Love the views from the Shoreby Club! One of my friends from the Board we serve on is a member here and has graciously coordinated for our group to have Board Meeting in the gazebo or a room in the main club area. Also have attended Harbor Fest and it was a great time.

Beautiful venue for a wedding that I recently attended. The staff were so helpful and great! Overall, amazing views and food!

Came here for a wedding. Was absolutely stunning. The staff was pretty friendly as well, and the views are spectacular!!

shoreby yacht club bratenahl ohio

I've been here three different times now: once for a private party, once for an event and once to just hang out by the pool. Shoreby has a great location for any of the above and on a clear night, the sunset is pretty damn spectacular. The food is pretty good too and you can't complain about poolside drinks, either. Also, they've just constructed a poolside cabana so those poolside drinks will be even easier to come by.

Photo of Ash K.

This year the place has gone significantly down hill. Three of the four dinners that we tried to eat there so far this year were completely uncooked and uneatable, plus the service was terrible. Worse is the new staff's attitude. It used to be a nice place, but something changed and it is not what it was.

Cool Spaces: The Shoreby Club in Bratenahl exudes historic, timeless elegance

Most of the mansions built during the 19th Century by Cleveland’s industrial giants are long gone. An exception is Samuel Mather’s 25-room lakefront summer home in Bratenahl. (Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer)

The Mathers nicknamed their getaway “Shoreby,” or “by the shore.” This is the home's lake-facing circular dining room.

Mather’s more famous 42-room residence, on the “Millionaire’s Row” stretch along Euclid Avenue, also one of the few still standing, was built in 1910. It's now owned by Cleveland State University.

Mather died of heart problems in his lakefront mansion in 1931. Flora died previously, in 1909, and so never lived in the Millionaire’s Row residence.

Built in 1890, the three-level mansion, about 10 minutes east of downtown, is clad in handcrafted stone. (Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer)

Twenty-five years ago, after having had several owners and even vacant for a time, the mansion was restored and renamed the Shoreby Club. These days the private club is enjoyed by about 500 members and their family and friends with formal and casual dining, workspaces for meetings, rooms for weddings and other special occasions, swimming, the nearby 100-plus slip Newport Harbor (to the right) for members who own boats, and more.

The mansion offers members a peek at Cleveland's prestigious architectural past. (Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer)

Reason being: The original wood, ornate fireplaces and leaded glass windows look much as it all did when Mather and his wife, Flora Stone Mather, and the couple’s four children summered here, as if frozen in time.

“Great big old houses in those days were divided into a lot of rooms, and some of those rooms were opened up during the restoration,” said Shoreby Club Private Events Director Jane Clarke. “But, for the most part, the layout, or floorplan, of the home still looks as it did when it was built.”

This is one of the many window seats that fill all three levels of the home.

The sprawling summer getaway was designed by Charles F. Schweinfurth - as was the Mather Mansion on Euclid Boulevard – the most expensive and largest on the boulevard at the time. In all, Schweinfurth crafted about 15 homes on Millionaire’s Row for Cleveland’s most prominent families, including John D. Rockefeller, along with the Rockefeller Park bridges, churches, educational buildings and more.

“Schweinfurth’s uncompromising attention to detail and ability to meet his clients’ exacting requirements quickly launched his prolific career as the leading residential architect for Cleveland’s prominent families,” Anthony W. Hiti wrote in the book, “Charles F. Schweinfurth – Uncompromising Architect of Cleveland’s Valiant Age.” Hiti continued, “Schweinfurth’s work was distinguished by its impeccable craftsmanship, ornately carved woodwork and lavishly sculpted stone details.”

The mansion has two patios with arched stone entrances. Both originally were open-air but were later enclosed. (Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer)

This is the front-facing patio. The other faces the lake. Mather, who co-founded Pickands, Mather and Company shipping and iron mining company and was founding director of U.S Steel, and for years was the city’s richest citizen, is reputed to have stared at the lake – perhaps from of his rear stone patio - through binoculars spotting his ships coming to the ports of the city.

The Mathers were known for their generosity that greatly benefited the medical and other communities. Flora, whose father was Amasa Stone, a wealthy banker and builder of bridges, was key in promoting the education of women in this area; hence, the namesake Flora Stone Mather Center for Women at Case Western University. It isn’t known if she entertained at the couple’s summer getaway, but, visiting here, it’s easy to imagine her hosting elegantly dressed women who shared her cause.

John Domo restored the Mather summer mansion. (Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer)

In doing so, Domo is credited with bringing Bratenahl back to life, so to speak. Twenty five years ago, Bratenahl hadn’t seen any new development in 18 years, according to a Findlay Publishing Co. article that ran in 2004. Domo acquired seven estates, including the Howard Hanna and the Sam Mather estates. Along with restoring the Mather summer home, he engineered nearby developments including gated English country homes and townhouses and Newport Harbor.

