The 9 Best Marine Speakers

Installing car audio speakers into your boat or yacht may seem like an easy way to cut costs, but regular speakers won’t last very long in maritime conditions. Instead, you should be willing to invest in true marine speakers, which offer sufficient protection from the high saline content of the ocean. To make it easy for you, we’ve put together our list of the best marine speakers available this year.

If this is your first venture into purchasing marine speakers, we’ve included a buyer’s guide at the end of the list to help you better understand what is important when buying a good marine speaker. We also have a comprehensive guide to installing marine speakers on your boat, including a list of the tools you’ll need.

Polk Audio DB651

The Polk Audio DB651 speakers feature woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds which won’t fall apart under stress from moisture and heat, or time.

Quick Pick – Our Awards!

Best overall (our pick).

The Polk Audio DB651 marine speakers offer excellent sound quality and impressive durability thanks to the polymer/mica composite. These features, combined with their ease of installation and relatively affordable price, make this our top choice.

The Best Budget Choice

If cost is your deciding factor, then the Pyle PLMR60 Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers will be the way to go. For around $25, the PLMR60 is really affordable, with surprisingly good sound and durability. They are also a breeze to install.

Best Marine Speakers for Bass & Parties

If you’re looking to turn your vessel into a party boat, you want some bass and volume. If you’re looking for a marine speaker with a lot of bass then you’ll want to go for the Polk Audio DB691 6” x 9” 3-Way Marine Speakers . Not only do the DB691 have a good bass response, but they’re pretty loud too. Keep in mind, if you’re serious about your parties, you might want to include a subwoofer to accentuate the low-end.

Best Dual Cone Marine Speaker

Dual cone speakers are more affordable than coaxial, which is why many people install them. The speakers are often slightly more compact and weigh less than coaxial speakers. While the latter isn’t a major factor, this might be something to consider if you have limited space. The Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual Cone Marine Speakers sound really good.

1. Polk Audio DXi651 6.5” 2-Way Marine Speakers (Pair)

Mount depth.

8.7 x 14.5 x 4.3″

Technical Specifications

1 x 6.5” driver with 1 x ¾” tweeter
60W RMS / 180W Peak
60W – 180W @ 4 Ohms
8” x 4.75”
2.3”

The DXi range includes several speaker sizes from 4” to 6” and the ever-popular 6” x 9”. For this article, we chose one of the most popular DXi speakers, the Polk Audio DXi651.

Drivers & Sound

The DXi651 is a circular speaker with a 6½” low-frequency driver and a ¾” tweeter. The DXi651 is sold as a pair, with each speaker producing 60W RMS and a 180W Peak. This is more than enough power for the back deck of most leisure boats. Even for a bit of a party while out on the water. The DXi651 does lack a little bass. However, this is only if you’re looking for a loud party marine speaker. For general background music and the odd party, the DXi651 will work just fine.

Amplification & Power

To power the Polk Audio DXi651, you want an amplifier with a minimum of 60W and a max of around 100W to 125W. We recommend pairing these marine speakers with the Soundstream Stealth Series SM4.1000D 1000W 4 Channel Marine Grade Class D Amplifier. At 4 ohms, you’ll get 90W RMS per channel which is more than enough to drive the DXi651. If you decide to go higher, be careful not to drive the speakers to distortion, or you risk blowing the speakers.

Installation

The DXi651 is really easy to install. If you follow the user manual, you shouldn’t have any issues. Make sure to use 16-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installation. All the necessary brackets are included with the speakers, so you have everything ready to go.

What’s in the box?

  • 2 x Polk Audio DXi651
  • 2 x Speaker grilles
  • 1″ Self-tapping screws
  • ⅜” Self-tapping screws
  • Speed clips
  • 2 x Spacer/Adapter brackets
  • 2 x Foam rubber gaskets

Polk Audio DXi651 6.5” 2-Way Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re looking for an affordable pair of marine speakers, then the Polk Audio DXi651 is a great option to consider. While the DXi651 does lack a little bass, the speakers produce crystal clear audio and are surprisingly loud. The DXi651 is quick and easy to install with everything you need (excluding speaker wire) included in the box.

2. BOSS Audio MR690 Weatherproof Marine Speakers

6” x 9” + 1”

10.6 x 8.9 x 4.0”

6” x 9” low-frequency driver with 1 x 1” tweeter
87W RMS / 175W Peak
87W – 175W @ 4 Ohms
10.6” x 8.9” x 4.0”
3.37”
8.66”

BOSS Audio design and manufactures an extensive range of budget car and marine audio products. The major benefit of choosing BOSS Audio is you can get everything you need from a single manufacturer at an affordable price.

The BOSS Audio MR690 is a pair of weatherproof marine speakers which can be combined with other BOSS Audio products to build a full marine sound system for your boat.

Each MR690 features a 6” x 9” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter capable of producing 175W peak per speaker. Even though these are “cheap” marine speakers, the MR690 sound really good. I wouldn’t recommend the MR690 if you’re looking for loud “party speakers” for the boat. The MR690 has a nice bottom-end sound, but I certainly wouldn’t call these bass speakers. Mid-range and high frequencies are clear with no issues there. For general use and background music, the MR690 will perform just fine.

To power your MR690 you will need an amplifier with a max of 175W per channel at 8 ohms. We recommend pairing the MR690 with the BOSS Audio MR800 Marine Grade Amplifier. The MR800 will push a little more power than needed, so don’t turn your gain full the amplifier.

You might want to also consider adding the BOSS Audio MGR350B Marine Gauge Receiver too. The MGR350B can be mounted on your dash and features Bluetooth, AM/FM radio, and a USB port.

The MR690 is really easy to install and comes with step-by-step instructions for you to follow. It is recommended you use 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire when installing these speakers.

BOSS Audio MR690 Weatherproof Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re looking for an affordable marine speaker, then the BOSS Audio MR690 is one to consider. With BOSS Audio manufacturing everything from speakers to amps and accessories, you can get all the audio you need from one supplier. The MR range comes in several different sizes, so if you need speakers for different parts of the boat, you’ll be sure to find the right size within the BOSS Audio MR series.

3. Pyle PLMR60 Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers

7.6 x 7.4 x 7.1″

6½” low-frequency driver with 1 x 1” tweeter
75W RMS / 150W Peak
75W – 150W @ 4 Ohms
7.6″ x 7.4″ x 7.1″
2.48”
5.31”

If you’re on a tight budget and need a pair of cheap marine speakers, then you know you can always count on Pyle to deliver. The Pyle PLMR60 is a pair of waterproof marine speakers for a little over $20! That’s an incredible price, but are they incredible speakers?

The PLMR60 features two 6½” speakers with a 1” tweeter capable of producing up to 150W each. Installed as a pair, and you have 300W of power on the back deck of your boat. As is always the case with Pyle, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how good these cheap marine speakers sound. I wouldn’t put the PLMR60 in a bass speaker category, but the low-end response is decent for the price. The mid-range and high-frequencies deliver a decent clarity which most consumers will be more than happy with.

The PLMR60 has a power handling of 75W RMS to 150W Peak per speaker. You shouldn’t have an issue driving these speakers off a standard marine receiver. We found the Pyle PLMRB29 In-Dash AM/FM Receiver with MP3 playback and USB/SD/AUX Inputs is perfectly suited to drive the PLMR60. Alternatively, if you prefer to use an amplifier, the Pyle Hydra Marine 800W Amplifier is a great option to pair with your PLMR60 marine speakers and will work with any controller or receiver.

Pyle has made the PLMR60 easy to install with plug-and-play wiring from each speaker, ready to connect to an existing or new installation. The speakers come with grilles, mounting hardware, and full instructions to get you up and running in no time. If you have an existing system with holes and wiring already in place, you can install your new PLMR60 marine speakers in a matter of minutes. Use a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire when installing the PLMR60.

Pyle PLMR60 Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re on a tight budget, then you won’t find any better in the $20 price range than the Pyle PLMR60. Even though these speakers are cheap, they sound decent and are surprisingly loud too. The PLMR60 can be run off most receivers or even one of Pyle’s micro-amplifiers. Pyle is another brand with a wide range of marine audio products, which means you can build your whole marine sound system using one affordable brand.

4. Kenwood KFC-1653MRW 6.5″ 2-Way Marine Speakers Pair

13.4 x 2.8 x 5.5″

6½” low-frequency driver with 1 x 1” tweeter
50W RMS / 150W Peak
50W – 150W @ 4 Ohms
13.4″ x 2.8″ x 5.5″
2.87”
6.93”

Kenwood is always a good option for a more premium sound. I consider Kenwood a good middle-of-the-range marine speaker in terms of both price and quality. The Kenwood KFC-1653MRW is a great pair of marine speakers with good sound and quality parts.

The KFC-1653MRW is sold as a pair with a single 6½” low-frequency driver and a 1” tweeter in each speaker. These speakers produce a surprising amount of bass and volume. Mids and highs are crisp and clean, with good clarity for music and listening to talk radio or podcasts. With a decent amount of bass and volume, you can use the KFC-1653MRW as background music or even as a party speaker.

Each KFC-1653MRW speaker has a power handling of 50W to 150W at 4 ohms. You can use most dash-mount receivers to drive the KFC-1653MRW marine speakers. The Kenwood KMR-M325BT is the perfect match for the KFC-1653MRW, complete with Bluetooth, AM/FM radio, USB, and CD. If you want to turn these bad boys up a little, you might want to consider going through an amplifier.

The Kenwood KAC-M3004 Compact 4-Channel Digital Amplifier is an excellent choice to pair with your KFC-1653MRW speakers. With two channels bridged at 4 ohms, you’ll get 150W per channel, driving your KFC-1653MRW at their peak rating.

The KFC-1653MRW marine speakers are easy to install. The speakers come ready to plug and play, so if you are replacing an existing installation, it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to hook up the KFC-1653MRW. Go with a 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installing with a receiver or 12-gauge if installing with an amplifier.

  • 2 x Kenwood KFC-1653MRW

Kenwood KFC-1653MRW 6.5″ 2-Way Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re looking for a good-sounding marine speaker, middle of the range, not a cheap brand but not too expensive, then the Kenwood KFC-1653MRW is the way to go. These speakers are really popular, with hundreds of positive reviews online. The KFC-1653MRW is a step up in quality from the cheaper brands at only slightly more money.

If you’re after some real power, you might consider going with the KFC-2053MRW, the 8” version of the KFC-1653MRW. The KFC-2053MRW has a much better bass response and, if paired with the right amplifier, is significantly louder.

5. NOAM NUTV4 Marine Bluetooth Speakers Stereo System

100W – 200W

2.1 x 1.3 x 3.8″

4” low-frequency driver with 1 x 1” tweeter
100W RMS / 200Peak
100W – 200W @ 4 ohms
100W at 4 ohms
2.1″ x 1.3″ x 3.8″

If you’re looking for wake tower mountable speakers, you might consider this complete system from NOAM. The NOAM NUTV4 is an all-in-one system with everything you need to get your wake tower rigged up with some serious sound. This package includes 2 x wake-tower speakers, an amplifier, and a remote with Bluetooth.

The speakers included in this package are 2 x NOAM N4 Marin speakers, each featuring a 4” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter. Each speaker produces 100W RMS with a 200W Peak. Some serious power and a good amount of throw, so you can hear these speakers clearly even from a distance. Obviously, with 4” drivers, the N4 Marin doesn’t produce a big bass sound, but they do have a nice punch to the low end. Mid-range is clean and clear with a nice crisp treble sound.

A NOAM NBTA4-A 4-channel marine amplifier is supplied with the system to power your marine speakers. Each channel pushes 100W at 4 ohms which is a perfect match for the N4 Marin speakers. The NBTA4-A can drive another two 100W speakers on the other channels, so you have enough power to add another two marine speakers if you would like.

Also included is the NBTA4-R Bluetooth remote control. The NBTA4-R control includes buttons for play/pause, track skip next, track skip previous, volume up, volume down, and a power/Bluetooth pairing button. Having the controller mounted on the dash lets you put your mobile or Bluetooth device away so it won’t get wet while still playing audio.

Installing the NOAM NUTV4 marine sound system is easy. Each part is designed to work in harmony with the other, so if you follow the installation instructions, you won’t have any issues installing the NOAM NUTV4 on your boat. NOAM supplies you with multiple rubber pads to fit a variety of mounting bar diameters. Also included are two 11.5-foot lengths of wire for the speakers.

  • 2 x NOAM N4 Marin speakers
  • NOAM NBTA4-A 4-channel marine amplifier
  • NBTA4-R Bluetooth remote control
  • 11.5’ Speaker wires
  • Speaker mounting kits

NOAM NUTV4 Marine Bluetooth Speakers Stereo System Conclusion

If you’re looking for an all-in-one wake tower marine stereo system, then the NOAM NUTV4 is an excellent choice to consider. The speakers are really loud with great sound quality. At under $200, the NOAM NUTV4 marine sound system package offers great value with all the necessary parts to get your wake tower blasting your favorite music.

You can use the NOAM NUTV4 Quad Marine Speaker package for bigger installs. The system is essentially the same but includes two extra NOAM N4 Marin speakers. Only two channels on the NOAM NBTA4-A 4-channel marine amplifier are being used, so you still have two spare channels to drive all four speakers from the same amplifier.

6.   Polk Audio DB691 6” x 9” 3-Way Marine Speakers

125W – 300W

6″ x 9″ + 1”

8.0 x 14.5 x 4.8″

6” x 9” low-frequency driver, 1 x 1” tweeter, 1 x ¾” tweeter
125W RMS / 300W Peak
125W – 300W @ 4 Ohms
8.0″ x 14.5″ x 4.8″
3.75”
5.81” x 8.31”

Another speaker from the Polk Audio DB series is a little bigger and more powerful this time. The Polk Audio DB691 is a marine-certified 3-way speaker sold as a pair. The DB691 is for those who might be looking for more power over the DXi651, which is also featured in this article.

