Yacht Dilbar: Who Is the Billionaire Owner of the Superyacht?
The 156m Lurssen superyacht Dilbar is the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage. Dilbar is worth a fortune and filled with countless luxuries, but who is the owner of the yacht, and how did they amass their fortune? Read on to find out.
Who is the owner of Yacht Dilbar?
The owner of Dilbar is Alisher Usmanov, one of Russia’s richest men. The Uzbek-born billionaire has a staggering net worth of £13.706bn. It’s with this immense fortune that he bought the 156m Dilbar in 2016 . Based on her gross tonnage of 15,917, Dilbar is estimated to have a worth of between $800 and $1bn, making her one of the highest value superyachts in the world.
How did Alisher Usmanov get rich?
Alisher Usmanov is amongst the wealthiest citizens of Russia. He stands alongside billionaires like Roman Abramovich and Vladimir Putin ( who owns a whole fleet of yachts himself ). Over the years, Usmanov has accumulated his wealth through various ventures, ranging from selling plastic bags to being an early investor in Facebook. However, his high net worth is mostly due to his involvement in the mining and investment industries. Usmanov has shown no sign of slowing down, with his worth increasing by a substantial 1.726bn between 2020-2021. Importantly he makes sure to use his money to benefit others – of everyone on the Sunday Times Rich List he is by far the most charitable, giving almost £500m in the past year alone.

Treasure Island's Bilmar resort sold
- Jennifer Rich, Times Correspondent
TREASURE ISLAND — A California hotel investment company and a Chicago real estate firm have purchased the Bilmar Beach Resort for $16.4 million.
Clearview Hotel Capital LLC of Newport Beach, Calif., and WHI Real Estate Partners of Chicago jointly purchased the beachfront resort from TI Resort LLC of Cleveland, according to the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office.
There are no immediate plans to expand the hotel or Sloppy Joe's Restaurant and Bazzie Beach Bar and Grill — part of the purchase — but amenities are being added, said Jon Kline, founder of Clearview.
Guests at the 165-room resort will have access to a beachfront water slide, beach chairs and paddleboards, Kline said. Special arrival kits for children also will be given.
"The property is in real good condition," Kline said. "We are evaluating the property before we make any decisions on capital improvements."
This is the company's first purchase in Florida. Founded in 2007, the privately held hotel investment company, with annual revenues of $200 million, owns 10 hotels in places like Hawaii, California, Louisiana and Texas.
"We love being on the beach," he said. "They aren't building any more beaches."
Clearview was one of several companies interested in the hotel, Kline said. Negotiations began last summer.
"There was a broker involved who spoke with other folks. I don't know if we were the highest offer, but we moved quickly so that was attractive to the seller," Kline said.
The current hotel management company, Forbes Hamilton Management Co. of Kissimmee, will continue day-to-day operation of the facility.
Having one operator for all three entities at the resort will provide more continuity, Kline said, and "give us opportunities to do some things, make it more efficient and seamless."
About 46 of the 165 rooms at the Bilmar are individually owned, a leftover from a previous owner's attempt to turn the hotel into condominiums. TI Resort had owned the hotel since 2000.

