Most Charming Cities and Towns on Cape Cod

Hyannis Cape Cod

  • Provincetown

Provincetown lies at the northern end of Cape Cod, nearly 60 miles out to sea. The city is revered for its historic center, known for its charming shops, festivals and events (Carnival is in August), and white-sand beaches. Provincetown is also one of America’s oldest artist colonies; you’ll find numerous galleries and artisan markets to explore.

Hyannis may be best known as the site of the Kennedy family compound. You’ll notice that influence today; the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum and John F. Kennedy Memorial are both here. Yet, beyond its history, Hyannis offers plenty to explore so make sure you make it a stop on your Cape Cod yacht charter. Start on Main Street, where you’ll find must-visit restaurants and shops like Cape Cod Beer, or soak up the sun at Kalmus Beach.

Every year, Chatham seems to land on lists of America’s favorite beach towns, and that makes perfect sense. The village is home to some of the Cape’s most beautiful beaches. Check out Chatham Lighthouse Beach, which sits in the shadow of the namesake lighthouse. Harding’s Beach is another favorite and perfect for swimming (as it sits on the calmer waters of Nantucket Sound).

Falmouth may be the Cape’s second-largest town, but yet, Falmouth feels more rural than other villages on Cape Cod. As such, it’s a perfect destination for getting outdoors. Take to Shining Sea Bikeway, a 10-mile path, that offers incredible views of the dunes. Also, check out the Woods Hole Science Aquarium and Lambert’s Cove Beach.

Harwich is a quintessential yachting destination. Thanks to its three sheltered harbors on Nantucket Sound, it’s a favorite destination for exploring the Cape, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. And throughout the summer, the town’s legendary yacht clubs host exclusive regattas like the Sails Around the Cape in August.

Cape Cod Yacht Charters – Things to See & Do

Explore cape cod national seashore.

Featuring nearly 50 miles of dune-lined beaches, a mix of salt marshes and ponds, and beautiful rolling hills, the Cape Cod National Seashore is a tranquil natural destination. Escape the crowds here, and take hikes along the dunes (there are 12 walking trails). Or take to one of three bike trails through the park.

Visit Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge

Explore Cape Cod’s natural history at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge . The park is home to America’s largest grey seal population, dozens of bird species (including five endangered species), and several amazing hiking trails, the park is the perfect place to unwind. One must-see sight: Monomoy Lighthouse is one of the Cape’s most beautiful, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Experience the Pilgrim Monument

The Pilgrim’s landed first on Cape Cod in Provincetown, before landing on the mainland. And in Provincetown, you’ll find a beautiful monument and museum celebrating the area’s history. Make sure you visit the monument while on your yacht charter in Cape Cod. Climb the steps to the top of the 252-foot granite monument for amazing views of Provincetown’s historic waterfront.

Visit Cape Cod’s Historic Lighthouses

Cape Cod is home to more than a dozen postcard-worthy lighthouses, which continue to guide yachts to this day. Take a guided tour of any one of the historic lighthouses and climb to the top for amazing views. The Nauset Light is one of the Cape’s most beautiful, which offers free tours throughout the summer. And the Chatham Lighthouse is another must-see, which sits on an incredible beach.

The allure of Cape Cod as a prime sailing destination is manifold. Firstly, its geographical diversity is astonishing. What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Cape Cod

Navigating the picturesque waters of Cape Cod, Massachusetts is an experience that mariners eagerly await. With its blend of serene bays, bustling harbors, and open ocean stretches, the choice of vessel plays a significant role in determining the nature of one’s nautical adventure. Yachting.Rent, deeply entrenched in the world of sailing, offers a variety of vessels tailored for different experiences. Two of the most popular choices for sailors are traditional sailing boats and catamarans. While both provide distinct advantages, understanding their unique attributes is essential to make the most out of your Cape Cod voyage.

Sailing boats, with their single hull design and long-standing maritime legacy, are a perennial favorite among purists. Their deep keels and streamlined body grant them stability, making them well-suited for the unpredictable Atlantic waves that sometimes grace the eastern shores of Cape Cod. For those yearning to hone their sailing skills, a monohull offers a tactile and intimate connection with the water. The rhythmic dance of heeling to the wind, the harmony of the sails with the gusts, and the sheer thrill of harnessing natural forces are experiences that traditional sailing boats excel in delivering. Moreover, their design allows for easy maneuverability, especially in the intricate channels and tight berths found in many of Cape Cod’s charming ports like Hyannis and Falmouth. With Yachting.Rent’s fleet of meticulously maintained sailing boats, one can be assured of both performance and comfort during their maritime journey.