The DB691 is a 3-way marine speaker with a 6” x 9” low-frequency driver, a 1” tweeter, and a ¾” super tweeter (as named by Polk in the  DB series catalog ). The bass response is pretty standard and on par with most 6” x 9” drivers. Sufficient for most applications, but bass lovers will always find it necessary to add a subwoofer. Having said that, the bass response is fine for a boat install. The two tweeters ensure the mid-range and high-frequency response is clean and clear. The crisp highs offer good intelligibility for music and spoken voice.

While you can power the DB691 using a standard dash receiver, it’s not recommended. I will install an amplifier if you want to get the most out of these speakers. This will ensure the speakers are driven efficiently and prevent long-term damage from an underpowered amp source. We recommend using the Rockville RXM-F3 4-channel Marine Amplifier to drive the DB691. The RXM-F3 delivers four channels of 125W at 4 ohms which is perfect for the DB691. You have two additional channels to drive a subwoofer or two more marine speakers.

The DB691 comes with everything you need to install the speakers on your boat. If you choose to go with the Rockville RXM-F3 amplifier, this comes with all the cabling and accessories. So there is no need to purchase those extras. For the DB691, I would go with a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire.

  • 2 x Polk Audio DB691
  • Mounting kits

Polk Audio DB691 6” x 9” 3-Way Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you like the Polk Audio price point, but the DXi651 is a little underpowered for your needs, the DB691 is a better option. The DB691 has a standard bass response for a 6” x 9” speaker, which is more than enough for a boat. If you want to crack the DB691 for a bit of a party on the back deck, then it’s recommended you pair the speakers with an amplifier. A standard receiver won’t give you the power you need to get the most out of the DB691. At under $100 for a pair of 6” x 9” speakers, the DB691 delivers good sound and value.

7. JBL MS6520 6″ 2-Way Marine Loudspeaker

9.0 x 5.0 x 8.0″

6” low-frequency driver with 1 x 1” tweeter
60W RMS / 180W Peak
60W – 180W @ 4 Ohms
9.0″ x 5.0″ x 8.0″
2.75”
5.03”

If you’re looking for a more reliable, premium brand, then JBL is always an excellent choice. The JBL MS6520 is a 2-way marine loudspeaker sold as a pair. As you would expect from JBL, the MS6520 is made from quality parts with patented Plus One™ Woofer Cones, which increases overall sensitivity and low-frequency output.

The MS6520 features a 6” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter capable of producing up to 180W Peak. The sound of the MS6520 can only be described as clean and smooth. The low-frequency response is tight and full with a nice punchy bass sound. The mid-range is clear with a nice clean, crisp treble response. Great for music and spoken voice from radio or podcasts. You can hear the difference in audio quality between the JBL and other cheaper brands.

The MS6520 can be powered by most standard dash-mount marine receivers, so you shouldn’t have an issue adding these to an existing installation. If you are in the market for a receiver, then the Fusion Entertainment MS-RA70 Marine Entertainment System is a good fit for the JBL MS6520 marine speakers. The MS-RA70 does cost slightly more than most receivers, but then you want a premium dash unit to go with your premium JBL speakers.

Even if you have a receiver, I recommend you power the MS6520 using a JBL amplifier to get the most out of your speakers. The JBL MA6002 2-Channel Full-Range Marine Amplifier is a great match for the MS6520, with two channels delivering 60W RMS at 4 ohms. You can also include the Prospec Electronics JBL-PRV175 dash-mount controller with Bluetooth for a full JBL marine sound system.

JBL includes all the screws and accessories necessary to install the MS6520 speakers. Be sure to use a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire when installing the MS6520.

  • 2 x JBL MS6520
  • Speaker wire connections

JBL MS6520 6″ 2-Way Marine Loudspeaker Conclusion

If you’re familiar with the JBL sound, you’ll know their products are always top-notch. You pay a little more for JBL marine speakers, but you get so much more than cheaper brands in terms of both build and audio quality. The MS6520 is a great-sounding speaker delivering a smooth, clean sound across the frequency spectrum. At just under $80, the MS6520 is really well priced in relation to the cheaper marine speakers on the market. Even if you’re on a really tight budget, consider saving for a couple more months to invest in these awesome marine speakers.

If you’re looking for a little more power, then the JBL MS9520 6” x 9” marine speakers are part of the same range as the MS6520. The MS9520 delivers almost double the power as the MS6520 with improved bass response.

8. Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers

6.9 x 6.5 x 2.1”

6½” low-frequency driver with 1 x 1” tweeter
40W RMS / 140W Peak
65W – 140W @ 4 Ohms
6.9″ x 6.5″ x 2.1”
2.5”
5.03”

If you’re a fan of Sony products, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers. A previous version of the speaker had many issues with the cones blowing after being exposed to salt air. This issue seems to be fixed now, and the latest version of the XSMP1611 hasn’t had any complaints.

The XSMP1611 features a 6½” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter in each speaker. The speakers sound really good. Great bass response, clean mid-range, and crisp highs. For both music and radio (or podcasts), the XSMP1611 performs well. The speakers are surprisingly loud, too, so you can crank these marine speakers up for the occasional boat party.

Most standard receivers will drive the XSMP1611 marine speakers, but you should consider one of the Sony marine receivers. We recommend pairing the XSMP1611 with the Sony MEX-M100BT Marine CD Receiver with Bluetooth and Sirius XM tuner. The MEX-M100BT delivers 100W of power at 4 ohms which are perfect for the XSMP1611 marine speakers. If you prefer to use an amplifier, the Rockville RXM-F3 4-channel Marine Amplifier is a good match for the XSMP1611 speakers.

The XSMP1611 is really easy to install, and Sony includes everything you’ll need to get these marine speakers installed on your boat. Be sure to use a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installation. The front grille is paintable, which is great if you prefer your speakers to blend for a better aesthetic.

The XSMP1611 is also available in a coaxial version, the XSMP1621, which is slightly more powerful with improved power handling.

  • 2 x Sony XSMP1611

Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers Conclusion

Fans of Sony will not be disappointed with the XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers. The XSMP1611 performs well across the frequency spectrum with a nice and solid bass response, clean mids, and crisp treble. While the original version of the XSMP1611 did have some issues, Sony seems to have fixed this with no complaints since. The XSMP1611 comes in at under $50, which is a really good price for a premium 6½” marine speaker.

9. Polk Audio DB521 5.25 Marine Speakers

8.0 x 14.5 x 4.8”

5¼” low-frequency driver with 1 x ¾” tweeter
45W RMS / 135W Peak
45W – 135W @ 4 Ohms
8.0″ x 14.5″ x 4.8”
2.43”
5.25”

Another speaker from the popular Polk Audio DB series is the DB521 coaxial marine speaker. The DB521 are sold as a pair and are hugely popular online for their affordable price and good sound.

The DB521 features a 5¼” low-frequency driver with a single ¾” tweeter. The sound quality is good for a 5¼” marine speaker. However, the bass response isn’t as good as the bigger 6½” options we reviewed for this article. The mid-range is present with vocals and instruments sounding great. The treble is good but not as present as you get from a 1” tweeter. One thing the DB521 doesn’t lack is power. The DB521 is surprisingly loud for its size, and a pair should be more than adequate for the back deck of most boats.

As the DB521 doesn’t require a lot of power, it can easily be driven by most standard marine receivers. We recommend pairing the DB521 with a Kenwood KMR-M325BT marine receiver. The KMR-M325BT is a Bluetooth receiver with four channels delivering 50W of power.

If, however, you are looking for a little more power, then the Soundstream SM4.1000D 4-Channel Stealth Series Marine Amplifier is a good option to pair with the DB521.

Installing the DB521 is easy, and Polk Audio supplies you with everything you’ll need to mount these marine speakers on your boat. The grilles are chrome colored but can be painted to match your boat. Like the DXi651, you want to go with a 16-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installation.

  • 2 x Polk Audio DB521

Polk Audio DB521 5.25 Marine Speakers Conclusion

Although smaller than most of the speakers in this article, the Polk Audio DB521 packs a punch. Maybe not as bass-heavy as the 6” or 6½” marine speakers, but the DB521 sound just as good and are surprisingly loud too. You can pick the DB521 for a little over $60 on Amazon, which I initially thought was a little expensive for Polk Audio, but they are worth the money for the sound and build quality.

Buyer’s Guide – What To Know Before Buying Marine Speakers

While we’ve presented which products we believe are currently the best marine speakers on the market, the reality is that each person has their individual requirements for what a product should do. We’ve written this buyer’s guide to help you make informed decisions about the selected products.

Potential Uses

While marine speakers are primarily geared towards boating enthusiasts, they aren’t limited to that purpose. You will even see some marine speakers used sometimes in open-topped cars like dune buggies or even on the patios of seaside houses. The benefit to marine speakers is the protection from salty ocean water, which can prove a problem for beachside residents.

If you plan on using marine speakers in a car, the process is pretty much the same as traditional car speakers (depending on the marine speaker model), while home audio installation may require a DIY approach or the use of a waketower marine speaker option.

Consider the volume of the speakers you’re looking at. While you could theoretically get away with lower volumes inside of the cabin, especially sealed cabins with low ambient noise.

If your prop causes excessive noise, you’ll need loud marine speakers to cut through that sound. We’ve included speakers that will, for most intents and purposes, provide enough volume. Waketower speakers sometimes offer a bit more volume than traditional cabin speakers.

We’ve included the advertised wattage for the products listed, which will help you refine your selection.

Sound Quality

While marine speakers aren’t exactly aimed toward critical listening, nobody likes owning bad-sounding speakers. This is one of the most common problems when buying speakers in a store. You will rarely get accurate feedback around the sound quality, and everything will be sold as a good-sounding marine speaker.

Our list only contains speakers that we think match our standards for sound quality. This means no metalic-sounding tweeters or muffled mid-range.

While price will always factor into the quality of a product, marine speakers are one of the few areas of audio where you can find extremely high-quality speakers at affordable prices.

You can typically get a complete setup with several speakers, amplifiers, and installation without selling a kidney. Our list features speakers of all price ranges but is mostly catered to the average budget.

Coaxial vs. Dual-Cone Marine Speakers

If you’ve researched car or marine speakers you would have come across coaxial and dual-cone speaker types.

Coaxial Marine Speakers

Coaxial speakers are the most common form of loudspeaker used in car and marine installations, available in both 2-way and 3-way setups. The design is such that the tweeter is mounted in the center of the woofer, partially obscuring it. Both the woofer and tweeter are separate drivers with either an internal or external crossover sending a separate audio signal to each.

By mounting the tweeter in the center of the woofer, the speaker’s footprint is greatly reduced, hence the popularity of car and marine installations where space is often limited.

Dual Cone Marine Speakers

A dual cone marine speaker is essentially a full-range loudspeaker with both the woofer and tweeter attached as a single driver. The biggest advantage of a dual cone speaker is the cost, as there are fewer parts. The disadvantage, however, is that without the audio separation, the dual cone speaker doesn’t perform as well as a coaxial marine speaker.

Marine Speaker FAQ

In the FAQ section, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about marine speakers.

What is Power Handling?

Power handling is the lowest and highest power a speaker operates at. Usually, two numbers are indicated, RMS wattage and Peak wattage, followed by the impedance – 2, 4, 6, 8, or 16 ohms. Marine speakers typically operate on 2 or 4 ohms. When matching a speaker to an amplifier , it’s recommended to pair the speaker with an amplifier that’s between 1.6 to 4 times more than the RMS of the speaker . This will allow the amplifier to handle any peaks. However, if your amplifier does not have a limiter, then you want to match the RMS of the speaker with an equal RMS output from an amplifier. Not only must you match the wattage, but you also need to match the impedance. If an amplifier puts out 100W, you also need to make sure you match the impedance, this will be indicated as 100W @ 8 ohms, for example. You need to make sure you have 100W 8-ohm speakers to match this. If you mismatch impedance, you could damage the speaker, amplifier, or both. Often this won’t happen straight away, so people think everything is working fine. But as soon as you get a clip or peak, the speaker will usually blow.

RMS vs. Peak Power Output?

When choosing your marine speakers, you’ll come across two power ratings measured in watts. The lower of these is RMS, also known as continuous power. RMS stands for root means squared and indicates the speaker can operate at this power level for long periods. Peak power indicates the maximum power a speaker or amplifier can handle for short periods. If your speakers are constantly distorting, you have mismatched your power handling, and the amplifier cannot keep up with the speaker. If your amplifier is too powerful, it will blow the speaker as soon as it clips. That’s why it’s important to read the manual and match your speaker RMS and Peak power accordingly.

How Do I Know What Cable Gauge to Use?

Knowing which speaker wire gauge to use can seem confusing at first, but it’s actually pretty simple. There are two main factors, length of cable run and the speaker’s impedance . The first thing you can control is the length. Firstly, for stereo systems, you must ensure your left and right cable runs are identical and as short as possible. So, while it’s fine to have a little slack at either end, avoid having an excessive amount of excess, especially a coil, as this generates heat. The longer your cable run, the more resistance the cable puts on the audio signal. Thus, you need to go up in cable gauge for longer cable runs. Secondly, you need also to consider the impedance of the speaker when choosing a gauge to match the length. Use the chart below as a reference for choosing your speaker wire gauge. For this article, we’ll only go to 8 ohms. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge. Looking at the chart below , you can see why manufacturers recommend using a 16-gauge or 14-gauge speaker wire for most marine speaker installs.

