About Sherpa

Sherpa has been created for a highly experienced yachtsman who is a repeat client for Feadship. Her explorer-like exterior profile is accentuated by an unfaired hull which leaves the plate work and welding exposed. This sturdy finish was requested by the owner who wished to generate an industrial look. At the same time, Sherpa ’s exterior still features a wealth of high-end details, including lots of teak, polished stainless steel and meticulously dressed aluminium and steel elements.

The expedition-style architecture will enable Sherpa to carry a great deal of equipment wherever she sails. The owner wishes to have all kinds of transportation and logistics options available as he embarks on his adventures in different parts of the world, including large tenders and various vehicles to use on land.

FEADSHIP PROJECT 815 LAUNCHED AND NAMED SHERPA

Thursday, 10th may 2018, developed in close collaboration with british designers rwd and brokerage house cecil wright & partners, who previously worked on the 78.5 metre hampshire ii, this is the first feadship to feature an unfaired hull..

SHERPA’s name reflects her immense carrying capacity, with vast expanses of open deck space for storing everything from tenders to helicopters. What’s more, her two giant boom cranes, the largest ever fitted to a Feadship, will offer a maximum reach of 20 metres.

Unlike most superyacht support vessels, SHERPA will feature luxury finishes such as teak decking, stainless steel detailing and accommodation for up to 13 guests, as well as 22 crewmembers.

She will also offer plenty of room for al fresco relaxation as the tender garage can be converted into a superyacht beach club through a clever system of folding and rotating bulwarks.

Power comes from a pair of MTU 16V4000 M53R engines for a top speed of 15.7 knots and a globetrotting range of 5,200 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Her technical launch on April 26 was followed up this morning by the installation of her dedicated wheelhouse (another Feadship first) and a towering mast with a built-in elevator and observation platform, which will make SHERPA the tallest Feadship in the yard’s fleet when she is delivered later this year.

Other superyacht projects currently under development at the Dutch yard include the 110 metre flagship Project 1007, which was styled inside and out by Michael Leach Design.

Yacht News YF News Editor

In April an odd looking hull was transferred from the NMC Yard enroute to Feadship's Kaag yard. It is known as hull YN815 and not alot is known about this vessel as yet. It would be the first vessel of this type to be built by this particular yard. Word has it that it is being built as a support yacht to support an existing Feadship, the 78.5-meter "Hampshire II". The 71.2-meter vessel is nearly as big as the mothership rumoured to supported. The vessel will be completed at Feadship's Van Lent yard.

Hull 815, now named "Sherpa" was launched today. Aptly named I have to say.

This one confused me. I don’t get why you would order a Feadship support vessel but it’s probably just an explorer design. Also, it doesn’t really look like she has a superstructure forward. I thought that was to come.

Milow232

Milow232 Guest

Isn't she the support vessel to "Hampshire II"?
They just added the full pilot house. I’m still somewhat surprised Feadship built a support vessel given their marketing ploys. Also interesting to note, Hampshire II is now sporting a blue hull.
Maybe the see it as a custom project and don't say no to a previous clients request.

I was not expecting those smoke stacks. After all the latest installations, she looks very commercial.

Some knob on the Feadship Instagram page was making a big deal about how their standards have slipped so far, given the quality of the fairing of her hull.... like it wasn't meant to be that way.

longpig

longpig Member

I am inclined to agree with the knob. Looking at the latest close up photos. That is really shocking. The worst hull I have seen. Not only the welds and seams, but the hull looks like it has been shrink wrapped on. You can see all the small squares of the frame work. It is indeed for a repeat customer. "owner’s brief for an industrial and highly functional exterior" Brand new build where they achieved the look of a conversion of a crappy old work boat. Or someone ran out of money. We all saw what happened with the 107 mtr Kleven. Got cheap on the hull, and then had to have it fully faired and repainted before he could sell it.
The owner certainly didn't ran out of money as he is, according to different publications, Britain's richest man. Perhaps this is what the owner was looking for.

Whats that bright orange thing on the Bow Sprit. Is that a Harpoon Gun ? That would explain those chimneys. Rendering whale blubber can be real stinky. And those huge davits on the side make sense as well now. "Industrial finish." "Highly Functional." Yo Ho Ho. A whaling we will go. Actually. What's better. One whale or a dozen dolphin. ?

"Sherpa" (hull 815) on her first set of sea trials...
"Sherpa" is back at Feadship for maintenance. She is in the same shed as the new build 816. In the new shed it seems there was barely space enough to fit and they had to put her in on an angle to make her squeeze in.