Back to the Beginning: A Brief History of Treasure Island and Bilmar Hotel

Share the Love
St. Petersburg’s Treasure Island had a sudden beginning—and an interesting series of events that led to its fantastical name.
It was on Saturday, September 25,1848, that an unnamed hurricane created the island by cutting a 200-yard channel to the north, now known as John’s Pass . This same storm also separated Isle of Palms and Isle of Capri from the rest of the barrier island.
According to the Treasure Island Historical Society, Thomas F. Pierce was the first landholder in Treasure Island. Pierce sold much of the land that was previously bought from the state for $1.25 per acre to Whitey Harrell. Whitey and his wife opened the first hotel with 25 guest rooms called the Coney Island.
In 1918, in a marketing scheme to increase real estate sales, several property owners secretly buried a couple of wooden chests filled with “hidden treasure” that two Coney Island guests with prior knowledge of the burial location “discovered.” Though the stunt took place on what is St. Pete Beach today, because the guests were staying at the Coney Island, word quickly spread about Treasure Island. The name stuck.
After very little development in the 1920s due to no bridge access, several developers attempted to find funds to construct a Central Avenue bridge. To secure the land on the St. Petersburg side, two developers traded the land east of the Central Avenue Causeway for 500 feet of beach front land, and to this day St. Petersburg owns 500 feet of Treasure Island Beach at 112 th Avenue. The bridge finally opened in November 1939.
In 1948 the Sands Motel became the first of the turn-of-the-century “modern” motels that are still a part of the landscape today. Shortly thereafter, Treasure Island became referred to as the “Million Dollar Mile.” The Downey family were the original owners and operators of The Sands until 2017. The new owner remains committed to upgrading the existing buildings and not redeveloping the land.
By 1955, the four separate communities of Sunset Beach, Isle of Palms, Isle of Capri, and Sunshine merged to create the City of Treasure Island. The current government style of using a City Manager reporting to the Mayor and Commissioners was not implemented until 1964 by a majority vote of the city residents. At the time, Treasure Island was considered one of the most well-planned and progressive beach communities in the state.
The changes in 1955 set the stage for what would become a community staple, the Bilmar Hotel.
Birth of the Bilmar
Russ Baltz, a resident of Grand Haven, Michigan, visited his father in St. Pete Beach and, though he enjoyed the area, he found the southern island too busy for his taste. So in 1959 he secured 550 feet of Gulf front property in the heart of Treasure Island. With some very creative funding—including five couples that were his friends and a forever “unnamed” source—the construction of the first of three phases became a reality.
With only $17 in the bank, which was actually a deposit for a future reservation, the Bilmar Beach Resort opened its doors on December 16, 1961. The resort had 64 rooms, a large swimming pool, beachfront café and soon after the Grog Shop—named after Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island , where the Pirates would gather.
With great success the Grog Shop was paying most of the bills but was still barely appeasing the “unnamed loan source.” By 1964 an additional 49 rooms were added with the construction of the four-story building which added a much-needed revenue source. Then in 1969 Baltz was able to complete the purchase of the last 150 feet of the property and begin construction of the eight-story tower.
When finished in 1971, the hotel added an additional 60 rooms, eighth floor owners apartments, 3,500-square-foot Sunset Ballroom and also became the first resort on the Gulf with two swimming pools.
The name of the Bilmar was actually used before the resort in Treasure Island was developed. In 1947, Baltz had converted an old dance hall to a small motel and entertainment complex on Lake Michigan and named it Bilmar after his son Bill and Daughter Margot. Later, Bill graduated from Cornell School of Hospitality and took over management of the Bilmar Beach Resort.
After 39 years of ownership, in 2000 the Baltz family made the heartfelt decision to sell the Bilmar. On a handshake deal to not demolish the buildings and build condominiums, a Cleveland-based apartment management company bought the Bilmar. Using an Orlando management company, the new owner set out to bring the Bilmar up to the new standards expected in the new millennium.
The first major statement they made was the painting of the three buildings to the bright yellow color that became known around the world when people thought of Treasure Island. Also, terribly in need of major renovation, they decided to demo the old Sunset Ballroom and Grog Shop. They flip-flopped the concepts by adding Sloppy Joe’s on the Beach in the former ballroom location and building a new modern ballroom where the former Grog Shop had been.
Two years later, a much more aggressive renovation began with the complete remodeling of all 167 guest rooms. This included taking the rooms down to the studs and rebuilding with two guest room themes: Island Breeze, in heavy brown and tropical green décor, and Sea Side Cottage with white furnishings, brightly colored blues and tropical colors. It was truly a new era for the Bilmar Beach Resort.
During this renovation, the Bilmar became a Condo-Hotel. Sales were brisk in fall of 2005 and 2006, but the national housing crisis quickly slowed the sales. Today only 43 of the 167 rooms are privately owned and only one of those are not in the Bilmar’s Rental Program. Despite the weakened economy, the Bilmar saw record growth of revenues over the next several years. Property improvements continued with the support of the Condominium Association and resort management.
A New Era Begins
In 2014, the Cleveland ownership decided to put the Bilmar up for sale as its apartment building business was expanding and a full-service resort did not fit into their portfolio. Several companies were interested in purchasing the Bilmar with its resort amenities, proven wedding and meetings market, and successful Sloppy Joe’s operations. After months of discussions, California-based Clearview Hotel Capital became the new owners of the landmark resort. Traditionally, it co-owned large nationally flagged properties throughout the country; this was a somewhat new venture to add an independent hotel to its collection. The team of hotel experts quickly identified the area needing immediate enhancements .Many back of the house improvements were done, as well as the complete remodeling of the main lobby area and Beach Front Café. Additional amenities were added including kayak, paddleboarding, beachfront fire pits, bicycles, a four-person surrey bike and more.
The ownership created their own management company, Dolphin Hotel Management, in 2016 and the Bilmar was the first property in the portfolio. Months later they added two Marriott properties in Old Town San Diego, a 600-room Holiday Inn Express in Waikiki on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, and most recently the historic River Street Inn in Savannah, Georgia.
“Noting the growth of tourism and increased development in Pinellas County, we realized the time had come to start a new chapter of success at the Bilmar Beach Resort,” says Bilmar General Manager Clyde Smith.
Working with Chicago’s Getty’s Group for the guest rooms and New Jersey KKAD Architecture & Design, plans were made to bring an upscale “beach chic” look to the Bilmar. Features included expanding the bathrooms in most rooms, installing backlit mirrors, replacing all tubs and adding 30 walk-in showers to meet a growing request. Bright, fun color schemes in the furniture and drapery selections added to the “Instagram moment” the designers were seeking.
The exterior renovations included removing architecture features that dated the building, the addition of vertical wood-looking Dryvit panels, and finally the changing of the famous yellow color to dove gray and alternating Caribbean cool blues to complete the transformation.
Although the threat of Hurricane Irma delayed the start date, the contractors and team were able to complete the project in January 2018.
“Since then, our many repeat guests have given us two thumbs up for once again bringing the look and feel of the Bilmar to a modern resort experience,” Smith says. “Maintaining a successful resort takes more than regular renovations and good funding by commitment owners. It takes a team of hospitality professionals to deliver the services today’s sophisticated travelers expect.”
Smith says the Bilmar team is proud to have put together a group of employees that are fully committed to delivering outstanding guest service to each and every guest and restaurant patron that comes to the Bilmar Hotel. “Supported by an experienced group of managers with over 250 years of hospitality experience we know it is the people that made the difference.”
The Bilmar continues to be a popular destination hotel for visitors and locals alike, with its central location on the beach and easily accessible by Central Avenue, a straight shot seven miles from Downtown St. Pete. But perhaps the hotel is best known as a hotspot for the many diverse activities that take place at John’s Pass.
“We are proud of our team and thankful for the support we receive from Dolphin Hotels and the entire Tampa Bay community that makes our destination what it is,” Smith says. “It is our goal to keep the Bilmar the number one resort to get away and get it all.”