On the other hand, catamarans, with their twin-hull design, offer a different set of advantages. Their wide beam grants an abundance of space, both on deck and below, making them perfect for family outings or groups of friends. The trampoline area at the bow provides an unrivaled vantage point to soak in the Cape’s scenic beauty or indulge in sunbathing sessions. Stability is another hallmark of catamarans. Their design minimizes rolling, providing a more steady platform, especially appreciated by those prone to seasickness. Additionally, with shallower drafts, catamarans can access areas where traditional boats might hesitate, like the sandbars of Monomoy Island or secluded inlets, enhancing the exploration potential. Partnering with Yachting.Rent ensures that sailors opting for catamarans enjoy state-of-the-art amenities, from spacious cabins to modern navigation systems.

Ultimately, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran boils down to individual preferences and the nature of the adventure one seeks. Whether it’s the allure of traditional sailing, where every gust of wind is a dialogue, or the expansive luxury and stability of a catamaran, Cape Cod’s diverse waterscapes promise a memorable experience. At Yachting.Rent, our primary objective is to match sailors with the perfect vessel, ensuring that their Cape Cod sailing endeavor, irrespective of the boat type, is nothing short of exceptional. With our expert guidance, state-of-the-art fleet, and a deep passion for the sea, every nautical mile sailed with us becomes a cherished memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your cancellation policy?

For a full refund, a minimum of 7 days notice is required.

Cancellations made less than 7 days in advance – but more than 48 hrs before departure time – will be charged 50%.

No-shows and cancellations made 48 hrs or less before departure time will be charged full price.

What if there is bad weather?

Safety is ultimately our top priority.  We will not operate in hazardous weather conditions such as heavy rain, thick fog, high winds or thunder and lightning.  If severe weather cancels your reservation we will make every effort to reschedule for another day.  Otherwise, a full refund will be issued.

However, no guarantees can be made that every part of every day will be perfectly sunny.  So we will operate as usual in overcast conditions, light fog and in intermittent sprinkles.  Guests should dress appropriately for changeable weather and bring a positive attitude!

The final decision on weather related cancellations rests with the captain and reservations should be considered upheld unless we contact you directly.

How early should I show up for my reservation?

To leave enough time for our check-in procedure, we recommend your party arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time.  Leave yourself some margin for traffic or parking related delays, pre-departure bathroom stops, etc.

For Private Charters :

There will be no refunds or credits for customers arriving late.  Trips are scheduled multiple times per day and to ensure that all of our reservations are honored, your tour will still have to return at its regularly scheduled time.

For Group Charters:

Group tours will leave at the regularly scheduled departure time – no exceptions.  There will be no refunds or credits for customers arriving after the boat has departed.

What should I wear? What should I bring?

WHAT TO BRING:

  • A valid form of ID (only necessary for the person who has made the reservation).
  • If your tour/rental has not been prepaid, you will need to bring a form of payment.  We accept all major credit cards and/or cash.  Guests of the Wequassett Resort can also charge to their room account if they prefer.
  • An additional layer of clothing.  Even if its t-shirt weather in your driveway, always assume it will be cooler on the water.  For shorter tours, a sweatshirt or a light jacket is often enough.  For offshore trips, a water-resistant jacket plus a sweatshirt is ideal.  Temperatures can drop 20 degrees when heading offshore and clothing can quickly get wet if fog is present.
  • Please wear boat shoes, non-scuffing white-soled sneakers or relax and go barefoot.
  • Snacks/beverages.  Please see additional FAQ’s for restrictions.
  • Sunscreen (non-spray only).
  • Polarized sunglasses.

DO NOT BRING:

  • Spray sunscreen.
  • Marking shoes or sandals.
  • Hard alcohol.
  • Cigarettes/cigars/vapes (no smoking allowed).
  • Drugs of any kids.
  • Beer bottles or glass containers.  (Wine bottles are fine.  Beer in cans is also fine).
  • Anything that can easily blow away.
  • Dogs or other pets.
  • Large coolers.  Each of our vessels already has a large cooler onboard.  Feel free to bring a small cooler and small bags.
  • Large meals.  It just doesn’t work well on an open, moving boat.  Keep food/snacks simple!

May food and drinks be brought on board?

All of our trips include complimentary bottled water.  Additionally, customers are welcome to bring their own snacks and beverages.

Please remember that you will be eating/drinking on a boat that is moving, open to the wind and may or may not have a table or cup holders (we operate several vessels and each is equipped differently).  Our advice is to KEEP IT SIMPLE and don’t bring anything that you aren’t prepared to eat in your lap.  Smaller snacks and finger foods are easiest and less likely to stain your clothing and our upholstery.

