Back in 2014, the world would first hear the name Dynamiq. Well, ten years later, this team is still alive and thriving, and they’ve done this by being responsible for some of the world’s most amazing floating paradises. One such haven is its conceptual Global 550, a ship that looks like a miniature aircraft carrier.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Folks, the machine before us today is nothing other than the Global 550 from none other than Dynamiq, a shipyard cranking out wonders from the Antalya Free Zone in Turkey. While it’s currently just a concept for the world to drool over, the fact of the matter is that this puppy can be built and delivered with a production time of 30 months.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Heck, one may be under construction as we speak – this line was unveiled in late 2023 – and we wouldn’t know it. You know how people are when they’re required to spend at least €27.9M ($30.2M) on something like this; it’s all very hush-hush. But that doesn’t stop us from diving deeper into what the world should be expecting in the next couple of years.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

According to Dynamiq’s website, this puppy is meant to be the “ next-generation go-anywhere explorer .” If you know anything about this industry, you know that explorer classes can obtain unrestricted travel to just about any place on the planet. Watch out for those pirates.

To bring this rather landing strip-like machine to life, Dynamiq will be using nothing but tried and tested aluminum with a superstructure that’s crafted from the same stuff. With this base, Dynamiq crafts a superyacht that can attain a top speed of 16 knots (18.4 mph) and can cruise for over 5,000 nautical miles (5,753 miles) with just two 625 kW (838 hp) engines.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

But this is a “ next-generation ” superyacht, and that means something. First off, that hull includes a few traits that help it reduce drag and increase efficiency. One feature that assists in this is a Hull Vane, developed by naval architects over at Van Oossanen, and creating hydrodynamic lift. Couple that with those two Volvo Penta D16-850 engines with 625 kW of power each, and we’re set to kick off our global explorations.

Now, vessels like these are rarely the works of just one team, and Dynamiq had the help of three other teams. This includes Vripack Yacht Design, Dobroserdov Design, and Zrobim Architects. All these teams have been tested, proven, and even awarded for their work since the beginning of their history.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Heck, Vripack has been active since 1961, so you know they mean some serious business. Dobroserdov has only been around since 2010, but by nestling itself on the coast of Monaco, it has risen to be known the world over, and Zrobim, an interior design agency from Belarus, has been scooping up award after award for their works since 2011. They even have a YouTube channel showing how they operate, so if you’re into the interior design you see here, be sure to check them out.

The result of this collaboration is spread out over five decks, coming in with a length of 55.7 m (182 ft) and a beam of 9 m (29.5 ft) at its widest, and a deck design that takes the idea of an explorer yacht and tweaks just enough to create a “different” yet no less marvelous machine than any other I’ve seen.

For example, what really captivated my attention when it came to the 550 was the menacing and aircraft carrier-like look. This is brought forth by the helipad on the rear but also by that bow structure protruding from the main deck, with the latter looking a whole like a landing or takeoff strip for airplanes.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Alas, it is not. This section of the 550 seems to be for nothing more than just good old lounging around and soaking up the sun. Maybe a touch of dancing while the very tip of this iceberg-crushing machine will have you feeling like you’re floating above the world. Oh, and judging by the deck layout on Dynamiq’s page, there’s a toy garage hidden in this forward section, and there’s also one more at the rear under the helipad.

As for the all-important interior, it’s here that we see the result of Zrobim’s work, and frankly, I was expecting something a tad more luxurious. I’m not saying the interior doesn’t scream elegance; it does, but notes of marble and wood actually bring forth a more homey feeling rather than a party boat.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Large expansive lounges blend an array of materials, colors, and textures and are supported by natural light flooding in through massive floor-to-ceiling windows, bringing out their true colors; light reveals all, and the 550 doesn’t lack a view of the outside world. However, the few images we do see are but renderings, so don’t get hung up on them too much; the eventual owners of this world-cruising machine will be able to customize this aspect, as things should be when spending millions of dollars on anything.

As I mentioned before, we don’t currently know of any millionaire or billionaire having  stepped up to the Global 550 plate , but be sure that when this thing hits international waters, the world will be watching.