Flush Mount vs. Enclosed Speaker vs. Waketower – Which to Choose?

When choosing speakers for your boat, you have three options, flush mount, enclosed speaker, or wake-tower speaker. Choosing the right type depends on where you plan to install your marine speakers.

What is A Flush Mount Marine Speaker?

The most common marine speaker is the flush mount. The same type of speaker is found in motor vehicles. These speakers do not have an enclosure and are mounted on the cockpit, under the seats, or somewhere inside the boat. Flush mount speakers make the most sense on a small boat because they’re out of the way and take up no room.

What is An Enclosed Marine Speaker?

As the name suggests, an enclosed speaker is a speaker enclosed in a box. These can be your bookshelf speakers, PA speakers, home entertainment speakers, and even soundbars. Enclosed speakers are not common on boats because of the amount of room they take up. There is more space for bigger boats like yachts and sports fishers, so you can mount the speakers on a wall or ceiling. The benefit of mounting enclosed speakers is they often sound better than regular flush mount marine speakers. Enclosed speakers can also be mounted higher up and angled towards a specific area for improved sound quality.

What Are Waketower Speakers?

Waketower speakers are useful if you have a bar or tower to mount the speakers on. These speakers are typically somewhat directional with a narrow dispersion. This means they can throw sound for some distance. Waketower speakers are not known for their bass response, but they can be very loud.

Can I Use Marine Speakers for My Home Near the Ocean?

If you’re installing in-wall or in-ceiling speakers outside your home and you live near the ocean, then it’s a good idea to use marine speakers. For example, the Kicker KB6000 marine speakers will be great for an outdoor patio or other sea-facing areas outside your home. Make sure you correctly match the power handling and impedance, as most home receivers are 8 ohms, whereas marine speakers for a boat are typically 4 ohms.

Hi there; Hoping you can help, I have 4 Sony marine speakers in my boat. I have always replaced them with no problem, the boat is a 2006 Cobalt. I found the model number to the last 8 I had replaced. The model # is XS-MP1620W/XS-MP1620B & SX-MP1610W/XS-MP1610. The circumference of the speaker hole is 5 7/32″, I do not want to carve a bigger hole in the hull to install, I simply pulled the cover off disconnected the wires and reinserted the new ones. They are white and I need 4. Is Sony no longer making that size? Here are the dimensions- Face-is 1 3/18, sticks out a little, not flush, length- inside the hole 3 1/2″ -my diagram shows total of 6 7/8″ needed to install. Will the Sony speakers listed on your site work. I am completely in the dark where speakers are concerned. thank you for your help. Respectfully, Theresa Manfredi-Smith Lake Havasu City, AZ

Hey there Theresa,

While I’m not too versed in that particular model, the cutout size and previous model suggests a 6 1/2″ driver size, which can often be mounted in similar cutout diameters. Have you looked at the Sony XSMP1621? These are very similar to the XSMP1620W you mentioned above. You can find this model available here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0066130KO/?tag=audiostance-amceda-20

I do suspect that these will fit into your existing cutout, with a little room – as the cutouts for these sizes tend to be recommended at just shy of 5″. I’d recommend taking a look at those and then the XS-MP1611.

9 Best Marine Speakers – (Reviews & Unbiased Guide 2022)

Great music makes any experience so much more pleasant, and you only need the best marine speakers to turn your boating adventures up a notch!

However, finding the right ones can be a bit tricky. Wind noise and water splashing can affect the sounds coming out of your speakers. That’s why you should pay attention to crucial features that contribute to better performance and better sound quality, especially if you would want to throw a boat party. Our marine speaker reviews can help you find a reliable and durable unit. More useful information awaits you in the buyer’s guide, installation tips, and frequently asked questions.

See The Quick Comparison Chart

What To Consider When Choosing Marine Speakers?

1. types of marine speakers, 1.1 component marine speakers.

The main benefit of component marine speakers is that you can place the woofer, tweeter, and midrange driver individually around your boat. This contributes to better acoustics so speakers in this category deliver crystal clear sounds.

Normally, you will find them in various shapes and designs, but always attractive ones. If you are up for a dynamic experience when on the water, these won’t let you down. Still, beware of this type of quality requires greater investments. You will also need some skill to mount component marine speakers.

1.2 Coaxial Marine Speakers

Compact and super-easy to install, coaxial marine speakers tick all the boxes for most boat owners. Coaxial marine speakers have integrated a single axis while different drivers are mounted to it. Con woofers are typical for this category of speakers, while the tweeter also serves as an obstruction.

In general, coaxial marine speakers deliver solid sound quality but component speakers still beat them at a couple of levels. Thus, coaxial speakers fall into the category of budget-friendly alternatives with a couple of exceptions.

1.3 Tower Speakers

Towers speakers are available as conical and box-shaped speakers. As these are more powerful than the two previous types, you would have to mount this type of device to the wake tower of your vessel.

If you like having fun with your friends on the water, for example – if you are skiing behind the boat, or if your friends love skiing behind, the conical speakers are capable of blasting music into your direction. Yet, if you still like being more on the boat, but move from one side to another, box-shaped tower speakers that can be mounted in various positions can be a better fit.

1.4 Recessed Speakers

Although recessed speakers offer decent sound quality, you are required to make some changes on your boat if you want to install one of these. In other words – you would have to make a cutout on your dashboard, in a wall, ceiling, or in a panel and fit the speakers in it.

2. How To Measure Marine Speaker Size?

You don’t have to measure the speaker size on your own. Instead, look up for the sizing charts each manufacturer provides. Yet, it’s good to know most marine speakers measure 6.5 inches, with a few exceptions.

3. How Much Volume Do You Need?

It all depends on the water conditions. If you spend most of your time on the lake, you can go with speakers that feature 80Db. Yet, this is the bare minimum you should go for.

Speaking in general, as you can’t predict wind and water moving, we would recommend going for 90Db. This type of speakers can deliver clear sound even when the conditions and the weather are trying to spoil your day on the water.

4. Sound Quality

Decibels are of crucial importance when you are on the water, but a couple more factors contribute to the overall sound quality of your speakers. For instance, you have 2 and 3-way speakers. Is there any need to mention 3-way speakers provide better sound quality?

Yet, if you enjoy listening to pop music, news, and radio, a 2-way speaker might be just enough. On the other side, we would recommend 3-way speakers for party maniacs who prefer the bass thumping.

The type of materials used for making speakers also make the sound more or less clear, but we’ll talk about this more in the following sections.

Marine Speakers Buying Guide

Marine Speaker Reviews

1. Durability

If you like spending days on your boat, you need marine speakers that can withstand heavy use. UV rays and water splashes pose the biggest threat to the durability of these products. However, as these are impossible to avoid, you have to be careful about the durability of the products you are getting.

It would be best to find a set that is resistant to UV rays, as these can be detrimental to electrical equipment. Due to splashes, some units tend to corrode. Saltwater causes corrosion and rust so you should be careful about the extra layers of protection that can repel these harmful factors.

Although the performance of marine speakers is utterly important, some people care about style a lot. A nice, sleek pair of speakers will fit your boat décor and make your stay on the water more elegant and fancy, especially if you have some guests or making a boat party. This will give off the impression you pay attention to each detail on your boat.

3. Amplifier Use

A quality set of speakers is supposed to provide you with nice and crystal- clear sounds. Yet, some stereo systems can’t overpower the sound of wind and waves, which is quite irritating when you want to get some time to enjoy and relax on your boat.

Also, some people simply like it a bit louder than the others, which is when top-rated marine amplifiers come to the rescue. This unit can amplify/increase the sound with boat owners who have already bought low-quality speakers or the ones who want to level up their already good pair.

Yet, you should test your speakers beforehand. Although you will probably be in an open area where there are no people nearby, you should still be thoughtful about the volume your speakers combined with an amplifier produce. At a certain point, you will find yourself in a crowded area, where some people might mind you playing too loud music.

4. Power Handling Compatibility

Each sound system comes with certain limitations, which is one of the most important factors to have in mind before making a buying decision. Limitations of each product can be easily found in power handling specifications.

For instance, some speakers feature higher power handling capacity that makes people think they are louder, more durable, and that they provide maximum sound swag. The truth is – although these are durable and loud, not all units fulfill the criteria of maximum swag.

If you have an amplifier, it is always good to check the specs and whether these are compatible with your stereo or the amplifier’s output. Impedance levels should be compatible as well. Otherwise, you might be facing underpowering or overpowering your marine speakers, which can reduce their lifespan.

5. Activities

Where are you going to use your speakers? Of course – you need them to listen to music, but your activities on the water can make a major difference between units.

If you plan to go fishing, a too-loud set of speakers will drive the fish away. On the other hand, if you prefer waterskiing and boat parties, you need speakers you can hear even if you are a couple of miles away. In this case, go for higher wattage speakers.

6. Installation

It doesn’t matter if this is our first set of marine speakers or you’ve already used them before, the installation process should be simple and straightforward either way. If you don’t think you are skilled enough to do this on your own, you can always call a professional.

Some types of speakers require you to cut holes in your boat, which can be a tricky task for someone who hasn’t done this before. The same applies to install multiple speakers around your vessel.

7. Placement

Marine Speaker Placement

Finding a device that makes it easy to choose between multiple angels when installing will help you and your passengers hear the sounds clearer. This way, the music will reach everyone on your vessel and everyone will have a great time.

When placing your speakers, make them aim as directly as possible at you and your buddies. It’s always good to pay attention to eventual obstacles, as you should try to avoid these.

8. Directionality

This has a lot to do with the placement, but we wanted to explain directionality in an individual section. Most speakers on the market distribute the sound straight, which enhances the sound, especially if you are in a closed room.

Yet, if you are, let’s say – below deck, the quality of the sound will worsen. If you have a large boat, we would recommend pointing into space. You might notice the same speakers installed at different places on your boat distribute the sound differently. Try directing one of them differently or check whether either of them is broken.

9. Magnetic Shielding

Did you know each set of speakers come with magnets? What is more, magnets contribute to the quality of sounds. Yet, these can interfere with some parts of your boat. For instance, magnets can profoundly affect your compass. That’s why you should have magnetic shielding in mind when buying speakers.

Yet, you can also try installing this unit somewhere on your boat that’s far away from compass as well. Either way, we highly recommend you to have in mind your navigation equipment is of crucial importance and you shouldn’t mess with that.

10. Extra Features

Features such as remote control can make using your marine speakers in a more convenient way. Walking to the console every 5 minutes is irritating. Speakers that support remote operation will make it easy to change the song or the station at your top-rated VHF marine radio from the other side of your vessel.

How To Install Marine Speakers?

How To Install Marine Speakers

1. Select The Installation Spots

The first thing you should do is to install placement spots for your new speakers. The area where you are going to mount them should be neat and clean, and the wiring should be dry. Once you ensure the wiring is good, pull it through split looms.

2. Connect The Wires

You will spot different wiring colors – purple, gray, green, and white. These are speaker wires. Next, connect them to speaker wires. If you have one set of speakers, you’ll spot white and white-black wires with the front-left speaker and gray and gray-black wires for the front right speaker.

However, things can get more complicated if you have two sets of speakers. If so, you will have purple and purple-black wires for the driver’s side and green and green-black wires for the passenger’s side speakers.

Strip each wire and connect them to the wiring harness by using a buck connector.

3. Cut Holes

Once the wires are hooked up, mark the holes on both sides – the passenger’s and the driver’s side to cut through evenly. We recommend not going over a 5-inch hole with 6.5-inch speakers.

4. Mount the Speakers

Make sure the negative and positive sides are set properly and hook the wires in the back to your new speakers. Check if everything is set tightly so the speakers don’t fall out. Turn the radio on – the task is completed.

FAQ About Marine Speakers

1. can you use marine speakers in a car.

Yes, you can, but not all of them. Some speaker models are designed as multi-purpose and you can use them on your boat, in your car, etc.

2. Can Marine Speakers Be Submerged?

In a nutshell – no. Although some models of marine speakers are water and weather-resistant, that doesn’t mean these can be submerged. It’s normal that waves can splash some water on your boat, but this is a negligible amount your speakers can take. Submerging them in water would cause permanent damage and failure.

3. Can Marine Speakers Get Wet?

Yes, some models can get wet. Make sure to check in the specs whether your model is water-resistant and if so – that means they can withstand some moisture.

Do you have a clearer image of the most important qualities to look for in a set of marine speakers? Our marine speakers reviews and buyer’s guide include all of the important information you should have in mind before making a final decision.

We truly hope we’ve helped you find the best marine speakers for your vessel. Yet, when searching for units like this, you might want to take a look at other pieces of boat equipment we have reviewed for you – whether it be security equipment, cleaning and maintenance products, or batteries and motors.

The Best Marine Audio Gear: Waterproof Boat Speakers and Stereos 2024

Our picks for this year’s best-of-the-best marine speakers and audio equipment.

Rule #1 about buying audio equipment for your boat: if it’s not specifically made for life on the water, do not take it to sea. True marine audio gear is water-resistant, fog-proof, salt-proof and UV ray resistant. Marine receivers or head units come with coated circuit boards that don’t rust, rubber caps to cover all open inputs, and gasket sealed covers for all controls, knobs, and end caps. Marine speakers and subwoofers are built with plastic cones and rubber surrounds and come with weather-resistant mounting hardware. Anything less than true, marine-grade audio gear, and you’ll be tossing it before the season’s over. Rule #2: unless you own your own cruise ship, smart and efficient use of cabin space is critical, so look for an audio system you know will fit… while giving you the best possible bang for the buck.