For adults over 21, reasonable amounts of beer and wine are also allowed.  But please remember that you will be sharing a boat with others and these are not party cruises!

RESTRICTIONS:

  • Leave the red wine at home.  On a moving boat it will stain clothing and upholstery.
  • No hard alcohol.
  • Please opt for cans and minimize glass containers in general.  Wine bottles are allowed but no beer bottles.  We will provide plastic cups if needed.

Any excessive use of alcohol will result in the immediate termination of the trip with no recourse.

What happens if my group size changes after booking?

For Private Charters:

The group size you specify at booking will slot you into a specific boat size.  As long as you stay within the specified range (1-6 passengers, 7-12 passengers or 13-18 passengers), nothing more needs to be done.

If your group size grows into the next range of passengers, please contact us to see if a larger boat is available at your requested time.

If your group size shrinks into a smaller range of passengers, please contact us to see if a smaller boat is available at your requested time.

Please contact us directly to add/remove seats.  We have a limited amount of space on our group charters and each seat you initially reserve must be paid for unless you cancel ahead of time.  Cancellations/adjustments are subject to our cancellation policy (please see additional FAQ’s).

Do children and infants count towards passenger capacity?

Yes.  Each of our vessels is rated for a certain capacity by the United States Coast Guard and the USCG does not differentiate between children and adults.  A 12 person capacity means twelve human beings, for example – regardless of age.

Will I get seasick?

Tours that stay within the protected waters of Pleasant Bay carry virtually zero risk of seasickness.  The swell and chop that you might encounter on the open Atlantic Ocean or Nantucket Sound is simply not present within the bay.

Nevertheless, concerned passengers are welcome to experiment with over-the-counter remedies containing ginger, which has been shown to calm an upset stomach.  Consult your physician if you have any further questions or concerns.

Are there any age restrictions or physical restrictions?

Our Pleasant Bay scenic tours are appropriate for all ages and have no age restrictions.

Those with mobility issues must be able to walk down the resort dock (pictured on our About Us page) and step up into the vessel.  Rarely is this an issue, but it should be mentioned.

Are pets allowed on your charters?

On a case by case basis we may allow dogs on our Sunset Cruises.  A few caveats:

  • Dogs are restricted to private charters only.  No group tours.
  • Dogs are restricted to certain vessels only.  Please specify in your booking notes that you will be bringing a dog and we will slot you into the appropriate boat.   Failure to notify us may mean that your dog will not be able to board certain vessels.  No refunds or credits will be offered if your group is unable to bring a dog aboard if you fail to notify us in advance!
  • No more than one medium/large dog per party, or two lap dogs (20lbs or less).
  • Guests are responsible for any damage caused by their dog (scratches, stains, ripped upholstery, etc).
  • Dogs must remain leashed at all times while walking through resort property and on any local beaches your tour may include.
  • We do not stock life jackets for dogs.  Please bring your own if necessary.

Do you provide life jackets for children?

Yes, we have life jackets for all shapes and sizes (even infants).  While we recommend that everybody wear a life jacket on our boats, by law only those 12 and younger have to wear one at all times.  Your boat will have enough life jackets on board for everybody in your group.  Younger children are welcome to bring their own life jacket if they are more comfortable, provided it is Coast Guard approved (no arm floaties).

It took a little learning to use the GetMyBoat website/app. Boat owner Caleb W. was very responsive to messages. You won’t have to wait long to hear from him, most often in minutes, and that didn’t change after the booking. He was prompt in meeting at the boat ramp and the end of the rental day. He was very helpful to accommodate where we wanted to put in the boat in Waquoit Bay or Barnstable Harbor. With the little extra time Caleb provides over the ‘boat rental businesses’ elsewhere, we could cruise more leisurely between Waquoit Bay and Falmouth area and still enjoy anchoring in the shallow water of Washburn Island to enjoy getting in the water. Try to do your boating in waters under 2 1/2 foot seas to enjoy the front of the boat.

Tony and the boat are fantastic. Our family had a very special event and needed a boat big enough for a trip around Chatham lighthouse. Tony was very accommodating to our changing schedule and the trip went without a hitch. Highly recommend!

Bill was the best captain. He was attentive and wanted to make sure everyone was happy and doing what they wanted. We had a mixed age group but they all enjoyed it. Seeing MV from the water and relaxing on the beach in Chappy was a highlight! We definitely recommend Bill!

Caleb was an excellent Captain for a few hours. We had the best time and he was so nice, patient and safe at all times. Highly recommend him.

Andrew

Caleb was fantastic, we had a great time, would do it again !!