Yacht-Top: Shipbuilders Want To Turn Retired Navy Aircraft Carrier Into A Luxury Yacht

Mitsi Studio present the first concept Yacht inspired by Aircraft Carrier

celebreMagazine

Inspired by the great American aircraft carriers, the concept of the mega-yacht created by Mitsi Studio develops the spaces in a way never seen before in the world of luxury navigation, with particular attention to air traffic…

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

For the moment, it is only a graphic concept of which you don’t have much information (and looking for a potential supporter). Still, the stylistic exercise proposed by Mitsi Studio can only stand out for its sophistication and daring.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Inspired by aircraft carriers, the lines drawn by the “virtual pencil” of Thomas Loopstra, co-founder of Mitsi Studio, have taken – for the first time in history – inspiration from the world of the great aircraft carriers of the U.S. Navy to give birth to the features that characterize the concept of this very interesting mega-yacht.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

The spaces distributed more original than ever before; Characterized by a central bridge made entirely of wood perfect for the take-off and landing of helicopters and aircraft. Also as living-area with overlapping bridges located on the right (in the section of the hull that on the aircraft carriers houses the control tower, or what is called in technical jargon “island”), the mega yacht of Mitsi Studio places the mobility of aircraft (as well as a large amount of air traffic) on board at the centre of a project.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

The air traffic will be at the centre of the vision. The graphic sketches show the presence on board (with a certain optimism) of civil versions of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter and – no less – of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II (the very famous multi-role stealth-fighter of N.A.T.O.), which could realistically be replaced by A109 helicopters or AW609 tiltrotors, to give some examples.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

But that’s not all. In fact, with a system of tilting surfaces, the mega-yacht inspired by the US super-yacht. Designed by Mitsi Studio can allow large green areas to replace the main take-off deck during navigation, thus allowing the occupants (who already with the floor in “full” flight configuration have relaxation areas with vegetation to crown the furnishings of the curved swimming pool) to have increasingly large relaxation areas and to play golf, as well as many other solutions-oriented towards comfort and relaxation. For now, it is only a dream, but it is undoubtedly a very, very fascinating concept.

The UAE’s Flagship Luxury Yacht Took Design Cues from U.S. Aircraft Carriers

The 459-foot mega yacht has an interesting profile that makes it look like an armed ship..

The Trekkie in me — yes I love Star Trek ; n o, I don’t go to conventions — didn’t realize that naval flagships were an actual thing, the way that the Enterprise is the flagship of the Federation. A pparently many countries in the world have their own respective flagship — or have had one at one time. The United Arab Emirates, though, wasn’t one of those countries, but that could change. Maybe . Robb Report details how a designer has penned a super yacht concept that is supposed to be a flagship of the UAE, even though it kind of looks like a U.S. aircraft carrier .

Designer Enzo Manca collaborated with an unknown sultan who feels the UAE needs a flagship to create this yacht’s look. T he exterior design takes cues from defensive vessels, mainly U.S. aircraft carriers. You can really see it in the yacht’ s tower — known as Pry-fly (primary flight control) on aircraft carriers — which rises above the rest of the ship. The tower’s windows, like the rest on the ship, are tinted for privacy.

The term superyacht is used literally here. This thing is massive and has space in spades to keep those on board comfortable and entertained. It’s 459 feet long and towers 130 feet over the water. It boasts 30,000 square feet of interior space spread across nine decks. There’s a private suite for the owner or captain or whatever, 14 mini apartments and eight cabins. That’s all in addition to another 35 cabins for the ship’s crew. Presumably to receive dignitaries or other rich people, there are gathering areas like meeting rooms — and even a press briefing room.

There’s even space on board for a small fleet of vehicles. There’s a hangar that’s described as “sheltering the presidential helicopter, ” a mini port with a submarine and two helipads that can hold choppers up to 55 feet long.

And when it comes time to chill, a ship like this definitely has plenty amenities. On the main deck, which is covered in over 30,000 square feet of teak, there’s a 59 foot transversal swimming pool, while on the bow, there’s a circular sofa with a fireplace as its centerpiece. There’s also a spa, gym and wellness center — because of course there is.

Enzo Manca hasn’t given any details on what powers the ship or whether or not it’s going to be built, but he did tell Robb Report that renderings of the interior will be coming later this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if this thing ends up being one of the world’s most expensive yachts.

