Foam Series: Selecting the Right Marine Interior Foam

While exterior cushions are all about being waterproof or water draining, interior cushions should be much more comfortable, durable and antimicrobial. We recommend two types of foam for use inside boat cabins: Sailrite® CushionRite® Dry Fast foam and antimicrobial polyurethane foam. Let’s go over when to use each type of foam in different circumstances.

Wet vs. Dry Cabin

Foam Series Selecting the Right Marine Interior Foam 3

All of the foam we recommend for boat interiors is antimicrobial, but there's a difference between Dry Fast and polyurethane foam. To decide which one is right for you, think of how you use the space. Does your cabin stay mostly dry, or do you frequently set wet equipment on your cushions? If your cabin sees more moisture, you’ll want to prioritize moisture-friendly foam like Dry Fast. Dry Fast foam features an open cell structure that lets water run directly through the foam. Nothing gets trapped to cause mildew and the foam dries out very quickly.

If your boat cabin stays mostly dry, we recommend CushionRite Standard or Premium polyurethane antimicrobial foams. CushionRite Standard is a medium density seating foam with a density rating of 1.8 pounds per cubic foot. CushionRite Premium is a high density foam with a rating of 2.8 pounds per cubic foot. Both foams are treated with a biocide agent to prevent mold and mildew growth. Standard/medium density foam is the standard foam used by boat builders, but Premium/high density will last longer. Both are sufficient for the amount of moisture inside a cabin.

Weekend Cruiser vs. Liveaboard

Foam Series Selecting the Right Marine Interior Foam 2

When it comes to how long your foam will last, you need to consider how frequently you will use it. The deciding factor in foam longevity is density. This is what keeps the foam feeling supportive and prevents it from bottoming out. If you’re a liveaboard who will sit and sleep on your cushions every day, we highly recommend using Premium foam for both settees and mattresses. This is the same foam we recommend for living room cushions in homes on land.

If you’re more of a weekend cruiser, Standard or Dry Fast foam should suit you just fine since you’ll use your cushions less frequently. Dry Fast foam might be of particular interest as a mattress for a weekend cruiser because of its unmatched breathability. The open nature of the foam’s structure allows for good airflow to keep you cool at night. Cost may also be a factor. Standard foam is less expensive than Premium — a benefit for occasional use.

Weighing the pros and cons of each foam and how it fits into your onboard lifestyle is the key to selecting the right foam. In the end, it all comes down to your personal preferences and habits. Replacement Interior Cushions

Dave Swanson

I am amazed at the cost of replacing interior cushions on our 1989 Hunter 30. We have a total of 2 v berth, 2 aft berth, and 2 salon and settee seats plush back cushions. The current cushions are OEM, and aside from some minor tears are in relativley good shape. However, the upolstery looks dated and we are thinging about replacing them. Initial quotes from boat upholster companies have been around $3000-$4000. That is roughly 10% of the boats value! I have heard that non-marine upholster businesses might offer a better deal. Anyone have any experience with this and could you offer some sage advice as to how to reduce the cost of this effort. Do it your self perhaps. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks and happy sailing. Dave Swanson S/V Getaway

Dave, the main salon on our H34 was about $880 with tax. We supplied the fake suede. Scored a good deal on the cloth. The seat backs were good and the bottoms are new foam and included in the first cost. You are being quoted a huge amount of cash. It sounds like tradesmen are looking at you and seeing a cash cow. The solution? It's an old story. Look and ask around. Others have had this done. Take names and numbers. Craft-men are out there, but I found that they are busy. The poor economy hasn't filtered down to boaters, it seems.

Cushion recovering I had an automotive/home upholstry shop recover my interior cushions on my 1981 Hunter 30 in the spring of 2001. They did the whole boat (forward cabin, salon, quarter berth) for about $1600. I have not had any issues with mold or smell, etc. as of yet. The previous covers were the originals and were very 70's so they needed an update.

