Best luxury yacht: 7 ultimate luxury cruisers you can buy

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 14, 2024

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best luxury yacht category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

The definition of the best luxury yacht will differ according to personal opinion and from boat to boat. This year’s nominees in the luxury yacht category of the European Yacht of the Year Awards proved that perfectly.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market.

The best luxury yachts

Best luxury yacht winner 2024 – arcona 50.

When you enter the fiercely competitive 50ft luxury performance yacht market you better get it right. And the jury felt Arcona managed that. This watershed design for the traditional Swedish brand, by X-Yachts co-founder and former designer Niels Jeppesen, is a big, contemporary new Arcona, one that sees it move away from its cruiser-racer heritage and classic interiors.

The on trend styling inside and out is backed up by a premium level of build and finish quality and sailing performance – particularly if you have the performance sails, traveller and deep (2.95m) keel options the test boat carried, although the latter does limit your berthing and anchoring options.

While I doubt it’ll be raced or will suit typical bluewater use, it offers a purity of performance push-button sailing: a handsome prospect upwind in a light breeze, it transforms into a powerful reaching machine with stacks of control.

As chairman of our jury, Jochen Rieker, puts it: “The boat certainly did not win for her somewhat borrowed looks. She wins by checking all the boxes in all other respects. Slipping along gracefully in the lightest of airs, holding her stride and her balance in more demanding conditions, offering warmth, light and this reassuring feeling of utter quality down below – there simply isn’t anything to fault.”

Contest 50CS

The Contest 50CS, for example, is an archetype luxury cruising yacht, one built to the highest standards and that could take you to most waters in impeccable comfort. This model is, uniquely, available in two versions: this more conventional 50CS with aft master cabin, or the forward owner’s suite version on the aft cockpit Contest 49CS . We ran a full test on the latter after spending two days aboard in the North Sea, where that noticeably high freeboard, which may not aid boarding nor windage, helped keep us dry on deck in a steady Force 6 gusting 7.

As the 50CS proved, this Judel/Vrolijk design keeps slipping along in the light stuff too, providing enjoyable sailing in 6 knots breeze under a code sail. The centre cockpit offers a deep protected guest area, but also links well to the spacious aft deck.

And the Wetzels-Brown-designed interiors of Contests today are stunning and hard to match. The engineering, access to usable stowage, details and finish on the 50CS is first class and to get this level of quality at this size is special.

Both Contest and X-Yachts are early adopters of hybrid power, offering their bluewater cruisers with optional electric drives. For the XC 47 this was designed-in from the start to offer Oceanvolt’s award-winning new 25kW regenerative drive.

The XC 47 is another wonderfully engineered and thought out yacht for distance cruising, in particular for those who also enjoy hands-on helming pleasure. That should come as no surprise to any X aficionados, but what really struck me most about this yacht was the stowage, and the forethought needed to create that, together with how practical it has been made.

That may sound slightly anticlimactic but ask any long-term cruiser and stowage is always a priority. On deck, this constitutes a huge lazarette and sail locker, plus clever systems for launching a dinghy via davits and a liferaft canister, while below decks every square inch of space has been used effectively, with lockers hinged with gas struts.

It’s clear the Danish yard went to considerable time and effort, even building a full mock up of the interior that could be canted 20° each way.

If the deck saloon style looks didn’t sell this model to all – this is the first full non-Jeppesen designed X – the jury were converted once they’d taken the helm. ‘Quirky’ became ‘muscular and bold’. The ease with which it can be sailed from the cockpit was also appreciated.

While I understand many offshore cruisers like a protected centre cockpit and more sun protection, the attention to detail, stowage and practicalities, combined with the direct steering, motion and enjoyable sailing this X offers make it a standout new offering.

Jeanneau Yachts 55

Meanwhile the Jeanneau Yachts 55 stands out for different, unique reasons in this category, offering a completely new concept in comfort on deck while at anchor and a novel accommodation layout. Its focus is on outdoor living space.

What helps place this in a luxury bracket is not simply the price or the creative input of superyacht specialist design duo Philppe Briand and Andrew Winch, rather that its layout creates a palatial amount of private space for the owner’s suite. Guest cabins have their own direct access from the extensive cockpit via gullwing doors.

It certainly makes sense for solo owners or couples using it as a warm water apartment. How many people this will suit is another question, as it segregates any guests, crew or children from the galley and saloon.

I used the term monocat when I first viewed it, as the 55 really does attempt to mix the two worlds, particularly in terms of providing owner privacy and lounging space. Choose the rigid hard top and windshield and there’s a vast amount of covered area including a dinette and chart table – plus a bimini can shade all that extensive aft deck too.

The penalty comes in additional weight and wetted surface, and is felt in the handling and performance, the latter particularly in lighter breeze with the optional in-mast furling, self tacking headsail and shallow draught package we had. However, it’s set up to be easily managed from the mid cockpit with good visibility from the twin helms and easy circulation thanks to the ramped side decks. Full report in YW February 2024.

Best luxury yacht 2023

Best luxury yacht winner – oyster 495.

It is hard to imagine that the decor of a yacht can change its look and feel quite this much, yet the layout of this second 495, Eddie Jordan’s dramatic looking Tuga , is in fact identical to the first boat that I spent several days aboard last summer.

At its heart is a wonderfully (Humphreys) designed and engineered luxury bluewater cruiser conceived from the ground up, built in a new dedicated facility to a repeatable quality very few yards are capable of.

The 495 offers consistent passage making speeds in real voluminous comfort – whether enjoyed from the deep cockpit or the best-in-class aft cabin. Deck stowage and mechanical space is also superb.

Then factor in the family appeal of Oyster’s after sales and world rally programme and you start to appreciate the premium world this sub 50-footer gives access to.