Superyacht Concepts Waugh Decadence

To stand out from the crowd, more and more superyacht buyers—many new to the market—are challenging designers to break molds, go extreme, and think way outside of the traditional box. And they’re doing it with head-spinning bow designs, huge windows, and much larger interior and exterior spaces.

They’re also trading traditional monohulls for big-volume catamarans and trimarans, taking inspiration from oddball places—an aircraft carrier or 1930s Hollywood-style automobile—and, at the same time, future-proofing them with new propulsion systems, including hydrogen fuel cells, solar power, and advanced battery power.

These 10 concepts, from a range of designers and studios, show that the future of superyacht design has never been more exciting—if at times a little bizarre.

Sinot, ‘Aware’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Not all superyachts need to look like multi-tiered wedding cakes. That’s according to Dutch studio Sinot Yacht, which has just penned conceptual renderings for a sleek, almost-minimalist cruiser called Aware . Yes, the 262-footer does have the look of some super-stylish European river boat from the likes of Viking or Uniworld. But the aim here is to optimize the spaces experienced owners tend to use the most. Like the owner’s suite on the main deck, which in Aware spans the full beam and totals over 860 square feet. Then there’s the super-size beach club with its twin fold-out terraces, gym, bar, cinema, 36-foot-long pool, and glass-sided dining area. As for power, Sinot envisions a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system good for a 21 mph max, and a 4,000 nautical mile range at 14 mph.

Icon Yachts, ‘Mission’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Ice-breaking, globe-trotting expedition yachts are nothing new for Holland’s Icon Yachts. Its rugged, 224-foot, converted ice-breaker Ragnar literally wrote the rule-book on building high-latitude-friendly luxury superyachts. But Icon’s concept for a brand-new, ultimate explorer it’s calling Mission adds Indiana Jones–levels of off-the-grid exploration. Designed by Dutch explorer-yacht specialist Bernd Weel, Mission is all towering, ice-crushing bow, trademark geometric hull sides, and endless space for all that adventure-seeking gear. Here we’re talking six tenders of all sizes, a three-person submersible, an Airbus H130 helicopter, and space midships for a multitude of shipping containers for when you want to become the next Jacques Cousteau. As for range, Icon would target over 6,000 nautical miles.

Andy Waugh Yacht Design, ‘Decadence’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Flick through the pages of any automotive history book and you’ll notice that 1930s design is dominated by the outrageous, teardrop-fendered creations of the French duo of Figoni et Falaschi. Their designs look to be the inspiration behind London-based designer Andy Waugh’s jaw-dropping concept for a 264-foot catamaran he quite aptly calls Decadence . Featuring a central hull flanked by four teardrop-like pods, the concept evolves the idea of so-called SWATH catamaran hull design used in a number of oil-platform support, research vessels, and even some superyachts. Providing immense stability through reduced roll and pitch, the design makes perfect sense for a superyacht. One drawback: the yacht’s massive, marina-unfriendly 98-foot beam. Though that becomes a positive when you consider Decadence ‘s vast owner’s suite measures 66 feet wide and almost 100 feet long.

Oceanco, ‘Aeolus’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

When the Dutch superyacht maestros at Oceanco release a blue-sky design, the concept is likely just a few steps away from reality. Fresh from delivering the 410-foot Koru , the world’s largest sailing yacht, to new owner Jeff Bezos, and the 357-foot Seven Seas to Steven Spielberg, Oceanco has unveiled Aeolus , a concept for a highly sustainable 430-foot gigayacht. Drawn by former Rolls-Royce head of design Giles Taylor, this curvaceous, quad-deck world cruiser looks to the future by incorporating Oceanco’s Energy Transition Platform (ETP) philosophy. The propulsion could start with diesel-electric power, with battery banks charged by twin MTU V16 diesel generators. Then, as technologies advance, it could more to more advanced fuel types such as methanol or other, even wilder technologies like nuclear power.

Anthony Glasson, ‘Star Trek’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Designed to boldly go across oceans, this concept for a massive 275-foot trimaran i s said to have been inspired by Hong Kong–based designer Anthony Glasson’s love of the TV show “Star Trek”—especially the Starship Enterprise . Viewed bow-on, you can see why: The slender, wave-piercing bow, the twin side hulls, and rounded glass upper observation deck have USS Enterprise written all over it. But the trimaran form definitely adds to its function, with the wide beam creating an expansive “courtyard” that’s part enclosed and part open, housing a hot tub—one of three aboard—a gym, a bar, sunpads galore and even a helipad-turned-dancefloor. Glasson envisions the trimaran to be built of lightweight aluminum, with a 5,000-nautical-mile range. Captain Kirk would be impressed.

