Yacht Club de Monaco: Flagship events in 2024!
After commemorating 70 years of the Monaco Yacht Club last year, the celebrations will continue in 2024 with the 10th anniversary of the new Club House, designed by Lord Foster.
14th Monaco Optimist Team Race (10-14 January)
Starting on 10 January, the international elite of Optimist team-racing will be heading to Monaco. 17 nations (United States, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Monaco among them) will be represented by 72 sailors aged under 14.
Organised in match race format, the competition will consist of duels between teams of four. A total of 153 rounds are scheduled to be fought out in Monegasque waters.
16th Economic Symposium (8 February)
Organised in the form of a dinner-debate, the aim of the La Belle Classe Superyachts symposium, which brings together yacht owners and professionals by invitation, is to analyse the yachting sector, explore its developments and gain a better understanding of its challenges and issues.
Primo Cup-Trophée UBS (7-10 March)
The best international J/70 crews will meet again for the continuation of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, Act 3 (8-11 February). Over the last eleven years, this series of monthly regattas has become an unmissable fixture on the winter calendar.
Currently led by the Monegasque crew of Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio’s G-Spot, the series promises to be hotly contested. To round off the winter season, the J/70s will meet one last time in Act 4 (7-10 March).
The weekend will coincide with the 40th Primo Cup-Trophée UBS, which will bring together the Smeralda 888s, the Longtze Premiers, the RS 21s, the Cape 31s — not forgetting the Surprises.
March will conclude on an equally sporting note with the second Women Leading and Sailing Trophy (15-17 March), an all-female J/70 event organised in collaboration with the Monegasque and French Sailing Federations.
Monaco Ocean Week (18-22 March)
During Monaco Ocean Week, organised by the Prince Albert II Foundation along with the Monaco Oceanographic Institute and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, the Yacht Club has been entrusted with the yachting aspect of the week, which is dedicated to protecting the oceans.
On Thursday 21 March, the Y.C.M. will be hosting a series of three events, starting with the 13th Environmental Symposium. Following on from the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous, organised in September by M3 (Monaco Marina Management), the Y.C.M. will be hosting the 2nd Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous on 21 and 22 March.
Monaco Ocean Week: how can we save our underwater world?
Thursday 21 March will conclude with the presentation of the 4th YCM Explorer Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts. Organised under the presidency of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, this ceremony has been rewarding yacht owners who have distinguished themselves by their commitment to preserving the marine environment, both in the design of their yachts and in their sailing, since 2018.
Superyacht Chef Competition (4 April)
For five years now, superyacht chefs have been meeting at the Y.C.M. to test their skills in the Superyacht Chef Competition, a unique gastronomic contest organised by the Club in collaboration with Bluewater.
The idea is simple: to bring together 9 chefs who work at sea and watch them work their magic in cooking areas inspired by the limited confines of the kitchens on some yachts. “As part of La Belle Classe Academy, the Y.C.M.’s training centre, this event attracts professionals and the general public alike, providing a unique perspective on the different professions in yachting,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Y.C.M.
Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (1-6 July)
For over 10 years, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, a hub for new technologies and alternative energies, has been bringing together young engineers from schools and universities across the world, putting them in touch with key figures in the yachting industry.
In 2023, 46 teams representing 31 universities and 25 nations demonstrated the effectiveness of their shared, open source solutions. This year, SBM Offshore – also an event partner, for the fifth year in a row – will be installing a floating pontoon that will start producing green hydrogen from January on, to supply the participating teams ahead of the event.

Five Monaco Yacht Show Parties Not To Miss
Posted by IT 19 Sep 2019
All eyes in yachting circles will be closely fixed on Monaco next week when the world’s most important luxury yachting event sails into town. Award-winning superyachts, cutting edge designs and state-of-the-art technology are all on the agenda for the 29th edition of the international yachting event — not forgetting a host of eagerly anticipated Monaco Yacht Show parties, of course…
For while many visitors flock to the annual Monaco Yacht Show, this year held from September 25th to 28th 2019, to catch a glimpse of this year’s latest superyachts and water toys, there is a smaller contingency for whom the yacht show parties arguably hold more allure.
