The Catch 23 is an 80-foot Viking Sportfishing Boat built in 2018. Known for their high-quality sportfishing and cruising yachts, Viking Yachts has its roots in New Jersey, USA, and was founded by brothers Bob and Bill Healey in 1964.
Today, the company is one of the world’s leading yacht builders.

The Catch 23 calls Jupiter, Florida, its home dock, but Michael Jordan has been known to take it up and down the East Coast of the US and the Bahamas for various sports fishing tournaments.
Over the years, the Catch 23 has participated in some of the biggest Marlin tournaments in the world, such as the Ocean City, Maryland White Marlin Open and the Big Rock Tournament in Morehead City, North Carolina.
Jordan’s yacht and private jet both feature the same wrap print based on his iconic Air Jordan 3 sneakers. He uses the Catch 23 for sports fishing tournaments and relaxation, often enjoying cigars and good company on board.
The captain of the”Catch 23″ is Stetson Turney, and he has performed well for Mr. Jordan. For example, during the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Tournament, the crew secured a first-place finish with a 73 lb White Marlin, although I don’t believe Jordan was on board.
Despite being a vessel designed for function more than luxury relaxation, Jordan has ensured that the Catch 23 is equipped with comfortable and stylish interiors.
The yacht features white leather and marble finishes, as well as hardwood surfaces, allowing guests to relax on couches, bar stools, and booth seating in the salon and galley on the main deck.
The enclosed flybridge is spacious, offering ample seating for guests who prefer to be near the helm rather than downstairs. If Jordan chooses to have a crew on deck, this space ensures that everyone can socialize and enjoy their time on board.