Jozeph Forakis, ‘Pegasus’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Until now, arguably the ultimate stealth boat was the one in the 1997 James Bond romp Tomorrow Never Dies , owned by tyrannical media mogul Elliot Carver. That would change if the 289-foot concept Pegasus , from the computer screen of N.Y.C.-born and now Milan-based designer Jozeph Forakis, gets a production go-ahead. It features a superstructure comprising three over-lapping “wings” with metallic surfaces designed to reflect the sky and the clouds, rendering the superyacht near-invisible. The “wings” also do double duty as solar panels generating energy that would be used to convert sea water to hydrogen. Fuel cells would then turn the hydrogen into electricity that would be then stored in banks of lithium-ion batteries, making Pegasus essentially emissions-free with a virtually infinite cruising range.

Lazzarini, ‘Plectrum’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Why fly through the water when you can fly on top? That’s the thinking behind Rome-based Lazzarini Design’s radical 243-foot hydrofoiling superyacht concept named Plectrum . Massive foils deploy from the sides of the yacht’s rounded carbon-fiber hull, while a trio of 5,000 hp engines would elevate the yacht out of the water and punch it to a top speed of over 80 mph. It’s a similar concept used in the latest America’s Cup AC75 foiling monohull sailboats, along with a crop of electric powerboats and surfboards. Applying the technology to a 243-foot superyacht is what’s new and possibly technically impossible, at least for now. Other stand-out features of this bright-orange flyer include a helicopter garage beneath the mile-long foredeck and a garage for your supercar at the stern.

Phantom and Golden Yachts, ‘Vesper’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

When it comes to next-generation superyacht design, it seems glass is fast becoming the new steel. Take the collaboration between the design team at Holland’s Phantom Studios and Athens-based superyacht builder Golden Yachts. The 213-foot concept they’re calling Vesper features five levels of floor-to-ceiling structural glass, a glass floor in the yacht’s upper deck lounge, and a glass-sided swimming pool. Connecting the beach club to the pool is a huge, high-lifting hatch that’s, what else, all glass. Now head to the owner’s “suite”—it’s more like a two-level penthouse in a Miami skyscraper—and it features floor-to-very-high-ceiling glass that floods the space with light. To catch some real rays, the full-deck suite features not one, but two outdoor terraces.

DeBasto Design, MED

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

Think of this as a 301-foot dayboat with the emphasis on outdoor, alfresco, lounge-in-the-sun, Mediterranean living. From the drawing board of Miami-based designer Luiz de Basto, Project MED features uninterrupted, bow-to-stern open teak decks topped with a huge upper superstructure supported by just four columns. And to ensure the superstructure doesn’t dominate the superyacht’s sleek lines, de Basto covered it in reflective glass so that it almost disappears from view by mirroring its surroundings. The designer says his inspiration came from the idea of “Agora,” named after the squares in Ancient Greek villages where everyone congregated. Aboard Project MED, that could be on the main deck, around the oversized pool at the stern, or on the vast open foredeck.

Enzo Manca, ‘UAE One’

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

There are superyachts designed to look like military warships. Some even are shaped to look like navy submarines. But here’s a first; a superyacht inspired by the lines of an aircraft carrier. The 459-foot UAE One is from the fertile mind of Milan-based designer Enzo Manca who created the concept for an unnamed United Arab Emirates sheikh looking to create an official UAE flagship. Without a doubt, the design highlight is the yacht’s runway-like main deck. It features not one, but three helipads, a conning tower-like, four-level structure on the starboard side, a geometric-shaped pool and a huge circular “conversation pit” right on the bow, complete with cozy sofas and a firepit. Accommodations over nine decks include five “super suites”, eight master cabins, 14 mini apartments, and 35 cabins for the crew of 65.

10 of the biggest superyacht conversions

Related articles, superyacht directory.

