The Ultimate Anchor Watch

With today's electronics, you can tell if your anchor starts dragging without leaving your bunk. But make sure you understand your system's limitations.

Illustration of Anchor Offset Error

— Published: October/November 2013

It's a pitch-black, nasty night with rain blowing sideways, and your concern about your anchor dragging sends you topside again to shoot bearings through lightning on distant landmarks. You escape below only to have your pencil tear a hole in the soaking-wet chart while triangulating the boat's position. Thankfully the days of wooden boats and iron men are behind us. Today, with just a few keystrokes, you can have an electronic box stand the middle watch, allowing a few hours of shut-eye. The challenge lies in understanding the limitations of the different anchor watch systems and choosing which to use.

Almost all anchor watch systems rely on the global positioning system (GPS), a revolutionary aid to navigation that is nonetheless prone to errors that must be compensated for when used to monitor the boat's position. Anchor watch systems work by creating a security zone around the boat, which is the electronic circle the boat is allowed to wander around in without tripping an alarm. To prevent false alarms, that circle must be large enough so the normal movement of the boat, and the inaccuracies in setting up the circle, don't cause the anchor alarm to go off. Remember, the GPS tracks the antenna, not the anchor, and the electronic center for all alarm calculations will be at the set point, the position the antenna was in when the system was activated. To prevent false alarms, the security zone must then take into account the following factors:

Offset error: The difference between the anchor's resting place and the GPS antenna at the instant you enabled the alarm. Note that when the boat swings 180 degrees, offset error doubles ( Figure 1 ), so you must include twice the offset in your calculation of the security zone.

Signal errors: The errors inherent in the GPS system itself in generating a position. All GPS systems use the same satellites so it doesn't matter if it is a plotter, handheld, or smartphone; the signal errors will be the same on every device. The signal error varies depending upon the type of receiver you have and whether you're using vertical measurements, but is about 16 feet on average, according to government sources.

Human error: There are a number of ways the operator can introduce errors, but most common is mistiming the activation of the set point, as happens when the button is pushed to activate the set point and the anchor then drags some distance from that point before holding.

Consider a boat on 75 feet of scope with the GPS antenna located 20 feet back from the bow, creating a total offset error of 40 feet when the boat swings 180 degrees. With the boat pulling to the limit of its scope, the GPS antenna could be a maximum of 115 feet from the set point. To avoid false alarms, add 16 feet for signal errors and 20 more for human error. The security zone radius is a total of 151 feet ( Figure 2 ). We could set a tighter zone but that invites false alarms.

Illustration of Anchor Security Zone

As a general rule of thumb, if your security zone radius isn't somewhere around double your scope (meaning a diameter four times your scope), it's probably not big enough. With practice, you'll get a good idea of your average human error and may even be able to reduce or eliminate it with good anchoring technique. Most signal errors are beyond your control, but proper equipment installation will eliminate some.

GPS-Based Anchor-Watch Options

Most GPS units, even handheld, include an easy-to-use anchor-watch feature. For directions, refer to your owner's manual. Smartphone anchoring applications have proliferated in recent years, and some of the offerings give a lot of bang for the buck. These are still GPS-based systems with all the limitations described above, and care needs to be taken when choosing both phone and app.

Phones with built-in GPS work best because they don't require communication with cellular towers to establish their position. Those without an internal GPS stop monitoring when cell reception is interrupted. The GPS function and screen take quite a bit of power so choose an app that monitors even when the phone sleeps, and keep it plugged in when it's "on watch." Phones have small antennas resulting in poor reception belowdecks. To work well, the phone may need to be kept far from your bunk in a place where it gets a good GPS and cell phone signal, making a loud alarm imperative.

Apps are rarely subjected to the rigorous testing done by marine equipment manufacturers to ensure the system works as advertised. App support is often difficult to find, and few companies offer recourse if you have problems. But these applications make a good backup to your marine systems, and offer extra protection when used with them.

Table Comparing Anchor Watch Apps

If you already have a compatible phone, an app with a short messaging service (SMS) function will alert you to a problem when you're off your boat, as long as you and the boat are in range of a cell tower. Out of the hundreds of anchor-monitoring applications available, Table 1 compares a few that have unique features.

Alternatives to GPS

For maximum safety, set additional alarms on devices that utilize technologies other than the GPS system. Almost every depth sounder has an alarm that can be set to warn of changes. This is of little use if the bottom maintains a constant depth to a hazard, but can be very helpful otherwise. Security zones can be set on many radars to warn if something crosses into them, including another boat in a crowded anchorage. Plotters that combine GPS, radar, and depth into a single alarm function greatly enhance security. High power consumption and false alarms are disadvantages of these systems, but some have the advantage of communication features that allow monitoring from afar.

