Take a closer look at Russian oligarch's $700 million superyacht that is one of the largest in the world

  • Roman Abramovich had seemingly scrambled to avoid sanctions from the UK by moving his superyachts.
  • One of those is The Eclipse, which cost $700 million to build and was once the biggest in the world.
  • That yacht was once in New York City and we took some photos.

Insider Today

Like other Russian oligarchs, Roman Abramovich had seemingly scrambled to avoid sanctions and that included quickly moving his superyachts to more friendly waters.

Many of the 55-year-old billionaire's assets — such as the Chelsea Football Club and several homes — have been sold or frozen since Russia launched an unprovoked war on Ukraine, Bloomberg reported .

While Abramovich couldn't move the Premier League football club Chelsea FC and sold the $3 billion club , his yachts are another matter.

Abramovich's 553-foot-long flagship is The Eclipse, estimated to have cost $700 million when built. After sanctions were initially dropped by the UK against Abramovich, his second "smaller" $600 million superyacht, Solaris, left Barcelona, Spain, and moved to friendlier waters in Turkey.

Solaris was joined in Turkey by The Eclipse, which arrived from the Caribbean .

While the superyacht Eclipse was photographed in Turkish waters in early August , it was once docked at Manhattan's Pier 90, and Robert Johnson was able to get some pictures. Take a tour of the superyacht below.

Robert Johnson contributed to this post.

Just south of this public parking lot on the roof of the Pier 90 terminal in New York City sat Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's flagship yacht, the "Eclipse."

roman yacht

536-feet long and styled after military vessels.

roman yacht

The 2010 Eclipse cost $700 million and was the world's largest yacht when built.

roman yacht

The vessel has amenities to rival any ship on the sea — like its own mini submersible, perhaps similar to this— able to dive down 150-feet.

roman yacht

The Eclipse has two helipads.

roman yacht

Bulletproof glass and armor plates wrap the length of Roman's master suite and the bridge.

roman yacht

And a German-built missile defense system.

roman yacht

The ship's also supposed to have a laser defense against paparazzi trying to photograph the yacht's guests, but saw no evidence of the device when we were there.

roman yacht

The Eclipse has three launch boats.

roman yacht

That looked to be stocked with medical supplies and a variety of handheld radios.

roman yacht

From the cruise ship parking lot it felt like we were almost on the Eclipse itself.

roman yacht

But with little chance we'd be invited aboard through the ship's door here ...

roman yacht

... We hoped to find one of the 70 crew members required to sail the Eclipse and see if they'd tell us what ship life was like.

roman yacht

But we found no one interested in talking.

roman yacht

But we certainly didn't feel like paparazzi, or that we'd be lasered, when we were in the parking lot tourists use when they arrive to board their cruise.

roman yacht

From up here, the ship was simply stunning and the amount of work required to keep her that way apparent.

roman yacht

The Yacht Report says owning a superyacht costs about 20% of the ship's initial value every year.

roman yacht

But experts believe that Roman probably pays $75 million a year to run the private cruise ship with 24-guest suites.

roman yacht

Looking at the layout of the ship gets us talking about the two swimming pools inside, the disco, cinema, hair salon, and restaurant.

roman yacht

The billionaire's guests would use this door to enter any fore part of the deck.

roman yacht

Perhaps noting where the life rings were as they made their way about the ship.

roman yacht

At 13,000 gross tons, the Eclipse was, at the time, the largest vessel to use a special stabilization system to keep it calm in rough waters while anchored or moving slowly through the sea.

roman yacht

Roman faced a $150,000 tab for parking the Eclipse in New York City while possibly visiting his daughter and her new baby — about $2,000 a day.

roman yacht

A large yacht like the Eclipse can hold over 100,000 gallons of fuel.

roman yacht

Depending on the current price of fuel, a five-hour cruise each way could cost about $30,000.

roman yacht

None of those numbers are likely to concern Roman Abramovich, however, who has an estimated net worth of nearly $8 billion.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich owns or is linked to a collection of five yachts estimated to be worth almost $1bn, including several vessels whose ownership remained secret until this week.

A Financial Times investigation into the billionaire’s assets has lifted the veil of secrecy he maintains over his wealth, even after the UK and EU imposed sanctions on him following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for his allegedly close relationship with President Vladimir Putin.

