A metaverse mega yacht that just sold for $650,000 is the most expensive NFT sold in The Sandbox virtual world
- A mega yacht just sold for around $650,000, HypeBeast first reported.
- The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht was purchased for 149 ether.
The Sandbox is a virtual world where players can build, own, and monetize their gaming experiences.
A mega yacht just sold for around $650,000, making it the most expensive non-fungible token ever sold in The Sandbox virtual gaming world.
The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht was purchased for 149 ether, according to etherscan. It is described as an ultra-luxury megayacht, featuring a DJ booth, two helipads, and a hot tub, among other amenities. HypeBeast was the first to report.
The digital asset was released by Republic Realm, a metaverse developer, for The Fantasy Collection line of luxury NFTs designed for The Sandbox. Other luxury products include private islands, jet skis, and speedboats.
Players can create digital assets such as NFTs and upload them to the marketplace, according to its white paper . Those who own sand, the main utility token of the platform, can participate in the governance of the platform via a decentralized autonomous organization, or DAO.
The sale of luxury items in the metaverse, a new three-dimensional iteration of the internet, has been making headlines as of late.
In November, a plot of digital land in Decentraland , a virtual world, was sold for $2.43 million — a hefty price tag that trumped the cost of most homes in New York City and San Francisco.
A day after, another plot of digital land sold for $2.3 million in Axie Infinity, another virtual world.
The sales continue to highlight the momentum of how much investors are willing to pay to secure their lots before the metaverse enters the mainstream.
The acceleration in interest has also fueled steep rises in the value of the cryptocurrencies that are linked to the virtual world, from Decentraland's mana token to Sandbox's sand coin.

Someone bought a $650,000 NFT yacht for a game that hasn't been released
What if we took the beloved children's game Minecraft, and added the concept of private property?
In the latest development of the NFT techno-financial trash fire none of us are allowed to look away from, Hypebeast reports that an NFT yacht just sold for $650,000. More precisely, the "Metaflower Super Mega Yacht" went for 149 "WETH" or "Wrapped Ethereum." Its utility over regular Ethereum eludes me, but crypto people love having multiple barriers of transfers, digital wallets, and withdrawals between the money of the future and money you can use to pay your rent.
The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht's lucky (and anonymous) owner will be able to enjoy its completely digital DJ booth, helicopter landing pad, and single hot tub in "The Fantasy Islands," a self-described "luxury real estate development project of 100 NFT private islands (comprised of NFT land in the Sandbox + architecturally unique 3D NFT villas) on the Ethereum blockchain."
Are you still with me? You're going to wish you weren't. This unimpressive 3D model and attending luxury resort will live in " the Sandbox ", a blockchain-based, self-described "metaverse." Its low-fi aesthetic and emphasis on user-generated content are strongly reminiscent of Roblox, as is its cosmetics-centric monetization, but on a vastly different scale. This is NFTs and the blockchain, so instead of little 12-year-olds sneaking their parents' credit cards so they can look like Thanos, it's adults with fully developed brains dropping $16,585 for the " Female Teacher " player model, which isn't even one of a kind. Have I mentioned that the Sandbox is still in a closed alpha?
If nothing else, all of this makes me feel better about buying League of Legends' Dunkmaster Darius skin for fifteen bucks back in 2014. Maybe if the Dunkmaster was on the blockchain, I wouldn't have lost him and my other skins when Riot updated their account system in early 2020. (I do not mourn their loss.) If all goes well, hopefully this stuff will all go down like the Hindenburg without taking the global financial system with it.

This Whole Metaverse Mega Yacht NFT Makes Me Want To Die
The metaflower super mega yacht just sold for $650,000 in the sandbox virtual world.
I can’t believe I have to write these words, but a giant virtual yacht just sold on a video game for $650,000 in real money, well real crytocurrency , successfully combining all the worst aspects of the NFT and crypto trends into an actual and yet somehow still fake purchase, as reported by Hypebeast and Business Insider .

There are a lot of moving parts to this whole situation, so I’m going to try to break it down for those of us — myself included — who have no idea what on Earth is happening. This sale took place in something called The Sandbox , which is basically a virtual gaming world, a “ metaverse” where players can “play, build, own, and monetize their virtual experiences,” the website claims.

