Italy luxury yacht charter
Awash with elegant cliff-top villages and tempting cruising grounds around every corner, a luxury yacht charter is one of the best ways to discover all that Italy has to offer. Whether cruising around the unspoilt Aeolian islands, touring the impossibly pretty towns of the Amalfi coast and picture-perfect Capri , hitting the hotspots of Sardinia or revelling in the world-famous cuisine, culture and heritage of Tuscany and its islands, the Italian Riviera is always a good idea for a summer yacht charter.
Italy yacht season and weather
The peak summer months of July and August provide warm, sunny days with highs of 30°C. During August, many Italians take the entire month off work, meaning resorts and coastal areas are very busy. June and September offer quieter cruising grounds and very pleasant temperatures.
Climates do vary from north to south, with the south generally experiencing milder winters. In October, Sicily often has long, warm sunny days with temperatures still in the mid-20s.
Italy yacht charter itineraries
La Spezia’s Porto Lotti can accommodate yachts up to 180 metres and Porto Mirabello has capacity for yachts up to 140 metres – both good jumping-off points for Portovenere and the Cinque Terre. Rome Marina Yachting is in the port of Civitavecchia and has berths up to 100 metres. The marina is an hour and 15 minutes from Rome by car. On Sicily , Marina di Riposto is an ideal base for visiting Mount Etna and Catania, is six nautical miles from Taormina and has moorings for yachts up to 80 metres. Porto Cervo marina on Sardinia has moorings for yachts up to 120 metres. Porto di Mergellina in Naples has moorings for up to 75 metres.
Awash with old Hollywood glamour and synonymous with Italian aristocracy, the Amalfi coast is one of Italy’s most famous and coveted cruising grounds. Departing from Naples and the shadow of the volcanic peak of Vesuvius, charterers can venture 20 nautical miles to the low key isle of Procida, then take a 10 nautical-mile passage to the volcanic wonders of Ischia, hop south to the famed isle of Capri before cruising 20 nautical miles to Amalfi and the neighbouring gems of Ravello and Positano. For those wanting a mix of city and sea, charters can also make an overnight passage and arrive for sightseeing in Rome.
The island of Sardinia is a superyacht magnet and its famous Costa Smeralda attracts the yachting elite every summer. Mixing Michelin restaurants and five-star hotels with kaleidoscopic bays, sublime beaches and celebrity haunts such as Porto Cervo, Sardinia is one of the hottest charter destinations in Europe.
Charters in the Tuscan archipelago are equally bewitching, with the islands of Elba, Gorgona, Capraia, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri home to pristine shores, stunning coves and charming villages steeped in history. The islands form a convenient stepping stone between the coastline of Tuscany and Corsica, allowing charterers to combine the delights of Italy and the French island in on trip.
Further north the pearls of the Ligurian coastline, the UNESCO protected Cinque Terre, comprise the picture-perfect towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore cling to the cliffs, while romantic Portofino is a must-visit.
For natural wonders and more off-the-beaten-track adventures, the volcanic Aeolian Islands lie 25 miles off the north-east coast of Sicily and provide a varied and stunning itinerary. Sicily itself has also catapulted onto the charter scene, with an enticing mix of secret grottos, secluded coves and glittering beaches.
Italy by superyacht
Getting to italy.
The mainland has a host of international airports that handle commercial and private aircraft including those in Naples, Rome and Pisa.
Sardinia’s three airports of Olbia, Alghero and Cagliari all handle commercial and private jets.
Catania and Palermo airports in Sicily handle private and commercial aircraft.
Common charter routes in and out of Italy include crossings from the Adriatic and Croatia, and crossings from the French Riviera and western Mediterranean.
Legal requirements
Official documentation required from the crew for charters must be sent to the Italian authorities at least two weeks prior to arrival.
Yachts based in the European Union, on which VAT has already been paid or is not applicable, are welcome to enter Italy from any other EU country without having to undergo customs formalities. Vessels arriving from outside the EU must report to customs on arrival, however. The current VAT rate of 22% is reduced for yachts depending on how much time they have spent cruising in waters outside of the EU.
There are some local laws concerning where to anchor and swim, which can be punishable by fines. It is illegal to swim in an Italian harbour, so swimmers must dive in further out from shore.