Authorities in the UK and EU are attempting to identify all of the assets owned by sanctioned oligarchs. Abramovich was already widely reported to be the owner of Solaris and Eclipse — worth $474mn and $437mn, respectively, according to yacht data service VesselsValue. But the FT revealed this week that he also owns Halo and Garçon, which are both moored in Antigua.

The Antiguan government was unaware of the ownership of the boats docked on the island before inquiries from the FT, highlighting the scale of the challenge UK and EU authorities face in enforcing sanctions.

Tom Keatinge, director of the Centre for Financial Crime and Security Studies at the Royal United Services Institute think-tank said governments, banks and other institutions trying to enforce sanctions had to navigate a world where “ownership trails run cold and morph into a haze of front companies, nominees and cut-outs”.

The yacht Amore Vero after being impounded by French authorities in La Ciotat, France.

Halo and Garçon are valued at $38mn and $20mn, respectively, and are now at risk of being seized.

In a letter to the British high commissioner to Barbados regarding the yachts, Antiguan minister of foreign affairs Paul Chet Greene said the island would “provide full assistance to the government of the United Kingdom” if it receives a request under the two nations’ Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.

The letter noted that Antigua had requested information on the company that owns the two boats — British Virgin Islands-registered Wenham Overseas Limited — after “persistent allegations by the Financial Times that the vessels could be owned by Mr Roman Abramovich”.

In response, the British high commission provided Antiguan authorities with a letter, seen by the FT, “from the Financial Investigation Agency of the British Virgin Islands which states the beneficial owner of Wenham Overseas Ltd is Roman Abramovich”.

The letter also shows the billionaire’s address in Switzerland is listed simply as “Immeuble, Gatzby Le Magnifique”, which translates as “The Great Gatsby Building”.

Keatinge described the UK’s ability to demand full ownership information of companies registered in any of its overseas territories or crown dependencies as its “most powerful global weapon” in combating financial secrecy.

However, he asked: “How much is that weapon being used?”

UK transport secretary Grant Shapps with the impounded Russian-owned yacht Phi in Canary Wharf, east London.

A person with knowledge of Abramovich’s boat collection and documents seen by the FT indicate that the oligarch may also still be the owner of Sussurro, the first yacht he bought in 1998, despite reports he had given it to an ex-wife in a divorce.

The person who correctly identified the two yachts in Antigua as belonging to Abramovich told the FT the oligarch still owned Sussurro.

The vessel’s owner is listed in maritime registers as Vesuvius International Limited in the British Virgin Islands. BVI documents show this company was deregistered there in 2017. Another Vesuvius International was registered in Jersey the same year.

The owner of Jersey-based Vesuvius International is listed as Wotton Overseas Holdings Limited. This entity — which shifted from the BVI to Jersey in 2017 — is also the owner through a subsidiary of a helicopter that has been photographed landing on Abramovich’s Solaris several times.

Maritime tracking services show Sussurro, which means “whisper” in Italian and is valued at $11mn, is moored in La Ciotat in the south of France — the same port where the French government last month seized a $116mn superyacht belonging to a company tied to Igor Sechin, head of Russian oil group Rosneft.

Sussurro’s management company is Blue Ocean Management, a Cyprus-based company that also manages Le Grand Bleu, a 113-metre superyacht that Abramovich reportedly gave to his business associate Eugene Shvidler.

The UK placed Shvidler under sanctions last week.

The letter from the BVI’s financial investigation agency to its British counterparts also reveals that the owner of Le Grand Blue — Ashchurch Holdings Limited — is owned by “Zarui Shvidler”. Shvidler’s wife is commonly known as Zara Shvidler.

VesselsValue pegged Le Grand Bleu’s market value in a range of $110mn-$130mn, noting that the boat had last been tracked this week in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Puerto Rico.

Representatives for Abramovich and Shvidler did not respond to requests for comment.

ECLIPSE Yacht – Epic $600M Superyacht

The ECLIPSE yacht was once the largest yacht in the world at an impressive length of 162.5 metres (533 ft) but currently ranks in second place after AZZAM.

Though she is known as the billion-dollar yacht, it is estimated that her true value lies between US $500 – $700 million.

The vessel can host 36 guests and is even rumored to feature a state-of-the-art anti-paparazzi system to protect the privacy of those on board.

ECLIPSE yacht interior

The interior (and the exterior) was designed by Terence Disdale , who has become one of the top names in the industry despite having no formal design education.