During the past 20-plus years, I’ve reviewed many of the sport-fishermen that have slipped down the ways at the Viking facility in New Gretna, New Jersey. I have even been on the production line of some of those very boats. I reported on the advances in technology and building techniques that have allowed Viking CEO Patrick Healey and his designers, technicians, workers, installers, captains, and sales and support staff to live up to the Viking mantra: building a better boat every day. Proving the point anew is the builder’s Viking 80C.
To be sure, there’s beauty in this beast, and it is obvious to the eye and the senses as she comes into view. She bears all the hallmarks of her 92 Enclosed Bridge big sister, starting with a wonderfully symmetrical profile topped off by a skyscraper-like tower, built by Viking’s own Palm Beach Towers.
Immediately noticeable are her sharp entry, proud bow and foredeck, well-proportioned house, striking black mask, low-slung 216-square-foot cockpit and curved transom with eye-catching tumblehome in the corners. “One of the things we do on all our boats, right up through the 92, is to figure out how best to use the space by looking at the previous one,” says Ryan Higgins, Viking’s corporate captain. That philosophy leads to constant evolution in aspects such as cockpit ergonomics, interior stowage and especially engine-room layout.
This yacht’s engine room is well laid out, even with the big, optional, 2,635 hp MTU 16V 2000 M96L diesels that were installed on our test boat. (Twin 1,915 hp Cat C32 ACERTs are standard.) Plenty of headroom (6 feet 4 inches on centerline), total access to all maintenance areas and equipment, refrigerator-white Awlgrip finish and places for all the redundant systems (including a pair of 29 kW Onan gensets and two centralized sea-water pumps) are just some of the features found here. “It comes from all the members of our design teams actually getting out on the boats and using them as they are meant to be used,” Higgins says.
It might seem like a small point, but I noticed that the sitting height on the lower mezzanine gives the crew perfect sight lines aft, to either side or while right behind the burly Release Marine fighting chair. A forward-facing curve on the mezzanine’s edge provides a bit more space behind the chair too.
The business end of the 80C has stowage under each gunwale together with an oil X-Change-R system with quick connects, drop-in deck boxes, a dedicated compartment for a Seakeeper 26 gyro, transom and in-sole livewells, Eskimo shaved-ice makers, chill boxes, four stainless-steel bait trays, a refrigerated step box and an upper mezzanine bench with more stowage underneath. And yes, the mezzanine is air-conditioned from above.
“Laying out these bigger boats has become more and more custom for us,” Higgins says. “With this boat, and the 92, each one is different. And as long as the synergy between the owner and the factory is planned well in advance, there is enough leeway to accommodate their needs.”
The interior layout is given equal weight, with the portside galley forward, turned stern-to-bow instead of the usual athwartships position. Past the starboard dinette — with its rod stowage drawer below — and down the stairs, a companionway leads to the staterooms. “We introduced this layout on the 92, and it went over so well that we decided to offer it here,” Higgins says.
The salon has a C-shaped sofa to port with stowage below each section, as well as space for three guests to stretch out on a long run. Just as I entered the electric sliding door from the cockpit, there was a day-head to starboard. (On the 80 Enclosed Bridge model, the head will move forward of the dinette.) This part of the salon also has a stowage console with a 60-inch TV.
“As far as A/V equipment, we’re running a [universal remote control] system from any remote in whichever stateroom you are in,” Higgins says. “You can pull up navigation equipment, plotters, sounders, radar and cameras, as well as controlling all the lighting and the Sirius radio and weather.” In addition, the 80C has Dometic’s new Smart Touch Integrated Intelligence Control system, allowing onboard or off-site smartphone or tablet control of the watermaker, refrigeration, air conditioning and any other Dometic component.
The space just forward of the galley has a bunk room, which can be an office, extra pantry or rod and tackle stowage. “Hull No. 4 put a full-size, side-by-side washer and dryer in here, with lots of shelving space,” Higgins says.
A five-stateroom, five-head layout belowdecks includes a full-beam master, a queen-berth VIP forward to port, a pair of bunk staterooms to starboard and, fully forward, a forepeak stateroom. All are spacious, with headroom averaging between 6 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 7 inches, plus all the stowage needed for extended time away from home.
Topsides, the bridge is well laid out, with clean sight lines forward and aft. Because of an elevated helm platform, views of the bow are unobstructed, even while guests are gathered in the seating area.
The helm itself is big enough to hold an array of displays under a glass cover. Many operations are controlled by easy-to-reach, soft-touch buttons, all within an arm’s length to either side. The Dometic STIIC touchscreen and the Carling Technologies OctoPlex system, which controls all the breakers on the boat, are readily accessible, along with management of the FLIR cameras, Viking VIPER independent rudder steering system, Seakeeper gyro, fire systems and more.
“I can control just about every system on the boat from here,” Higgins says. And, as with everywhere aboard the 80C, this space has plenty of stowage, along with refrigerated drink boxes and freezers.
I finished my tour and Higgins hit the starters. It was time to leave the dock from the Viking Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida. Underway, the 80C delivered pure Viking excitement and performance.
Thanks to weight-saving techniques throughout the boat — including a Kevlar-infused hull, carbon-fiber laminate in the deckhouse and hardtop, and a smoother running bottom with strut cones and many of the pickups flush-mounted — this 145,461-pound battlewagon moved through the water at 41-plus knots at her top end, with a comfortable 2,100 rpm cruise of 35.2 knots. She carved precise turns at those 35-knot speeds and backed down with nimbleness, assurance and control as the electric tabs automatically retracted. I had the feeling of hitting the throttles and letting raw power take over as she jumped out of the hole. Once you get your hands on the wheel, it’s hard to let go.
As a portent of positive things to come, and alongside some hefty weed lines, we sighted no fewer than three large baitballs breaking on top and a slew of cutting sailfish rounding up their food. They were sure signs the future is bright for the Viking 80C.

Like all Vikings, the 80 Convertible hones its blue-water DNA from its stable mates. Mechanically, the 80 Convertible shares a commonality of technical features proven time and time again for reliability and practicality. Chilled water air conditioning provides cooling and heat throughout the yacht with individual thermostats in the staterooms and the salon for efficient climate control. A Delta-T engine room ventilation system with thermostatically controlled supply and discharge fans provide proper fresh air circulation and water intrusion suppression. Pneumatically controlled engine room ventilation dampers are integrated into the yacht's fire suppression system. Viking's proprietary VIPER (Viking Independent Programmable Electro-Hydraulic Rudder) steering eliminated the tie-bar for independent rudder operation and optimizes response and reduces drag at low, mid and high speeds for extraordinary maneuverability in all sea conditions.
A lengthy list of standard equipment includes a hydraulic bow thruster, a centralized seawater system, dual freshwater pumps, Veem S-class propellers, two 29kW Onan generators, two Glendinning Cablemasters, shore power cord combiner and isolation transformer, and an Octoplex touch screen electrical distribution panel with monitors in the salon and on the flying bridge with manual back-up.
Powered with tier 3 MTU Series 2000 V16 M96L engines each developing 2635MPH with Blue Vision controls and display monitors provide a top speed of 40 knots with an effortless high 30 knot cruise, depending upon load, sea conditions. It is worth noting that MTU looked to Viking to be the first manufacturer to use this new propulsion system.