It's not easy to transform a vessel built for function into a thing of beauty. But, if done right, the results can be magnificent. From naval frigates to ice-breaking tugs, we take a look at the top ten largest superyacht conversions to date...

1. Yas | 141m

Yas was first delivered in 1978 as a naval frigate named HNLMS Piet Hein . After two decades of service in the Dutch Royal Navy and a decade serving the UAE military, she was released from duty and converted into a private yacht under the codename Swift 141. Jacques Pierrejean is the man behind her futuristic design which includes a giant glass dome. The entire project was carried out in Abu Dhabi and the vessel was extended by 12 metres to accommodate a new pool deck. In 2011, she was relaunched in Port Zayed in Abu Dhabi and is the 11th largest yacht in the world .

2. Maryah | 125m

The 125 metre former Russian research vessel sailed under the names Dalmorgeologiya , Fortune and Czar , before she was converted into a SOLAS-compliant superyacht by Greek shipyard Elefis in 2015. Details of her interiors have been closely guarded but are said to feature a cinema and accommodation for 54 guests across her six decks.

3. Alexander | 121.95m

Alexander first splashed in 1965 and served as a cruise liner until 1985 when, after several changes of ownership, she was converted into a superyacht by Greek shipping tycoon John Latsis. She was extensively refitted in 1985 and then again in 1998, with accommodation for up to 80 guests in 40 staterooms. Highlights include a swimming pool, hospital, gymnasium, a 27-seat cinema and a helicopter landing pad.

4. Project Y910 | 120m

Built in Poland in 1990, the 90 metre vessel served as an offshore supply ship named after the Russian writer Vladimir Chivilikhin . The ship was in service until 1998 when its owner decided to convert the vessel into a luxury per-cabin charter yacht under the project name KAY. Work on the hull began at Keppel Singmarine before the yacht made its way to Italy for outfitting at Fincantieri. The half-built project was put up for auction in November 2021. Currently lying at the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste, she patiently awaits a new owner.

5. Turama | 116.41 m

Christened Delfin Caravelle, the 116 metre vessel was delivered as a passenger ship in 1990 by Finnish shipyard Rauma and converted into a luxury charter yacht in 2004. Little is known about the conversion of Turama .

6. Dream | 106.5m

The 106.5 metre Dream was born into the world as a humble passenger vessel before she embarked on a near decade-long conversion project to fulfil the lifelong dream of an ambitious new owner. Under the project name Poseidonos, work began in 2008 at Chalkis Shipyards in Greece with exterior design by Studio Vafiadis and an all-new interior by  Ciarmoli Queda Studio. The team's efforts were rewarded when Dream picked up a Neptune for Best Converted Yacht at the 2019 World Superyacht Awards .

7. Christina O | 99.15m

Christina O was built for the Canadian Navy as an anti-submarine frigate under the name HMCS Stormont .  After surviving in the second world war, she was purchased for scrap value by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who then converted her into the legendary Christina O . A six-year conversion ensued and she was reborn in 1954 as an ultra-luxury private yacht that was regularly seen to host royalty and the Hollywood A-list with the likes of Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Sir Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly, John F Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor welcomed on board.

8. Voyager | 91.4m

Previously known as Danah Voyager , the conversion of this former offshore supply ship is the largest to take place on American soil. First delivered by Swiftships in 1997, the 63 metre commercial vessel arrived in Dania Cut in Florida in 2016 and emerged from the sheds three years later as a 90 metre explorer with five decks, 70 crew and a dive centre.

9. Dubawi | 90.6m

Dubawi began life in 1989 as a small passenger ship built by Cantieri Navale Ferrari before she was converted into a private yacht two decades after her launch. The project was awarded to Dubai shipyard Platinum Yachts and remains one of its biggest projects to date, second only to the 162 metre Dubai . Work included a five-metre extension, a restructuring of the top deck and an entirely new interior.

Aircraft Carrier Could Be Relaunched as Luxury Commonwealth Yacht

BMT Nigel Gee HMS Illustrious Image 4

British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious could continue its life as a disaster relief ship - despite getting a radical makeover as a luxury yacht. Bold plans have reimagined the 31-year-old vessel, which leaves Royal Navy service later this year, as the 'Commonwealth Yacht' with three modern 'sails' containing bedrooms, restaurants and conference suites towering above deck. Yet below deck the 23,000-tonne vessel could still contain a hospital, heavy-duty trucks and equipment to help in a global disaster, designers claim.

