Earlier this summer I was curious to see what was going on with the Wollaston Yacht Club. Last year the place seemed as though it was condemned. While walking by I noticed there was an open house sign. I had to go in. At first glance everything seems okay. As I walked in I was greeted by a passing member that assured me if I had any questions the steward/bartender or any other member could help. If for some chance they can't help, he'd be right back. The inside was pretty open and everyone (6 people) was really friendly. A guy at the bar ended up buying me a drink while we talked about all the changes around the place. I walked outside and it was beautiful. I sat on the deck and the steward brought me a really well priced huge burger and fries for under $8. It was better then most and it was a little bigger than the bun. Sweet place to bring a date, but a lot different than a restaurant. A few weeks later I went back with a friend and we had beer. It was one of those 100 degree nights, but the back deck at the club had a nice breeze. Beer was 2 bucks for a can, 3 for a bottle! Everyone was going back and forth from the docks to get to the boats. There was an event that night (maybe a 30th birthday) and the people at the party told us we're welcome to stay and to help ourselves to the food. (It's a private club, that's open to the public a lot, during events, we shouldn't have been there, but they invited us to stay) It was a great time. Great people. Both my friend and I ended up joining for $50. The $50 gets us access to the club Thursday through Sunday from 3pm to midnight or something like that. I never stay past 10. $50 to enjoy awesome sunsets and hang out with nice boating people that I hope will bring me for a cruise sometimes. I give it 5 stars because it was a great time for so little money and the people were great. It wasn't fancy and we didn't pay for fancy, but it was respectful and friendlier then most places. The food was a lot better than I thought it would be and even joining the club cost as much as a dinner for two, but it'll last all year! Can't beat it. As one of the oldest clubs in Massachusetts, Wollaston Yacht Club is always looking for good people to build a family friendly and fun atmosphere for boaters to enjoy. Membership gives you 24-hour access to your boat, use of club skiffs, day time docking with wash down access, comfortable and clean bathrooms with showers, a bar serving premium beers and wine, and a galley serving homemade comfort food. With the convenience of keeping your boat close to Boston, and an inexpensive alternative to a marina, WYC offers tender service on weekends and select weekdays and has a function room available for rent. Imagine camping under the stars at your mooring or going for a quick run around the bay after work! You might even decide to sit back and enjoy a sunset from our huge deck overlooking the bay and the Boston skyline.

Yacht clubs are an important institution on the Boston waterfront, and they are famous for being among the oldest in the country. For example, the South Boston Yacht Club was founded in 1868 and was one of the first 20 yacht clubs in the country to open its doors. Incidentally, most waterfronts in the West and South of the United States are served by marinas, but that is less so in Boston. Instead, many boaters join a local yacht club, and there are over 70 of them around Boston to choose from.
Most yacht clubs operate on a membership basis, and rules and fees vary a great deal among clubs. Each yacht club is a unique organisation with its own traditions, ideas, and membership. However, most clubs provide the most essential services to boaters, like docking, mooring, launch services, racing programmes, youth programmes, and social events. Increasingly, yacht clubs offer both regular memberships and social memberships. The latter accommodates folks who do not use the boating facilities of the club but simply want to be part of the social events and privileges of the club. Such memberships are generally half the cost of a regular membership.
Membership fees vary and depend a lot on the location, size, and type of facilities of the club. Many clubs also require a one-time initiation fee. Some yacht clubs are easy to join; others have a waiting list and may require recommendations by other members.
Many yacht clubs rent out their facilities to non-members, offering their attractive waterfront venues for weddings, birthdays, or functions.
