The Enchantment and it's crew were beyond expectation. The yacht accommodated 7 of us with ease and provided a smooth ride in some not so calm seas. Our captain and first mate were extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about each stop along our way around St. John. Each stop provided excellent snorkeling, including sea turtle sightings and nurse shark sightings. Our drinks were always full and the food was perfect in taste and presentation. Thanks Carrie and crew for such an awesome experience!!

Nate and Emma were awesome! They were friendly and fun which added to the experience. They listened to what we wanted to do and made it happen. The boat is fantastic. My family will never forget swimming with the turtles, hitting some great snorkeling spots only accessible by boat, and seeing the beautiful sights of St. John.

Was a great trip even though conditions weren’t ideal. Dustin made the best of it and wouldn’t give up. Very knowledgeable about fishing and patient with putting us on the fish. Caught a Blue Runner which ended up being eaten at the boat by a big Barracuda!

Fabulous day with a knowledgeable captain on a very comfortable boat. Captain Rick customized the trip to our group’s every need and preference. He and his assistant Rachel provided an uniquely memorable Caribbean experience we can highly recommend.

Petroglyph Spur

Featuring a steep climb and narrow path, Petroglyph Spur Trail offers a bit of a challenge. However, the reward is indeed worth all the sweat and exhaustion. Aside from a freshwater pond, this trail offers viewings of petroglyphs from as early as 300 A.D. You might even see newly discovered ones.

Francis Bay Walking Trail is among the easiest of St. John hiking trails to traverse, and it’s also wheelchair-accessible. While the vegetation is a little brushy in some spots, the views are undeniably picturesque. It also features the Salt Pond and a dry tropical forest for you to explore

In 1969, NASA along with the US Navy and the Department of Interior (DOI) launched a study at Lameshur Bay to evaluate what would happen when people live and work underwater. The first structure that was built for this experiment was called Tektite, and the Tektite Trail follows the original quarter mile road used to deliver supplies to the aquanauts. Unmarked and barely visible, the entrance to the Tektite Trail starts at the bottom of the concrete paved road that leads to both Great and Little Lameshur bays.

The first Tektite experiment was a success and a second experiment, deemed Tektite II, was launched later that year that included the world’s first all-female team of scientists to live underwater. Tektite and Tektite II were each built of two cylindrical tubes about 12 feet wide and 18 feet high that sat 50 feet underwater throughout the mission.

Today the structure is gone, but the underlying foundation underwater remains, as does the trail to the entrance. The original base camp is now the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS), located between Great and Little Lameshur Bays and run by Clean Islands International on behalf of the University of the Virgin Islands. Visit the Tektite Museum at VIERS for some cool artifacts from that crazy time in 1969.

Trunk Bay is the most popular beach and considered one of the top beaches in the world. There is a $4.00 charge per person daily from 7:30am – 4:30pm. Trunk Bay is a picturesque location for weddings any time of the day. It is most noted for sunset weddings.

Hawksnest Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand. It is an unforgettable place for a wedding. It offers restrooms and a place to change clothes for the Bridal couple and their guests. Hawksnest Beach is best for morning weddings because the lighting is absolutely phenomenal for photographs. There are no fees to enter or to use this beach and there is plenty of parking. Ceremonies of St. John offers canopy and chair rentals.

Annaberg Plantation

Annaberg Plantation Ruins was once a Danish sugar mill and plantation back in 1780. It was named after William Gottschalk’s daughter. Annaberg translates to Anna’s Hill. There are many charming settings for a wedding ceremony to be held within this elegant historical plantation with breathtaking views.

The ruins are open to the public and protected by the Virgin Islands National Park. If you are interested in having your wedding here you would want to schedule it in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Since the plantation is open to the public, it can get very crowded during mid day.

Clearly marked and accessible from North Shore Road (Rt. 20), the Peace Hill Trail offers far more than the obvious. A small parking lot allows for only about eight cars and is rarely full. Follow a wide path straight up from the parking lot to a flat knoll where lies an old sugar mill ruin. Great 300 degree view of the North Shore of St. John and across to the British Virgin Islands, those who only go this far are missing the best part.

