sail boat tour of your choice. From a Sunrise Coffee Cruise across Perdido Bay ($285), to an all-day Gulf Adventure. ($985). Other options include a Moonlight Bay Cruise, a Private Sunset Getaway, or a Morning Mimosa Run. They sail on a Brewer 42 and a Beneteau Oceanis 351 sloop-rigged sailboat.

The Daedalus is a custom designed boat. The boat has a porthole below the waterline. The boat is a two-mast Ketch/Yawl sailboat, with a rich history of racing, bay charters and Ocean Cruising. Trips include a Dolphin Cruise, A Sunset Cruise, as well as shrimping and twilight cruises.

Sailing on a 53 foot catamaran sail boat is a nice way to see the Gulf. The Wild Heart is just that. The boat is made of strip planked cedar, and has a mast that rises 72 feet in the air. Its sail area has over 1000 square feet. The Wild Heart can take you on a Morning Dolphin Cruise, A Kayak Adventure, or A Sunset Cruise. The Wild Heart is also available for corporate or private outings.

Sailing on the Windy Ways is quite an adventure. The Windy Ways is a 48 foot ketch, with a center cockpit and a covered pilot house. The captain is Captain Skip. He is a USCG Master Licensed Captain. Captain Skip can take you crabbing, shrimping, oyster digging, or just on a nice cruise. He's an expert on the land, water, plants and animals in the Gulf Shores area that make staying at our Orange Beach condos and Gulf Shores rentals so beautiful.

End another perfect day in Orange Beach, AL with a sunset sailing cruise! Our two-hulled sailboat offers a smooth, stable ride as we sail off into a golden sunset. This two-hour sail is aboard the Cetacean, a 52-foot Hawaiian catamaran, and we skim along the waters of Orange Beach, Alabama. We sail in the back bays and protected waters of the Intracoastal Waterway to ensure a smooth and beautiful boating experience. Our sailboat is the only sailing vessel that offers a full service cocktail bar onboard in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Besides watching the stunning sunset, keep a lookout for marine life and coastal wildlife. We often see bald eagles, seagulls, herons, and osprey flying near the boat, and a sighting of some of the dolphins in our resident pod. You cannot forget to bring a camera for this relaxing Orange Beach sunset sail!

Customers must be prepared to show a physical, valid form of ID when ordering alcoholic beverages. You must be at least 21 years of age to order and consume alcoholic beverages. Expired IDs are NOT valid. Valid forms of ID include:

• Valid U.S. Uniformed Service Identification [Military ID]
• Valid passport
• Valid Alabama non-drivers ID issued by Dept. of Public Safety
• Chevron down Cancellation Policy