10 of the most impressive superyachts owned by billionaires
From a sailing yacht owned by a russian billionaire industrialist to the luxury launch of the patek philippe ceo, here are the best billionaire-owned boats on the water….
Words: Jonathan Wells
There’s something about billionaires and big boats . Whether they’re superyachts or megayachts, men with money love to splash out on these sizeable sea-going giants. And that all began in 1954 — with the big dreams of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.
Onassis, keen to keep his luxury lifestyle afloat when at sea, bought Canadian anti-submarine frigate HMCS Stormont after World War II. He spent millions turning it into an opulent super yacht, named it after his daughter — and the Christina O kicked off a trend among tycoons. To this day, the world’s richest men remain locked in an arms race to build the biggest, fastest, most impressive superyacht of all. Here are 10 of our favourites…
Eclipse, owned by Roman Abramovich
Built by: Blohm+Voss of Hamburg, with interiors and exteriors designed by Terence Disdale. Launched in 2009, it cost $500 million (the equivalent of £623 million today).
Owned by: Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the owner of private investment company Millhouse LLC and owner of Chelsea Football Club. His current net worth is $17.4 billion.
Key features: 162.5 metres in length / 9 decks / Top speed of 22 knots / Two swimming pools / Disco hall / Mini submarine / 2 helicopter pads / 24 guest cabins
Sailing Yacht A, owned by Andrey Melnichenko
Built by: Nobiskrug, a shipyard on the Eider River in Germany. The original idea came from Jacques Garcia, with interiors designed by Philippe Starck and a reported price tag of over $400 million.
Owned by: Russian billionaire industrialist Andrey Melnichenko, the main beneficiary of both the fertiliser producing EuroChem Group and the coal energy company SUEK. Though his current net worth is $18.7 billion, Sailing Yacht A was seized in Trieste on 12 March 2022 due to the EU’s sanctions on Russian businessmen.
Key features: 119 metres in length / 8 decks / Top speed of 21 knots / Freestanding carbon-fibre rotating masts / Underwater observation pod / 14 guests
Symphony, owned by Bernard Arnault
Built by: Feadship, the fabled shipyard headquartered in Haarlem in The Netherlands. With an exterior designed by Tim Heywood, it reportedly cost around $150 million to construct.
Owned by: French billionaire businessman and art collector Bernard Arnault. Chairman and chief executive of LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods company, his current net worth is $145.8 billion.
Key features: 101.5 metres in length / 6 decks / Top speed of 22 knots / 6-metre glass-bottom swimming pool / Outdoor cinema / Sundeck Jacuzzi / 8 guest cabins
Faith, owned by Michael Latifi
Built by: Similarly to Symphony above, also Feadship. With exteriors designed by Beaulieu-based RWD, and interiors by Chahan Design, it cost a reported $200 million to construct in 2017.
Owned by: Until recently, Canadian billionaire and part-owner of the Aston Martin Formula 1 Team , Lawrence Stroll. Recently sold to Michael Latifi, father of F1 star Nicholas , a fellow Canadian businessman with a net worth of just under $2 billion.
Key features: 97 metres in length / 9 guest cabins / Glass-bottom swimming pool — with bar / Bell 429 helicopter
Amevi, owned by Lakshmi Mittal
Built by: The Oceanco shipyard, also in The Netherlands. With exterior design by Nuvolari & Lenard and interior design by Alberto Pinto, it launched in 2007 (and cost around $125 million to construct).
Owned by: Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, chairman and CEO of Arcelor Mittal, the world’s largest steelmaking company. He owns 20% of Queen Park Rangers, and has a net worth of $18 billion.
Key features: 80 metres in length / 6 decks / Top speed of 18.5 knots / On-deck Jacuzzi / Helipad / Swimming Pool / Tender Garage / 8 guest cabins
Odessa II, owned by Len Blavatnik
Built by: Nobiskrug, the same German shipyard that built Sailing Yacht A . Both interior and exterior were created by Focus Yacht Design, and the yacht was launched in 2013 with a cost of $80 million.
Owned by: British businessman Sir Leonard Blavatnik. Founder of Access Industries — a multinational industrial group with current holdings in Warner Music Group, Spotify and the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat — he is worth $39.9 billion.