The first yacht fully conceived under CEO Richard Hadida’s reign, this is also the smallest completely new Oyster 495 since 2005 – and it’s a triumph. It was our September 2022 cover star in which we featured the full review from our Oyster 495 three day test .

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60

The Oceanis Yacht 60 is a very different beast indeed to the 62 it replaces as flagship for the Beneteau range. The yard has learned plenty from the success of the First 53/OY 54 and wanted to create a 60 in this style and with the same deck layout (albeit larger and wider) and ease of circulation.

The construction experience of the smaller model clearly helped too, as this is a whopping five tonnes lighter than the bulky OY62 and with a deeper (2.6m) keel. The telling result is on the water. It feels sporty to helm and we averaged a knot slower than the single figure 6-8 knot windspeeds upwind and matched them reaching with Code 0 and a slight swell.

The vast cockpit works well, sheltered below the semi rigid bimini, it has plentiful lounging space with sailing systems led aft to the twin helms. The interior sees a 3+3 layout, where Beneteau wanted to get rid of the corridor effect of the OY62. The galley is forward to help open out space, while the forward suite with offset berth and headboard aft works well to give space with privacy.

This is an attractive, voluminous yacht that leaves a good overall impression whether under sail, on or below decks.

Ice 62 Targa

It all looks pretty funky below decks on the Ice 62 Targa too, especially if you’re watching the masthead fore and aft cameras (plus bow and prop cam) on central displays mounted in the saloon while you slip out of the dock! The Ice is a seriously impressive, contemporary yacht, one that in looks, performance and execution, won over many of the judges.

The first to launch is a highly customised project for a passionate sailing owner who covers long distances solo – he’d already sailed it 3,000 miles around the Med that autumn. It’s impressively stiff, sails handsomely and, thanks to a telescopic keel, points well. We matched single figure windspeeds, and clocked up to the high 9s in 12 knots wind.

Umberto Felci’s team spent 4,000 hours on the design, providing lots of space and light to the interior and a chillout zone in the semi raised saloon. This was easily the coolest looking yacht, with its aggressive reverse bow, chamfered gunwales and carbon T-top bimini, and all engineered and built to a high standard.

Top 10 Explorer Yachts in the World

Exploring the seven seas on an explorer yacht is one of the most life-affirming experiences out there.

By Ellie Brade

the luxe luxury yachts

Over the past decade, the popularity of luxury explorer yachts has soared. And with good reason — is there a better way to see the world than from the deck of your own superyacht? Exploring the seven seas while authentically connecting with their natural beauty, is undoubtedly one of the most desirable and life-affirming experiences out there. Here, Ellie Brade presents 10 of the finest explorer yachts currently available for the intrepid travelers among you.

[See more: What are Explorer Yachts?]

Builder : McConaghy Year of build : 2012 LOA : 139.7 ft Number of guests: 9 Crew : 6

There is no mistaking Adastra (pictured above) thanks to her distinctive futuristic design and trimaran hull. Adastra has more than demonstrated her explorer credentials and has traveled the world, turning heads wherever she goes. Highly fuel efficient, she has a very small eco footprint, and her stable hull ensures a comfortable ride. With a trans-Pacific range of 10,000 nm she can cross the Atlantic twice before needing to refuel. An impressively shallow draft of just four feet allows her access to cruising grounds that other explorer yachts cannot visit, meaning very few places are off limits. Her 52-ft beam provides generously proportioned spaces, including the main saloon and a shaded outdoor deck. A light-filled, modern interior ensures an inviting base to conduct adventures from and accommodations include a full-beam master cabin. Adastra’s garage door folds out to create a platform for diving, and she carries plenty of toys and tenders for getting out and enjoying the water.

Adastra explorer yacht interior

A light-filled, modern interior ensures an inviting base to conduct adventures

Originally built for use in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, Adastra is at home in Indonesia’s warm waters. The archipelago of Raja Ampat — meaning Four Kings — straddles the Equator and has over 1,500 islands and islets, which surround the four main islands of Waigeo, Salawati, Batanta and Misool. Very few explorer yachts visit here due to strict regulations, and the area is largely uninhabited, meaning you will often feel as if you have the ocean all to yourself. Crystal-clear waters, endless beaches, and a variety of dive sites and reefs are all waiting to be sampled. Adastra’s draft works to her advantage here, allowing the yacht to move easily between even the shallowest of anchorages.

Start your cruise with a visit to the paradisiacal rain forest-covered island of Kri before cruising towards Gam Island, which offers incredible diving — step straight into the water from Adastra’s dive platform. Move on to Wayag Island, where you can take kayaks into the Wayag lagoon, which is mesmerizingly blue. If you’re feeling energetic, hike inland and upwards to enjoy long views across the water. Cruise through Dampier Strait and spot hundreds of manta rays before visiting Pulau Gam to try and spot the rarely sighted red bird of paradise. Diving fans won’t want to miss traveling south and visiting Misool, which is renowned for its myriad of underwater sites. Venture into the Gua Sacral ancestral caves, which were once an indigenous burial site. Kayaking through Misool’s Blue Water Mangroves, which are peppered with reefs, will have you in awe of the natural beauty.

Exterior of Octopus explorer yacht

A helicopter takes off from the Octopus landing pad

Builder: Lürssen Year of build: 2003 LOA: 414 ft Number of guests: 26 Crew: 63

One of the world’s most traveled yachts, Octopus is a groundbreaking expedition vessel that set the tone for the many explorer yachts that have followed in her impressive wake. With eight decks and at a gargantuan 414 ft, it’s no surprise that Octopus is packed with feature after feature, from a full basketball court to the entertainment-focused bridge deck. Her glass-bottomed underwater observation lounge means you can watch fish and sea creatures in their natural habitat. Huge storage capacity lets her carry no less than seven tenders, two helicopters, a submersible for eight guests and two crewmembers that’s capable of diving for up to eight hours, and even a large SUV for onshore adventures. Octopus has undertaken some truly special adventures, including recovering the ship’s bell from the wreck of the HMS Hood, cruising the coast of Antarctica and discovering the wreck of the WWII battleship IJN Musashi off the Philippines. Now, her legacy can continue with a new owner, as she’s currently for sale.

