Heavenly Twins 26/27

This best-seller from the 1970s remained in production for 27 years – without doubt a record for cruising multihulls. Of course, this little catamaran has evolved, but with its two coachroofs, central cockpit, aftstepped rig and canoe sterns, it retains a personality all of its own, whichever version it is!

In 1971, the Heavenly Twins 26 had a few competitors in its country of origin, Great Britain: we remember the famous Iroquois (see MW172). But unlike this model, which clearly displayed a desire for performance, the Heavenly Twins would be defined as a minimalist adventurer, not unlike the Catalac 8M - even though the latter had certain house-boat qualities. The tour de force of the Heavenly Twins is to manage to fit two coachroofs separated by a central cockpit on hulls only 27 feet (8.20 m) in length.

In the end, the competitors of this baffling catamaran are in fact monohulls. British skippers looking for a large living space are seduced by this small multihull, especially since its general design is based on “classic” codes such as the canoe sterns and the central cockpit. Its name also helps to finish convincing a sailor who might be still reluctant to switch to a multihull. All the more so as this name fits perfectly with a sailing boat with two hulls and two coachroofs... If we dig a little deeper, the influence of James Wharram is hard to dismiss. But it is

When I started looking into the background of these catamarans I was quite overwhelmed with the massive affection and respect they seem to have in the world of multihulls! Renowned for their build quality, from 1981 onwards they were built by Heavenly Cruising Yachts Ltd at Emsworth.

You have to be aware that this boat is the more spacious 27 – she has more headroom and a more practical cabin layout than her 26 ft sisters. As you would expect, the aft end of the hulls house double cabins, and the forward ends are home to the heads to starboard and the well proportioned galley to port.

Read any reviews from 1981 onwards and the pundits rave about them! Anyway – let’s go one better – come and see for yourself!

Distant Drummer is one of the finest Heavenly Twins catamarans available today. She was commissioned in 1994 and underwent an extensive upgrade and refit in 2007, the most significant part of which was the installation of a Beta Marine BD722 20HP 3 cylinder diesel engine mounted in the centre cockpit to twin Parker hydraulic motors making her fantastically manoeuvrable. This has kept weight out of the ends of the boat and created more interior space. She is a Mark IV Heavenly Twins 27 and represents the culmination of Pat Patterson's cruising catamaran designs. The HT27 has a well known pedigree and is held in high regard by sailors looking for a safe, strong, seaworthy and easily handled catamaran whether coastal cruising or exploring shallow creeks.

Ocean voyages and blue water cruising are all well within the remit of this superb mark. We have maintained and improved Distant Drummer to a high standard. In 2019 we took the decision to instruct Tollesbury Marina yard to coppercoat her hulls to a professional standard ensuring a lower maintenance regime in the years ahead. With an eye on more stringent environmental considerations we have removed her holding tank and installed an odour free compost toilet. This has had the added benefit of increasing storage space in her forward starboard hull.

Her full suit of sails includes a 140 sq ft fully battened mainsail in Dacron by Westaway sails with three slab reefing points. She has two furling 240 sq ft genoas, a 32 sq ft stay sail, 32 ft sq storm sail and a tr-radial cruising chute with snuffer. In addition to her wealth of features, fixtures and fittings, Distant Drummer is offered for sale with a variety of up-to-date Imray 2000 series charts and literature. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a superb coastal and blue water cruiser at an affordable price. She can be viewed afloat at Tollesbury Marina and on line through our website and YouTube channel.

Catamaran for sale by Boatshed Midi Canals. We are pleased to offer this Heavenly Twins 27 sailing catamaran for sale. The Heavenly Twins have a great following and more than one circumnavigation to their credit and at least one that was done single handed! That said, this one has cruised most of the Inland waterways of France too. How about that for versatility? It’s hard to believe that this particular boat was built back in 1991. Just look at the photos. A credit to the quality of her construction and to subsequent maintenance. Dry dock for antifouling and inspection in April 2014. With the central partition removed you have a veritable state room for an aft cabin and the single engine twin hydraulic drive is another big plus in my book. So…. Burgundy Canal? Or Panama Canal? Figures suggest three per cent of women are born with an irregular uterus, of which a heart-shaped womb is one of the most common defects. Turkish doctors were astounded when they came across a woman with a bicornuate uterus who gave birth to twins in 2013. The team at Kütahya Dumlupinar University published the tale in the journal Case Reports in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She said: 'My ovary has settled in on the muscles around the sacral nerves in my back that allow us to walk. 'Let's please not even talk about my uterine lining.
