New ñ53 Racing Cruising Trimaran by McConaghy Boats

McConaghy Boats latest launch for an American client is a multihull with much pizzazz. The Banuls designed ñ53 Trimaran is a very fast cruising trimaran with wave piercing bows and modern clear carbon interior finishes. The ñ53 has been optimized for safety, performance and shorthanded cruising at killer speeds. Construction is carbon, E/glass with foam cores to make the boat super light. A carbon canting wing mast, Harken winches and Karver furlers ensure high performance under sail, whilst a 39HP engine and retracting bow thruster provides performance and control under power. It has a forward guest cabin, an aft owners’ suite, a generously-sized galley and saloon, full head with shower and carbon toilet provide a comfortable interior for extended cruising. An enclosed deck with navigation centre allows all round visibility with all sail handling controls close at hand. It is a machine! Check it out here.

Safety, Luxury, Speed. Without Compromise. These are the opening lines of the owner’s website.

“Having sailed on this stunning 53′ McConaghy trimaran I can only agree to these bold statements. We easily hit 19.5 knots in 15 knots of true wind speed. The helm, whether sailing upwind or downwind was feather-light and one single person could easily tack, jibe or reef. FINN is an amazing creation, envisioned by a very experienced yacht owner” …Gregor Tarjan, owner of Aeroyacht and official dealer for McConaghy Boats in the US.

Owner Statement:

In 2000, I did a two boat build program with Peter Johnstone in Cape Town. We agreed on hull shapes, pilothouse profiles, and forward cockpit for our cats. Pete Melvin did a great job designing the hulls. We each customized our own boats using a common platform. After my 62ft Safari  was launched, the iconic look became Gunboat. Although I never had financial or management interest in Gunboat, I was always proud to have made a strong contribution at a pivotal moment in cruising evolution.

Our family sailed tens of thousands of miles on Safari. It was the perfect boat for that moment in our lives. Yet, I felt as if something was still missing. I felt I was missing an intimacy with the experience and sheer thrill of sailing.

Cats are great at accommodations. But all those berths mean mouths to feed, which means more time provisioning, which means more time trying to figure out who is going where in the dinghy and when, which means more time waiting for everyone to be ready to go ashore at once, which means more time fixing things, which inevitably means less time sailing.

So I made a basic decision: my next boat would be for day sailing with 10 if I wanted, but coastal and offshore cruising of 4 adults and two kids max. Two cabins and one fabulous head is enough to maintain. More people meant more laundry meant more time not sailing. Crew or no crew, thats what it means.

The sensation of sailing a cat is a bit like trying to sail a tennis court. There can also be a false sense of security with a cat. You are stable and upright, until you are not.

Let me say upfront, if you want to race a boat, build a race boat. If you want to cruise, build a damn safe and fast cruising boat. Safety is about speed. Speed means you can outrun weather systems, have less exposure to crew fatigue, and less stress on the boat. When you try to build a race and a cruising boat there are all kinds of compromises that sometimes don’t work out so great.

Additional Specifications

Spars & Rigging

Lorima high modulus carbon fiber spreaderless rotating mast. Navtec canting hydraulics permit 6.5 degrees port/starboard. 800 litre stern ballast tank for blast reaching.

The two shrouds meet and then join to spectra which is connected to a ram on the aft side of the aft crossbeam. When one ram lets out, the other pulls in. To cant, the rig is either dropped before tacking, or pulled hydraulically while sailing with the press of a button on the nav pod. This same setup allows the rig to come off the boat in minutes by pulling the three large terminal pins.

Sailing Electronics

With safety being first and foremost, there is an UpSideUp system installed installed with fast dump buttons in main salon, nav desk, and each outboard winch pod.

Deepsea Challenge

James cameron.

“They came up with incredibly innovative solutions to the problems…. they sought new techniques, things that had never been done before” continued Cameron. “I owe myself, my safety in their hands and I trusted them, when they bolted the hatch closed and I descended, I knew the vehicle was right, it was well designed and well executed…I could not be prouder of this team, they made history” said Cameron.”