Itinerary: Patagonia

The sun sets over the horizon on one of Octopus’s many decks

Often a gateway to Antarctica, Patagonia possesses an unspoilt beauty. Ripe for adventure, it offers an incredible mix of landscapes with glaciers, hot springs, mountains, remote islands, beaches and a wide variety of wildlife. Begin your journey at Puerto Montt, which ushers you into the company of the Patagonian Fjords and Andes Mountains. Make for the Corcovado Volcano and take in the awe-inspiring National Park. Explore by tender, or even take in the landscape from above in one of Octopus’s helicopters.

The waters boast a diverse ecosystem, and you are sure to spot whales as you cruise — there are many whale research programs around these waters, and the explorer yacht’s glass-bottomed lounge provides an unrivaled view into the kingdom of these giants of the sea. Make your way to the Piti Palena Fjord, located in the delta of the Palena River — this is an excellent spot for fishing. Continue onwards to the Guaitecas Archipelago, which has eight main islands and waters famed for being home to yet more whales and dolphins. North of the archipelago is one of the world’s largest nursing and feeding grounds for blue whales — a sight not to be missed.

Exterior of The Beast explorer yacht

The Beast delivers adventure with a side of luxurious living / ©Aaron March

Builder: Profab Engineering Year of build: 2019 LOA: 128.7 ft Number of guests: 12 Crew : 9

With the  yacht’s camouflage exterior, The Beast’s owner describes her as “a little different.” What an understatement! Built to explore, and incredibly stable (no need for sickness pills on this one), this catamaran explorer-style yacht can tackle just about any cruising ground except Antarctica and has a long range of 5,000 nm. Thanks to her 39.4-ft beam, she has an incredible 4,000 sq ft of living space, elegantly fitted out with a modern interior. The Beast is packed with all the equipment needed for enjoying remote itineraries, not the least of which is a 42-ft custom composite fishing boat adorably dubbed The Baby Beast . An industrial-style, 49-ft aft deck is packed with water equipment that includes a custom amphibious tender for driving straight from water to land. A favorite spot is the upper deck with its teppanyaki grill and bar.

Itinerary: New Zealand

Deck of The Beast yacht

The Beast’s sunlit bridge / ©Aaron March

Often described as ‘the whole world in one country’ New Zealand packs a punch as a destination, delivering 9,300 miles of coastline, snow, rain forest, white-sand beaches and a rich local culture. As a relatively young country, New Zealand is a blend of cosmopolitan cities and wild, remote beauty that begs to be explored by superyacht.

Join The Beast in Auckland and soak up the skyline as you head for Great Barrier Island, where you can visit the Glenfern Sanctuary and learn about the country’s native birdlife. The island is a Dark Sky Sanctuary with incredible stars — learn about the significance of the stars to the local culture as you gaze up at the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds.

Head for the Poor Knights Islands, an incredible marine reserve, where you can make the most of The Beast’s diving setup, using The Baby Beast as a base for daily adventures. Continue north to the Bay of Islands, home to a cornucopia of marine life and more than 100 different islands; come ashore and explore the island of your choice on board The Beast’ s amphibious tender. Northland has great spiritual importance, so take the opportunity to learn about the local culture and experience an authentic cultural performance.

Cruise onwards towards Cape Reinga, the very tip of New Zealand where the Maori people believe that souls depart this life for the next, and watch the meeting of the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea, which is an unusual and powerful sight. Away from the marine reserves, make sure to take advantage of The Beast’ s extensive fishing gear Below and right The Beast ; her sunlit bridge and land some fresh seafood to cook on her teppanyaki grill for lunch. Exterior of Ragnar explorer yacht

Ragnar has been designed to look like an explorer yacht

Builder: Royal Niestern Sander Year of build: 2012 (rebuilt 2020) LOA: 223.8 ft Number of guests: 12 Crew: 17

There is nowhere on earth that Ragnar can’t take you, from glistening ice to remote desert islands. Named for the Norse King of the Vikings, Ragnar is a powerful and luxurious explorer yacht, with full ice-breaking functionality and an impressive 6,000 nm range. Ragnar is able to tackle all conditions, so make the most of your surroundings by taking your pick from her abundant toy and tender collection, with something to suit every type of cruising ground. These include an Airbus EC145 helicopter for heliskiing, a three-passenger submarine, snowmobiles, quad bikes, a 30-ft Marelli ice condition tender and more. Expansive onboard spaces include a top deck hot tub and pool, an observation deck, fully equipped gym and tranquil spa center for soaking away the day’s activities.

Although well-equipped for colder climates, Ragnar has plenty of warm destinations in her cruising plans, and 2022 will see her visit the Philippines, which is fast gaining popularity as a desirable charter location. Why? With more than 7,000 islands it is an ideal spot for exploring by yacht. Beautiful beaches and clear waters are a given, but each different island group — Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao — has its own character.

Board the yacht in bustling capital city Manila before heading for quieter cruising grounds. As you cruise towards Palawan, the largest province in the Philippines with over 1,700 islands, stop off at the hidden gem island of Busuanga and climb the 700 steps to the top of Mount Tapyas, which delivers incredible views across the region. Busuanga offers unparalleled cruising and plenty to do on land and on the water; hike through rain forests and dive the crystal waters, which are home to several wrecks. Nearby Coron has sacred freshwater lakes that are carefully maintained by the indigenous population — take a swim beneath impressive limestone cliffs that overlook the lakes.

A must-do is a visit to Palawan’s underground river, as is a stop at Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site where you’ll be able to sample what is arguably the country’s best diving. Make your way back to Manila, island-hopping as you go, and relax on board as you admire the landscape.

