Boat of the Week: This Globetrotting Sailing Yacht Gets Power From 646 Square Feet of Solar Panels

Path is a sailing superyacht designed to travel around the world

The owner of Baltic’s new 146, Path , had his sights set on global adventure, taking his children and grandkids along for the ride. He wanted a sustainable, comfortable family home that could travel the world. His original plans called for “exceptional living space above and below decks”—not something sailing yachts, often with narrow beams and massive rigs, are known for. That becomes even more challenging when these boats have to perform as powerful, ocean-going vessels.

“He bought the second hull in our Baltic 112 range six years ago, with the concept of sailing around the world with his family,” Henry Hawkins, Baltic CEO, told Robb Report . “With that, he filled a little black book with all of his ideas and feedback. He liked the way his previous boat sailed, which was designed by Rolf Vrolijk, so when he was ready to build again he pulled Rolf in to work on Path .”

With 35 years of developing racing yachts for the America’s Cup and the TP 52 series, German-based judel/vrolijk & co took on the naval architecture, exterior styling and interior design. For its part, Baltic set about planning the build of the third-largest yacht by volume in its 48-year history.

Part of that process involved building full-size mock-ups of the deck salon, covered cockpit and guest accommodations to replicate the boat heeling at 20-degree angles. This helped to get the right ergonomics and safety features, such as handholds and footrests, while guaranteeing plenty of space.

“There were 24 of us aboard for the recent sailing trials and we barely filled the covered cockpit area when we assembled,” said Hawkins.

The twin steering positions in the cockpit have their own protective Biminis. Just forward are positioned 646 square feet of solar panels capable of generating up to 8kW to boost the yacht’s lithium-ion battery bank. The 146-foot carbon composite boat is also Baltic’s first IMO Tier-III compliant yacht, while the owner’s choice of tender extends to an all-electric Torqeedo RIB. A second tender is stowed in a foredeck recess which converts to a swimming pool when at anchor.

Sailing yachts are not known for carrying large collections of water toys, but two Reverso Match sailing dinghies (which disassemble into four parts for easy stowage) are included, along with a lightweight titanium swing anchor arm and a submarine anchor system, hinting at the owner’s intention to explore below the water’s surface, too.

Path is designed to maintain average speeds under sail of between 11 and 16 knots, yet has already clocked speeds in the high 20s during 6,000 miles of shakedown sailing. Three fixed headstays and a detachable bow sprit change the boat from a family cruiser to a competitive racer. A hydraulically lifting keel, which minimizes draft, allows the boat to anchor close to shore.

Internal volume is large enough to accommodate 10 guests and eight crew, along with some nifty gadgets. The amidships owner’s suite features a glass divider combining a television and navigation screen, and a voice-controlled software system works the lights and blinds.

In the en suite is a full-size carbon-fiber bathtub. An 8.8-foot-long video wall in the upper salon plays a whimsical underwater scene. Magnets hidden under the surface of the coffee tables, dining areas and bedside cabinets make matching magnetic plates and glasses sea-safe when under sail.

Margo Vrolijk, who developed the interior décor, looked to the owner’s home for reference, blending teak furniture and woodwork with fabrics and light-colored panels and bulkheads. “The concept is inspired by the how the family lives ashore and we translated that into an easily controlled sailing yacht ,” she said.

“The owner’s achievement in getting the right team around him is a blueprint for how a project like this should be managed,” said Hawkins. “The emphasis with Path is on blue-water performance cruising. Having a powerful sail plan forward means you can step up and down the gears depending on how much breeze there is. The boat’s versatility is testament to the owner’s clear vision from the outset.”

Baltic Yachts 44m Sailing Yacht Path 146

Baltic Yachts 44m Sailing Yacht Path 146 Review

At Home Cruising the Globe or On the Start Line

It is a fact that smooth seas do not make skillful sailors. Just about anyone with a little time on board can sail a boat in a light breeze. But when the wind blows hard, and the waves build large, even expert sailors prefer a responsive boat that is built to endure.

The experienced owner of the Baltic Yachts 2021 launch Path described such a vessel in his brief, asking Baltic to build him a powerful, reliable, uncomplicated, comfortable home, with a go-anywhere office. The design also needed to be easy to sail and maintain, exhibiting all the qualities of a high-performance family sailing yacht. Baltic and the team did it. And they did it beautifully, delivering a yacht that exceeded expectations, ahead of schedule.