I feel like this whole concept needs an example to make it make sense. Let’s say you built a house i n Minecraft (or some other video game of your choice). Despite the fact that you built it, it’s still technically ‘owned’ by the makers of Minecraft . In The Sandbox , anything you make is owned by you, and you can sell it for in-game tokens that have a monetary value in the real world, theoretically.
On gaming platforms like The Sandbox , then, people can buy and sell luxury items like yachts . And this giant yacht — horrifically christened the Metaflower Super Mega Yacht — sold for 149 E thereum , which at this moment translates to about $650,000 in real, actual money.
Were The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht a real thing, it would probably be pretty cool. Metaverse trading website OpenSea says it has “a DJ booth, helicopter landing pad, and hot tub, among other amenities” and “provides access to The Fantasy Marina and is designed to be the crown jewel of The Sandbox. ” But I can’t park it in the harbor and watch the Monaco Grand Prix — unless there’s expensive virtual racing in The Sandbox ? — so the concept just seems ridiculous.
It also just looks... like a low-poly yacht. I don’t get it.
As you’ve probably gathered by now, I simply don’t see the appeal of this whole... thing. I can’t wrap my head around spending my hard-earned dollars on something that only exists virtually, but some people have seen enough value in it to spend over $2 million on virtual plots of Sandbox land. And I can’t find anyone to explain the point of the metaverse’s so-called “three-dimensional internet” who haven’t already totally bought into the idea.
I think I’ll just stick to my Animal Crossing , where I can spend my hard-earned fake money on fake luxury items without it ever costing me a cent in real life. The rest of you... well, good luck.

- Details about the buyer remains unknown
- Sandbox has other NFTs like jet skies and speed boats
In the Sandbox virtual gaming world, a mega yacht has been sold for a whopping $650,000 (roughly Rs. 4.8 crore). Part of the metaverse, this virtual luxury ship is called the “Metaflower Super Mega Yacht”, featuring two helipads, hot tubs, and a DJ booth among other lavish facilities. With this purchase, the Metaflower yacht has become the most expensive non-fungible token (NFT) to have been sold in the Sandbox — a virtual world built on the Ethereum blockchain that allows players to gather digital collectibles, build their own games, and monitise their experiences.
Metaverse is a futuristic, three-dimensional version of the Internet that can potentially sustain a fully functional virtual universe.
At a time when the concept of metaverse is beginning to echo in gaming and crypto spaces, the news of this purchase was quick to surface on social media.

The pricey digital asset was released by Republic Realm, a metaverse developer. It was especially designed as part of a luxury NFT series, designed for The Sandbox. Private islands, speed boats as well as jet skis are other products that are on this series.
This is, however, not the first time a metaverse property has garnered a large amount of money in sales.

Earlier in November, a plot of land was sold for $2.43 million (roughly Rs. 18 crore) in Decentraland, which is also a decentralised, 3-dimensional virtual reality universe built on the Ethereum blockchain. People can buy pieces of land, estates, and wearables for their virtual avatars to customise their experience of existing in an alternate reality. All the buyable items are NFTs — digital collectibles with value.
Recently, another chunk of digital land was purchased for $2.3 million (roughly Rs. 17 crore) in the virtual gaming world of Axie Infinity .
Bloomberg Intelligence expects the market opportunity for the metaverse to reach $800 billion (roughly Rs. 59,58,719 crore) by 2024.

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.
“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”
But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.
Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.
The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.
An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?
When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.
But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.
Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.
Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.
The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.
Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.
The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.
Open hatches or doors?
The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.
Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.
At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.
12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.
Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.
Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.
The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.
A retracted keel?
The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.
But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.
Human error?
Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.
“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”
It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.
Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.
Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.
Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.
The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.
Someone Paid $650,000 for a Nonexistent Yacht in the Metaverse
The yacht is comically hideous, and can only be described as "minecraft-esque" with its blocky design., ghost yacht.
Listen, we’re not here to lecture you about how you should and shouldn’t spend your money — but you definitely should never spend more than half a million dollars on a make-believe yacht you’ll never be able to physically step foot on.
And yet, it happened. Somebody paid roughly $650,000 in ethereum for an NFT yacht that only exists in an also-ran metaverse platform last week.
The sale was made by metaverse and NFT developer Republic Realm for the metaverse platform The Sandbox, first spotted by Hypebeast . The yacht — dubbed "The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht" — sold for 149 ETH, making it the most expensive NFT asset on the platform.
Congrats to the new owner of The Metaflower NFT Super Mega Yacht on making metaverse NFT history. Digital Specs
The yacht is comically hideous, and can only be described as "Minecraft-esque" with its blocky design. It’s made up of four stories complete with lounge areas, a hot tub, dance floor, DJ booth, and two helipads (nonexistant helicopters sold separately). You can check it out and right-click to your heart's content on its OpenSea listing .
The yacht is a part of Republic Realm’s "The Fantasy Collection," a line of luxury NFTs developed for The Sandbox platform that includes jet skis, speedboats, and private islands along with marinas and beach clubs. So there’s still plenty of opportunities to set your money on fire if you feel like it.
So yeah, it’s pretty absurd to drop so much money on a yacht you can’t ever physically enjoy. However, there are some upsides to it if you squint hard enough. Since it’s all digital, there’s no upkeep and maintenance costs for the yacht. Plus, if you have enough money to spend more than half a million on an NFT, it’s probably a rather insignificant amount to you anyway.
The only challenge now: Finding friends to join you on your make-believe yacht. There might not be enough money in the world for that.