Motion-sensing anchor-monitoring systems cost several thousand dollars and use a sensor attached to the anchor to measure its movement to the inch. If you decide to spend the money, choose a system that transmits the sensor information through sonar because equipment using cables running from the boat to the anchor tends to suffer tangles.

Anchor-monitoring systems can make the difference between ending up on the rocks and taking action in time to save the day. But they're all fallible. Using several in combination with common sense, plenty of scope, and smart anchoring techniques can greatly increase the safety of boat and crew while keeping you sleeping soundly in your bunk.

The Two-Zone Defense

Illustration of Two-Zone Anchor Watch Defense

Here's a technique that can be used to greatly enhance GPS anchor-watch security and reliability ( Figure 3 ). Start by setting an anchor alarm on one device by placing a security zone around the entire diameter of your swing. Once the boat has fallen back and is resting to prevailing wind and current, use a second device to enable a set point with a minimal security zone surrounding the boat — a radius of about twice the boat length.

This zone will not result in false alarms if wind and current do not change so the boat remains relatively stationary. If the boat drags, both alarms will sound, alerting you instantly. If the wind direction changes, the second device will go off but not the first, so you can start a real anchor watch. Once the boat stabilizes, enable a new set point on the second device and head back below, confident in the redundancy of the two anchor watch units.

  • The 10 best smartphone apps for sailors: proven through experience

Technology is evolving. Gone are the days when sailors relied purely on the basic equipment on board their boat — a chartplotter, GPS navigation and a pilot of the region. Nowadays, almost every modern sailor has a bunch of apps installed on their smartphone. So, we've asked our skippers which are their favourite apps they use the most. Here is our list of the top 10 sailing  apps  tried and tested over hundreds of logged miles.

Navionics app logo

1. Navionics: Boating Marine & Lakes

In our opinion, this is the best app for navigating your boat (but also for diving, fishing or other water sports). You'll find an incredible amount of information in it, from conventional GPS navigation to bay depths, harbour data, and contacts . Plus, it allows you to share your live location so your friends or family can follow your route online. We at yachting.com consider Navionics to be a basic part of any smartphone sailing kit ! The only downside is that it is a paid app, but it's worth every penny.

  • Purchase Navionics at  www.navionics.com

Windy app logo

2. Windy.com app

The Windy app and the windy.com website are one of the most well-known sources for boaters to check the weather forecast. In addition to wind direction and strength, you can find forecasts for temperature, waves, rain and cloud cover. Just like with any forecast model, it can't be relied upon 100%, so you should always pay attention to the actual conditions around you as well. Windy Premium, the paid version provides a more accurate forecast and more regular updates without ads.

  • Download the Windy app at  windy.app
YACHTING.COM TIP :  Clouds  have been a source of fascination since the dawn of time. However, you don't need to be an expert meteorologist to know what to expect from looking at the clouds. In fact, this knowledge is practically essential for sailors. So, how do you read the clouds? Check out our article to find out —  Sailing: how to predict the weather by reading the clouds .

Anchor alarm logo

3. Anchor Watch / Alarm

An anchor drag alarm  or anchor watch basically does exactly what the name suggests — it emits a signal (alarm) when your boat drifts outside your designated security zone when at anchor . There are many apps available with this function, but Anchor Alarm is the one that works best for us. When you drop anchor, simply press the position button and adjust the perimeter you don't want to leave — for example, after taking into account the surrounding rocks and your proximity to shore, you might decide that you want to set the perimeter so that your anchor won't drag more than 15 metres. The app will remember where your anchor is located and will keep an eye on your position throughout the night. Should your boat move outside the set boundaries, it will trigger an alarm on your phone.

  • Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
YACHTING.COM TIP:  Review the basic rules of anchoring in our  complete guide to anchoring and moorings . We've covered two specific scenarios where you might need a little extra help. The first is on  how to prepare your boat for a stormy night at anchor and the second one is a guide to the Mediterranean Mooring technique, a combination of anchor and mooring lines often used in Greece —  How to moor stern-to: a step-by-step guide .

Navily app logo

Navily is more of an app for recreational sailors where you'll find more than 14,000 anchorages and 6,000 marinas with photos and reviews from the community. There are also more than 700 partner marinas where you can book a berth directly via the app. The premiums version unlocks core features, such as automatic itineraries and distance calculation at sea. Navily claims to be the most innovative cruising guide.