The ship, which returned from an aid mission to the typhoon-hit Philippines on Friday, will be the last of the Navy's three Invincible class light aircraft carriers to be decommissioned later this year. The controversial decision will leave Britain without a single aircraft carrier until two new £6 billion vessels enter service in 2020.

PHOTOS: The old ship-carrying ship transformed into a billionaire’s yacht

Some ships carry men, some ships carry cargos, some ships even carry other ships, and then there is a ship which carried out to become a billionaire’s plaything.

The eyes of a luxury ship designer, Timor Bozca fell over a ship-carrying ship. He observed it as an opportunity to transform this old Japanese transport vessel into a billionaire’s yacht. It took him almost three years to completely re-engineer the ship into a yacht. This transfigured model has recently come out of the Turkish Karmarine Shipyard.

Super Servant 3, the aging Japanese transportation ship was built in 1982 by a commercial shipbuilder company, Oshima Shipbuilding .

When it no longer served as a transportation ship, it became a remodeling project for the designer. It underwent a three-year-long renovation which included the installation of a swimming pool, a jacuzzi, a tennis court, an outdoor cinema, four aquariums, and many other things according to the billionaire’s choice. It also has a 40-ton crane and a vertical wind turbine attached to it.

Also, Watch Why Aircraft Carriers are Smaller than Cargo Ships?

Its spacious deck is transformed into a garage to harbor ‘different gadgets, crafts and toys’. Bozca says “it can fit everything from a 150 ft sailing yacht to small tenders, buggies, amphibious vehicles, and even a seaplane.”

This remodeled yacht is named OK and still retains some original structures of the old transport ship. It means that the yacht can still be submerged into the sea so that the ships or some other crafts can sail over.

OK is a motor yacht of length 146 meters, which can accommodate around 20 people, and has a special owner’s cabin with a panoramic 360-degree view of the ocean to provide a much more majestic experience.

OK is currently not for sale, so its cost is still a secret for the world just like the name of its owner.

Yacht-Top: Shipbuilders Want To Turn Retired Navy Aircraft Carrier Into A Luxury Yacht

Photo of zenger.news

A team of Germans has unveiled the first effort to convert a 58-year-old French aircraft carrier into a luxury yacht, complete with golf course.

The Foch was the second Clemenceau-class aircraft carrier to serve with the French Navy from 1963 to 2000, after which it was sold to Brazil and renamed São Paulo.

The historically important vessel, which carried 40 modern aircraft, was decommissioned in 2018. Since then, it has been used for scraping recyclable materials. A Turkish company bought it in March 2021 for $1.86 million in order to dismantle the ship.

Several medium-sized German companies from Düsseldorf have now joined forces for a project called the Düsseldorf Initiative to buy out and convert the 869-foot ship flight deck into a luxurious leisure space.

The new concept is based on the Dutch Studio Mitsi’s Super Yacht model, called the Noah Twins Carrier , which is a design for the first aircraft yacht in the world.

Udo Stern, entrepreneur and spokesperson for the Düsseldorf Initiative, said he was looking for an international investor who will buy the ship, pay the transfer costs and finance its renovation. The group companies would then be involved in the yacht deal.

“It’s not about the money for us. I’m thinking of a European ship of cultures, a globally unique project to transform a military into a civilian object,” Stern said.

He also said the 148,000-square-foot hangar under the flight deck holds a sufficient amount of space for exhibitions, sporting events, cinemas and concerts.

The team is waiting for France’s resale approval, which is pending.

Stern said a visionary from the tourism industry could easily — and profitably — convert the ship’s 55 military rooms into hotel rooms, casinos and restaurants.

The Clemenceau-class aircraft carriers Clemenceau and Foch formed the backbone of the world’s second-largest carrier force for the latter half of the Cold War. Both vessels were of CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take-Off Barrier Arrested Recovery) design, which was a system used for the launch and recovery of aircraft from the deck of carriers.

The ship can sail at a maximum speed of 30kt (34 mph), and accommodate 1,920 personnel, including ship company, air group and troops.