The luxury boats owned by some of the wealthiest people in tech, from a yacht so big it has its own support boat to superyachts with swimming pools and basketball courts
- Many billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson enjoy spending their time on luxurious yachts.
- The boats are decked out with amenities that many Americans can only dream of.
- Here are some of the billionaires in tech who own private yachts.
A regular Jane celebrating a personal renaissance after a long-term relationship might commemorate the new era with an ankle tattoo of a spiritual saying. When you're a billionaire, you could do it instead with a $500 million megayacht .
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made waves in May riding around the roughly 127-meter "Koru," a Māori term that may signify a fresh start, with his reported fiancée Lauren Sanchez. (In 2019, Bezos finalized his divorce from MacKenzie Scott, whom he was married to for 25 years).
Beyond the private planes occupying the hangars of billionaires, yachts have come to symbolize the highly private sites of leisure and networking reserved for the ultra-wealthy .
Tech billionaires like Bezos, Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have all purchased their own mini vacation hubs at sea, decking their boats with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.
For those wishing to experience life aboard these multi-million-dollar yachts, some are available to rent out for a few nights or weeks at a time. Late Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's yacht can be booked for $2.2 million per week or more, according Bloomberg .
Chartering yachts owned by billionaires like Alphabet cofounder Sergey Brin has previously cost customers anywhere from $773,000 a week to $1.2 million .
It remains to be seen how these vessels will fare against the apparent Orca uprising.
Take a look at some of the yachts that have been owned by tech billionaires.
A mystery buyer bought a 414-foot superyacht that was once owned by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for $278 million. Allen had the boat, which was named "Octopus," built in 2003 for $200 million. Since the tech billionaire's death in 2018, the boat had been listed for as much as $325 million.