  • The app is available at navily.com

Logo apps How to tie knots

5. How to Tie Knots

Every skipper should have a masterful knowledge of sailing knots for every situation and should ideally be able to teach the crew. But, at the very least, you could install an app on their phones and get them to learn themselves. For this, we recommend the app How to Tie Knots which uses 3D animation to provide a realistic experience of tying knots using a virtual rope. There are countless apps out there for learning to tie knots so if you find something more suited to you, there are plenty of options. After all, they all have the same goal: to teach you how to tie knots.

  • Find this app and similar ones on the App Store or Google Play.
YACHTING.COM TIP: Ropes or lines are one of the most important things on board any yacht and you simply can’t do without their ability to fasten, join and connect. Mastering at least a few basic sailing knots is essential for sailing, anchoring and moorings. It's not just beginner sailors who make mistakes , so we've prepared a guide to  9 essential sailing knots   for all your boating needs.

Seahelp app logo

This is one of the best-known  breakdown assistance services for sailors. SeaHelp is a 24/7 rescue service that includes insurance and reliable assistance at sea should you break down or have an emergency. There are three types of membership available online and the app can then help you with things like towing your boat, starting, bringing fuel, fetching parts, freeing lines from the propeller and weather advice. The SOS button  can also be used by non-members  of this service and sends out a distress SMS with your current location and mobile number. After receiving the message, SeaHelp immediately calls back to verify there is a problem and if there is a real emergency, sends a rescue boat. If you sail frequently or are planning a more challenging voyage, we highly recommend setting up this service.

  • Find the app and purchase a membership at sea-help.eu .
YACHTING.COM TIP: In the event of an accident or mishap during your voyage at sea, deposit insurance will save your nerves as well as money. Are you hesitating whether it is worth taking out? In our experience, it definitely is! MySea app logo

MySea is a free interactive guide to marinas, harbours, jetties, buoy fields and restaurants in Croatia, Greece and Turkey . For each marina, it provides information on the type of mooring, safety regarding the direction of winds, services (showers, toilets, petrol pumps, supermarkets, etc.), entertainment and dining options on-site. There is also a current weather forecast for the area with a bird's eye view. The app includes thousands of user reviews on individual marinas and berths can be booked directly via the app. Even admission to Croatian national parks can be paid for via MySea.

  • Find it at my-sea.com .

Marine Traffic app logo

8. Marine Traffic

Marine Traffic comes in especially useful if you are sailing in areas where there are a lot of cargo ships. This platform provides real-time information on marine traffic, live port arrivals and departures, as well as gross tonnage and registration number of the cargo ships moving in your area. If you are heading to the English Channel, the Baltic Sea or are planning a voyage further offshore, the risk of collision with a cargo ship is much higher. Bear in mind that the captain of a large tanker cannot see small sailing vessels, so it is best to give them a wide berth.

  • Take a look at the live map of cargo ships at www.marinetraffic.com

VesselFinder logo

9. VesselFinder

Similar to Marine Traffic, VesselFinder provides a live map, on their website and app, of the network ships using the AIS system — over 200,000 ships a day! In addition, it allows you to search for a specific ship and find its current location and more information on the vessel itself. View the ships and their position on the map in real-time or look at their previous routes, sailing history and, where applicable, marina reservations. It is also possible to create your own fleet of friends and track the individual boats of the whole group.

  • Find out more about the app at www.vesselfinder.com

Map of Vesselfinder

The VesselFinder app displays current marine traffic on a map, but you can also search for a specific ship, and view its current location and sailing history

Tide Alert app logo

10. Tide Alert (NOAA)

Recommended for all those who sail in tidal waters (France, the Baltic, Scotland...), it provides all the information you need so you don't get caught out by the tide, such as predicted tide height, the moon phase, etc. The whole Tide Alert (NOAA) environment is user-friendly, intuitive and easy to use. Plus, there is an alarm feature to alert you to a low or high tide. And best of all, the app even works offline if your signal drops out.

  • Download it on the App Store or Google Play.

Great Anchor Watch App

Just took a trip from Seattle to Glacier Bay AK and back using this app and it worked great. Just launch the app when you are ready to anchor and set the anchor location when you drop the hook. It will track the boat position from that point forward showing on the screen everywhere the boat has been since the set. It allows you to then set a radius alarm for any distance but since it will show the boat position when you back up to set the anchor you will see the radius at that time. Very reassuring to know how your boat is tracking and to do a quick check at night. It does consume a lot of battery so we run it with an iPad left charging. The app works in background as long as you don't close the app so you can use your device for other things and come back to the app and it will show the tracks made since you left it. Need to put your device in a location where it both gets GPS and someone can hear the alarm. Anywhere in the main cabin worked for us. It works with or without internet.