Builder: Admiral Year of build: 2018 LOA: 240 ft Number of guests: 12 (plus 4 staff) Crew: 20

A world-class explorer yacht, Planet Nine has a guest-centric design with edgy naval-inspired styling. She is ice-classed, allowing her to tackle polar waters, and has an MD-600N Explorer helicopter, hangar and commercial landing pad for arriving and departing in style. Abundant spaces across her five decks, which are all connected by elevator, include social areas such as the cinema room, Jacuzzi, numerous dining spaces, beach club, sea terrace and an entire owner’s deck for ultimate privacy. Three Rupert Marine RIBs are tailored for use in extreme conditions — so you can explore secluded coves or glide past ice floes while spotting local wildlife. Back on board, the observatory delivers stunning 180° views.

Itinerary: Saudi Arabia

As the spiritual home and birthplace of Islam, Saudi Arabia is rich with history and cultural significance, and has long been a center for pilgrims. Follow in their footsteps on your own journey of discovery. Explore the exquisitely blue waters of the Red Sea, seek endless sand dunes, and immerse yourself in the bustling towns and markets. Fans of diving will delight in all the Red Sea has to offer and can make the most of Planet Nine’s extensive dive gear.

Tabuk, just 62 miles off the border with Jordan, is the start of the Saudi coast and bears Egyptian and Ottoman influences — check out some of the area’s wild beauty spots and walk in the footsteps of the prophet Moses, who lived east of the city for many years. Cruise south towards the town of Al Wajh, which has over 60 miles of untouched beaches on either side. Continuing down the coast, Umluj (called the ‘Maldives of Saudi Arabia’) has 104 islands to its north. Jump on board one of Planet Nine’s RIBs and pick out your own private island. An hour inland of Umluj takes you to Harrat Lunayyir, a black lava field filled with cones and craters.

Visit Yanbu, an ancient spice trading post that was once home to TE Lawrence. A huge desert sits north of the town and gives way to the stunning ocean — a helicopter ride over the dunes will provide an unbeatable view before you touch down back on board for an aperitif as the sun sets. Round off your charter with a visit to historic Jeddah, the gateway to Mecca and crossroad of traders and pilgrims. Marvel at the beautiful architecture, visit the local souk (maamoul, anyone?) and revel in the city’s blend of old and new.

Exterior of Latitude

Latitude was built in 1973 and refitted in 2020

Builder: Hitzler Schiffswerft Year of build: 1973 (refitted 2020) LOA: 179.4 ft Number of guests: 12 Crew: 16

In beautiful condition following a mammoth two-year refit completed in June 2020, Latitude will suit outdoor enthusiasts. An expansive lineup of water toys and vast deck spaces — bigger even than yachts twice her size — will keep you outside and busy all day long. This is truly an explorer yacht for connecting with nature and discovering new and remote destinations away from the stresses of everyday life. For those looking to wind down and disconnect, she has a strong focus on wellness and relaxation with a two-tier yoga deck, private masseuse/yoga instructor and a fully equipped open-air gym. Fishing fans will particularly enjoy Latitude — her explorer qualities and hardy design can take you to remote fishing grounds where you can take your pick from her comprehensive lineup of all the latest fishing gear.

Itinerary: French Polynesia

Outdoor deck onboard Latitude yacht

Latitude has a strong focus on wellness and relaxation

Set in the heart of the South Pacific, French Polynesia is a picture-perfect destination that combines a friendly welcome with incredible diving, idyllic beaches and unspoilt beauty. Plus, there’s a string of islands for yacht-hopping. With Latitude planning to spend two years in the region, the explorer yacht and her crew will know all the best secret spots. Join the yacht in Moorea, which pairs volcanic mountains with sandy beaches.

Dive off the coast, where you’ll be in the company of Tahitian stingrays — this will be just the first encounter with impressive sea life during your time on Latitude . Cruise onwards to Huahine, which presents a beautiful backdrop for a morning yoga session. Come ashore and meet the locals, who will be only too happy to tell you stories of French Polynesia’s history.

Next you’ll visit Taha’a, a white-sand island dotted with thatched villas. There is colorful coral off the island’s shores — dive and explore before heading ashore by tender for a picnic and a walk in the lush jungle. Raiatea is well worth a visit; it is regarded as a central point in French Polynesia and is believed to be the source of many ancient migrations to countries such as New Zealand and Hawaii. Finish your visit in Bora Bora, an extinct volcano set amidst an achingly serene lagoon.

Bora Bora is known as one of the world’s most beautiful islands, and with good reason. The vibrant shoreline contrasts with the blue waters, which are teeming with fish, and vibrant hibiscus flowers carpet the side of Mount Otemanu. Make the most of Latitude’s water toys and spend the day in the warm water before a final wind down back on board.

Exterior of Yersin

Yersin is 95% recyclable

Builder: Piriou Year of build: 2015 LOA: 251.4 ft Number of guests: 18 Crew: 24

One of the world’s most sustainable and green yachts, Yersin ensures guilt-free cruising with an incredibly low cruising footprint — she is even 95% recyclable. This spectacular explorer yacht was built with science and discovery at the forefront of her design. She offers an unmatched opportunity to cruise the world and learn about its oceans firsthand. Able to travel from the Poles to the Equator, Yersin is a true explorer. There has been no compromise on comfort, and her many features include a gym, hammam, spa, cinema, dining spaces, an owner’s suite and eight guest staterooms. Thanks to her history as a luxury research vessel, her setup also includes classrooms (hello, homeschooling), laboratories, a hospital, media room and multifunction tenders. This is a unique yacht that is fully equipped to visit the most remote destinations.