The Right Stuff

From the very first vision of his new yacht, the owner began a selection process, putting together a team with the expertise critical to the successful execution of his wishes. In addition to choosing Baltic for the build, he chose Tatiana Kurbatova as his personal representative, judel/vrolijk for the naval architecture, exterior, and interior design, North Sails and superyacht sail designer Heine Sorensen for the sail plan, and A2B Marine Projects’ Sebastian Allebrodt for project management. Baltic’s project management team embraced Patric Brännbacka and Mikael Nyberg for the build.

Baltic EVP Henry Hawkins acknowledged the owner’s choices, commenting, “The owner’s achievement in getting the right team around him has been essential to the success of this project and has culminated in very productive trials involving all the key personnel. It’s a process which has benefitted the crew enormously and is a blueprint for how a project like this should be managed.”

Rolf Vrolijk of judel/vrolijk commenting on the importance of reliability and communication, noted, “The owner was very clear in guiding us in the right direction – after our initial meeting we were invited to dinner at his home and then aboard his previous yacht so that we could accurately translate his thoughts into what he wanted Path to be, including styling and décor.” The owner’s previous yacht was also designed by Rolf, so there was already an established connection that was helpful in designing the layout.

Margo Vrolijk proved instrumental in developing the interior style of the yacht, keeping to the owner’s requests, paralleling taste and decor from his home in a way that would welcome his family on board.

The end result? According to the Baltic Yachts website, very good: “Following 6000 miles of shakedown sailing culminating in successful trials in Palma de Mallorca, the Baltic 146 Path, launched earlier this year, went on to play a central role at the recent Monaco Yacht Show, where she received plaudits from guests and media alike.” Path commanded the attention of Monaco Yacht Show attendees for her large, seamlessly connected deck saloon, covered cockpit boasting a solar array, and chic grey hull trimmed in tangerine.

When Path flies her kite, she is unmistakable, with a matching tangerine sail emblazoned with the path ID: a collection of small circles suggesting the globe, with a line and arrow pointing the way.

What Makes Path Perfect

Creating something simple, with elegant solutions, is hard work. Path became the third largest yacht in terms of internal volume ever built by Baltic throughout its 48-year history. Baltic built full-size mockups of important areas, inclining them 20°, to make sure they got it right.

Testing out areas of the boat in the shed can reveal and correct issues before they become problems. The handholds and foot rests at a 20° heel may not seem important, but when they get tested in a real sailing situation, the life-sized trial run is much appreciated, ensuring things are well-designed and properly placed for access and use. Similarly, the bimini covers for the cockpit and the twin steering stations required intense design studies to achieve comfortable ergonomics with an eye on safety.

First look: Baltic 146 Path

Yachting World

  • October 20, 2021

We take a first look at the stunning bluewater cruiser Path, a Baltic 146 built for an owner who is an experienced cruising sailor and which was recently on show at the Monaco Yacht Show 2021

sailing yacht path price

With speed comes an increasing demand for comfort where modern fast cruising superyachts are concerned. And in the case of Baltic 146 Path , this purposeful new 45m design, there are two key features that really help it stand out as a contemporary performance bluewater cruiser .

First and foremost is that extensive hard bimini, which extends aft from the decksaloon to cover the guest cockpit. It’s a winning feature seen on Baltic Yachts’ latest craft, including the 116 Doryan , the 112 Liara and the DSS foil-equipped 142 Canova . Even the semi-custom 67 is now offered as a PC version with hard bimini.

However, Judel/Vrolijk, Path ’s designer, has taken the concept a step further, stretching the roof while ensuring the structure blends neatly into the long, low lines. The hard top helps form the heart of the Baltic 146, by covering the cockpit and helping to create a vast one-level living area between here and the adjoining decksaloon.

Its upper surface is used to mount a 60m2 solar panel farm, capable of generating 8kW of sustainable power. There’s also a separate bimini for the helm stations.

The second feature of the Baltic 146 to draw the eye is the four headstays. While we’re now accustomed to seeing multiple furling foresails on short-handed raceboats such as IMOCAs and monster trimarans , the common factor here is the ability to handle large sails as easily as possible. In Path ’s case this will allow a small permanent crew to change gear at the push of a button.

