The MYS: the place to Sea

Created in 1991 by French entrepreneur Maurice Cohen, the MYS displays around one hundred unique and exceptional superyachts constructed by the world’s foremost shipbuilders. Along the docks where these prestigious vessels are moored, visitors will find a host of companies, shipbrokers, and other important yachting industry stakeholders.

The Monaco Yacht Show is globally renowned for the exceptional quality and impressive size of its superyachts. Of the hundred or so on display every year, around forty are being unveiled for the first time in their worldwide debut. The average length of the vessels is 50 metres, with some mega yachts exceeding 100 metres.

In recent years, the MYS has expanded its offering to include ultra-high end markets intrinsically linked to the exclusive world of superyachting, featuring luxury goods, cars and motorcycles, helicopters, and private jet constructors, amid the glitz and glamour of the Principality of Monaco.

Not to be missed...

The 33rd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show is certainly not one to be missed, keep your eyes peeled for updates on the Superyachts.com website.

Yacht tragedy: Horrifying reality of being sucked into 'black swan' waterspout as bodies found

It is believed the Bayesian superyacht was struck by a waterspout while it was anchored off the coast of Italy in the early hours of Monday, causing it to capsize and killing several onboard

The Bayesian yacht sank off the coast of Palermo

  • 16:05, 21 Aug 2024

Witnesses reported seeing a terrifying tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian superyacht at sea before it went down.

The 56-metre luxury yacht, carrying 22 people, sank off the coast of Italy during a violent storm in the early hours of Monday morning. Fifteen people were initially rescued and one person, chef Recaldo Thomas, tragically died . Six passengers remained missing until two bodies were pulled from the water today. Their identities have not yet been revealed.

Italian emergency services continue to look for those who have not been accounted for as the sunken vessel sits fully intact on its side around 165ft underwater. It plunged to the bottom of the ocean within a matter of minutes while another, smaller boat that was just 100m away remained intact.

Questions have emerged about how the boat capsized with attention on sea tornados, known as waterspouts. But what are they and what happens when you get sucked into one?

Talking to The Times , marine experts told how the horrifying event - dubbed a 'black swan' on account of its rarity - would have battered the £14million boat.

Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said: "Looking at the extreme weather , if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event. And if the waterspout ends up dumping a load of that water on board the vessel, that’s going to cause significant damage."

A fisherman in Porticello, near Palermo, said, through a translator, that he saw a "tornado" on Monday morning, and a flare in the sky - typically used as a distress signal - moments later. But James Catfield, who captained the boat, said: "We didn't see it coming."

Tornadic waterspouts, which develop downward in a thunderstorm, can either form over water or move from land to water and have the same characteristics as a land tornado, according to the US National Ocean Service. Many storms have swept through Italy in recent days, with floods and landslides causing severe damage in the north of the country after weeks of scorching heat.

The Bayesian was fitted with a 75-metre mast, the world 's second-tallest, which would have made the vessel particularly vulnerable to getting caught up in a waterspout. Intense waterspouts, which are rare, can cause boats severe damage or even to capsize.

Dr Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, explained: "The majority of waterspouts are quite weak, resulting in a short burst of gusty winds, which although momentarily quite strong cause little damage because they are over the sea.

"But at the more intense end of the scale, winds of above 100kmh are possible, although actual wind measurements from inside waterspouts are very rare indeed. Winds of this strength coinciding with the location of a boat are capable of causing damage or capsize, especially because the wind direction varies very rapidly within a waterspout which could cause a boat to rock violently."

The meteorologist also said: "The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn."

Waterspouts are often accompanied by high winds, large hail and lightning, so being inside one would feel dark and dangerous. The movement of a waterspout is very similar to a land tornado, that lifts and drops objects with force.

Dr Jian-Guo Li, a senior modelling scientist for the Met Office , said: "You may have seen many American tornado reports, which showed how cars and house roofs are sucked into the air and scattered around like toys. When it forms over the water surface, it pumps the water into the air, resulting in the waterspouts. When a boat or yacht happened to be in its centre, it could be lifted and dropped aside."

Its offerings of 700 vessels from 16 to 165 feet includes many global debuts, from sailing vessels to motoryachts, to multihulls and a dozen other boat types. The show has about 4 miles of dock space.

