Boat: Caliber 40
powered sailboats in the 24' to 30' range including a 24’ T-Bird, a 26, a 26, and a 30.

Here are some considerations for installing an on the 29:

It is a long ways from the to the top of the transom on an R-29
A standard “long” sailboat leg on an outboard is 25” long
The top of the prop needs to be 6” below the surface to account for pitching

You will have to mount the quite low on the R-29 transom
The R-29 transom slopes away from the
It will be difficult to reach the for starting

I am not sure how you will be able to control the speed with the motor mounted so low on the transom. The and had a throttle control.

Outboards built for use on a have lower unit gearing to slow the prop speed and are not so easy to find in a good used state.

A standard recommendation is 4 HP per Ton of .

We used the Columbia 26 (5200 pounds 19’ LWL 8’ Beam) with a 7.5 HP Chrysler Sailor 250 (low speed/high torque prop) all over and the . It was great in calm but seriously lacking in in the typical 1 to 2 tidal that occurs twice a day in any narrow . And, it was pretty useless trying to motor into 20-knots and a 3’ chop.

The 10,000 pound Cape Dory had a newer 10HP mounted in a well and seemed to have sufficient for almost all our needs. It was a start .

An outboard mounted in a well is far easier to manage than one mounted on the stern as is necessary on your Ranger 29.

Boat: Currently Shopping, & Heavily in LUST!
is new territory for me. So you could be right.

edit: Also, I am skilled in mechanical, (even electronics), and have finishing skills. So I will not be paying people to on most things on the boat. I also have a lot of time and I enjoy the long effort. So, I am hoping you are wrong. Even UNCIVILIZED mentioned 10k. Honestly, if I put 10k in this in 6 months, that would not bother me too much. But this is only if it is structurally sound and are not a issue.

and they do sail well, despite what some folks have said on this post. Think they have no experience with rangers. Rangers and Cals were the club back in the 70s. Not perhaps the most comfy boats since they are quick on their feet, but solid in and easy to . Most had vinyl liners that can be easily ripped out and replaced. Personally, i would just vinyl over the glass.

If it has the old engine in it, leave it. The weight went into calculating C.E. The step is a bridge that can be cut out and replaced with solid hardwood. Cut out the top without breaking so you can glue it back over the bridge.
The is bolted on through a flange on the . Bolts go through the to the . Nuts need to be sprayed with wd-40 for several weeks to loosen them up. Its Cast iron but really does not need much . I epoxyed mine to avoid the rust spots(for the benefit of the below). The probably need to be replaced. Both boats' bolts were far gone when we took them out. BTW you do not want to drop the keel, just whack the bolts out of the flange one at a time. Just puddy covering them from the outside.
New Bolts should be regular , monel, or so they do not react with the cast iron flange( protect the flange, not the bolts).
Otherwise not much else to worry about. The hull joint probably but not worth doing much about. Its a solid glass hull. The rangers are designed with some since the is far aft. Which brings up the desirability of having the examined to make sure the stainless tube is not cracked. Tube goes down with lateral flanges. The outside is actually two glued together. Often the rudders will get out of true vertical from bent shaft.
Otherwise, good first boat. BTW, from the stern will prevent the boat from wandering all over the place. The Rangers tend to wander when anchored at the bow.

, as well as grinding out & fixing areas of delaminated & or fractured glass.

Let alone, resealing the entire toerail, all of the way around the boat. Which, if it's bolted together, like on a 33', you're looking at several galvanically siezed in place, bolts per foot.
Then scraping, & or grinding out the old sealing compound. Adding in some new, & bolting things back together.

Either that, or structurally fiberglassing the hull & deck together, inside & out. Which takes ages, & is miserable work.

Look at it this way. On a car of that vintage, which had been sitting exposed to the elements for many, many years, what wouldn't you expect to have to replace?