Excellent app---best one by far

My wife and I anchor out probably 60 nights per year. We needed an app that we could rely on as well as one that is easy to use. I have tried several other apps and none are close to as good as this one. When I sense a wind shift I love looking at the color coded lines that clearly show periods of time based on color. The new boat shift will be a new color and you can quickly tell if the boat is lying in the correct area. I also like the remote features so that when we go to shore we have a warning system. I have never written and app review but felt this app was superior and deserved a review.

Outstanding stand-alone, remote monitoring is poor

This app is one of the best stand-alone anchor alarms that I’ve come across. It’s very easy to setup, and it worked as advertised throughout the night. The initial tutorial is helpful. I would give it 4-5 stars for the stand-alone features. One issue is that the alarm functions like any other sound. You can’t put DnD mode or set it to vibrate on your phone. This would be desirable, since I often get text messages at all hours and would like to set DnD but get audible anchor alarms. Most importantly, however, I paid for the app to use its remote monitoring feature. There is no tutorial for it, the FAQ/manual is sparse, and I couldn’t get it to work properly. I was hoping to find an anchor alarm that allows monitoring iOS device-to-device with alarm on the remote phone. I couldn’t get it to work, and I have programming background. At best it’s not user friendly, at worst the feature doesn’t work properly.

Developer Response ,

Dear carsten, Please send an in app report for the monitoring feature, we’ll walk you through. To get the alarm without other disturbances at night, you can use it in ‘plane’ mode. All internet notifications will be disabled without betwork yet anchor can wake you up. To get the phone vibrate or flash up with the alarm, you can use the basic phone settings

High-tech anchor watch

' data-srcset=

When forced to anchor in a spot with poor holding ground, the wind howling, the current running and a lee shore eager to snap up your boat, standing anchor watch can be a trying experience. Even in conditions less severe, the sheer uncertainty of the situation can induce a corrosive paranoia.

“Are we dragging?” you ask. A check with a hand-bearing compass reveals that the boat hasn’t moved. “No, no we’re fine.” You exhale. Fifteen minutes later, doubt resurfaces. “Are we dragging?”

Thanks to marine electronics, the anchor watch is no longer locked into this subjective loop. And now there is even a product dedicated to monitoring the status of your anchor.

A long time ago the standard way to do anchor watch was to use a “hockey puck” bearing compass to determine if the boat had moved. This involved taking bearings on fixed points and noting those in the log. As night fell and those marks became difficult to see, you often had to take new bearings on lights as they winked on ashore. When radar became a more prevalent feature on voyaging boats, you could use radar ranges on prominent land features to triangulate the boat’s position on the chart. While an easier method than taking bearings, radars do use electricity, and most voyagers are ever-concerned about conserving battery power. Now, however, an anchor watch is far less stressful and indeed isn’t even as much of a watch as it used to be. The impressive accuracy of GPS &mdash especially GPS receivers that are equipped to use the FAA’s Wide Area Augmentation System &mdash has made anchor watch more akin to the function of a smoke detector. Set it and forget it. If your anchor drags, the GPS receiver notes the change in position and sets off an alarm. It would seem that the WAAS GPS receiver could well be the ultimate solution in the long, proud tradition of the anchor watch. But there is a company offering yet another ingenious electronic device for standing a hands-off anchor watch. The Anchor Alert system from Deep Blue Marine, engineered by Ascend Marine, is designed to detect movement of the anchor and sound an alarm. Anchor Alert has three components: a transponder that connects directly to the anchor, a hull-mounted (or hung over the side) transducer and a display unit that has an audio alarm for waking you up. Inside the bronze-alloy anchor transponder is a plastic cylinder that contains a circuit board. One of the electronic components on the board is something called an accelerometer. This small electronic device senses movement in both the vertical and horizontal planes. According to Wayne Prichard, president of Ascend Marine, the accelerometer has been programmed to respond primarily to horizontal movement. Should the anchor drag, the motion is picked up. “The accelerometer has the ability to sense a movement,” Prichard said. The unit “then takes a snapshot that lasts 1 1/2 to two seconds to analyze that movement and send a severity score to the display unit.” This information is transmitted ultrasonically through the water to the boat. “This was a difficult product from an engineering standpoint,” Prichard said. One of the challenges involved getting the signal from the anchor transponder to the boat. The data needed to be received even in cases where the signal was bouncing off the bottom or off other boat hulls, creating something called multipath. “We needed to do a good job of rejecting multipath signals and noise, and get the pertinent data through,” Prichard said. Ascend engineers did this by using a spread-spectrum technique similar to code division multiple access (CDMA), the modulation scheme employed by some cell phones that allows many users to transmit the same frequency (GPS also uses a CDMA approach). Each Anchor Alert system transmits its data in a specific code. This allows the unit on the boat to reject signals that don’t match the code sequence. Anchor Alert uses an LCD screen on the boat to indicate to users, via a bar graph, the amount of anchor movement. The unit has a user-settable alarm threshold. According to Prichard, the Anchor Alert system is superior to relying on the anchor-watch function of GPS receivers, because GPS monitors boat movement, not anchor movement. Should the boat swing into a new position due to wind and/or current changes, a GPS-based alarm might be set off, even though there may have been little or no movement of the anchor. The bronze anchor transponder unit, which has a breaking strength of 11,000 lbs, is powered by two D-cell batteries that will reportedly last up to 60 days. The transponder is designed to turn on automatically when immersed in water and will work in a range of water temperatures. The suggested retail price for the Anchor Alert system is $1,295. Who would have thought while standing watch years ago with only a compass and dog-eared note pad scribbled with bearings that the process would one day be so easy?

