Italy Yacht Charter Enquiry

Amanda, Jaco is a beautiful boat. Captain and crew is wonderful. The details of our trip were very similar to the itinerary you outlined with some minor modifications along the way. Our first night was in Ischia. We had dinner on the boat. We left early the next morning after breakfast for Capri. Capri was wonderful and tremendously fun. We hiked the Phoenician Stairs to Anacapri, hiked Mt. Solar, Villa Jovis and enjoyed the shipping now etc. dinner at Auroa one night. We spent two nights there. Upon departure, we had lunch at the lunch spot en route to Positano that you recommended. We spent one night in Positano and had dinner at a great hotel that MK can forward. We spent the night in Amalfi and had dinner on the boat. Next day we embarked for Sorrento. We spent two nights in Sorrento. Had dinner at Don Alfonso which is a truly special place. On our last Saturday we hit Pompeii, and mt. Vesuvius. Great day. We had the boat meet us back in Naples. – If a yacht cruises both in and outside EU waters, the VAT rate is only applied to the charter for the amount of time spent in Italian waters.

There are interesting sites here year around, however the city is particularly amusing around Easter week for its spectacular papier-mâché floats paraded in the Carnival de Viareggio. There are also, theater and jazz festivals and a Puccini festival and museum.

A yacht charter itinerary along the coast of Tuscany should include Livorno if charter clients are interested in history, architecture, regional culture and politics. The port city was designed by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti at the end of the 16th century. The Venice district retains much of its original town planning and architectural features such as the bridges, narrow lanes, the noblemen’s estates, and a dense network of canals that once linked the port to its storehouses.

During the 18th and 19th centuries Livorno flourished. Neoclassical buildings, public parks, important museums and cultural institutions defined a cosmopolitan city noted by significant Greek and Jewish populations. Sadly, during WWII, Livorno was severely damaged and subsequent reconstruction gave the city a relatively modern look by Italian standards. Today Livorno is one of the poorer Italian cities and is also considered by some to be a stronghold for Leftist politics in Italy today.

Bolgheri is located a few miles inland from the Marina di Castagneto Carducci, one of several locations with facilities for docking a charter yacht on the Tuscan coast. Bolgheri became an internationally known region in the 1970s when a 1972 Sassicaia, produced by Tenuta San Guido, won in a tasting of 33 great clarets from 11 countries. Although this charming town is worth a visit in any season, every April it hosts an event to thrill connoissuers of food and wine.

During the event, wineries are open to the public for tours, tastings and seminars, to allow visitors to learn about these unique wines and the history of the acclaimed producers in the region. Gastronomic products are sampled at tastings and available as part of a traditional Sunday lunch served in the square at Castagneto Carducci. In Bibbona, the Festa del Cedro (Lemon Festival) takes place on Easter Monday in the historic central square. A market sells local arts, crafts, and produce, and concerts and tastings take place in the afternoon. If you would like to spend a night in port, then be sure to make this clear to your crew or your charter broker well in advance, so that they can book it. It's advisable to spend a few nights of your charter docked in a marina, as there are plenty of restaurants and bars that are great for evening entertainment on the Amalfi Coast, and being docked in a marina will give you easy access to the town centre.  

The marinas that do exist along the Amalfi Coast typically cater to smaller yachts, so be sure to bear this mind. The following are the best marinas in the region, with a number that cater to larger yachts:

• Marina di Stabia , one of the most popular places to begin a yacht charter on the Amalfi Coast, located midway between Naples and Salerno on the north-western side of the Amalfi Coast, and boasts luxury facilities and the capacity to host yachts measuring up to 100m. It is conveniently situated just thirty minutes' drive from Naples airport.
• Marina Molo Louise is another favorite option for starting a yacht charter in Naples, and caters to yachts measuring up to 110m. It is located just over twenty minutes' away from the airport.
• Coppola Marina , located in the town of Amalfi, this marina has 90 berths with a maximum length of 35m.
• Marina Piccola,  situated in the beautiful port town of Sorrento, it has 280 berths which cater to yachts measuring up to 40m.
• Grassi Junior, offers 30 slips for yachts with a maximum length of 30m, located in the sought-after hotspot of Positano. 
• Capri Marina , another popular addition to an Amalfi Coast superyacht vacation, but the cost of a slip for one night is the highest in the Mediterranean, so be aware of this before you book in. There is a total of 300 berths, with a maximum length of 60m.
• Marina d'Arechi , popular marina in Salerno, which has 1,000 berths with a maximum capacity of 130m.

