Dining out in Porto Rafael
(and managing your personal chef's stress)
Dining out in Porto Rafael is a pleasant alternative to staying at home, from where it's really hard to move. Some addresses, however, are good for giving your private chef a day off, as long as he doesn't take it personally. Private chefs in Porto Rafael end up becoming family members, as well as a pragmatic solution that frees you from household chores. The private dimension is so intimate that private chefs anticipate your tastes and desires. They mix ingredients taken by traditional cuisine with typical flavors, adding a personal touch which is their special signature. There are those stealing spices from overseas cuisine for a spicy shrimp curry with turmeric pilaf rice; those proposing malloreddus alla Campidanese with sliced of bread alongside for cleaning the pot ; chefs specialized in fish recipes, with cherry tomatoes, olives and bay leaves; some others inspired by nature, adding at dishes an olive branch, a stone, a flower, only for the pleasure of your eyes.
In the village we point out Yacht Club, a suggestive niche of sea with boats around sweetly moved by the wind, where Ottavio and his daughters serve appetizers and the freshest fish. Note also Rafael Cafè inn, where once was Rafael's historic casita, still with its famous motto outside, which has become Porto Rafael's inspiration. Delicious appetizers in front of the bay, and dinners.
Few steps after you meet Solaz , a wine bar with a sophisticated list, a lively meeting point for those who like to drink well and spend good time observing comings and goings around in the square. Going up at Santa Rita church, stop at historic Harry's Bar , atmosphere between past and future recreated by owners Aldo and Diego. Furnishing and colors inspired by vintage pictures , to feel Porto Rafael original style. Excellent raw materials, from breakfast until after dinner. Gastronomic dream continues in Palau, where La Gritta restaurant offers the best of traditional cuisine, simple and refined. In a location of extreme charm, Simona and Roberto, afford also to serve garlic and oil linguine, or timeless tomato sauce spaghetti, a provocation that alone deserves a booking. Aglio e Olio and C’era una volta restaurants are a good solution for tasting genuine flavors and hospitality. At the port, a happy example of innovative cooking: O ’Belau , a name that in Indonesian means island, which seems also the exotic declination of Palau. It is still the only mediterranean restaurant and sushi bar in town, traditional cuisine with oriental influences, first choice products. For eating pieds dans l'eau in a simple and unpretentious way, move to Porto Pollo, at Ristorantino , while one of the best pizzas near is at Maestrale , where dining in front of sunset. Stop for tasting local wines and appetizers at Cantina Surrau , in Chilvagghja area.
The traditional roast suckling pig at La Ciminea , Lu Ciaccaru area, and even at Agriturismo La Colti , Canniggione area, where guests are welcomed by a battery of crispy and hot suckling pigs on a spit with small side dishes.

Apre Rafael, il nuovo ristorante glam nella piazzetta del borgo di Porto Rafael
Rafael, fresco concept in piazzetta
Protagonisti: paella e champagne sangria

Gourmet restaurant in Porto Rafael
At SOLAZ Gourmet Restaurant in Porto Rafael conviviality is the concept everything is based on.
The restaurant is located in the famous main square in this seaside village that keeps the search for continuous socialising alive ; just as the Spanish Count Rafael envisaged when he first uttered his motto more than sixty years ago.
Gourmet taste
The Gourmet is a small restaurant in Porto Rafael that has big ambitions.
From the catch of the day to local meats and a wine list with more than 400 labels including wines and champagne to satisfy even the most demanding palates.
These delicacies , are expertly prepared with extreme care in terms of the quality of the food and professionalism and with a gourmet philosophy , without underestimating the importance of the visual impact.
That is how the gourmet philosophy was born, as told in the first person by the Chef: ‘During my childhood, I always searched for those flavours and aromas in every product with which I came into contact that could be a source of inspiration for me. The imprint I leave on the dishes I create is given precisely by these wonderful memories, which have taught me to enhance every ingredient that makes up each of my dishes.
For me it is very important to express and link the concept of gourmet to uniqueness , which in turn is linked to the location: unique and breathtaking .’
And this is where the restaurant gets its name from.
The sophisticated menu provides a selection of flavours for all tastes , even for those who follow a vegetarian diet . All ingredients are extremely fresh and 0 km and are all locally sourced.
You can sample fish or meat specialities, fresh homemade pasta, seasonal vegetables and much more. Our sommelier can suggest wines to accompany every dish.

A historical period in which the carefree and worldly lifestyle of that period where the will to live and enjoy life were some of the most important things.
Treat yourself to the pleasure of taking a dip into the past and sample the authentic flavours of our restaurant in Porto Rafael.