We had such a fun time with Captain Bill! This was the perfect outing for our group of 7. Captain Bill had great music and a very clean boat. Awesome time overall. We would recommend Captain Bill to anyone looking to have a fantastic day on the water.

Striped Bass are one of the most sought after game fish on the east coast and along with hard-fighting Bluefish, they represent the mainstay of the Cape Cod charter fleet. Stripers and Blues traditionally stay in our waters from May through October. Offered as a half-day charter (4 hrs).

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna are the largest and hardest fighting of all fish in the ocean. To many, they represent the greatest trophy in all of sport fishing. Fishing like nowhere else..

The Indian River Lagoon is home to a wide array of sport and game fish. Popular species include snook, redfish, tarpon and spotted sea trout. The Space Coast area has indeed been called “The Salt Water Trout Capitol of the World.” Drum, sheepshead, catfish and ladyfish also swim the Lagoon system and its estuaries, making game for lighter tackle. Cast nets are likely to nab mullet schooling in shallow waters of the barge canals and close-to-shore fishing spots. Fishing pole rentals are $10, and we sell frozen bait shrimp and mullet for $5 a bag.    Click to contact us about our Fishing Packages!

Coastal cruising is here and growing: 'A natural transition for any river cruiser'

  • Coastal cruising is one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.
  • Coastal ships have a shallow draft that enables them to dock in small harbors without ferrying their passengers ashore on tenders.
  • American Cruise Lines plans to grow its fleet to 12 coastal cruise ships in the coming years as part of its “Project Blue” series.

EDGARTOWN, Mass. – “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

A terrified Chief Brody uttered one of the most memorable quotes in American cinematic history in the 1975 thriller “Jaws,” a watershed movie filmed here on Martha’s Vineyard , an affluent island 7 miles south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Chief Brody’s panicked assertion was true if you’re trying to catch and kill a 25-foot great white shark with a ravenous appetite for sun-seeking beachgoers.

But when it comes to exploring the small towns, bays and inlets off the coastline of Cape Cod – and other coastal regions in the United States – bigger boats are about as useful as a rod and reel in trying to ensnare a horrifying 3-ton sea monster in Steven Spielberg's movie.

What is considered coastal cruising?

Coastal cruising is one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments. It involves sailing on small ships – typically carrying 100-200 guests – close enough to shore that passengers can see land throughout the voyage. The segment is geared toward older, well-heeled Americans who want to stay fairly close to home while visiting less touristy ports that the big ships can’t reach.

Coastal ships have a shallow draft that enables them to dock in small harbors without ferrying their passengers ashore on tenders. They offer the convenience and intimacy of riverboats coupled with the versatility and stability to sail in the open seas. On some itineraries, they also traverse rivers, lakes and canals.

I recently sailed on a one-week coastal cruise around Cape Cod on the 100-passenger “catamaran-inspired” American Eagle. The four-deck ship was christened in August 2023 and is part of the fleet of American Cruise Lines , the largest river cruise line in the U.S. that is rapidly expanding into coastal cruising.

The Connecticut-based company isn’t just dipping its toes in the coastal cruising market. It has seven coastal cruise ships on the water, with plans for two more ships to begin sailing by the end of the year and two more to launch in 2025. Its newest vessel, American Liberty, will take its inaugural voyage on Thursday from Providence, Rhode Island, visiting several ports in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

“Our newest small ships allow guests to cruise within sight of land and enjoy the same atmosphere found aboard our riverboats, making our coastal itineraries a natural transition for any river cruiser,” said Charles B. Robertson, American Cruise Lines’ president and CEO, whose father founded the company in 1972.

American Cruise Lines owns its own shipyard in Maryland’s Eastern Shore and all of its ships are U.S.-flagged, which allows for itineraries that don’t include a foreign stop. An American law requires foreign-flagged ships sailing in U.S. waters to stop in at least one non-U.S. port of call.

Besides New England, other U.S. coastal itineraries include the Chesapeake Bay with port stops in Maryland and Virginia, a Southeast cruise that visits Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, GA., trips around the coastline of Florida, the Puget Sound in Washington and Alaska’s Inside Passage.  American Cruise Lines also owns Pearl Seas Cruises, which has one coastal ship – the 210-passenger foreign-flagged Pearl Mist – now sailing the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway in Canada.

Rates for coastal cruises are comparable to high-end river cruises and can get pricey. Depending on the cruise line and what amenities are included – like roundtrip air, a pre-cruise hotel, an open bar onboard and shore excursions – fares can easily exceed $1,000 per person per day.  A high percentage of cabins on coastal ships come with private balconies.