Besides, with a bit of looking, you can find a R-33 in Good shape, for $10K, with Lots of , & a .
24-05-2016, 08:49
. Get a proper outboard mount (having it professionally installed is a good idea) and look for a 10 hp start . Yes a bit more but very reliable - since you are getting the boat for free and money was not the object, spending some on would be a good idea - having a reliable engine available on any boat for newbies is essential. Going without an engine is okay for an old but dangerous for all if you are just beginning. Once you have a motor, have at it and keep asking for help, do a lot of and know your own wants, needs, and limitations. I will tell you I personally spent three years rebuilding a 36' Tri from the keel up thinking as you do it was less expensive and the experience would do me well. The experience I got was the wife and hated it and, after 3 years, I joined them. By the time I got it back in the water and ready to go, we wanted nothing more to do with it (another aside, I invested double what I had paid for it and more than what I could have purchased one in the water and ready to go at the time). If you personally don't mind the hard work and like "doing it yourself" it will be a lifetime memory worth the time invested. Just be prepared!
24-05-2016, 09:03
; you get to learn how to sail in all sorts of situations. For we had to have an outboard on the r26, so got an old one that did not work. Not really an issue to learn to sail into and out of a slip, to drift towards one's intended direction and so forth. Better to learn how to do without an engine in the beginning rather than later.

Your comment about needing transom work is scary. If weakness at the hull joint I would stay away. If it's just needing an outboard bracket, that's no big deal.

if the R29 had the cast iron keel like the 26, but according to sailboatdata the 29 has a lead keel and I gather it is encapsulated too, is that not right?

Boat: Alerion Express 38 Yawl (former)
.

I know it would be relatively easy and to have an outboard, but it's also ugly, generally requires remote controls, and isn't what I would want longterm. So, presuming the boat came with an A4, I would have a long term goal of finding one and re-installing it. It depends on how much was removed with the engine. Controls? Gas tank? ? It could be too much of a job, but the A4 is a sweet, smooth engine that would push the R29 at for about 3/4 gallon per hour. (I would be tempted to over-prop the boat since the R29 is at the small end of the A4 spectrum.

If not, then I would go totally minimum with my pusher engine and treat it as a way to power at 4-5 knots in calm conditions. 6HP would be fine, 4HP would probably be nearly as fast.

Shop for second hand . The mast has steps; that's kind of odd. Shop for second hand blocks at marine flea markets.

Have fun; it's a great boat.

Hello all, I have just purchased my first sail boat, a 1973 Ranger 29. Is their anyone out there with a copy of an owners guide that I could make a copy of? I am also interested in finding other Ranger owners in the San Francisco Bay Area that would like to form a group to share information.

Hi, Thanks for posting and sharing... As the world turns, I was at kadena 84-87 working in the 44th on F15s. I remember the f4s .. my JROTC commander Col Jaquish was an F4 Jock. Check Six, ken

flycalvary: I purchased a 73 Ranger 29 last year, and it's also a journey of discovery. Getting her ready to put her in the water at Lake Tahoe, CA it going to be a challenge because I don't have a lot of documentation and schematics as to how the it was originally set up. Did you ever find a copy of an owners manual for the 73 Ranger 29? I would be interested in a copy of it if you got one. I sail at Lake Tahoe, CA and live in Reno, NV. Frank

Review of Ranger 29

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The Ranger 29 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.40 - 1.50 meter (4.59 - 4.89 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine at 30 hp (22 kW). Calculated max speed is about 7.5 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Ranger 29 is 1.97, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Ranger 29 is about 132 kg/cm, alternatively 744 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 132 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 744 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 22m 2 (236 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Rhodes Ranger 29

Rhodes Ranger 29 is a 28 ′ 6 ″ / 8.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes and built by Seafarer Yachts starting in 1960.

Drawing of Rhodes Ranger 29

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Design #437 Ballast: Iron(1900lbs) or opt. lead(2750lbs) Inboard optional. Imported to US by Seafarer Fiberglass Yachts. Another version in the UK known as the SANTANDER 28.