The wealthy can book the yacht for a weekly rate of $2.2 million or more, through the luxury company Camper & Nicholsons, Bloomberg reported last year.

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the roughly 127-meter "Koru," sparked attention in May for its artistic decor. A sculpture of a woman on the boat appeared to observers to be the likeness of Bezos' reported fiancée Sanchez, who was also seen that month on the yacht sporting a large ring.

Even before its completion, "Koru" drew the ire of Dutch people vowing to hurl eggs at the boat if it would require a historic bridge in Rotterdam to be taken apart to let it through. An egg crisis was averted however, as the company making the ship found a less-irksome alternative.

Bezos has long been interested in yachts. In 2019, he was spotted aboard entertainment mogul David Geffen's superyacht.
Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison owns a 288-foot yacht named Musashi that he acquired in 2013. The yacht has several amenities, including an elevator, swimming pool, movie theater, and both an indoor and outdoor gym.

Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun.

The Oracle cofounder also has a knack for competitive yacht racing, and helped to found and back a racing team, called Oracle Team USA, in 2000. The team has found success and won several prestigious titles over the years.

Ellison previously owned a bigger, 454-foot yacht called Rising Sun, which was designed specifically for the CEO in 2005. That yacht reportedly has 82 rooms, a movie theater, a wine cellar, and a basketball court. However, Ellison sold off the Rising Sun to Geffen for a reported $300 million.

Ellison's boat, Musashi, is a sister ship to the yacht of another billionaire, former Sears CEO Eddie Lampert. However, the yacht, named Fountainhead, is often mistaken for belonging to billionaire investor Mark Cuban. "The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it's mine," Cuban told Page Six in 2016. "It's so crazy ... I don't even own a boat."

Ellison's yacht reportedly influenced the decision of late Apple CEO Steve Jobs to get a boat himself. However, Jobs never set foot on the boat — the yacht was commissioned in 2008, but wasn't completed until 2012, a year after his death.

When Jobs died in 2011, his yacht — along with his $14.1 billion fortune — was inherited by his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, founder and president of a social-impact nonprofit called the Emerson Collective. The 256-foot yacht is named Venus, and is worth $130 million.
Google's billionaire cofounders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are known to splurge. An Insider feature in December documented some of the trappings of their luxury, including planes and yachts.
Source: Insider .
Page owned a yacht named Senses, a $45 million, 194-foot boat that he bought in 2011 from a New Zealand businessman. He's since sold the yacht, Insider reported in 2021, a vessel that had a private beach club with a Jacuzzi and sun beds, both indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a helicopter pad. It's unclear what other sea vessels he owns, though Insider has previously reported he might have another yacht.

Brin meanwhile owns a number of yachts and vessels including the 73-meter Dragonfly, and the 40-meter Butterfly, Insider reported in January.
Dragonfly, the $80 million boat that has a movie-theater, shares a name with Google's once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Google said in 2019 it had officially terminated the project.

The former Google CEO picked up the Alfa Nero yacht for nearly $68 million in an auction in June, according to a Bloomberg report. The yacht had apparently been left amid Russia's war in Ukraine, according to the report.

