Based on 2 parent reviews Full frontal nudityI really liked it, what's the story. By romantic comedy standards, FOOL's GOLD is actually more of a treasure-hunting action/adventure. Matthew McConaughey plays Finn, a laid-back surfer dude obsessed with finding a buried Spanish treasure off the coast of the Florida Keys. To do so, he has to get rich (and, in some cases, dangerous) patrons to fund his expeditions. Meanwhile, his estranged wife, Tess ( Kate Hudson ), an amateur historian with academic ambitions, is sick of the endless hunt and is about to divorce her irresponsible, narrow-sighted husband. The two collide when Finn manages to gain access to the yacht belonging to Tess' employer, Nigel ( Donald Sutherland ), a multi-millionaire with a shallow, tabloid-fodder daughter (Alexis Dziena). Using Nigel's money and equipment, the almost-exes go on one last mission to find the gold -- if someone else doesn't get there first. Is It Any Good?McConaughey and Hudson reuniting isn't surprising, given their successful 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days ; what's unexpected is how little chemistry they have here. The romantic electricity evident in the best romantic comedies is nowhere to be found. (Even anti-beefcake Billy Crystal was much more romantic in When Harry Met Sally .) Instead, there are blatant, near-constant references to Finn's "raw sexuality," his "genius" at three things ("treasure hunting, finding money for treasure hunting and, um, well, you know "), and other obvious innuendos. Speaking of McConaughey's body, it should have received separate billing in the end credits. There are more shirtless scenes than not, making him one of the few leading men comfortable with emphasizing his physique over his talent as the main reason for his bankability. After the eighth or ninth scene of his tan shoulders, you start to wonder whether there's any purpose to this film other than to be one long eye-candy shot for swooning women. That kind of (over)exposure proves distracting in both actresses and actors, and it diminishes this already-thin film to the level of thoughtless date-night fluff. Talk to Your Kids About ...Families can talk about what kind of movie this is -- a romantic comedy or an action/adventure. What do you expect from each kind of movie? What parts of the film "match" with each genre? Is the emphasis on McConaughey's body -- instead of Hudson's -- a departure from most romantic comedies? Is Fool’s Gold Based on a True Story? ‘Fool’s Gold’ is a 2008 action-adventure romance film. It reunites Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson , the team that delivered the superhit romantic comedy ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.’ ‘Fool’s Gold’ follows the divorced couple Ben “Finn” Finnegan (McConaughey) and Tess (Hudson), who spent most of their marital life looking for the Aurelia, a sunken Spanish galleon that went missing with the 1715 Treasure Fleet. Eventually, Tess became disillusioned and leaves Finn and treasure hunting. However, Finn finds a clue that can lead him to the Aurelia and convinces Tess’ current boss, multi-millionaire Nigel Honeycutt, and his daughter Gemma to sponsor his search. Although Tess is reluctantly reeled back into the world of treasure hunting, she soon rediscovers her passion for it. Like most other movies and shows about lost treasures, ‘Fool’s Gold’ fills us with an almost insatiable need to know whether the treasure hunting depicted in the film and the history behind it have any real-life basis. Here is what you need to know about it. Is Fool’s Gold Based on a True Story?No, ‘Fool’s Gold’ is not based on a true story. Neither McConaughey nor Hudson’s character is based on a real-life individual. While the 1715 Treasure Fleet is real, there is no Aurelia among the identified ships. However, the character of Moe Fitch, who is Finn’s mentor and portrayed by Ray Winstone, is reportedly based on the legendary Mel Fisher, who discovered the wreckage of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank in 1622 near Florida.  A native of Indiana, Fisher relocated to California and set up a diving shop there. He and his wife Dolores ran the business together and were pioneers of diving. In 1973, Fisher discovered silver bars in the Atocha wreckage. Two years later, his son Dirk found five canons with markings that prove that they are indeed from Atocha. However, tragedy struck the Fisher family shortly after. Dirk, his wife Angela, and diver Rick Gage were killed when their boat went down because of a malfunctioning bilged pump. After spending decades without much success but still ardently believing his life’s motto, “Today’s the Day,” Fisher found the main pile of the Atocha with the help of his crew. The value of the cargo is estimated somewhere between $200 million and $400 million. It comprises 24 tons of silver bullion, ingots, and coins; over a thousand pounds of silverware, crucifixes, and other items; hundreds of high-quality emeralds; over two thousand lighter stones; and more than 250 pounds of gold bars, discs, and bits. And this is supposed to be only half of what Atocha had on board at the time of the sinking. The Florida state made Fisher’s company hand over 25% of the treasure they brought to the surface to the state. Fisher’s company sued the state and got a verdict in their favor. Just like the Fitch-Finnegan Maritime Museum in the movie, where the treasures found on the Aurelia wreckage are displayed, Fisher’s discoveries are kept at Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum in Sebastian, Florida, and Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Florida. The divorce hearing was filmed at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) administrative buildings in Brisbane, Australia. QUT traces its origins all the way back to 1849 when it first began as the Brisbane School of Arts. QUT's main campus is situated in the Brisbane CBD alongside four other university campuses making up ‘the Knowledge Precinct’. To get to this location, catch a train to Central Station from any part of Brisbane and then take either bus or City Cat ferries to Gardens Point Terminal, where the QUT main campus is located. Alternatively, you can drive to Gardens Point Campus via Captain Cook Bridge. Once there, park at the QUT car park, which has short- and long-term options. Underwater and yacht scenes in Fool's GoldVillage Roadshow Studios, Oxenford, Queensland, Australia The yacht and underwater scenes take place on a yacht with the protagonists. During dinner on the yacht, both Tess and Finn tell Nigel about the treasure