All told, American Cruise Lines plans to grow its fleet to 12 coastal cruise ships in the coming years as part of its “Project Blue” series.  Add that its stable of 10 riverboats plying the Mississippi, Columbia, Snake and other U.S. rivers, and the cruise line says it now has a footprint in 35 states.

Cape Codder cruise ports: Provincetown, Plymouth

The Cape Codder cruise on the American Eagle started and ended in Boston Harbor. The itinerary offered a chance to become immersed in the history related to the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World in 1620 aboard the Mayflower and their encounters with the Wampanoag people, who have been living in New England for more than 12,000 years.

We reached our first port, Provincetown, on the northern tip of Cape Cod, just four hours after leaving Boston. I had thought the Pilgrims first landed at Plymouth Rock, but they actually spent five weeks in Provincetown before settling in Plymouth, about 80 miles west across Cape Cod Bay.

Provincetown, known as a boisterous party town, has a year-round population of less than 4,000 that swells to 60,000 during the summer. I climbed the Pilgrim Monument for a spectacular view of the town and harbor. A museum at the monument has a replica of the landmark Mayflower Compact. Signed by the Pilgrims in Provincetown Harbor, the compact is the first document to establish self-government in the New World.

In Plymouth I toured a full-scale reproduction of the Mayflower, the ship which brought 102 Pilgrims from England to America.  Their arduous journey across the Atlantic took 66 days.  From the American Eagle, I walked to the nearby Plymouth Rock, where some believe the Pilgrims first set foot in the New World.  While there is no historical evidence to confirm that, the rock remains an important symbol representing the determination of the nation's early settlers.

We also visited Plimoth Patuxet, a living museum that features a recreated 17th-century Pilgrim village. There are “historical interpreters” dressed as Pilgrims at the site, who interact with visitors as if it were 1627. They stay in character, so it’s best not to ask – as I made the mistake of doing – if the site had Wi-Fi.

Next up: Buzzards Bay, Hyannis, Newport RI

From the port of Buzzards Bay, I took an excursion to Hyannis to visit the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, which showcases the Kennedy family’s deep connection to Cape Cod. The Kennedys had several summer homes in nearby Hyannis Port. The compound, closed to visitors, is still the home of Ethel Kennedy, the 96-year-old widow of Robert F. Kennedy.

It's hard to find a place in America that oozes more money than Newport, R.I., known for its rich sailing history and grandiose homes.

By the turn of the 20th century, many of the nation’s wealthiest families – including the Vanderbilts and Astors – built summer houses in Newport. Today, mansions are owned by the likes of Jay Leno, Judge Judy and billionaire software-magnate Larry Ellison.

Martha's Vineyard, where 'Jaws' was filmed

The island of Martha’s Vineyard, often called “The Vineyard,” is another popular summer hangout for the rich and famous.

We visited Edgartown, a town that took on the stage name of “Amity” during the filming of “Jaws.” We also stopped by the spectacular Aquinnah Cliffs – with its colorful clay cliffs carved by glaciers – on the northwestern tip of the island.

As for sharks, it turned out that it was indeed safe to go back in the water again. The only sharks I encountered on the cruise were emblazoned on T-shirts and other souvenirs in Martha’s Vineyard gift shops.

By Steve Knopper Photographs by Andrew Miller

Steve Knopper is a Billboard editor at large who has lived in Denver’s West Highland neighborhood since 2001.

Catching tantalizing glimpses of the snow-capped Front Range becomes addictive in Denver, whether you’re running through one of more than 280 city parks, gazing through a restaurant’s west-facing windows, or just strolling between breweries and art museums — an activity even more inviting when temperatures start to cool down. While the Rocky Mountains are constant, the city is undergoing a rebirth, although tremendous population growth has come with its own pains, particularly related to affordable housing. Union Station , Denver’s 110-year-old transit hub, unveiled a refresh in July; the 16th Street Mall, a mile-long, pedestrian-friendly shopping strip downtown, is gradually reopening its granite-tiled walkways as part of a reported $149 million overhaul ; and the Populus Hotel , which resembles a giant slice of lemon-poppyseed cake and has ambitious sustainability goals, opens downtown in mid-September.