The disposal of the São Paulo aircraft carrier carries controversy

The dismantling of the French-origin ship has sparked discussion over the pollution risk associated with the scrap-cutting process.

“The French Courts stopped the scrapping of the asbestos-laden aircraft carrier Clemenceau on the beach of Alang, India, in 2006. Fifteen years later, France is faced with a second toxic headache, said the NGO Shipbreaking Platform in a press release.

“It is estimated that onboard the vessel there are approximately 900 tons of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials, hundreds of tons of PCB-containing materials and large quantities of heavy metals.“

“The large amounts of asbestos still onboard the São Paulo need to be handled and disposed of without exposing workers and surrounding communities to the risk of cancer,” said Annie Thebaud-Mony, director of research at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Paris.

aircraft carrier turned into yacht

“The contractual clause in the sale of the Foch to Brazil gives France the last say in where the aircraft carrier can be dismantled. French authorities must direct the Clemeceau’s sister ship to an EU-approved facility — anything else would be a scandal,” she said.

The São Paulo-Foch Institute in Brazil — a group of Brazilian and French ex-military personnel — hopes to prevent the aircraft carrier, São Paulo, from being dismantled. They want to turn it into a museum.

“It would be much more profitable and beneficial than dismantling the ship. Approximately 600 tons of asbestos — hazardous for human health and nature — are encapsulated in the ship. Such an agreement would decrease the ship’s dismantling expenses, and transporting the ship to the Mediterranean will be very expensive.”

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform sent a letter to the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization in June 2021.

“The aircraft carrier should not be allowed to leave Brazil until and unless the IHM [an Inventory Hazardous Materials certificate] is completed.  [The sale of the ship] must therefore be annulled and subject to rebidding, based on legal constraints and a proper and accurate IHM,“ said the NGO.

The dismantling process is to take place at the Aliaga district’s ship recycling facilities.

Now's Your Chance To Buy Your Own Aircraft Carrier

For sale: One HMS Illustrious , in good condition, 900,000 miles.

Watercraft, Water, Tourism, Boat, Waterway, Naval ship, Naval architecture, Navy, Ship, Cruiser,

If you've been dying to get a bumper sticker that says "My other car is an aircraft carrier," then now's the time to open the checkbook.  The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence just happens to have a recently retired carrier for sale.

Illustrious was third of the Invincible class of helicopter carriers. At 686 feet long and 22,000 tons fully loaded, the Invincibles had full-length flight decks and a ski ramp to launch Sea Harrier jump jets. Built to escort convoys across the Atlantic in a World War III scenario, the ships could carry up to a dozen Sea Harriers and ten helicopters.

Illustrious served the Royal Navy for 32 years but was retired in 2014, a victim of budget cuts. Currently moored in Portsmouth Harbor, she's been emptied out in anticipation of the sale. The ship currently displaces 17,000 tons and still has her massive twin 15-foot-diameter bronze propellers, as well as her six Rolls Royce Olympus marine gas turbine engines. The hull is described as being in "good" condition (though we all know what "good" really means on the used vehicle market).  Here's a video of  Illustrious  conducting flight operations while on active duty:

The carrier's flat top has been demilitarized, so don't count on getting her three Goalkeeper gatling guns  or her pair of 20-millimeter cannons. Or any aircraft, for that matter—the U.S. Marines bought all the Harriers for spare parts and the helicopters will find new homes on HMS Queen Elizabeth , a new carrier set to enter service in 2017.

Naval ship, Water, Watercraft, Boat, Warship, Navy, Naval architecture, Destroyer, Ship, Cruiser,

One curious note: the Ministry of Defense intends to remove "material coatings" from the upper hull and superstructure before transferring ownership, and it warns this action will make the ship pretty darn ugly. Whatever those coatings do, the MoD doesn't want them passing into strange hands. Could it be something like an anti-radar coating, in order to reduce the ship's radar signature?

The Ministry of Defense handout says the ship is "for recycling only", meaning the buyer is expected to scrap it. Wink-wink. Obviously, HMS Illustrious is just begging to be turned into the world's largest private yacht. Think of it as a super-sized version of this oil-rig hauler turned into a " luxurious toy for the ultra-rich . "

Alternately, if you're feeling patriotic and your country has never before had an aircraft carrier, you could buy it with the stated intention of turning it into a casino . That's what the Hong Kong-based Chung Lot Travel Agency did in 1998 with the junked Soviet carrier Riga , only to have it mysteriously become the Chinese Navy's first aircraft carrier, Liaoning .

