S/Y Black Pearl Captain On the World's Greenest Superyacht

By Jenna Mehdi

The iconic 106.7m Oceanco superyacht Black Pearl has been dubbed the greenest and most technologically advanced sailing yacht in the world, not to mention the largest. We caught up with Black Pearl’s Captain Justin Christou to hear more about the innovative features and practices of the yacht justifying this title, and the remarkable benchmark she is serving to the yachting industry and beyond.

When we catch Justin on the phone on a grey Friday afternoon, the captain is enjoying a quiet moment amidst an intense few days at the Damen ship repair yard in Vlissingen. With Black Pearl due back in the water in just a couple of days and preparations set for the Owner to come onboard, Justin 's enthusiasm is already tangible as we begin our conversation.

‘One of the things we love doing most, after sailing Black Pearl, is talking about her, ’ he says. Justin has spent the last two and a half years at the helm of Black Pearl with his co-Captain Chris Gartner, an experience he describes after an illustrious career sailing everything from classic yachts to motor yachts as ‘the feather in the cap’.

The first topic on the agenda is fuel saving. Known for her ability to sail transatlantic without a drop of fuel, Justin is full of praise for the Black Pearl’s acclaimed Dynarig sail system. ‘These rigs are amazing. We don’t have these large triangular main sails which are near impossible to reef unless you have all hands on deck. When we’re sailing, we put sails in and out almost hourly - it’s unbelievable.’

The benefits of the Dynarig go far beyond ease of use, however. ‘What that means is we’re constantly sailing with the perfect sail plan for wind conditions,’ Justin goes on. ‘We’re never hemmed in by our sail plan to be forced to turn the engine on.’

The significance of this is huge, allowing the sailing yacht to reach her full potential regardless of conditions. And in case of long stretches of light weather, Black Pearl has a backup plan.

The superyacht makes use of an intelligent regeneration system by trailing propellers in the water and producing electricity through the gear box. ‘In essence it’s a shaft generator. As we’re sailing we can use that electricity to run the house load, or if there is more we can use it to charge the Energy Storage System (ESS).’

The result is that Black Pearl can claim to be entirely self-sufficient. Regenerating energy to run onboard operations or propel the yacht in the case of light wind conditions, there is virtually no need to use a drop of fuel thanks to a highly intelligent Energy Management System (EMS).

The Owner’s insistence on sustainability as an in-built feature is apparent throughout. Not only is Black Pearl able to produce enough energy to run fully self-sustainably, not a drop of that energy is wasted. A comprehensive heat recovery system has been designed to convert excess heat from systems such as the generators and main engines to elsewhere on the yacht. ‘ We take the heat from any system that produces it, run it through the system and use it for a multitude of different things, from heating accommodation to the jacuzzi and showers.’

Incredibly though, it does not stop there. Justin and his crew are vigilant in their efforts to implement greener practices onboard Black Pearl, from a strict zero policy towards single-use plastics to the trialling of new ‘eco-products’. ‘Where we can, we use the highest concentrate and largest size containers available,’ he explains. ‘ The interior team recently went to an Ecover store - they take all of our containers and refill everything down there.’

‘The products themselves are also all proven to be friendly to marine life. We have a zero discharge sewage treatment plant onboard which is sensitive to PH levels and chemicals. The cleaning products we use have to be friendly to the sewage treatment plant and ultimately the environment.’

Evidently Black Pearl’s operations are in safe, sustainable hands. We were curious to know whether Justin had a sense of the same approach from elsewhere in the industry.

‘One thing we really see is marinas being super keen to recycle,’ he says. ‘It’s great when a marina gets a hold of us and wants us in their marina because they’re trialling their new green practices.’

Justin tells us of one traditionally commercial facility in Amsterdam, Eggerding Terminal, where the yacht passed through just last week. The facility, which has recently installed over 7000 solar panels to power its new shore power system, has traditionally catered to commercial ships but is looking to capitalise on the growing strength of Amsterdam’s refit sector by appealing to large yachts. ‘ They were super enthusiastic to have us hooked up to their shore power system. It’s a huge statement to say not only are we green, but we’re attracting greener vessels too .’