Clint Clemens

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the design and the build. The team at McConaghy really embraced the project during the build and really supported the boat through delivery and commissioning. The boat fulfils all my vision for the project in terms of handling and superb performance. The team definitely broughttheir composite and race boat skills to Finn.”

Shearwater 57’

Guido belgiorno-nettis, owner.

“When an owner embarks on the great journey of building their dream vessel, it’s critical to make the journey enjoyable. My wife and I had the pleasure of commissioning not one but two performance cruising yachts with McConaghy Australia. Both have exceeded our expectations.

McConaghy build beautiful, strong, light, fast and reliable boats. That was proven with our first yacht Satori– launched in 2001, so we decided to ask McConaghy to build us our second yacht ,Shearwater – a 57-foot performance cruiser. Shearwater is ALL carbon. McConaghy explored all areas to reduce weight, while allowing all the creature comforts.

I cannot oversell the pleasure we experienced building Shearwater with McConaghy. Eric and his team are quite extraordinary to work with, professional and talented – to observe what they can produce on the workshop floor was a wonder.”

I really like the look off but I know nothing about. I have googled Norman Cross and his designs seem fairly prolific. I was wondering if his have a reputation for strength and speed. I was wondering what might be considered a fast speed for this and also if they will handle rough seas pushing the boat around. I have studied the vs mutlihull question very carefully and weighed the arguments of stability vs speed carefully. Was hoping for an idea of how sought after these tris are? Thanks alll for your knowledge and input on these subjects,

races. All were well built and two of them sailed off into the Pacific. When we were doing our boat search, several of them were on our list. I can't speak for the speed as owner reports are often suspect. The 42 was heavy (solid hatches) and therefore slow. As with all multils, keep it light, and you'll go faster.

Altho it is biased in favor of the authors own designs, it outlines why a is a good boat for cruising. Norm Cross's designs are well respected, and i would buy the right one in a heartbeat.

More greg lynn trimaran.

I have to admit this unit looks so cool that I can’t stand it. What a work of art!   The green windows make no logical sense but how cool are they?

It almost like a 15 year old gamer designed it to only exist in cyberspace, unrestrained by how it will be at sea.  I can think of a dozen things that will not be right at sea, but it doesn’t matter.  It looks so cool.

All new boats are competitive when you compare them with outdated designs. .

Every thing I have mention is still on the development horizons / being developed now and rapidly developing for future designs at this present point on time.

Foils all forms – retractable with combinations not just a single design or foil they are going to give a vessel the winning edge.

A turbo charged car will on most occasions beat a non turbo charged car with the same hp rating, gear ratio aero dynamics and foils.

Remember these are very early days so things are going to get better and faster all the time!

The virtual flying technology will support the vital link between sailors and designers, creating an important feed mechanism between the two core parts for performance analysis. It will also provide an equally important data base info for the design optimisation processes.

Every time a design has a foiling boat to obtain additional data / obtained directly or shared something new will be learned that can be used to improve it, the boat, the sailors and the more that is learned / used the more it will become one of the most vital designers crew tools.

Designers for ocean racing / cruisers trimarans will one day have alliances with the specialist foiling designers, Autoclave Carbon Bonding processes facilities, tank testing data specialists, structural analysis experts, wind tunnel facilities and other experts especially if they belong to the same yacht and golf clubs. If they don’t have the data – skills – knowledge – know how – or computer programmes.

It is possible the organisations that have these tools will perhaps, to gain revenue sell the data / their services to lesser non threatening mere mortals.

Daring designs and innovation are always rewarded.

T-foil rudders have been proved hugely advantages and there is considerable more room to advance them even further.

The system of lifting surfaces clearly have been proved and the rudders have survived heavy weather and pollution debris. Races have proved the validity and the reliability re T foil Rudders sailing with rough weather and other weather conditions for entire long sailing periods.

The T-foil rudders create an unquestionable turbo effect at certain points of sail. The addition re such a system also has appeal re safety as they produce increased stability, which allows helmsman to push hard in breezy conditions without putting a vessel and crew in danger.

A quote I observed.

“:The future might be foiling for a few wealthy individuals for everyone else we will do what is practical and affordable.”