they’re hunting, which was believed to be the Queen's Dowry from Seville’s Archivo de Indias. As such, they decide to embark on an expedition in Florida hoping to find it. Capturing the picture in all its glory, Village Roadshow Studios, located in Oxenford, Queensland, served as a backdrop for this production. Stages 1,3,5, and 8 were used to capture footage of this movie. The facility consists of six sound stages and various water tanks used to film some underwater scenes for Fool's Gold. It also houses one of Australia's most giant underwater filming tanks, complete with boat wrecks that were utilized to recreate realistic conditions and settings for movies that require them. Since the studios are not accessible to the general public, only people receiving permission from a production can grant access inside. The Online ReflectorPrint This Post ‘Fools Gold’ a treasureBy Sami Shelton, News Editor With February being the month of love, we are sure to see several romantic comedies make their way to the silver screen this season. “Fool’s Gold,” directed by Andy Tennant, is one chick-flick that you may actually be able to get your partner to watch. The movie begins with island bum Benjamin “Finn” Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”) scuba diving in a reef just off a Bahamian island. During the dive, Finn and partner Alfonzo (Ewen Bremner, “Elizabeth I”) discover a shard of a dinner plate that bears the family crest of 18th century Spanish royals. They believe the shard is from the sunken ship Aurelia, which contained massive amounts of treasure. This is just the beginning of Finn’s misfortunes, as he and Alfonzo are soon picked up by two of Bigg Bunny’s henchmen. Bigg Bunny had loaned Finn a large amount of money to bring back treasure, and a shard of the dinner plate did not impress him. Finn is taken out to sea by the henchmen, chained up and dropped into the open ocean. Amazingly and predictably, Finn manages to escape the chains, float in open waters overnight and get picked up by some intoxicated college students on spring break in Florida. During all this, Finn is supposed to be getting divorced at a meeting with his soon-to-be-ex-wife and fellow treasure hunter Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”). Of course he is late to the meeting due to being stranded at sea, so what very little he owns (including the sunken Booty Call) is given to Tess without argument. It is very obvious here that Finn and Tess still love each other. After the meeting, Finn tells Tess about his treasure, but they ultimately go their separate ways. Of course, they are almost instantly reunited when Finn saves the hat of Tess’ boss’ (Nigel) high-maintenance, celebrity daughter Gemma (Alexis Dziena). Finn makes his way on board, realizes that Tess works on the yacht and they both manage to convince Nigel to fund their hunt for Aurelia’s treasure. Tess and Finn scour the island for clues as to where the ship may have sank, and end up finding the answers in the oldest building on the island, a church. All of the historic treasure is displayed in a museum, and everyone involved with the hunt becomes very rich. Tess and Finn, not surprisingly, re-marry in the end. Although “Fool’s Gold” is not a deep, philosophical, thought-provoking movie, it is a humorous chick-flick that most men will even enjoy. The beautiful footage of the Bahamas is enough to warm up a cold winter night, and the sparks between another McConaughey/Hudson romance are more than enough reason to see this movie. If you are looking for a good date movie, “Fool’s Gold” is an excellent choice. In “Fool’s Gold” Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, as golden as a pair of rotisserie chickens, squabble and cavort in a tropical paradise. How nice for them, and for those in the audience who want nothing more from a midwinter trip to the movies than to gaze upon the tawny limbs and perfect bellybuttons of the stars. Not that there isn’t a lot of other stuff going on in “Fool’s Gold,” a hectic action-romance-comedy directed by Andy Tennant from a script credited to him, John Claflin and Daniel Zelman. There is Alexis Dziena’s bellybutton, for instance, winking in solidarity (and perhaps in friendly competition) with Ms. Hudson’s. And if plot is what you want, there is plenty of incident, including underwater fights and high-speed shenanigans involving motor scooters, Jet Skis and prop planes. There is also quite a crowd of stock supporting characters. I suppose the filmmakers can claim some originality in assembling, within a single movie, a rich old guy in an ascot (Donald Sutherland), a crusty boat captain (Ray Winstone) and a murderous, greedy rap star (Kevin Hart), along with a loving, sharp-tongued gay couple and a pair of hapless criminal minions. If only this hodgepodge offered more fun and less of the kind of frantic creative desperation that tries to pass itself off as giddy comic exuberance. Mr. McConaughey and Ms. Hudson, who were less than electrifying in “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” appear to be suffering through a class in remedial chemistry, which they barely pass. Their characters, Finn and Tess, are on the verge of divorce. Finn is a feckless treasure hunter whose irresponsible ways have finally driven Tess, even though she still loves him, to dump him and return to graduate school. First, however, she finds work on a yacht belonging to Nigel Honeycutt (Mr. Sutherland), whose jet-setting daughter, Gemma (Ms. Dziena), drops in for some text messaging and bikini modeling. For a time “Fool’s Gold” holds out a vague promise of romantic farce, since it seems possible that either Gemma or her dad, or perhaps both, might become an obstacle to Tess and Finn’s inevitable reconciliation. Instead the film stages a melodrama of father-daughter estrangement between Nigel and Gemma and abruptly shelves the dumb bimbo jokes, though not the leering camerawork aimed at Ms. Dziena. And so the prospect of fireworks between Finn and Tess is quickly dampened, and the movie turns into a dull, noisy pursuit of old Spanish coins, aided by maps and letters and enough pseudohistorical explanation to round out the next episode in the “National Treasure” franchise. Will Finn and Tess find the treasure before the bad guys? Will they put aside their differences and rekindle their love? Yes to both questions! I haven’t spoiled anything, by the way. But perhaps I’ve saved you some trouble. “Fool’s Gold” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). It has some violence and sexual situations. FOOL’S GOLD Opens on Friday nationwide.
