Review of Irwin 43 CC Mk III

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 681.0 liter fresh water capacity.

But be aware that even though a Wing Keel keel is very good for speed racing, a fishing nets and the like in the water can easily make you into a troublesome situation.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.50 - 1.60 meter (4.92 - 5.22 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Irwin 43 CC Mk III is 1.83, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Irwin 43 CC Mk III is about 300 kg/cm, alternatively 1680 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 300 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1680 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 17.67

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 46m 2 (495 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

The and are very solid and ours had no or even signs of . As we get more experience on the , we find her to be very sea kindly. We spend a day in 7-10 foot swells and 20-25 winds and had a very comfortable ride.

There is a reason the other Irwin's cost $25000 more. I can tell you from bitter experience, the rust stains on the mean the is saturated and the mild plate inside is damaged. Here are a few thoughts that prospective Irwin 43 buyers might want to consider. They illustrate the lessons I've learned the hard way, over a lot of sailing years, with seven (7) previous large cruising sailboats, and have survived to apply them to my present Irwin 43CC MKIII "CABARET (which may or may not be on the market this year- depends on issues for both of us.)
Ive owned her for 1.5 years - she'd just returned from her 6th season, in very good order, due to the owner's . Since then I've spent a lot of $$ on"infrastructure" improvements: the things that don't show or add glitz or "curb appeal", but the things the really knowledgeable buyer or will look at first.

For Example: a 6" diameter tank cleanout access , plus a System Boss polishing and filtration system with alarms at the helm- to address the typical island issues with contaminated fuel. All new standing , turnbuckles, and . A total professional review of all mechanical systems, replacement of nearly every hose below the waterline "just because" (ie because any one of these can sink you). Disassembly and servicing of the MaxProp (now!- before it runs out of grease and locks up), a new internal system (Facnor) with new sail, new Kato , new , , etc.( She already had 2 units, heavy duty AC and DC electrics, and chargers, inverters etc.) All new hoses, valves and level gauges for the holding , a new LectraScan....things like that. I think the US calls this "Preventive Maintainance". Seldom applied to sailboats.
I think the US calls this "Preventive Maintainance". Seldom applied to sailboats. Think on all this. AND REMEMBER: the natural condition of every boat is SUNK. It's only by our continuous attention and relentless diligence that they can be persuaded to FLOAT.

With all that behind me I am now doing the cure stuff: & exterior detailing and re-varnishing, Next will be updated nav for this season. Maybe even a flat TV and (for hopelessly addicted landside guests with an eight minute attention span).

Hello All.... I am looking at an Irwin 43' aft cockpit staysail ketch sailboat... with the idea to possibly purchase it... I was told by an exemployee of Irwin Yachts that they only made 3 of this model and interior makeup... this particular design was not offered beyond '77 .... it was not popular enough... for an aft cockpit it has 2 staterooms, 2 bathrooms, and a U shaped galley ... With the center board up it draws 4'-3", down 9' even... I have not found any layout for it online, but the exemployee was able to send me the layout design... it is a very comfortable looking sailboat and I would be happy with it.... what I am seeking is does anyone have any knowledge of the sailing characteristics ?... how well it points into the wind ?... how fast it sails ?... are there any known characteristic problems with this boat ?... are there any concerns with this model of sailboat ?.... I am awaiting any information... sincerely Jess

well... I didn't get any replies, but that is ok.... I took the plunge, had the boat checked out, and I put down a deposit on it... it looks great for a boat of it's age.... I will be on it at the end of the month... I plan to sail it south to the keys and then back up to the Tampa area in the 1st or 2nd week or march... my wife and I are excited by this rare find.... to think they only made 3 of this model, because no one likes the layout inside it... go figure.... I think it is a wonderful layout.... look forward to hearing from anyone out there who has an Irwin in the 40 to 45 ft range.... wondering how they sail and handle under sail ????? how well they point into the wind ????? how reliable the perkins 4-154 diesel is ???? thanks all

Just saw your question. I had a 1984 Irwin 4 CC ketch from 1999-2006. I lived aboard on the Chesapeake Bay and took the boat to the Bahamas twice. One time down the ICW to Fl and then to the Bahamas. 2nd time was offshore from North Carolina to the Bahamas. Good liveaboard with lots of room. Pointed into the wind reasonable well. I never lowed the centerboard as the centerboard line made 3 90% turns and I was not comfortable with the integrity of that system. Lived in fear that the line would part or the line would pull off the thru hull fitting. The Perkins 4154 was a very reliable and robust engine. Boat would cruise under power at 6 kts using 3/4 gallons per hour. The major problem was with the fuel tanks. There were two 75 gallon tanks under the cabin sole. The tanks were installed during construction and could not be maintained or inspected. Water in the bilge would flow under the tanks. After 20 years (2004) both tanks (they were aluminum) had pitted. Pressure testing showed the tanks were leaking. It was a major job to replace the tanks. It involved cutting thru up the cabin sole to remove the old tanks. I had new tanks fabricated and installed. The install allowed for the tanks to be inspected and easily replaced. The new tanks were aluminum with epoxy applied to the outside. A major expense was to replace the cabin sole. Boat bottom was solid, no blisters.

