Europe’s Finest Yacht Builders 2021
October 22,2021
Here is your whistle stop tour of the some of the best yacht builders across Europe!
Northern europe – feadship & lurssen.
Northern Europe holds host to many of the world’s biggest and best shipyards, none more prestigious than Lurssen and Feadship. With Lurssen being based in Northern Germany, and Feadship, an all-Dutch company, the two industry superpowers are forces to be reckoned with.
The two shipyards hold themselves to similarly high standards as both are renowned for impeccably built, exquisitely designed yachts. This reputation has been forged over generations of new and innovative creations.
Lurssen was founded in 1875 and went on to build the world’s first motorboat in 1886. From then on, it began forging its high-end reputation for originality and quality products. Throughout the modern era of yachting, Lurssen has grown into one of the world’s most pioneering shipyards.
A key example of this is CARINTHIA VI was released to the world in 1973 and set a precedent for the new era of yacht design. To this day, CARINTHIA VI stands out as a modern and sophisticated yacht despite being almost 50 years old. This life span and build quality became a characteristic of the Lurssen name. Now, 145 years on from its conception, Lurssen stands for excellence and will continue to be a pioneer in the industry with groundbreaking concepts such as ALICE, their most recent design that was unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show 2021! https://www.lurssen.com/en/home/
However, all this history and prestige does come at a cost. As one of the most reliable names in the industry, owners have to pay top dollar for their services. For example, Lurssen has built both the longest yacht in the world (AZZAM) and the largest yacht by gross tonnage (DILBAR), with both being valued in excess of 500 million euros.
Feadship also boasts a prestigious history, and is held to much the same standards as Lurssen. However, Feadship was founded more recently in 1949. Nonetheless, the modern-day Feadship are responsible for some of the world’s highest quality yachts, such as VIVA displayed at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show . As far as build quality is concerned, Feadship pulls no punches with their longest build ANNA taking upwards of four years to build. This labour of love ensures the very highest quality, however similar to Lurssen, comes with a significant price tag.
With these Northern European icons of the industry, you get what you pay for and much, much more.
Italy – Benetti & Riva
Within the space of 20 years, the Italian superyacht market has changed drastically. In the past, the Italian superyacht sector was partially known for valuing aesthetics over quality, however, this has changed in the 21st century.
Benetti is one of the oldest companies in the industry, having been founded in 1873. As a result, they have been producing the highest quality yachts for decades. As the largest builder in Italy, Benetti is symbolic of class and excellence with the finest artistic design, as well as impressive build quality.
Benetti possesses all the heritage and prestige of the Northern European builders, however, is focused on a smaller size range than the likes of Lurssen; who prefer to focus on 80 metres plus yachts. Benetti originally found its niche in the 30-60 metre market, however, this may be changing with newly released Giga yachts such as IJE showing the world that Benetti has what it takes to build the biggest and best vessels on the ocean.
Riva is another example of yachting brilliance based in Italy. With a long and sophisticated history, Riva built its reputation on the back of its iconic Riva Aquarama line. The quintessentially Italian tender gave Riva an international platform with which they have moved into the superyacht sector. Products such as the Riva 110 Dolcevita, like our yacht for charter FIGU RATI , provide a fine example of the quality of product Riva are known for today.
Turkey – Bilgin Yachts
Despite having been founded in 1900 and then officially taking the name of Bilgin Yachts in 1964, the Turkish shipyard only became an international supplier in 2002, and since then has grown exponentially. Still in the first 20 years of international development, Bilgin has begun producing some of the largest yachts on the market as well as some of the most luxurious. For example, delivered in 2016, GIAOLU LU is an exemplary illustration of what Bilgin is capable of – a sleek, modern and technologically capable yacht. It is clear that in the future this shipbuilder will become a large name in the industry ready to rival the Northern European giants.
These are just a few of Europe’s premium builders with other industry titans such as Nobiskrug, Oceanco and Heesen also producing some of the very best yachts on the ocean. These outstanding shipyards are sure to make more history in the coming years.