I think feadship did what the client had asked them to do, but I have to say this is one of the bad examples of a support/shadow vessel that has been done from scratch for this exact purpose. I think it falls behind its Damen counterparts and way behind Hodor the support vessel for Lonian. Its a slow vessel that has to leave the mothership way before to setup at the next stop, its hull form and decks doesnt allow for much toy storage, its just not functional in my opinion.

SHERPA // Feadship

Sherpa - also known as yn 815 is a rugged luxury yacht with a strong look..

SHERPA features an exterior and interior styling by RWD , the naval architecture was an in-house job by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects. The vessel has a length of 73.60 meters.

The owner wanted a vessel with a lot of storage for equipment, large tenders and land vehicles for adventures around the world. Two cranes, one with a reach of twelve meters, the other one reaches twenty meters. Furthermore, a helicopter platform is there as well.

Motor Yacht Sherpa Feadship

Motor Yacht Sherpa Feadship

Her explorer-like exterior profile is accentuated by an unfaired hull which leaves the plate work and welding exposed. This sturdy finish was requested by the owner who wished to generate an industrial look.

The yacht features an owners’ suite on the main deck, two VIP suites, and four guest cabins. Furthermore, there is an observatory on the bridge deck. Aft under the helicopter platform is a lounge, dining area, and a bar.

The hatches of the big tender garage open differently. One starboard hatch opens up, the port side hatch folds down. Tender storage is also on the main deck. On the port side is a very big crane for a tender about 10m, the space on the starboard side is a bit smaller. Between this storage is a glassed corridor to connect the aft area with the forward area.

I visited the yacht during the Superyacht Press Tour 2018 but no pictures are allowed (superyacht business as usual). The interior is dominated by dark wood. The bridge has a nice lounge aft with very big windows. Also, the crew area seems to be spacious in comparison with many other yachts.

See Mark Zuckerberg’s glossy new $300M, 287-foot superyacht ‘Launchpad’

All aboard S.S. Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

Tony Castro Ltd

Tony Castro Ltd profile image

Company Description

Over 500 motor and sailing yacht designs completed and today there are over 10,000 boats on the water with the Tony Castro design stamp.

The Studio is set in the beautiful sailing village of Hamble in Hampshire. Operating from a traditional thatched manor house, it provides an ideal environment to create high-quality, creative design-work. It has a friendly and quaint atmosphere which helps to build good relationships with clients. 40 years in business provides us with the best source of knowledge, i.e. experience!

To really understand yacht design, a passion for the sea and proven track record of success on the water is a surely a prerequisite for a yacht designer?!

Tony started racing boats as a young boy and by his teens had won numerous championships. This expertise proved to be the bedrock of his understanding of boat dynamics, which proved invaluable when he started; he formally set up his studio in 1981. In those days you were judged on the competitiveness of the yachts you designed and the only way to secure a fully crewed raceboat, further commissions was to win on the water ...

Thankfully, the first Tony Castro-designed yacht broke records, and in 1981 JUSTINE III won the One Ton World Cup – becoming the first, and to this day the only, fully crewed race yacht to win all five races in a world championship, which was one of the most prestigious and challenging yachting championships of its time.

From this illustrious start, the studio won four more world championships in different classes, various commissions from numerous manufacturers and individuals wanting the Tony Castro Design stamp. Over the following almost 40 years it led to a yacht design business with numerous awards for production and custom yachts for both power and sail, for both manufacturers and individuals, ranging in size from small boats to superyachts.

My design team

My team is built from a highly talented and experienced group of individuals, each accomplished in their own right and extremely dedicated. We are one of a handful of teams worldwide that can deal with all aspects of a yacht design, able to offer a complete harmonious package of naval architecture, exterior and interior design.

Personality

Q : How were you introduced to the world of superyacht design?

In 1984 I designed one of the first “superyachts” as we call them nowadays. One of my clients, who had been involved with one of our most successful racing yachts, approached me after my involvement with the America’s Cup boats and asked for a 31m sailing yacht. This was considered to be a massive yacht at the time and was to become a cruising yacht, built in steel—strong, sleek and nimble. She had a shallow draught keel with winglets and twin rudders. She is still a joy to sail today and on its third owner since new. Soon after that the interest in larger yachts increased enormously and further advances in materials and building techniques were made, making the superyachts of today possible.

Q : Where does the inspiration for new projects come from?

Unlike the majority of my fellow designers, we don’t have a particular brand of style of our own, or sell ready-made designs, therefore I rarely find myself sitting down and wondering what to do next. We find that our projects always start by listening to the client and from there we create an original and unique design to suit them. After a few years you use your experience from previous designs to draw a refined solution. Despite starting with a design brief, we still need to turn dreams into reality and be able to generate new ideas, and ‘create’ the designs.

Q : If there were an award for the best design of all time, which one would you choose?