Except when entering or leaving, motoring within 300 metres of the shoreline is forbidden. It is also prohibited to anchor within 200 metres of a beach in Italy.

What types of motor yachts can I charter in Italy?
Superyachts.
Nothing can match the prestige of cruising Italy’s most exclusive destination aboard one of the world’s finest superyachts. A luxury superyacht offers limitless levels of luxury with outstanding onboard amenities and a larger crew ready to cater to your every need.
Multi-hull vessels
Catamarans are the most popular form of multi-hull vessel, offering superb volume courtesy of their wide beam. They also typically boast a shallower draft compared to similar classed vessels, meaning they can easily access smaller marinas. Catamarans also offer superb stability, making them great for those who want maximum comfort. Multi-hull vessels are a great choice for those seeking plenty of space, including large groups of friends and families.
Expedition yachts
Expedition yachts are built to cruise the world’s most remote regions; however, they have appeal in the Mediterranean as these world-class vessels boast an enhanced number of tenders and water toys. If you want maximum adventure in Italy, charter a luxury crewed expedition vessel.
Sports yachts
Sports yachts are built for speed and are great for zipping along the Italian coastline. These charter vessels typically boast a planing hull, enabling them to reach high speeds, and are a superb option for those who want to maximize the number of ports of call in one itinerary.
Flybridge yachts
Flybridge yachts boast an elegant, large, open-air area at the top of the vessel. This voluminous space is ideal for large group gatherings and this flexible spot typically includes zoned areas for dining, sunbathing, and relaxing. Some flybridge yachts will also feature a bar and hot tub on the flybridge. The flybridge area is also a great spot for soaking up panoramic views of the Italian coastline.
Full displacement yachts
Full displacement yachts offer a smooth, quiet ride due to the hull shape that is designed to minimize the impact of the waves, especially in open seas. Due to their design, displacement motor yachts often boast spacious interiors when compared with planing yachts or sports yachts and are the perfect way to enjoy a truly relaxing Mediterranean vacation in Italy.
No matter what type of motor yacht you want to charter in Italy, Moran Yacht & Ship can connect you with your ideal vessel. Our team has access to the finest Italy yachts for charter and will craft a bespoke itinerary that perfectly matches your desired vacation experience. Contact our luxury yacht brokers today.
What is the Advanced Provisioning Allowance?
The Advanced Provisioning Allowance – or APA – is an additional fee that is paid on top of the base charter rate. This fee covers non-fixed costs, such as food and beverage, fuel, berthing fees, and on-land excursions. Your luxury yacht broker will estimate the APA based on your itinerary and vacation experience. At the end of your charter, the captain will provide a detailed breakdown of all costs incurred during your Italy yacht charter, and any funds left in the APA will be immediately returned to you.
How many crew will my Italy private yacht charter have?
The number of crew aboard a crewed motor yacht charter in Italy will vary depending on the size of the vessel; however, all crewed yachts will include, at the very least, a captain and several deckhands and stews/stewardesses. The world’s largest vessels can boast a crew of more than 20.
What amenities can I expect?
Every luxury yacht for charter is unique, so amenities vary between each vessel. Common amenities aboard a luxury motor yacht include:
- Swimming pools, almost all will be heated and some will also include counter-currents for fitness. Swimming pools on luxury yachts are often surrounded by sun pads, enabling you to soak up the Mediterranean sun.
- Hot tubs are a popular hub on luxury yachts, often located on the aft, bow, or flybridge. Enjoy a soak in your private yacht’s hot tub while enjoying a handcrafted cocktail prepared by the crew.
- Fully equipped gym. Expect state-of-the-art equipment, including bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, and weight-lifting equipment. Some luxury yachts will also include a dedicated fitness trainer as part of the crew, helping you to maintain your fitness regimen at sea.
- Spa area, including treatment rooms. Some luxury Italy charter yachts will also include various wellness facilities, including a sauna, steam room, and hammam.
- Beach clubs are typically located on a yacht’s aft, providing a seamless connection with the ocean. They often boast plenty of loungers and sun pads as well as a bar.
- Cinema room with state-of-the-art audio equipment; a superb way to enjoy family movie nights! Have your yacht’s crew prepare popcorn and your favorite treats and drinks for the ultimate cinematic experience.
- Voluminous salons, deck spaces, and staterooms ideal for intimate gatherings or extravagant yacht parties.