Perkins are reliable engines. You may get some more replies here: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/ Good luck, sounds great.

hello all.... is there any exemployees of Irwin yachts from 1977 that I can talk to, who might have worked on the sailboat I am looking forward to buying.... this particular interior layout and hull are not listed anyplace.... I did find out they only made 3 sailboats of this design... thanks

hello all .... just got back from my vacation... spent 2 weeks on my Irwin 43ft staysail ketch sailboat... my wife and I loved our time on it... didn't do much sailing as most of the prevailing winds were out of the south, and we her headed south... we did get the sails up a couple of times and it performed great... we didn't make the whole trip distance we wanted to... we spent some time at several locations enjoying the festivities and sites.... my friend came over and took control of my boat and finished taking to the marina where it will be kept... we had a wonderful time.... the money I spent to buy the Irwin was well worth it... a great boat...

Hello, I realize this is a very old thread, however, I'm currently looking at an Irwin 41 CC Ketch in Maryland 1983 or 1984 that has a leaking fuel tank issue. According to the yard they replaced the starboard tank under the salon sole several years ago and now apparently the port tank is leaking. My understanding is the amount of effort and cost to remove and replace this tank inclusive of cutting out and replacing the salon sole can be substantial. The boat has otherwise enjoyed a good history of maintenance and upgrades over the years with all new running and standing rigging on both masts, updated electronics, new Air Cond/Heat unit, brand new Stainless Polished Davit System and the list goes on. She does need a new water heater, that's easy and has the reliable Perkins 4 154. Seems to run good and I couldn't see any real oil leaks surprisingly even at the rear main seal. So my question is what in everyone's opinion is a reasonable cost for this undertaking ( the removal and replacement of the tank). I see a poster on this thread has done this on a 43 and I think it's safe to say this is a very similar install....Secondary to the leak the smell of diesel is strong...very strong....inside the boat. How hard is it to get the smell out once the source is removed and replaced.....I've seen several recipes but have never had to really deal with this issue. Mattresses, curtains, cushions, etc.... would hope that there is a solution to the soft goods but don't know for sure. And of course a full prepurchase survey would be done but at this stage I'm focusing on the above issues to decide if it's worth pursuing. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to everyones response.....My Best, Scott.

Scott. The Irwin 41 is a solid built boat from the early 80’s are you sure it is the Irwin 41 not the Irwin 41 Citation? Boats of this era have all the normal concerns. You mentioned some of the expected replacement issues. Check the hull and deck for soft spots. Expect the boat has been grounded and inspect the hull and rudder for abnormal signs. A survey would be appropriate.

Irwin 43 related. My wife and I are looking to upgrade to a 43 mk 3 my concern is head room, I'm 6'2" and would like to walk upright through saloon.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

43' Irwin MKIII vs. Irwin 46' Ketch

  • Add to quote

I'm a first time boat buyer trying to compare two Irwin's for Live-Aboard and Cruising: 43' Irwin MKIII (1989) vs. Irwin 46' Ketch (1982) Here are my questions: 1. Is there any significant difference in the quality of constriction between the 46 and the 43. I came across one forum where someone mentioned that the 46 is more of a "blue water" boat than the 43. (understanding that it is not a Blue Water boat, but perhaps a more solid boat) 2. Is there a significant different in the ability to single hand the 43 vs the 46? Or, if I were to get caught in rough weather, would one be easier to manage than the other? 3. Understanding there is only a 3 foot difference, while looking at slip rental fees, I noticed there is a $150 difference in prices between the two. In this case, boats over 44' see a large jump in price. Is this typical of what I will see as it applies to mooring/maintenance/repair, or would the overall difference be less dramatic? 4. Lets assume the overall quality and hand-ability of the 43 and 46 are similar... is the additional cost of ownership of the 46 worth the additional space and possible speed? (Understanding this is mostly personal preference) 5. Would one of these hold re-sale value better than the other? Thanks in advance for any input!