Below are our picks for the best of the best by category, as chosen by experts - one of whom is both a life-long sailor and a recent inductee into the Consumer Technology Hall of Fame: our own founder, Bob Cole. So… you ready? Let’s shove off…

  • Sensitivity:  89dB at 2.83 volts
  • Frequency Response:  20 – 2kHz
  • Impedance:  2 and 4 ohms

So perhaps you have outfitted your vessel with some killer speakers, but what about that important bass response? We got the solution for you: JBL’s Stadium-series Marine 102 subwoofer! This marine-grade subwoofer features an IPX5 rating, so you know it’s ready for whatever life throws its way.

The Stadium Marine 102 employs JBL’s patented PlusOne woofer cone for deep and powerful bass response, and their Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI™) to allow you to flick a switch to select between a final 2- or 4-ohm impedance. Adding bass to a boat can be a very challenging prospect. Don’t worry: Kicker’s got you covered with their 45KMF102 10” marine-grade free-air subwoofer. You can get the bass you crave without sacrificing much space at all.

Free-air? What’s that mean? It means that this Kicker subwoofer doesn’t need an enclosure to perform well, which is a good thing for a boat where space can be at a premium. Instead, this rugged subwoofer can be installed into places such as a cabinet, compartment, or in a bulkhead.

Due to the high potential of the subwoofer coming in direct contact with wind, water, salt, and UV, Kicker built the 45KMF102 to withstand all of these elements and come out on the other side grinning. Kicker’s 12” 45KM124 is a wonderful solution and absolutely something worth considering for your watercraft.

This marine-grade subwoofer has a sealed box requirement of 1.25 cubic feet, so it doesn’t take up too much while delivering solid performance. The subwoofer’s durable polypropylene cone repels water with ease and the built-in water drainage system gets rid of excess moisture so the subwoofer can play as long as you need it to. The hardy Santoprene rubber surround on the 45KM124 will keep the woofer cone in-check, ensuring accurate bass response in addition to a long lifespan.

The 45KM124 has a 4-ohm voice coil and handles up to 175 watts of continuous power (and up to 350 watts peak). It’s mounting depth is only 5.5”, so finding a suitable enclosure for the subwoofer should be relatively easy. If you prefer a ported enclosure for this subwoofer, the box requirement only jumps to 1.75 cubic feet.

If protection of the subwoofer is required, Kicker does offer a sturdy ABS plastic grille (Kicker 45KMG12C (charcoal) and 45KMG12W (white) grilles available) with built-in LED lighting.

10 Best Marine Speakers in 2024

' src=

In this article we are diving headfirst, (no pun intended) for a look at the 10 best marine speakers in 2023. The audio-electronics market is literally awash with competing products, which can sometimes make it much tougher to distinguish the good from the bad.

As silly as it sounds, some marine speakers are more waterproof than others. Moisture resistance is measured in varying degrees, so some marine speakers we'll review today may be fine mounted inside a sheltered boat cabin, but won't fare too well against mother nature mounted on a mast in a monsoon.

Table of Contents

At a glance: Our top 3 picks

1. rockville rwb80b, 2. kenwood kfc-1653mrw, 3. kicker white oem, 4. sony 4 xs-mp1611, 5. kicker 11 kb6000w, 6. jbl ms6520 180w, 7. polk audio atrium, 8. kenwood kfc-2053mrw, 9. kicker 41km654cw, 10. magnadyne wr40w, what to look for in marine speakers, why do i need marine speakers, are marine speakers waterproof.

So, for a peek at what's under the hood and how they plan to withstand the weathering on board your beloved boat, we have carefully selected the cream of the crop and picked apart each marine-grade speaker for an in-depth look.

As ever, we've included an informative guide, which should answer some of your recent queries.

View The Best Marine Speakers Below

Rockville RWB80B

We review stacks of speaker options in our articles, so we're no strangers to a rocking set of Rockville's. Rockville manufactures some of the greatest models in terms of bass response on the market, so it's unsurprising that their meaty 2-way marine option offers some high power handling lows.

These marine speakers are designed as wake-board tower models. They easily mount to bars and roll cages. They're ideal for a range of vehicles, but the lengthy measures which Rockville have gone to protect these bad boys from the battering salty sea air make them a superb option for a marine mount.

These marine speakers are fully protected against salt and freshwater conditions. All terminals have been sealed with rubber gaskets. They are waterproof to a high degree and completely rust-resistant.

The woofers measure 8 inches and feature a high-grade polypropylene cone that has been mica-injected. It handles unbelievably well and is centered in a Santoprene surround to help dampen unwanted resonance which can cause bass distortion.

It's coupled with a hard-working, 1-inch dedicated mid-range tweeter, formed with a rigid polymide composite dome. It harbors a high-density, neodymium magnet and effortlessly copes with the delegated upper frequencies, thanks to the outstanding onboard crossover circuitry.

These marine speakers have a high peak power handling of 300 watts (200 RMS), sound pressure levels of around 98 decibels, a great frequency response, and low impedance.

Pros: + Waterproofed to handle outdoor marine conditions. + High output. + Easy to install.

Why We Liked It -These guys have had a few bad reviews, we’re not sure why. In general, Rockville speakers are pretty darn robust, and they handle impeccably under pressure with a high output. This pair is a testament to their top-notch engineering. If you're looking for some great sounding marine speakers, we highly recommend them.

Water Resistance - Though this might seem to be an over-obvious concern for marine speakers, it is worth double and triple checking whether the components of marine speakers are as water resistant as it might appear. It could be the case that the enclosure for the speakers is water resistant but the components, if exposed, are not, which could lead to trouble in the case of damage to the enclosure.

Scott Etan Feiner FOR MUSIC CRITIC

Kenwood KFC-1653MRW

Industry granddaddies Kenwood are a company with plenty of experience under their belts, producing some of the best marine speakers in the business .

Like the Rockville option reviewed above, these have a 2-way classification. While the bass on a Kenwood speaker tends to be more understated than a Rockville, these marine speakers produce very rich and well-balanced audio.

In direct comparison, these two-way speakers are a more compact and somewhat less powerful pair but actually ring up at around half the price, offering great value for money. These, too, are sold in pairs, and their 2-way array consists of a woofer and tweeter combination to efficiently sort the workload of the highs and lows to the appropriate driver for optimal sound performance.

The woofer is 6.5" and formed from a waterproof polypropylene composite. The balanced dome tweeter is just under an inch and is again constructed from materials that can withstand the weathering that marine life subjects a poor speaker to.

The drivers enable a fairly wide frequency response and share their duties harmoniously, thanks to Advanced crossover circuitry enhancements Kenwood has implemented. So if you're looking for a high-quality pair of speakers for your boat, we suggest you give these ones a try!

Pros : + Dedicated woofer and tweeter. + Waterproof components. + Affordably priced.

Why We Liked It - These are genuinely some of the best marine speakers for full-range natural-sounding audio quality . The crossover is seamless and we love that they are priced accessibly. Definitely a better choice for your boat than a boombox,  which can be super risky.

B015DA6VCC

Let's look at what marine-grade speakers Kicker has on offer. If you have read any of our other speaker reviews, you'll know we have a soft spot for Kicker's coaxial contenders.

Now first things first, these babies sell as a set of 4, and if you're truly serious about pimping out your deck, a bulk buy is worth its weight in gold.

They benefit from the same blood, sweat, and tears put into researching optimal driver performance and setup as Kicker's other best selling model.

Additionally and most importantly, many of the components have been refined and redesigned where necessary to cope with life at sea. They have been expertly crafted using only waterproof, rust-resistant, and UV-treated parts. These marine speakers feature sealed motors, stainless steel mounts, and locking terminal covers. M ost marine speakers are made with durability in mind, but these actually exceed some of the industry standards for a water-resistant boat speaker.

The weatherproof woofer is 6.5 inches and injection molded out of Santoprene, like the Rockville's. They powerfully handle the lower frequencies while the tiny 13mm dome tweeter is porcelain/enamel treated (PEI rated) and defines the crisp and crystal highs. They have a good frequency response for a 2-way class set, ensuring superior sound quality no matter what you're listening to.

Pros : + Full-range audio drivers. + UV-treated with water/rust-resistant parts. + 4-pack.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers serve up the same notorious killer full-range Kicker sound. Get depth and definition in a waterproof package, and experience high-end measures which surpass other speakers specifically designed by maritime manufacturers.

Add to this the fact that you get four marine speakers for a reasonable price, and you have yourself a difficult deal to beat.

Mounting Placement - If there is an indoor area on your boat to install your speakers, they will be better off in the long run, with fewer opportunities for damage stemming from unexpected contact with water, inclement weather, or exposure to the elements outdoors otherwise. Even indoors, the speakers must be fully water resistant.

Sony 4 XS-MP1611

This stylish Sony set of four marine speakers makes for an awesome upgrade for your boat. They feature dual cones and measure 6.5 inches. The dual drivers have surprising performance and cope with a fair amount of input. They have 65 watts of RMS power, 130 per 4-pack, and a peak power rating of 140 watts (280 watts per 4-pack).

They are lightweight but very durably built with premium components housed in an IPX5-certified enclosure rendering them waterproof enough for marine use (UV-ray and salt-waterproof).

These marine speakers produce great-sounding audio. The crossover capably deals with the frequency response and workload balance. They have rustproof, low-impedance circuitry that has been refined by their years of expertise in their field. They are simple to mount (they can be front or rear-mounted) - they only require a cutout of 4-15/16 inches and a few standard spade wires. They come in classic black or white aesthetics and have removable grilles.

Pros: + Low impedance. + 4-pack. + Dual cone. + IPX5 waterproofing.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers make for another great sounding bulk buy option. They come from a trusted brand, so you know the sound quality is going to be excellent. W e're a little dismayed with the plastic waterproof grille, but the low price tag has to come with some sacrifices. Luckily, as we mentioned, the sound quality isn't something Sony wanted to comprise.

Kicker 11 KB6000W

Kicker's aquatic combating audio solution comes in the form of a mini-box speaker option. They are a rugged pair for rigging, suited to mounting in the sea breeze and stowing away below deck.

These boat speakers are another affordably priced 2-way classified system with dual drivers and great crossover circuits to deliver an accurate frequency response. They perform really well, effortlessly delegating the workload between the dedicated woofer and tweeter combination. They have great power at a high output, with a peak power of 150 watts (75 watts RMS each).

These marine speakers are easy to mount and come with all the necessary parts. Every part has been designed with longevity in mind. Kicker has coated circuitry to prevent rusting, and it is UV treated. All of the carefully sourced components have been enclosed in a waterproof cabinet, making it adequately equipped for any outdoor application .

Pros : + 2-way class array. + Block/box design. + 150 watts. + Affordable price.

Why We Liked It - These are a well-designed pair of boat speakers. T he enclosure has been IPX 5 certified, so they are ideal for mounting wherever you choose. And with the good sound quality Kicker always provides, you can't go wrong.

JBL MS6520 180W

JBL provides a nice low-profile option for your boat's interior with this reasonably priced pair of marine-grade speakers . They feature JBL's patented Plus One woofers, which are the key ingredient to some of their other best-selling speakers. The ingenious Plus One technology helps maximize the surface area of the woofer cones, a design concept that enhances the high-quality sound response and performance.

The woofer is coupled with a dome tweeter to cover a broad range of frequencies. The tweeter deals with high energy exceptionally well, with cooling in place. Together, they provide audio with real depth and clarity.

These marine speakers have individually voiced drivers and are designed to battle the elements. They feature waterproof motor structures and a one-piece cast polymer basket, sealed magnets, and rubber surrounds as a dampening measure.

Pros : + Plus one tech. + High-quality components, including a rubber surround . + Great value for money.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers are a surprisingly powerful pair with unparalleled dispersion. The Plus One tech is a great addition to the woofers on any JBL speaker system, providing high-quality audio with the best bass response .

Polk Audio Atrium

If you like the mini-box design style of the Kicker KB6000s, then these stylish marine speakers from Polk's Outdoor Atrium series are well worth a look.

They are an exceptional pair that raised the industry standard when they first appeared on the market in 2002. Their recipe for broader open-space coverage and tough environmental endurance meant they exceeded the performance abilities of military specification models.

Their power handling and frequency response is optimized for high-tolerance and durability against the elements. The tweeter domes are made from anodized aluminum and feature rubber surround for deadening unwanted vibrations. The baffles are designed to disperse the sound more effectively in a large area without compromising definition and clarity.

Installing speakers doesn't have to cause a headache. These marine speakers mount effortlessly. The speed-lock system provides easy and safe installation under extreme weather conditions, which only requires the use of one hand.

Pros : + Rugged build. + Treated military-grade components. + Broad outdoor dispersion. + Easy speed lock, one-handed mounting.

Why We Liked It - These are a heavy-duty set of marine-grade speakers that genuinely mean business. The design protocols in place protect against extreme weather, making them suitable for marine environments .

Kenwood KFC-2053MRW

This Kenwood pair is another superb marine speaker selection. In direct comparison to the first Kenwood pair we reviewed, this set offers a slightly larger woofer (at 8 inches) and a lower price tag. For a bargain 2-way class speaker, the sound quality is actually astounding.

The volume levels can be raised without distortion or break up, filling even the largest of cabins. So feel free to listen at a loud volume without worrying about the audio quality of these marine-grade speakers.

They also have a meatier max wattage than the KFC-1653MRW model, totaling about 300 watts, so these little guys are deceptively powerful.

They are also well-balanced. The dual drivers work hand in hand with one another. The lows are pleasantly surprising, providing deep bass, and the highs are crisp and high-def, thanks to the 1” dome tweeter - it performs exceptionally well.

They are arduously engineered, taking Kenwood's specialist audio skills to waterproof depths. All components are treated to be moisture-resistant. The motors are faultlessly sealed for ultimate protection against any marine environment .