- Garage with water toys, including jet skis, snorkeling gear, stand-up paddleboards, water skis, and inflatables. Some yachts will also include scuba diving equipment and fishing gear.

Guide to Italy
Explore the history and beauty of this Mediterranean idyll
One of those rare but must-do experiences in life is to discover Italy. Few places on earth succeed in intermingling la dolce vita so effortlessly with a heady mix of art, history, architecture, opera, fashion, and food, not to mention the stunning coastlines to visit. Italy is a destination for a luxury yacht charter bucket list.
The Italian coasts attract many visitors each year on a Mediterranean yacht charter , not least because of the electric blue waters and vistas of picturesque coastlines, but primarily because once on land one is never far from the architectural treasures to be found in any in the major cities or rolling vineyards in the countryside.
The Ligurian Riviera The Ligurian Riviera offers a relaxed and enchanting experience, perhaps because of its history inspiring some of Italy’s most famous artists. The rugged coastline dotted with villages, cliffs and multi-coloured architecture is a sight to behold from a yacht. The village of Portofino offers a mix of designer boutiques and superb restaurants, and the five unspoilt villages of Cinque Terre make up a UNESCO protected national park. From Genoa, down the Riviera di Ponente to San Remo, this beautiful region is not to be missed.
The West Coast The west coast of Italy incorporates the stunning cities of Rome, Capri , Ravello, Naples , and Salerno. Tuscany is easily accessed, and with its formidable landscapes of rolling vineyards, medieval architecture, and statue of David overlooking Florence, there is little that comes close to competing. The island of Elba with curved bays and beaches, and the volcanic island of Ischia with its thermal springs and spa centres that take some beating, are perfect destination hotspots for those on a charter adventure.
Sardinia The island of Sardinia offers an exciting blend of a cosmopolitan lifestyle, prehistoric culture, and stunning natural beauty. Explore rugged coastal trails, kayak in secret bays, and meet friendly locals and the extraordinary wildlife in an island deceptively larger than its size. The island is also famous for boasting some of the finest beaches on the European coastline, with Costa Smeralda’s scalloped bays and Golfo di Orosei’s coves as real highlights.
Amalfi Coast In 1997 the Amalfi Coast was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is hardly surprising. The coastal scenery of beautiful hilltop towns, winding roads, and lemon groves edging the sparkling sea is enough to cement this area into travel folklore as of the most beautiful region to charter a yacht. It boasts an array of luxury resorts, world-class restaurants, and various little coves, and attracts A-listers from around the world as regular visitors.
Aeolian Islands The Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily, named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus. The island of Sicily brings with it history in the form of stunning ancient ruins and baroque churches, boutique shopping experiences in the capital Palermo, and not to mention Mount Etna, the famed volcanic mountain that dominates the skyline. An absolute must-visit is San Vito lo Capo, a beautiful curved bay with golden sands, the perfect end to an Italian charter.
Italian East Coast The east coast of Italy will offer you the delights of Venice , a city so perfectly created for those with a love of boats and the water, the very glamorous Ravenna, and the seaside spot of Rimini. Beautiful beaches and an area steeped in history surround the port town of Ancona, and just beyond, Puglia with its rustic charm, baroque churches, and relative seclusion wait for you.

ITALY: Country of romance and love
Amalfi coast, cinque terre, coast of tuscany - viareggio, bolgheri for foodies, tuscan archipelago national park.
Italy seems to have it all, surrounded by the majestic azure waters of five seas, the Mediterranean, Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, Ionian and Ligurian, and a yacht charter through the belpaese or “beautiful country”, whether on a megayacht , catamaran , or sailboat , will offer a breathtaking glimpse into a fascinating world blessed with stunning landscapes, diverse cultures, and deep rooted histories. The list of locations to explore on your charter vacation is vast, from the natural beauty of Positano, found in the Amalfi Coast, to the centuries-old villages of Cinque Terre to the romance of Venice and the glamorous beaches of Sardinia. Regardless of where you choose to cruise, the one thing guaranteed, the memories you create here will last a lifetime!