For Skype cofounder Niklas Zennstrom, his interest in yachts skews toward racing and competitive sailing. Zennstrom has gone through a succession of boats all named Ran.
Source: CNN
The Ran VII yacht is among the most advanced of Zennstrom's boats. The racing yacht uses electrical power, which Zennstrom has said makes it "lighter, less drag, quieter, and most importantly it is environmentally friendly."
The 40-foot yacht has been meant to compete in regattas through the racing team owned by Zennstrom and his wife, Catherine. The Ran racing team launched in 2008, and has won some prestigious regattas.
Barry Diller, chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns a $70 million yacht with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.
The sailing yacht, named Eos, is 350 feet long with six bedrooms. The power couple has hosted many celebrities over the years — a few that have been spotted aboard Eos include model Karlie Kloss, actor Bradley Cooper, journalist Anderson Cooper, and singer Harry Styles.

For Jim Clark, the cofounder of Netscape, one yacht hasn't been enough. Clark has owned boats for more than 30 years, and in 2012, he put up two of his sailing yachts for sale.
Clark listed the boats for a combined $113 million: the 136-foot Hanuman for $18 million, and the 295-foot Athena for $95 million. However, Clark has yet to offload Athena. Clark also previously owned a 155-foot yacht named Hyperion, and currently also owns a sloop called Hanuman.

Charles Simonyi worked at Microsoft until 2002, and oversaw the creation of Microsoft Office software. A few years before he left, Simonyi decided to purchase a yacht. He told the designer that wanted his yacht to be "home away from [his] home in Seattle."
Source: Boat International
The product of that conversation in 1999 is Simonyi's yacht named Skat, meaning "treasure" in Danish. The yacht measures 233 feet long, and is unique with its nontraditional design and gray color. Skat features a matching gray helicopter, a gym, and motorcycles.

Opulent British billionaire Richard Branson owned a yacht until he sold it in September 2018. The 105-foot catamaran sold for $3 million, significantly lower than the $9.6 million price Branson listed the boat for in 2014.
Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, bought the boat in 2009. He named it Necker Belle, a nod to his private Caribbean island, Necker Island.

Two massive super-yachts appeared in the Santa Barbara Channel last Thursday, drawing awe and questions from beachgoers and residents.
According to Harbormaster Mike Wiltshire, the two offshore vessels are the Lonian — a 285-foot super-yacht built by Feadship of Florida and the Netherlands — and the Hodor , its 216-foot companion ship. Both are owned by billionaire Lorenzo Fertitta, former CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
The Lonian was purchased for $160 million in 2018 and can hold up to 12 guests and 27 crew members, including the captain. According to superyachttimes.com , the ship is ranked as the 117th largest super-yacht in the world, and its sister ship, the Hodor serves as a trailing garage, housing the “toys,” which include ATVs, motorcycles, and a helicopter; the ship has its very own helicopter pad.
The ships have led to a number of calls to the Harbor Patrol from Santa Barbara residents, some of whom wondered if the Hodor ’s helipad indicated a military ship.

Wiltshire said the ships’ captains and crew contacted the Waterfront Department on the evening of Thursday, August 26.
“We provided them with anchor coordinates at that time,” he said. “They have not indicated how long they will be here.”
The two ships were anchored off of Newport Beach a couple of days before their trip to Santa Barbara. Wiltshire said that boats anchoring off the Santa Barbara coast is not unusual, as the department frequently sees large ships requesting to stop by the channel.
“Nothing overly out of the ordinary as we occasionally provide anchor coordinates for vessels too large to moor in the harbor, and they typically shuttle into port using tender boats,” Wiltshire said.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.
The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.
Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.
Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.
The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.
No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.
Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye
When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.
Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.
For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.
Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.
In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.
For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.
This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.
Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.
For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.
Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.
These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.
Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.
From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.
Final Thoughts
Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.
From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.
With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