Itinerary: Arctic Circle

Interiors onboard Yersin yacht

The elegant interiors aboard Yersin

Impressive green credentials make Yersin the perfect vessel for exploring the pristine wilderness of the Arctic Circle. A charter aboard this luxurious yet intrepid explorer yacht showcases the region, from epic icebergs and polar bear sightings, to fjord landscapes and fine dining beneath the shimmering Northern Lights. With Greenland acting as your gateway to the Arctic Circle, step on board Yersin in the quaint settlement of Nuuk before raising anchor and cruising towards the vast Jakobshavn Glacier in Ilulissat. One of the highlights of Greenland is the ice itself, with its pure, imposing beauty, and the town of Ilulissat, meaning ‘iceberg,’ is the obvious spot for enjoying this natural wonder.

Travel further to the impressive Eqi Glacier. From here, take Yersin’s tender to enjoy a ringside seat to witness ice calving, where new icebergs are formed as fragments of the glaciers fall into the sea. Having hiked through icy landscapes, sampled the extreme sports of glacier skiing and ice diving, or immersed yourself in the rural communities of this unique region, it’s time to depart Greenland. Watch Uummannaq Mountain recede into the distance as you take the passage to Canada’s Baffin Island. It is full of marine life, so look out for whales and seals as you cruise — they swim undisturbed by the near-silent Yersin. The coastline of Baffin Island is an excellent place to spot the most iconic creature of the Arctic region, the polar bear.

Cruise up the fjords and observe these majestic animals from the comfort of the vessel’s deck or, for a closer encounter, take a private wildlife tour with a local expert. Enjoy a lunch of fish caught fresh by the crew, and after a day in the crisp polar air, warm up by enjoying a sauna in the opulent spa.

Exterior of Bold yacht seen from above

Bold’s striking profile from the air / ©Guillaume Plisson

Builder: Silveryachts Year of build: 2019 LOA: 279.8 ft Number of guests: 16 Crew: 20

Designed by fabled aesthetic powerhouse Espen Øino, Bold has a naval-inspired design and is the biggest yacht built by Silveryachts to date. Described by her builders as “a fast, world explorer vessel with a genuine, fully-fledged superyacht finish,” Bold is the world’s fastest explorer yacht with an extraordinary top speed of 23 knots. Her low draft, unparalleled in other yachts of her size and length, also affords access to shallow waters. Accommodation is for 16 guests and includes the master suite with a private salon. Social spaces inside and out include large entertaining decks and a huge open plan ‘loft style’ main salon, with floor-to-ceiling windows that lead directly out to a large wintergarden. An outdoor cinema on the sundeck calls for family movie nights under the stars. Ready for adventure, Bold has a large inventory of water equipment including three different Rupert tenders. A heli-hangar and heli-landing deck allow the use of helicopters if desired.

Itinerary: The Whitsundays, Australia

Bold is set to return home to Australia this year for the first time since her launch — she is the largest Australian-built yacht in the world, and she will be available for charter all around her country of origin. Venturing around Australia’s expansive coastlines requires a yacht with serious muscle, and Bold more than fits the bill. Begin your cruise by heading to Hook Island where you can snorkel before traveling to Blue Pearl Bay for more world-class snorkeling off the back of Bold’s tender. Nearby Langford Island, home to reefs and coral, is another inviting dive spot. Spend some time relaxing on the island’s sandy beach before departing for Chance Bay, where you can hike along the Ngaro Sea Trail towards Whitehaven.

Cruise south to Lindeman Island, which has some beautiful national park walking tracks. Escape even further towards the seclusion of the southern anchorages off Thomas and Shaw islands. Here, you can take your pick from Bold’s toy garage and explore the anchorage. The explorer yacht will then make its way back towards Whitehaven Beach, which some claim is Australia’s finest. Take a walk inland through the rain forest and drink in the views across Hill Inlet before being collected by tender and whisked back to your floating home.

A visit to the Whitsundays wouldn’t be complete without a glimpse of the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system — a helicopter ride will guarantee the best views.

Builder: Icon Yachts Year of build: 1974 (refitted 2015) LOA: 254 ft Number of guests: 22 Crew: 28

Legend is packed with every tender and toy you can possibly imagine. Carrying submersibles, dive gear, snowmobiles, tenders, diving apparatus and more, she has something to suit every climate. Legend has extensively traveled the world, visiting Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, Northern Europe and the Baltics, moving effortlessly from sun to ice. Transformed from a Soviet icebreaker in a no-expenses-spared refit, Legend offers high luxury on board with unique features such as a waterfall-fed 16-seater Jacuzzi, 14-person cinema, Balinese spa, modern gym, piano and whisky bars. Her sheer size and impressive internal volume mean that even the longest trips at sea won’t feel claustrophobic — there’s plenty of space to both gather and retreat. For serious expeditions, there is accommodation flexibility on board for up to 10 extra expedition staff. A commercial helideck and two helicopters mean it is easy to join the explorer yacht even in remote anchorages.

Itinerary: Antarctica

The main deck onboard Legend

Journey on board Legend to Antarctica, where you’ll become one of the lucky few to have ventured 66-degrees south. Make the most of your mobile nature and get out on the water, whether kayaking through icy waters or gliding across the snow on Legend’s snowmobiles. As a Class 1 icebreaker, she can venture into pack ice sheets.

Join Legend at her anchorage off King George Island in nearby Maxwell Bay. Sail into the Bransfield Strait, passing penguins and icebergs as you go. On your first morning, a mandatory International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) briefing will outline the environmental responsibilities of visitors to Antarctica. Head for mainland Antarctica via the Gerlache Strait, spotting humpback whales along the way. The next morning, travel through the Neumayer Channel and watch calving Weddell, leopard and crabeater seals — an unforgettable sight. Legend’s crew will launch the Zodiac tender so you can cruise through brash ice for up-close encounters with local wildlife. Visit Andvord Bay to spot humpback whales and killer whale pods. Hop into the Zodiac again to visit Cuverville Island and its huge colony of Gentoo penguins. Later, drop anchor at Foyn Harbor and kayak around the wreck of the Governoren — keep an eye out for fur seals.