Stretching over 30 miles along the Sorrentine Peninsula, the Amalfi Coast is one of the Mediterranean’s most scenic yachting destinations. Lined with historic harbor towns, the sundrenched shores, rugged landscapes, and magnificent architecture are truly alluring. For a taste of chic seaside splendor, dock your private charter yacht in the stately port of Positano or on the lush island of Capri, filled with old-world glamour, posh boutiques, and elegant restaurants. Enticing visitors since the 9th century with her beauty and charm, a luxury yacht charter along the Amalfi Coast is a perfect way to enjoy a first class holiday spent with friends or family.
The beautiful and charming Cinque Terre, consisting of five tiny villages, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore , spread amongst the steeply terraced cliffs lining the Ligurian coast, is one of the more spectacular yacht charter destinations in Italy. Literally unchanged for over three centuries, most of the area is inaccessible by car and one must travel along rugged footpaths to get from place to place. Each town has its own unique appeal, but while here make sure to take a stroll down the Via Dell’Amore, or path of love, with magical views of the rocky coast descending into the sea, as well as access to a number of romantic secluded beaches and grottoes.
Described as one of the most beautiful cities on earth, Venice, built entirely on water, is unlike any place else in the world, a mesmerizing port of call on a luxury yacht charter along the Adriatic Sea. Truly unique, the city is an ancient maze of waterways, quaint narrow streets and walkways, built up on over 100 islets separated by canals and spanned by some 400 bridges. Walk back through time to experience the splendor of the Italian Renaissance with architectural icons like the Piazza San Marco and the Basilica and its awe-inspiring mosaics, and the Galleria dell’Accademia offering an immense collection of Venetian masterpieces to admire.
Venice and its Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a city with a month’s worth of museums and cultural attractions. The city has also become a major center of international conferences and festivals, when elegant event charter yachts host celebrity soirees and corporate functions at the dock. The Venice Biennale, held in odd years, is known world-wide for the International Art Exhibition, International Architecture Exhibition, Festival of Contemporary Music, Theatre Festival, Festival of Contemporary Dance and the prestigious Venice Film Festival, which takes place in late August or early September on the island of the Lido.
Coast of Tuscany – VIAREGGIO
A yacht charter along the coast of Tuscany offers beautiful beaches, historic seaports and intriguing shore excursions into a region known for breathtaking scenery and award-winning wines. Viareggio is the main center of the northern Tuscan Riviera known as Versilia. Several renowned charter yachts call Viareggio home.
The seaside resort town of Viareggio has been famous since the 18th century for shipbuilding, and is the birthplace of iconic Benetti yachts. There are interesting sites here year around, however the city is particularly amusing around Easter week for its spectacular papier-mâché floats paraded in the Carnival de Viareggio. There are also, theater and jazz festivals and a Puccini festival and museum.
A yacht charter itinerary along the coast of Tuscany should include Livorno if charter clients are interested in history, architecture, regional culture and politics. The port city was designed by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti at the end of the 16th century. The Venice district retains much of its original town planning and architectural features such as the bridges, narrow lanes, the noblemen’s estates, and a dense network of canals that once linked the port to its storehouses.
During the 18th and 19th centuries Livorno flourished. Neoclassical buildings, public parks, important museums and cultural institutions defined a cosmopolitan city noted by significant Greek and Jewish populations. Sadly, during WWII, Livorno was severely damaged and subsequent reconstruction gave the city a relatively modern look by Italian standards. Today Livorno is one of the poorer Italian cities and is also considered by some to be a stronghold for Leftist politics in Italy today.
Bolgheri is located a few miles inland from the Marina di Castagneto Carducci, one of several locations with facilities for docking a charter yacht on the Tuscan coast. Bolgheri became an internationally known region in the 1970s when a 1972 Sassicaia, produced by Tenuta San Guido, won in a tasting of 33 great clarets from 11 countries. Although this charming town is worth a visit in any season, every April it hosts an event to thrill connoissuers of food and wine.
During the event, wineries are open to the public for tours, tastings and seminars, to allow visitors to learn about these unique wines and the history of the acclaimed producers in the region. Gastronomic products are sampled at tastings and available as part of a traditional Sunday lunch served in the square at Castagneto Carducci. Plan to disembark your charter yacht for a truly Italian style afternoon.
In Bibbona, the Festa del Cedro (Lemon Festival) takes place on Easter Monday in the historic central square. A market sells local arts, crafts, and produce, and concerts and tastings take place in the afternoon. In the evening there is a parade and the annual Palio delle Botti competition, where barrels are pushed up narrow village streets.