How to Use the Anchor Alarm on KnowWake

Both long-distance cruisers and weekend cruisers alike will agree that a reliable anchor alarm, also sometimes called an anchor watch or anchor drag alarm, is a critical piece of boat safety equipment. While some boats have anchor alarms built into their suite of marine electronics , many boaters rely on a manual anchor watch or opt for an anchor watch app.

Whether you’re planning a long-distance adventure like the Great Loop, spending your weekends overnighting, or just camping out for the night in a quiet cove, the KnowWake app now has a built-in anchor alarm that is ready for action.

Before we dive into how to use the KnowWake anchor alarm, let’s take a closer look at what exactly an anchor drag alarm or anchor watch is, and why you might consider using one.

boat in the water

What is an Anchor Watch and/or KnowWake’s Anchor Alarm?

Originally, the idea of an anchor watch was born among sailors to stand watch overnight, keeping an eye on the vessel at anchor and standing ready to alert the crew of any potential dangers. The idea of an anchor watch has obviously evolved overtime, and to this day, is still put into practice on many larger ships and yachts—with the support of marine electronics, of course.

In its most basic form, an anchor drag alarm does just what its name describes: it emits a signal, or an alarm, when a boat drifts outside of a designated security zone around the boat. Today’s anchor alarms rely on GPS technology, and allow users to create a perimeter (usually a circle) around the vessel. The key to setting up an effective perimeter for an anchor alarm is to allow just enough space for the normal movement and motion of the boat, so as to not signal a false alarm.

Keep in mind, modern anchor alarms track the boat, with a signal coming off the electronics and/or an attached antenna or satellite—and not the actual anchor itself.

Using the KnowWake Anchor Alarm

As part of the 4.7 app release, KnowWake unveiled a suite of new safety and social features, designed to make your days on the water better than ever. Part of that release included the all-new anchor alarm tool, which creates a security zone around the vessel, signaling both new and experienced captains of any movement or drift away from its current location.

Follow these simple steps to utilize the anchor alarm in your KnowWake app:

  • First, make sure you have the most recent version of the KnowWake app downloaded to your iPhone or Android.
  • Open the app, and click on the bottom left ‘Wheel’ icon to access the main menu panel.
  • Select ‘Anchor Alarm.’
  • Upon clicking, a new display will open that allows you to set your Alarm Settings.
  • Select your alarm preferences, either Sound, Vibrate, or both.
  • Use the slider to adjust the size of your radius—anywhere between 1ft to 100ft.
  • Remember to set your location permission to “Always” in your app settings, in order to successfully track your vessel when the KnowWake app is in the background.

Ready to use the KnowWake Anchor Alarm tool?

Take the first step and download the app today to get started.

Boat: 58' Sedan Bridge
watch alarms/alerts in the plotter and our redundant DGPS... as well as alarms on both depthfinder and ... and guard zones... but they're all on the (often enclosed) bridge and not hear-able from inside the . I could fix that, but it uses a boatload of to keep almost any of that running all night...

And then we also have built-in watch alarms in and tablet/phone apps (TimeZero, Plan2Nav, iSailor)... but those are pretty much just a circle around the , without any additional settings (especially set-able afterwards) for exact anchor location... OK as far as they go, but not particularly exact...

And then there's Drag Queen... which works well enough for the basic functions (and let's you set/refine the anchor location after the fact)... but it doesn't really do much more than that (graphic time plots, SMS to phones, etc.)...

So I thought I'd look to see if any of the other apps out there might be truly wonderful, something we could use as yet another layer of redundancy. All this brought on by a bouncy/rolly anchorage last night, where Drag Queen worked fine even if minimally...

We do Android; has anyone used any of these?