Newport 27 vs Ranger 28 vs Cal 30

  • Add to quote

Hello sailors, I am about to buy an old sailing boat here in California and I have done extensive research on several used boats for sale that would fit my budget and my needs ending up selecting these three. I am from Europe so we usually have completely different boats over there and I have never sailed any of these boats before but I have been on a Ranger 28 and on a Newport 30. I will probably sail mostly on week-ends short distances to Catalina, channel islands and other close coastal destinations. The Newport is from 84, the Ranger is from 75 and the Cal is from 69. They are all in pretty good conditions. Engines are diesel. Cal has an atomic 4 (needs work). Ranger has a Yanmar 1MG10 (woks but has a few leaks). The Newport a Universal Inboard Universal Diesel 5411. The Cal is the one that needs most work being the oldest... sails and engine work is needed, while the Newport and the Ranger are ready to sail. The Newport is in good condition. The Ranger has bad interior and the hull needs to be repainted, maybe also the main sail should go. I personally love the look of the Ranger though even if I know some people will disagree. I also feel it's a very good classic racer. They all fit my budget with the Cal and the Ranger being cheaper than the Newport. I would like to hear your opinion on which one sails the best in most weather conditions. Which one is the best built and also safest in a possible longer trip. Ideally I would like to go as far as Baja California and San Francisco. Pretty much which one you would go for if you were me. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about these boats as I am not sure which one I should go for. Obviously the Newport seems to be the one that would give me less problems but I am not in love with the look and style of the boat. Thank you for your advice. Cheers

ranger 29 sailboat review

The Ranger 28 is a handsome boat, esp if you like the 'tumblehome' look, Mull did a great job on that. But she's a bit twitchy in a breeze, esp downwind, like so many early 70s IOR influenced designs. The mainsail is extreme high aspect and doesn't do much for the boat, and the headsails are oversized for the same reason. Of your list, I'd probably go for the Newport, since it's a decade newer and has the fewest issues by the sound of it.

Thanks guys, I was going for the Cal 30 but my friends from the sailing club thought it needed too much repairs to sail again. Any other boat under 30/33ft that you would recommend worth looking at? I am not willing to spend a fortune. This is just a boat I would keep for a couple of years to then eventually upgrade to a more powerful bigger boat.

The Ranger 29 is a much better-mannered boat than the 28, and a better cruising boat. As Lazer said, an Ericson 27 or 29 would fit the bill too, and there should be plenty of those around your area, they have a good reputation. Some examples 'locally' (Sail) Cruiser Boats For Sale

ranger 29 sailboat review

Looked at one Ranger 28 in SoCal but it had major soft deck issues and leaks. The one listed at $2900 looks too good to be true. Nice boat though. IOR boats have problems when over canvassed, if you don't sail them like a stupid racer, they are fine. The Newport 28 is an improved version of the 27, same hull different deck, etc that I'd look for if you like the Newports. The owner of the one for sale in Dana Point is a nut. Might have bought it but he wouldn't show it and was a total jerk on the phone. The Cal 30 is a solid boat but if if that one needs a lot of work, they better pay you to buy it as repairs would probably exceed value of boat. Agree on the Ranger 29 but the only one recently for sale was a bit of a mess. Cheap but too much work for me to get it back in shape so passed. I've been looking for a similar sized boat and had to go to SF to find one with good equipment and not needing a ton of work. If you want to go that far afield, believe there is a Yankee 30 there that sounded interesting. Good S&S design and well built boats that have done a lot of ocean miles. yankee3 mk 3 sailboat S&S design, rebuilt diesel

The Cal 30 I saw is in my marina and it looks okay. It's a 50 years old boat so of course it has issues and needs work. The Newport I saw it today and it was a disaster. The bilge pump didn't work, it was rusty and the hull is probably rotting. I can't believe they try to sell these boats advertising them as good. The Ranger has also issues but out of three is probably the best one and can already sail. The keel is rusty and there is signs of corrosion. There is electrolytes on the propeller which will probably have to be replaced. The bottom definitely needs a paint job, the main sail must be replaced and the interiors are bad which is not a big deal. I wonder if a good bottom paint job will be able to get rid of the rust and how much it would cost to do that here in LA.