Delivered by renowned shipyard Oceanco in 2018, Black Pearl certainly serves as the finest form of validation for the sustainable agenda. But has the superyacht inspired real change amongst other owners in the industry?

‘We are constantly getting calls from captains whose owners are interested in refitting their old sail boats or building new sailboats. They want to know if they can exchange their battery banks for our lightweight ESS, how it is integrated in and so on.’

‘But what is really exciting is bridging the gap between industries. We have heard from the likes of Greenpeace as well as freight ships, to see how the Dynarigs work and if they are feasible for them. ’

The significance of this, that Black Pearl can ‘give back’ to the commercial industry for which the Dynarig was first designed, holds meaning for our entire industry. The owner himself, Justin adds, is extremely invested in this goal.

The example set by Black Pearl would never have been possible without the ambitions of her visionary Owner, as well as his realistic understanding of compromise. ‘ He’s built a green vessel and he wants to operate it as such, ’ says Justin. ‘When we have direction of where to go next, the time given for us to do it is very generous. He realises as a sailing ship we’re at the mercy of the wind gods, and will encourage us as much as possible not to turn the engines on. ’

‘It’s taken a lot of hard work from a number of key players, ’ Justin adds. ‘ Derek Munro from Divergent Yachting has managed the build from day one, for example, and still works very closely with us to ensure Black Pearl is the industry leader in green practices.’

Of course, the example set by Black Pearl would never have been possible without serious effort and research from a host of dedicated players such as  Moran Yacht & Ship , involved at the start of the project, who participated in implementing the green technologies of the yacht.

This attitude of hard work and dedication has come to define the team at the helm of Black Pearl. Justin and his crew are not interested in the easiest or quickest means of getting the job done, firm in the knowledge that setting an example requires intelligent solutions and determination. It is testament to the owner’s vision and Captain and crew belief in it that Black Pearl continues to be such a wide-reaching source of inspiration today.

"We take the heat from any system that produces it, run it through the system and use it for a multitude of different things, from heating accommodation to the jacuzzi and showers." Justin Christou, Captain S/Y Black Pearl

World’s largest sailing yacht ‘Black Pearl’ arrives in the Mediterranean

By Oliver Pearson   27 March 2018

Delivered on Friday 16 March, the 107m/350ft sailing yacht ‘Black Pearl’ from Oceanco arrived in the Mediterranean earlier today.

Currently holding the title of world’s largest sailing superyaht, Black Pearl looked triumphant as she made her way to the Mediterranean today.

The result of a fascinating design phase, Black Pearl began life as a concept drawn up by Ken Freivokh in 2010. Codenamed Nautilus, the concept utilised the DynaRig technology engineered by Dykstra Naval Architects and made famous by the 88m/289ft sailing yacht ‘Maltese Falcon’  built by Perini Navi.

In 2012, the Dutch shipyard Oceanco were selected as the builders, bringing in Italian designers Nuvolari Lenard who made a series of changes to the exterior and interior styling to transform her into the sailing yacht we see today.

With such incredible designers playing vital roles in her design, it is unsurprising that Black Pearl has emerged with a unique identity that can be heralded as a landmark moment in the history of sailing yachts.

Indeed, her sleek black-painted steel hull is completed by the huge logo emblazoned on her central mast, making her unlike any other superyacht out on the water right now.

Due to the highly secretive nature of her development phases, there are currently no published images of her interior spaces. It has been confirmed, however, that the collaborative design continued inside and Ken Freivokh, Nuvolari Lenard and Villate Design each had a hand in shaping the look and feel of the social and guest spaces.

As the world’s largest sailing yacht, Black Pearl is sure to cause a sensation in the Mediterranean

Demonstrated by the above images, the DynaRig clearly possesses the same kind of power and performance of the legendary Maltese Falcon. A technology which was dreamed up in the 1960s, it wasn’t until the 21st century that advanced building techniques made it possible to implement the DynaRig on board superyachts.