ECLIPSE was his largest project to date, and he also worked on prominent vessels such as A+ and AL SALAMAH. The interior of ECLIPSE is classically designed in a style that is to be expected from one of the largest yachts in the world.

The upholstery and furniture follow a beige and crème color palette with wooden accents.

The yacht’s 18 cabins can welcome 36 guests as well as 70 crew members, which is an unusually large number even for a vessel of this size.

A large dance floor, several fireplaces, two swimming pools, and two helipads are also included onboard.

The ECLIPSE yacht interior is so large that there is even a cinema dedicated exclusively to crew members. In 2015 the interior of ECLIPSE was refitted by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg.

Specifications

The ECLIPSE yacht is the second-largest yacht in the world with a length of 162.5 meters (533 ft), a beam of 22 meters (72.2 ft), and a draft of 5.9 meters (19.4 ft).

She was built by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss and delivered to her owner in 2010.

Four MTU engines power ECLIPSE and allow her to reach top speeds of 25 knots, although her average cruising speed lies at 22 knots.

Her total volume lies at 13564 tons making her not only one of the longest but also the heaviest yachts in the world.

Like the interior of ECLIPSE, the interior was designed by Terence Disdale. According to rumors, Abramovich fitted her with an anti-paparazzi system that detects electronic light sensors from digital cameras.

However, there is no proof of this, although many newspapers report its existence.

On deck are several swimming pools and jacuzzis, and the aft of the vessel features a sizeable beach club. The yacht has a sleek design that attests to Terence Disdale’s classical style.

ECLIPSE came to fame as being the most expensive yacht ever built at the time for an approximate price of US $500 million.

She has seen further improvements since her purchase by Abramovich in 2010 and it is often widely reported that she is worth US $1.2 – $1.5 billion.

Mike Lynch's superyacht sailed across Europe before doomed final stop

  • Mike Lynch's superyacht sailed across Europe on its way to Sicily
  • It passed France, the UK, Morocco and Algeria while travelling to the Med
  • It sunk early on Monday following a tornado near Porticello

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's award-winning luxury superyacht roamed around Europe's warm waters for days on its way to her doomed final stop in Sicily.

The £30million Bayesian, formerly known as the Salute, was being sailed in celebration of the 59-year-old recent acquittal of criminal fraud charges in the US.

He had invited his family, along with his legal team and guests from his venture capital firm Invoke, to join him on the yacht to toast to his 'second life' after almost a year under house arrest.

The yacht had sailed from Rotterdam, in the Netherlands , making its way past several European countries including Belgium, France , the UK, Spain and Portugal before passing through the Strait of Gibraltar last week, according to Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera .

Passing by Morocco's most northern major city, Tangiers, as it went from the north Atlantic to the Alboran Sea, the Bayesian, a 56m long vessel built in Viareggio, Tuscany, by luxury shipmaker Perini Navi in 2008, then passed Algeria, Tunisia and the Italian island of Sardiania before heading towards Sicily.

The last port it docked in before it sank on Monday was in Milazzo, on the east of the island of Sicily.

The Bayesian reached Milazzo, often used as a hub for travelling to the idyllic Aeolian Islands, the day before Ferragosto, a public holiday on August 15 with roots in the Roman Empire.

Ferragosto, established by the Roman emperor Augustus in 18 BC, celebrates the end of weeks of what would've been arduous work in fields. Italians typically do not work, an instead head to the beach to cool off in the height of summer.

During this period of national rest, the Bayesian sat in port waiting to be refuelled and restocked.

The vessel then meandered down Sicily's northern coast, inching closer and closer to its final destination of Porticello.

The yacht sank as a fierce storm battered the area overnight on Sunday.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, 57, who was among the rescued recalls the boat suddenly 'tilted' at around 4am, before glass began shattering.

The superyacht had been lit up and illuminating the night sky when a waterspout - a whirling column of air and water mist - unfolded nearby.

Witnesses have described the moment the yacht went down as very sudden, claiming it was as if it just 'disappeared'.

'The boat was all lit up. Around 4.30am, it was no longer there,' said one.

'A normal joyous vacation day at sea turned into tragedy'.

Fisherman Pietro Asciutto said: 'I was at home when the waterspout hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly'.

The Italian Coastguard said in a statement that a nearby boat offered assistance to people before emergency services arrived.