Anchor Watch

Screen Shot 2015 05 12 at 08 v2.58.24

"Anchor Watch" uses the GPS on your smartphone to monitor your boat's position. If the boat moves outside of set limits, the program will alert you immediately. Alerts include phone calls, sound, vibration alerts, popups, email or SMS (through a third party). There are no more sleepless nights when you worry about weather your boat is dragging or not. Keep the phone next to where you are sleeping and a quick glance will assure you that all is ok. If the boat drags out of the predefined area (no limit on radius), it will alert you in any way you decide. Flashing text, sounding alarm or even call to another phone. As only anchor guard app for iOS, Anchor Watch allows for the manual adjustment of your anchor position, by touch of a finger or manual entry. So if you were busy with other things then setting the alarm, you can adjust for the drift.  And if you anchored both stern and bow, Anchor Watch offers an unique course alert when a minor drift can still mean your boat is turned from the pier. Anchor Watch sophisticated filtering allows for GPS errors, which can occur every now and then. The settings panel is fully customized allowing a number of different alarm types. Of course it runs in the background too, which allows you to pursue other activities on your phone while Anchor Watch is on guard. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Fortunately you can tell Anchor Watch to conserve battery and update only in foreground.  Available as an in-app purchase are advanced nautical maps as well as the functionality to download and show offline maps which you can use when you don't have a data connection (or don't want to use it due to roaming charges. The maps available are based on the http://www.openseamap.org data. Check for quality and availability on their website, it is under rapid community development. You can also send in your maps and they will be added to the server for the benefit of all. Anchor Watch is under constant development, so if you have any remarks just drop an email or write a feature request in the comment section and we will get straight to it. Known issue: enable Alerts in iPhone->Settings->Notifications to receive audio alerts in the background

Todays smart phones have a hardware that is mind boggling. Why not put it to useful use?

"My Anchor Watch" uses the GPS on your smartphone to monitor your boat's position. If the boat moves outside of set limits, the program will alert you immediately. There are no more sleepless nights when you worry about weather your boat is dragging or not. Keep the phone next to where you are sleeping and a quick glance will asure you that all is ok.

If the boat drags out of the predefined areas, it will alert you in any way you decide. Flashing text, sounding alarm or even send an SMS to another phone.

These functionllities are not available in any other anchor watch! To get it at this price is only improving matters. Isn't technology advances wonderful!

Tested: Vesper Cortex VHF radio, AIS and remote monitoring

  • Theo Stocker
  • August 11, 2021

Promising to revolutionise how sailors communicate on board, the Vesper Cortex integrates VHF radio, Class B AIS, remote vessel monitoring and more

A skipper using the Vesper Cortex VHF, AIS and Monitoring

Combining AIS with VHF is a game-changer

The modern sailor has an array of navigation systems at their fingertips providing information and certainty unimaginable to previous generations.

As radio , GPS , radar and AIS have proliferated, so to have the electronic gizmos at the chart table and on deck.

Getting them to talk to each other can still be a challenge, even in the days of NMEA 2000 .

Problems can arise when you try to integrate different transmitting devices, such as DSC radio, AIS, WiFi and cellular gateways, and all the radio frequency processing that goes with that, which is where the Vesper Cortex comes in.

Vesper Cortex VHF, AIS and Monitoring

Vesper Cortex VHF, AIS and Monitoring is easy to install

A neat black box, hidden away, and an intuitive user interface for the smartphone world, integrates all of those functions so that they work seamlessly together.

So what does it do?

Cortex is a DSC handheld VHF radio with up to ten tethered or wireless handsets.

It is a Class B+ SOTDMA AIS transceiver sharing the VHF antenna to avoid splitter issues, although it includes a splitter for a standalone VHF radio to run through the same antenna.

The smartAIS also calculates collision risks and necessary avoiding action. It is an anchor watch and MOB alarm system.

It is a remote monitoring and control system when you’re off the boat. It is a wifi gateway between your smart devices and boat network.

It is a verbal alarm system that tells you what an alarm is for without needing to look at the screen.

Because the system is built around its software, rather than separate hardware for each function, it can do all of these things at once, and has the capacity to have new functionality added over time, avoiding the need to replace it, hopefully for some time.

Intercom between the handsets, multi-channel VHF scanning, and radio transmission rewind to listen back to conversations you missed are all in the pipeline.

Installation of the Vesper Cortex

Installation is pretty straightforward, and you can install it alongside your existing setup, or instead of, and get rid of a number of bulky boxes.

It requires power, a network cable, antenna cable and a GPS cable, and each handset needs a power supply (all data is wireless), either to the wired tether, or to the charging cradle for the wireless handset, though this doesn’t need to be near where you are going to use it.

It has its own wifi antenna as well as built-in sensors including battery voltage, barometer, 9-axis motion and heading sensor, five ports for NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 inputs and two outputs so you can monitor any information on your network and add a speaker.