While Cannes doesn’t have the superyacht glitz of the Monaco Yacht Show, its fleet continues to grow each year, both by units and hull lengths. Its two locations, Vieux Port and Port Canto, have very different fleets. Located in the heart of the city along the famed Croisette, Vieux Port is one of the oldest ports on the Côte d’Azur and home to the largest motoryachts and superyachts at the show. This year will also see Port Canto, the smaller exhibition area usually reserved for sailing yachts, dedicate space to motorboats with lengths of 43 feet and under.

Headliners this year will include the 148-foot Tankoa Go , the 114-foot compact explorer Fox from Pendennis, Otam’s 90-foot Sexy Me , and two new models from Azimut’s Seadeck Series of low emission yachts, the Seadeck 6 and 7.

Here are 12 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Pendennis ‘Fox’

yacht event monaco

The recently delivered, 114-foot Fox is an explorer yacht named after Falmouth-born, 19th-century scientist Robert Were Fox the Younger, who invented the compass that guided the first expedition to the South Pole. Built by Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, U.K., the yacht marries a muscular, military-style exterior with bright and modern beach-house interiors. It sleeps 10 guests in five suites, including a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck.

The second hull in Columbus Yachts’s 141-foot Atlantique 43 series, Frette features Frette Bespoke linens—the Italian luxury brand the yacht is named after. The exterior and interior are designed by Hot Lab, with naval architecture by Hydro Tec. The yacht is defined by its large outdoor areas. A highlight is the 16-square-foot pool at the stern positioned about two feet above the waterline. Guest accommodations on Frette ‘s lower deck include five double cabins, three twins, and two VIPs that can convert into one large VIP suite.

OTAM ‘Sexy Me’

yacht event monaco

Otam’s new flagship yacht, the Otam 90 GTS Sexy Me , will make its world debut at Cannes following successful sea trials where the 92-footer hit blistering speeds of 45 knots—three knots faster than its contracted top speed. The power comes from a pair of 2,600 hp MTU engines and Arneson surface-drive propellers. Fittingly, the yacht’s helm console is inspired by racing cars with a carbon-fiber structure that resembles the protective “halo” system used by Formula 1 cars. The air intakes on the front of the yacht and “snorkel” on the hardtop purposely resemble the hood and roof scoops on luxury supercars.

60 Sunreef Power Eco

yacht event monaco

The 60 Sunreef Power Eco is the smallest model in its solar catamaran range. Launched under the Sunreef Yachts Eco flag, the 60-footer relies on engineered solar panels developed in-house by the Polish builder. The photovoltaic technology uses efficient, shock-resistant, flexible, and ultra-thin solar panels integrated in the yacht’s composite structure, including the hull, mast, superstructure, bow terrace, and bimini roof. Key features include a customizable semi-open salon, a large bow terrace and flybridge with a spa pool, a bar, a dining area, and sunpads. It may be 60 feet long, but its interior volume equals a yacht 20 feet longer.

Azimut Seadeck 6

yacht event monaco

The 58-foot Seadeck 6 is the debut model from Azimut’s Seadeck Series of low emission yachts. According to Azimut, owners can save as reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by as much as 40 percent. The savings come from a lightened carbon-fiber superstructure, a hybrid propulsion system and an optimized hull that is wider at the stern and streamlined at the bow. According Azimut, the hull shape allows the yacht to plane sooner, reducing drag at lower speeds. Azimut’s 72-foot sistership Seadeck 7 will also be at Cannes, where it will make its world debut.

Custom Line ‘Sodan’

yacht event monaco

Ferretti’s 126-foot Sodan , the eighth hull in the popular Custom Line 120 series, will be shown at Cannes this year by Burgess Yachts. Its raised pilothouse is a key feature of Francesco Paszkowski Design’s sporty exterior. The studio is also responsible for the interior, which has a functional layout and large social areas. Five well-appointed guest cabins include a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck with a private owner’s lounge.