Slips are something that will add an extra cost to your yacht charter vacation, so it's important to be realistic about your budget and factor these expenses in before you book your charter.

With its A-lister appeal, rich cultural history and bevy of world-class restaurants, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean. The amalfi coast yacht charter itineraries.

To fully experience the charm of the Amalfi Coast on a yacht charter, you will need around seven days- however longer and shorter itineraries can also be arranged.

The region is reasonably small compared to other destinations in the Mediterranean, but a week will give you ample time to step on shore and explore all the beautiful towns and cities of the Amalfi Coast. Expect to encounter the beautiful gardens of Ravello, the lemon groves of Sorrento, the cathedral in Amalfi and the captivating town of Positano.

For longer itineraries along the Amalfi Coast, there are many small islands scattered off the coast that can be explored; from Capri and Ischia in the south to Ponza, Ventotene and Ponza in the north.

Most Amalfi Coast yacht charters begin in Naples, where there is an international airport and large port. However, charter guests can easily begin or end their yachting adventure elsewhere in the Mediterranean, and incorporate the Amalfi Coast into part of their overall yacht charter experience. Be aware that marinas in the Amalfi Coast are in high demand, so mooring costs can add up significantly and you will need to ensure you book a berth well in advance. The region can also be congested in peak season, and towns and villages can be touristy.

There is a wide variety of yachts for charter in the Amalfi Coast, so you can be sure to find an option that suits you and your budget.

Before you book, you should factor in additional costs that aren't covered in the base rate, such as berthing, fuel, VAT, food and drink and crew tips. 

Since it can be challenging to find sheltered bays and shallow water to drop anchor in, you will more than likely need to berth in a port for a night. Marinas along the Amalfi Coast are among the most expensive in the Mediterranean, so berthing costs can quickly add up.

Be aware that marinas in the Amalfi Coast are in high demand as well, so you will need to ensure you book a berth well in advance.

The prime time for an Amalfi Coast yacht charter is between June and September, when the weather is warm, rainfall is low and the wind is minimal.

The weather is pleasantly warm as early as May and later in October too, with the added bonus of fewer crowds.

Between August and September the sea temperature is higher; so later in the season is best to visit if you want to spend a lot of time in the water. 

Amalfi Coast yacht charters typically start in Naples, where there is an international airport. Naples is the best starting point if you'd like to explore all of what the Amalfi Coast has to easy access to Capri and Sorrento on the western side and Positano and Ravello on the eastern side. Naples makes a great starting point if you'd like to explore further afield as well, with the islands of Ischia and Ponza located nearby.

Amalfi Coast yacht charters can also start in Salerno, where there is a domestic airport that operates scheduled and chartered flights. Salerno is the best place to start if you have limited time and would like to see the sights of Amalfi, Ravello, Positano and Nerano, all of which are located on the eastern side of the Amalfi Coast.

Of course, it's also possible to take a car down the Amalfi Coast and board your yacht from anywhere you choose.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

THE boatbuilder behind Mike Lynch's ill-fated superyacht is seeking £186m from his widow and surviving crew after the tragic sinking.

Manufacturer Italian Sea Group (TISG) is alleging it has faced reputational damage after the superyacht sank off Sicily last month.

But a close friend of the Lynch family has fired back saying the company should be "ashamed" and its CEO is a "disgrace".

Billionaire businessman Lynch and his daughter Hannah died on board the doomed 56m yacht along with five others on August 19.

Lawyers for the manufacturer have now launched a civil claim to try and claw back losses they allege were caused by the sinking, La Nazione reported.

A close friend of the Lynch family fired back at the claim, lambasting TISG's CEO.

The claim directly calls into question the actions of Captain James Cutfield and other crew saying it was human error, not design issues, which led to the sinking.

It also reportedly names the yacht management company and its owner, which in turn is owned by Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

They say Cutfield underestimated weather conditions and did not anchor the boat in a safe place or prepare it to battle rough waves.

An expert report, they claim, will demonstrate the keel was not lowered and that the rear and side doors were left open.

The watertight doors that separate the dinghy garage from the engine room were also not closed.