In normal listening mode with AIS on, it uses just 0.8A (12V). Transmitting on VHF low power that goes up to 0.9A and on high power 3.4A.

Boat intercom system tested: Crew-Talk Plus

A boat intercom system has a place on a racing yacht but how useful is it for cruisers? Toby Heppell…

Audio is provided by a 10W, 85dB speaker in each handset, and both the hub and the handsets are IPX7 waterproof (submersion for 30 minutes).

The very high resolution, sunlight visible touch screens are made with toughened Gorilla glass, and can be used when wet or with gloved hands, though all controls are replicated with physical buttons (menu, back, VHF, Ch 16, MOB and Call) and paddlewheel.

The handsets have rubber edges and back for antislip and protection.

The microphone is central on the front, with a push-to-talk button on the left side and volume control and power button on the right, and a DSC distress button under a hinged flap on the back, so it feels like a standard VHF handset to use.

Operating the system

For a system that does so much, operation is surprisingly intuitive and simple. There are seven main screens, accessible from the main menu giving: VHF radio, Vessel directory, AIS plotter, Instruments, Collision avoidance , Anchor watch and MOB.

Every page has a status bar across the top showing VHF channel and power, and the status of battery, GPS and wifi.

The VHF radio page shows your call sign and MMSI number, transmission power, channel and its intended purpose – selected by swiping the screen or rotating the paddlewheel, saved favourite channels and dual watch.

Squelch is set automatically to your preferred sensitivity (though exact control would be nice and volume can be set for the hub, or for individual handsets. At the bottom of the screen any watched vessels or collision risks are displayed.

The AIS vessel directory page displays priority/collision risk vessels, then saved favourites, then other alphabetically, with the option to call, find on the plotter screen, or avoid.

The plotter screen doesn’t have any cartography, but has a clear range display, with head up or north up options, zoomable from 0.5 miles to 60 miles.

Collision risks or saved vessels are highlighted and you can filter out vessels such as those that aren’t moving.

The icons show whether it is a ship, power or sail and how fast it is going. You can see all of the same data displayed on your chartplotter screen.

Tap one to bring up vessel details, including current range and bearing, CPA and TCPA, and call it on DSC, or to view it in Collision avoidance, where you can see the impact of any course adjustments on your CPA before you make them.

When you come to anchor, hit the anchor down button to record it’s precise location, and then set your desired guard zone.

The page displays depth, calculates the scope chain you have laid, and other vessels on AIS. You can alter exact anchor location and swinging circle parameters.

It will voice an alert if you drag, the wind changes, or you hit a water depth parameter.

If you have the Vortex Cortex Onboard app, you will get a phone notification for any alarms set, both for anchoring and any on board systems selected, with a full view of the same information and display as if you were on board.

Verdict on the Vesper Cortex

What this does is bring almost every electronic function other than navigation into one place, designed to function seamlessly together.

Having installed the unit, connected the handsets and entered my boat’s details, there was no setup – it all just worked.

Using the Vesper Cortex as an AIS to find, contact and avoid other vessels, and as a plain VHF radio, all while standing at the helm with a handheld device, was so intuitive that I quickly forgot how revolutionary this actually is.

There are other DSC radios with integrated Class B AIS just coming on to the market as well, but the fact that it does so much more – not least anchor watch and remote monitoring – makes this a genuinely game-changing piece of equipment.

Quality and functionality were all top notch.

It felt solid and rugged, worked well when wet and not at all vulnerable.

On small boats, the tethered handset supplied would be sufficient, with a socket at the chart table or on deck allowing you to use it in both places.

On larger vessels, the ability to keep the handset on you at the helm, on deck or by your bunk is invaluable.

The thought of losing one overboard, especially if it’s your only handset, doesn’t bear thinking about, so clipping on a lanyard and float would be the first thing I would do.

The only slight gripes I had was that the screen wasn’t quite as bright in direct sunlight as my B&G Triton 2 instrument display, though it was still perfectly legible

Unsurprisingly, it comes with an eye-watering price tag, at least compared to other radios, though this quickly evens out if you also add in the cost of AIS, antennas, splitters and remote monitoring systems.

This is more likely, therefore, to be installed on new boats or those having a complete electronics upgrade so your setup can be designed around it.

While there are some shortcomings to the system – intercom, channel scanning and transmission rewind aren’t yet available – the reassuring thing about this system is that it is designed for functions to be added via free software upgrades as functions are imagined and added, making it a pretty future-proof investment.

Morgan Stanley Chief Jonathan Bloomer Also On Sunken Bayesian Yacht With Michael Lynch

The chairman of Morgan Stanley International was reportedly among the six missing people—including UK tech mogul Michael Lynch— after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht Bayesian sank in rough seas near Sicily early Monday morning, according to new reports.