Recommendations

  • The Museum of Contemporary Art is a four-story collection of provocative video installations, found art and interactive exhibits with a rooftop bar and cafe.
  • Red Rocks Amphitheater , where the Beatles, U2 and thousands of other stars have performed, has panoramic views of Denver and the Front Range in the background.
  • Sloan’s Lake Park offers views of the Front Range to the west and the Denver skyline to the east, as well as the city’s biggest lake, with a surrounding paved loop that is perfect for running, walking and cycling.
  • Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station , an imagination-run-amok immersive museum of Seussian animal mutations, video games and pastel-colored laundry machines, is a cosmic and entertaining way for families to spend three or four hours.
  • Confluence Park , a nook of flat rocks and intersecting city trails near the South Platte River, is close to bars, restaurants, museums and a huge REI Denver flagship store.
  • Union Station , the 19th-century bus-and-train hub known as “Denver’s living room,” has new furniture, murals and more after a recent renovation.
  • The Historic Elitch Theater , a blue, 1890s-era building, still shows movies, offers tours in the summer and stages the occasional play.
  • The Denver Museum of Nature & Science , known for its kid-friendly exhibits on mummies, space, dinosaurs, gems and minerals, offers one of the city’s best views of the mountains from its giant rear windows.
  • The 330-acre City Park includes the Denver Zoo , two lakes, pedal-boat rentals, tennis courts and a golf course.
  • Room for Milly , in the Union Station neighborhood, has plush midcentury-style chairs and couches on which you can sample a sake or sangria and snack on caviar and truffle-flavored popcorn.
  • El Five , in the Lower Highland neighborhood, or LoHi, near downtown, is a tapas restaurant known for its matzo-ball-soup dumplings and spectacular fifth-floor outdoor-patio views of Denver's skyline.
  • Little Man Ice Cream , underneath a distinctive three-story milk can, often has long lines for rich flavors like Space Junkie, a mix of raspberry, brownie bites and marshmallow swirl.
  • The Cooper Lounge , a second-floor cocktail bar in Union Station, offers great people watching, with views of the city on one side and the station’s Great Hall on the other.
  • Ultreia , also in the station, is a tapas fixture that combines comfort food with fast service.
  • Rise & Shine Biscuit Kitchen and Cafe , not far from Sloan’s Lake Park, is notable for its North Carolina-style biscuits of the day.
  • The Edgewater Public Market , one of many upscale food halls that have recently popped up in the metro area, is in Edgewater, a suburb just west of Denver, and includes Ethiopian, Asian and burger booths.
  • US Thai Cafe , also in Edgewater, is a no-frills Thai restaurant that nails the classics in a cramped-but-comfortable room.
  • Convivio Cafe in northwest Denver offers a chocolatado, an espresso drink with chocolate crumbles, befitting the co-owner Vivi Lemus’s Guatemalan heritage.
  • Denver Cat Company , a cat cafe in the Berkeley neighborhood, presents a relaxing way to pass an hour: meditatively scratching tiny ears.
  • Two Hands , along fast-developing Tennyson Street, is an Australian-style restaurant that crams fresh, healthy ingredients into satisfying bowls.
  • Gusto , near Sloan’s Lake Park, serves Italian dishes that include a peach-packed summer harvest salad and sausage-heavy Sicilian pizza.
  • Honey Hill Cafe is a convenient stop for coffee and pastry in the Park Hill neighborhood, before strolling to City Park.
  • Also in Park Hill, the deli at the rear of Spinelli’s Market offers a takeout meatball, red pepper and marinara sandwich and build-your-own options. Ask for marinated onions, and don’t forget your free piece of fruit.
  • Rockmount Ranch Wear has outfitted celebrities and aspiring tourist cowboys and cowgirls in hats and embroidered shirts in its downtown shop since 1946.
  • Feral , a new-and-used clothing and gear specialist, is a highlight of the Tennyson Street shopping district in the Berkeley neighborhood.
  • The locally owned Inspyre Boutique , also on Tennyson, screams “stylish cowgirl,” with fedoras in earthy tones and an extravaganza of denim.
  • The Clayton Hotel and Members Club is at the center of the chic Cherry Creek shopping district, with corresponding luxury. It has a rooftop restaurant and pool, a pool table in the lobby and (as the name suggests) a members-only club offering access to room deals, author talks and other events. Rooms start at around $300.
  • The Rally Hotel , near cafes, bars, music clubs and colorful murals in the endlessly hipster RiNo, or River North, neighborhood, has 182 rooms and a popular lobby bar called Death & Co . Rooms start at around $300.
  • The Artesian has no lobby; keyless entry; small, functional rooms; and few frills. But it’s clean and in a lively central location in LoHi, and an easy walk to Union Station and downtown. It is also next to a wine bar and across the street from a community space for art events and a Latin small-plate restaurant . Rooms start at around $150.
  • Short-term rentals are easily available throughout the city and surrounding suburbs. Central neighborhoods with parks, bars, restaurants and shops include LoDo (Lower Downtown), Baker (which has the Mayan Theater along South Broadway) and Five Points (the historically Black area northeast of downtown, full of libraries and museums).
  • Denver is a great city for walking , whether along its Cherry Creek Trail, which snakes through downtown, or its many scenic park loops. The Regional Transportation District operates buses and light-rail trains (both $2.75 for a three-hour pass) throughout the city and suburbs; coverage isn’t quite as thorough as in bigger cities, though, so check maps and schedules online before riding. The city has teamed up with Lyft and Lime since 2021 for e-bike and scooter rentals, scattered all over town and searchable via their apps.