John K Kudera

I agree with both Freds Get Quotes from local non marine upholstry folks, same or better quality work, without the "marine" added cost. Ask others, or look in the yellow pages. My main cabin re do cost $1,100 done with all new foam.

local fabric shop We had our salon cushions, aft master queen and V berth queen done... all cushions and fabric replaced. We hired a local furniture upolster shop to do the work,,they do fabrics mostly but also do cushions....we had the bunks and the seate' benches done in 5" foam with a double wrap, and the backs of the seate' done in 3" with a single wrap....then cover the salon with flag blue fabric with white pipeing..the bunks are done in white. total coast was about $2,500.........HOWEVER!...make sure you get a fabric that wont RUN when wet......we developed a leak in out starboard port and the water ran the blue into the white....and when our daughter sat on one cushion with her wet swim suit when she got up she had a blue bum....we ended up replacing the salon cushion fabric...again.........But I think you will save$$$ if you go alternate from marine suppliers....PS we gave them our original cushions for templets. good luck.......its probably a great time to get this done now .

Number of rubs! I have friend in the rag trade who gave me advice regarding material and things you should look for, these are: Water and milew resistant. Scotch guarding. Number of rubs. The first two are pretty self explanetory and most marine fabrics come protected this way. The third item relates to the wear factor. The higher the number the longer the fabric will last before wearing out. You will find this number on a label stuck to the back of the fabric in most sample books.

DIY Do it youself. 4" firm foam will be $300, fabric will be under a hundred at JoAnn's and find long zippers on eBay for a buck a piece. Worked for me and beats putting thousands more in an old Hunter.

cushions I had the v berth, 3 setee seats and seat backs and two aft cabin cushions (approximately a queen size berth) redone on my Beneteau OC 281 this summer. The foam was in good shape and did not need replacement. I bought fabric that Ford uses in cars, there is really a pretty good selection and it is reasonably priced. If you think about it, car seats face a lot of the same challenges as interior boat cushions. On the backs and bottoms, I used matching marine vinyl. It doesn't show, it is less expensive than fabrick, and it provides a good surface for self-adhesive velcro to keep things in place when you bury the rail. I had a local upholsterer do the measuring so I knew how much fabric to get and then had her do the work. Total cost was ±$1000

DIY. DIY! Buy Don Casey book & home sewing machine. 2 weekends and you are done (OK may be 3). It's not that complicated. I am finishing 9th cushion next weekend. Never did it before. Was quoted $2,500 - just work. Now it comes to $1,000 - fabric, thread and sewing machine, no foam though. Good luck.

Gerry Cooper

DIY replacement Dave, we are in the middle of recovering our Hunter 43 saloon cushions and so far have spent about $700 on fabric, stuffing and new foam. As has been pointed out, it's not rocket science and you really just need to unpick what you have to use as a template. Good luck

DIY also I did my whole interior last off season using Sunbrella furniture fabric and reusing the old foam in all but one moldy cushion. Cost after buying materials on ebay was about $300. I just finished making custom cockpit cushions out of the standard Sunbrella fabric and 2" foam. This will probably be free because I bought a role of Sunbrella large enough that I can probably sell for at least what I paid after removing a few yards. Lots of good fabric bargains on ebay because people buy whole rolls to do large projects and sell the leftovers for much less than retail. Tim R

Thanks All - I'm Empowered Thanks everyone. I am feeling empowered to do it myself. However, first I am going to create layout sketches of each cushion, take some digital pictures of the existing cushions, and get at least three legitamate quotes from upholster's to see what the "turn key" cost will be. If the quotes are still "way out," like greater than $1500, I am going to buy new foam, buy the fabric and make them myself. That way I will know how much money I am saving when I am making them myself on the evenings and weekends. Heck, I might even buy a new sewing machine! Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I love these forums. Dave S/V Getaway Dave

US Yacht Cushions Dave: You may want to check out these guys. They are in FL. and have the pattern for your boat too. They use top quality materials and know the marine environment. I do not have their number, but you may be able to find it in the archives. Think you can get a new interior made from commerical grade fabric for under $1000 for your boat (including shipping).

The Almighty Boat Cushion: A guide to boat cushion fabrication, foam, fabric, fit & style!