Metaflower: Mega Yacht NFT Breaks Record
To everyone’s surprise, even those immersed in these metaverses of blockchains and virtual coins, a mega yacht named Metaflower Super Mega Yacht released by Republic Realm, a metaverse developer, sold in November 2021 for 149 Ethereum virtual coinage (valued at US$650,000).
As of this writing (January 2022), this maritime NFT, Metaflower , is the most expensive asset sold in the Ethereum-based blockchain metaverse. Take a look at this NFT for yourself.
The virtual mega yacht is luxury well-imagined with 3 decks that include two helipads, several lounge areas, a jacuzzi, and a DJ booth.
The Metaflower NFT was part of a luxury series developed for The Sandbox. The series categorized in the site’s ‘Fantasy Collection’ gave holders exclusive access to a beach club and ‘Fantasy Marina’ within which they could purchase the Metaflower and other mega yachts as well as speed boats, private islands, jet skis, and, well, basically, all the luxury maritime things that the wealthy enjoy purchasing in the non-virtual world…the place we call reality.
What is an NFT?
The Sandbox game virtual world gives artists, especially those with a gaming interest, a “canvas” to create non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Other Notable Luxury NFTs
Sandbox has earned other headlines including a series of ‘Fantasy Islands,’ comprising several islands with gorgeous villas built on digital NFT land. It sold in under 24 hours at 63.9 Ether tokens, approximately US$280,000.

First virtual superyacht sold for $650k in the metaverse
The Metaflower NFT Super Mega Yacht has been sold for 149 ETH (Ethereum) in the Sandbox by metaverse developer Republic Realm.
The metaverse is a world beyond the real world. It combines different elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality and video so users can “live” in the digital universe. These virtual spaces allow users to interact in a computer-generated world and are limited only by the creativity of the designers.
This new world has gained global awareness from individuals and corporations. As more people become more immersed by this virtual world, so does the quality of the virtual products. This is what led Republic Realm to develop and design the Metaflower yacht: the first NFT megayacht sold for 149 ETH, the equivalent to $650,000.
The Sandbox metaverse is a virtual gaming world where players build, own and monetize their virtual experience. This means people can buy and sell luxury items like yachts. This was the case of the Metaflower.
Republic Realm has created 100 private islands on the platform so the superyacht can travel across the digital world and mimic the lifestyle yacht owners have. These islands were limited to 100, and users bought them in a record time: they were less than 24h on the market. Each island has a price of 63.9 ETH (approximately $280,000).
However, the Metaflower superyacht is more exclusive than the fantasy islands as it has been developed as a one-off NFT. The Metaflower has been reported as an ultra-luxurious mega yacht. It features a DJ booth, helicopter landing pad with two fully functional helicopters, hot tub, dance floor and other amenities. The Fantasy Collection NFT also grants access to The Fantasy Marina.

Understanding the Metaverse
For many, terms of the metaverse are hard to understand as the metaverse is a recent concept. The Sandbox is an open metaverse where people can play, create, own and govern a metaverse created by players. If you have ever played Minecraft , it is very similar to this.
By completing objectives you can earn SAND or NFTs. SAND is the virtual currency of the metaverse that allows you to buy and sell lands and assets, and it has real money value. Sandbox crypto has touched new all-time highs as Sandbox sees its first users land in virtual reality.
NFTs stand for Non-Fungible Tokens, and these are virtual tokens that are minted on the blockchain for digital security, scarcity and authenticity. They are unique, indivisible and non-interchangeable, meaning they allow true digital ownership. At current rates, NFTs are worth over $4000 apiece , but the value increases depending on the experience it provides. The Metaflower super mega yacht is an example of a luxury NFTs sold in the metaverse.