Cruise to Deception Island, where you can sail into the crater of a live volcano. Atmospheric whale factory ruins and the old bones of Whalers Bay hark back to the area’s past as a whaling center. Enjoy a hike up ‘The Nipple’ with views across steaming lava fields, then round off your charter with a visit to the chinstrap penguin colony on Baily Head, spotting plenty of other wildlife as you go. Disembark at Frei Station and visit the Russian Orthodox Trinity Church, where you can reflect in peace on this once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Exterior of La Datcha

La Datcha can let charter guests “set out on the journey of a lifetime to places others can’t reach”

Builder: Damen Year of build: 2020 LOA: 252 ft Number of guests: 12 Crew: 25

One of the newest explorer yachts to hit the water, La Datcha, was designed to fulfill the owner’s brief for a yacht that could let charter guests “set out on the journey of a lifetime to places others can’t reach.” The resulting yacht delivers luxury in spades and is the ultimate crossover between comfort and performance. From her head-turning profile, care of Azure Yacht Design, to countless tenders and toys including two helicopters, snow scooters and a submersible, it is near impossible to narrow down her best features. La Datcha’s six decks boast a modern interior, and when hanging out on board you’ll have plenty of options — head to the luxury spa to unwind or relax after a day of exploring in the observation lounge. Two master cabins make her ideal for two families to share her unforgettable experiences. Able to operate autonomously at sea for up to 40 days, the world is her oyster.

Itinerary: Kamchatka, Russia

Profile of La Datcha from above

La Datcha’s striking profile from above

Dramatically dubbed Russia’s ‘Land of Ice and Fire,’ the Kamchatka Peninsula lies in eastern Russia and stretches over 740 miles. With glaciers, geysers, snow and over 300 volcanoes, Kamchatka’s landscape is like nowhere else on earth. There is plenty of wildlife to spot, including the Kamchatka brown bear. Start your charter in the peninsula’s capital city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which is surrounded by three snow-capped volcanoes. Settle in on board, then fly to a nearby mountain top to ski a run or two. Cruise the fjords to reach Vilyuchinskaya Bay and fish abundant waters, whale watch or heli-ski. Enjoy incredible views from the top of the Vilyuchinsky Volcano before heading south towards Russkaya Bay. Take a helicopter flight over the Mutnovsky and Goreliy volcanoes; the brave can ski into the crater of the Mutnovsky volcano, which is home to a hidden glacier.

Back on board, your crew will take you by tender to spot Steller sea lions and sea otters. Cruise north to Cape Shipunsky and Bechevinskaya Bay, once a top-secret submarine base, and enjoy heli-skiing en route. Visit the ‘Valley of Geysers’ in the heart of Kamachatka — this spectacular Unesco World Heritage Site is home to a number of volcanoes including Karymsky, one of the most active in the world. Next, visit Klyuchevskaya Sopka and Morzhovaya Bay, home to yet more spectacular volcanoes. Round off your visit by heli-skiing on Zhupanovsky Volcano before relaxing at the Nalychevo Nature Park. Here, you can bathe in wild springs and hot thermal pools with a chilled glass of champagne in hand.

10. luxury yacht christina o (market price: $32.4 million).

Christina O deck view with jacuzzi

She may not be THE most expensive yacht in the world, but she’s certainly one of the most notable ones.

In 1954, Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis took Christina O, a former Canadian naval frigate, and turned her into a playground for the rich and famous . John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and many more have since set sail on the Christina O.

This superyacht:

  • can accommodate 34 guests;
  • boasts a massage room;
  • a beauty salon;
  • a sports lounge;
  • a glamorous dining room; and
  • a deck that turns into a dance floor.

This luxurious yacht certainly combines glamour, history and elegance. She might be out of reach for you to set sail, but you can still admire her from a distance.

9. Luxury Yacht Lady Moura (Market price: $210 million)

ladymoura luxury yacht in the world

The Lady Moura:

  • Was built in 1990 for Saudi Arabian businessman Nasser Al-Rashid.
  • The yacht’s name is carved from 24-carat gold lettering:
  • Onboard this 344-foot yacht you find a pool, a helicopter, and a 75-foot dining room table.

But the most outstanding aspect of the Lady Moura is its private extendable beach: a sand-covered hydraulic platform that extends out from the side of the yacht down by the waterline, and comes fully equipped with palm trees, beach chairs, and real sand.

8. Luxury Yacht Dilbar (Market price: $256 million)

panoramic view over Dilbar yacht

The Dilbar:

  • said to be one of the world’s largest boats at 360-feet long and 50-feet high.
  • was built in 2008 and owned by Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov.

With swimming pools, a helipad and enormous multi-layered decks that can host 20 people on each , the Dilbar is the one luxury yacht for Usmanov to cruise around his many private islands. If you already own a bunch of private islands, you might as well top that with one of the largest yachts in the world.

7. Luxury Yacht Al Said (Market price: $300 million)

al said super yacht

The Al Said houses a concert hall big enough to accommodate a 50-piece orchestra — that’s how big we’re talking. This huge luxury yacht can host up to 70 guests and a crew of 154.

The Al Said:

  • was built by Lürssen Yachts in 2008 .
  • is owned by Qaboos Bin Said Al Said, the Sultan of Orman.
  • can move at up to 22 knots and at the time of her launch was considered the world’s most powerful superyacht.

6. Luxury Motor Yacht A (Market price: $323 million)

motor yacht A luxury yacht

Motor Yacht A :

  • is 390-feet-long.
  • is one of the most unusual-looking luxury yachts on the list, but the Russian billionaire, Andrey Melnichenko, certainly likes this style.
  • it’s got a helicopter pad, three pools (one with a glass bottom that sits over the disco hall), a silver-plated staircase and a 30-foot speedboat.