You might consider your boat cushions last when it comes to the many things that need attention on a boat. Let’s be honest, comfortable, stylish, well-fitted interior boat cushions are arguably one of the more important aspects of your boat for many reasons.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Aside from giving your boat a clean and attractive aesthetic, having high quality boat seating provides comfort, style and maximum functionality no matter what type of vessel you have. Whether you are buying a boat for the first time or you have owned a boat for many years, having beautiful, comfortable and high functioning seating areas inside and outside your boat adds to your enjoyment. If you plan to go cruising for long periods or just take guests for an evening boat ride, proper boat seating will make everyone’s experience more pleasurable.

Maybe you have a beloved sailboat that came with outdated, smelly ‘70s style cushions that no longer suit your lifestyle. Or possibly you have a sleek, powerboat that has worn fabric and foam from many years of use. Or perhaps you have always wanted a custom lounge cushion on the bow of your boat. Whether you want a full set of new cushions from scratch, or just an update to your existing cushions, here is what you need to know before you start.

Boat Cushion Fabrication, Foam, Fabric, Fit & Style!

best sailboat cabin cushions

If you are replacing or recovering your cushions for the first time, it’s important to understand what options are available to you so you can enjoy your new cushions for years. In order to help sort out all the details, we have provided a comprehensive breakdown of what to consider when choosing marine cushions. We will show you why having an experienced professional fabricate your custom cushions is the best choice, and why it’s good to steer clear of generic store bought cushions.

5 Basic Parts of a Boat Cushion:

A high quality, long lasting cushion should have the following as part of a basic cushion construction:

A High Quality Zipper – This is a must with any type of boat cushion to remove and wash covers. As we all know, boats can be wet, dirty, salty and stinky so having a durable YKK zipper on all cushions for easy removal is of the utmost importance. These plastic zippers won’t corrode like a metal zipper and they are not only durable but also more flexible, making it easier to remove the cover.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Finished Interior Seams – All interior seams should be over-locked or burned so threads don’t unravel when washed. This also makes the process of removing covers and re-stuffing much easier.

Teflon Thread – Having your cushions constructed with Teflon thread will ensure they last. Cushions can get tugged, stretched or lugged around a boat so using utterly indestructible Teflon thread with 100% PTFE fiber provides durability for the heavy use that boat cushions undergo and is UV resistant.

Durable Fabric – see fabric section below.

Foam Inserts – Obviously, this is also an essential part of the construction of a cushion but it merits its own section to help you discover all the options available. A major consideration when fabricating cushions is whether to start from scratch or re-cover existing foam. Both can be great options. Here are some tips if you are not sure.

New Cushion Foam vs. Recover Existing Cushion Foam

New Foam – If your cushions are more than 10-15 years old, it is often worth the investment to get new foam and start fresh. If you are not sure, take a cushion out of its cover and let it air out. If the foam smells musty, has mold or is misshapen and degraded, it’s time to consider complete new cushions. You can always bring your cushion to our shop and we can help assess it with you.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Recover Existing Foam – If the foam is slightly worn but otherwise intact and has its original shape, we say keep it as long as it smells ok to you. We can steam foam to bring back the original shape and wrap it with new batting to make it look as good as new. This option is great if you don’t have the budget for new foam and it will refresh your seating and extend its useful life.

Types of Foam for Boat Cushions

Open Celled Foam – This is the most common type of foam. It comes in varying densities and can be shaped or cut to any size desired. Often boat cushions need bevels or special cut outs to fit perfectly. We have the ability to create any shape you need. Open cell foam comes in any thickness desired and is a great choice for indoor or outdoor applications. It can be very soft or extremely firm depending on the density you choose.*

Closed Cell Foam – This foam is very dense and firm foam that floats. It is best for bow or cockpit cushions. It will not absorb water like open-cell foam and can be used for flotation as a bonus.

Dry Foam – Porous foam that does not absorb water. It is typically one density. Commonly used if your cushions will be exposed to excessive amounts of water or left outdoors.

How to Choose Foam Density

By far the most common type of foam to use for boat cushions is open-celled foam. It offers densities from very soft to extra firm, depending on your preference for sitting, sleeping or even stepping. Outdoor cockpit cushions lend themselves to firmer foam, as often boat owners need to step on them to access various parts of the boat.