Greatly improving the efficiency and precision of a vessel, the technology allows a single person to control the angle of the sails by rotating the freestanding masts. Forming a single panel when angled together, the sails ultimately enhance the overall capabilities of the yacht.

What truly distinguishes Black Pearl from her the Perini Navi icon is the unusual reverse bow that was born out of the original concepts and the talents at Oceanco.

Altogether, Black Pearl is truly deserving of her status as a new born legend, and her significance is sure to be felt for many more years to come.

Drive The Boat: A Rich History Of Black Sailing Groups In The U.S.

The popularity for sailing in the black community is growing, putting these historic clubs in the spotlight and proving that there ain't nothing we can't do

Leah Freeman-Haskin • Aug 2, 2019

It’s not every day that you hear about black yacht clubs and sailing groups, but the popularity for sailing within the Black community is growing, putting these historic clubs in the spotlight. From Chicago to Washington D.C., these for-us, by-us groups are proving that there ain’t nothing we can’t do.

Black Chicago Sailors

The Black Chicago Sailors is the largest virtual group of black sailors of both men and women in the country —cruising and racing. Founder Pam Rice says, “knowing how difficult it would be to nail down sailors and free-spirits, I decided that a ‘virtual’ organization would work best…no meetings, no dues, just sharing each other’s company.”

Although the Black Chicago Sailors group is handled virtually, Jackson Park Yacht Club in Chicago, is said to have the largest community of black sailors in the country. The club has 400 members, 300 of which are African American. In recent years, the Jackson Park Yacht Club has focused hard on outreach, including affordable sailing lessons for adults – and even a free sailing camp for kids.

Universal Sailing Club

Universal Sailing Club (USC) was founded in 2001 by sailors Marcus Asante and Michael Campbell. These men gathered other African American sailors on the Chesapeake Bay, primarily from Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. The USC maintains a historically black sailing presence on the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the world. As the popularity of sailing grows within black communities, the club has recently expanded to include sailors from around the country and abroad.

The club organizes on-the-water sailing activities, raft-ups, and cruising getaways both locally and around the world including excursions throughout the Seychelles Islands and the Mediterranean.

Originally founded for African Americans to share culture and camaraderie while sailing, USC welcomes all sailors that express interest in aligning with its powerful mission and vision.

Seafarers Yacht Club

The Seafarers Yacht Club has a rich history as one of the oldest black yacht clubs in the United States. Founded in 1959, when many Chesapeake Bay marinas would not let black boaters gas up at their piers, and yacht clubs were closed to black captains, a group of working-class black men banded together in the face of discrimination and founded the Seafarers Yacht Club.

Today, their mission is to foster educational, recreational, charitable, cultural, historical and environmental knowledge and activities relative to boating.  Seafarers is a private organization of boaters and requires an application to become a member.  Membership includes access to some of the perks including a robust calendar of events including holiday clubhouse dinners and jazz festivals.

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Italian media are reporting that prosecutors are investigating shipwreck and manslaughter.

Sky News understands that this line of investigation is standard procedure in complex cases such as these.

Italian authorities are expected to reveal further information about their investigation tomorrow in a news conference.

A statement from Oxford University says it is "greatly saddened" by the death of Hannah Lynch.

The 18-year-old was enrolled to study English at the prestigious university this year after receiving her A-Level results earlier this month.

The statement reads: "The University is greatly saddened by the tragic death of Hannah Lynch, who held a confirmed place to study English at Trinity College from this autumn.

"Trinity and the English Faculty had been looking forward to welcoming Hannah to the University, and we offer our deepest sympathies to her family and friends."

Yesterday, we brought you an interview with a neighbour of the Lynch family, Ruth Leigh.

She lived next door to Mike Lynch, his wife Angela, and their two children for 15 years and told Sky News the family were "well thought of, kind, generous, hospitable people".

In a new interview with Times Radio, Mrs Leigh says that Mike Lynch would always remember the names of her family and ask after them whenever they saw each other.

"He didn't have to do that," she says. "He's a wealthy, influential man. Top of the tree.