It should come as no surprise that Path was commissioned by an experienced cruising sailor and one who enjoys creature comforts too. The full beam owner’s cabin is amidships in the area of least pitching and features a glass divider which doubles as a TV and sailing information screen, plus a carbon fibre bath tub. There’s further accommodation for eight guests and eight crew.

Below the waterline a telescopic keel lifts to reduce draught to 3.4m. A saildrive which can rotate through 340º for ease of manoeuvrability is another system the Finnish yard has employed with success on some of its other recent launches too.

In addition to the tender garage aft, a foredeck well for a 6.5m RIB doubles as a swimming pool when the yacht is at anchor. Path was due to set off on a world cruise following the Monaco show.

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

Two small boats with outboard motors make their way across the water.

By Alan Yuhas

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

Open hatches or doors?

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

The Baltic 146 model is the third-largest hull by volume to be delivered by the shipyard, and S/Y PATH sports a distinctive grey hull with an orange waterline that is matched on her sails. She is designed as a modern bluewater cruising yacht built for comfort, speed and manoeuvrability due in part to her lightweight composite hull and the experienced hand of naval architect judel/vrolijk & co , who also created her interior and exterior styling.

Amongst her notable features is a versatile sail plan designed for a short-handed crew to easily operate, maintaining peak sailing performance in a variety of conditions. The lifting keel reduces the draft from 5.9m/19.4ft to 3.4m/11.2ft, and the forward-facing Saildrive Propulsion System (SPS) can rotate up to 340° for manoeuvrability.

Solar panels across 60m2/645.8ft2 of the coach roof can generate up to 8kW for reduced reliance on fuel. IMO Tier III credentials allow for cruising in environmentally sensitive regions.

The deck salon and cockpit are joined together for effortless flow inside and out. A hardtop bimini extends over the cockpit for use in less clement weather and intense sunshine.

Within, the accommodation sleeps up to 10 guests over five en-suite cabins and a crew of eight including the Captain over four crew cabins. In addition to the accommodation and salon with a dining area, there is storage for two tenders and two sailing dinghies for transport and entertainment.

Sailing yacht PATH intends to cruise the world over, with her first voyage taking her from Finland to the Mediterranean , where she will make her public debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2021, running from the 22nd to the 25th of September.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the people initially unaccounted for after his superyacht Bayesian sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.

On Saturday morning, Italian authorities announced a manslaughter investigation had been launched into the deaths of seven people, after a five-day operation that has seen divers carefully navigating their way into the cabin bedrooms.

After a decade-long legal battle which had seen him extradited to the US to face an $11bn fraud case, Mr Lynch had celebrated by inviting his close friends, colleagues and those who helped him on his legal team aboard his boat as a gesture of gratitude.

Mike Lynch missing

Yet a week of sunshine along the Italian coastline would soon turn to horror after the boat capsized shortly before dawn, only offering those onboard a few minutes to get themselves to safety.

British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his  18-year-old daughter Hannah  were among the seven people who died after the Bayesian  superyacht  sank near Porticello at about 5am local time on Monday.

Mike Lynch yacht sinking latest: Five bodies found in same cabin as manslaughter investigation launched

Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo also died.

The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it sank at around 5am local time near the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

The yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, is already confirmed to have died after his body was recovered from the wreck on Monday, while 15 survivors were rescued.

Here's what we know about the 22 people on board:

Hannah and Mike Lynch

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch had been in the headlines long before the boat incident following being the centre of a high-profile fraud case.

The 59-year-old is known for founding Invoke Capital and Autonomy, and his disappearance comes just weeks after he was cleared of all charges by a US jury related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

HP claimed, just a year after the sale, that Mr Lynch had used accounting tricks to artificially inflate its value before the sale. He spent 13 months under house arrest before being extradited to the US last May for a trial that acquitted him in June this year on all 15 counts.

Mr Lynch told a Sunday Times journalist last month that he was “about to go on a very long holiday.”

In June, he spoke of his “indescribable relief” at being back at home in Suffolk with his wife, daughters and their six dogs. He told reporters: “I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”

Angela Bacares

Mike Lynch and Angela Bacares

Wife of Mike Lynch, 57-year-old Angela Bacares managed to escape to safety and is in a wheelchair with abrasions on her feet that prevent her from walking, according to la Repubblica.

The newspaper said she told doctors that at 4am, the boat had tilted and she and her husband were woken up.