Pros : + Superbly made. + Low-priced. + High output and excellent sound quality.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers are a thoroughly thought-out, well-designed pair. They have practically flawless circuitry and are very user-friendly for a quick and easy install. Not to mention, the sound quality is fantastic.

Kicker 41KM654CW

We've reviewed a few Kicker speakers on this list, and it's no surprise why. Providing high-quality sound time and time again, Kicker's audio systems are second to none. These 2-way marine-grade coaxial speakers are no exception. This set of four has a peak RMS power handling of 65 watts per speaker, totaling 360 watts.

They have a heavy-duty, waterproof design constructed from quality materials. Each component has been treated to withstand exposure to moisture. They feature a waterproofed 3/4" titanium dome tweeter. The surrounds are marine-grade rubber composites, and the motor is completely encased.

These marine speakers are fairly simple to install and provide an impressively loud, well-balanced cabin-filling sound, which has wide dynamics, nuances, and crisp details.

Pros : + 4–pack. + Waterproof. + High power output. + Dynamic, balanced sound with great sound clarity. + Excellent value for money.

Why We Liked It - If you have a decent amplifier and aren't too concerned with power consumption, these coaxial speakers make for an impressive upgrade to your stock speakers. They have a very high sound quality, given their low price. If you're looking for new speakers on a budget, these ones offer the most bang for your buck.

Magnadyne WR40W

Amid an armada of pretty poorly performing cheap options, this marvelous Magnadyne marine set certainly makes some waves. They are very well-designed and extremely low-priced, outperforming most marine speakers in the lower-price regions. At around 25 bucks for a pair, their surprising performance is pretty unbeatable.

They are marketed as OEM hot-tub speakers, but they work tremendously well for outdoor and marine applications.

These speakers feature a dual cone design, effectively making the most of compact space and achieving the widest frequency response possible at the same time.

They have a low wattage, so they won't demand too much of your vessel's power. The max power handling for each speaker is 25 watts, but they still manage to pack a pretty impressive punch.

They are moisture, heat, cold, and shockproof. All electrical components are encased, and they come with permanently attached integrated grills. They are simple to mount and work as exact replacements for all OE tubs.

Pros : + Dual cones setup. + Low output option. + Very resistant. + Cheapest product of today's reviews.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers are a very cheap option that still performs well. They're ideal for those on a budget without a lot of options. They aren't the loudest speakers going but for the price, they're pretty unbelievable value for money.

Size - When it comes to marine speakers, bigger hardware doesn't necessarily translate to greater efficacy or efficiency in sound transmission. It is more worthwhile thinking about amplifiers and subwoofers to boost the quality and volume of your sound than shopping around for units that boast size as a proxy for volume and quality.

Marine Speakers Buying Guide

It might seem completely redundant to mention, but water resistance is paramount. There are models masquerading as marine speakers , so you need to know what to expect as standard in a marine-suitable set. All electronics need to be housed in an airtight/water-tight sealed unit. Any metallic components need to be made of metals that do not rust, or they need to be treated to prevent/eliminate rust (rust-proofing).

The surround of a cone is important in keeping your audio noise-free. They need to dampen vibrations that aren't audio wave responses. Typically companies use rubbers and other flexible composites, but the sun can damage these materials quickly - so surrounds should be duly protected either by clever grille designs or UV protective treatments.

In general, if your marine speakers are for your interior mounting, they don't need to be quite as hardy as their exterior counterparts. But seeing as the humidity level, rising damp, and mold can all be indoor cabin issues, the more water they can handle, the better the outcome is in terms of life expectancy.

If you want reasonable audio quality, then a 2-way class system is sufficient to handle a wide enough frequency response. For outside mounting, you will probably want something with a widened dispersion so that the audio doesn't get lost in the open air.

Of course, and importantly, you have to consider your power consumption. Usually, it's better to have something with lower output unless you have the increased power capabilities for meatier audio systems .

Although waterproofing and durability are most likely top of your mind, make sure you pick a marine speaker with great sound. M any marine speakers will have a range of features (such as silk dome tweeters or horn tweeters) to ensure crystal-clear sound quality. Remember, the best boat speakers won't just weather the elements - they'll make for an easy, distortion-free listening experience.

Some audio systems even come with a range of other features, such as LED lighting, and more.

If you don't have a vessel, you probably don't require a marine set of speakers. That being said, their waterproof nature makes them ideal for many other vehicles where using ordinary speakers just isn't possible , such as caravans, camper-vans, and off-road vehicles, including quads which kick up a lot of dust. This is because waterproofing methods are also weatherproof. They're also typically dust-tight as well as water-tight.

They are also ideal for pool surround speakers or installation in spas and saunas, and other locations where there is a possibility that they may get wet.

Yes, they are. The majority we have looked at today are rated fairly highly. However, some of them are water-resistant as well. If you have enough cash to part with, there are many models on the market that are waterproofed so well they can withstand full submersion in liquid and live to tell the tale. To be considered the best marine speakers, they have to tick many important factors off the list. They must be deemed suitable to survive in all weathers.

All circuitry mounting and other metals on your marine speakers should be made from rust-resistant material. Typically this will be stainless steel, as it is relatively cheap and strong.

When we talk about waterproofing, we usually IP rate the enclosure of the item, designating it a number that relates to how 'dust-tight' and waterproof the housing of the product is. If it is suitably dust and airtight, then we deem it protected from water and other particles getting inside to damage internal parts.

The numbers go from 1-7, with 1 being the lowest possible protection. Speakers then go from condensation-proof to water-droplet-proof. Then, you'll be able to find models protected against water spray or low-pressure jets and onto strong waves and temporary immersion. Finally, 7 is the highest rating and indicates the item is protected sufficiently against the damaging effects of prolonged immersion.

Finding a quality set of marine speakers is a far easier task than it once was. You are no longer required to find a specialist store; the world wide web has made it far easier to discover a fab upgrade.

When pimping out your pontoon, you'll ideally want to find replacements that are the same size as the existing speakers for the smoothest installation. As mentioned in our guide, you'll need to consider your power consumption and the capabilities of your amplifier unless you're going for a complete system overhaul with more freedom.

Waterproofing is a technological advancement in which we are far more knowledgeable nowadays, so thankfully, the products available are much better than they once were. With the sheer amount of talent on display from top manufacturers, finding an excellent set of speakers for your boat should be a breeze. That is, as long as you know what to look for. Hopefully, our reviews and buyer's guide will have served their purpose in helping you make an informed purchase.

Expert Tip:

If you are a novice renovating an old vessel, it might be worth looking at some complete systems. If you are completely new to the world of wiring up a sound system, many of the speakers we've reviewed today are designed with a flagship amplifier in mind.

Best Boat Speakers: The Ultimate Guide to Marine Audio

yacht speakers

Ahoy, Boat Owners! If you're looking to amplify your aquatic adventures with some sweet tunes, you've navigated to the right spot. In the world of marine audio, it's important to consider the many factors that go into choosing the right speakers if you want to create the perfect sound experience on the water.

Durability against the elements, sound quality, compatibility with marine electronics, and ease of installation are just a few considerations. Marine speakers are designed to for outdoor use and harsh environments, including salt water, UV rays, and extreme temperatures, ensuring your investment lasts as long as your love for the sea. Whether you're anchoring in a lake sandbar or cruising the open ocean, the right speakers can elevate your experience, providing the soundtrack to your nautical journeys.

Things to Consider When Buying Marine Speakers

Before you make waves with your purchase, here are some key factors to consider:

Water Resistance

When selecting marine speakers, it's crucial to opt for models specifically designed to resist water. Look for speakers that can handle not just splashes but also prolonged exposure to humidity and saltwater, which are inevitable in marine environments. High-grade waterproofing ratings, such as IPX6 or IPX7, indicate that speakers can withstand heavy seas and even direct rinsing. This feature is essential for maintaining the integrity and longevity of your sound system amidst the challenges posed by the open water.

Sound Quality

The quality of sound is always important when choosing marine speakers. You'll want speakers that deliver clear, undistorted audio even in the presence of background noise, such as wind, waves, and engine sounds. A good marine speaker should offer a balance of crisp highs, detailed midranges, and robust bass response. Look for speakers with a high sensitivity rating, as they're more efficient at converting power into sound, which is especially important in the open-air marine setting.

Power Handling

Understanding the power handling capacity of marine speakers is vital to match them correctly with your boat's audio system. Power handling is measured in watts and indicates how much power a speaker can handle without getting damaged. Ensure the speakers you choose can handle the peak output of your boat's stereo system. This compatibility ensures your speakers can deliver powerful sound without distortion or the risk of blowing out.

Size and Fit

Before purchasing, carefully measure the space where you plan to install the speakers to ensure they will fit perfectly. Marine speakers come in various sizes, and choosing the right size is crucial for both aesthetic considerations and the ease of installation. Additionally, consider the mounting depth to ensure your boat has enough space to accommodate the back end of the speakers.

Marine speakers must be built to withstand the harsh conditions of the marine environment beyond just water resistance. This includes resistance to UV rays, salt, and corrosion. Durable materials, such as UV-resistant plastic housings and rubber surrounds, can help ensure that your speakers stand the test of time and maintain performance and appearance despite sun exposure and salt air.

Frequency Response

The frequency response of a speaker indicates the range of sound frequencies it can reproduce, measured in Hertz (Hz). A wider frequency response range means the speaker can more accurately reproduce the full spectrum of sound, from the lowest bass to the highest treble. For marine speakers, look for a broad frequency response to enjoy detailed and excellent sound quality that can enrich your listening experience on the water.

Connectivity

Modern marine speakers offer various connectivity options to enhance your audio experience. Bluetooth connectivity allows for wireless streaming from smartphones, tablets, or other Bluetooth-enabled devices, providing convenience and flexibility in playing your favorite music without the need for physical connections. Some speakers also come with additional features like built-in amplifiers, LED lighting, and remote control capabilities, adding to the overall enjoyment and functionality of your marine audio system.

The Importance of Music on the Waves

Everyone knows that music can significantly enhance your boat days and elevate the mood. It's like an auditory life jacket for your brain, keeping you buoyant even in choppy waters. The right playlist can transform a mundane voyage into an epic seafaring expierence. So, investing in top-notch marine speakers is not just about sound; it's about creating unforgettable memories on the water.

Given music's significant role in enhancing the boating experience, investing in high-quality marine speakers is a decision that pays dividends in enjoyment and ambiance. However, due to their size, they may require strategic placement, especially in areas with limited space.

Tower Speakers : The Adventurer’s Pick

10 Best Marine Speakers

Just because you like the ocean breeze in your face and the smell of salt air doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to enjoy some good music as well. Luckily there are some very good boat marine speakers and wakeboard tower speakers that are designed specifically for your watery escapades.

Ordinary speakers are rarely up to the task of going along on a boat trip. This is because the acoustics on the boat is very different from any other environment and your speakers will need to be able to deal with constant exposure to moisture; sometimes even direct water contact. Boat speakers must not only be durable enough to withstand the elements, but also loud enough so they are not drowned out by the sound of the boat or other noises.

Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual Cone Marine Speakers

An affordable marine speaker that offers quality audio along with the build quality we expect from a Sony product.

With marine speakers, bigger is not always better as some people simply want background music and don’t plan on holding any parties. This means that there are actually a few very affordable marine speakers that offer plenty of value for money. However, there are essentially 2 types of boat speaker installations that you’ll have to choose from.

Flush Mount Marine Speakers – for these you’ll need to be comfortable cutting some rather large holes into your boat if it didn’t come with factory-fit speakers. However, they are stylish, unobtrusive and can blend well with the rest of finishing in your boat.

Tower Speakers – sometimes also referred to as “canon speakers” or “wakeboard tower speakers” are highly directional speakers that can be mounted on your boat tower, facing either towards the front or the back of the boat.

As always, there’s a Boat and Marine Speaker Buyers Guide at the end of this article. Straight to our list though. The first 7 speakers in this article are flush mount marine speakers and we include 3 boat tower speakers at the end to round off of the list. You can jump to either section from here.

The 8 Best Marine Speakers to Flush Mount

Below we look at the best flush mount marine boat speakers currently available for sale online. This list is updated regularly. Let us know in the comments if you have any suggestions or questions.

1. Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual Cone Marine Speakers

  • Power : 65 W
  • Weight : 3.09 lbs
  • IPX Rating: 5
  • Dimensions: 6.9 x 6.5 x 2.1″

Sony is a highly respected brand in the audio world with some audiophile-grade speakers on the market that qualify as a worthy competitor to some of the biggest sound brands out there including KEF and Bowers and Wilkins. As with previous products, they did not fail to live up to their name when they released the Sony XSMP1611 marine speakers.

Although when it comes to wattage, these marine speakers are far weaker than our first choice with only 65 Watts output per speaker. However, you would never guess that it has any shortcomings when you hear the power and volume produced by the Sony XSMP1611’s. But, if you are specifically looking for a pair of powerful marine speakers then the Polk Audio DB521 should be your first choice – just as it is ours.

Now that we have established that the interior of this marine speaker is impressive, we can evaluate the exterior. I was very impressed with both the look and feel of the Sony XSMP1611 speakers. They are available in both black and white and, to be honest, they both look so great, it would be hard to choose one – but I suppose it depends on your boat. These speakers are sleek, beautiful and just plain impressive.

They are also water-resistant with an IPx5 certified design, as well as UV resistant and salt-water resistant – so no need to worry about installing these speakers in your ocean boat, as they will withstand the conditions just as well as on a freshwater lake. They are designed to look and sound as good after years of service as they do when you first purchase them.

Even the cloth speaker surround has been designed for both its look and longevity. It is created out of a treated cloth to ensure it remains protected from all the elements. The voice coil is designed to operate at high temperatures; allowing the speaker to deal with a large range of notes.

