Ron Whiteâs hilarious Dr. Phil story will have you smiling all day
The comedian shared a funny story about the time when he was invited on Dr. Philâs yacht. At the time, it was Ron Whiteâs first time on the annual vacation.
The joke he told on the yacht almost got him in trouble. According to Rare , his wife was furious with him and banished him to their hotel room because of it.
During one of Ron Whiteâs comedy sets, he shared a story about being on Dr. Philâs yacht. Dr. Phil had invited the comedian and some of his conservative friends from Dallas.
They were on their annual Mediterranean yacht vacation. While on the boat, White found a rare and expensive Scotch on board which he proceeded to drink.
The comedian drank the whole bottle by himself. Around the same time, his wife, the singer Margo Rey, had begun singing on deck.
Her unexpected concert caused several nearby yacht-owners to sail closer to Dr. Philâs yacht. White was then asked to do a set for the audience of wealthy boaters without them realizing he was drunk.
He gladly obliged but the comedian naturally doesnât have a filter. The alcohol just served to make matters worse for the star.
âYou just had to do the Eisenhower joke, didnât you?â
Margo Rey, Rare , August 9, 2017
Not thinking straight, White decided to tell a very crude sexual story about Mamie Eisenhower. The story was so bad that the audience was sent fleeing.
White was ordered back to the hotel by his wife. On his way, he slipped while getting off the boat and severely injured himself.

I was so in love with the idea of making people laugh for a living that I didn't care what I had to do to get there. Or how much money I was going to make when I did get there.
The biggest piece of advice that I give young comedians is: If it's your goal to get where I'm at, go do something else. Because you'll never get here. Never. The odds are so bad. Because not only do you have to be a really, really strong comedian but you also have to be lucky. And most people don't get that combination.
The bulk of my fans are my age, and I'm aging at the same rate they are. That makes me relevant. They like hearing what I have to say. I work hard at it, but it's addicting, really.

Comedian Ron âTater Saladâ White is a classic storyteller; relaying tales from his real life ranging from growing up in a small town in Texas, to sharing stories of his daily life, to becoming one of the most successful comedians in America. Ron rose to fame as the cigar-smoking, scotch-drinking funnyman from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour phenomenon, but since 2004 has established himself as a star in his own right. Over the past nine years he has been one of the top three grossing stand-up comedians on tour in America. During this time, all four of his comedy albums have charted #1 on the BillboardTM Comedy Charts. He is a three time Grammy-nominated comedian, and has sold over 10 million albums (Solo/Blue Collar Comedy Tour).
In 1986, Ron began performing comedy and was quickly opening for legendary comedians, such as Sam Kinison and Jeff Foxworthy. In 2000 as a comedy club headliner, Ron joined the Blue Collar Comedy Tour as a founding member alongside Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, and Larry the Cable Guy. Their show toured for over three years to sold-out audiences in over 270 cities and grossed more than $35 million. In 2003, Warner Brothers filmed the show, Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie for a theatrical/TV/DVD/CD release. When the film premiered on TV, it was the most-watched movie in Comedy Centralâs history.
Also in 2003, Ron released his breakthrough comedy CD Drunk In Public followed by his first one-hour TV comedy special They Call Me Tater Salad. The special had the highest viewership for a Sunday program in Comedy Central history. The DVD version was released in 2004. In 2005, Whiteâs second one-hour special You Canât Fix Stupid aired on Comedy Central to 4.5 million viewers, making it the third largest audience in Comedy Centralâs history and the #1 show on primetime basic cable. The CD reached #1 on the BillboardTM Comedy Charts and remained there for 9 consecutive weeks. This success also earned Ron his first Grammy nomination. In 2005, the second Blue Collar show Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again was filmed and released on TV and DVD/CD.
In 2006 Ron received his second Grammy nod for the third Blue Collar concert movie, Blue Collar Comedy Tour â One for The Road. Ron released his first book, Ron âTater Saladâ White: I Had the Right to Remain SilentâŚBut I Didnât Have the Ability, which landed him on the New York Times Best Seller List (Penguin Books). In 2009, his third album Behavioral Problems was released. In 2013 Ronâs fourth album, A Little Unprofessional, reached #1 on the BillboardTM Comedy Chart. All of Ronâs DVDs are certified Platinum.