And who can blame them? The Monaco Yacht Show concludes the Mediterranean yachting season and for many, it is the first occasion for crew members and those in the yachting industry to really let their hair down. These starlit gatherings, held at a selection of Monaco’s finest locations, such as the Yacht Club de Monaco or onboard one of the world’s most stunning superyachts, also offer the perfect networking opportunities for those looking to widen their social circle.
So whether it’s wild party action or sophisticated socialising that you’re after, here are the five Monaco Yacht Show parties not to miss:
Feadship’s captains & crew party.
Starting the Monaco Yacht Show off with a bang is Feadship’s iconic Captains and Crew party. Each year has a different theme – 2018 saw Bal Masque take the stage for an opulent night complete with mindblowing performers and incredible cocktails. Anyone who’s anyone will be at the Monaco Yacht Club on Tuesday 24th September 2019, dressed to seriously impress.
James Bond Party
If you prefer your Martini shaken not stirred, then you had better make your way to the Yacht Club on Wednesday, September 25th 2019, for the famous James Bond Party. Details are hush-hush about this year’s 007 soiree, but party-goers are hoping for a repeat of last year’s event, where guests mingled with Bond girls and sipped martinis.
Fraser Captains’ Dinner and Awards
Also held every year at the Yacht Club during the Monaco Yacht Show is the Fraser Captains’ Dinner and Awards ceremony, a splendid black tie affair during which the work of Fraser’ talented team of employees is celebrated. Held on Thursday the 26th 2019, it’s all set to be a glamorous and good-natured evening for the extended Fraser Yachts family.
Amels Friday Night Fun
Traditionally held on the Friday night of the Monaco Yacht Show, the Amels and Damen party is a lively and often somewhat wild get-together onboard a highly-luxurious Amels support vessel – this year rumoured to be M/Y JOY RIDER. The music and magic is intoxicating, and it’s a wonderful way to begin the weekend in Monaco – be there on Friday 27th 2019.
Lurssen: The Party Of All Parties To End The Show
In previous years the Monaco Yacht Show party calendar has drawn to a close with a lavish, Champagne-spraying affair thrown by German shipyard Lurssen. At a previous event held at the Yacht Club de Monaco, guests were serenaded by American singer Gloria Gaynor! We can’t wait to see what is in store for this year’s party-goers…
There we have it – Relevance’s guide to five of the coolest and most exclusive Monaco Yacht Show parties to look forward to this year. We’ll see you at the show! Visit the website for more details: https://www.monacoyachtshow.com/en/

Monaco Yacht Club: An Exclusive Oasis For Marine Lovers
Looking down on the Yacht Club from Monaco’s exclusive seawater Spa, “ Thermes Marins ”, the new club-house really is a magnificent icon of multi-decked architecture – inaugurated in 2014 and designed by internationally renowned architect Lord Norman Foster.
Only in the Principality’s marina could you confuse this giant structure for the yachts around it that it resembles – a yacht mirage with a gorgeous deck with luxurious swimming pool and terraces for dancing. Splendid enough for meetings of the most discerning yacht enthusiasts, including the glitterati and “Three Comma” billionaires that frequent it.
Yachts Beyond the Reach of Mere Mortals
Some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world dock here to take in the city’s pleasures, particularly during the iconic Monaco Yacht Show. You can wander around marvelling at all of the gadgets designers can inlay on these boats like the 348-foot-long AMADEA one of the largest and most distinctive superyachts in the world with its six distinctive guest decks. Or perhaps gaze at the 365-foot-long TIS, one of the largest and most regal yachts to be launched this year.
These superyachts, like the Yacht Club itself are like private islands and wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. If billionaires Bernard Arnault or Larry Page or Larry Ellison come calling, Monaco Yacht Club sets the stage perfectly.
Home of the Grimaldi Dynasty
For over 600 years from the 12th century onwards, the Grimaldi stronghold at Port Hercule, including where the Yacht Club now preens itself, was one of the prized naval assets on the Mediterranean. Its strategic location served more than once to change the course of history.
It was around the time of the reign of Charles III of Monaco that the Principality’s reputation as an international haven of luxury and wealth took off. And Charles III had the vision to encourage the development of Monaco as a magnet for international regattas of renown to which the world flocked.
Historic Regatta Heaven
The first of these regattas were held in the bay of Monaco in 1862, so successful that in 1888 the “Société des Régates” was established by Prince Charles III and his son Prince Albert I , affectionately known as the “Oceanographer Prince”.