Hi Nick. I'm not sure where to start without knowing a little bit about your expectations as well as your sailing skill level. Your questions are framed in a fashion that suggests you are new to this sailing thing. The boats you are looking are older cruising stock. Boats like these, unless unusually lightly used, need a ton of maintenance. Most of the systems, ( like the engine ) are nearing the end of their service life. If you are concerned about "parking" costs, this is only a minor factor in ownership of boats like these. Everything on a big boat and these are big boats, is enormously expensive. For example, a piece of standing rigging on my old 25 O'Day was $89. A new forestay on my Irwin 34 was $495. For these boats, it would be even more. Even if you get a survey on these boats you are looking at, there will be plenty of things that are missed. You could easily spend $15,000 to $50,000 after the sale price. Where do you want to sail ? Irwins are generally not considered blue water boats. That said, many have traveled far. Sailing is about developing a skill set. It is just as much about your judgment and preparation as it is about the capability of the boat. As another example, there are extraordinary street motorcycles for sale in dealerships across the country. An ordinary person can buy a motorcycle that has power and performance beyond what a formula 1 race bike had 35 years ago. Not one rider in 50 has the skills to exploit even one half of the potential of these machines. Of them, not one in 100 has access to a road where this might be done in safety. In this, one impediment is the skill set, the other is good judgment. Do you see how both are necessary to successful use of the bike's potential ? If you can't see what I mean, please view the " Creditcard Captains" on you tube. This is, indirectly, the answer to the single-handing question. Lastly, resale value. The boats you are looking at have lost their original value. They are close to worthless except for the careful maintenance that has been done to them. Some are Gems, who have been cared for without hesitation. The day that this devotion to their care lapses, is the start of their decline. Only you can define their residual value. It can be quite a bit but it will only be a fraction of what it has cost to maintain them. To translate that into English, they won't hold their resale value at all. In addition, the money you put in them will be a poor return, 50% or less, unless it's like a new motor. In that case it will help sell the boat and you might get 60% of the cost back. Hope this frames things up a bit for you.

Another guy who posts one post, never to return. I got to stop taking the bait.

irwin 43 sailboat data

Probably so, Jim. When I see rust stains on the rudder, I know just what that means. It isn't a cleaning issue ! Well, maybe I did some good, if not for this fellow, perhaps the next guy.

Most of the Irwin boats in this range were designed and built for the island charter fleet with lots of motoring and hot comfortable showers and bunks in mind at anchor. The 43 MK I and 46 are comparable boats. The 43 MK II+ is vastly different and far more catered to the comfort below and day sailing ability than the 46, with less storage and more comfortable aft stateroom. The 46 had larger tankage and could motor at least 800 miles on a tank at hull speed. Pay careful attention to the mast step, chainplates (xray is the only way to know) and signs of bulkhead movement and hull shape. Even though there is a defined layup schedule, I would venture to say it may not have been adhered to from boat to boat. Even though most of the Florida West coast boats got a bad rap, they made it possible for the average person to cruise and liveaboard today. Ted Irwin designs are still pleasing to the eye and sail well for their designed purpose long past their design range. Cruisers today are far more conservative and informed than we were back in the 70's with technology. 80% of the time, the boat is in port, or at anchor. Staying longer in a nice comfortable boat waiting for a weather window and now having the ability to track even the smallest of squalls on board is much nicer than putting to sea in even the most capable of boats. Both boats are ICW friendly with maximum mast height of 58. The deep draft 46 requires far more attention to depths and tides. Resale is predicated on two things. Primarily what a bank will loan. As it is harder to get a loan on a boat, values have dropped considerably. Most banks loan to 20 year old boats and few loan up to 30 year old boats. Past that point, it is cash or creative financing only, which depletes the potential buyer pool considerably. So, an 83 in Bristol condition has less value than an 85 in average condition most of the time. Buying a boat for cruising the islands is more about the overall costs as the original reply indicated and the rule of thumb should always be to buy the smallest boat you are comfortable on. Neither is a blue water built boat. Both are comfortable motorsailers well at home in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

Thanks for the information and perspective on the Irwin 43 & 46 boats. My wife and I are considering very brands and models with the intent of sailing as live aboards iin the Caribbean. We find the information beneficial in our decision making.

I'd like to say thank you as well! My husband and I are very close to purchasing an Irwin 43 MKIII -- right now it's down to that and a Gulfstar 45 Hirsch - - I know that both boat were designed for essentially the same type of sailing -- we plan to spend some time in Florida, the Bahamas, and hopefully a few months in the BVI -- I think this boat will work perfectly for what we want.....leaning towards the Irwin.....

irwin 43 sailboat data

Hi all...many thanks for the replies to this thread. I'm heading back to the West Coast (SF Bay area) after an extended stay in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I've been a liveaboard since 2008 on my Soverel 36 sloop (c/b), and have just sold her back to the original owner's daughter. I work from a "virtual office" and can do my SEO from anywhere, so it's back to SF Bay for me (Alameda, likely) since my brother and his family are there, as are lots of family and friends. In researching "affordable" boats in the 40-50 foot range, I've found a few Mk. IIIs for sale in SoCal and WA, and from what I've seen and read, they seem ideal. Since my Soverel is a 1978 model and came with all the usual issues and older, previously neglected sailboat has, I'm open-minded about the potential for "work" needing to be done, large and small. The mention above of rust stains on the rudder and other issues is very helpful! Any further input on their ability to sail in Bay Area conditions would be helpful. While I don't plan on sailing every weekend, I get 8 weeks of vacation with my current job, and plan on using that time for coastal cruising down to SoCal/Baja, and up the coast to NorCal and Oregon. Many thanks! Anton S/V Meridian, Skull Creek Marina Hilton Head Island, SC

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

There are quite some Irwin 43 on the market, in different 'Mk' versions and prices ranging from 86.000$ (86 mod) and up to 175.000$ for 91 mod.