Ron has been a passionate supporter of the US military troops for more than 20 years, donating time, capital, and resources. In 2008, he started his Comedy Benefit, Ron Whiteâs Comedy Salute to the Troops, with proceeds going to the Armed Forces Foundation to assist injured troops and their families. Many of Ronâs celebrity friends have participated in these shows: Rascal Flatts, Gabriel Iglesias, Lewis Black, Dave Attell, Kathleen Madigan, Ralphie May, Brian Regan, and more. In 2011, the show was recorded for TV/DVD and was one of the top three watched shows on CMT. The taping locations have been the historic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and The Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

Ron White's raunchy humor charms full house at Calvin Theatre in Northampton
- Published: Apr. 18, 2011, 4:24 a.m.
- Kevin O'Hare, The Republican
NORTHAMPTON â Ron "Tater Salad" White's performance at the Calvin Theatre had been listed on the venue's schedule many, many months ago and the comedian did not disappoint fans who'd been waiting all that time for him to take the stage of the Calvin Theatre Sunday.
The scotch-drinking, cigar smoking Texan is frequently associated with the likes of Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy, both of whom he's performed with, most notably on "The Blue Collar Comedy Tour." But White aims his Southern-styled humor toward a more sophisticated but undeniably raunchy style, a combination that's earned him Grammy nominations, millions in sales, top-rated TV specials and a book â ("I Had the Right to Remain SilentâŚBut I didn't Have the Ability") that landed on the New York Times' Best Seller list. Much of his sold-out, nearly 90-minute performance at the Calvin focused on a few of his favorite subjects, notably sex, marital relations and alcohol.
Playing the last night of a road stint that's brought him to 23 cities in 51 days, White was loose from the outset, sipping on scotch and smoking his trademark cigar. He told the audience that eight years ago he was totally broke, living in a friend's attic. It's been a long wild ride since then. Some of the first advice he gave to males in the crowd this night was to â whenever possible - trip up the Transportation Safety Administration, who provide the security screenings at airports. "Take two Viagra and demand a pat down," he said, drawing howls of laughter. "'What's that in your pants Mr. White?' Well, I have no idea."
He was particularly effective while discussing the relative merits of Tiger Woodsâ infamous marital infidelity. According to White, there were a lot of hypocrites shooting at Woods who would have done the same thing if they had the chance.
âIt all comes down to opportunity,â White said. âI see these big 350 pound guys saying âI never cheated on my wife.â I bet that was tough,â he said sarcastically to a roar from the throng.
Explaining that Woods probably had 82,000 opportunities to cheat over the years, White continued, saying âTiger was 18 for 82,000. You know what that is? Thatâs love.â
White seemed to push the limits of taste when he went on about the notable deaths of some non-celebrities, including the trainer who was killed by a whale at Sea World last year and a kid in Georgia who was killed in an amusement park incident. Itâs great to be on the edge with oneâs comedy and it is what makes a guy like White a success, but this just seemed like too much.
He was better when he returned to talking about his own life, reflecting on the changes that the worldâs gone through with time. His routine about how much easier it is for teens to access pornography now than it was when he was a kid was funny, scary and dead-on-target all at once, as was his comparison to how easy it is for kids to steal music over the Internet with a click of a button now.
âWhen I was a kid you had to go to Sears and cram a 12 by 12 inch album like Led Zeppelin II into your pants. Now thatâs stealing music.â
He riffed considerably about his third and current wife, jazz singer Margo Reymundo , and in very graphic fashion recalled the highs and lows of several of their sexual encounters, noting with hilarity how much she had learned from a friend named "Ted the Florist."
White closed with a raucous tale of his friendship with celebrity therapist Dr. Phil, and how outrageously drunk White had gotten aboard Dr. Philâs yacht during a vacation in Monaco last year, an event that was apparently attended by a far more conservative crowd than Whiteâs typical audience. He was so plowed he apparently told an especially ribald tale focusing on Mamie Eisenhower that pretty much got him kicked off the yacht. However, his undeniable charm helped him get invited to party with the folks the next night.