9 Stars Who Own Ultraluxurious Yachts
By Rachel Davies
Luxury doesn’t stop once you leave the land, or even at private jets. Behold the celebrity yacht, something the most opulent individuals keep on hand so they can extravagantly take to the seas at a moment’s notice. Some, like Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck or Kylie Jenner , merely charter yachts for a few weeks a year, but others, with a true commitment to the nautical lifestyle, pony up the millions it costs to buy and maintain a massive boat year after year. Below, we detail some of the best and biggest celebrity yachts (and the parties that take place aboard!).
Giorgio Armani
“I want this boat for the rest of my life, or for what remains of it,” Giorgio Armani told British Vogue during their visit to the yacht he meticulously designed himself, known as the Maín . The perfectly polished all black boat, complete with tinted windows throughout, is an impressive antidote to the sea of entirely white yachts at most docks. His previous boat, the Mariù , was equally as stylish, and he welcomed AD aboard in 2003.
Diane von Furstenberg
Eos , the yacht of Diane von Furstenberg and her husband Barry Diller, is said to be one of the largest in the world . The couple clearly takes advantage of all that room—just take the well documented trip to Tahiti they took with Anderson Cooper, Alison Williams, Bradley Cooper, Irina Shayk, and Andy Cohen, among others, as proof.
It’s no surprise that multibillionaire Jeff Bezos has a yacht of his own. The Amazon founder’s $500 million boat is on track to be ready this June, years after he commissioned it in 2018 . Bezos has recently faced backlash for requesting that a bridge in Rotterdam, Netherlands, be dismantled so his massive yacht can pass through the town later this year.
Andrea Bocelli
The lavish lifestyle of opera star Andrea Bocelli wouldn’t be complete without a yacht. The star singer has owned eight different vessels over the last two decades, and in 2018 he replaced his 72-foot Gamma 22 Libertas with an 86-foot-long Darwin 86 called the Stella del Nord .
Tiger Woods
The Privacy.
According to Golf , Tiger Woods’s yacht Privacy is something of a second home to the athlete, who sleeps on board when he’s away from home at major championship tournaments. Nine other guests could easily sleep on the boat, and enjoy the jacuzzi, wet bar, and decompression chamber.
Just six months after buying a $2 million mini yacht, the Wajer 55s, Tom Brady spent $6 million on the Wajer 77, with a sleeping capacity of nine, more than double the first boat’s capacity. “I think the 77 will be a little more suited for what we need it for down here, which is a few more day trips and weekend trips,” Brady said in a video announcing the Wajer 77. “We spend a lot of time in the Bahamas, so going from the east coast of Florida across into the Bahamas and around the Bahamas would be really great trips for us as a family.”
David Geffen
The Rising Sun.
By Katherine McLaughlin
By Katie Schultz
By Amelia Mularz
Billionaire movie and music produce r David Geffen’s $590 million yacht, the Rising Sun , easily trumps Jeff Bezos’s and the parties Geffen’s thrown onboard rival those that Diane von Fursternberg has hosted. The Obamas, Steven Spielberg, JJ Abrams, Oprah , and Julia Roberts are among the many big names who’ve rode on the Rising Sun , which reportedly counts a double-height cinema and basketball court among its list of luxurious amenities.
Tommy Hilfiger
The Wajer 77.
Appropriate for the designer known for his love of red, white, and blue, Tommy Hilfiger’s yacht is named the Flag . Hilfiger has owned the boat which he calls his “most prized possession” for five years now, and over that time, he’s added his Americana-inspired touch to the classy interiors that were designed by Chahan Minassian.
Valentino Garavani
The TM Blue One .
Fashion maven Valentino Garavani has owned his yacht, TM Blue One, since 1988, and yet it still remains an essential hot spot for his family and celebrity pals. The yacht is named for his parents, Teresa and Mauro, and was designed by Peter Marino, the architect who designed his New York apartment, too. Though the pastime du jour is unknown, it’s said that all guests were encouraged to take up needlepoint while on board back in the 90s.

