MUB Design goes supersize with 120m superyacht concepts

Parisian studio MUB Design has released a pair of 120 metre steel and aluminium superyacht concepts called Rorqual and Stratum.

Based on the same hull, these new four-deck designs draw on the natural world for inspiration. The superstructure of Stratum (pictured below) pays tribute to the stratified shape of Japanese rice fields, ocean waves and sandstone canyons.

This veneration of nature continues with the interior, which places a strong emphasis on panoramic views and bringing the outside inside. Key features include a foredeck helipad, an aft deck swimming pool and a superyacht beach club beneath, but the most striking feature is the two outboard superyacht elevators , which would connect the upper four decks.

Accommodation is for up to 30 guests and 43 crewmembers, while a twin 1,957hp MTU 16V2000 M72 engine installation would allow for a top speed of 15 knots.

Meanwhile Rorqual (pictured below) takes after the whale of the same name, balancing a gigantic form with slender curves. The narrow V-shaped superstructure adds a sense of urgency and dynamism, which is reflected in her more sporty top speed of 21 knots, made possible by a quadruple 4,830hp MTU 20V4000 M73L engine set-up.

Moving inside and the décor is a blend of classic and contemporary elements, with felted furniture, walnut woodwork, marble surfaces and copper and brass detailing. A superyacht fireplace adds to the welcoming atmosphere on board.

Al fresco relaxation was another key priority with a raised aft-deck swimming pool, three sundeck spa pools and a DJ booth overlooking the aft deck, which can be converted into a dance floor. Rorqual would offer accommodation for up to 14 guests and 30 crewmembers, ensuring all needs can be catered for.

These latest designs expand the MUB Design portfolio, which also includes the 102 metre Fierce Calibre concept and the 85 metre Moea design .

MUB Will Amaze You With Their CALIBRE Concept Yacht

French design studio MUB – short for Mahjoub El mahmoudi – is proud to reveal their latest project. This is the super-fast 102M mega yacht CALIBRE concept, an incredibly beautiful vessel that means to blend speed with comfort into the perfect package for the open seas.

Designed to reach an impressive top speed of 39 knots through triple MTU 20V 8000 M71L diesel engines, each delivering no less than 12,203 hp, this superyacht could be one of the fastest vessels in the world. Those incredible numbers are then complemented by the unique experience and atmosphere this luxurious yacht will provide passengers.

The luxury yacht CALIBRE concept was actually designed on the same hull as the new generation ferry “Austal 270″, featuring various incredible features, especially on the comfort side. This is a sleek and elegant vessel, which will come with a jacuzzi, swimming pools and a spacious sundeck, as well as a large screen at the back of the vessel on the main deck for cool movie nights.

The CALIBRE will also feature astounding recreational areas, including a nightclub, a fully equipped spa, a sports room, a gymnasium and even a large aquarium. Furthermore, the Beach Club hosts a submarine and a dock for jetlevs, jet skis and sea sleds. What else could you ask for, but calm seas?

Calibre 102, a black yacht concept by Mahjoub El Mahmoudi – Fit for James Bond

Calibre 102 black yacht concept is a stunning yacht that has an interesting and elegant black and gray paint job with some modern and edgy exterior lines as well as a swift trimaran hull.

The Calibre 102M from MUB Design is a wonderful concept yacht created by Mahjoub El Mahmoudi.

Just looking at it, you can imagine it starring in a James Bond movie, like Regina the superyacht that appeared in Skyfall.

But the MUB Design yacht seems to be even better and just screaming to appear in the next James Bond movie.

According to the billionairesweb.com, the designer explains that the exterior design is inspired by the taper of a bullet – fitting for the arsenal of any bad guy– yet she’s also sleek and sexy, intended to turn heads and stand out from the parade of “wedding cake” yachts in a harbor.

While the 102 meter superyacht has movie star looks, she’s actually quite realistic for a wild concept.

The Calibre 102M is based on the proven hull platform of the next-generation Austal trimaran.

The first of these new Austal trimarans, hull No 270, was purchased for £50 million by Condor to serve as a fast ferry.

It was such fast ferries that inspired Mahjoub El Mahmoudi of MUB Design to create the Calibre 102M.

“Every summer we used to go to spend our family holidays in Morocco, my country of origin.

We started in Paris, and then drove through France and part of Spain to the port of Algeciras, where there were many types of boats,” Mahjoub El Mahmoudi said.

“I remember that I was instantly fascinated by the fast ferries, particularly by their lines and their speed.

I could never hide how excited I was when I went on board – it was a real adventure for me, every time”.