And that partly explains Whiteâs charismatic appeal. He makes crowds wince, hoot, howl, cover their eyes and roar. He may make people uncomfortable but somehow his frequently shocking brand of humor rarely takes away from his personal charm.

Everything We Know About the Luxury Yacht Sinking in Sicily, Killing 7 on Celebratory Trip
The key unanswered question remains â how did this happen?
What started out as a celebration on a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily ended in tragedy on Monday, Aug. 19, when the craft â the 183-foot-long Bayesian â is said to have sunk quickly into the waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea after what the Italian coast guard called a âviolent storm.â
Twenty-two people were aboard, including 12 passengers and 10 crew, authorities have said.
Fifteen people were soon rescued after the Bayesian sank. By Friday, Aug. 23, following complicated and protracted search and rescue efforts , the bodies of all seven victims had been found, sources told PEOPLE.
Among the dead were British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah.
Hereâs what to know about the tragedy, as Sicilian officials are expected to share more information this weekend.
What is the Bayesian yacht?
Built in 2008 by Perini Navi, with a much lauded interior designed by RĂŠmi Tessier and naval architecture by Ron Holland, the luxury vessel was refitted in 2020 and included six suites for as many as 12 passengers, plus quarters for 10 crew â the size of the traveling party this week when the yacht sank.Â
It has previously gone by the name Salute . But Bayesian appears to be a nod to Lynchâs career, referring to a kind of mathematical modeling used in his software company Autonomy.
Notably, the Bayesian has been touted as having the worldâs âlargest aluminum mastâ at some 246 feet.
Other features included specific design elements to âfavor alfresco entertainmentâ outdoors, such as a large covered saloon, as one charter company put it. And the interior was intended to âcreate familiar, pure, and natural atmospheres,â according to the charter description. Past photos show rooms bedecked in warmly lit neutrals and cream colors.

Where was the Bayesian yacht when the storm hit?
According to the Italian coast guard, the Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello in Sicily, on the northern tip of the island, when disaster struck on Aug. 19.
A source close to the survivors previously told PEOPLE that the passengers were celebrating after Lynch, labeled in headlines as Britain's "Bill Gates," was acquitted in June in a financial fraud trial in the U.S. that was related to selling his software company Autonomy for $11 billion to Hewlett Packard in 2011.
âThat's why he took his closest friends and colleagues on the trip,â the source said.
Lynch himself reflected on how his life had changed after coming out of the shadow of his legal troubles. He told The Sunday Times in the U.K. in late July that he felt like he'd been given a "second life."
But "the question is," he said then, "what do you want to do with it?â
Who was on the yacht before it sank?
The 12 passengers included Lynch, his daughter Hannah and his wife, Angela Bacares; Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and his wife , Judy Bloomer; New York City-based lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo; Charlotte Golunski , her partner, James, and daughter Sophie and Ayla Ronald , a colleague at Christopher Morvilloâs law firm.
The BBC reports that Ronald was also with her partner.
The 10 crew members included cook Recaldo Thomas , who was among the seven victims who died, as well as the captain, reportedly named James Cutfield, and others. According to The New York Times , one of the deck stewards was a 19-year-old South African native on his first such voyage.

Who was rescued from the yacht?
Bacares, Ronald and her partner, Golunski and her family and nine of the crew members survived the sinking. The coast guard has said that some of them were âinitially rescued by a boat in the immediate vicinity.â
Karsten Borner was the captain of the nearby boat and said he saw the yacht sink quickly.
"It all happened in really little time," he told Italian news outlet Rai, according to the BBC.
âThe storm was over. We noticed that the ship behind us was gone,â Borner told the BBC. âAnd then we saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position and we found this life raft drifting [with] 15 people inside."

Who died in the sinking?
Italian authorities have not yet publicly named all seven victims, though a government official told Reuters that Lynch was among the dead and the chefâs body was also identified to PEOPLE and other outlets by local sources involved in the investigation.Â
Five other passengers were initially described as missing, and five more bodies have since been found in the wreck, sources said: Lynchâs daughter Hannah; Jonathan and Judy Bloomer and Christopher and Neda Morvillo.