Luxury yacht charter guests sailing between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, west of Tuscany, can savor crystal waters teaming with life, wild Mediterranean flowers on craggy cliffs and vast soft sand beaches that comprise the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. The marine park protects the seven islands of Gorgona, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio, Giannutri and their surrounding Mediterranean Sea environs.
Head off on your charter yacht for an early sail to Elba. Portoferreira is lined with beautiful little seaside restaurants, shops and galleries. The islands have a fascinating history, dating back to prehistoric times. Elba is most famous as the home of Napolean from 1814, who was much adored by the islanders for his efforts at improving the infrastructure and economy, and building appropriately marvelous villas and palaces. Volcanic origins have given the soaring Capanne mountain on Elba a height of more than 1000 meters. Visitors have plenty of opportunity for adventure along the steep slopes of the mountain, horseback riding, mountain biking and extreme sports such as free climbing.
Tourism is an important industry on the islands and beside the many opportunities for communing with nature and participating in sports activities, visitors will find bars, restaurants, shops, galleries, tourist villages, vineyards, hotels and night-clubs. For those who love nature history and culture, a visit to the Tuscan Archipelago will be rewarding. However, these protected areas will require megayacht charter guests to arrive by tender.
Choose from a luxurious megayacht , catamaran , or sailing yacht and live the dolce vita on your charter vacation in Italy, where you can experience a world of beauty filled with spectacular landscapes, rich cultures, and fascinating art and architecture.

Six people missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and one dead after tornado sinks luxury yacht off Sicily
R escuers were on Monday searching for six people – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch – who went missing after a luxury yacht was hit by a tornado and sank off the coast of Sicily, killing one of the 22 people on board.
The vessel was hit by the tornado at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard. The yacht was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello on the Mediterranean island.
Four Britons and two Americans are among those missing, the spokesperson said.
A source told CNN that Lynch, the founder of software giant Autonomy, was a passenger on the yacht. The source spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, and one child was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office. One body was found on the hull of the yacht, the Coast Guard said.
A small waterspout – one of several types of tornadoes – developed over the area Monday morning, according to a report from the European Severe Weather Database. Other strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 4 inches (100 mm) of rain in less than four hours in Brolo, east of Palermo.
The weather forecast had warned of potential strong winds, with storms across the entire southern region of Italy Sunday, the Coast Guard spokesperson added.
One survivor, Charlotte, 35, described how she battled to hold onto her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, reported Italian news agency ANSA, as a barrage of waves sank the yacht.
“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”
The captain is among the survivors, the spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard said.
The 56-meter yacht called the “Bayesian,” which flies under a British flag, had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan, the spokesperson told CNN. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told CNN two of its citizens were involved in the incident, but were not among those still missing. The nationality of the dead person has not been disclosed.
The Italian fire brigade said its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level, according to a press statement. The brigade also dispatched helicopters to bolster the search operation.
The captain of a nearby boat said he turned on his engine to avoid crashing into the Bayesian, Reuters reported, as fierce gales swept the area.
“This morning we got this strong gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” he told reporters on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”
The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the yacht, a source familiar with the operations told CNN. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not say when the team is expected to arrive in Sicily.
British tycoon among those missing
Lynch, the British entrepreneur missing from the yacht, had been plagued by legal woes since 2011 , when he sold his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion.
In June, he was acquitted of fraud by a jury in San Francisco, after prosecutors accused him of trying to inflate Autonomy’s revenue in the latest chapter of the legal saga.
He turned ground-breaking research at Cambridge University into the foundation of Autonomy, which became Britain’s biggest software company and a member of the blue-chip FTSE 100 index.
Lynch was lauded by academics and scientists and asked to advise the British government on technology and innovation.
Ownership records held by maritime information service Equasis show that the yacht is owned by the Isle of Man-registered Revtom Limited company. Revtom Limited’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as its owner.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
CNN’s Catherine Nicholls, Benjamin Brown and Eve Brennan contributed reporting.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily
15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 3:21 pm.
British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.
Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.
It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.
“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.
The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.
One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.
Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.
“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”
He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.
“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.
Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.
Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”
Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.
Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.
The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.
The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.
The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.
“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.
The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.
The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.