The frequency range covered by these speakers is impressive, quality sounds will be played across the 45Hz – 20,000Hz range; ensuring you can hear every rumble of bass and tweet as though the creator of the music was right next to you. What these speakers lack in outright power they gain in the quality and range of sound they produce.

The subwoofer cone is designed to be rigid; this helps to ensure that every bass sound reflects clearly round your boat; you might find this surprising for a speaker which weighs just 1360grams! The fact that the bass cone weighs half of this, at 650g; it may help to explain the quality of sound produced.

The woofer magnet is created from Ferrite while the diaphragm is made from Polypropylene: ensuring it has the flexibility to deal with any frequency of sound.

The speakers are 2.2” deep and should slot straight into most factory gaps without the need for modification.

These speakers sit comfortably in the middle of the $50 – $75 price range and are worth every cent.

Why should you buy the Sony XSMP1611?

  • Trusted Brand
  • Great Frequency Range

2. Polk Audio DB521 5.25-Inch Coaxial Speakers

  • Power : 135 W
  • Weight : 1 lb
  • Dimensions: 8.0 x 14.5 x 4.8″

These powerful 5.25-inches, 2-way marine certified speakers are our first choice for marine speakers for quite a few reasons. First of all, they offer a powerful wattage of 275 watts per pair which gives them a rather high volume range that will guarantee that you can hear the music over the sound of your boat speeding through the water. Thanks to the 0.75-inch liquid-cooled Silk-Polymer Dome tweeter and the high-quality Mica Cone woofer, you will also get crisp and clear sounds with deep bass.

In order to ensure that the speakers will survive the more extreme elements that your boat is bound to be exposed to, the Polk Audio marine speakers contain durable butyl rubber surrounds; these are waterproof. This will not only extend the lifetime of your sound system, but it will also add to your bass response.

Another thing that we really like about these marine speakers is the style. While many marine speakers look boring and cheap, the Polk Audio DB521 has all the features of a truly high-quality speaker that will look appealing on any boat.

These speakers are more than just suitable for your boat, they are IP55 rated and have been tested to ensure they are resistant to water, dirt, UV, salt and even humidity.

In addition, the grills on these speakers are plastic and will not corrode; even when soaked; as you speed through the waves. This attention to detail has also been applied to the speaker cones. The UV protection will ensure that they remain looking like new even after being used for a long period of time.

The speakers are designed to be rugged and tough, even in some of the harshest environments available. But the real beauty of this product is in the balance of sounds. Polk has designed the DB range as  Dynamic Balance speaker which will automatically offer the correct level of bass, mid and treble according to the music you are playing.

The speakers are 4.76” in diameter and you will need a mounting depth of at least 2.01”. It is possible to mount these at an angle as the higher mount only requires a depth of 1.74”. Of course, the enclosure they are put into must also be marine certified; this will help to ensure your speakers last for a long time.

The peak power of these attractive speakers is 300W and they will happily handle 100W on a continuous basis. You will enjoy a good range of sound as the frequency range is 55Hz – 22 kHz.

If you are replacing a 4.76” speaker then these are a perfect choice. They are specifically designed to slot straight into your existing slot and you can even reuse the factory speaker grille; if you wish. The reasoning behind this is that it should be about the sound quality; you don’t need to display these excellent speakers to enjoy the quality and it will certainly help to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

Why should you buy the Polk Audio DB521?

  • 275 Watts Per Pair
  • Crisp, Clear Sounds with a Deep Bass
  • Stylish Looks

3. BOSS AUDIO MR50W Marine Speakers

  • Power : 150 W
  • Weight : 3.1 lbs
  • IPX Rating: Unspecified
  • Dimensions: 6.3 x 6.3 x 3.0″

The Boss Audio MR50W is another speaker that has found a lot of fans amongst the marine crowd. This speaker features a polypropylene woofer cone that has treated cloth surround, which means it is durable and sounds great.

You will also note that the entire speaker is coated to protect it from UV rays, rain, fog and even corrosion. This is important if you take your boat out to sea.

Connecting the cone to the basket is a rubber surround while the tweeter is made of Mylar. In addition, the voice coil of the speaker is made from aluminum; this allows it to stretch a little and handle the stress of high tension. But, at the same time, it is solid enough to provide good note quality. All the major components are treated to offer protection from corrosion. Bear in mind that this boat speaker is water-resistant, not waterproof, so do not drop it overboard!

Mounting the MR50W is as easy as can be thanks to the included template and replacing older speakers with these can be done in a matter of minutes. What impressed me the most about these speakers is the fact that they are able to hold their own against more expensive products, such as the Infinity Reference 612m. These speakers are able to deliver clear and crisp sounds, even at higher volumes, while the bass is also quite good.

The speaker is rated at 150 watts with the maximum RMS being set at 75 watts for a pair of speakers. This may not be as powerful as some of the best on the market but you will certainly be surprised by the sound quality.

A pair of these speakers should cost you less than $35; for this kind of money, they are one of the best options available for the budget conscious boat owner.

If you are looking to listen to some music or radio while out fishing or cruising on your boat then the  Boss Audio  MR50W is hard to beat in its price class. If you plan on throwing any parties or really want to crank the volume you might be better off with more expensive boat speakers though.

Of course, you should also consider the fact that these speakers come with a 1-year warranty which can be extended to 3; at the time of purchase. This shows the commitment and belief that Boss Audio has in its own products.

You may be interested to note that the speaker is 5.25” in diameter and the tweeter just 1”. You will need a depth of 2.2” to mount the speakers effectively and the hole needs to be 4.75”.

These speakers are nearly as sensitive as the Sony’s; offering a frequency range of 80Hz to 20,000Hz with a sensitivity of 89dB.

It is worth noting that this is a two-way speaker and not a three-way one. While it will deliver good quality bass it will not equate to the quality of the bass on a three-way speaker or a dedicated subwoofer.

Why should you buy the Boss Audio MR50W?

  • Great Budget Option
  • 1-3 Year Warranty
  • UV Protective Coating

4. Pyle Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers

  • Weight : 3 lbs
  • Dimensions: 7.6 x 7.4 x 7.1″

If you are looking for great and affordable speakers then the Pyle Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers is perfect for you. With a 150 watt, these speakers are more than powerful enough to play your music at a decent volume, and thanks to the molded ABS plastic basket; you can do so with little to no distortion.

Both speakers are marine-grade waterproof so you won’t have to worry about them getting wet when you take your boat out for a spin. You will have dual cone full range marine stereo sound reproduction so you can get the most out of your music.

With their rust-proof mesh covers, you also won’t have to worry about any rust that might form due to the water and outdoor exposure. This is joined by the speakers’ weather-proof characteristic which will allow you to leave them outside without having to concern yourself with environmental elements.

The speakers weigh 1.78kg, their width is 185/93 and height are 187.96; making them almost circular in shape. The kit which comes with the speakers includes mounting hardware and speaker wire; ensuring you can easily replace your existing ones or add some additional speakers to your system.

You will need a depth of 2.48 in order to mount these speakers correctly and the hole should be 5.31” wide.

Rubber and polypropylene have been used to create the cones and surrounds. This ensures as little distortion as possible and that the speakers will last for years. The voice coil is 1” and made from aluminum which makes it strong enough and flexible enough to produce the best possible sound quality.

They are designed to operate with a frequency of 45Hz – 16,000Hz; the 20 oz magnet helps to maintain the quality of the sound. They arrive with a standard 1-year warranty and should fit straight into an existing slot.

There are some people who have complained about the sound quality so perhaps it is best left up to your own interpretation. Much of this comes down to the fact that these speakers are advertised as two-way. However, the majority of the sounds filtered through will be from the midrange; there is a noticeable bass but it is soft and will never rise to dominate the music. While this may seem like a good thing there are times when you need the bass to come through clearly.

However, having said that, these are some of the most affordable boat speakers on the market which are actually waterproof. The price is generally under $25; it is difficult to argue with the quality offered at this price.

An interesting feature which many marine speakers do not have is the built-in grill. This helps to protect the speaker from the elements but also adds a stylish look to your boat; especially if you mount them in white on a white surround.

However, the vast majority of people who have made use of this speaker are more than satisfied – so let us leave it up to you.

Why should you buy the Pyle Dual 6.5”?

  • Good Value for Money
  • Very Little Distortion
  • Stylish Look

5. Kenwood KFC-1652MRW 6.5-Inch Two-Way Marine Speaker System

  • Weight : 4.1 lbs
  • Dimensions: 5.5 x 5.5 x 8.5″

For an affordable pair of marine speakers that can withstand the rigors of boating the Kenwood, KFC-1652MRW system is hard to beat. Kenwood is a well-known and established brand, of course, and since these are marine speakers you can be sure that they are optimized to work great on a boat.

It features a waterproof polypropylene cone as well as a UV resistant grille and frame, which means bad weather has very little impact on it. Each of the two speakers in this set has a 1” balanced dome tweeter that is built right into the grill

Installing these speakers are a breeze and included in the box are a cut-out template for where to drill holes if these don’t match the holes left behind by your previous speakers. The speed-clips and self-tapping screws needed for the installation are also all in the box.

You’ll hear a world of difference when upgrading from an older, stock pair of boat speakers to these ones as the sound quality is excellent. All the highs on these speakers are crisp while the bass is quite impressive too. The Kenwood KFC-1652MRW speaker system is a great example of why buying the best speakers for your boat doesn’t necessarily mean you have to pay the highest prices. These can be easily picked up for between $50 and $75.

These speakers look good, sound great and are durable enough for even the most demanding marine conditions.

These speakers are only available in white and come with a fixed grill. This actually makes them look very stylish and serves to protect them from all the elements while on your boat; whether rain or salt water spray.

The cone is 6.5” and is made with polypropylene alongside a rubber surround. This ensures the speakers are flexible but able to stand the rigors of UV rays, salt water and even the dirt and salt which is frequently part of the marine environment.

Each speaker is rated at 150 watts and you will receive 2 in your order. They weigh approximately 2 pounds each, while the exact dimensions are 5.5” by 5.5” by 8.5”. The outer grill is 6.5”. Frequency range is impressive, from 20Hz to 20,000Hz.

Each speaker comes with a 1-year warranty; against parts and labor; obviously, you need to have fitted them and be using them in accordance with the original instructions. It is worth noting that you generally need Kenwood specific lug connectors to install these speakers. It is advisable to purchase these before you start the job of installation.

While it is possible to fit them without the connectors it is not advisable.

A pleasant surprise with these two-way speakers is that there is a high-quality bass sound. This is surprising as mot two-way speakers provide a little, soft bass and focus on mid and high range frequencies. The Kenwood speakers utilize the technology that has been devised over the years by Kenwood to provide an excellent range of sound; even when traveling fast across the water.

Why should you buy the Kenwood KFC-1652MRW?

6. MM651UM 6.5-Inch Marine Speaker

  • Power : 200 W
  • Weight : 6.02 lbs
  • Dimensions: 6.7 x 5.9 x 3.1″

If money is not an issue then, the MM651UM from Polk Audio is the marine stereo speaker to get. This is simply one of the loudest marine speakers that are currently available, so anyone that wants to get a party started on their boat needs one of these.

This speaker features a completely sealed front design, which means no water is getting inside. It has a rugged, built-on grille with a tweeter mount, so there is no need for a traditional tweeter post. The sealed crossover assembly is also built into the back of the magnet and it comes with heavy-duty steel input terminals.

The components of this speaker are all non-corrosive and waterproof, having passed all the tests for ASTM certification. Salt spray, UV rays, and fog pose no obstacle to these speakers and even water isn’t an issue. With the woven glass composite construction of the tweeter and the carbon composite basket and grille, this speaker is tough, but lightweight.

One of the most impressive features of this speaker is that all of its components feature Klippel optimization . The result is an unmatched audio performance that leaves most other boat speakers trailing in its wake. Even if you are an audiophile, there is nothing about the audio quality to complain about. Throughout the entire frequency range, you’ll find balanced, detailed, and full audio.

Statistics can’t’ really convey how great this speaker is, but suffice to say its sensitivity rating is 92 decibels and its continuous power handling is 100 RMS watts. Simply put, this speaker is loud and you’ll have no trouble hearing it from anywhere on your boat.

The speaker is easy to install as its cut-out diameter is 5.06”, making it ideal to replace most stock speakers. It also has a shallow mounting depth, which increases its versatility. Of course, all wiring and mounting screws are stainless steel, eliminating the risk of corrosion. The MM651UM is the most expensive marine speaker on this list, but in this case, you really get what you pay for.

The speaker is only available in black but this will still offer an attractive finish to the majority of boat owners. Of course, as the unit, it sealed it is not possible to hide it behind another cover; unless you have a deep mounting space.

However, once you have heard the quality of this speaker you will not be eager to change it! Many of the materials involved in its production are the very latest technologies; allowing the speaker to be lightweight and incredibly high quality.

The magnet is made of a rare metal called neodymium which is exceptionally light. This allows the magnet to be much smaller than in standard speakers and ensures the speaker can fit into small spaces.

Even the basket is made from a carbon composite which will not flex. Alongside this, the engineers have worked hard to ensure the sound quality is perfect through a Klippel distortion analyzer. This ensured the speaker had the right balance between vice coil, suspension, and woofer structure; providing the fantastic sound you hear; should you indulge yourself.

A set of 2 speakers weighs just 4.4 pounds with each speaker being 6.7” by 5.9” by 3.1 inches. They really are a work of art and the speaker to choose if money is no object or you simply have to have the best; providing you can wait for them to come back into stock.

Why should you buy the Polk Audio MM651UM?