Kris1975 said: The keel is rusty and there is signs of corrosion.. Click to expand...

ranger 29 sailboat review

One thing that would concern me about all three boats is that the engines are old and probably raw water cooled. If they need replacement or major rebuild, the cost could be as much or more than what you pay for the boat.

Sounds like none are real keepers - I don' know the boat market in CA but here in Florida I would tell you to keep looking - used boats are a dime a dozen and will frequently pop up for sale - personally in your size I would look for a Cal 29 - very good sailor, well built - usually fairly cheap. Why buy a fixer upper when with a little patience you can have one ready to go - don't get to anxious to buy something - you will end up overpaying.

ranger 29 sailboat review

One of many designs that Gary Mull made for Ranger Yachts, the Ranger 26, conceived to be the ideal compromise between a safe and comfortable on-soundings family cruiser and a competitive racer, reflects much of the art and technology that Mull blended so well in the many boats he designed during his all-too-short career. The Ranger 26 is undeniably fast: One won the 1970 IOR North American Half-Ton Cup.

The 26 is a good-looking boat with a distinctive sheer and a nice balance between freeboard and cabin height—a handsome profile wasn’t sacrificed to standing headroom—and exemplifies the construction techniques of the 1970s.

The hull is laid up by hand, and the balsa-cored deck mates to it on an inward-facing flange along the sheer line. A black-anodized aluminum toerail, fastened with bolts on 6-inch centers, completes the joint. The 1-ton iron fin keel is bolted to the hull and should be inspected periodically because the half-inch galvanized keel bolts have been known to corrode badly.

The Ranger 26 is a masthead sloop. Its deck-stepped mast is supported by upper shrouds, double lowers, a headstay, and a backstay rigged with a tensioning bridle.

At about 12 inches wide, the side decks are on the narrow side. Sailors going forward must take care when negotiating the chainplates and genoa tracks and blocks. An anchor roller wasn’t fitted as standard equipment, so anyone planning on cruising a Ranger 26 would want to consider fitting one that could perhaps also hold an anchor.

The cockpit is a little over 7 feet long and is ample for racing, cruising or socializing. The width between the seats is about right for leg bracing when heeled. Since the boat has no quarter berths, an abundance of stowage space is available under both cockpit seats.

An outboard motor provides propulsion. The transom has a cutout to accept it, but a low bulkhead just forward of the transom keeps water out of the cockpit proper and provides a convenient mounting location for the mainsheet traveler. Steering is by tiller.

The accommodation plan is conventional for this type of boat. A molded-fiberglass pan that forms the base for interior furniture includes berth fronts and platforms, and a padded vinyl headliner extends down the cabin sides. A compartment for a portable toilet and a storage closet separate the V-berth from the saloon. In the saloon, a dinette (that converts to a small double berth) is fitted on the port side, and a settee is fitted to starboard. The small galley consists of a sink to port of the companionway and a two-burner propane stove to starboard. Standing headroom is about 5 feet throughout, and sitting headroom above the seat cushions is more than 3 feet. The cabin trim is teak, and the bulkheads are teak-veneered.

Bandit , the boat I sailed for this review, races with a 130 percent genoa fitted on a Harken furler. In the 8 to 10 knots of wind that day, the boat handled well under the main alone. Once the genoa was unfurled, the boat heeled slightly before quickly accelerating to about 5 knots.

Bandit carries her 40 years lightly because she’s been well maintained. She’s a fine example of a 1970s-era racer/cruiser and is still able to show her transom to many competitors.

The Ranger 26 was built from 1969 to 1976. Depending on condition and equipment, list prices range from $3,000 to $5,800—quite a bargain for the inshore cruising opportunities that the boat offers.

Keel. Fin keel. The Ranger 29 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.