This fascination with fast ferries has translated into the Calibre 102M concept, which is not only designed to be speedy – reaching up to 39 knots thanks to power from three MTU 20V 800 engines – but also extremely comfortable and stable in rough seas, able to handle a swell of five meters or more.

Calibre Yacht by Mub Design

There have always been charges of excess in the exclusive world of yachts, but the Calibre Yacht by Mub Design pushes the extremities of excess further than we have ever seen before.

Looking beyond the rugged black and grey exterior, that make it appear to be a military inspired vessel or more accurately a villainous Bond yacht, the Calibre conceals a hidden life of luxury that supersedes its harsh façade.

The concept-yacht stands at an imposing 102 metres and takes on the tapered shape of a bullet, for a stealth, stream-line aesthetic. With the hull designed from a new and improved adaptation of the Austal Hull 270 trimaran, which stands to be one of the fastest high-speed ferries in the world.

Mahjoub El Mahmoudi, of MUB Design, explains the notion behind the idea of the enigmatic Calibre concept:

Mahmoudi’s fascination with exceedingly fast ferries has translated in to the Calibre concept- as it is designed to reach up to 39 knots courtesy of the power provided by the MTU 20V 800 engines. But, as one would expect, the Calibre provides consummate levels of comfort, remaining extremely comfortable and stable in high-speed expeditions and courageous enough to withstand choppy conditions.

But of course, the performance of the Calibre Yacht is just an added aperitif to the life of luxury it offers to all on-board. Boasting spectacular sun decks and spacious cabins, the yacht can fit up to 14 guests alongside a trusty crew of 17. Complete with extravagant extras including the customary helipad, gym, spa, sports facilities, Jacuzzi, multiple swimming pools and even a nightclub.

Containing enough added extras to make a life at sea wholly appealing; the Calibre Yacht is one of the most magnificent concept designs to have ever been created. Take a tour of the entire vessel below.

Taj Burrow Wins 2024 Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Event

Taj Burrow is now the first-ever three-time winner of the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy . The Australian legend beat style master Mikey February in a final that concluded three days of competition in quite possibly the best waves the event has ever seen.

The Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy is a unique competition that bills itself as “the world’s most luxurious surfing event.” In between chilling out on a luxury yacht and staying at the eponymous hotel, competitors spend three days at the Sultans surf break, duking it out in single fin, twin fin and thruster divisions.

This year’s competition pool was small, but fierce, including Mikey February, Jeremy Flores, Taj Burrow, Carissa Moore, Jadson Andre, and Ahmed “Ammaday” Agil. In the three days of competition, Andre won the single-fin division., February won the Thruster division and Flores won the twin division. Though he did not win any single division, Burrow managed to clinch second place in all three, giving a leading point total overall and a spot in the final showdown against February.

Unlike previous rounds, anything went for the finals, as far as equipment. Taj added a small trailer fin to his twin setup, while Mikey opted to stick with his Channel Islands twin. From the jump, February set a blistering pace, catching seven waves to Burrow’s four. However, Taj’s more careful wave selection gave him the upper hand throughout with a 9.10 and 9.03. February was close behind with his own 8.67 and a 9.10. However, as the final moments of the heat wound down, he found himself chasing a 9.04 wave that never materialized. In the end, Burrow was crowned the champion.

“That might be one of the funnest finals I’ve ever surfed,” said Burrow afterwards. “I don’t know if I’ll ever wear a jersey again … unless I get invited back! I got so tubed, with friends, staying at the Four Seasons, there’s no way you can better that. The pinch-me moments have been non-stop all week.”

An outstanding 1967 73’Custom-Built Long-Distance, Ocean Crossing, Flush Deck Cruiser, well known as a “little ship”, is now on the market!

Pioneer was built in 1966-67 in Chula Vista, CA as a customized offshore yacht to meet the highest industrial and military standards of that time. The design was developed by GEORGE MOORE, a naval architect from SanDiego who spent time with the world class Kettenburg Company. The significant results from George’s design was an advanced build that focused on luxurious comfort, seaworthiness, stream lined beauty and a large hull designed extremely strong meeting operating economy while gliding through the water. She is a one-of-a-kind and built to order. Some say unusually overbuilt for the early days of long distant cruising boats and too expensive to be built in todays competitive market. It begins with a fiberglass hull that is 6″ thick, 70’ WL (73’ LOA), 20 1/2’ beam, 6 1/2’ draft, full displacement that comes in at 91 net tons/130 gross tons. Her interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 people in 3 staterooms including a full-beam master suite on the lower deck aft. Her elegant choices of wood throughout the vessel, create a warm cozy living space. The mechanics of the design were chosen to perfectly match the heavy-duty hull with redundancies everywhere.

