Entries Open for the 20th Suffolk Yacht Harbour Classic Regatta

Suffolk Yacht Harbour Classic Regatta

Suffolk Yacht Harbour (SYH), located on the River Orwell in Suffolk, has announced entries are now open for its annual Classic Regatta.  Taking place from 10 th – 12 th June, the regatta is celebrating its 20 th anniversary this year.

SYH managing director Jonathan Dyke commented, “After a fantastic post-Covid comeback last year, the SYH Classic Regatta is in great shape going into its 20 th anniversary.  The classic sailing and motor yacht scene on the east coast is thriving, and we look forward to welcoming boats from across the UK to join the celebrations.”

The regatta race programme offers an optional Friday evening race leading a competitive yet friendly three-race series for fast, slow and Stella classes over the weekend.

Classic motor boats will once again be welcomed to the regatta after their successful integration last year.  A motor boat ‘parade of power’ will take place on Saturday afternoon, with owners and guests invited to join the social scene ashore throughout the weekend.

On-the-water action will be complemented by socialising in the SYH marina and at Haven Ports Yacht Club onboard a restored LV87 lightship.  As usual, boats will be berthed together to create a lively atmosphere and encourage the shared appreciation of beautifully restored and maintained classic yachts.

Regatta attendees will be spoilt for choice when it comes to food, with freshly cooked breakfasts, homemade café treats, and wood-fired pizzas all on offer.  A regatta party and live music on Saturday evening will ensure the regatta celebrates its 20-year anniversary in style.

Jonathan Dyke continued, “Suffolk Yacht Harbour has a long association with classic yachts, going back to Stella designer Kim Holman (one of the harbour’s original founding directors).  With classic yacht maintenance facilities in the workshops and the Classic Marine chandlery onsite, SYH is well-equipped to assist classic yacht owners in the lead up to, during and after the regatta.”

Owner of Spirit 52 Flight of Ufford and founder of Spirit Yachts, Sean McMillan said, “There is something quite magical about racing on the east coast.  The welcome here is quite extraordinary; Jonathan puts so much effort into the whole thing.  It’s run on a very Corinthian spirit and the manners on the racetrack are rather wonderful.  It’s at that fantastic time of year when everyone is full of enthusiasm for the season to come; I wouldn’t miss it.”

Founded in 2002, the regatta is the largest event of its kind for classic yachts on the east coast and attracts a fleet of both local and visiting sailors from as far afield as the Channel Islands.

Entry criteria for the regatta requires yachts to be either pre-1970 design of traditional construction, Bermuda or gaff rigged and built of wood or steel.  Modern classic yachts with wooden or steel hulls are also welcome.  Visit www.syhclassicregatta.co.uk for online entry and further details.

Entry Open for the 2024 Suffolk Yacht Harbour Classic Regatta

jonathan dyke suffolk yacht harbour

Suffolk Yacht Harbour (SYH), located on the River Orwell in Suffolk, has announced entries are

now open for its annual Classic Regatta.  Taking place from 14th – 16th June, the regatta has built a strong reputation for its well-organised racing and relaxed, social scene.

Founded in 2002, the SYH Classic Regatta welcomes both sailing and motor yachts for a weekend on the water and socialising ashore.  Entry criteria for the regatta requires yachts to be either pre-1970 design of traditional construction, Bermuda or gaff rigged and built of wood or steel.  Modern classic yachts with wooden or steel hulls are also welcome.  Following on from the successful inclusion of Deben Cherubs last year, the regatta will host a class for the Cherubs with racing into the River Stour and Orwell estuaries.

SYH Chairman Jonathan Dyke commented, “For many people, the regatta kick starts their racing and cruising season; it’s become an institution in the classic yacht calendar.  We welcome experienced racers and those who are on the water for the fun of it.  We’re looking forward to welcoming back our regular yachts and plenty of new faces too.”

The regatta race programme offers an optional Friday evening race ahead of a three-race series for fast, slow, Stella, and Deben Cherub classes over the weekend.

Classic motor boats separated into fast and slow classes will once again be welcomed to the regatta.  A ‘parade of power’ will take place on Saturday afternoon, with owners and guests invited to join the socialising throughout the weekend.

SYH Managing Director Joshua Major said, “The regatta is the perfect opportunity to showcase the thriving classic boat community on the east coast.  From a strong contingent of Fairey Marine boats to older classics large and small, the fleet is a varied and stunning spectacle on the water and all berthed together at SYH.”

On-the-water action is complemented by socialising in the SYH marina and at Haven Ports Yacht Club onboard a restored LV87 lightship.  Yachts are berthed together to create a festival-style atmosphere and encourage the shared appreciation of beautifully restored and maintained classic yachts.

Regatta guests have the choice of freshly cooked breakfasts, homemade café treats, and a variety of dinner options.  A regatta party and live music on Saturday evening are also a highlight.

SYH CHANDLERY NOW OPEN

Jun 15, 2020 | News

jonathan dyke suffolk yacht harbour

It has been fantastic to see SYH buzzing again in recent weeks as we continue the phased re-opening of the site in line with government guidance.  Thank you to all visitors who are respecting social distancing and the various Covid-19 related measures in place. Following the Government’s announcement that all non-essential retail can re-open from today, 15th June, I am pleased to say the SYH chandlery and Classic Marine are now open to the public.  The number of people in each outlet at any one time will be limited and there is signage in place to advise on social distancing and a one-way system.  Perspex screens have also been installed.   Where possible, please continue to phone the chandlery (01473 659 465) with any product queries and to pre-order in advance.  The ‘click and collect’ service is still operating for those who would prefer. The boatyard and boat movement teams are fully operational and lead times for new projects are continually being reduced.  We welcome any new enquiries via the contact details at the bottom of this email. All Covid-19 measures remain under review and following the recent easing of restrictions, trollies are now back on the pontoons.  Please use these responsibly; we recommend wearing gloves and/or applying hand sanitiser before and after use.  Shower facility key pads remain disabled for the time being.  The additional security will remain in place, but again this will be reviewed as things evolve. We are hopeful that boat owners will soon be able to stay onboard overnight, which will permit unrestricted movement around coastal waters.  I know many of you are eager to commence summer cruising plans, so we will make an announcement soon as the green light is given. The  SYH website ,  Facebook  and  Instagram  pages will continue to be regularly updated with all the latest news for berth holders and visitors. Thank you for your ongoing support and please stay safe. All the best, Jonathan Read the full SYH COVID-19 guidance document here   If you have any queries, please contact the SYH team:  01473 659 465 or  [email protected]  or VHF Channel 80