Interested parties must file with Her Majesty's Government by May 23, with a viewing scheduled in June. You're going to need a bank guarantee of $2.8 million to convince the government you're a serious player. If you win, you'll never have to convince anyone you're a player ever again.

Superyacht Conversions – From Workboat To Luxury Yacht

Suri fierce-contender Yacht Conversion

During the years I spent as a cadet on SUNY Maritime ‘s training ship Empire State , I could not begin to tally up the hours spent chipping, wire wheeling, priming and painting.  But no matter how hard we worked it never looked good enough for the Chief Mate. When I got aboard my first working ship, the product Tanker M/V Patriot, I naturally took with me the work ethic and attention to detail learned at the academy. Not a good idea.

As I worked tirelessly to make the fire hose stations, I was tasked to repair look presentable the Chief Mate stopped by and said “This is not, and will never look like, the QE2. Just make sure the danm thing works!”  Well it took many years to prove but I am happy to report that a working ship, no matter what her condition, can look like the QE2 when placed in the hands of Stubbert Maritime .

The vessel shown above is the M/V SuRi formerly the 166′ Seattle based crabber Fierce Contender. Why would you convert a working boat into a luxury yacht? To use it as an escort ship to carry the helicopter, jet boat and other “toys” for your larger yacht!

Unfortunately the idea didn’t seem to work, as the escort yacht’s mothership, the MY Jemasa, is now for sale . We don’t know the details behind the liquidation but, after interior decorating , fuel charge, hiring a crew… running two yachts can not be cheap. No worries though, there are other uses for working ships in the Super-Yacht community, like a floating Yacht Club!

Pacific Provider - Floating Yacht Club

The above drawing is of another fishing vessel conversion the F/V Shelikof. The San Diego Based Ellisworth Marine tells us:

Following a six-month conversion process, the F/V Shelikof will serve as the clubhouse for the “Eastern Pacific Yacht Club (EPYC),” an exclusive membership club offering both boaters and non-boat owners a luxury social platform, water sports, sportfishing and provisioning at sea in the hottest fishing and cruising locations on the Western U.S. and Mexican coastlines. The ship, to be re-christened the M/V “Pacific Provider”, will feature six luxury suites, two 35′ game boats, 60,000 gallons of fuel, dining room, bar, lounge, theater, gymnasium, jet skis, kayaks, sailboats and a variety of other amenities. In the event you prefer to arrive by air, the Pacific Provider also offers a commercially certified helicopter deck. Read More…

M/Y Devotion Photos

Next on the agenda for Stubbert was the creation of the M/Y Devotion. Maritime Executive tells us:

Stabbert Maritime Group has recently completed refit of the 143 ft Motor Yacht Devotion (ex Marjorie Morningstar). Late in 2007 a localized fire in the guest area exposed the vessel to smoke damage. Stabbert Maritime, recognizing the potential value and quality of the damaged yacht, purchased the vessel and began a complete refit. Read More…

M/Y Sahara

In today’s headlines SNYFO tells us:

Stabbert Yacht and Ship (SYS) announces the sale of the 308ft Sahara to a European buyer. The yacht has a previous life as a NOAA Research Ship, and is currently undergoing a complete refit and conversion at SYS in Seattle. The vessel will be exported from the US and may benefit from a new export financing program that SYS say they are now offering to international buyers. Under the program, Stabbert is able to offer competitive financing for buyers by guaranteeing term financing to creditworthy international buyers for purchases of US vessels and refit/conversion services.

“The advantages to foreign buyers in the current economy are enormous.” states CEO Dan Stabbert. “Market conditions present unique opportunities to buy seaworthy commercial vessels for conversion to exploration yachts, shadow boats, or for specialized missions such as oil research or security duties”. Paul Madden adds, “At a time when conventional finance may be difficult to obtain, we can provide a financial package that enables foreign buyers to get on with their projects right now.” Read more…

Well, it’s certainly not the average shipyard job but the teams converting these working ships are doing a great job. Let’s just hope the sales continue through this tough economy.