Pleased people agree the future is with foiling trimarans.

Did not get excited re the gun boat G4 except it foiled on there first test run. I can think about 10 or more reasons why I would not like to own or sail on that configuration as is. First Race it capsized.

Not every person is on a low or moderate wage and yes some can service a boat loan instead of a house loan some have other avenues and joint ownership is on the rise and has been for years. E.G four individuals or more can pool their resources for a project and others with lateral thinking can arrange sponsorship funding.

Owen do you agree FINN does not have lifting dagger boards .Has a centre board main hull only.

Do you have any performance data re FINN or race results to support your views that FINN will be competitive. All new boats are competitive when you compare them with outdated designs. .

Designers for ocean racing / cruisers trimarans will have alliances with the specialist foiling/ tank testing data specialists, structural analysis experts and other experts if they don’t have the data – skills – knowledge – know how – or computer programmes. Especially if they live at the same city and perhaps are members at the same yacht club, golf clubs.

When do you think your 26 ft and 40 ft prototypes will be launched.

I agree all cricket teams are 2nd to the Aussies when sledging, under arm bowling and sailing.

When a Tony Grainger trimaran launches with foil assist and it works we can call that design direction a success. The renders have been around for some time now with no evidence that any have been built. Ian Farrier has some foil assist trimarans out and about sailing with mixed results they are fast at times. Everything you mention has been looked at in racing boats for many years including trim tabs on daggerboards and electronic control of T rudder on the foiler Hydroptere.

If you want to be really excited you can look at the carbon Gunboat G4 racer/cruiser which has just been shown flying on uptip type lifting foils and t foil rudders. Level of relevance to most people nil except saying “that’s cool”.

The Polynesian hut/Bieker multihull uses a C foil for foil assist it’s also very light being built in carbon. The future might be foiling for a few wealthy individuals for everyone else we will do what is practical and affordable.

My name is Owen McKenzie I don’t recall you volunteering yours. I’m an Aussie and your cricket team is ok for second best.

Owen : Your surname is and your Nationality is ?

Correct most cruising / racing multihulls at present are the old designs except for the the new Cats and tris being designed with lifting foils and full foilers. You are comparing rotten apples with oranges.

The new gunboat has full lifting foils on both hulls – tony grainger new deesigns have lifting foils with foil rudders and the non lifting foil design he has allowed for with extra strength cross beams so foils can be added at a later date should the new owner wish to convert to foils. Tony’s foils also can be withdrawn for the conditions that arn’t suitable for foiling and with a trim tab center board [ main hull ] with skimming foils main hull would take care – the issues you raise re oceangoing rough seas. With the new technology foiling simulation for simulation helm foiling, can also [ the new tech ] be used in conjuction with designers to perfect their designs more accurately. Foiling Mulitihulls are the future for multihulls cruising or racing with T foil rudders There is also a design kurt has posted by another designer on this blog that kurt remarked – the cabin looked like a Polynesian hut that is showing the way.

Well Finn should be pretty competitive with most multihulls with a cruiser/racer focus it’s certainly faster than your average performance cat and would have to give all of the gunboats a run for their money. If I had a criticism of it from a cruising perspective where you would expect some niceties it’s pretty bland and unispiring. Kurt’s double shuffle hull form would give more room internally and more stowage space for bulky items than the N53 offers.

Lifting foils are kind of an incremental performance addition they aren’t useful on all points of sail or wind strengths and the lower the crafts power to weight ratio the narrower the range of conditions in which they provide useful benefit. Personally I’d only consider them on a racing multihull where the extra complexity is ok for a few extra percent of improvement in average speed. Look at the recent catana catamarans they have curved lifting daggers but it’s more like a marketing feature than a real performance benefit it’s a bit like trying to turbo a winnebago. Non lifting float daggerboards have their own issues for starters there is the weight of two daggerboards and two cases to maintain with only a small benefit to interior space in the main hull and little if any hydrodynamic benefit.

Non lifting float daggerboards have their own issues for starters there is the weight of two daggerboards and two cases to maintain with only a small benefit to interior space in the main hull and little if any hydrodynamic benefit.