Building a yacht is the ultimate lifestyle dream. A custom yacht enables you to bring your wildest yacht dreams to life, and the world’s best shipyards are only too happy to deliver. From striking state-of-the-design to lavish interiors, a custom-built yacht is the ultimate purchase for the world’s most demanding yachting enthusiasts. If you’re interested in building a yacht, then keep on reading. Here we explore some of the best European shipyards that are behind some of the world’s most extravagant superyachts.
The world’s best shipyards
Nobiskrug is a famous German luxury shipyard and a world leader in constructing luxury yachts and extensive refits. The shipbuilder officially started in 1905 and now operates from two state-of-the-art facilities in northern Germany. Nobiskrug is known for pushing the boundaries of excellence, building made-to-measure custom-built superyachts that incorporate innovative ideas and advanced technology. The shipbuilder’s ‘anything is possible’ ethos has resulted in some of the world’s most spectacular yachts. Amongst Nobiskrug’s most famed yachts is M/Y ARTEFACT, which recently won two coveted Boat International’s annual World Superyacht Awards.
The shipyard’s soon-to-be-completed PROJECT BLACK SHARK is one of the most eagerly anticipated best new yachts, with an expected delivery date of 2023. The five-deck motor yacht is named for its shark-inspired superstructure, which boasts a dorsal-fin-inspired mast structure and a black matte hull to mimic the skin of the black shark. The yacht has been designed by the famed British studio Winch Design with exterior styling by Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design. Reported onboard amenities include two luxury tenders, an on-deck hot tub and a voluminous beach club with spa.
Oceanco is a pedigree shipbuilder based in the Netherlands known for constructing one-of-a-kind, ground-breaking superyachts. The shipbuilder consistently pushes the boundaries of shipbuilding, launching some of the world’s most innovative and pioneering yachts. Take for example M/Y BRAVO EUGENIA, the shipbuilder’s first LIFE Design yacht. Delivered in 2018, she boasts striking design, best-in-class hydrodynamic efficiency, and advanced hybrid propulsion. As well as custom superyachts, Oceanco also provides full refits, lifetime extension services, and superyacht maintenance.
The 117-metre M/Y INFINITY by Oceanco was recently spotted on sea trials at the start of 2022. Formerly known as Project Y719, the head-turning five-deck M/Y INFINITY is set to be one of the best new yachts of 2022. She is the largest Oceanco yacht to date, although she will shortly be superseded by yacht Y721. Details on this yacht are sparse, although reports confirm that she features a steel hull and aluminium superstructure.
Another Oceanco vessel set to launch in 2022 is the 127-metre sailing yacht Y721, reportedly commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The three-masted schooner will be the world’s largest sailing yacht, making headlines worldwide when it was revealed that a bridge in Rotterdam would need to be dismantled to allow the sailing yacht to exit the shipyard.
Royal Hakvoort
Family-owned Royal Hakvoort boasts a century of shipbuilding experience combining traditional craftsmanship values passed on through generations coupled with leading yachting technology. The shipyard specialises in building custom and semi-custom motor yachts and sailing yachts up to 65-metres, alongside extensive refits at their state-of-the-art facilities in Holland, Monnickendam. In late 2020, the yard received Royal Designation, recognising its exemplary service levels for more than 100 years.
Iconic yachts such as M/Y LADY M II, delivered in 1994, helped cement Royal Hakvoort as a pedigree shipbuilder capable of building some of the world’s finest yachts. Amongst the shipyard’s most recent projects is the superb M/Y SCOUT, one of the largest Hakvoort yachts at 63.72-metres. Boasting elegant interiors and striking timeless exteriors, the yacht showcases all the expertise of Royal Hakvoort.