Italian emergency services headed out to sea towards the area off the Sicilian coast on Tuesday, ... [+] Aug. 20, 2024.

Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur and one-time billionaire, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are confirmed to be among those still missing after the ship sank (his wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued).

Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of the Morgan Stanley International bank and insurance company Hiscox, is also reportedly among the missing along with his wife, Judy.

Authorities on Monday told the BBC the missing people are presumed to still be inside the boat, and rescue operations resumed Tuesday morning.

The vessel had 22 people on board — 10 crew and 12 passengers — including people from the United States, Britain and Canada, when it overturned at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Italian coast guard.

Fifteen people were rescued from the vessel (including a 1-year-old girl), one person was found dead and six, including two Americans , remain missing, according to multiple reports.

Local media reported the person who died was a member of the crew, thought to be the yacht’s chef .

Who Are The Missing People Aboard The Bayesian Yacht?

Lynch, 59, and his daughter were the first to be reported as among the missing. Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has also not been found, nor has his wife and jewelry designer Neda Morvillo. Bloomer, 70, a close friend of Lynch's, is also missing along with his wife, Judy.

Key Background

The Bayesian was anchored near the port of Porticello overnight Sunday when a harsh storm hit the coast that included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water. The ship tipped over and quickly was drug underwater by its massive mast —it had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at 246 feet. Of the 15 people rescued in the aftermath, eight were treated at a local hospital.

Lynch was acquitted in a fraud trial in June after he was accused by Hewlett-Packard of artificially inflating the value of Autonomy before HP bought it for more than $11 billion in 2011. HP wrote off $8.8 million of Autonomy's value within a year of buying the company. Today, The Times estimates Lynch has a net worth of £500 million. He "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a member of his staff told the U.K. paper, and business filings show the boat is legally owned by his wife, Bacares.

Surprising Fact: Lynch's Co-Defendant Stephen Chamberlain Died The Same Weekend

Stephen Chamberlain, who was acquitted in the same trial as Lynch in June, died hours after news broke of Lynch's disappearance. Chamberlain was hit by a car while jogging in England on Saturday morning and was put on life support before his death was announced late Monday, the Guardian reported . Lynch and Chamberlain were both indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale of Autonomy to HP before being acquitted.

What To Watch For

An ongoing search operation includes divers attempting to search the vessel, now sitting 160 feet below sea level, as well as rescue boats and helicopters, according to CNN .

$215,000. That's the cost to charter the Bayesian, a single-mast sailing vessel, for one week .

Crucial Quote

“She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water,” Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at the pediatric hospital in Palermo, Italy, told The Times . “Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.”

We're ending our live coverage for this evening but here is a recap of what we know:

  • Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation into the Bayesian sinking;
  • Officials have revealed more details on their investigation and the difficult five-day rescue mission;
  • The six bodies found during the search in recent days were all in cabins on the left-hand - and highest - side of the ship. Five were found in the first cabin and the sixth was found in the third;
  • Prosecutors said the six passengers were most likely asleep when the boat sank;
  • The probe is now focusing on the crew and their responsibilities, with the captain set to undergo more questioning.

Monday 19 August

The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.

Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing.

One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck.

It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing.

Tuesday 20 August

The search continues for the six tourists missing.

It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."

Wednesday 21 August

The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.

Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.

Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm.

Thursday 22 August

The search resumes for the remaining missing person.

The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday.

Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died.

The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.

Friday 23  August

The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".

The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found.

A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.

A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah.

Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel".

Saturday 24 August

A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese.

Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived.

A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking.

Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche".

"He was riveting.  He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said.

Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen".

"In particular, he was wonderful with children.  I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said.

She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative".

Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led".

"I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain.  Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said.

"He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him."

A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars".

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah.

"Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said.

"Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."

Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released:

Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation.

Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors?

Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.

Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.

He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry.

Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?

The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.

The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.

Why did the boat sink?

The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.

He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.

Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?

Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.

Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.

Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.

What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?

Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.

He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado.

"Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said.

"There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions."

How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?

Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.

"Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said.

"I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks."

He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.

Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post).

But why was the five-day search so difficult?

More on this morning's press conference.

One of the main updates from prosecutors was that they have opened manslaughter and shipwreck investigations after the deaths of seven people in the Bayesian sinking.

Watch the announcement below...

Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.

Read the full report on the prosecutors' probe below...

Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference.

"Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work.

"Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht.

"So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen?

"Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life."

Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck.

Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself."

"It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth.

"If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer.

"But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at."

Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping.

"It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge.

"But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said.

  1. The Ultimate Anchor Watch