No sign on the floats with dagger boards. What you thought was a dagger was a workers bag.

My wording was

So can’t see it being competitive or much interest for this design except some design concepts.

As owners we all know when we see another similar size vessel we engage to see if our boat is faster – points higher etc. and there are rallies that boat owners pace each other although one is not participating as a official race entry or first to the anchorage gets free drinks for all crew.

That means additional boats not the owner for FINN.

oceancruiser what makes you think that the N53 trimaran doesn’t have a daggerboard? It’s clearly visible in the photos you linked. I’m not sure if the owner is interested in racing he may simply have wanted a performance cruiser which could be shorthanded with adequate accommodation for his needs.

The n 53 does not have dagger boards or foils. So can’t see it being compétitive or much interest for this design except some design concepts.. Can’t find any race enteries for the named vessel FINN designed for single handed racing / cruising.

Not New. Built 2012 single handed racer.

Banuls designed n53 trimaran constructed by mcconaghy launched.

n53 trimaran

N53. From 160kW to 200kW

n53 trimaran

In this entry – once again about the desire of many: upgrade of N53B30U0 to N53B30O0. As a result of the upgrade, the power is increased from 160 kW (218 hp) to 200 kW (272 hp).

The upgrade is possible for the E series; E9X and E6X: 325i(X) and 525i(X) with N53 series engines.

323i(X) and 523i(X) can not be upgraded because they have an N53B25 engine installed with a displacement of only 2.5 liters, not 3.0 liters.

By idea, a similar upgrade is possible for F10/11; from 523i(X) and 525i(X), you can get 530i(X) with a power of 210kW.

This time a bit wider information regarding the budget solution of the E series. I write this entry because:

a. in Europe, there are huge problems with qualified specialists who know how to use the available tools (for example, BMW Explorer); this makes it difficult to perform a correct rebuilding;

b. at the same time, many charlatans (including previously mentioned “specialists”) offer the “chip tuning” of deforced N53B30U0, promising an increase of power without rebuilding.

Unfortunately, I have seen many unsuccessful results of such “tuning”, but successful results – NONE! Also, my own experience only confirms all previously mentioned.

Also, the company, based in the Netherlands, promises to upgrade the engine management in person or on remote (with a self-developed tool) disappointed. Yes, after the upgrade, the engine’s power is close to the expectations, but – the engine runs very uneven; it shivers. The diagnostics data confirm unavoidable problems. The only options to fix the situation are complete reprogramming DME as if the correct solution, or the solution, described below. The company from NL does not offer any solutions, did not return the money.

Initial information and the correct solution are described here .

So, this time – a budget solution, which is available to anyone!

What is necessary for the rebuilding?

1. three-stage intake manifold;

2. 2 pcs DISA for this current intake manifold;

3. DME and CAS with keys from the “correct” car, accordingly, from 330i or 530i.

Note: there is NO fundamental meaning; the donor car (the car on which the parts will be installed) is a sedan or universal, i or iX configuration, 3rd or 5th series. All necessary spare parts are chosen from one donor – it will be cheaper than purchasing them separately. If necessary, buy and replace DISA O ring sealings and other rubber seals because they have dried out.

Hot to do the rebuild.

1. install the inlet manifold and both DISA; connect DISA (plugs already are in the engine room);

2. install the DME and CAS from the donor.

From this moment, full power will be available.

Note: of course, in the KOMBI, many emergency signs will light up because the setups of “old” and “new” cars (with a probability of 99,9%) are different. But – you can drive the vehicle and drive with it to the specialist, who will solve this problem. Changing configuration data is a much more straightforward job than motor_hours/power_class modification (which is required in case of the correct solution).

Additional works to be performed:

1. the milage and VIN of new DME and CAS should be modified;

2. FR and FA should be modified according to the setup of the car.

Note: To solve the first problem, you should approach the persons who modify the odometer’s reading or encodes/programs BMW (on the second case – it will not be their profile). To change FR and FA, approach the persons who encode BMW; this operation is usually performed using NCS.

Kurt's double shuffle hull form would give more room internally and more stowage space for bulky items than the N53 offers.