But don’t worry, if you can’t choose one density, combine two. If you like a firm base but a little softer top, we can always combine different densities of foam to create the perfect fit and feel. For boat sleeping areas, you can also choose a high quality foam mattress or memory foam pad and have them cut to shape.

Fabric Choices for Marine Cushions

best sailboat cabin cushions

It is easy to be overwhelmed by all the different types of fabrics you can use for boat cushions. We are experts and can guide you through choosing the best option for your needs.

If you are looking to fabricate cockpit cushions, interior salon cushions, helm seats, v-berth cushions or accent pillows, Sunbrella is a widely popular fabric for all of these. It comes in Marine or Upholstery . Other options include high quality marine vinyl , Phifertex mesh, Ultrasuede, or even leather.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Choosing the best type of fabric – Marine Sunbrella is a wonderful option for outdoor or indoor use and holds up to wear and tear even with constant exposure to the elements. It comes in a large array of colors and textures to satisfy most style needs. If you are looking for more vibrant designs or unique patterns, the Upholstery Sunbrella has a gorgeous selection to choose from. We typically recommend Marine Sunbrella for most boat cushions but the upholstery Sunbrella is an option for your boat interior if you want more pattern and color options.

In addition to popular Sunbrella, marine cushions can be made of high quality marine vinyl, Phifertex mesh, faux leather and/or Ultrasuede. All of these can be used for most boat applications but the choice of fabric can depend on the location of the cushions on the boat as well as how you plan to care for the cushions.

Cushion Fabrication Styles

Whether you are a seasoned design expert or a complete cushion novice, this will help you understand all the basic fabrication style options available for any cushions.

Box and Plate – This cushion has a vertical sidewall that is the same height as the thickness of the cushion. They are made by assembling the top and bottom section of the fabric to the sidewall fabric to form a box. The zipper is in the sidewall.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Cascade/Waterfall – This cushion has the fabric cascades over the front of the cushion with two side panels and back zipper. This is the best style for stripes or patterns because the pattern will not be interrupted.

Butterfly/Knife Edged Corner – This style has two pieces of fabric sewn with a center side seam and corners pleated to create boxing. These cushions do not have a sidewall like the boxed edged and are most common for smaller thicknesses of one or two inches.

Single/Double Welted (or piped) – Has one or both sides piped. It can be in contrasting color. The piping can provide some stability, but it is mainly for style and decor.

Upholstered Cushions – A cushion stapled to a backer board and often glued or nailed to furniture or the structure of the boat. Built in boat upholstery can be complex. We are happy to assess your upholstery and determine the best solution for your boat.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Throw Pillow – A small decorative pillow with poly or down fill and a zipper for easy removal. Throw pillows are great for style accents on a boat.

Bolster – A long, typically cylindrical, cushion or pillow that is usually firm for support.

Measuring and Templating for Boat Cushions

best sailboat cabin cushions

In almost all cases, it is best to have our expert staff template and measure your project. This ensures that you get the best fit and will accommodate all possible cutouts, odd shapes or hardware placement. In some cases, if foam is in good shape, it can be copied or recovered but we always prefer to visit your boat so all the details can be taken into account.

Fit, Function and Style Extras for Boat Cushions

Let’s go beyond the basics. Presumably you have style ideas and want no-fuss solutions, however, complicating conditions may exist when making cushions for a boat. All of the following should be considered when designing and fabricating your cushions.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Hardware / Attachments – Cushion hardware is very important. Depending on how you use your boat, you may need attachments to keep your cushions from shifting or moving. Snap pockets or snap tabs allow you to easily attach a custom cushion for a secure fit. Although snaps tend to be a reliable and popular option for interior or exterior boat cushion, we can also use Velcro, Keder track, common sense fasteners or other marine hardware depending on the application. Hardware can corrode so it is best to keep it clean and free of dirt and debris.

Foam Cut Outs / Bevels / Odd Shapes – No boat is straight, symmetrical or square. Templating a boat for new cushions is critical. It allows your cushions to fit and function properly around the nooks and crannies of your salon, v-berth or cockpit. Precise cutting, shaping or beveling of the foam create cushions that custom fit your boat. Boats can also be in need of special wedges, knee rolls or even be upholstered to a backer board that attaches to your boat.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Breathable Underlining – Boats are inherently moist. To combat moisture and mold, have your cushions fabricated with a mesh underlining that helps your cushion breathe. This is especially important for cushions on your boat deck because they are more likely to be exposed to moisture. Because most boat cushions are not reversible, a zipper can be sewn on the mesh bottom for easier removal of the cover.