From the parking lot on the way up to Peace Hill is an unmarked entrance to a half mile trail that takes you directly to Denis Bay beach. The trail and the west area of Denis Bay are park land, while the land to the east with a residential dwelling is privately owned. The west side of Denis Bay is the most interesting, with large black volcanic rocks, warmed sitting pools, and a small rocky island just off the shoreline with excellent snorkeling all around. Denis Bay also offers interesting sights and sounds. Boats cruise along the North Shore of St. John (Windward Passage and The Narrows) heading through Sir Francis Drake Channel to the British Virgin Islands, which can be seen from Denis Bay beach in the distance. Water crafts range from small motored dinghies to multi-hulled sailing vessels, and there’s never a shortage of things to watch. Visitors to Denis Bay beach are guaranteed an active view and a classic tropical beach environment.

Bordeaux Mountain

Heading down the Bordeaux Mountain trail is a breeze, and puts hikers at Little Lameshur Bay for a refreshing dip in the clear Caribbean Sea. Heading up, you’ll wish you had made other plans!

Bordeaux Mountain trail is accessible at the top of Bordeaux Mountain Road, from an often unmarked trail head, and descends steeply a little more than a mile to the bay below. Head west to the Lameshur Bay trail to get to Reef Bay, or head east down the road to Great Lameshur Bay. Remember, only the latter will have any jeep traffic, so if you’re tired and looking to hitch, don’t head to Reef Bay!

Europa Spur

Along the Lameshur Bay trail is a spur trail to Europa Bay, about a half mile in. When the Lameshur Bay trail reaches the Reef Bay trail, make a right up the Reef Bay trail just 50 yards to the Petroglyph spur trail, or make a left down the Reef Bay trail about a mile to the Reef Bay Sugar Mill ruins, Reef Bay beach and greater Genti Bay.

Yawzi Point

Surprisingly named for a disease called Yaws, Yawzi Point marks the location where natives who were stricken years ago were isolated. Accessible from the Lameshur Bay beach road (between Great Lameshur Bay and Little Lameshur Bay), the Yawzi Point trail is just over a quarter mile and offers hikers a great sampling of local vegetation and breathtaking waterfront overlooks.

Almost two miles from Lameshur Bay to Reef Bay, the Lameshur Bay trail offers many points of interests to hikers. Accessible from the end of Rt. 107 (Lameshur Bay road), the trail is wide and wanders through deep forest for the first half mile, then follows a ridge called the White Cliffs for the second half, ending about a mile up from the water at the Reef Bay trail. Hikers will find massive hollow trees still standing, wild deer and mongoose, and dozens of different birds enjoying the day overhead. Hiking along the White Cliffs of Lameshur Bay trail will bring you into bright sun, so remember the sunblock when you pack that extra water.

One of the trails that are open year-round is Cinnamon Bay Trail. Dogs are allowed, but they must be on a leash. With its shaded loop, this trail is beautiful and pleasant to visit anytime. This trail offers a close-up look at the old sugar factories, echoing the island’s history.

L'Esperance

You won’t find this trail on the national park hiking maps for St. John Island, but L’Esperance is one of the most interesting. Catch the entrance to L’Esperance trail on the south side of Centerline Rd. (Route 10) about a quarter mile past the Virgin Islands National Park sign at Catherineberg. Round trip, the L’Esperance trail is almost six miles, so bring plenty of water and start your hike early in the day to ensure you will return before dark. L’Esperance trail follows the Fish Bay Gut, with at least four different ruins sites not seen by many visitors. The trail veers east about halfway down and crosses over the Mollendal gut along the Sieben Ridge and down to Genti Bay, the greater area of water of which Reef Bay beach lies just to the east. You’ve hiked this far, might as well walk on over to the Reef Bay Sugar Mill ruins, just beyond the forest line at the beach, and down the Reef Bay trail about a mile to the Petroglyphs spur trail.

Untouched and unspoiled are two of the best descriptions for the Brown Bay Trail. While it’s among the list of St. John, USVI, hiking trails that are not very well-maintained, it has its own charm and beauty. It leads to a private shallow cove that offers a peaceful escape. You will see starfish, conch, and loads of fish there.

Johnny Horn

Considered a moderately challenging route, Johnny Horny Trail takes about two hours to complete. It features a clear path, thanks to the foraging feral donkeys and goats in the area. This trail is steep and exposed to the sun, so you might want to bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you energized. It leads to historical sites and amazing views.

Turtle Point

With the rugged natural setting of Turtle Point Trail, you are sure to experience refreshing tropical breezes and witness impressive views. It follows Hawksnest Point’s rocky shoreline and passes through a dry forest and coastal terrain. Along the path, there are strategically placed benches where you can sit and relax.