TISG said it has lost business do to the sinking as it was in negotiations to sell three yachts which had already been completed.

It also claimed a "well-known European fashion house" suddenly became disinterested in building a line of boats and an investment fund had backed out of negotiations.

Media reports show TISG is partially owned by and has been collaborating on yachts with Giorgio Armani.

The Bayesian sinking also saw the prospective buyers walk away causing a loss of earnings, they allege.

Within hours of the sinking, before all of the bodies were recovered, TISG’s chief executive, Giovanni Costantino, publicly blamed the crew saying the boat was “unsinkable”.

He told a local newspaper: “Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors.

“The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor.”

Bizarrely, TISG told media its lawyer had not been "authorised" to pursue the claim in court and they had been instructed to remove it.

The company said: “The Italian Sea Group … strongly denies the claims published in La Nazione regarding a legal action following the Bayesian tragedy.

"Although TISG has given a generic mandate to the lawyers named in the article, no legal representative of the company has examined, signed or authorised any writ of summons.”

The captain of the doomed Bayesian,  James Cutfield, 51, is being investigated for manslaughter .

Prosecutors are also probing ship engineer  Tim Parker-Eaton, from Clophill, Beds, and sailor Matthew Griffith, 22  under the same charges.

The yacht was sunk by a freak "Black Swan" waterspout which would have appeared without warning, maritime experts believe.

The yacht's 264ft tall mast was hammered by a water tornado as storms battered the Porticello Harbour causing it to sink within minutes.

They hope data from them will be able to shed light on why the Bayesian sank, but there are worries they will to too waterlogged to retrieve it.

The 184 ft Bayesian was carrying 22 people when it sank within minutes of being hit by a downburst - a strong, localised wind - while anchored in Porticello near Palermo.

The  luxury  vessel was caught up in a tornado which caused it to sink in the early hours of the morning.

Fifteen of those on board were rescued on a life raft, while the yacht’s cook Recaldo Thomas was discovered dead in the water shortly afterwards.

Specialist divers recovered the bodies of billionaire Lynch, 59, and four of his guests, from the first cabin on the left.

Officials said the victims had scrambled to reach air pockets in the yacht, which sank 164ft stern-first before rolling onto its right side on the seabed. 

Investigators are understood to be rifling through CCTV footage and photographs taken by locals on the night of the storm to understand why the boat sank so quickly. 

Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the victims would have been asleep when a tornado-like waterspout struck the boat, leaving them unable to escape.

Lynch had just won a court case over the sale of Autonomy to tech giant HP after being accused of fraudulently raising the price.

The 59-year-old had been living under house arrest in San Francisco, US, with just his beloved dog Faucet for company, for well over a year.

He was finally acquitted just months ago and spoke about longing to spend time with his wife, Angela Bacares and their two daughters.

In 1996, he started software company Autonomy, which would be used to analyse huge swathes of data from unstructured sources like phone calls, emails and videos.

Describing his small team he said: “Eccentric people working really hard on a project. No bureaucracy. No admin. Lots of late nights, lots of eating cold pizza”.

Inside The Bayesian's final 16 minutes

Data recovered from the Bayesian's Automatic Identification System (AIS) breaks down  exactly how it sank  in a painful minute-by-minute timeline.

At 3.50am on Monday August 19 the Bayesian began to shake "dangerously" during a fierce storm, Italian outlet  Corriere  revealed.

Just minutes later at 3.59am the boat's anchor gave way, with a source saying the data showed there was "no anchor left to hold".

After the ferocious weather ripped away the boat's mooring it was dragged some 358 metres through the water.

By 4am it had began to take on water and was plunged into a blackout, indicating that the waves had reached its generator or even engine room.

At 4.05am the  Bayesian fully disappeared  underneath the waves.

An emergency GPS signal was finally emitted at 4.06am to the coastguard station in Bari, a city nearby, alerting them that the vessel had sunk.

Early reports suggested the disaster struck around 5am local time off the coast of Porticello Harbour in Palermo, Sicily.

The new data pulled from the boat's AIS appears to suggest it happened an hour earlier at around 4am.

Some 15 of the 22 onboard were rescued, 11 of them scrambling onto an inflatable life raft that sprung up on the deck.

A smaller nearby boat - named Sir Robert Baden Powell - then helped take those people to shore.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"
