Review of Seawolf 26

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 76.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Seawolf 26 is equipped with a bilge keel. A bilge keel is a double keel, which allows the boat to be beached. Bilge keels are the most popular keel for tidal waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.91 - 1.01 meter (2.99 - 3.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Seawolf 26 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta 2001 diesel engine at 7 hp (5 kW). Calculated max speed is about 3.9 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 38.0 liters (10 US gallons, 8 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Seawolf 26 is 2.19, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Seawolf 26 is about 121 kg/cm, alternatively 680 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 121 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 680 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 16.68

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 18m 2 (193 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Broker's Comments

A really good, fast sailing boat, well equipped with an excellent engine with low hours, would suit a couple, family or a single hander possibly. The boat is due her annual lift out and would benefit from a good clean all round, the owner has a newer sail cover and spray hood, which he intends to put on after the winter period.

As a confirmed mobo , I tread lightly here , but I have the chance of getting my hands on an old seawolf 26 , and was wonderring if this is a boat that is worth getting hold of . Anyone know of the type , and is she likely to be any good to a mobo trying out the other side . She looks alright , but as I've never sailed I'm not sure if there are things to avoid Thanks all Dave

Have a look at Cobra Seawolf Owners Assoc They are a very strong boat, good accomodation for size good bilge keel versions, fast with high aspect rig but very lively. Many fit-outs some home finished with varied engine installations.

I'm going to betray my ignorance now , what's a 'high aspect rig' , haven't got one on my mobo

ColinHuggins

Seadog is spot on. I sailed a Seawolf 30 for years and they are a good design, although David Feltham was a better designer than builder. But as a someone with feet in both camps, I do advise learning to sail a dinghy a.s.a.p. You can move on to a floating home with booze, bog and bird when you've mastered he strings 'n things. Best of luck!

I have a friend nearby that has been nagging at me to get in his dinghy for some lessons , so I'll be doing that , but what's this 'high aspect rig' thing

It's a big tall rig and sails for the size of boat, high aspect ratio means the sails are very tall for the width which in the case of the Seawolves is only partly true. More true is to say that they are big. This means you have to reef earlier or sail more actively in terms of sheeting in and out all the time luffing up and spiliing wing falttening sails etc etc. On the plus side you can keep sailing for longer when the wind drops. On the plus side it's more fun

That explains that bit , but I think I'd better start taking lessons to understand the rest . I take it , she'll be a bit much for a novice then ? .

Jumping in. No. Just do it! In fact a dinghy is a pain IMHO. No beer storage, wet backside and skitty, prone to capsize. Boat is like a Mobo till you put the rag things onto the stick assembly. Height of all anxiousness is take off and landing, and you already know that bit. Cajole someone (me for instance) to take you out on an EAst Coast river of your choice for a day, and off you go. I/Anyone can teach you to sail in 20 minutes, which will take you a lifetime to learn. Remember you need a bit more deeps, and it takes more time to arrive, and you must learn to look at the world at 20 degrees to the vertical.

Now that I understood , that's how I did it with the mobo . But can't you just sail with the boat still vertical , 20 degrees sounds a bit scary .

Aha! first rule of cruising as opposed to sailing. If you sail dead downwind, it doesnt heel at all (well it can, but thats another story). The added benefit being that the wind feels a lot gentler, and you are going quickly. On the East Coast this is not a problem as the prevailing winds in and out of the rivers is either dead downwind or dead upwind, which means you get it one way or the other, see? Lesson 2 will be why 'Gentlemen dont beat'. It means dont sail upwind and you wont get as wet. Thats what the well found rotating diesel thing is for. S'easy this. Next?

aaaahh , so if I wait till the winds in the right direction before casting off , I don't need to lean , and if the wind changes direction I revert to mobo mode . Sounds simple when put like that . But what I really wanted was opinions on the boat , and me being a novice sailor with that boat .

Any boat is lovely to its owner. Cant help more than that with this one, havent heard bad things, nor especially nice things. Its all in the eye of the beholder........

Oh she's a nice looking boat , and with those two things sticking out underneath her , she should sit nicely on the mud at low tide

Oh well , I take it the mobo looking at a small yacht idea doesn't appeal to many . I'll try elsewhere thanks .

Shame your not getting alot of help here Dave . Maybe its because your a mobo ? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hopefully not /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, after all , I'm semi converting

Oi, you pair! I have offered to assist in the conversion, and you only need one. After all, I started in Mobos when I was 2 years old.......

Would love to offer kind words about the Seawolf (wasn't he a u-boat commander?) but I think not many of them can have made it around the corner and into the English Channel, coz I've never knowingly beheld one. P'raps best not to sail one on the night of a full moon?

The US Navy's Submarine Fleet Is Bigger Than You Think

Submarine operating submerged

Thanks to movies like "Crimson Tide," when most people think of the United States Navy's submarine force, they remember the Ohio-class submarines. While Ohio-class subs make up a portion of the submarine force, they're hardly the most used subs in the service. There are currently four classes of submarines in the Navy, and they vary in function, from fast attack to various types of missile submarines.

The U.S. Navy's submarine force currently consists of 71 submarines. These days, all of the United States' submarines are nuclear-powered, having stopped using diesel-powered subs with the retirement of the USS Dolphin (AGSS-555) in 2007. This makes it possible for a sub to operate for as long as needed, and they only need to return to port to add provisions or transfer personnel, and means that a U.S. submarine can stay submerged for months at a time.