I would like to give the prize to nature because there are things in the world such as the egg that simply cannot be improved upon. It’s perfectly designed for its purpose, simple, light and yet strong. However, if pushed I would have to say one of my favourite and admired designs is a Breguet wristwatch, not only because he was the first person to make one but also because it does what it says on the box. It is extremely precise and accurate—a masterful piece of micro-engineering and manufacturing that always looks beautiful and never goes out of fashion.

Hot on the trail of 56 superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs and subject to seizure

The massive superyacht Dilbar stretches one-and-a-half football fields in length, about as long as a World War I dreadnought. It boasts two helipads, berths for more than 130 people and a 25-meter swimming pool long enough to accommodate another whole superyacht.

Dilbar was launched in 2016 at a reported cost of more than $648 million. Five years on, its purported owner, the Kremlin-aligned Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, was already dissatisfied and sent the vessel to a German shipyard last fall for a retrofit reportedly costing another couple hundred million dollars.

That’s where she lay in drydock on Thursday when the United States and European Union announced economic sanctions against Usmanov — a metals magnate and early investor in Facebook — over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

“We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets,” President Joe Biden said during his State of the Union speech Tuesday night, addressing the oligarchs. “We are coming for your ill-begotten gains.”

But actually seizing the behemoth boats could prove challenging. Russian billionaires have had decades to shield their money and assets in the West from governments that might try to tax or seize them.

Several media outlets reported Wednesday that German authorities had impounded Dilbar. But a spokeswoman for Hamburg state’s economy ministry told The Associated Press no such action had yet been taken because it had been unable to establish ownership of the yacht, which is named for Usmanov’s mother.

Dilbar is flagged in the Cayman Islands and registered to a holding company in Malta, two secretive banking havens where the global ultra-rich often park their wealth.

Still, in the industry that caters to the exclusive club of billionaires and centimillionaires that can afford to buy, crew and maintain superyachts, it is often an open secret who owns what.

Working with the U.K.-based yacht valuation firm VesselsValue, the AP compiled a list of 56 superyachts — generally defined as luxury vessels exceeding 79 feet in length — believed to be owned by a few dozen Kremlin-aligned oligarchs, seaborne assets with a combined market value estimated at more than $5.4 billion.

The AP then used two online services — VesselFinder and MarineTraffic — to plot the last known locations of the yachts as relayed by their onboard tracking beacons.

While many are still anchored at or near sun-splashed playgrounds in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, more than a dozen were underway to or had already arrived in remote ports in small nations such as the Maldives and Montenegro, potentially beyond the reach of Western sanctions. Three are moored in Dubai, where many wealthy Russians have vacation homes.

Another three had gone dark, their transponders last pinging just outside the Bosporus in Turkey — gateway to the Black Sea and the southern Russian ports of Sochi and Novorossiysk.

Graceful, a German-built Russian-flagged superyacht believed to belong to Putin, left a repair yard in Hamburg on Feb. 7, two weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine. It is now moored in the Russian Baltic port of Kaliningrad, beyond the reach of Western sanctions imposed against him this past week.

Some Russian oligarchs appear to have not gotten the memo to move their superyachts, despite weeks of public warnings of Putin’s planned invasion.

French authorities seized the superyacht Amore Vero on Thursday in the Mediterranean resort town of La Ciotat. The boat is believed to belong to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, which has been on the U.S. sanctions list since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

The French Finance Ministry said in a statement that customs authorities boarded the 289-foot Amore Vero and discovered its crew was preparing for an urgent departure, even though planned repair work wasn’t finished. The $120 million boat is registered to a company that lists Sechin as its primary shareholder.

On Saturday, Italian financial police in the port of San Remo seized the 132-foot superyacht Lena, which is flagged in the British Virgin Islands. Authorities said the boat belongs to Gennady Timchenko, an oligarch close to Putin and among those sanctioned by the European Union. With an estimated net worth of $16.2 billion, Timchenko is the founder of the Volga Group, which specializes in investments in energy, transport and infrastructure assets.

The 213-foot Lady M was also seized by the Italians while moored in the Riviera port town of Imperia. In a tweet announcing the seizure on Friday, a spokesman for Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the comparatively modest $27 million vessel was the property of sanctioned steel baron Alexei Mordashov, listed as Russia’s wealthiest man with a fortune of about $30 billion.

But Mordashov’s upsized yacht, the 464-foot Nord, was safely at anchor on Friday in the Seychelles, a tropical island chain in the Indian Ocean not under the jurisdiction of U.S. or EU sanctions. Among the world’s biggest superyachts, Nord has a market value of $500 million.

Since Friday, Italy has seized $156 million in luxury yachts and villas in some of its most picturesque destinations, including Sardinia, the Ligurian coast and Lake Como.