Museum of Contemporary Art

The downtown Denver Art Museum has van Goghs, Cézannes and 70,000 other works, but the Museum of Contemporary Art , in the rapidly expanding Union Station neighborhood, is a refreshing adventure across four stories of experimental, sometimes bizarre art, and it’s manageable in an hour, finishing with a drink at the rooftop cafe and bar (kids free; adults $14). M.C.A. is closed Sept. 1 through 20, but the nearby Robischon Gallery ’s fall exhibitions are full of vibrant colors (free). Also check out Rockmount Ranch Wear , close by, which has outfitted celebrities and aspiring cowboys and cowgirls in hats and embroidered shirts since 1946. Then walk up the street to Confluence Park , a nook of flat rocks and intersecting city trails near the South Platte River (pretty, but you don’t want to swim in it).

Room for Milly

Catch happy hour (3 to 5 p.m.) at Room for Milly , a bar with plush, midcentury-style furniture on which to sample a Melo’s Sangria (red wine, brandy, peach liqueur, $9). Continue uphill to LoHi, for drinks and snacks at El Five , a tapas restaurant known for “matzo-ball-soup dumplings,” a Jewish twist on xiao long bao ($15), and spectacular views of Denver’s skyline from its fifth-floor patio (opens at 5 p.m.). Afterward, head to Little Man Ice Cream (the one with the three-story milk can) for rich concoctions like Space Junkie (raspberry, brownie bites and marshmallow swirl; $6.75 for a cup or cone). If the line is long, the lesser-known Inside Scoop Creamery on Platte Street serves 20 flavors that are just as good.

Union Station fully reopened in July after a monthslong renovation, unveiling new furniture and murals, as well as the updated Cooper Lounge , a second-floor cocktail bar with city views on one side and the station’s Great Hall on the other, making it an ideal people-watching perch. For dinner inside the station, head to Ultreia , which captures Union Station’s modern-classic ambience with a high-ceilinged room that resembles an art gallery, with wallpaper in the style of a landscape painting that depicts cows and sheep. For a more intimate setting, take one of six tables on the restaurant’s second floor, connected by a tiled staircase with a wrought-iron railing, to enjoy comfort-food tapas like bacon-wrapped dates ($9.50), just-spicy-enough shishito peppers ($10.50) and buttery marinated shrimp ($15.75).

There is no experience like a packed concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater , which has hosted U2, the Beatles and the Grateful Dead over the decades, as the moon rises above the city-and-foothills landscape behind the stage. It’s about a 30-minute drive, or 45 minutes on the Red Rocks Shuttle ($65 round-trip, scheduled for concert times), from Union Station to the nearly 740-acre Red Rocks Park in the town of Morrison, west of Denver. Although plenty of events are left on this season’s schedule, including Brandi Carlile with the Colorado Symphony and Greensky Bluegrass (tickets from $70), it is delightful to wander the trails as the sun sets over the red rocks, even if you can’t make a show (free entry to the park).

A view of a city skyline reflected in a lake, which is in the foreground.

The Denver skyline, looking east from Sloan’s Lake.

A plate with a biscuit filled with egg, cheese and what looks like a piece of fried chicken.

Rise & Shine Biscuit Kitchen and Cafe

Grab a North Carolina-style biscuit of the day (in flavors like feta-oregano or graham cracker, from about $2) at the brick-walled Rise & Shine Biscuit Kitchen and Cafe , tucked away on a north Denver side street, then walk a few blocks to Sloan’s Lake Park . Stroll the 2.6-mile loop around the park’s fist-shaped lake, Denver’s biggest, sharing the path with runners, wanderers, and the occasional bike or scooter, taking in the view of the sometimes snow-capped Rockies to the west and the city skyline to the east.