Almost a century of famous regattas preceded the founding in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by Prince Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Club brings together more than 2000 members from 66 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position in the International yachting world.
Prince Albert’s Presidency
In April 1984, with Prince Albert’s Presidency, he developed new international events such as the Primo Cup, the biggest gathering of monotype yachts in the Mediterranean Sea. Prince Albert also put emphasis on classic Yachting with the organization from 1994 of the Monaco Classic Week for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts.
Notably, it was the first visit of Atlantic 2010 (replica of the 1903 three-mast schooner on which Charlie Barr in 1905 set the best time for an Atlantic crossing) to the Principality. Another icon, the SS Delphine (1921) steam-boat made a welcome return. It was aboard this beauty that three world leaders, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill, negotiated at least part of the 1945 Yalta Agreement.
Yacht Seasons are typically opened with ultra-private concerts at YCM with celebrities like Sir Elton John in 2016, Duran Duran in 2017, and Sting last year. It was yet another global star Lionel Richie singing “All Night Long” this September who delighted the many boat owners and YCM members. “All Night Long” was attended by YCM President, Prince Albert II and a host of international personalities including actor-producer Samuel L. Jackson, basketball legend Magic Johnson, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and fashion designer Domenico Dolce, one of the two behind the eponymous brand D&G.
Regatta and Sports Heaven with a Golden Future
The Monaco Yacht Club from its beginnings embraced and has nurtured a prestige Regatta program that has accelerated and taken on new dimensions under Prince Albert’s Presidency.
It is worth mentioning the Primo Cup again as it has quickly established itself as the big meeting that opens the season in the Mediterranean for Europe’s one-design elite. Just a few other examples of stand-out Regattas enjoyed by YCMmembers include:
Monaco Swan One Design, (9th-13th April 2019) organized in conjunction with the Yacht Club de Monaco, was the first event in the 2019 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League.
Monaco Globe Week with the IMOCA 60 – 60-foot monohulls being among the fastest modern racing monohulls have raced on a course totalling 1,300 nautical miles embracing some of the most emblematic marks in the Western Mediterranean.
Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series offers a monthly programme alternating high level regattas and training weekends for onedesigns.
As well as the Primo Cup another innovation worth a double mention here is Monaco Classic Week. Persuaded that the reading of the past holds keys for the future Prince Albert fostered the creation and coordination during five years of a unique circuit for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts, without forgetting the acquisition of Tuiga in 1995, since becoming the flagship of the YCM. More recently the wave continued with the launching in 2005 of the “La Belle Classe” label.
The whole yachting world continues to look to Monaco to organize its most prestigious events. Within the last 12 months, 200 guests from the America’s Cup community from around the world gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to celebrate the launch of the Prada Cup – the Challenger Selection Series for the 36th America’s Cup to be presented by Prada in January 2021 in Auckland – deemed as “ the quest for oldest trophy in sport ”, the America’s Cup. Not to forget World Rowing with the Prince Albert II Challenge , a 6000m coastal race organised by the Societe Nautique de Monaco.
The Enthusiasm and Promise of Monaco’s Youth at YCM
Looking to the future is the Monaco Sports Academy which provides support to gifted young Monaco sailors and sportsmen taking on the world. The Academy is a close collaboration between the Yacht Club de Monaco, presided by Prince Albert and its General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri, and Philippe Ghanem who is an active member of the Club. They share a common goal: to help young athletes living in Monaco reach the highest level in sport.
Also founded in 1970 by Prince Rainier III, the Sports Section of Y.C.M. adapts training to youngsters from as young as age six from initiation to competition and at every age.
Look out for the Monaco Optimist Team Race from 9-12 January 2020. The regatta is reserved for 20 teams of young sailors, all under 14. YCM invites the most competitive clubs with emphasis on tactics and above all team-work.
Full of youthful energy and promise is the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge next held on 30 June-4 July 2020. The Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation organises the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge which is unique in the world.
How to become a new member of the Yacht Club
Anyone wishing to become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco needs to be introduced by two “sponsors” from YCM. The sponsor’s letter of introduction will explain the applicant’s motives for joining the Club. Prince Albert, President of the Yacht Club, presides over the meetings of the admissions’ committee. The role of the sponsor is essential. The latter, must integrate him into the life of the Yacht Club, accompany him, present him to the other members but also involve him in organized events, whether they be social or sports.