Used Merritt 80 Custom Sportfish For Sale
The first Merritt 80 was custom built in 2001 ( Merritt Yachts Hull #71) for a client who initially wanted a 75ft boat, but the length had to be increased to accommodate his requirements for the boat. Designed by Roy Merritt, grandson of the founder, Franklin Merritt, and third generation boatbuilder and owner/operator of Merritt Boats & Engine Works in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Besides Roy’s uncle Buddy and father, Allen who were also avid tuna tournament anglers, Roy was influenced by Jim Smith and learned the cold-molding construction method from him. Roy went on to further innovate Merritt’s hull construction from cold-molding (1970s) to fiberglass composite construction after learning about Klegecell, a closed-cell PVC foam’s excellent properties for reducing weight (vital for enhancing speed and fuel efficiency), increasing strength/rigidity, sound absorption, and more. Core construction led to greater production efficiencies, while continuing to offer significant client customizations. While hull shape and dimensions are constrained to the Merritt 80’s mold, deck configurations, interior décor, appliances, amenities, cockpit outfitting, tower and other options including power plant, equipment, and electronics, to paint color, are all customized to the client’s wishes, making each Merritt 80 a unique, custom boat.

The Merritt 80 Sportfish convertible is an extremely efficient running yacht, capable of hitting a top speed of 37 knots. It accelerates quickly going from idle to 30 knots in just 11 seconds! The hull’s wide chines provide greater lift and fuel economy. Merritt used an advanced resin-infused epoxy/Kevlar/E-glass skin, vacuum-bagged with coring throughout the hull, including the running surface, for a lightweight all-composite hull.
The 80 Sportfish’s exterior design includes the extremely popular “balcony” deck (cockpit mezzanine) that is along the salon’s aft bulkhead and is the same level as the salon. Guests can watch the cockpit action and crew can keep an eye on the lines seated in shaded and air-conditioned comfort within easy reach of the built-in beverage chiller. Unless a client specifically requests its elimination, the balcony seating will automatically be included in the design. Everything is built-in for a clean, clutter-free fishing zone and throughout the interior, allowing Merritt’s beautifully finished book-matched woodwork and joinery to impart a rich old-world patina on all the cabinetry and furniture that conceal high-end appliances, electronics, and other items. The 2001 Merritt 80 is configured with a generous 4 stateroom, 4 head accommodations layout and a large tackle locker located amidships on the companionway.
The 2006 Merritt 80 (Hull #83) also features a 4/4 layout with an exceptional master suite that features double entry doors and custom hand carved posts on either side of the king berth headboard. Instead of the tackle locker, there is a utility room housing the Crestron video and audio entertainment system electronics, along with the washer and dryer and an extra teak-framed pullman-style berth! This yacht also features a custom corner bar with bottle and glass storage and icemaker in bottom cabinet and illuminated etched glass mural in the upper cabinet. The aft bulkhead window also features a custom etched glass mural, making this 80S a true work of art!
Yet both the 2001 and 2006 models were built to perform and maneuver on fish, able to take on the rigors of bluewater gamefishing anywhere in the world.
The Merritt 80’s length overall (LOA) is 80’3” with a 20’3” beam. Maximum draft is 5’9” and minimum draft is 5’6.” Diesel fuel capacity is 3,051 gallons, freshwater capacity is 450 gallons, and the holding tank is 125 gallons. The 2006 model features twin 2000hp MTU 16V2000 M91 diesel engines with a maximum speed of 36 knots and cruising speed of 29 knots. Performance varied with choice of engines and other features, and other specifications could vary slightly from year to year, depending on owner’s customizations.