- Mega Yacht Sold in Metaverse for $650,000, Becoming the Most Expensive NFT in Sandbox Virtual World
The "Metaflower Super Mega Yacht" is a three-story white virtual luxury ship with two helipads, hot spas, and a DJ booth.
The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht was successfully auctioned by Metaverse developer Republic Realm for 149 ETH (about $650,000 USD), making it the most expensive NFT asset in The Sandbox.
The Sandbox is presently one of the most popular metaverse games, with collaborations with businesses and celebrities such as adidas, Atari, Bored Ape Yacht Club, Binance, Snoop Dogg, The Smurfs, DeadMau5, and others. On the site, Republic Realm has created a series of "Fantasy Islands" comprised of 100 private islands.
A giant boat has been auctioned for a stunning $650,000 in the Sandbox virtual game environment (roughly Rs. 4.8 crore). This virtual luxury ship, which is part of the metaverse, is dubbed the " Metaflower Super Mega Yacht ," and it has two helipads, hot tubs, and a DJ booth, among other opulent amenities. The Metaflower boat has become the most expensive non-fungible token (NFT) to be sold in the Sandbox – a virtual environment created on the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to acquire digital items, construct their own games, and monetise their experiences.
The Metaverse is a three-dimensional, future version of the Internet that has the capacity to support a fully operating virtual environment.
The news of this transaction quickly spread on social media, at a time when the notion of the metaverse is beginning to reverberate in the gaming and crypto industries.
According to the photos, this boat is three-story and white in color. This NFT was paid for using 149 Ether tokens.
Congrats to the new owner of The Metaflower NFT Super Mega Yacht on making metaverse NFT history. This auction marks the highest price paid for a @TheSandboxGame NFT asset at 149 ETH ($650,000), and an exciting time for every member of the Fantasy Community. pic.twitter.com/Nl0278JbOT — Republic Realm (@joinrepublic_re) November 24, 2021
Republic Realm, a metaverse developer, issued the costly digital asset. It was created specifically for The Sandbox as part of a premium NFT series. Other goods in this series include private islands, speed boats, and jet skis.
This is not, however, the first time a metaverse property has sold for a considerable sum of money.
Earlier this month, a parcel of land in Decentraland, a decentralized, 3-dimensional virtual reality environment created on the Ethereum blockchain, was sold for $2.43 million (approximately Rs. 18 crore). People may purchase plots of land, estates, and wearables for their virtual avatars in order to personalize their experience of living in an alternate world. All of the objects that may be purchased are NFTs – digital collectibles with monetary worth.
Another plot of digital property in the virtual game world of Axie Infinity was just acquired for $2.3 million (approximately Rs. 17 crore).
According to Bloomberg Intelligence, the business opportunity for the metaverse would be $800 billion (approximately Rs. 59,58,719 crore) by 2024.
Following Facebook's rebranding to "Meta" earlier this year, other digital behemoths such as Microsoft, Nvidia Omniverse, and Roblox Metaverse are getting into the metaverse groove.

The collection of islands, which consists of homes built on top of NFT land, sold out in less than 24 hours and now has a floor price of 63.9 ETH (about $280,000 USD). The unprecedented Metaflower Yacht is an expansion of the Fantasy Islands development and is a one-of-a-kind NFT that falls under the Fantasy Collection, a suite of luxury NFTs that includes private islands, jet skis, and speedboats, as well as exclusive access to the members-only beach club and Fantasy Marina. Two helipads, various lounge rooms, a Jacuzzi, and a dance floor are among the amenities on the four-story yacht. Here's a look at the NFT from every angle.

Someone Has Bought An Imaginary Yacht In The Metaverse For $650,000
A mega yacht has been auctioned for $650,000 in the Sandbox virtual game environment. The “Metaflower Super Mega Yacht,” a virtual luxury ship that is part of the metaverse, has two helipads, hot tubs, and a DJ booth, among other opulent amenities.
The Metaflower boat has now become the most valuable non-fungible token (NFT) ever sold in the Sandbox, a virtual environment based on the Ethereum blockchain that allows players to collect digital items, create their own games, and monetize their experiences.