Stroll into Edgewater, a city of 5,000 just west of the park, to Edgewater Public Market , one of many upscale food halls that have recently popped up in the metro area, with a satisfyingly diverse collection of booths selling everything from empanadas to elk burgers, with ample picnic-table space and a central bar. Get a refreshing pick-me-up at the bowl-and-smoothie outpost Saints or Sinners? or something more substantial at the Ethiopian specialist Konjo (a vegan tray includes yellow cabbage, red lentils and three rolls of injera flatbread , $14). A few blocks north are several local-favorite eateries, including US Thai Cafe , one of the best restaurants in town for classic dishes like pad thai ($11.25) and vegetable egg rolls ($6.50), served in a cramped-but-comfortable room.

Convivio Cafe

Farther north, explore eclectic shops and cafes on and around the fast-developing Tennyson Street in the Berkeley neighborhood. Pop into the locally owned Inspyre Boutique , which screams “stylish cowgirl” with fedoras in earthy tones and an extravaganza of denim, and the new-and-used outdoor-clothing-and-gear specialist Feral . Pass an hour meditatively scratching tiny ears at the Denver Cat Company ($15 entry, discounts for kids, reservations recommended), run by Denver Cat Rescue, then stop by the Historic Elitch Theater , where both Douglas Fairbanks and Grace Kelly performed before they were movie stars. Preservationists have maintained the blue, 1890s-era building, showing movies and, occasionally, plays and giving tours in the summer. Then relax at Convivio Cafe , opened in 2022, with a chocolatado ($5), an espresso drink packed with chocolate crumbles, befitting the co-owner Vivi Lemus’s Guatemalan heritage.

The bar at Gusto

Stick to northwest Denver, where dinner options abound. Two Hands , an Australian brunch-and-dinner spot in a recently reborn plaza at Tennyson and 41st, serves fresh and healthy bowls, like one with salmon and quinoa ($25), as well as a macadamia-nut-pesto cavatelli ($21). Note: The lively dining room can border on loud. Not far away, Tocabe will satisfyingly stuff you with American Indian classics like fry bread filled with meat, beans, cheese and housemade salsas ($11 to $16.50). Or return to Sloan’s Lake Park for Gusto , a sleek new Italian restaurant on the first floor of a condo building, with tall windows overlooking the lake. The pizza-and-pasta-heavy menu has delightful flashes of fruit: The summer harvest salad ($14) is juicy with peaches from Palisade, the western Colorado town known as a fruit paradise, and lemon confit is the star ingredient in the Amalfi pie ($19).

Go back in time with a concert at the 97-year-old Oriental Theater , with an old-school marquee, in Berkeley (tickets from $10 to $500). It’s one of Denver’s many classic theaters, including the 1930s-era Mayan on South Broadway and the 1920s-era Gothic in suburban Englewood. Or enter a strange future at Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station , a trippy, 95,000-square-foot immersive-art museum that opened southwest of downtown in 2021. It’s a mesmerizing place to spend a few hours, especially with kids, interacting with Seussian animal mutations and pastel-colored laundry machines, opening endless doors to rooms with so many LED and neon lights that adults may need to recover in the on-site bar afterward. Tickets from $50. It also contains a concert venue, the Perplexiplex. Best to Uber or Lyft; the nearby parking lots fill up quickly because of their proximity to Empower Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos.

A view of a lake with a fountain, city buildings, and, in the background, mountains.

The 330-acre City Park includes the Denver Zoo, two lakes, pedal-boat rentals, tennis courts and a golf course.

Spinelli’s Market

Grab a coffee (from $3) at Honey Hill Cafe in the Park Hill neighborhood, then cross the street to the deli at Spinelli’s Market for a takeout meatball sandwich ($15) or build your own ($13; ask for marinated onions, and don’t forget your free piece of fruit). Then head to the 330-acre City Park , home to the Denver Zoo , two lakes, pedal-boat rentals, tennis courts, a golf course and, its anchor, the kid-friendly Denver Museum of Nature & Science . The museum’s giant rear windows offer one of Denver’s best mountain views, but if a $26 adult ticket is too much, you can get a similar view in the park, as you enjoy your picnic. In mid-September, the museum is set to open Nature Play, a free public playground with man-made box canyons, beaver dams and a climbable, 20-foot-tall bighorn sheep.

After a long walk through idyllic City Park, head to the nondescript concrete plaza at East Colfax Avenue and Columbine Street. It may look like any other urban street corner, but it happens to be an oasis for culture lovers that comprises Twist & Shout , the city’s best record store for decades; Tattered Cover , a sprawling bookseller and community center for 53 years; and the Sie FilmCenter , which specializes in indie first-run films. (Patrick Brown, the owner of Twist & Shout, has nicknamed the collection of businesses the Cultureplex.) You can easily kill a Sunday here, browsing Twist’s record aisles, then sinking into a Tattered Cover couch with a book and a tea from the in-house cafe before the next movie starts at Sie (tickets $12).