The interior of Motor Yacht A covers:

  • over 24,000 square feet;
  • the master suite a whopping 2,583; and
  • houses a disco hall and six guest suites that can be converted into four large staterooms thanks to the yacht’s moving walls.

But, believe it or not, Motor Yacht A wasn’t quite lavish enough for the Russian billionaire, so he upgraded to something even more enormous, which you’ll discover below. If you’re already a billionaire, you need to own the top of the tops in terms of yachts.

5. Luxury Yacht Dubai (Market price: $350 million)

Dubai super yacht panoramic view

  • has been owned by the Sheikh of Dubai since 2006, but was originally commissioned 10 years earlier as the Golden Star by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei.

Guests aboard the Dubai will find:

  • a glass staircase;
  • a swimming pool;
  • a helipad; and
  • several jacuzzis.

The decadent interior is full of mosaics and bold colors, while the spacious deck areas create a large social area and lounge, and numerous VIP and guest suites. The Dubai can host a whopping 115 guests and is currently the world’s third-largest yacht. She definitely deserves it’s spot on the list of the world’s most luxury yachts.

4. Luxury Sailing Yacht A (Market price: $400 million)

super sailing yacht A at night

Here we are. The latest and greatest edition to the superyacht world. Not to be confused with Motor Yacht A, Sailing Yacht A is something of an upgrade for Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko .

Considered the world’s largest sailing yacht :

  • at 468 feet in length and with ship masts nearing 300-feet high.
  • has eight floors and an underwater observation room.
  • can hold a crew of 54 attending just 20 guests.
  • can also reach a maximum speed of 24 miles per hour, even with a steel hull and a teak-finish deck. It’s one serious yacht.

3. Top 3 of the world’s most luxurious yachts: Azzam (Market price: $650 million)

Azzam luxury super yacht

  • is another superyacht creation by the people of Lürssen Yachts , who claimed it was “the most complex and challenging yacht that has ever been built.”
  • at $650 million and 590-feet long, the Azzam is said to be the largest private yacht in the world.
  • can reach speeds of up to 30 knots and boasts incredibly luxurious interiors designed by French interior decorator Christophe Leoni.

2. Luxury Yacht Streets of Monaco (Market price: $1.1 billion)

Streets-of monaco super yacht luxury sailing

This yacht design has got to be one of the most absurd and unnecessary luxury items we’ve ever seen. But, hey — it’s not our $1.1 billion. As you might have guessed, Streets of Monaco is a floating replica of the city of Monaco. In the picture above you can certainly recognise the capital of the Monegasse.

Luxury Yacht Streets of Monaco :

  • was designed by Yacht Island Design of Derbyshire County in England, and is still waiting to be funded by a billionaire owner.
  • at 500-foot superyacht features the famous Monte Carlo Casino and racetrack, as well as Hotel de Paris, Cafe de Paris, La Rascasse and the Loews Hotel.
  • hosts just seven guest suites onboard, all with private reception rooms, bathrooms, dressing rooms and balconies.

The main suite is the size of a luxury penthouse, taking up three floors and 4,800 square feet. Streets of Monaco has swimming pools, tennis courts, a mini waterfall, a cafe-bar with underwater views, a helipad and submarines.

1. The top of the luxury yachts in the world: Eclipse (Market price: $1.2 billion)

Eclipse super luxury yacht Borrow A Boat

That’s right — the yacht of yet another Russian billionaire. Roman Abramovich is the proud owner of the Eclipse, which was created by Blohm and Voss of Hamburg and measures 536-feet in length.

What the yacht Eclipse has to offer:

  • disco hall;
  • two helipads;
  • 24 guest cabins;
  • 70 crew members;
  • two swimming pools;
  • a mini-submarine;
  • several jacuzzis;
  • three launch boats; and
  • is believed to have several secret exits (one might only wonder what they are used for).

The master suite is 5,000 square feet big, features bulletproof windows, and includes a private garden. This yacht even has an anti-paparazzi laser shield sweeping the surrounding areas!

Find out how the rich and famous spend their sailing holidays on their chosen superyachts.

By the way, if you’ve somehow come into a load of cash and are interested in building a superyacht of your own, you can turn to some of the best luxury yacht brands out there who task themselves with the challenge of building high-quality superyachts on a regular basis.

Big players in the superyacht game hank to their tedious dedication to quality and personalized design.

  • Blohm+Voss;
  • Bertram Yachts;
  • Benetti Yachts; and
  • Riva Yachts.

If you cannot afford to buy a luxurious yacht, you could go on a sailing trip for a week and rent of our luxurious boats instead.

What Documents Do I Need to Charter a Boat?

British virgin islands route: a 7-day boat trip in the bvi, 2 thoughts on “top 10 luxury yachts in the world”.

I love spending time on yachts during the summer, but I will probably never have the opportunity of being on one of these ten yachts. However, I would definitely choose to take a ride on the Streets of Monaco if I had the chance. I would spend my time swimming, playing tennis and, of course, taking a ride in the submarine.

These boats are beautiful, not to mention they’re massive! Holy cow, they’re very expensive too. Which is funny, because my boss would like to rent one and take all the employees on a cruise. I’d like to know how much they’re to rent.