FAMILY HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/ShutterstockÂ
Why did the Bayesian sink?
This has emerged as perhaps the key question in the tragedy , and the answer remains unclear.
One theory is that the boat capsized after being struck by a waterspout (which refers to a tornado over the water), though there may have been more factors at play that contributed to the sinking.Â
"The dynamics aren't clear â lightning, mini tornado, water spout, it's not clear exactly what happened," one person close to the search efforts tells PEOPLE. "The most likely hypothesis is that the cause was indeed a tornado that began at land and then sped out off coast and became a waterspout at sea with a speed of more than [180 miles] per hour, to the point that it managed to practically sink the ship whilst causing minimum damage to both the mast and the hull."
"Eyewitnesses said the boat went down in minutes," this person adds.
The source says the vesselâs upper hatches could have been open at the time of the disaster, which would have caused the boat to quickly fill up with water. The source also says that large amounts of water may have flowed onto the ship through the hatches as the vessel rocked back and forth during the storm.
âThis would be the only thing that could cause the hull to rear up which, as several survivors told the investigators, made the ship sink in literally 60 secondsââââââââââââââ,â the source says.
Patrick McMullan/Patrick McMullan via GettyÂ
Another factor that could have caused the yacht to lose stability was its movable keel, which is an underwater blade designed to help keep boats upright and prevent them from swaying back and forth, the source close to the investigation tells PEOPLE.
They say that the 30-foot keel was allegedly retracted to about 13 feet when the storm hit, while natural experts say it would have been strange to retract the keel at that location if the crew knew bad weather was approaching.
The boatâs 236-foot mast may also have played a role in allowing the boat to rock, similar to a pendulum.
"This episode sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," Giovanni Costantino â who leads The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the Bayesian in 2008 â said, according to CNN .
Speaking with PEOPLE, Costantino was more circumspect.
âI obviously can't say for certain [what happened],â he says, âbut what I'm sure of is that the only reason a sailboat, especially one with Perini Navi technologies installed, could sink is if it fills with water."

Ron white keeps the audience in stitches at the majestic theatre this weekend..
by Amy Martin published Monday, March 26, 2012
At the conclusion of his final of four sold-out shows at the Majestic Theatre, Ron White responded to the thunderous applause with “there is no better crowd anywhere, I love playing here.” You could tell it was good to be home. Now 26 years after plying his trade to a few hundred people at the Arlington Funny Bone, he had all 1,500-plus people begging for mercy at the end of his set: If they laughed anymore they’d die.
With Ron White, you laugh at things you shouldn’t laugh at. A long tirade about golfer Tiger Woods was sympathetic at first, but ended by noting that Woods could no more change his way than a chicken-killing dogâan exceedingly Southern metaphor. Fans loved the routine about how working out to lose weight “hurt my fat” and how a medical marijuana prescription cured the symptoms of being out of marijuana.
But it’s a slightly softer Ron White act these days, though the Scotch and cigar are ever present. His marriage to vocalist Margo Rey threads through his show, vignettes of their life on the road together and attempts by Margo, who has a deep spiritual core, to engage the equally agnostic White in yoga, meditation and vegetarian dining options. Even the white French bulldogs, Pearl and Gertie, with whom he courted Margo, made an adorable appearance on stage.
Yet underneath this soft approachability is a master in control of his room. In our interview a few days earlier , White mentioned that he was a “pace, rhythm and timing comic” whose craft was “working out the beats.” Few things bother him more than being interrupted on stage, which throws his rhythm off. Early in his set he delivered a routine about a loud babbler at a Las Vegas show whom he took to task by saying that talking during a show “is like sh—ing in the street.” When she still didn’t shut up, he spun a fantasy about taking her out to the desert and ending the babble for good. Afterward, anytime a heckler popped off in the Dallas audience, White cautioned “Don’t sh– in the street.” Turns out when you’ve just killed off a prior heckler in a routine, folks can get cooperative mighty quick.