Over her very active history Pioneer has completed many ocean passages, including dozens of long distance non-stop coastal passages (e.g. non-stop from Southern California to Hawaii, Mexico and now cruising the coastal waters of British Columbia up to Alaska

Pioneer has had 4 owners and was based in Southern California and Hawaii during her first 33 years. For the last 19 years Pioneer has been based in the PNW with annual trips north to and as far as Alaska.

Pioneer had a full time captain for 27+ years working for the 1st and 3rd owners The current owners have operated the vessel without crew since purchasing the boat, often spending weeks at anchor in extreme comfort while living onboard before going in for supplies.

Some notable events regarding Pioneer, while in Hawaii, she has been in a few movies with Harrison Ford and also Robert Wagner. A gorgeous well built yacht is now waiting for the next adventure.

Pioneer’s parts inventory. There are tens of thousands of dollars of spare parts for engines and many of the boat systems, such as spare props, oil and diesel filters, thermostats, fuel solenoids, pump parts and rebuild kits, motors, valves, seals, gaskets, AC, oil, SS 50’davit cable replacement, etc.,. Parts Kits: o-rings, retaining rings, Stewart-Warner flexible shaft maker , electrical wire connectors, and much more.
Extensive Collection of Mechanics Tools and Test Equipment including: ¼:, ½” and ¾” sockets, pliers, wrenches, drivers, pry bars, crimper tools, cutters, heat gun, 3/8” & ½” power drills, pipe cutters/threaders, tubing benders, bearing, bushing, impeller extractors, and prop pullers, grease guns, oil cans, hand pumps, funnels and more. All the tools necessary to repair most systems and complete an engine rebuild on-site.
A partial list of replacement components includes the following spares: 32 V engine starter motor, complete Jabsco raw water pump, fuel solenoid, thermostat, AC fan motor, circulating pump/motor. Note: The choice of Cummins motors for the generators was because the 4 motors share a lot of common parts including starter motor, fuel solenoid, raw water pump, full flow and by-pass filters and so on. The common parts reduce the need to store different parts for different make engines which is often the case on pleasure yachts that are built for long distance travel to remote places where parts have to be air shipped in at great expense and loss of time.

Interior Layout

Pioneer’s thoughtful layout is an ideal comfortable cruising design. She has 6′ 6″+ head room throughout. On the lower deck the owner’s family aft suites are inspired by the idea of providing comfort and privacy, with a gorgeous spacious master suite aft; crew quarters were located forward accessed by a separate set of stairs from the salon. The salon and galley are midship on the main deck and above the engine room with the wheelhouse forward with large windows throughout the main deck cabins. Exotic woods were used everywhere bringing in rich grains and warm tones using first growth Burmese teak on the main deck, American Black Walnut in the master stateroom, Oak and Mahogany in the other 2 staterooms with carved solid wood closet doors of exceptional quality and design in all 3 staterooms. Beautiful hardware on all doors. . The exterior deck is open and safe, allowing anyone to enjoy the beautiful location you happen to be while at anchor or underway!

Cabins 1 x King Master, 2 x Twin Doubles

Excellent cabin layouts – The master stateroom is full beam aft with a walk around King bed, 2 large lockers (6’ wide lighted hanging closets port and starboard, storage below the bed and end tables)
Four (4) large portholes for light and fresh air.
Built-in sets of dresser draws forward of the hanging lockers, one used as an office desk or vanity, the other for clothes and personal items
The bed base, cabinets, and hanging locker doors all finished with American Black Walnut
Large en suite off the master with full size shower
Guest stateroom: A guest stateroom is forward of the master and is to starboard. Includes 2 single beds and plenty of storage. Hanging locker, bed frames with storage drawers, doors and trim all finished in beautiful oak wood. Outside this cabin in the hall is a separate door to the master head.
Forward Guest stateroom: 3rd stateroom is located forward of the engine room. It includes 2 raised single beds, built-in bureaus, a hanging locker and large storage cabinets under each bed, which is all finished in rich mahogany. This stateroom was originally designed for crew with ladder access from the stateroom to the main deck forward of the wheelhouse. This allowed for the owner’s privacy in the main cabin.
Private guest head adjacent to the forward stateroom recently upgraded to match master en suite.
Included in this section of the vessel is a walk-in deep freeze/pantry/beverage storage room (325 cu. Ft.),
Further aft is a huge stand up engine room and workshop with 3 watertight access doors
A large storage room is to port, just aft of the engine room. This space is currently used for spare parts, plumbing systems, electrical panels, carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaner and other items
Space under the aft stairs leading to the main deck is also storage
The salon is mid ship and a cozy spot with seating on the starboard side and an entertainment cabinet and expandable dining table/chairs to port
Next aft is the galley , stairs to the lower deck aft and a walkway to the art deck.
The wheelhouse forward is spacious with a center helm seat, chart table and pilot seat/berth to starboard. There are teak doors on either side giving access to the exterior side deck and a teak door leading to the salon. The side and salon doors are used for adjusting fresh air flow and a comfortable temperature while underway
Carpeted flooring throughout the lower and main decks and interior stairs, except for the galley, deep freeze and engine room
Stairs leading to the lower staterooms aft, forward cabins and flybridge are full width and centered in the boat.