Viking Yachts 80 Convertible
Viking Yacht’s latest creation in the 80-foot sportfish category combines heart-pounding acceleration, hardcore fishing options, and a cockpit made for fighting angry Marlin. Step through the door into the salon however, and you are greeted with satin walnut joinery, leather appointments, and a convenient day head just to the left. The J-shaped lounge and hidden 60-inch flatscreen t.v. provide an excellent area to take a break from fishing. A dinette is built-in and sits slightly above the rest of the salon because it doubles as rod storage with the ability to hold 80-pound outfits. And for the captains that like to cook, everyone will appreciate the size of the walk-in pantry in the galley which is literally the size of an extra stateroom.
Outside on the cockpit, which measures 216-square feet, everything is rigged for the serious tournament angler. This fish-focused area includes a transom door for pulling in your catch, tackle storage, freezer, live well, fish boxes, and an ice chest. And of course, looking down onto the cockpit is the custom tuna tower from Palm Beach Towers that includes all electronics and equipment already installed.
The Viking 80C has five staterooms on board including a luxurious full-beam master suite that boasts the full king-sized walkaround bed just like her bigger sibling, the 92 Convertible. Each stateroom on board has their own private head and shower in true Viking fashion.
All that boat can reach 40+ knots? Powered with tier 3 MTU Series 2000 V16 M96L engines each pushing over 2,600HP launches the 80C right out of the water and can hit max speed in no time with a comfortable cruise in the mid 30 knots. There is plenty of power on board as well to run the A/C with two 29KW Onan generators so you never have to worry about fishing in the heat. Earlier this year Michael Jordan’s yacht, a beautiful Viking sportfish, participated in the Ocean City, Maryland White Marlin Open .
Touted as the world’s largest billfish tournament, the White Marlin Open draws thousands of anglers and spectators every summer. More than $5 million in prize money was awarded in 2018. At the August 2019 event Jordan entered his Viking, named Catch 23, and he was entry number 123.
The custom 80 foot Viking is decked out in a wrap matching the famous elephant print from his Air Jordan 3 sneakers. His plane is decked out in the same print.
Jordan himself was spotted on the yacht enjoying cigars and some great weather and fishing! The Viking 80 set up to win, the 216 square-foot cockpit is equipped for tournament fishing with a transom door, freezer, tackle, and general stowage space, live well capacity, fish wells, an ice chest and a chill box for drinks.
Update: June 9, 2020 MJ was in Morehead City, NC for the Big Rock Tournament and his Viking hauled in a 442.3 lb Blue Marlin! It won’t win the tournament, but it was great to see the billionaire owner of one of these boats actually there at the weigh in!

Powered with tier 3 MTU Series 2000 V16 M96L engines each developing 2,635 mhp with Blue Vision controls and display monitors, our testing calculations indicate a top speed in excess of 40 knots with an effortless high 30 knot cruise, depending upon load, sea conditions and ambient environmental factors. These engines are the same as used aboard the 92 Convertible. It is interesting to note that MTU looked to Viking to be the first manufacturer to use this new propulsion system and Viking’s success with its 92 series verified the engines comprise a winning combination for speed, efficiency, range, acceleration and quietness, which will replicate aboard the new 80 Convertible.
Entered through an electric sliding door on the cockpit mezzanine deck, the salon is a forest of satin walnut joinery and leather appointments, created by the artful direction from the team of the William Bales and Company. The 21 ft. 5 in. beam and the use of the vertical space is immediately apparent creating a free flowing movement with the ambiance of a great room. A day head is immediately to starboard. To port, a J lounge and coffee table is a virtual conference area, opposite walnut cabinetry housing a 60 in. flat screen television on an electric lift. Forward to starboard a raised built-in dinette serves a dual purpose with rod stowage for 80 pound outfits. The fore and aft style of the galley maximizes useful space with under counter refrigeration beneath a second dining area with bar stools, while the outboard counter accommodates a double sink and electric cooktop. Forward of the galley, a versatile walk-in pantry is as spacious as a stateroom and can be outfitted as such.
Built for the ultra rich
Inviting accommodations include five generously appointed staterooms, including a full beam master suite with a king size walk-around bed. The port and forward staterooms have walk-around queen beds. The two starboard staterooms have upper and lower berths, and are surprisingly spacious thanks to the use of sliding entrance doors which maximize interior space. Every stateroom has a large head and fiberglass shower stall. A washer and dryer are located in the companionway.
On the flying bridge, a center console command station gives the operator a great view underway and while fishing. Three pedestal helm seats are standard, and additional seating is available on port and starboard lounges, each with rod stowage below. A U-shape lounge and table forward of the console seats more guests, and is notably below the forward sightlines of the helmsman thanks to the raised standing platform behind the console. A freezer is forward between a refrigerated box and a sink with a freshwater outlet. While air conditioning is available on the open flying bridge, a climate controlled enclosed bridge with access from the salon and the mezzanine deck also is available. Additionally, the enclosed bridge convertible also can be ordered with an open Sky Bridge.
A lengthy list of standard equipment includes a hydraulic bow thruster, a centralize seawater system, dual freshwater pumps, Veem S-class propellers, two 29 kW Onan generators, two Glendinning Cablemasters, Charles PM 100 shore power cord combiner and isolation transformer, and an Octoplex touch screen electrical distribution panel with monitors in the salon and on the flying bridge with manual back-up.