"But he was always incredibly humble, full of integrity, very friendly and certainly a really valued member of our community."

Camper and Nicholsons, the company responsible for managing the Bayesian, has sent its "deepest sympathies" to the loved ones of those that died during its sinking.

A statement from the company confirmed the recovery of the six people missing following the boat's foundering on Monday morning and thanked those involved in search and recovery work.

"Those on board were valued colleagues, friends, and clients," the statement says.

"Our deepest sympathies are with their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

"Our focus remains on fully cooperating with the authorities and offering unwavering support to the families affected by this tragic loss."

It added this would be the last public statement from the company on these events as it allows investigators "to understand with better clarity what happened that tragic night".

By Ashna Hurynag , news correspondent

Our first indication that something unusual was happening came just before one this afternoon.

For five days, the search site has always had the presence of at least one vessel there at all times during the day.

So when all five of the search vessels began making their way back to the marina flanking the cream and red search and rescue boat with its crew and divers on board - it was clear they'd found the final body.

A guard of honour of sorts began to assemble on the harbourside - coastguard members, search and rescue squad and police officers stood shoulder to shoulder as the vessel pulled in.

What followed was a process we've become accustomed to seeing over the past 24 hours.

Two divers at the back of the boat secure the body bag between them and it's lifted into the arms of the search and rescue officials waiting on the dock.

A crowd watching on opposite watch in silence - the realisation of what's happening, dawning on them.

Carefully, the body is loaded into the back of a waiting ambulance - people surround it to shield it from view as much as possible.

The ambulance doors shut, the sirens are turned on and as we have seen five times before - it speeds off to the mortuary escorted by two police cars.

The crew who have spent days searching watch on in silence.

Their job is over, finally the families of the missing that had been in limbo and trying to comprehend the unknown - can now have some closure.

After five days of searching, every passenger and crew member on board the boat has now been accounted for.

The final body was discovered and recovered from the shipwreck today, with Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of British tycoon Mike Lynch, the last of six people missing after the sinking.

The Italian coastguard has now said search and rescue operations have officially concluded, with authorities now switching to "investigation mode" (see 14.00 post).

Watch footage of the operation below...

A little earlier, a marine investigator told Sky News the yacht may have to be lifted off the seabed as part of the probe.

Now Nick Sloane, who led the operation to recover the Costa Concordia cruise liner that sank in 2012, says it would cost up to €15m (£12.7m) to salvage the Bayesian.

He told daily La Repubblica the operation would take six to eight weeks including preparation work.

Mr Sloane, a South Africa engineer, said it would have to be completed by mid-October, without specifying the reasons for the timing.

He said platforms would be built and a ten day operation would take place involving cranes and 40 divers.

Bringing the yacht to the surface will have to be done "very, very slowly", and might take a couple of days alone, he said.

"The ship has to be recovered as it is, in one piece, trying to keep it intact as much as possible."

Search and rescue operations have officially concluded, the coast guard has said.

Authorities will now switch to a methodical and meticulous  "investigation mode", marine investigator James Wilkes told Sky News.

They may need to remove the yacht from the seabed, both for safety of navigation and to glean more information about its sinking, he says.

Investigators will gather and scrutinise data, analyse facts, and assess witness statements, adds Mr Wilkes.

"They'll be trying to avoid getting entangled in the narratives that have been surrounding the incident over the last few days.

"The witness statements will be critical, very critical in this situation because they were there, they saw it, they experienced it.

"They knew firsthand what was happening. They will be able to explain their actions."

Inspectors will also assess meteoritical and oceanographic information to understand the storm.

All the investigators involved will have undertaken these probes before, he adds.

"At 50m it should be possible to survey the hull of the vessel quite straightforwardly, particularly using remote operating vehicles."

But if they bring the yacht to the surface, then "it's likely you'll be able to get to more information, see more of the yacht".

Search and rescue teams previously described the yacht as akin to "an 18-storey building" due to the weight of the water.

A spokesperson for the Lynch family has released a statement.

"The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends.

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy.

"They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue.

"Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief."

More tributes have come in now for Hannah's father, Mike Lynch, whose body was recovered yesterday.

Close friend Andrew Kanter called him "the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known".

"There is simply no other UK technology entrepreneur of our generation who has had such an impact on so many people.

"His passion for life, knowledge and all those around him was instantly inspiring to everyone he met, and he will be sorely missed."

Sushovan Hussain, a colleague and friend of Mr Lynch since school, said he and his wife were "utterly devastated by the deaths of so many of our dear friends".

"His departure leaves an unfillable hole in my life. We have known Hannah since her birth, and for her to be taken on the precipice of her life is cruel beyond belief.

"Our hearts bleed for Angela and her remaining daughter."

On board with Dr Mohammed Al Barwani, owner of Black Pearl-builder Oceanco

Related articles.

A life-long love of the sea led Dr Mohammed Al Barwani to acquire not just one but two major shipyards, Oceanco and Turquoise Yachts. He tells BOAT about balancing the business of yachting and life on board his own 32m motor yacht in Oman...

“I remember building a small boat from planks of wood when I was a kid. My friends and I carried the boat to the sea but as soon as we put that thing in the water it sank and all my friends walked away,” says Dr Mohammed Al Barwani with a wry smile. Thankfully his shipbuilding has gone better than his raft building, as he is now the owner of Dutch yard Oceanco and the major investor in Turkey’s Turquoise Yachts .

“I’ve always lived by the sea, and I have always loved the sea. I remember going fishing when I was about six and it was me that got hooked,” he explains as we take respite from a hectic Monaco Yacht Show in the Yacht Club de Monaco. However, despite being a lifelong owner of various boats – ranging from a Laser sailing dinghy to his current 32-metre Hatteras motor yacht – it wasn’t until 2010 that the Omani businessman, who is founder and chairman of MB Holding Group, became involved with the industry from a business perspective.

“It was during the financial crisis, and I was visiting Oceanco hoping to find an abandoned project,” he explains. “I didn’t find a project, but the owner at the time wanted to sell and do something else. I was impressed by the people I saw; I was impressed by the cleanliness of the shipyard, and I thought maybe we should get into this.” Taking on a shipyard during the economic uncertainties of the period was undoubtedly a gamble, but it paid off. “We were very lucky because soon after the financial crisis the business came back. We acquired it in April 2010; in 2010 we didn’t sell any boats, but in 2011 we sold three boats.”

Over the past decade Oceanco has been behind some extraordinary and innovative yachts – including 106.7-metre sailing yacht Black Pearl , 110-metre Kaos (formerly Jubilee ) and 90-metre DAR . “I am proud of every yacht that we have produced; we produce beautiful yachts,” he says. Dr Al Barwani keeps in regular contact with the management but only visits the yard every couple of months. “When I took over, I gave freedom to the management to do what they want to do. I have a final ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but it is the management that is driving it. I enjoy it, it’s not work, it is more of a pleasure.”

In 2015 Dr Al Barwani decided to expand his investment in the superyacht industry further, acquiring a majority stake in Turquoise Yachts. “I thought at the time, and I still do, that Turquoise has a lot of potential for growth. Turkey has been growing as an industrial country and Turquoise was also growing. Since we acquired it, the company has come some way,” he says.

On the eve of Monaco Yacht Show, Turquoise announced the sale of its largest project to date – an 87-metre custom superyacht named Project Vento. This project sits at the top end of the sweet spot that Dr Al Barwani would like the yard to focus on. “We want to concentrate on yachts from 55 metres to about 90 metres,” he explains. “The 40-metre range is too demanding, and we can’t make money there.”

Dr Al Barwani has owned his current 32-metre Hatteras for 12 years and predominantly keeps the yacht in Muscat. When the weather is good, he often hosts meetings on the aft deck in the marina, ordering in food from the local restaurants. “It’s nice for my clients because instead of being in an office and talking business, we are out on a boat.” But when it comes to the weekends it is all about family. “I have eleven grandchildren, we could start a football team, they are my pride and joy,” he says. “On the weekends we all go out on the boat to relax. I may go for a half an hour dive and the kids enjoy being on the jet skis or the sea bobs.”