A storyteller to the core, White ended his show with the hysterically told “Dr. Phil story” about being invited to join the doctor and some of his conservative friends from Dallas on the celebrity’s annual Mediterranean yacht vacation. Once White discovered a rare, expensive Scotch on board he proceeded to drinkâa lot. After a fantastic impromptu concert on the deck by Margo that drew hundreds of fellow nearby yachters to hear, the very drunken White was asked to do a set. He pulled out a very unprintable sexual story about Mamie Eisenhower, of all people, that sent the beautiful people fleeing.
Ordered back to the hotel by Margo, an 18-inch step off the yacht was missed and White was sent into a drunken, shoulder-dislocating, arm-lacerating sprawl. As he related musing the next day on how he must change his waysâ”You just had to do the Eisenhower joke, didn’t you?” kvetched Margoâfans wondered if we were seeing the end of his reprobate days. Then the good doctor called, wondering when White and Margo were coming over to party.
Yep, once again, White got away with it, which is why we love him.

Grady-White Pulls off Its Largest Raft-up Ever in Vieques, Puerto Rico
- By Tonya Russell
- August 26, 2024
Que tu sabe!
It is a common greeting in Latin America. (Literal translation: âWhat do you know?â) Despite the DJâs music carrying across the sand, I was able to hear people around me greeting each other in that way. They acknowledged me like that too. After all, though I wasnât visiting on a boat, the 3rd annual Grady-White Rendezvous engaged everyone enjoying Sun Bay.
What started as a way for a group with a commonality to come together has turned into a day that residents prepare and take off for. Event organizer Victor Camillo describes the vibe of the Rendezvous:
âBeing together with others with the same interests is amazing. We love being able to create memories. Weâre like a family.â
Camillo says that Puerto Ricoâs Grady-White  community has managed to create a positive atmosphere for boaters, their families, and Vieques locals. The jovial, drama-free event can make anyone feel like they can host, or be part of, an epic raft-up, but a lot of planning has gone into making the weekend successful year after year.
Whatâs a raft-up, you say? Itâs a gathering of boaters who meet, and tie their vessels together, creating an anchored raft. This usually occurs in a pretty spot, like a cove or sandbar, though this Vieques locale is over-the-top special. Raft-up activities include visiting the other boats, swimming, wading ashore to beachcomb, and perhaps taking a kayak or SUP for a paddle. In short, a raft-up is a celebration of the boating lifestyle. This Grady-White raft-up is of record-setting size, with 77 boats and over 300 loyal Grady owners attending. That makes its organizers a great source for advice if you are seeking to organize a raft-up in your area.
According to Bill Burleson, the eventâs cofounder, at least six-monthâs worth of planning is necessary for the first large-scale raft-up. That will give you time to figure out the where and why of your event, because it is not enough to just tie up and party. He explains that every event should keep in mind three main tenets: charitable giving, a positive local impact, and a family friendly atmosphere.
Have a Cause in Mind
Six months before the event, the Grady owners group, La Familia Grady-White Puerto Rico, was already collecting dues. Collecting money early confirms a guestâs commitment, but it also helps with planning the charitable contribution. On top of donations to organizations like Susan G. Komen, Vieques groups receive support, like the local hospital that received a mammography machine. âThe purpose is to create a better environment while getting to know other great boat owners,â Burleson explains.
This year, La Familia Grady-White Puerto Rico donated $8,000 to Fe Que Transforma (Faith that Transforms), a group that prepares food for those in need. It also reportedly generated some $100,000 for the local economy, which is in some need.
Respect the Locals
Burleson, a Vieques native who now lives on the mainland, feels that an event is not effective if it doesnât positively engage the local community.
âI asked the group, âWhy donât we get together and raise funds for some entity in Vieques?â So I called the mayor, and he immediately directed me to an entity that provides transportation to cancer patients.â
Events in small rural areas, like Vieques, are only impactful if the residents can somehow reap the benefits, and if needs go beyond cancer care, Burleson is proud of how much money the locals make.