Tankoa Yachts ‘Go’

yacht event monaco

Tankoa is launching Go at Cannes, the first of its T450 series. The 148-footer may be the largest new yacht at the show, but it’s the first vessel under 164 feet built by the Italian yard. Go , with its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, was developed in partnership with Cassetta Yacht Design & Architecture. It’s built for an American client who increased the gross tonnage from 430GT to 450GT to allow for greater interior volume, including a large owner’s suite forward on the main deck and five lower deck guest cabins. The beach club at the stern has opening sides when at anchor and a pool. “ Go is a great addition to the Tankoa core fleet. It is an incredibly flexible platform on which we can create semi-custom yachts, offering big volumes without compromising on the sleek and elegant lines,” said Claudio Corvino, Tankoa’s sales and business development danager for the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

WiderCat ‘Acali’

yacht event monaco

Wider Centro Stile and Luca Dini Design penned the first hull in the WiderCat 92 serie s . Acali is a roomy catamaran, featuring the builder’s serial hybrid-propulsion system. The main deck is dedicated to the owner’s suite, with a private foredeck lounge that occupies almost half of the interior space on that level. Two VIP cabins and two twin guest cabins are located on the lower deck. The tender garage has a dropdown transom hatch that turns into a swim platform when lowered. On the upper deck is an additional forward cockpit, sky lounge, and helm station.

Omikron OT-60

yacht event monaco

The OT-60 is the debut model for Omikron Yachts, a new subsidiary brand owned by Greek shipbuilder Olympic Marine. The Cannes Yachting Festival marks the world premiere of the series, which has six hulls that have been completed or are in build. The interior and exterior configurations are designed by Lorenzo Argento, with naval architecture by Juan Kouyoumdjian. The interiors are styled by Ciarmoli Queda Studio, featuring natural materials, neutral colors, and tactile finishes.

Silent 62 Tri-Deck

yacht event monaco

Optimized for outdoor living and warm climate sailing, Silent Yacht’s 62 3-Deck , full-electric catamaran promises quiet, emissions-free cruising. Powered by the builder’s signature solar technology, the 62-footer has transoceanic range when cruising at eight knots. A signature design is the large flybridge entertaining space, with dining and lounging areas. It’s matched with a bright main deck salon with large windows, an open galley, and a dining area. The customizable third deck is available in three versions: an open sky lounge, a closed sky lounge, or an owner’s suite.

Sirena 48 Hybrid

yacht event monaco

This Sirena 48 is the Turkish builder’s first hybrid offering of its series. It’s powered by a serial hybrid powertrain driven by twin 213kW electric motors. When cruising at 14 knots in electric mode, it has a range of 30 nautical miles. Other changes to the regular Sirena 48 include a sleek coupe-style coach roof with glass and solar panels for a sportier look. Replacing the previous open-air flybridge, it allows natural light into the main salon while reducing weight to improve the yacht’s performance and range in pure-electric mode.

Mike Lynch yacht sinking: 4 bodies found inside Bayesian boat that sank off Sicily, 2 more remain

Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found four bodies Wednesday, as the search continued for two more missing passengers and questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly.

Divers and rescue crews unloaded two body bags from the rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two other bodies had also been found Wednesday in the wreckage for a total of four.

The discovery indicated that the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater was a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and no signs of life had emerged over three days of searching, maritime experts said.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday — that of the ship’s Antigua-born chef, Recaldo Thomas.

Six people remained unaccounted for, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent US federal fraud trial.

Investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office, meanwhile, were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified.

Questions abound about what caused the superyacht, which was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the 15 survivors.

Was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat such as the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports?

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

Yachts such as the Bayesian are also required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

“So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said.

Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers, meanwhile, continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the depth of the wreck — which is far deeper than most recreational divers are certified for and at a depth that requires special precautions — divers working in tag teams can only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching.

The limited dive time is designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggests the managers of the operation are trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.

What might have caused Sicily yacht to sink

yacht event monaco

Specialist divers continue to search for the remaining people who were on board a luxury superyacht which capsized off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning - but questions have been asked about why the vessel sank.

According to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder, the boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor".

It is believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water - otherwise known as a waterspout - causing Bayesian to capsize.

Waterspouts - more common in Italy than you think

Witnesses have described seeing a waterspout form during the storm before the sinking of the Bayesian.

Most are familiar with what tornadoes look like - they are rotating columns of destructive winds, protruding from the base of clouds down to the ground.

According to BBC Weather, waterspouts are just that too, but are over water rather than land.

Instead of dust and debris swirling around the core of strong winds, it is water mist whipped up from the surface.