Salt Pond Drunk Bay Spur

If you’ve opted to head out to Salt Pond, one of the national park beaches along the south shore of St. John Island, and you’re looking for a nice surprise, hike the short Drunk Bay spur trail, which starts at the far east end of Salt Pond bay and follows the Salt Pond along the north side for a half mile to Drunk Bay. A flat, and sometimes hot, walk from Salt Pond, Drunk Bay offers visitors who make the trek a fun surprise.

While the rocky, rough shores of Drunk Bay are not conducive to swimming, the famous bay clearly supports, and some say prompts, creative expression. While you may not see them at first, look closely to discover dozens, then hundreds, of coral statues along the rocky beach. Using the various formations of coral along the shoreline, inspired visitors for decades have created a bevy of “coral people” using the stones to create heads, torsos, arms and legs. Partially shredded coconut for hair, sargassum weed for clothes, and crooked pieces of drift wood allow for unlimited artistic opportunities. Add your creative two cents and build your beauty at Drunk Bay.

Drunk Bay Spur

If visiting Salt Pond, take an easy, quarter-mile flat hike over to Drunk Bay. Drunk Bay shore is rocky with rough waves, but also has a surprise awaiting all who visit. It takes only some coral with a little flotsam and jetsam thrown in to make the island’s most creative outlet. Hike the short distance over to Drunk Bay to find out for yourself what everyone is talking about!

Being one of the most unique and visually stimulating St. John, USVI, hiking trails, there’s no way you should miss Ram Head Trail. This one takes you on a rocky path that leads to a blue cobble beach, the hillside, and then finally, an overlook that’s 200 feet above the Caribbean Sea.

My husband and I had the best time on this excursion. This was by far the highlight of our trip!! We got to see different islands and learn so much history about St John and St Thomas. The crew also had snorkel gear so we could snorkel each island we stopped at, we saw a sunken ship, sea turtles, stingrays. The crew was OUTSTANDING, Kenny and Susanna went above and beyond and made the best cocktails. This was such a wonderful experience!! Highly recommend stormy pirates. (I even changed my pick up from st Thomas to St. John and they were so accommodating)

What a way to spend a day. Met the crew at the dock, jumped on the boat, and had the time of our lives for the day. A couple of snorkel stops, a little sightseeing of the beautiful island of St. John, and then lunch at Lime Out Taco Bar. Lime Out was an excellent experience floating in the clear water surrounded by a beautiful area and eating some great tacos. This was my second trip with Stormy Pirates, and I brought the entire family as my first trip with them was great. Thanks to the crew for making this a day to remember.

We had an amazing time on their Sale Pending 2 boat. Captain Rich was funny and a really good Captain, we knew we were in good hands and safe. Tara, the crew member was so authentically attentive and caring. We had drinks all day long, sodas, water, punch, cocktails. They had fruit and muffins waiting, a scheduled pizza delivery on the boat, snorkeling equipment and the knowledge the guests needed to find sea creatures. Guide to St John

A nature lover’s paradise

The smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands , St John lies just to the east of St Thomas, and is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, with most of the island protected by the Virgin Islands National Park.

Remote, tranquil and undeveloped compared to its neighbours in the Virgin Islands archipelago, St John offers a slower pace of life and is a popular destination for hikers, snorkelers and nature lovers. For yacht rentals , the entry point for most visitors is Cruz Bay, the island’s main town and commercial hub, located on the west coast. The harbour can accommodate yachts of up to 6om in length, and there are restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets here where you can stock up on provisions, as well as a white sand beach around the bay.

Quieter stretches of sand can be found within easy reach of Cruz Bay, such as the secluded Hart Bay, on the south coast, which is also a prime snorkelling spot. The rocky outcrop in the middle of the bay provides a habitat for a variety of Caribbean marine species, including parrotfish, bluehead wrasse and angelfish, as well as an array of hard corals. 

On the north coast, the stunning white sandy beach at Trunk Bay has been voted one of the best in the world, and receives more visitors than any other beach on St John. The sign-posted underwater snorkelling trail offshore is ideal for beginners, who can explore the colourful reefs and the tropical fish that live here at depths between 3m and 6m below the surface. 

Further along the north coast, Watermelon Cay is one of St John’s most popular snorkelling destinations, with its clear water providing excellent visibility for exploring the abundant sea life here, which includes turtles, rays, conches and small sharks. 

St John is a great place for scuba diving, too, with several sites worth investigating around the coast. One of the best is around Carval Rock, off the north coast, where experienced divers can explore 24m below the surface.