His favourite cruising spot is the Daymaniyat Islands, situated less than 20 nautical miles from Muscat. Comprising nine small islands, the nature reserve is famous for its hawksbill and green turtles. “The islands are beautiful,” he says. “I have scuba-dived in a lot of places, but for me Daymaniyat is one of the best diving spots in the world.”

He is passionate that more yachts should come and experience the Omani coastline for themselves. “Oman has a lot to offer, you will be alone on a beautiful beach, the islands are unspoilt and clean. It is just one of the best places to be,” he says. “Going back a few years ago there were a lot of yachts coming into the Indian Ocean but then unfortunately piracy came up and the yachts stopped coming. Now the yachts are coming again, but the problem is there are no facilities and services. It is a chicken-and-egg situation.”

As well as diving, Dr Al Barwani’s other passion while on board is photography. “I inherited the interest from my father. I still travel with a camera – I have three or four of them, but unfortunately my smartphone is taking over,” he says. “I take photos of anything, passing yachts, the sea, the kids. All of my photos are on my phone or the cloud, at my last count there were more than 20,000 pictures.”

With his football team of grandchildren, it’s perhaps not surprising that Dr Al Barwani has considered upsizing to an Oceanco. “We started building a 90-metre on spec and I got the kids to come to the keel-laying ceremony and then a year down the line someone wanted to buy it,” he says. “It has actually happened a couple of times and now the kids are saying, ‘Grandfather, we don’t want to do that anymore because you keep on selling them!’”

Having failed to build his own yacht (without selling it in the process), Dr Al Barwani now has his sights on a 70-metre and has a new plan. “I may consider buying a used Oceanco or Turquoise,” he explains. “A lot of these boats have a life that could go on forever. I would buy a 15- or 20-year-old boat, take it back to the yard to get it refitted and make it more environmentally friendly. It would come back out as a new boat.”

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for both yards Dr Al Barwani is involved with. “There is definitely a move towards conservation of energy, conservation of the environment and recycling of materials,” he says. “The clients are driving it, the public are driving it but the regulations are also driving it. There will be ports in future where you can’t go in unless your boat meets certain minimum emissions.”

There are of course multiple hybrid and green fuel solutions hitting the market, but Dr Al Barwani also thinks there might be a simpler solution. “There is nothing cleaner than building a sailboat; for 3,000 years there have been sailboats and for 3,000 years they haven’t polluted the oceans.” Oceanco has increased the number of sailing yachts it is producing, and there is currently a 127-metre vessel under construction at the yard . “Ten years ago, we were not building sailboats; now we are probably the leading builder of large sailboats,” he adds.

Aside from his involvement in the superyacht industry Dr Al Barwani’s career has predominantly been based in oil and gas and he sees a lot of similarities between the two. “Oil and gas are a very disciplined area. Because of the accidents that have happened historically it has evolved to be very safety-conscious,” he explains. “It has given me a discipline to look first thing into the safety of anything and obviously safety comes along with environmental issues and sustainability.”

Aside from his oil and gas assets, he also has business interests in banking, insurance, engineering and hospitality. The latter includes several resorts in Oman. “I think there’s a similarity between building yachts and building hotels. A yacht is basically a floating hotel,” he says. One of his daughters looks after Dr Al Barwani’s hospitality business and his other children are also involved in different areas of MB Holding Group. “Some have more interest in the oil and gas and some take more interest in the shipbuilding.”

With the next generation continuing his legacy, at some stage Dr Al Barwani might finally find the time to visit his dream destination. “I have dreamt of going to Raja Ampat for a long time. I have read everything about it, I have watched all the movies about it. It is the place at the top of my bucket list,” he reveals. However, he has very set ideas on what type of yacht he wants to visit the Indonesian archipelago on, and it isn’t made of wood. “I want to go on a nice yacht built by one of my two shipyards,” he says. “As soon as I get my future yacht, I will be there.”