The Sir Robert BP, a Dutch sailing ship which had been anchored by the Bayesian, is believed to have rescued the 15 survivors.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the boat, described how his vessel was battered by strong gusts, with his team working to stabilise it and manoeuvre it to avoid hitting the Bayesian nearby.

Borner told the BBC: 'After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.'

Fisherman Fabio Cefalù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4.30am and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

'But for the rest, we didn't find anyone,' he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on-site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. 'I think they are inside, all the missing people.'

Mr Lynch is among six people missing.

His wife tragically revealed on Monday that not just her husband was missing after the yacht sank, but also their 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Hannah completed her A-levels this summer and had secured a place to study English Literature at Oxford University, according to the Times.

Two more passengers on board the Bayesian who are still missing are the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Mr Bloomer is a close friend of Mr Lynch and was confirmed missing by Italian Authorities alongside his wife.

According to his Linkedin profile, Mr Bloomer is the chairman of insurance provider Hiscox and was formerly the chief executive of Prudential before being ousted in a boardroom coup in 2005.

The other two yet to be found are Mr Lynch's attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife Nada.

Attorney Gary Lincenberg said Morvillo and his wife 'are presumed to be passed away' after the yacht went down near Sicily.

Mr Lincenberg told Business Insider that 'Chris and his wife are gone'.

Tragically, the body of a man was found floating alongside the sunken vessel on Monday.

Authorities identified the man as Canadian Ricardo Thomas, who was working as the boat's chef and was the only crew member unaccounted for.

His body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 163 feet off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said.

Suspect arrested for brutal murders of American missionaries

Suspect arrested for brutal murders of American missionaries

Guatemalan police arrest 7 accused of trafficking 53 migrants who asphyxiated inside tractor-trailer in texas.

Mourners laid bottles of water on the ground at a makeshift memorial which has been erected at the site where 53 migrants died on June 30, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas.

Guatemalan police on Wednesday arrested seven Guatemalans accused of having smuggled 53 migrants from Mexico and Central America who died of asphyxiation in 2022 in Texas after being abandoned in a tractor-trailer in the scorching summer heat.

They were the latest arrests after years of investigation into the deadliest tragedy of migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico.

The dead included eight children.

Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez told The Associated Press the arrests were made possible after 13 raids in three of the country’s departments.

They included Rigoberto Román Mirnado Orozco, the alleged ringleader of the smuggling gang whose extradition has been requested by the United States.

Police also seized vehicles and cash and rescued other migrants during the operations, they said in a statement.

“This is a collaborative effort between the Guatemalan police and Homeland Security , in addition to other national agencies, to dismantle the structures of human trafficking, one of the strategic objectives of the government President Bernardo Arévalo in order to take on the phenomenon of irregular migration,” Jiménez said.

Six people were charged previously.

Homero Zamorano Jr., who authorities say drove the truck, and Christian Martinez were arrested shortly after the migrants were found.

Both are from Texas. Martinez later pleaded guilty to smuggling-related charges. Zamorano pleaded not guilty to smuggling-related charges and is awaiting trial.

Four Mexican nationals were also arrested in 2023.

Mourners visit a make-shift memorial to honor the victims and survivors of the recent human smuggling tragedy, Wednesday, July 6, 2022, in San Antonio.

Authorities have said the men were aware that the trailer’s air-conditioning unit was malfunctioning and would not blow cool air to the migrants trapped inside during the sweltering, three-hour ride from the border city of Laredo to San Antonio.

When the trailer was opened in San Antonio, 48 migrants were already dead.

Another 16 were taken to hospitals, where five more died.

The dead included 27 people from Mexico, 14 from Honduras, seven from Guatemala and two from El Salvador.

Mourners laid bottles of water on the ground at a makeshift memorial which has been erected at the site where 53 migrants died on June 30, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas.

Authorities have alleged that the men worked with human smuggling operations in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, and shared routes, guides, stash houses, trucks and trailers, some of which were stored at a private parking lot in San Antonio.

Migrants paid the organization up to $15,000 each to be taken across the U.S. border.

The fee would cover up to three attempts to get into the country.

Orozco, the alleged ringleader, was arrested in the Guatemalan department of San Marcos, on the border with Mexico.

The other arrests occurred in the departments of Huehuetenango and Jalapa.

The police identified the gang as “Los Orozcos” because several of those arrested are family members and carry that surname.