This trip was great. Captain Matt was awesome and so good with our the young kids (9 / 7 / 4). Highly recommended for a family looking for good snorkeling and a fun waterside! Add in the raft for more fun too. Oh, and definitely hit up Lime out! Check these guys out and definitely ask for Captain Matt!!!

Captain Kyle and Henry were fabulous! This activity made an incredible vacation fabulous! Kyle and Henry made everyone comfortable and make the trip fun. Kyle even gave us some history of the landmarks we saw. I would recommend Kyle and Henry and this boat ride as a must do!

This day was great and so was the boat and the captain. We had our family of 4 and we went out with Brian for a full day around St John. We had such a great time and he was the nicest person and so easy to talk to. He also knew alot about the island and its history. He also made the best rum punch. (best we had while on the island for a week) BEST DAY WE HAD ON VACAY. Highly recommend this company for your boat day needs and ask for Brian.

What a great time we had. Wedding went well, and the snorkeling at water island. They took us where we saw sea turtles and stingrays. The captain and Rachel we such great hosts, so attentive and just so nice. We all enjoyed our half day tour. Can’t say enough good things about them!

We spent half day celebrating our friends one-year Wedding Anniversary on Pisces catamaran! It was such an amazing time; Captain Connor and his first mate Chelsea were excellent! What an incredible day!! Captan Bryan is amazing and probably the best captain we’ve ever had! He listened to basically what we wanted to do and then crafted the itinerary to perfection. We circumnavigated St. John and he took us to some of the most beautiful spots for snorkeling and just relaxing in the water. His superb timing got us to Lime Out for lunch at JUST the right time to secure us the best Lilly pad in the house! He was personal and informative and took the trip (which would have been great by itself) to the next level. Highly recommend!!

We had an absolutely fabulous day with Glenn! Truly, it could not have been better! Glenn is a very experienced sailor and very knowledgeable about the Caribbean. He is also a great guy and we all thoroughly enjoyed hanging with him for the day. We snorkeled at several great spots in the BVI, visited Willie T's and Soggy Dollar.

Whenever we visit St John "Boat Day" is always everyone's favorite day of the the vacation. This year was fabulous! We are a 3 generation family of 11 with six kids ages 9 and under. Captain Alex and First mate Aaron found out exactly what we like to do and they made it happen. The snorkeling was amazing, lunch from the pizza boat was delicious and fun and the time out on the water all day cannot be beat. Thank you Seas the Day and especially to Alex and Aaron. An amazing experience to St. John! We went to snorkel at 2 different places that were both beautiful! Captain Greg and Coleman were amazing and so nice. They answered all of our many questions about the island and gave us the best information. They were so knowledgeable! The US Virgin Islands are famous for their amazing snorkeling and rich marine life. The smallest of them, St John is very popular with good reason. With lush forests, crystalline waters and a National Park that covers more than half of the island, it is proud to offer wonderful landscape above and under the sea too. This is a perfect destination if you wish to witness some of the best Caribbean Sea marine life. While snorkeling in St John, you can observe multi-colored coral reefs, swim with sea turtles, rays and nurse sharks. Are you ready to dive? Then keep reading and we take you to the top spots!

Hansen bay beach, hawksnest beach, maho bay beach, salt pond beach, oppenheimer beach, lameshur beach, salomon bay, honeymoon beach, francis bay beach, waterlemon cay – leinster bay, snorkeling in st john since hurricane irma and maria.

Most spots for snorkeling in Saint John lie inside calm bays with a sandy bottom gently sloping out into the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea. Even if you aren’t an expert swimmer, the shallow waters offer great opportunity to get up close to sea life and underwater scenery and you don’t have to venture far from the beach to start bumping into local aquatic inhabitants.

If you respect their space and approach them slowly, the fish, turtles, sharks, octopus and crabs in the sea won’t at all mind you hanging out around them. It’s important to be careful around slippery rocks and prickly coral, but as long as no risks are taken this island paradise is a safe place to explore.

St John is one of the best places to snorkel in the Caribbean with excellent weather conditions year-round. Sea temperatures range from around 79F from January to April to around 84F from September to October. The driest part of the year runs from February to March, making it an ideal period to visit if you want to be sure to avoid periods of rain that sometimes pass by the islands.

The changing tides affect your St John snorkeling experience, but not seriously. The highest tides are in September and November and the lowest occur from May to June. The calm and protected waters around St John guarantee that ocean surfs are rarely a problem, but from May to October there’s the least chance of waves blowing in from the ocean.