In terms of missions, the various submarines that make up the fleet undertake a variety of operations. Some remain hidden beneath the waves to be used in the event of nuclear war, while others patrol the world's oceans, looking for potential targets while ideally remaining undetected. The 71 submarines in the fleet are operated by thousands of submariners, and every one of them serves a vital function in the U.S. military's global operations. These are the boats upon which they serve.

Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines

Los Angeles-class submarine docked

The U.S. Navy's fleet of Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines (SSN) has been the backbone of the submarine fleet for decades. The now decommissioned USS Los Angeles (SSN-688), the first of its kind, was commissioned in 1976, and over the life of the program, the Navy operated 62, though only 25 remain in service. They make up more than half of the fast attack submarine fleet, and each one is named after an American city.

Los Angeles-class submarines are powered by a nuclear reactor that propels the vessel to a maximum speed of 25 knots (29 mph). They require refueling after around 10 years and are manned by 16 officers and 127 enlisted personnel. In terms of armaments, each sub features four 21-inch torpedo tubes, Tomahawk land attack missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and a complement of deep-water anti-submarine mines. Like other Navy vessels, Los Angeles-class subs have undergone massive refits and redesigns for modernization.

Upgraded models feature 12 vertical launching system tubes to fire Tomahawk missiles at targets up to 1,500 miles, so the subs are deadly on both land and sea. Los Angeles-class submarines were built for one purpose: to counter the threat posed by the Soviet Union. While the threat never fully manifested, Los Angeles-class submarines have taken part in U.S. military operations around the globe. Due to their age, the Navy is actively replacing its aged fleet of Los Angeles-class subs with newer Virginia-class submarines.

Ohio-class ballistic missile and guided missile submarines

Ohio-class submarine underway on surface

The Ohio-class submarine is one of the most important in the fleet, as it's responsible for delivering nuclear missiles to targets anywhere in the world. Hopefully, that will never happen, but having Ohio-class submarines as part of the Nuclear Triad and a deterrent to outside aggression makes them the best unused weapons in the U.S. arsenal . The Navy initially planned for 24 vessels but stopped with 18, all of which remain in service.

Of the 18 Ohio-class submarines, 14 carry 24 Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). Each missile is capable of carrying up to eight nuclear warheads of varying yields with a range of up to 7,100 miles, though various sources note different ranges. The USS Ohio (SSGN-726) was the first to be commissioned in November 1981, and it remains active to this day. There are two types of Ohio-class submarines based on their configuration. There are 14 guided-missile submarines (SSBN) that carry nuclear weapons, and four ballistic missile submarines (SSGN).

The Navy's fleet of SSGNs is configured to carry cruise missiles instead of ICBMs. Each sub carries 154 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles, and 22 are loaded into the sub's launch tubes for immediate use whenever necessary. Technically, SSGNs are still capable of carrying and firing ICBMs, but they aren't utilized for that purpose. Instead, they function as land-attack platforms with an extensive stand-off distance, making them lethal while remaining safe at sea.

Seawolf-class fast attack submarines

Seawolf-class submarine docking

The Seawolf-class submarine fleet is the smallest in the Navy's inventory, with only three boats having been built. Initially, 29 were ordered, but the Navy canceled the program due to the end of the Cold War. All three remain active fast attack submarines (SSN) operating in the world's oceans today. The USS Seawolf (SSN-21) was commissioned in July 1997 and was assigned to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

Seawolf-class submarines are fast, achieving a maximum speed of 35 knots (40 mph), so they're not called "fast attack submarines" for nothing. Each sub is outfitted with a nuclear reactor, and they're manned by 14 officers and 126 enlisted personnel. Seawolf-class subs may not have gone into mass production, but they changed submarine warfare via their speed and stealth. In terms of armaments, each sub features eight 26" torpedo tubes, Tomahawk land attack missiles, anti-ship missiles, and guided torpedoes.

One of the three Seawolf-class submarines, the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23), is unlike the others. The Carter is around 100 feet longer than its sister boats, allowing for the insertion of the Multi-Mission Platform. This enables the sub to launch remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROV) operated by Navy SEALs on clandestine missions. The modification cost $887 million and likely made it possible for the Carter to tap undersea fiber optic cables, making it the only vessel capable of doing so.

Virginia-class fast attack submarines

USS Virginia underway on surface

The Virginia-class fast attack submarine is the newest model in the Navy's undersea fleet. Virginia-class boats were designed to be smaller and faster than their predecessors, which they're actively replacing in the inventory. As of mid-2024, 22 Virginia-class submarines have entered into active service. The Navy has more on the way, with ten under construction and an additional four on order. Once they enter service, Virginia-class submarines will make up the bulk of the Navy's submarine fleet.

The USS Virginia (SSN-774) was commissioned in October 2004, and the Virginia class became the most technologically advanced ever constructed . Virginia-class subs move through the water at over 25 knots (28.7 mph), powered by its nuclear reactor. The boat's complement consists of 15 officers and 120 enlisted personnel. There are five blocks with varying armaments, with the newest, Block V, featuring 12 tubes for Tomahawk cruise missiles and four 21" torpedo tubes, planned for future boats.

In total, a Virginia-class submarine can carry between 25 and 65 torpedoes and missiles, each of which makes the vessel incredibly lethal in undersea warfare. Virginia-class submarines' nuclear reactors output a ton of energy (30 megawatts), and future plans may incorporate the addition of a high-energy laser weapon on the periscope mast capable of emitting a beam powered to 300-500 kilowatts. Should this be incorporated, the laser will likely function as a defense against aircraft, though it's unclear when — or if — this will happen.