Like tornadoes, most are only short-lived, narrow columns and are not easily picked out on weather radars, so many will go unreported.

A graphic showing how tornado-like waterspouts form in fair weather or in thunderstorms

However, they are not as rare as you may think.

According to the International Centre for Waterspout Research there were 18 confirmed waterspouts off the coast of Italy on 19 August alone.

In the northern hemisphere, waterspouts are most common in late summer and through the autumn, when sea temperatures are at their highest, fuelling the storm clouds.

However, with sea temperatures rising due to climate change there is a concern that they could become more common.

In the last week, the Mediterranean has registered its highest sea surface temperature on record, which has helped to energise this recent storm outbreak.

Did Bayesian's mast snap?

The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020.

According to Perini's website Bayesian has a 75m (246ft) mast which it claims is the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht anchored nearby at the time of the storm, said there was a "very strong hurricane gust" and he had to battle to keep his vessel steady.

He saw the Bayesian's mast "bend and then snap", according to Italy's Corriere della Sera daily newspaper.

But, providing an update on the rescue mission, Marco Tilotta, from the Palermo fire service divers' unit, told AFP the ship was lying on its side in one piece.

Graph showing the dimensions of the Bayesian super yacht which is 56m in length and has a mast which is 72.3m high

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, explained it is difficult to say whether the mast broke.

"I think, and this is pure guess work, but the evidence that we are getting from the divers is the vessel is basically intact, lying on its side reportedly," he told the BBC.

"If the mast was broken, that would be a significant thing that would be reported."

Mr Schanck added he believed what happened to Bayesian was "a freak event".

"Vessels aren't designed to be out sailing in that weather - 65 to 85mph that's the top of what a vessel would be out in and that's with its sails down," he said.

"They aren't designed to sail through tornadoes or water spouts."

Separately, Sam Jefferson who is the editor of Sailing Today magazine, added: “The manner in which the yacht was built - how many watertight bulkheads it had et cetera - is vital to understanding what happened.

“Superyachts are air conditioned so most, if not all, the windows and doors are closed at night to keep the boat cool."

Record-breaking Mediterranean temperatures

Since mid-June the sea surrounding Sicily – the western Mediterranean Basin – has been experiencing a severe heatwave.

The European Union’s climate change service, Copernicus, has been reporting sea surface temperatures in the region have repeatedly breached 30°C (86F) - four degrees higher than the 20-year average for this time of the year.

Spanish researchers at the Institut de Ciencies del Mar in Barcelona confirmed last Thursday the maximum sea surface temperature record had been broken in the Mediterranean Sea.

In both 2023 and 2024, the record was broken for the highest average temperature recorded around the world on one day .

Scientists put the rapidly rising temperatures down to climate change – oceans have taken the brunt of rising temperatures absorbing around 90% of the excess heat.

Following last year’s record ocean temperatures, Prof Mike Meredith from the British Antarctic Survey told the BBC: "The fact that all this heat is going into the ocean, and in fact, it's warming in some respects even more rapidly than we thought it would, is a cause for great concern.”

Billionaire Mike Lynch Super Yacht Sinking refers to an August 2024 disaster in which Irish tech billionaire Mike Lynch's $18 million super yacht (named the Bayesian) sank off the coast of Sicily, Italy with Lynch, his daughter Hannah Lynch and others on board, including Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer, going missing. The event garnered significant press coverage and caused viral reactions on social media sites like Twitter / X and Reddit, sparking discourse and memes similar to the OceanGate Titanic Submarine Incident in which British billionaire Hamish Harding passed away in an expensive vessel. The layman's reaction to both disasters indicated a humorous lack of empathy for the uber-rich.

Mike Lynch is an Irish tech billionaire known for founding Autonomy — a search engine for emails and internal business documents that helps companies find information quickly. Mike Lynch has been infamously involved in American and British legal battles based on the sale of Autonomy to HP in which Lynch was accused of cooking the books to make the sale. At the time, HP valued Autonomy at $46 billion. Many have compared him to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs . [1]

On August 19th, 2024, Mike Lynch's $18 million super yacht the Bayesian reportedly sank off the coast of Sicily, Italy when it faced an unexpected storm. Rescue teams quickly saved 15 passengers who were on board. One man was found dead. Six passengers were still missing as of August 20th, including Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah Lynch, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo.