Although the mansion was, for the most part, kept-as is during the restoration, the bright, airy Harbor Grille was added to the building. (Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer)

The casual dining space has an eye-level view of the lake and Newport Harbor, and opens to the pool and the cabana bar.

The Shoreby Club is swept in burgundy, hunger green and gold, the traditional country club palette.

For weddings and other celebrations and special occasions, the club is fabulous, said Shoreby Club Private Events Director Jane Clarke. But there’s one caveat: You must be sponsored by a member. √

After over four years of planning, John Domo’s Newport North Shore Development exercised its option to acquire Samuel Mather's Shoreby at 12023 Lake Shore Boulevard on January 2, 1990. Mather had the home designed for summer fun, and Domo conceived of retaining that summer fun with a resort atmosphere featuring a full-service dining club with a lakeside swimming pool. The acquisition of Shoreby provided him with the mansion for a clubhouse and Shaw Brook for a marina site.

The focal point of the Newport development was the equity member Shoreby Club. The club would feature a formal dining room and lounge on the first floor, a garden terrace overlooking Lake Erie, several private dining rooms on the second floor, and six to eight elegant guest suites on the third floor. In addition, the plan included a new building to accommodate a fully equipped spa/wellness center with features such as an indoor lap pool, a whirlpool, steam baths, and fitness equipment.

The plan for Shoreby also provided a wide variety of recreational amenities like sailing and fishing-charter services, outdoor and indoor lap pools, and tennis and paddle tennis courts.

Bradford Gellert, senior project manager for ThenDesign Architecture, was selected as the architect for the mansion renovation and addition of the Harbor Grill. Peggy A. Brown of Cleveland Heights was chosen as the landscape architect.

Groundbreaking was on May 22, 1992. The general contractor for the seven-million dollar project was Richard R. Maher, the Maher Group, Inc. of Mayfield Heights.

The twenty-five-room Romanesque home was restored to its former grandeur and preserved as much as possible to retain the splendor of the past. The exterior had a chemical stone cleaning. Existing windows were refitted with thermopane glass. Six layers of roof material were removed, and a slate roof with copper gutters was installed.

Adjoining the mansion, the Harbor Grill and Bar was added, featuring casual year-round, indoor dining and poolside service surrounding the Olympic-sized heated swimming pool during the warmer months.

Two phases were to be developed when there was sufficient equity ownership. Phase II of the renovation was to provide five guest suites on the third floor, tennis court at the south end of Newport Harbor, and restoration of the “pocket” beach and twin piers. Phase III was to provide a spa-wellness center adjacent and connected to the Harbor Grill.

The facility’s interior was modernized with new heating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems installed. The original millwork and fireplaces were kept, but the floor plan changed somewhat to make it a cheerful and inviting club.

The Dallas-based ClubCorp, the largest owner and operator of private golf and country clubs in the United States, helped oversee the renovation of the Samuel Mather mansion. They retained the noted architect/interior designers, Harold Young from Dallas, Texas, for the interior design work and local engineers and architects. Young promised to remain faithful to the original intent of the Mathers.

Many of the closets and bathrooms were removed on the second floor to allow for meeting rooms. The Lakeview Dining Room retained the original Minton tiles surrounding the fireplace with the religious inscription favored by Mr. Mather.

Designers used drapery and rug colors of muted greens, blues, and reds to go with the paneled woodwork and elegant fireplaces of the club.

The result was the creation of a unique and glamourous ambiance. Shoreby became reminiscent of the fabled clubs of the 19th century, reflecting an era both in international flavor and through the selection of furnishings and artwork. Shoreby bestowed a vacation resort atmosphere providing impressive lake views along with unrivaled sunsets.

In the fall of 1989, a board was assembled for the Shoreby Club. They selected Shoreby Club Management Inc., an Ohio Corporation owned by Club Corporation of America, to manage Shoreby.

The Shoreby Club offered pre-registration tours on weekend afternoons during 1990. Village residents were welcome, with no appointments necessary. The club had been the site of informal summer gatherings during the summer of 1990 as the membership grew.

On a beautiful Saturday evening on May 8, 1993, Bratenahl Mayor Richard McKeon cut the ribbon officially opening the Shoreby Club. A black-tie gala followed to celebrate the club's opening. Members were impressed with what they experienced with the first view of the library, bar, and lounge to the overall ambiance of the elegant and gracious décor.

The Shoreby Club has continued to provide members with an exclusive, residentially-styled private club recognized for outstanding cuisine and flawless service, the perfect setting for unsurpassed social and business entertaining.