Batting Wrap on Foam – Batting is often applied over foam to prevent slippage and provide a smooth, soft appearance. The thickness (loft) of batting can range from very thin up to an inch thick. Batting is a great option for any interior cushions like V berth or salon seating to plump up your cushions and add softness . It is not often recommended for cockpit or bow cushions as it can retain moisture if it gets wet.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Hinging – Boats have lots of odd storage areas that can be hard to access. You can create a hinge on any cushion. It can be a mock hinge with velcro for full separation or a static hinge that is sewn into the cushion. Hinging can provide flexibility with your seating arrangement or allow for access to hard to reach areas under or behind a cushion.

Piping / Welting – Piping, also known as welting, is a great way to add a little contrast or pizazz to your cushion. It does not serve any major function beyond style and personal choice. .

Buttons / Tufting – Adding buttons or tufting is a personal style choice and works best for fancy applications. It is often not the best choice for a heavily used cushion.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Striped or Patterned Fabric – Striped or patterned fabric can provide a beautiful look and unique feel to your boat.

best sailboat cabin cushions

Boat Backrests – Cockpit backrests can be recovered just like seat cushions, or we can create new ones that are customized to your needs. Backrests are often a wedge, soft fill or just simple throw pillows.

Boat Cushions: The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide

Embarking on a boating journey should be a relaxing experience, void of discomfort. Of course, those hard wooden or plastic seats can make for an uncomfortable ride. This is where a good quality boat cushion comes in, providing you with the comfort you need for a pleasurable and safe trip. And in this guide, we’ll go over the most essential features you should keep in mind as you shop.

The material of the boat cushion plays a huge role in its durability and comfort. It should be weather-resistant to withstand the harsh marine environment. Look for fabrics that resist UV rays, as constant exposure to the sun can cause fading and weakening. Synthetic materials like polyester and vinyl are excellent choices, as they are hardy and easy to clean. The cushion fill should also be dense and resilient, offering maximum comfort while retaining its shape over time.

Water Resistance

A boat is an environment where water is a constant companion. Therefore, your boat cushions should have superior water resistance. Go for cushions that repel water or have quick-drying features. This ensures that even if they get wet, they won’t stay soggy for long, keeping you comfortable throughout your ride. Also, this feature prevents mildew and mold, extending the cushion’s lifespan.

Non-Slip Bottom

A moving boat can cause the cushions to slide around, which can be irritating and unsafe. A non-slip bottom will keep the cushion in place, providing stability and safety. Some boat cushions even come with straps or snaps to secure them to the seat, while others have a rubber bottom that grips the seat. Opt for the one that suits your needs and offers the best grip.

While the practical aspects are essential, the primary purpose of a boat cushion is comfort. So look for cushions that provide ample padding and support whether you need it on your seat or out in the water.

Maintenance

Boat cushions will inevitably get dirty, so easy maintenance is a must. Removable covers that can be machine-washed are a lifesaver. Some materials are also stain-resistant, which means they’re easy to wipe clean.

US Coast Guard Approval

When choosing a boat cushion, don’t forget to check that it has U.S. Coast Guard approval. This certification guarantees that the cushion meets stringent safety standards for buoyancy and durability, making it a reliable flotation aid in emergencies. Approved cushions not only enhance your safety but also comply with legal requirements, preventing potential fines during inspections.

People Also Asked

Yes, most boat cushions are designed to be waterproof to withstand marine environments. But, it's advisable to cover them or bring them inside during heavy rains or when not in use to prolong their lifespan.

To clean your boat cushions, use mild soap and warm water. For tougher stains, you may use a fabric cleaner, but always ensure that it's safe for the material of your cushions. Try to avoid bleach or harsh chemicals as these can damage the padding or fabric.

To maintain your boat cushions, clean them regularly and protect them from harsh elements when not in use. If possible, store them in a dry and cool place. It's also advisable to inspect them regularly for any signs of wear or damage for early replacements.