The shipyard recently just signed a new build project with luxury yacht brokerage Fraser. At 65-metres, the yacht – which is currently named Project YN254 – will be the largest vessel delivered by Royal Hakvoort, sealing its status as a pedigree European shipbuilder. Limited details are known about the shipyards latest project, although reports state that it will boast naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design and exterior and interior design by Sinot Design. The yacht will boast a careful balance of both interior and exterior space, reports state, along with a superb range of amenities, including a beach club with a gym, Jacuzzi, massage room, and library.
If you wish to build a yacht , consider working with an experienced yacht management company with experience working with the world’s best shipbuilders. Building a yacht is a complex process. An experienced yacht brokerage will expertly guide you through every stage of the build process, from sketch board to on the water.

European yacht charters are growing in popularity for the more experienced charterer - even when leaving aside the most popular Mediterranean counties. Anyone on a yacht charter holiday in the British Isles or Europe will experience great cultural and scenic variety. There are yacht charter operators in England, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Holland, Sweden and Norway, to name a few. There are also yacht charter locations for every level of skill, experience and budget from the shallow east coast of England to the rugged highlands of Scotland and the soaring fjords of Norway. Scotland can sometimes be tranquil and sometimes rugged; Britain can be sometimes busy and sometimes deserted; Brittany can be sometimes sunny and sometimes rainy. No matter what you desire you will no-doubt encounter a concentration of history and culture.
Europe is one of the world's seven continents. Europe stretches from the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, to the Ural and Caucasus Mountains in the east where is it 'divided' from Asia. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Caspian Sea, Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast.
‘Europe’ therefore does include countries that borders with the Western Mediterranean Sea such as the popular yacht destinations of Spain, France and Italy, however these well developed yachting destinations found in Southern Europe are discussed in more detail under the Western Mediterranean yacht charter section .
Northern Europe has all the main types of yacht charters available in the United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) Germany and Russia, including motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and motor yachts. There are also more and more superyachts that visit the area, available for charter including explorer yachts or expedition yachts. Weather patterns make Northern Europe’s summer charter season shorter than that in the Mediterranean, which is why fewer luxury yachts tend to be permanently based in Northern European waters. Summer, from May to about September, is the main season and the best time to charter a yacht in Europe.
- Scandinavia
Yacht chartering in Scandinavia offers charters the possibility to explore the regions mighty Norwegian fjords, un-crowded serenity and peaceful historic ports. Norway boasts beautiful glaciers, some of which actually tumble down from the mountains to meet the sea. Finland’s famous energetic capital city Helsinki is also on the water and displays an artistically rich artistic cultural center. The magical cruising areas of Sweden reveal a tapestry of glistening lakes neat and vibrant cities, whilst Denmark’s Jutland peninsula is another magical location.Time spent on a luxury yacht charters in Scandinavia are relaxed and slowly paced, as the summer months provide more than 20 hours of sunlight each day so there is simply no reason to rush through the spectacular environment.
The peaceful allure of Scandinavia is a stark contrast to the colourful chaos of Mediterranean life: Snow-capped mountains meet with ancient fjords and waterfalls tumble from streams high above. Holiday makers on a luxury yacht charter will uncover nations in beautiful balance with the present and past, where castle ruins meet with cycle paths and hiking trails that connect into the town centres.
Sunbathing opportunities are easy to come across, and for those groups full of energy that want to spend all day looking around the museums, galleries, churches and castles during opening hours before trying out all the water toys, then the summer months with 20-hour days will fulfil your desires.
United Kingdom
The United Kingdom which includes England, Ireland Scotland and Wales is a famous and ancient yachting location. England, a place of sailing tradition has of the world's most important and longest running sailing regattas including the Fastnet and the Around the Island Races. The America’s Cup began here, but there are also new sailing races in and around the Solent, such as the 2012 J Class classic sailing events.
An Ireland yacht charter offers numerous marinas, ports and local pubs where you can sample some Guinness share a laugh and hear a song. Admire the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club in the world, Bantry Bay and Oysterhaven harbor. An area of outstanding natural beauty, Scotland’s west coast embodies intrigue and mystic with mist-shrouded lochs as well as atmospheric port towns. While a yacht charter up the North Wales coastline provides dramatic scenery, wildlife and hidden coves. Anglesey and the North Wales coast is becoming an increasingly popular location for yachting and chartering and offers a variety of unspoiled beaches, sheltered anchorages and marinas within comfortable cruising distance.