Most of the Russians on the annual Forbes list of billionaires have not yet been sanctioned by the United States and its allies, and their superyachts are still cruising the world’s oceans.

The evolution of oligarch yachts goes back to the tumultuous decade after the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, as state oil and metals industries were sold off at rock-bottom prices, often to politically connected Russian businessmen and bankers who had provided loans to the new Russian state in exchange for the shares.

Russia’s nouveau riche began buying luxury yachts similar in size and expense to those owned by Silicon Valley billionaires, heads of state and royalty. It’s a key marker of status in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and size matters.

“No self-respecting Russian oligarch would be without a superyacht,” said William Browder, a U.S.-born and now London-based financier who worked in Moscow for years before becoming one of the Putin regime’s most vocal foreign critics. “It’s part of the rite of passage to being an oligarch. It’s just a prerequisite.”

As their fortunes ballooned, there was something of an arms race among the oligarchs, with the richest among them accumulating personal fleets of ever more lavish boats.

For example, Russian metals and petroleum magnate Roman Abramovich is believed to have bought or built at least seven of the world’s largest yachts, some of which he has since sold off to other oligarchs.

In 2010, Abramovich launched the Bermuda-flagged Eclipse, which at 533 feet was at the time the world’s longest superyacht. Features include a wood-burning firepit and swimming pool that transforms into a dance floor. Eclipse also boasts its own helicopter hangar and an undersea bay that reportedly holds a mini-sub.

Dennis Cauiser, a superyacht analyst with VesselsFinder, said oligarch boats often include secret security measures worthy of a Bond villain, including underwater escape hatches, bulletproof windows and armored panic rooms.

“Eclipse is equipped with all sorts of special features, including missile launchers and self-defense systems on board,” Cauiser said. “It has a secret submarine evacuation area and things like that.”

Eclipse was soon eclipsed by Azzam, purportedly owned by the emir of Abu Dhabi, which claimed the title of longest yacht when it was launched in 2013. Three years after that, Usmanov launched Dilbar, which replaced another slightly smaller yacht by the same name. The new Dilbar is the world’s largest yacht by volume.

Abramovich, whose fortune is estimated at $12.4 billion, fired back last year by launching Solaris. While not as long as Eclipse or as big as Dilbar, the $600 million Bermuda-flagged boat is possibly even more luxurious. Eight stories tall, Solaris features a sleek palisade of broad teak-covered decks suitable for hosting a horde of well-heeled partygoers.

But no boat is top dog for long. At least 20 superyachts are reported to be under construction in various Northern European shipyards, including a $500 million superyacht being built for the American billionaire Jeff Bezos.

“It’s about ego,” Cauiser said. “They all want to have the best, the longest, the most valuable, the newest, the most luxurious.”

But, he added, the escalating U.S. and EU sanctions on Putin-aligned oligarchs and Russian banks have sent a chill through the industry, with boatbuilders and staff worried they won’t be paid. It can cost upwards of $50 million a year to crew, fuel and maintain a superyacht.

The crash of the ruble and the tanking of Moscow stock market have depleted the fortunes of Russia’s elite, with several people dropping off the list of Forbes billionaires last week. Cauiser said he expects some oligarch superyachts will soon quietly be listed by brokers at fire-sale prices.

The 237-foot Stella Maris, which was seen by an AP journalist docked this past week in Nice, France, was believed to be owned by Rashid Sardarov, a Russian billionaire oil and gas magnate. After publication of an earlier version of this story, AP was contacted Sunday by yacht broker Joan Plana Palao, who said his company represents a U.S. citizen from California who purchased the Stella Maris last month. He declined to disclose the name of the buyer or the person from whom the boat had been purchased.

On Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a new round of sanctions that included a press release touting Usmanov’s close ties to Putin and photos of Dilbar and the oligarch’s private jet, a custom-built 209-foot Airbus A340-300 passenger liner. Treasury said Usmanov’s aircraft is believed to have cost up to $500 million and is named Bourkhan, after his father.

Usmanov, whose fortune has recently shrunk to about $17 billion, criticized the sanctions.

“I believe that such a decision is unfair and the reasons employed to justify the sanctions are a set of false and defamatory allegations damaging my honor, dignity and business reputation,” he said in a statement issued through the website of the International Fencing Federation, of which he has served as president since 2008.

Abramovich has not yet been sanctioned. Members of the British Parliament have criticized Prime Minister Boris Johnson for not going after Abramovich’s U.K.-based assets, which include the professional soccer club Chelsea. Under mounting pressure, the oligarch announced this past week he would sell the $2.5 billion team and give the net proceeds “for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, location transponders showed Solaris moored in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday. Eclipse set sail from St. Maarten late Thursday and is underway in the Caribbean Sea, destination undisclosed.