Boat cushions can develop mildew if they're constantly exposed to moisture and not allowed to dry completely. To prevent this, make sure to dry out your cushions after use or if they get wet. Consider cushions with anti-mold or mildew-resistant properties for added protection.

While you can use regular cushions, it's advisable to use cushions designed for boats as they are made with materials that can withstand exposure to water, UV rays, and marine environments. Regular cushions may not last as long and may not provide the same level of comfort. And keep in mind that you need to have a US Coast Guard-approved cushion on board for added safety if your boat is 16 feet or longer.

A comfortable boat cushion typically has a good thickness and firmness. It should provide enough support to prevent discomfort during long periods of sitting. The material should be soft to the touch but durable enough for water use.

Foam for Boat Cushions: Choosing the Best Material for Your Marine Needs

  • Boat Cushions
  • Closed Cell Foam
  • Sunbrella Covers

What is the Best Foam for Marine Cushions and Seats?

When you’re heading out to catch fish, tow wakeboarders or just spend a few hours de-stressing away from land, a good set of boat cushions will make everyone more comfortable. But with constant exposure to saltwater and sun, you’ll need special marine foam that can withstand the elements.

In our boat cushion foam guide, we look at some of the options for ordering marine seat cushions and back cushions. If you need new or replacement cushions, FoamOrder.com can make them to order here in the U.S. We also sell foam sheets and other supplies for making your own cushions.

Types of Boat Cushion Foam

There are several marine foam options depending on how you are using the cushions and where they are located. Let’s review each to determine when they are appropriate:

Reticulated Open-Cell Foam

Also known as outdoor foam , this high-use foam is the best choice if you want thick, plush cushions like those on your indoor furniture. The open-cell design lets water quickly and thoroughly drain from the foam so it dries quickly, reducing the chances of mold, mildew and odor. Reticulated foam comes in several firmness levels based on your comfort preferences and the cushion thickness. It’s also very resistant to heat and impacts. Our high-resiliency outdoor foam has a density of 1.8 lb./ft.³, which is significantly more durable than the industry standard.

Closed-Cell Foam

There are many closed-cell foam styles, including EVA foam, Flotex and Volara foam. Each of these low-profile waterproof foams block moisture so it rolls off the surface, which is excellent for flotation devices. They form a tight seal to prevent water from getting between the foam and the furniture. Some of these foams are also good for soundproofing and absorbing engine vibrations, meaning a quieter, smoother ride. The downside is that, since this foam is generally thinner and firmer than open-cell foam, it may not be as comfortable to sit on for long periods. Layering soft open-cell foam over rigid closed-cell foam is an option if you want both comfort and soundproofing.

Various sheets of closed-cell foam.

This is an eco-friendly option for boat cabins, sleeping berths, and other below-deck spaces that aren’t directly exposed to Mother Nature. Our 100% natural latex cushions are made using sap from rubber trees, offering a soft and springy feel for maximum comfort. However, although latex is technically an open-cell foam, it does not drain as well as reticulated outdoor foam. Therefore, latex boat cushions should only be put in cockpits and other unprotected areas if they have a waterproof cover.

Marine Cushion Cover Fabrics

You’ll also need an appropriate cover for your new cushion cover. We recommend Sunbrella® fabrics or Nautilus marine-grade vinyl . Indoor/outdoor Sunbrella® material is water-resistant, UV-resistant and stain-resistant, and it comes in many colors and patterns, making it a stylish choice for boat cushion designs. If you frequently use your vessel or encounter extreme conditions, waterproof Nautilus marine vinyl has the best resistance to harsh weather and abrasions.

Frank C wrote: ... Yours is an interesting question, but I doubt you'll hear much advice. That's because few here (I think) have ever committed the investment to purchase closed-cell cushions. It follows then, that fewer still will have your problem of expensive cushions suffering from old-age. I have a single closed-cell cushion, the helm-hump from C-Cushions. But having invested 150 bucks or so, it's stored in the cabin, suffering no significant UV exposure. I can't imagine exactly how they manage to apply such a durable coating, but also can't imagine there will be an easy, backyard alternative. Please be sure to post your solution.