âWeâve been stimulating the economy, and within three years, weâve injected approximately a quarter of a million dollars into Vieques.â
That isnât just hotel and Airbnb revenue, considering most stay on their boats. The beach is lined with food trucks and stands, vendors grilling lobster, selling slushies and arepas.
In the process of planning and partying, locals should not feel out of place or sidestepped because of an event encroaching upon the best beach or bay. That includes the ones that canât speak up for themselves. About a quarter of a mile from the site of the party, you can find taped off, secluded areas of beach. Vieques goes to great lengths to ensure that newly hatched sea turtles are undisturbed and able to make it to the surf.
One of the highlights of the weekend is when all of the boats turn on their underwater lights. While itâs magical to witness, it is short lived, according to Burleson. By 10:30 p.m., all of the lights are off so that sea turtles are able to find their way to the shore to nest.
âWe also enforce that no one can approach the yellow ribbons where the turtles nest,â he says.
Even in an area without endangered wildlife, leaving no trace should be a goal, and thatâs why Grady-Whiteâs Rendezvous ends with a beach cleanup by all.
Luis Rivera has been attending the raft-up since the beginning. A doctor from the main island, he was excited to hear about the mammography machine that will aid the locals, considering the alarmingly high rates of cancer on the island, compared to the mainland. He was called by the mission, but what keeps him coming back is the overall atmosphere. He contributed to it, after all, seeing that I decided to talk to him after devouring the crab salad he came and offered me.
âWhat keeps me coming back is that the people are respectful, and we donate to help poorer people in the community. My family enjoys it very much.â
The music was a good mix of Top 40 and local sounds. Clean lyrics of course. On Friday, the crowd is light, but Saturday, the surf is comfortably crowded with children on paddleboards and kayaks, snorkeling, and flipping into the water. Riveraâs brood of six jumped in line to snack on pernil and arroz con gandules when they werenât floating along or dancing to the sounds of the live band. At 70, Rivera wasnât the oldest participant, and even tiny babies were held in waist-deep water sporting their floats.
Day of Strategies
On the first day of the Rendezvous, I noticed Camillo running around with a hand-held VHF radio. No water-based event can work without them, and certainly not without dinghies (how do you think I got to Burlesonâs beautiful boat with my recorderâswimming?) Future raft-up organizers take note.
The event has never run into a significant problem, and that is probably because they keep safety at the forefront. This is another important consideration for those planning a raft-up.
According to Burleson, âWe donât allow people to walk from boat to boat. If you want to see a friend down the way, you take a dinghy or paddleboard, or you swim.â At the minimum, breaking an ankle would dampen the vibe, but boating accidents can be deadly, even when everyone is sober.
Safety is also why this yearâs line-up was also broken up, with some boats anchored together separately, off to the side. While it may not be as aesthetically pleasing, it is safer than forcing boats out into a rougher part of the bay. Besides, locals also need access, and a big chain of boats can block them.
Again, work with the community in which you are planning your raft up.
Besides, how else would the local fisherman come to the shore with their freshly caught lobster?
Common courtesy is enforced, and each participant gets a list of rules.
Burleson says, âWe give everyone a list of requirements, including regarding your holding tanks. Youâre not going to flush them here.â
That list includes how to interact with the turtles, informing everyone of the legality.
Familiarize Yourself With Rafting Up
For an event like the Rendezvous, boaters received plenty of help, but it was beneficial for all of the boats to know how to raft up prior to the event. Dinghies also directed oncoming boats to exactly where theyâd tie up. Consider stationing people in dinghies to direct and help people at your raft-up.
If youâre new to tying up, start by having three fenders and two mooring lines per side, and tie the fenders up higher than usual to prevent any impact. It is also good to have two to four spring lines on hand. The larger boat will serve as the âanchor,â and other boats should be facing the same way when approaching.
Camillo warns that you could injure yourself or others if someone is in the water, or if you arenât watching your hands closely. Make sure all passengers keep their hands and feet in the boat while rafting up, so they donât get pinched.
Bottom Line
The Grady-White Owners of Puerto Rico, put on one of the most successful and largest raft-ups in the world. It is a testament to good planning, the fellowship between boaters and to top it off, it helps those in need. To the Grady-White Family of Puerto Rico, we say, ÂĄBuen trabajo!