Best spots for snorkeling in St John US Virgin Islands

A privately-owned area that’s been in the family for generations, Hansen Bay Beach definitely has to be among the best Saint John snorkeling spots. Seeking a natural vibe, the owners of this stretch of white sandy beach along the bay have opened it up to visitors to explore.

This pristine corner of the Caribbean Sea is not just a prime place for relaxation but also an excellent seeking out sea life and soak up the natural wonders of the Caribbean Sea. Besides being a prime snorkeling spot, you can also rent kayaks or simply hang out on the sand.

Hawksnest Beach is a great place to experience the sea. Although it is unprotected from the wind and surf, there’s less sea life and coral reef around this beach due to the larger waves, but it’s still a great St John snorkeling spot.

Besides snorkeling, this beach is full of soft sand and surrounded by lush vegetation creating an unforgettable tropical backdrop.

The best St John snorkeling places list must include Maho Bay. Fringed by coconut palms, full of gentle waves, easy to find, and full of coral reefs and other sea life, Maho is famous for a reason!

It’s a top spot to go snorkeling in St John from the beach. Just offshore lie beds of seagrass that attract turtles and rays, and along the western and eastern shores of the bay you find coral reefs. Head towards the east if you want to see lots of coral lying in shallow water. Head west if you want to see schools of fish and perhaps even a Nurse shark resting under the corals.

With a reputation as a great St John snorkeling place, Salt Pond Beach is ideal for spotting the aquatic life of the US Virgin Islands. From the pristine natural biosphere in the bay to its beautiful sandy beach, Salt Pond is a prime location for those who want to spend a relaxing, yet adventure-filled day.

Out in the middle of the bay sit two large rock formations, where lots of varieties of fish enjoy hanging out. Once you swim out to them, you can spend hours exploring the colorful Caribbean marine life and get up close with many colorful and curious sea-dwelling locals. Moreover, there are extensive seagrass fields too that attract eagle rays and sea turtles.

Accommodation tip nearby: Concordia Eco Resort

A secluded beach that used to be a private property and that still features a historic home close to the water, Oppenheimer is a quiet getaway for those who want to soak up the beachside wonders of the Caribbean Sea. Oppenheimer Beach captures the ingredients that make the USVI so idyllic: soft, warm sand, gentle tides, and lots of marine life.

This is a prime St John snorkeling place, where you can spot a wide variety of corals as well as schools of fish, especially in the tiny cove on the right of the old Oppenheimer house. And all of this despite parts of the reef suffering recent damage from nearby construction runoffs.

The snorkeling trail in St John USVI is an underwater, self-guided snorkeling trail in 8-15 ft deep water that leads you on an underwater journey of discovery through the coral reefs and fish of the Caribbean like wrasses, blue tangs, triggerfish, and yellowtail snappers. Underwater plaques laid out along a 650-foot underwater pathway provide information about everything you might see along the way.

Anyone who enjoys snorkeling must visit this hidden gem called Francis Bay. You can get there by car, or also hike if you want to enjoy the beautiful nature too. Usually, Francis Bay is not crowded since not many people walk know this place, so if you want to enjoy the sun and sea in peace and calm, it is definitely a place for you!

The water is calm with easy access. There aren’t many corals here, but it is a prime spot to hang out with turtles and rays that love to rest and feed in the seagrass.

Described by locals as one of the best snorkeling spots in St John, Waterlemon Cay lies within Leinster Bay and is chock full of coral and all kinds of sea life. All Saint John snorkeling spots have something nice to offer, but if you are looking for the healthiest coral and richest marine life, you should definitely visit Henley Cay. It is an advanced snorkel spot because of its remoteness and sometimes strong currents, therefore recommended only for confident swimmers, but it is considered as one of the best U.S. Virgin Islands snorkeling places with good reason.

To get there, you can book a boat charter or sign up for a kayak tour. The most beautiful part of the reef runs on the western side of the cay. With wonderful gorgonians, sea fans, and large shoals of fish, you will feel like swimming in an aquarium! On top of these, this is a place where you have a high chance to see nurse sharks too!

Since hurricanes hit the Caribbean in 2017, it’s been a challenge for the reefs of the US Virgin Islands to bounce back. There are signs of recovery and there’s still plenty of fish, turtles, and sharks hanging around despite the upheaval caused by the hurricanes, but some reefs suffered serious damage.

The coral reefs at Trunk and Salomon Bays took quite a hit during the storm and are still recovering, so don’t be surprised if you don’t find many healthy corals at these spots at the moment. Maho Bay, Lameshur Beach, and Leinster were less affected, so if you are on a tight schedule, consider visiting these places.