Under Angela Bacares’ name, the couple’s estimated wealth is £852m, the Sunday Times Rich List revealed in 2023. They have a house in Chelsea, west London, but primarily live on their farm in Suffolk with their six dogs and rare breeds of pigs and cows.

Hannah Lynch

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch was travelling with his daughter Hannah, whose body was lifted ashore on Friday afternoon.

The 18-year-old had just completed her A-levels and secured a place to read English at Oxford University. Hannah’s former English teacher Jon Mitropoulos-Monk said she was “one of the best English students in the country” having scored 100% in her English Literature GCSE.

Patrick Jacob, a family friend, paid tribute to her on Friday, saying: “Hannah was charming and ferociously intelligent with an insatiable thirst for life and knowledge. She was also warm, loving and deeply considerate; remarkably for her age. I am 50 years older than her and in my life I have never met anybody like Hannah. We have lost one of our brightest stars whose future held so much promise. Her loss is unbearable.”

Chris Morvillo

Neda Morvillo and Chris Morvillo

Chris Morvillo is a lawyer who represented Mr Lynch in his US trial. He is a partner at the Clifford Chance law firm who confirmed on Tuesday he was among the six missing.

In his most recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch’s trial. At the end of the post, he thanked his family for their support: “And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.

“None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after….”

Neda Morvillo

Chris Morvillo’s 57-year-old wife Neda was with him on the holiday. She has a luxury jewellery brand, which she runs under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Her husband’s firm Clifford Chance said in a statement: “Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda who are among the missing.”

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer

Another of those confirmed to be dead is lawyer Jonathan Bloomer who is the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International.

He is also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox, which confirmed he is missing. Its group chief executive Aki Hussain said they were “deeply shocked and saddened” by the news.

Mr Bloomer was a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair are believed to be good friends, according to the Financial Times .

Judy Bloomer

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer’s wife Judy was also on board the yacht and has been confirmed dead.

Mr Hussain said in his statement: “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing.”

Mrs Bloomer is on the board of The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers. The charity described her as a “brilliant champion for women’s health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years”.

Recaldo Thomas

Recaldo Thomas

Recaldo Thomas was the superyacht ’s chef and the first person whose death was confirmed.

The Canadian-Antiguan national was found by the Italian coastguard near the sunken boat. A friend of Mr Thomas, who asked to remain anonymous, said the yachting community has been saddened by his death.

She told The Independent: “He was a one-of-a-kind special human being. Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job.”

Ayla Ronald

Ayla Ronald

Ayla Ronald and her partner are two of the 15 who survived the yacht disaster, law firm Clifford Chance confirmed.

The 36-year-old worked defended Mr Lynch in court and was on the trip as part of the celebration for his acquittal.

Clifford Chance said in a statement: “Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident.”

She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father Lin Ronald told The Telegraph, saying she was “very shaken.”

Mr Ronald said that she was “invited to go sailing as a result of the success in the recent United States court case”.

Ayla’s partner Matthew also survived the boat disaster. There is little more known about his background or condition.

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunsky’s face covered by an officer from the British embassy as she leaves hospital in Italy

Charlotte Golunski’s testimony of the ordeal on the ship were some of the first to be published after she was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.

She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica , confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued. She said: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

The 35-year-old is a partner at Invoke Capital, one of Mr Lynch’s law firms, and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

James Emsley

Ms Golunksi’s partner James Emsley was also rescued from the yacht, according to Sicily’s civil protection agency. There is little information on him, but it has been confirmed the 36-year-old is the father of her one-year-old daughter.

One-year-old Sofia was rescued from the water by her mother and subsequently looked after in hospital.

Ms Golunski told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that her family survived only because they were on deck when the yacht sank after encountering a heavy storm.

Dr Domenico Cipolla told local media that the family have had a “physical and psychological upheaval of their lives.”

He said the hospital provided “toys for the baby, cuddles, and fed them because they were frightened and hungry”.

The family of three left the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in a black van on Tuesday via a back entrance today. They were accompanied by an officer from the British embassy, who covered the family’s faces with a jacket to hide them from a huddle of photographers.

James Catfield

The captain of the superyacht James Catfield survived the horror and broke his silence on Tuesday with just five words.

He said: “We didn’t see it coming” and was described as “limp” as he waited outside an emergency room in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese, according to local media.

The Italian coastguard confirmed on Tuesday evening that Leo Eppel, a crew member, also survived the yacht sinking.