7. JBL MS6510 Boat Speakers

  • Weight : 4 lbs
  • Dimensions: 9 x 8 x 5″

For some of us, the best marine speakers are the ones that get the job done for an affordable price and no headaches, if that sounds like you, check out the JBL MS6510 boat speakers. Optimized for marine environments, these speakers will be an improvement from no-name stock speakers, but they won’t break the bank.

These JBL MS6510’s feature waterproof motor structures, sealed magnet enclosures, one-piece cast-polymer chassis, and rubber surroundings to prevent water and other environmental hazards from damaging the speakers. Each speaker is rated at 150 watts and weighs two pounds each. Unfortunately, an IPX waterproof rating is not available in the manuals for this speaker.

JBL’s MS6510 marine speakers have ‘plus One’ polypropylene speaker cones that create better low-end frequency response and crisp, clear high-frequency sound that will cut through the sounds of the sea. For this price range, you aren’t going to have top quality sound, but the sound experience you will get will certainly be a cut above stock speakers or a portable speaker solution.

If you are familiar with JBL’s sound signature you will still hear it with these speakers even though they are marine speakers. This is thanks to JBL’s intensive cross-examining of their speaker products.

Even though these are durable speakers, you may still find your MS6510’s damaged by the rough environments you might encounter while on the water. Fortunately, these speakers come with a 1-year warranty that you can register for on JBL’s website.

Installing these speakers will be a breeze and all of the installation hardware, including a bracket and screws, comes included in the box so you can get out on the water in no time at all.

The sound signature of these speakers is reminiscent of JBL’s many other cone speakers on the market and offers warm basses and crisp high frequencies. You may notice that the treble is more noticeable on these speakers but be aware that these speakers were designed with seafaring in mind, meaning that frequencies that may be muddied by the sound of the ocean surf will be boosted to compensate.

Overall, these JBL MS6510 marine speakers are not the best marine speakers on the market, but they are highly competitive among their price range at #21 on amazon in the marine speaker category. If you are looking for an affordable and hassle-free approach to marine audio you will be happy with a pair (or more) of JBL MS6510s!

The 3 Best Wake Tower Speakers

Below we look at the best tower speakers currently available for sale online. Obviously, if you have a tower on your boat then you are going to be undertaking water sports on a regular basis. Boat speakers mounted in these positions will need to be particularly rugged to deal with the constant exposure to the water and other elements. The following are some of the best available at present. This list is updated regularly. Let us know in the comments if you have any suggestions or questions.

1. NOAM NUTV4 – Marine Bluetooth Speakers

  • Power : 100 W
  • Weight : 8.9 lbs
  • Dimensions: 14.2 x 11.8 x 10.2″

The NOAM NUTV4 is one of the highest quality wake tower speakers on the market and it is not hard to see why. Starting with the sleek black exterior that looks great on just about any boat, you simply can’t go wrong with this design.

In fact, you could easily think that several of these mounted to your wakeboard tower will allow you to boost the power output of your boat!

This speaker is comprised of high-quality materials and offers great water resistance feature that will withstand any and all elements that you might be exposed to on your water adventures.

The cone is created out of high-quality poly injection with a butyl rubber surround and a 1” neodymium dome tweeter to cover the highest notes. The speakers are rated at 100 watts each which work perfectly with the 4 channel amplifier; each channel can be amplified by 100 watts!

The exterior of this impressive boat tower speaker is merely the beginning. The pair of 4-inch, 2-way marine speakers are quite powerful, they have more than enough power and volume to ensure that you hear the music over the sound of your boat speeding through the water. However, as with pretty much any marine speakers, do not expect to get a ton of bass from these guys.

A pretty cool thing about the NOAM NUTV4 is that the pair of speakers comes with a smart Bluetooth remote that allows you to stream your music straight from your phone to your wakeboard tower speakers with Bluetooth 3.0 technology. The remote features backlit buttons and give you control over your music.

On top of that, the system includes a 4-channel marine power amplifier that will give you the most from your speakers. The amplifier can be turned on or off as you desire; depending upon the occasion and the volume required. This is a surprisingly useful feature.

In addition to the speakers, both the remote and amp is also water resistant. Even the remote has a backlit light to assist you when using in low light levels; or at night. The amplifier also has an AUX socket which will allow you to connect other audio devices directly to it; you can enjoy your favorite tunes while blasting cross the water!

This system might be a bit pricey as it generally exceeds the $200 mark; which is somewhat of a downside. But it is well worth it when you consider all the benefits and features that come with it.

The entire package weighs in at 8.9 pounds and is designed specifically for your boat and its 12volt system. You will be glad to realize that the speakers are exceptionally easy to fit onto your wake tower; the clamps are designed to fit bars with diameters between 1.25” and 2”. This is one set of speakers which will make a valuable and useful addition to any boat.

When you order and install this do not forget to allow enough time; your amplifier will need to be hard-wired to your battery to allow continued use, or to the power after ignition for use only when the boat engine is running.

  • Bluetooth Remote
  • Great Sound
  • Quality Materials

2. MCM Custom Audio 60-10031 Black Marine Wakeboard Two-Way Speakers

  • Power : 260 W
  • Weight : 14.8 lbs
  • Dimensions: 23.5 x 13.0 x 15.0″

These wakeboard tower speakers are a close second to the NOAM NUTV4. While they might not be as stylish or come with as many accessories, these 8-inch, 130W black marine speakers make up for it in power and sound quality.  Two of these will give you 260W and even at top speed, out in the water, you should be able to hear your music loud and clear. They do not come with an amp but it is not really necessary, however, if you want to get more out of these marine speakers then hooking them up to an amp will definitely do the trick.

Once again, marine tower speakers are generally pretty weak when it comes to bass, so do not depend on them to make your boat shake. They offer powerful and clear sound at mid to high ranges. You will definitely be able to enjoy your music with these MCM wake tower speakers.

As for the price, these guys are higher quality than many other wakeboard speakers so you will pay slightly more but as I said, you will get a lot more quality and they are generally still in the two-figure range, below $100; so they are still definitely affordable.

The 8” cone is made from polypropylene and is designed to be both durable and flexible; allowing the maximum amount of music and frequency without distorting the sound. They also have a 1” titanium dome tweeter to ensure all the high frequencies are portrayed perfectly.

The frequency response of these 260 watt RMS speakers is an impressive 30Hz to 20,000 Hz and the sensitivity is as good as the best; at 91dB. S with most marine speakers they are designed to operate at 4 ohms.

You will need to have a mounting hole between the size of 1.1” and 1.5” with the overall diameter of these speakers being 8” by 10”. Of course, these can be clamped to your wakeboard tower; providing the pipe is between 1.25” and 2”.

This provides you with the freedom of enclosing these speakers inside your wakeboard tower enclosure or on the bar.

The MCM 60-10031 are waterproof and coated to protect them from UV rays and salt water. This makes them perfect for enjoying those long summer days blasting across the water with someone on the board behind.

The only issue that has been generally reported so far s that the speakers are not always put together properly. The screws which hold the speakers in place inside the pod are not always fastened correctly. This can lead to distortion at volume as the speaker vibrates; it can even cause the speaker to blow. It is, therefore, advisable to verify that the internal speaker is screwed into place properly before you start to use these.

The speakers are only made in black and arrive in pairs; it is possible to amplify them through the use of an amplifier but this will not improve the bass quality. If you are after better bass you will need an amplifier and a dedicated subwoofer; which is marine certified.

Why should you buy the MCM Custom Audio?

  • Good Volume
  • Strong Mid-Range
  • Color Options

3. BOSS Audio MRWT69RGB Wakeboard Tower Speakers

  • Power : 600 W
  • Weight : 8 lbs
  • Dimensions: 12.0 x 11.0 x 9.0″

These speakers look so cool they just had to be on this list. They have everything you want from a wakeboard speaker. The Wakeboard Tower Speakers have power, volume, a totally awesome look, and they even have a bit of bass.

The main things you want from wakeboard tower speakers are power and durability. It should be loud enough for everybody to hear (including the person who is wakeboarding) and it should be able to withstand the elements that it will inevitably be exposed to. With the BOSS Audio MRWT69RGB, you get just that – and a bit more.

First of all, with 600 watts of power, these guys can make a lot of noise. Luckily, out on the water, you probably won’t have any neighbors to worry about so you can just crank up the volume and enjoy your wakeboarding with some serious sound.

As for the sound quality, the BOSS Audio MRWT69RGB is not the best, but it is more than decent. After all, when you are buying wakeboard tower speakers, then you probably need more volume than you need crystal clear sound – so, audiophiles, you were warned, and the rest of you – well you probably wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference.

Another awesome feature of this boat tower speaker is its multicolor illumination which you will see inside the speaker, you can change the colors, brightness, modes, and even the speed with the use of a remote that you will get with your speaker. There is a range of color possibilities including red, green and blue; depending on your mood and the occasion.

The remote actually allows you to control all the functions of the speaker without needing to leave the wheel; this is an excellent feature if there are not many o you n the boat, or you are simply reluctant to give up control.

Each speaker is designed to handle 600 watts; this is 300 watts RMS and louder than most amplifiers will go. Of course, to reach these volume levels you will need a high-quality amplifier and a head unit which is capable of producing the amplification needed. No matter how good the speaker is it will be limited by the power going into the speaker.

The speakers are two-way, as mentioned, this means you are not going to get a heart-pounding bass line. For that, you need a dedicated subwoofer. However, properly amplified up you will have excellent quality mid and treble sounds.

The speaker runs at between 65Hz and 20,000Hz with a sensitivity of 89dB. It is madeofh a polypropylene cone and rubber surround. This maximizes flexibility and ensures it is well protected from the elements; especially when on your boat.

You can purchase the speakers individually but you will probably desire two of them to provide a good balance of sound on your boat.

The speaker is weatherproof although not designed to be immersed in water. It is 6” by 9” and can be mounted in your wakeboard tower enclosure or to the bars themselves. The speaker weighs 8 pounds and can even swivel once fixed to help you get the most from your sounds. Of course, two speakers will provide a much better balance and allow you to really enjoy your music.

All in all, this is a super cool loudspeaker that is sure to make your wakeboarding even more awesome than it already is.

Why should you buy the BOSS Audio MRWT69RGB?

  • Looks Super Cool
  • Can Be Purchased Individually

Marine and Boat Speakers Buyers Guide

Knowing which are the best speakers on the market is not enough; you need to decide which speaker is going to best suit your needs and budget.

You can, of course, simply opt for the one you like the most and attempt to fit it into your boat. However, this is not the most sensible route to take. You may end up with a headache when fitting the speakers, be unable to fit them or simply damage them before you have installed them. In addition, they may eventually look cool; but not actually serve the purpose you want them for.

This is why it is essential to consider the following points and read this guide before you commit to any specific set of speakers.

How Do You Use Your Boat?

The most obvious and often overlooked first point is what you wish to use the speakers for. Of course, you are purchasing marine speakers to fit into a boat.  But, do you spend most of your time on the boat fishing, moving as fast as you can or towing wakeboarders and water-skiers?

The type of activity you undertake will influence the volume level you need for your new speakers.

Undertaking water sports regularly will require loud music; your speakers may need to project their sound to the person skiing behind you. The louder they will need to be the higher the wattage you will need to get.

This does not mean the budget needs to increase but you must consider the quality of the speakers you decided upon when they have a high volume of music going through them.

What’s Your Budget?

You must decide on your budget. Of course, it is tempting to go into the shop or online and order the most expensive boat speakers you can find. However, these may not be the right ones for your needs.

Selecting a budget is important when you buy anything; this prevents you from overspending; Even if money is no object you should consider the comparative worth of your speakers.

This can generally be defined by how much you use your boat and what your disposable income is. Once you have set a budget you will be able to look at which speakers fall within your price range and fit with the activity you undertake on your boat.

Where Will They Be Located?

The next decision is where you will be locating your new speakers. You may simply wish to replace factory speakers which are not performing as they used to or as you would like them too.

Alternatively, it is possible that you have noticed a dead spot in your music setup or a frequency range that’s not being served and need more sound at the front or back of your boat.

If this is the case then you will need to look at two additional factors:

Where – In short, you need to consider where you will be able to locate new speakers in your boat. Every speaker will have its own template regarding the depth it needs and how big the hole needs to be. You must be aware of this before you can start looking at different speakers.

Which – The second point to consider is which type of speakers are you after? Big 6×9’s which emphasize a little more bass or some additional tweeters?

Knowing the space you have and what you wish to fit is essential to successfully choose and fitting your new speakers.

Directionality of Your Marine Stereo Speakers

The majority of speakers are directional. This means that they are only capable of sending music waves in the direction that they are pointing. While there are some speakers which can be adjusted after fitting; the majority of them will not.

You, therefore, need to consider where you need the extra music to be heard; your new speakers should be faced towards this area to ensure it is covered properly.

It is also important to consider the right balance. You can rightfully set up your own marine stereo and really enjoy the music from all sides. At the very least it must come from your left and right. This is why speakers are installed on each side of the boat; to balance the sound.

You must ensure you can achieve this too when you choose the location of your speakers.

Magnetic Shielding

It is important to consider the magnetic devices on your boat. Your compass will be affected if a magnet is placed too near it; this will distort all your readings and cause a real issue if you are navigating via your compass.

Speakers generally have large magnets on them and can affect your compass. This is not usually an issue as marine speakers are located away from your compass mounting point.

However, particularly if you are looking at locating the speakers in your center console, you may wish to check with the manufacturer whether the speakers have magnetic shielding or not.

If they do not then you should not locate them too close to your compass.

Openings For Factory Speakers

The easiest way to replace your speakers is to purchase ones which will replace your factory fitted ones. However, this is not always as simple as it sounds!