The sponsor also undertakes to ensure that his “protégé” embraces the YCM’s philosophy and values, will actively engage in the Club’s life and keep its reputation at the pinnacle.
A Regal Club and Natural Host of Prestigious Events
The Yacht club reaches well beyond being a club for owners of yachts and superyachts. It is actually an immense infrastructure akin to a multi-tiered island that organises not only events connected to the yachts and regattas but also all kind of sports and social events, dances and entertainment. High society balls, conferences, exclusive business gatherings and prestigious auctions are just part of the kaleidoscope of activity.
The members of the club and their guests have at their disposition restaurants with Michelin Star chefs (including the exclusive 1909) gyms and a library – and a spa-zone, not to mention the gorgeous pool and terraces overlooking the azure bay. There is a truly great bar, a hive of social contact, with an international reputation and winner of awards for its unique cocktails and the skills of its bar staff. Endless discovery is to be found in each private niche of this island-club.

A "Free Spirit" building designed by Lord Foster
At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.
Interior spaces
Length of the building, height of the building (sea level/terrace), an eco-responsible approach.
This emblematic building has been designed in response to the local climate and sets high standards in sustainable design that complies with HQE standards. A passive design, the structure balances shade and natural light and the glass facades can be opened for natural ventilation.
Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea water cooling systems take advantage of the sun and waterfront site. LED low energy lighting, state of the art systems to manage energy use, waste and water, and points to recharge electric-powered cars have been integrated into the design.
Account has been taken of the life-time sustainability of the building, a factor behind the choice of local materials such as the use of European oak on the terraces, isolation panels and recycled aggregates for the foundations, as well as employing local companies. The Green Building approach also aims to minimise the impact of building works on the neighbours.
ISO 14001 NORM
A commitment for the planet.
In an ongoing quest to seek solutions to the environmental problems of our time, since 1 st January 2018, the YCM has been committed to ensuring the electricity it uses comes from renewable energy sources. The initiative follows various actions already taken which include achieving ISO 14001 certification in June 2016, a management system giving the Club eco-responsible organisation status.
It is this spirit which drives the YCM’s sustainable policy, the aim being to guarantee the needs of present generations while preserving resources for future generations. This commitment to the environment determines key objectives of the environmental management system, namely to accelerate our progress on waste management, prevention and control of pollution risks, preservation of natural resources and implementation of a sustainable purchasing policy.

For sailing all year round
Sports Section
Remaining as committed as ever to its training policy, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Sailing Division, founded by Prince Rainier III in 1970, offers its members a wide range of sailing activities suited to their age, level and nautical experience.
Be it on Optimists, Bugs, Toppers, ILCA, kitesurfs and J/70s, lessons, coaching and training sessions are organised all year round by eleven state qualified instructors and coaches, whose mission is to teach them all about sailing, discovering the sea and safeguarding the maritime environment. The youngest, from 6 years old, can start learning on Bugs or Toppers.
The YCM Marina: for owners and members calling into Monaco
Located directly in front of the Yacht Club de Monaco’s new building on Quai Louis II, the YCM Marina has been in operation since October 2013. With 26 berths for yachts from 25m to 60m, the complex has a pontoon for tenders and departure point for charters. Superyacht owners will have privileged access to the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Clubhouse throughout their stay in the Principality, as well as facilities offered by BMW, the YCM’s Official Car.
Not only is this orientation towards the luxury yachting sector a big opportunity for Monaco to consolidate its position as a mecca for yachting, but also a source of direct and indirect revenue.

- Luxury Riverboats Are Giving Superyacht Charters a Run for Your Money
Once the ugly-duckling cousin to oceangoing superyachts, many riverboats now offer similar levels of luxury, comfort, and service. They can also access historic cities or remote deltas where no superyacht can venture.

With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”
This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.
One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia.
“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.
The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.
Heritage Line operates five traditionally styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small-ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”
In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”
The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.
The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian. Maybe. But being restricted to a single route on a river is also fundamentally different than port-hopping along the Med or Caribbean.
Inland cruising has multiple benefits, insists Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”
In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness area that includes a gym, spa, and guest wellness facility.
“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”
The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”
Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.
But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.
While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most scenic destinations on the planet.