Superyacht Turquoise – how a top hotelier transformed his 55.4m into a charter success
For owners and designers, the space between the personal and the coldly impersonal is wide and uncertain, but the most successful find a decorative approach that makes a charter yacht feel like an ultra-luxury home-on-sea – and not someone else’s. When the owner of the 55.4 metre superyacht Turquoise bought the 2011-built boat in December last year, the interior was in good nick, but, as one yacht designer put it, “extremely plain”. Comments from charter guests backed this up. “A bit ordinary,” was the general consensus, not the kind of feedback any self-respecting superyacht owner wants to be hearing about his pride and joy, especially when it’s up for hire in an ever more competitive luxury charter yacht market. Turquoise ’s Captain Ben Craig-Cameron recalls diplomatically that while the boat had the bones of a great charter yacht, the interior was “definitely not to the owner’s taste”. “But,” he adds, “I think he saw an opportunity.”
The refit plan followed an interior design concept that improved the use of rooms and deck space, creating a more glamorous, yet thoroughly accommodating atmosphere. An outdoor cinema was installed, furniture was repositioned in the saloons to create more intimacy and wonderful dining spaces were created on each deck. “Every good superyacht revolves around eating and drinking,” says the owner. “To this end we built a strong kitchen team and ensured that dining could take place across all three decks. Theatre has been created with the different sets of glassware and crockery and the interiors team try to make each meal on board a memorable experience.”
Inspiration
Having owned luxury hotels and chartered widely, including a 56-metre Perini Navi, the owner had the experience and skills to revamp Turquoise into a top-notch charter boat. “I had experienced time on the original Turquoise (now Double Trouble) and had chartered a sistership to Turquoise , Talisman Maiton (ex- Talisman ). I liked the exterior look of the yacht and the layout. The Ed Dubois naval pedigree added weight. She was also extremely quiet and fuel efficient.” The brief was for “seven star service” – enhancing the attractive outdoor spaces and creating a warm and comfortable interior that would work for families as well. “Timeless elegance so that the yacht would not date overnight,” says the owner.
Construction
Steel-hulled with an aluminium superstructure, Turquoise was built in 2011 by Proteksan Turquoise in Turkey, 17 years after the first Turquoise was launched for the same client. She was designed by Ed Dubois and had the bones of a great charter yacht with a functional, service-oriented layout. The basic structure was kept, but the treatment changed. In the main saloon, for example, a storage unit by the aft doors grew into an art deco-influenced bar, while further forward an arrangement of coffee tables and footstools created greater intimacy, as well as a visual treat.
Exterior styling
With her long, sharp bow and extravagantly swept back radar arch, she perhaps gives the impression of boasting a higher top speed than the 17 knots she’ll do flat out. Turquoise ’s external looks are a mix of the purposeful and the luxurious, the working deck space at the bow giving way amidships to acres of private deck space over three levels. An al fresco beach club is found on the top deck, enclosed by solid bulwarks for privacy. The original owner specified a large lazarette that was kept free of tenders and toys, reserved for only diving equipment. Refitted with charter in mind, it is now stuffed with water toys.
Interior design
“It’s a modern interpretation of art deco,” says Jonny Horsfield of H2 Yacht Design, the British design firm that was brought in to reimagine the on board lifestyle. “We wanted to introduce a lot more contrast, so you have dark macassar wood in high-gloss varnish – really rich and sexy – and stainless steel, which highlights it. There are beiges, whites and greys and only little bits of colour here and there, for example in the main saloon with that petrol blue.” Velvet is used in main saloon upholstery, while suede treated to mimic shagreen covers walls in the owner’s suite. Cream leather panels and mirrors are common throughout, creating a feeling of richness and depth. In terms of layout, a small but important feature is the existence of a main deck VIP suite, guarding against the possibility of any unsightly squabble over the master cabin by the two primary charterers.
Outdoor living
The exterior decks have also been reconfigured. The sun deck, which was laid out for sunbathing alone with a large spa pool and sunpads, now features a stylish bar, barbecue and dining area, becoming a far more accommodating place to while away the afternoon at anchor. Snazzy touches include the light colour scheme and the bronze splashes in the glass bar top that shimmer in the sun – typical of the level of detail and thought to be found throughout this redesign.
Engineering and performance
Captain Ben Craig-Cameron joins the owner in complimenting Turquoise on her quietness and fuel economy. “We can be doing 15 knots, and burning 290 litres an hour, whereas with previous yachts I’ve been on, we’ve been doing 14 to 12 knots, burning about 800 litres an hour,” he says. Craig-Cameron also praises the engine room and wheelhouse layout.
