National 12s at Salcombe Yacht Club

Salcombe Estuary is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty within the South Hams. The beautiful tree lined creeks with the wonderful wildlife they support, provide idyllic scenery for the perfect sail.

Racing in the Estuary is very tactical, due to the many tidal eddies and varied winds. These factors combined mean you never sail the same race, twice.

Salcombe Yacht Club boasts one of the largest Twelve fleets, exceeding twenty boats with two-thirds on the start line most weeks. The boats vary from an old Morgan Giles design (N446) to more modern boats such as Freak Outs, Final Chapters, Design Eights and a Feeling Foolish soon to be launched.

Every year we race from mid-March to New Years Day. For the majority of the year the racing is on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons, except in the winter when we race Sunday mornings. During the summer, local race-traing is organised on Sundays.

The club offers class racing for N12s, Solos, Salcombe Yawls and Toppers. There is also a large handicap fleet.

Salcombe History

Salcombe is a small town located on the southern coast of Devon, England. The area has a long and interesting history, dating back to prehistoric times.

During the Bronze Age, around 2500 BC, the Salcombe area was home to a thriving community of farmers, who built settlements and worked the land. Evidence of their existence can still be seen today, in the form of burial mounds and stone circles.

In medieval times, Salcombe became an important center for the fishing and shipping industries. The town grew rapidly, and by the 16th century, it was a thriving port, exporting goods such as wool, wine, and salt.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Salcombe became a haven for smugglers, who used the many coves and inlets around the town to bring contraband goods into the country. This illicit trade brought great wealth to the area, but also led to violent clashes with customs officials and other law enforcement agencies.

In the 19th century, Salcombe saw a decline in its shipping and fishing industries, but the town continued to attract visitors, who came to enjoy its beautiful beaches and stunning scenery. Today, Salcombe is a popular tourist destination, known for its picturesque harbor, sandy beaches, and quaint shops and cafes. Throughout its long history, Salcombe has played an important role in the economic and cultural life of the region.

  • Overbeck's: Overbeck's is a National Trust property that offers stunning views of the Salcombe estuary and features a beautiful subtropical garden, a museum, and a café.
  • The Salcombe Gin Distillery: Gin lovers will enjoy a visit to the Salcombe Gin Distillery, where they can take a tour, learn about the distilling process, and sample some of the award-winning gins.
  • Beaches: Salcombe is known for its beautiful beaches, including North Sands, South Sands, and East Portlemouth. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and water sports at these idyllic spots.

In the winter months (December to February), temperatures in Salcombe typically range from around 5°C (41°F) to 10°C (50°F), with occasional cold snaps bringing temperatures down to freezing or below. The winter months also tend to be the wettest, with an average of around 12-13 rainy days per month.

Salcombe Geography

Salcombe is a coastal town and popular holiday destination located in the South Hams district of Devon, England. It is situated on the eastern side of the Kingsbridge Estuary, which is a ria formed at the southern end of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The town is located within the South Devon Heritage Coast, which is renowned for its stunning cliffs, beaches, and coastal scenery.

Salcombe is surrounded by picturesque countryside, including rolling hills, woodlands, and farmland. The town itself is built around a natural harbour and is divided into two parts by the estuary. The main part of the town is located on the east side of the estuary and is connected to the west side by a passenger ferry.