The news of this transaction quickly spread on social media at a time when the concept of the metaverse is starting to gain traction in the gaming and crypto worlds.
Republic Realm, a metaverse, and NFT innovation and investment platform, created the virtual ship as part of its Fantasy Collection. It’s the most expensive non-fungible token ever sold in The Sandbox, according to Business Insider.
With its blocky design, the boat is laughably awful and can only be described as “Minecraft-esque.” There are lounge rooms, a hot tub, a dance floor, a DJ booth, and two helipads on the four-story building (nonexistent helicopters sold separately). On its OpenSea listing, you can look at it and right-click to your heart’s content.
The yacht is part of Republic Realm’s “The Fantasy Collection,” which includes jet skis, speedboats, private islands, marinas, and beach clubs. So, if you feel like it, there are still lots of possibilities to put your money on fire.
It’s crazy to spend so much money on a yacht you’ll never be able to use. If you squint hard enough, there are some benefits to it. The yacht has no upkeep or maintenance fees because everything is digital. Plus, if you have enough money to spend more than half a million on an NFT, it’s definitely a trivial sum to you.

Entertainment | brand new south bay shores waterpark opens at great america, ‘i was screaming. that was awesome,’ said jimmy pham, the first guest to brave the shark reef plunge.
Thus, it’s hardly a surprise that they were lined up outside California’s Great America — even before the gates officially opened — and ready for more fun on Saturday morning.
“We are here all the time. This will be our 10th time this season,” says Fremont’s Quotobi, noting that she had only missed one day since the park reopened in May after remaining shuttered during the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The staff members here are amazing. I think they are the reason why we keep coming back.”
Yet, there was another attraction that brought the Qutobis — and hundreds of other families — out to Great America on this particular day.
They were here to be among the first to experience South Bay Shores, the updated and upgraded waterpark area that opened to the public on Saturday. It takes over the old Boomerang Bay waterpark spot — and then some — adding 50 percent more room (expanding from 10 acres to 15) as well as nearly doubling the number of attractions.
There are now 18 attractions for families and other H2O fans to enjoy, compared to 10 that were available at the long-popular Boomerang Bay. A third of those can be found at what park officials have called “the main attraction” — Pacific Surge, an impressive complex of six slides that stands some six stories tall.
“As we safely reopen the park, we’re giving Bay Area residents even more reasons to call the park their favorite destination for fun,” says Barb Granter, Great America’s vice president and general manager.
The Byrne family — Kathleen and Jason with their sons Colson, 10, and Weston, 5 — came all the way up from Pismo Beach to check out the new waterpark.
“We’ve been waiting a whole year,” says Kathleen Byrne. “We’ve been really excited to check it out — be the first ones on opening day.”
Much of the advance buzz around South Bay Shores has been centered on Shark Reef Plunge, which sits atop the overall Pacific Surge complex. Those in search of a massive adrenalin rush will likely beeline for this four-slide attraction, which simultaneously sends four guests — each in separate enclosed tubes — on an amazingly fast ride down six stories. It begins as the floor literally drops out from under the riders and they embark on a nearly vertical free fall.
The first member of the general public to ever brave the Shark Reef Plunge turned out to be Jimmy Pham, who was basking in the excitement on Saturday after making the six-story drop — from start to finish — in a remarkable 10 seconds.
]”I was screaming,” said the 22-year-old Fremont resident. “That was awesome.”
Those looking for a more leisurely water-slide experience could check out the Feeding Frenzy and Barracuda slides, which are located one story down from the Shark Reef Plunge — on the fifth floor — on the Pacific Surge Complex. They still provide plenty of thrills, as guests glide down a series of drops and turns, only without the type of screaming that Pham described.
There’s also the new Tide Pool family lagoon area, featuring eight kid-sized water slides along the perimeter of a zero-depth-entry pool.
Plus, there’s just more room for relaxing now — especially in the new Grassy Gardens area, which is an ideal place for parents to kick back while the kids are on the slides. Great America has also tripled the number of dining options — moving from just one to now three — and given the place a whole new theme, ditching the Australian-themed Boomerang Bay motif for a classic California beach town vibe with South Bay Shores.
As it stands, organizers are operating the waterpark at 40 percent capacity — although that could change as more COVID-19 restrictions are lifted across California. Guests must also make reservations in advance to visit South Bay Shores online at cagreatamerica.com .
Thus far, officials are seeing a huge response to this new attraction — as well as to the overall park reopening.
“The pent-up demand that we hoped was there absolutely materialized,” says Jason Soyster, Great America’s director of marketing and sales.
Soyster also says that guests have been very agreeable to the park’s reopening safety guidelines, which include having people wear masks (but not, of course, on the water rides) and social distancing.
“I think it’s a testament to the market,” he says. “The people in the Bay Area really respect the protocols.
“People are so respectful and understanding that we are trying to open safely.”