“Said organization illegally housed and transferred hundreds of migrants of different nationalities to the United States, collecting millions of quetzales (the national currency) through several years of operation,” said the Guatemalan government.

Myers covers the climate shift in 1213 BC that created the conditions for the Ten Plagues of Egypt, the volcano in 44 BC that helped launch the Roman Empire, the storm in 1814 that ended the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, the two major blizzards that helped create the New York Subway System in 1888, and much, much more.

RH England, at the Historic Aynho Park

RH (formerly Restoration Hardware), the popular upmarket American homewares and furniture brand, opened its first European venue last year in Aynho Park, an historic manor house, in the Oxfordshire countryside about an hour outside of London. This marked RH's first venture outside of North America, bringing its luxury products to a European audience. This was followed by store openings in Brussels, Munich, Dusseldorf and Madrid and in 2025, RH will open in Paris and in the old Abercrombie & Fitch store in Mayfair, London.

The Orangery restaurant at RH England at Aynyo Park

Aynho Park was a private home, available to hire for fashion shoots and weddings before RH purchased the property in 2021. Now it is open to the public for the first time displaying RH Interiors, Contemporary, Modern and Outdoor collections along with rare art, antiques and artifacts from across the globe. The stunning estate has serious credentials, with grounds by English landscape architect Capability Brown and a wing designed by Sir John Soane. The palatial house was originally built in 1615 but it has been rebuilt, remodelled and embellished many times since including by Soane in 1798. Among England’s rare Grade 1 listed buildings that include Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament, Aynho Park is primarily Classical Revival in style.

Contemporary Design in a Historic Manor House

A Bedroom at RH England

Meticulously preserved, Aynho Park has many of its original features intact, including grand fireplaces, ornate plasterwork and sweeping staircases. All this makes an excellent backdrop for a display of luxurious furniture and homewares. Visitors can wander through the manor's 60 rooms and discover RH's collections in a setting that feels more like a luxurious home than a traditional showroom. This new European flagship is more than just a store; it’s a destination, cleverly combining retail with hospitality. After wandering through the rooms, guests can enjoy a number of food and drink options within the venue. There are two lovely dining options: The Loggia, a chic outdoor terrace with comfortable sofa seating and the beautiful restaurant, The Orangery. There’s also a juice bar beside The Loggia and a wine lounge indoors with a fine selection of champagnes.

The Design Library at RH England

Visitors looking for interior design inspiration can start their visit at RH with a stop in the library to chat with design consultants and leaf through a carefully compiled collection of vintage, contemporary and rare out-of-print books from some of the most influential creators of the last 2,000 years. One of the rare books is a first edition of De Architectura libri Dece (The Ten Books on Architecture ), printed in a modern language, Italian, in 1521. Authored by master Roman architect Vitruvius during the 1 st century BC, the treatise has served as the foundational textbook on classical architecture for centuries. It also serves as the pillar of the RH design ethos – a study of balance, symmetry and perfect proportions.

The Sir John Soane Exhibition at RH England

Another highlight of RH England is an exhibition, created in partnership with Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, that highlights the architect’s life and works at Aynho and other English country houses, with meticulous reproductions of original drawings, architectural models and artifacts.

Mini Lobster Rolls

The Orangery at RH England, known as the greenhouse in the mid-18th century is a stunning dining room, featuring plush velvet seating, a wall of towering arched windows and a lighting installation by master glass designer Alison Berger composed of 567 blown-glass pendants. The live-fire restaurant has an appealing menu with standouts like the fried chicken sando, hailed as the best chicken sandwich in the US, a delicious lobster roll, crispy artichokes served with potatoes, rosemary and lemon aioli and the Chinese chicken salad. A grilled avocado, topped with 15 grams of Petrossian Imperial Kaluga Caviar, is also a moreish treat.

The Loggia, RH England

At the other end of the house is The Loggia , a lovely open-air restaurant and wine bar offering wood-fired pizzas, charcuterie boards and rustic shared plates. The adjacent Juicery, previously the site of Aynho’s kitchen, serves made-to-order fresh juices, craft espresso and grilled baguettes with cultured butter and homemade preserves.

Opening hours: The Gallery: Monday -Saturday 11AM-6PM Sunday 11AM-5PM

The Orangery and The Loggia: Monday -Saturday 11AM-8PM Sunday 11AM-5PM
