Yacht Price

1976 32' rival | 32 ft., us$ 14,750   /  price drop: us$14,250, description.

Saga II has made many ocean passages and performed very well being both fast and comfortable with top quality sea manners. She has beat larger boats on light air ocean passages and sailed during gales when other boats were hove to. Easy for man or woman to operate without the overwhelming forces found on larger boats but at the same time giving you an immense feeling of safety due to its design and construction. No other country built boats as well as the English in the 70's due to Lloyd's demands for quality construction. To sail a Rival is to sail a "real boat"... not one built to a price. Rivals were built for the oceans...local or far away. Saga II is far more comfortable than most boats her size and larger due to her attention to the important details. Many boats are fancier but few will stand the test of time like a Rival. Add the boatyard modified contemporary keel shape and a newly rebuilt Volvo Penta 3-cyl. engine with zero hours  and she will out perform all other Rival 32's on the market.

Review of Rival 32

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 7 berths, a galley and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Rival 32 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.42 - 1.52 meter (4.66 - 4.96 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Rival 32 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD2 diesel engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Rival 32 is 1.71, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Rival 32 is about 147 kg/cm, alternatively 826 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 147 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 826 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.18

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 24m 2 (258 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 9.7 m(31.8 feet)12 mm(1/2 inch)
Genoa sheet9.7 m(31.8 feet)12 mm(1/2 inch)
Mainsheet 24.2 m(79.6 feet)12 mm(1/2 inch)

Broker's Comments

The Rival 32 is a classic sailing yacht designed by Peter Brett. Introduced in the 1970s, Rivals travel far and wide and are known for their seaworthiness and cruising capabilities.

She features a moderate displacement hull, a comfortable interior layout with sleeping for 5. Rivals are renowned for their reliable sail plan for both offshore and coastal sailing.

This particular model is from 1975 and has stood the test of time well. She has a really nice interior and layout with a bright saloon and sociable seating plan.

When you step on board it is obvious that she is solidly built and a serious boat. She’s a real classic and a lot of boat for the money.

Broker's Comments

The Rival 32 is a solid traditional cruiser, with longish fin keel and skeg hung rudder. The Rival 31, 32 and 34 are very similar, all being very well respected as seagoing cruisers. Many Rivals have made long ocean passages including the 32. Her high, full bow makes her dry and sea kindly and the long fin keel and substantial skeg give her good manners under sail.

There is an active Rival Owners Association.

This example has been in the same ownership since 2000 with many crossings to France. She has clearly been looked after and upgraded over the years. She benefits from a stripped back hull which was professionally re-epoxied in 2005 and found in good order in her last Survey in 2011 This is a Yacht that will be an ideal purchase for a family or crew who wish to sail in a safe and spacious design without spending a great deal of money on a newer vessel. Having just been serviced, sails refurbished and anti-fouled she is ready to sail away, and if looked after will remain a solid investment.

Broker Remarks

The Rival 32 has earned a well-deserved reputation as a great sea boat capable of safe extended cruising. Designed by Peter Brett who was responsible for all of the very successful Rival range, over 200 32's were eventually built most by Marine Construction.'Amante' was the very last Rival 32 built but she had to wait until 1990 for her owner to launch her. She now has a recent Beta 25 engine which has been regularly serviced and has only 470 hours on it. her sails are in good order and include a spinnaker and pole as well as a storm sail which is unused. The cabin is heated by a hot air heating system.  This is a wonderful opportunity to own a really classic, well-found, quality yacht.

Accommodation

The Rival 32 sleeps 5 in two cabins. The saloon has a large folding dining table. The galley has a stainless steel sink and a two-burner, oven and grill, as well as dry storage.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

All 200 hulls were molded by Marine Construction Ltd., but many were finished by Southern Boatbuilding. The design was a longer counter sterned development of the 1967 designed Rival 31, and later evolved into the better-known Rival 34 - although actually more Rival 32s than 34s were built.

for a of 4. must be a bit below 10.00m/32.8".

The first two above are space kings with aft cabins, etc., but their sailing reputation is in the skies. Latter seems rather spacious with an aft .

Financials are of course also important with a twist: being our first , it probably wont be the last: true, the "celebrity" Contessa is expensive but it will be likely easy to sell in case we move on.

Besides space and seaworthyness, is an important factor, here the contessa with its almost 1.7m seems to be more restrictive than the other two (1.4m).
30-12-2017, 10:42
and can they share a .. reason I ask is the Renown is a centre with the aft cabin being the equivalent of 2 quarter berths below and only accessible via the ..

until they grow up. Just realized that some Renowns are rigged as , I'll look for sloops.

I am also looking at a Malo 40h, which is almost design identical to the Renown.

biased, which is why we bought one. The Renown and Rival are dated, the Contessa tiny, wet and I am not keen on the heads forward cabin door arrangement.

For £23k less offer this Mk 2 is a bargain.

As for , I am aiming below a total of 30k£, which includes boat and all needed for . This can be a 30k £ turn-key boat or a 15k £ piece that can be revived on a ~10k budget.

What I am a bit worried about is iron keels, some tend to rust (counterpart of the keel-bolt nightmares of modern keels). AFAIK Rivals and Contessas have lead, Westerly and Moody are iron.

replaced, a 2003 was the original for these yachts. Since its a generation younger the layout has the heads by the cockpit locker rather than forward which I think is a much better layout.

I wouldn't worry about cast iron keels, they will still be cast iron when we have both departed this earth. Each year I grind the odd rusty bit down and slap half a dozen coats of Primocon on followed by antifoul , then go sailing. Occasionally I will strip the whole side of a (I have two) but normally doesn't need this level of .

. Could do with the two 110 AH joining together and adding a separate engine start rather than use one of the 110AH . Could also do with a fresh at the sink as well as the taps, just in case. Say £500. Add another £600 for and say £400 for life jackets, seeping bags etc and she is probably ready to go, after all she sails now in the Scottish Western Isles.

Otherwise it looks quite up together with , engine and . The two GPSs and newish engine suggest the owner wasn't afraid to spend on her.

Did you clock the gate valves and the loose gas cylinder in the on the Malo 40H.

.. centre cockpit ketch and a keel in and ketch versions and assorted internal layouts.
If you look closer you will see that its a scaled up version of the 26ft Westerly Centaur.
The Longbows extra 400 odd lbs is for counterbalancing the taller sloop rig.

with a young family. They were brilliant at the time of their design and early dates, but design has moved on and greatly for the better IMO. Boats aren't built like that any more because they were so restrictive. Sailing abilities were good for their time as was space, but in 50 years even boat design moves on.
You will have much more fun with an F27 with of that age, and if the idea of a worries you, just talk to someone who has had one and ideally beg a ride. I well about 11 years ago leaving Cherbourg in an F27 for the return from a cross-channel with a whole bunch of Contessas and other monohulls and then sitting in our home marina listening to the unfolding dramas of a few of the 'seaworthy' monohulls being pulled in by various life-saving agencies. The F27s are seriously and will look after you.
You can also drive them up the beach for camping and other adventures with young kids without much thought or worry being necessary.
Choosing slow, heavy, cramped boats in the belief that they are somehow better all round is not the way to go IMO.