Exterior Layout

As you enter up the steps from the swim platform you come to a large covered open space which is used for outdoor relaxing, dining and entertainment. A removable dinning table can be set up when required.
Aft to either side is built-in bench seating. Complete canvas/screen sides can be attached to help block winds.
A washer and dryer are located inside a built-in cabinet on the starboard side below a large window/pass through opening to the galley. The aft deck space easily accommodates 8 people for a meal and has had up to 18 on special occasions.
Very spacious wide side decks for easy movement back and forth, front to back, on both sides of the main cabin.
From the aft deck there are full width steps to the flybridge deck and the swim platform (no awkward ladders to negotiate).
The forward deck has spacious room in front of the wheelhouse to put a table or seating for relaxing, refreshments or dining; plus a large storage locker in front of the wheelhouse for fenders, dock lines, water hoses and other items. In this storage locker there is an access hatch and ladder leading to the forward guest stateroom on the lower deck. All deck surfaces and steps are painted width non-skid

Fly bridge Deck

Access to the flybridge is achieved via a wide molded stairway leading upwards from the Main deck aft deck, or up a classic wooden staircase located in the wheelhouse
The flybridge/sun deck has a limited helm station forward with 3 Captain seats center and 2 front facing bench seats with storage below on port and starboard and additional storage under the dashboard forward of the seating.
Large engine room fan intake units used for salt free air to cool the engine room, are located here behind the front facing seats with storage underneath.
The dry stack funnel centered adds to the lines of this beautiful ship and there is more seating on both sides with more storage underneath.
An insulated block ice box is located on the starboard side and a vented storage cabinet is on the port side.
Further aft there is a huge open space for storage and relaxing, with a mounted storage box center, 16 person life raft on port and a 2,000 lb. 360 degree electric davit mounted on the starboard side, as well as spare anchors.
The flybridge deck is a prime space for making an enclosed sky lounge on the forward half reconfigured for a wonderful living/entertainment area. In recent years Pioneer carried 2 16’ 2 person kayaks, a 11’ rigid bottom inflatable and outboard with a 15 HP outboard motor, a 14” Whitehall rowing/sailing boat, and a touring bicycle. (Please note these items are not included in the sale of the vessel)

Hull and Deck Construction

The hull construction is of the highest quality fire retardant F/G resin reinforced with multiple layers of woven roving making a 1 ½” laminate on the inside and 1 ½” on the outside; and a 3” foam core center made up of 4” X 3” horizontal foam strips wrapped with F/G woven roving and resin making the boat hull solid, and able to stay afloat in the event of a severe break in the hull due to an impact accident. At the keel the F/G hull is reinforced up to 6” on the radius’. Internally the boat hull is further protected with built in 12 x F/G fuel tanks (3,925 US gals) surrounding the sides and bottom of the hulls interior, effectively creating a double hull below the water line.

California Yacht Club Destroyed in Fire

MARINA DEL REY— A huge fire destroyed the California Yacht Club, located in Marina del Rey, on Dec. 11.

Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call around 11:30 p.m. that night and arrived to find a massive two-story fire.

Videos from news outlets show bright red flames traveling over the roof of the club and producing large black clouds of smoke.

Two firefighters suffered moderate injuries and were hospitalized before the blaze was extinguished just before 1:30 a.m. Dec. 12. The cause of their injuries has not been released.

Among the most prominent California clubs, the California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and has a long history of promoting yachting and maritime activities. It has frequently hosted national and international regattas, with recent events including the J/70 World Championship, U.S. Junior Women’s Championship, Martin 242 North American Championship and CFJ National Championship.

The club was started in Los Angeles harbor by a group of loyal yachtsmen – most from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and the rest active in other early yacht clubs of that day. In 1941, America went to war, and the Coast Guard took over CYC’s facilities in Wilmington. Members continued to fly the Club Burgee, but after World War II, the facilities were so run down that CYC never could return to its birthplace.

Former owner Steve Hathaway noted that his father helped build the club in the 1960s. “It’s been a home for so many people,” said Hathaway in a statement. “We are so heartbroken right now… It tears me apart to see… It’s just terrible.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