Most tourists know of London and Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon, but few have cruised along the winding coastline to witness the patchwork hills of East Anglia, or the rugged, rocky shores of Scotland that are home to puffins, seals and whales. Charming villages, grandiose castles and impressive country homes are all within easy reach of the beaches and coves, which are excellent in themselves for water sports and Scuba diving on an adventure holiday.
A luxury yacht charter is one of the best ways to explore this island nation, as a journey inland can easily be achieved in a couple of hours.
Visit the atmospheric old harbours and Victorian piers, hike along trails through National Parks and discover the different accents and cultures of each region. Devon and Cornwall are a favourite scenic trip for dramatic coastlines containing fossil-lined cliffs and picturesque lighthouses, while the stone circles of Wales have always attracted the inquisitive.
The coastal towns of the south have plenty of shopping opportunities, from high end luxury goods to factory outlet bargains. There is also plenty of opportunity to join a concert, go to the theatre or join in with a local festival.
Germany & Russia
Germany and the Baltic Sea has a yachting history dating back to ancient seafarers. This is contrasted with an area which now, in modern times, is the birth place of some of the world’s most important superyachts by shipyards like Lurssen, Abeking & Rasmussen and Blohm & Voss. Island groups in the Baltic Sea provide a variety of seaside towns and villages to visit, as well as picturesque landscapes far off the beaten track. Russia has also seen some yacht charters over the last few years. St. Petersburg is the cultural capital of Russia and few cities showcase as many art galleries, concert halls, museums and theaters that can compare.
Head off the beaten track and discover some of Germany's hidden gems along the north coast in the Baltic Sea. National parks are nestled between scenic villages, where modern buildings blend with centuries of history to create a tranquil setting for guests to take in at their leisure.
The Baltic Sea is home to some of the most prestigious superyacht shipyards in the world and as you cruise through you might be one of the first to see a brand new luxury yacht undergoing sea trials in preparation for delivery to their new owner.
To the east, St Petersburg is one of Russia's most iconic locations and as a culture capital, charter groups have plenty of indoor and outdoor exhibitions to discover to the backdrop of broad canals and brightly coloured spires. This world-class destination offers the awe-inspiring Museum Complex St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Peterhof Grand Palace and the State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace, which is filled with the works from the Masters.

EUROPE Yacht Charter Enquiry
Hi Amanda, The boat was great. The staff were too. Marin in particular. He was super knowledgeable and we felt in good hands. I'd say that maybe a very slight comment is that a Croatian crew and cooking etc is always going to be a little more "Eastern European" than, say an Italian crew. This is not to say it was lacking, just a little different and perhaps requires a little more communication. Thanks for everything. Was really a wonderful holiday I'd love to do a boat trip again.

Olympus : Angebot in Monaco
Bold : Weit gereist in diesem Jahr

Map of Europe (Countries and Cities)
About the map
This map of Europe displays its countries, capitals, and physical features. Each country has its own reference map with highways, cities, rivers, and lakes. Europe is a continent in the northern hemisphere beside Asia to the east, Africa to the south (separated by the Mediterranean Sea), the North Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Europe occupies the westernmost region of the Eurasian landmass.
Two major peninsulas are the Iberian Peninsula, which contains Spain and Portugal , as well as the Italian Peninsula. Scandinavia is the northernmost trio of countries including Norway , Sweden , and Finland . Whereas islands like Iceland , Britain, and Ireland extend into the North Atlantic Ocean.
Because the Ural Mountains mark Europe’s eastern boundary with Asia, Europe includes part of Russia . This includes its most populous cities, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Otherwise, the Caucasus Mountains and the Turkish Straits mark Europe’s southern continental border with Asia.