Porto Rafael is not only an expression of a queen nature of the territory but also a stage of a journey where places of rare beauty show themselves and make themselves known.
History has preserved this heritage for us and we hope so forever.
The Piazzetta Rafael de Neville
It is the history of the culture of Porto Rafael, where the sweet life of the 60s has traced the custom of meeting each year to tell each other moments, projects, emotions of one’s life.
In a romantic and at the same time joyful atmosphere, both musical and cultural events were the protagonists of an engaging and highly participatory way of being together. Events that have been an expression of joy and participation and at the same time have been the setting for parties that have become legends.
The personality of Count Rafael has signed the story, a story that tells a long and unforgettable fairy tale of love.
The fortress of Monte Altura
It was built in 1887/89 to defend the coast and the archipelago of La Maddalena; it is considered the most beautiful fortress in Europe.
A highly strategic point at that time for the defense of the Tyrrhenian Sea from French naval military actions.
Punta Sardegna lighthouse
A cage that science calls “Faraday cage” envelops the entire building; its architectural values enhance the beauty that stands out on the rocks and its extraordinary panoramic position increases its charm.
Since 1913, the year in which it was built by the Civil Engineer, several specialists called “fanalists”, who manage the lighthouse, have followed one another with their families. From this we can understand the presence of cast iron downpipes for the collection and disposal of rainwater.
In 1975 the Italian Navy automated the reporting systems. Today the lighthouse is home to the Coastal Observatory.
The little port of Punta Stroppello
In a unique position opens the little Port of Punta Stroppello which houses boats of great prestige from all over the world.
A corner of paradise that houses the Yacht Club of Punta Sardegna and from where you can attend international level regattas such as the Mario Formenton Trophy, a historic event for those who love sailing.
It is organized in August every two years in memory of Mario Formenton who was President of Mondadori.
The route is one of the most suggestive and has the islands of the archipelago as its backdrop. It starts from Porto Rafael sailing between Budelli and Spargi and then returns to Porto Rafael. A path of about 20 miles.
The lookout
A construction that dates back to the 19th century. A military post that was to serve strategically for sightings. Today it sees the presence of many who love to admire a panorama to say the least spectacular that embraces La Maddalena, Cala di Trana, always capable of a suggestive emotion, Corsica, the Bocche di Bonifacio among the typical colors of the sea and rocks.
The very small church of Santa Rita deserves special consideration. Count Rafael promised to build it if he could make his dream come true. The name could only be that of Santa Rita, patroness of the impossible. And so it was! … a chapel of rare beauty, an intimate place of prayers.
The floor that looks like a checkerboard, the altar covered with rosaries, the colors that accompany the atmosphere enhance the emotions that are experienced in this place.
The church of Porto Rafael is also a destination on a path that brings great emotion and reflection to the faithful who participate in it.
The procession with torchlight procession from the small church of Santa Rita to the Parish Church of Palau is an anniversary that every year, in May, renews the intimacy of prayer.
Another moment of intense participation in the values of worship is the procession at sea, at the end of the summer, in honor of the Madonna del mare and San Mauro. A procession of naval units accompanies the celebration in the waters in front of the port of Palau and Porto Rafael.
Tennis and sailing… moments in which sport is combined with experiencing the beauty of this area. A green tennis court that excites, near the sea, among granite rocks that cut out representations as if they were sculptures; Illuminated in the evening for an unimaginable setting.
A few steps away is the sailing center of Porto Pollo, a destination for sailors and windsurfers. A naturalistic paradise caressed by the wind that tells its beauty. Wind surf, surf, sup, kite-surf and sailing manage the emotions that the sea transmits to us.
The excursions
These are opportunities to learn about history! In Arzachena, near Porto Rafael, there is the Tomba dei Giganti by Coddu Vecchiu.
The Tombs of the Giants are tombs formed by a funeral chamber intended for collective burials dating back to the Nuragic age. A testimony of the life of that moment.
The Tomb of Coddu Vecchiu is an important funerary monument of the village of the time. Built in three phases, one of which dates back to 1600/1400 BC. C. is surrounded by a nature that makes you breathe infinite magic.
Another thrilling excursion is a visit to the geomarine park in La Maddalena. A magic that has no end for the beauty that is all around those who observe it. Budelli, Razzoli, Santa Maria, Santo Stefano, Caprera, Sprinkle pearls of an archipelago that remains in your heart: everything draws an unforgettable scenario.
Among all the islands we remember Caprera, rich in a history that must be lived and not told. Garibaldi’s house is history that must be lived, the village of Stagnali is nature that must be admired.