Different speakers may have the same diameter but different depths or even screw mountings. While these issues are surmountable it is easier to remove your old speaker first and measure it.

This will provide you with the dimensions of your speaker and the number of fastenings. You can then narrow your search to speakers which have the same dimensions; allowing you to simply drop them into the available slots, connect and screw them in.

You will not need to worry about the directionality of your sounds in this instance; simply appreciate the better quality music.

Inspect Old Wiring & Cage

If you choose to remove your factory fitted speakers, before you fit your new ones it is advisable to check the wiring. There should be no sign of corrosion. If there is then the wires will need to be cleaned and possibly replaced.

If you choose not to do this then the operation of your new speakers will be impeded. You are likely to shorten the life of your new speakers.

It is also important to examine the hole and mounting gear for your old speaker. This will tell you if there is water ingress and where it is coming from. Although your marine speaker is water resistant it will function better and for longer if you keep it away from the water; especially where the electrics connect.

Consider An Amplifier

Depending upon the volume level you feel you need from your speakers you may need to consider purchasing an amplifier to accompany your new speakers.

Just because a speaker is rated at 180 watts does not mean you will get this level of sound from them. It will be restricted to the output of your boat stereo. If this is not sufficient then a marine rated amplifier can provide you with the extra boost you need.

Using an amplifier will also help to keep the sound clear as the sound is amplified and not just turned up; you may be surprised at just how good your music can be.

Consider Your Volume

Having talked about volume and ways to improve it while maintaining the quality; it is also important to consider when you will be using your marine stereo speakers. If you are at sea or on an isolated mooring this should not be an issue.

However, if you are in a marina you must consider your neighbors. There may be people in the boats next to you who do not share your enthusiasm for the latest pop tunes!

It is important to consider them when selecting your marine stereo system. A good quality speaker will provide excellent sound at low levels as well as high; allowing you to enjoy your music no matter where you are.

You should also remember that sounds over 85 decibels can cause permanent damage to your hearing, while anything over 100dB can cause a serious issue with just 15 minutes of listening.

Water Resistance

Finally, you should be looking at the water-resistance or IPX rating on your marine speakers. Water-resistant is not the same as waterproof. This means they are able to handle some rain or sea spray.

Waterproof suggests they are better able to handle been dumped into a bucket of water. However, even waterproof speakers are not designed to stay in the water.

It is best to get waterproof if you think they will often be getting wet, but do your best to keep them dry!

Water-resistant and waterproof speakers can be washed to keep them looking good, but never use a pressure washer on them!

Choosing the right marine speakers for your needs does not need to be an arduous task. You simply need to follow this guide to ensure you have considered all the important elements before you even look at the best speakers for your needs.

This will help to ensure that you purchase a boat speaker that will do what you want it to; within the price range, you have specified. If not, you may simply buy one because it looks good and it may not perform how you hope.

The speakers listed in this guide all offer quality sound, depending upon the funds you are prepared to spend; choose wisely and you can enjoy your music for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

A marine speaker is a type of speaker specifically designed for use in boats and other watercraft. Good quality Marine speakers are specifically built to withstand the harsh marine environment, including exposure to saltwater, moisture, extreme temperatures, and the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Marine speakers are built to withstand the elements that can damage regular speakers and cause them to deteriorate and rust in a marine environment exposed to saltwater, moisture, and UV rays. Marine speakers are typically designed to be waterproof and feature rust-proof hardware, making them ideal for use in boats and other watercraft.

The best size of marine speaker to install in a boat will depend on the size of the boat and the desired sound quality. Typically, 6.5-inch or 8-inch speakers are popular options for most boats.

Yes, marine speakers can be used for other outdoor activities, such as camping, tailgating, or outdoor parties. Since marine speakers are specifically designed to resist exposure to the outdoor elements such as moisture, dust and UV rays, they will perform nicely in other outdoor environments as well.

The power handling capability of a marine speaker are typically measured in Watts RMS and Watts peak. The RMS power handling is the continuous power a speaker can handle, while the peak power handling is the same power rating, expressed as instantaneous power a speaker can handle for a short period of time. It is important to match the power handling capability of the speakers to the power output of your boat's amplifier system.  We always suggest using the continuous power (Watts RMS) ratings when matching speakers to amplifiers.

The Marine Stereo and Boat Audio Experts

Why should you use marine stereo gear.

Some boating enthusiasts use car audio equipment in their boats to get the sound they want when they are on the water. It seems to make sense because car stereos are cheap, easy to find and most boats have a 12-volt electrical system, just like an automobile. However, car audio gear is designed to be installed in an enclosed vehicle where it will be safe from rain, splashing, humidity and salt air. There are some important drawbacks to using it on your boat that you should know about.

Typical life expectancy for a car stereo that is is exposed to a marine environment on a boat is about 1 year. You might get more life than that, but you might also get less. Corrosion is the main problem since the copper in the circuit boards is very vulnerable. Even if the stereo doesn’t get wet, there is the moisture and sometimes salt in the air to contend with.

Better Than Car Audio

By contrast, a marine stereo will have circuit boards that are dipped in a liquid plastic or resin. The liquid plastic dries to form a thin, transparent, protective covering over the entire board, sealing all of the copper from exposure to the air. After this process, manufacturers will examine the boards under an ultraviolet light. The plastic is UV reactive so it will glow under the ultraviolet light which makes it easy to see any flaws in the coating which can be corrected. This manufacturing process adds years of life to a boat stereo that a car stereo will never survive.

Some marine stereo head units are completely sealed and waterproof. They can be splashed and rained on with no ill effects. These units use rubber gaskets to seal the access doors and the chassis is made of stainless steel, or heavy-duty ABS plastic rather than galvanized steel.

Longer Life For Speakers

Many people don’t realize that car speakers, and most any other speakers that are not designed for the outdoors, are made with paper cones. Paper sounds cheap and flimsey, but the paper used in speaker cones is actually more like a thin cardboard material. Manufacturers don’t use paper because they are cutting corners to save money. Some of the most expensive speakers you can buy are made with paper because it is an excellent material for sound reproduction. A lot of time and effort goes into engineering the paper to the perfect specifications for optimal sound quality.

That having been said, it doesn’t take much of an imagination to picture in your mind what happens to a paper speaker cone when it is exposed to water. Typical car stereo speakers may not last an afternoon on a boat let alone a year or more. Marine speakers use waterproof materials like mylar or polypropylene instead of paper. These materials closely approximate the resonance properties of paper with the added benefit of being waterproof. So, you get excellent sound quality and durability too. As you might expect, boat speakers are usually a little more expensive than car speakers, but the benefits greatly outweigh the cost.

Marine speakers are waterproof speakers which means they are impervious to rain, splashing and even hosing down according to standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials . However, they are not typically designed to be submerged. Submersion requires resistance to water pressure that isn’t a factor in the manufacturing process. While most boat speakers can withstand a quick dip in the water, it would be very difficult to find a manufacturer that says it’s not a problem to submerge their speakers. Besides that, they sound terrible underwater!

"As a builder, I've had problems with speakers in Harley-Davidson's. I took a full set of 6.5" and a set of 8" REVO speakers and integrated them into a road glide over a year ago. Absolutely amazing sound and incredibly loud. We rode this bike across the country for almost 6,000 miles in eight straight days of rain and still not one single problem with the speakers. "
“You guys are the best, thank you. We all look forward to the future with Wet Sounds and Sea Hunter and we will continue to push this amazing product. The display sounds incredible BTW!"

Mark Berta - Seahunter Boats

“Customer service is top notch. Wet Sounds and their whole team always provide great customer service in a super high quality product. Can't wait to see what new innovative products they come out with next. I highly recommend Wet Sounds and their products. ”
“B esides the usual “everyone at Wet Sounds is professional, courteous and quick to resolve any issues” (which is totally applicable), there’s also a unique vibe they all seem to radiate.  Even my very first contacts with any of the Reps were met with a very personable response, like we were old friends.  They have been very patient while trying to explain the difference between products and usually offer some images for a better understanding.  We all just work very well together, always have the end customer in mind and can easily banter back and forth for a more enjoyable experience.  Jay has been my right hand with all WS products and has been invaluable helping me keep up with our service demands. In a nutshell, WS is full of people I would hang out with at the skating rink!

Kerri Johns - Malibu Boats, Inc.

“Nothing but the best. The Best sound, the loudest sound, and amazing customer service to help thru the way!”

Richard Gusman

“You guys rock! My boat is all Wet Sounds (4-5.25, 2-10" loud speakers, two 10" subs and 2-6.5 speakers and now three Wet Sounds Amps) and this is why I continue to spend my money on such a high quality product from a high quality customer service team! You are appreciated!"

Boat Stone Lumos

SINGAPORE: As Singapore's  Speaker of Parliament , Mr Seah Kian Peng believes that he consciously makes an effort to apply the rules and oversee proceedings in an impartial manner.

“So that whoever and whichever party they are from, will feel that ... the way I've chaired, the way I've called on people, I’ve done it fairly and consistently,” he told CNA.

Mr Seah, who is also Member of Parliament (MP) for Marine Parade GRC, marked his first year on the job earlier in August .

And a recent incident involving  Non-Constituency MP Leong Mun Wai  served to reaffirm Mr Seah's belief that what is said in parliament is "serious business".

Mr Leong, a member of the opposition Progress Singapore Party’s (PSP) central executive committee, had said on a podcast that he was usually “one of the last to be called” to speak in parliament, despite being one of the first to raise his hands.

Though he eventually publicly retracted the comment, Mr Leong’s words had still cast aspersions on the Speaker’s fairness and impartiality, Mr Seah said in a July sitting.

“Anyway, I think he put it on record that, yes, I was fair,” said Mr Seah, 62.

He noted that with over 100 members in the House currently, including non-partisan Nominated MPs, it was only natural for questions to arise over opportunities to speak.

“I was a backbencher before, so I also felt that ‘Speaker how come don't give me time to speak' (feeling),” he said.

INTO THE DEEP END

Mr Seah recalled how he took up the office of the Speaker of Parliament during what he called a "difficult period" for Singapore's political parties.

"That very first day itself, there was a motion that was filed to talk about the impartial role of the Speaker,” he said.

That had been filed by the PSP, after a hot mic incident with former Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin muttering “f****** populist" in response to a speech by opposition MP Jamus Lim.

But before the motion could be debated, Mr Tan  resigned  over  an affair  with fellow ruling party MP Cheng Li Hui. Days later, opposition Workers' Party members  Leon Perera  and  Nicole Seah  also stepped down over an extramarital affair.

Mr Seah then presided over the debate on the very first day of his job.

He considers it as one defining moment of his tenure thus far, as he was thrown “straight into the deep end” and on "rather short notice".

“One minute you were at the backbench, and then the next minute, you assumed the chair."

STRESSES OF A DIFFERENT KIND

Upon becoming Speaker, Mr Seah stepped down from his role as group CEO of NTUC Enterprise and from the boards of its social enterprises.

He had spent a large part of his career with the labour movement's group of companies, helming different portfolios.

“I freed myself from corporate and commercial stresses, but at the same time, I took on stresses of a different kind,” he said.

One obvious pressure while chairing parliament sittings lies in deciding who to call on to speak, though Mr Seah said “it's not rocket science”.

“If you had spoken on a Bill; obviously if you have clarifications, I should give those who had spoken the first right. Those who did not speak, but subsequently have a point of view, yes, but they will be second order."

The same goes for parliamentary questions, where time is of the essence with an allocated duration of 90 minutes.

“You also want to make sure that you move things along,” said Mr Seah, adding that he cuts in when necessary, and for members on both sides of the House, regardless of party affiliation.

With a general election on the horizon, Mr Seah said members should be mindful about not using parliament as part of "electioneering".

"If it is against the standing orders, I will call them out.”

"A BIT MORE HEATED UP"

Mr Seah, who first entered politics in 2006, has for nearly two decades observed changes brought about by the increased opposition presence in the House.

“There is probably more contestation. And I guess sometimes some debates get a bit more heated up,” he said.

With a rise also in the overall number of MPs, more parliamentary questions and more adjournment motions are being filed for each sitting, he added.

“The last sitting, we had five members who wanted to file adjournment motions. But we had a two-day sitting, so obviously only two of them could speak. There are also more private members bills as well,” said Mr Seah.

He traced this partly to MPs now having “stronger convictions” on certain issues.

These days, Mr Seah also has his hands full overseeing events and ceremonies by the President's Office - some of which are now held at Parliament House due to the Istana undergoing major renovations.

This arrangement was first activated when Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone paid a maiden official visit in July, with a military guard of honour welcoming him at Parliament House.

Mr Seah's team has been busy preparing for more upcoming events - one of which will involve Pope Francis  during his Singapore visit in September.

“The Pope will be received here. It actually is going to happen in a week where we have parliament sitting. So what I have done is to move the sitting, just shift a little bit, a day earlier, to accommodate this,” said Mr Seah.

“We want to make sure that it's a success, and we'll do our part.”

Riva , the iconic Ferretti Group brand, presented a new model at the historical Lake d’Iseo shipyards in July 2011. Featuring elegance and ease of transportation as its distinctive characteristics, Iseo superyacht tender , a 27 foot runabout, is destined to become a must-have for those who love cruising on both lakes and the sea, and, most importantly, design enthusiasts. It is also perfect for anyone wishing to enhance their yacht with an exclusive tender that will never go unnoticed.

Due to its ease of manoeuvrability and size, Iseo yacht tender is also ideal as a tender for large yachts. Innovative and elegant, it can also guarantee comfort in bad weather conditions. Besides the electrohydraulic bimini top, it was also designed with a waterproof, automobile-style soft top which protects those on board against water and the wind during cruising.