9 Tips for Rafting Up
- The largest, heaviest boat should drop its anchor first, and smaller boats can tie up on either side.
- Approaching boats should slow down to avoid any potentially damaging collisions. Think twice about cutting your engineâyou may need to guide your boat against the current.
- Remember to deploy your fenders before approaching another boat to raft up.
- Come in facing the same direction as the larger boat, then throw your bow line over to the larger boat.
- Try to align the boatsâ transoms. Exchange lines, and make sure theyâre firm before tying up.
- Tie the bowline first, then the stern line.
- Always secure boats to one another using the cleatsânot rail stations, handrails, or other accessories.
- Keep the lines tied between boats as tight as possible to minimize motion between the boats.
- Try your best to raft together with boats that are a similar size next to each other, or in size order.

Ron White made the F-31 trimaran Cheekee Monkee pretty famous over the past few years. Â We dug Ron’s extensive modification program (including canting rig and big lifting foils) and his great success with the boat (including his overall Mackinac Shore Course record broken this year by Il Mostro). Â But of course most people remember Ron for his penchant for flipping the boat over; once quite famously on the Mack, once at the start of the Lauderdale to Key West Race, and then there are the ones that went unreported…
Last year Marine City, Michigan’s Rick Warner scooped up the Monkee, and he filed this report on his first Bayview Mac as owner of the re-named Cheeky, which sailed against just 3 other multihulls on the Cove Island course.
We won the start in moderate air, and watched the incredible Gougeon boats and their experienced crews slowly climb over our F-31. Â It wasn’t long before a roll cloud began to form on the horizon. Â Ron White, our navigator and a guy who knows this lake and this boat as well as anyone, gave his analysis; take the lifted board to Canada under this big cloud and bank on the eventual lift at Cove Island.
With 30 knots of apparent over the deck and Cheeky lifting on her foils and turning serious speed we pushed aggressively into the rapidly building chop and breeze. Â It was almost like the wind knew when our shift change was up; Mike McGarry and I came on shift just as the wind began a quick build, and after throwing in a second tuck in the main, we locked in for a FANTASTIC 3-hour amusement park ride – one of the best of my life.
As Mike was reefing and I was keeping Cheeky slapping across the face of the water like she really likes, we rolled over some monohull; It might as well have been a big yellow dump truck for all we could see; at that speed, everything is just a watery blur. Â Mike Fahle and Ron drove through another shift of fast, aggressive close-reaching, and when the son came up the next morning, we had a simple plan; stay on the Michigan side, work the rhumb line, and keep hauling the mail. Â The next thing we knew, we’d bagged an incredible 9:30 PM finish.
I can’t say enough about them; sure, anyone who has competed against Ron, Mike, and Mike knows how good they are and how much fun they are to sail with, but what blew me (and our competition) away was just how confidently and skillfully they pushed the boat through some heavy conditions, making her modifications really shine.

Ron joined Grand Pointe Marina as a salesperson in 2009. He’s been working in sales for nearly 40 years and, when the opportunity to sell boats here came up, he “…jumped at it!” as he puts it; “What’s a better job, and a better experience, than selling boats?” Ron loves matching our customers with the perfect boat for their wants and needs. “Whether it’s a fishing boat, a pontoon, an open bow, a cuddy cabin or a cabin cruiser, I’ll make sure they get the right boat,” he says.Like many of the crew at Grand Pointe, Ron has been a devoted boater from much of his life. Growing up on a small inland lake in Livingston County, his family always had a boat. “It was mainly fishing, always fun,” he says. Now a resident of Howell, Ron still enjoys fishing, much of the time with his family. On a trip last year with two of his four grandchildren, his granddaughters wondered why the boat was filling with water. “I pull the plug to drain my boat when loading it onto the trailer 100% of the time and 50% of the time, I forget to put it back in!” he explains. Ron immediately knew what the problem was, so no harm; just a little embarrassment. This past March Ron, his father, and his brother and nephew took a fishing trip on the “St. Joe” river which he describes as “A great family trip!”