At the mineralogical museum of Stagnali fossils, gems and rocks are splendid protagonists who recite a memory that is lost in time.
All this has its own stage which is the Archipelago of La Maddalena. A story that must be told: 230 years of social life; its islands which are a collection of splendid treasures covered and guarded by a sea that almost expresses a protective embrace.
The archipelago should be remembered not only for its beauty but also for its history told by pages featuring Napoleon, Nelson, Garibaldi as witnesses to the strategic military value of this area.
In 1777 it was an important support for the ships of the Sardinian Royal Palace. Over the years there has been an increasingly significant military positioning. Just look at the many fortifications present and built in particular between the first and second world wars, such as on the island of Spargi, on the island of Caprera and on the island of La Maddalena.
Porto Rafael overlooks this wonderful panorama, located just a stone’s throw away.
A testimony of great historical importance is, then, the ship sunk in the waters of Spargi between 120 and 110 BC.
The National Park, then, is a place of great interest for the presence of over 700 plant species and is an unforgettable memory.
It is an area of immense historical value where a Tomb, Nuraghi, a Village and Tafoni are the absolute protagonists of this scenario.
The Tomb, of which only the foundations remain, dates back to the 14th century BC.
The Village dates back to the Nuragic age with its huts built in masonry and with covers of plants and shrubs.
The Tafoni, then, are large natural holes in the rocks used at the time as refuges or tombs.
Why tell this?
Because Porto Rafael is not only “Dreaming is Living”, it is not only a “Paradise of Nature”, it is not only the “Charm that Excites” but it is also the opportunity to deepen a culture that is millennial history, the opportunity to live a scenario that makes you seem that everything belongs only to you …
But it is not so because everything belongs to the whole of humanity!

Yacht club porto rotondo, a history of passion and sea since 1985.
The Yacht Club Porto Rotondo was founded in 1985 by a group of people who were passionate about the sea and about Porto Rotondo, and it has always been located in the beautiful larch-wood building created by the Venetian architect Malgaretto.
In 1987, while maintaining a certain autonomy, it was incorporated as a "detached" base by the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, presided over by the Aga Khan. In these years the active collaboration with "the parent company" of Porto Cervo was established with the lively exchange of influential members, the intense international sporting activity and the prestigious assemblies of classic boats, which came to an end after 10 years.
The Club set out along a new course with a group loyal to the glorious "flag" under the guidance of Admiral Luciano Fontana with a dynamic Board of Directors who were confident about the ability of the club to implement important initiatives and enhance the great resources of Porto Rotondo in an international context.
The Yacht Club Porto Rotondo has prestigious members from Italy and abroad, the benefit of twinning with important sports clubs, and attracts sponsorship from renowned international brands, thanks to which it can deploy an activity rich in social and sporting events.

What to Know About Ukraine’s Cross-Border Assault Into Russia
The incursion caught Russia by surprise and signified a shift in tactics for Kyiv after more than two years of war with Russia.
- Share full article
By Andrew E. Kramer Constant Méheut Kim Barker Anton Troianovski and Cassandra Vinograd
Ukraine pressed ahead with its offensive inside Russian territory on Sunday , pushing toward more villages and towns nearly two weeks into the first significant foreign incursion in Russia since World War II.
But even as the Ukrainian army was advancing in Russia’s western Kursk region, its troops were steadily losing ground on their own territory. The Russian military is now about eight miles from the town of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, according to open-source battlefield maps . The capture of Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian stronghold, would bring Moscow one step closer to its long-held goal of capturing the entire Donetsk region.
That underscored the gamble Ukraine’s army took when it crossed into Russia: throwing its forces into a daring offensive that risked weakening its own positions on the eastern front.
Whether that strategy will prove advantageous remains to be seen, analysts say.
On the political front, the offensive has already had some success: Ukraine’s rapid advance has embarrassed the Kremlin and has altered the narrative of a war in which Kyiv’s forces had been on the back foot for months.
Here’s what to know about Ukraine’s cross-border operation, which President Biden said last week was creating a “real dilemma” for the Russian government.
What happened?
Ukrainian troops and armored vehicles stormed into the Kursk region of western Russia on Aug. 6 , swiftly pushing through Russian defenses and capturing several villages.

The assault, prepared in the utmost secrecy , opened a new front in the 30-month war and caught not only Russia off guard: Some Ukrainian soldiers and U.S. officials also said they lacked advance notice.
Analysts and Western officials estimate that Ukraine deployed about 1,000 troops at the start of the incursion. But military analysts say that it has since poured more troops into the operation to try to hold and expand its positions.
How far into Russia have Ukrainian troops advanced?
Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine’s top commander, said last week that his army now controlled more than 80 Russian settlements in the Kursk region, including Sudzha , a town of 6,000 residents. His claims could not be independently verified, although analysts say that Sudzha is highly likely to be under full Ukrainian control.
Ukraine’s advance in the Kursk region has slowed in recent days, according to open-source maps of the battlefield based on combat footage and satellite images, as Russia sends in more reinforcements. The Ukrainian army appears to be trying to dig in along the border area rather than pushing deeper into Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine acknowledged that on Saturday, saying : “Now we are reinforcing our positions. The foothold of our presence is getting stronger.”
Why is this significant?
Kyiv has regularly bombarded Russian oil refineries and airfields with drones since Moscow’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. It has also helped stage two other ground attacks in Russia. Those, however, were smaller forays by Russian exile groups backed by the Ukrainian army, and they ended in quick retreats.
Until two weeks ago, Ukrainian forces had not counterattacked in Russia. The gains in Kursk are the quickest for Ukrainian forces since they reclaimed the Kherson region of their own country in November 2022.
How has the Kremlin responded?
As Ukrainian forces pushed deeper into Russia, Moscow scrambled to shore up its defenses, and President Vladimir V. Putin convened his security services to coordinate a response. The Russian military said it was sending more troops and armored vehicles to try to repel the attack, with Russian television broadcasting images of columns of military trucks.
Military analysts and U.S. officials have said the Russian command had so far brought in reinforcements mainly from within Russia so as to not deplete its units on the Ukrainian battlefield, in what they described as a disorganized effort.
“Russia is still pulling together its reaction,” Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, NATO’s top military commander, said last week during a talk at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He described the Russian response as having been “fairly slow and scattered” as the authorities sorted out which military and security forces should take the lead.
And what about Putin?
The incursion has embarrassed Mr. Putin and his military establishment, prompting questions about Russia’s level of preparedness .
Underscoring how the attack rattled the Kremlin, Mr. Putin lashed out last week at the West in a tense televised meeting with his top officials. “The West is fighting us with the hands of the Ukrainians,” he said, repeating his frequent depiction of the war, which he started, as a proxy campaign against Russia by the West.
Ukraine’s incursion has brought the war into Russia like it never has before, and tens of thousands of civilians have evacuated the border area.
What is the goal of Ukraine’s incursion?
Analysts say that Ukraine’s offensive has two main aims : to draw Russian forces from the front lines in eastern Ukraine and to seize territory that could serve as a bargaining chip in future peace talks.
Mykhailo Podolyak, a top Ukrainian presidential adviser, said last week that Russia would be forced to the negotiating table only through suffering “significant tactical defeats.”
“In the Kursk region, we can clearly see how the military tool is being used objectively to persuade” Russia to enter “a fair negotiation process,” he wrote on social media .
The operation has offered a much-needed morale boost for Ukrainians, whose forces have been losing ground to Russian troops for months.
But military analysts have questioned whether Kyiv’s cross-border assault is worth the risk, given that Ukrainian forces are already stretched on the front lines of their own country.
How is it affecting the fight inside Ukraine?
Russian forces have been pummeling Ukrainian troops in the east even as Moscow races to respond to the incursion into Kursk , according to analysts, Western officials and Ukrainian soldiers.
Russia has begun to withdraw small numbers of troops from Ukraine, they said, to try to help repel the Ukrainians, but not enough to significantly affect the overall battlefield for now.
Senior American officials have said privately that they understood Kyiv’s need to change the narrative of the war, but that they were skeptical that Ukraine could hold the territory long enough to force Russia to divert significant resources from the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine.
While Kyiv’s allies have in the past been wary that Ukrainian incursions in Russia could escalate the war, the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell Fontelles, said last week that Ukraine had the bloc’s “ full support .”
Ukraine has used some Western-supplied weapons in the Kursk operation. But so far, the United States and Britain, two of Kyiv’s closes allies, have said the incursion did not violate their policies.”
What happens next?
As the Ukrainian offensive approaches its two-week mark, analysts say that Kyiv has several options, each with its own challenges.
Ukrainian forces could try to keep pushing farther into Russia, but that will become harder as Russian reinforcements arrive and Ukraine’s supply lines are stretched.
They could keep digging into the territory they now hold and try to defend it, but that could expose fixed Ukrainian positions to potentially devastating Russian airstrikes.
Or, battered by continual losses in eastern Ukraine, they could decide that they have made their point and pull back.
Thibault Fouillet, the deputy director of the Institute for Strategic and Defense Studies, a French research center, said Ukraine’s next move would depend on how Russia responds. “The coming week will be decisive,” he said.