Our client’s

the luxe luxury yachts

I recently booked a yacht charter in Miami with Myke for Father’s Day. I am from Colorado which made the process quite difficult until, thankfully, we were in contact with Myke. Myke made the yacht rental process seamless! His communication is almost immediate. Both Myke and Luis are very professional. Myke took care of everything for our yacht rental and answered all our questions. The crew on the yacht was AMAZING! My family had the time of their lives. Anytime we are back in Miami looking to rent a yacht, Myke will be without a doubt who we book with.

the luxe luxury yachts

This was my first time renting a boat in Miami and I’m sooo happy I found Myke to work with. I’ve heard so many terrible stories about yacht rental companies in Miami, especially after giving them a deposit for the yacht. I did a lot of research, and eventually found Myke. He was extremely helpful in every single aspect of my yacht charter (even getting me the dimensions of a table on the boat for a tablecloth I wanted to bring on), always responsive, and just very nice!!!! I would highly recommend this company if you are looking for a yacht rental in Miami.

the luxe luxury yachts

This company is phenomenal and made the process of booking a luxury yacht charter so easy. Vanessa helped me plan my 40 th  birthday celebration. It was a truly unforgettable experience.  I booked a 150’ yacht in The Bahamas. During my trip, we explored the Exumas. Each day was better than the day before!  My favorite part of the trip was swimming with the nurse sharks at Compass Cay. The captain and crew were also incredible. They were extremely professional and friendly. I never had a chance to even ask for anything, they were on top of everything!  I recommend using this company for your next yacht charter.

10 of the best luxury yacht cruises for 2024 & 2025

We've seen a definitive boom of yacht-style cruise ships launching over the past few years, with cruise lines keen to capitalise on the burgeoning demand for a smaller, intimate cruising experience. No longer a holiday reserved for the rich and famous, on board these superyachts you can expect sleek interiors, limited guest numbers and the ability to dock where larger ships cannot for a more exclusive experience. These are some of the best luxury yacht cruises and cruise lines offering yachts and yacht-style cruise ships.

Scenic's stunning 228-guest Scenic Eclipse and just-launched sister ship Scenic Eclipse II are certainly more reminiscent of luxury superyachts than traditional cruise ships, with cool and contemporary décor on board.

This sits alongside gadgets like a helicopter, seven-seater submarine, fleet of zodiacs, kayaks, snorkelling and scuba diving gear that allow guests to immerse themselves among the likes of Antarctica and the Arctic, as well as classic warm-weather yachting destinations like the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

2. SeaDream Yacht Club

It's in the name! SeaDream Yacht Club aim to offer an intimate, yacht-like experience - in their own words, 'it's yachting, not cruising'. This is reflected in the al fresco and casual experience on offer, with an unpretentious style - don't expect flashy interiors - and service that is second to none.

These 100-guest ships are able to access the most exclusive yachting harbours and coves across the world, from St Barths to Positano, and on board, guests enjoy the likes of Balinese double sunbeds, movies under the stars and a marina at the back of the ship with kayaks, paddle boards, a slide, jetskis and Laser sailboats.

3. Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The luxury Ritz-Carlton brand's first foray into cruising exceeded expectations with the first of their three yachts, Evrima, launched in October 2022. These superyacht-style cruises place an emphasis on cutting edge design, intimate spaces and lots of outdoor space, with just 149 luxurious suites, and offer voyages to the Mediterranean, Caribbean and beyond.

The Marina at the back of the ship offers direct access to the water, comfortable loungers, and extended wings to create even more outdoor space on what feels like your own personal superyacht. Ilma & Luminara, the second and third yachts from Ritz-Carlton, are set to join the fleet in 2024 and 2025 respectively, and are a little larger with 228 suites, all with private terrace.

4. Windstar's Star Breeze, Legend and Pride

Formerly the 'Yachts of Seabourn', these lovely little 312-guest ships offer a chance to live the yacht life, with relaxed and informal days, refined yet comfortable evenings and a friendly and welcoming crew, and a marina on the back to ensure you can enjoy the complimentary watersports when anchored in hidden bays and tiny coves.

These sociable ships have plenty of outdoor deck space, perfect for soaking up the sun in warmer destinations like the Caribbean and the Greek islands . A romantic outdoor restaurant on deck under the stars enhances the al fresco yacht feel, and guests can enjoy deck barbecues with music and entertainment.

All of Ponant's vessels offer an intimate experience but their Explorer ships , named after six of France's most famous explorers, have a real yacht-style feel, with just 92 all-balcony suites decked in a chic Scandi style, ample outdoor space and an state-of-the-art hydraulic marina at the back of the ships for easy boarding and zodiac embarkation.

The innovative Blue Eye Lounge is the spectacular centrepiece, with two oversized portholes reinforced with 18 layers of glass looking out into the deep blue sea on voyages around the world, from French Polynesia to the Norwegian Fjords.

6. Emerald Cruises

Emerald Azzurra is Emerald's first luxury yacht, with a striking profile and stylish decor, set to be joined by sister ship Emerald Sakara in 2023. The ships' intimate sizes allow you to explore smaller ports and hidden coves designed to cruise warm weather destinations such as the Dalmatian Coast and the Greek Islands.

These 100-guest small ships offer suites that almost all feature a private balcony, and itineraries have been designed to showcase smaller ports that the bigger ships can't reach, with facilities including a watersports marina, infinity pool and wellness area.

7. Four Seasons Yachts

The prestigious hotel brand Four Seasons is entering the cruise industry with Four Seasons Yachts and its first ship, Four Seasons I.

Setting sail at the start of 2026, the luxurious first yacht by Four Seasons will aim to showcase the same high-spec accommodation and exceptional service as the hotel chain in the 95 all-suite yacht, all with floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces, with fabulous dining, an exquisite spa and one of the largest pools in the cruise industry.

8. Expedition ships: Silversea

Several expedition cruise lines now also offer their fair share of yacht-like ships, such as Silversea's 100-guest Silver Origin, which feels like an intimate yacht experience as you get to know like-minded guests while discovering the fascinating Galapagos region.

Offering a similar onboard experience in Antarctica, 200-guest Silver Endeavour features state-of-the-art technology that allows for access to some of the most remote locations of the globe in a yacht-like atmosphere.

9. Expedition ships: Seabourn

Seabourn's new 264-guest Venture and Pursuit both offer sleek, modern interiors, with all veranda, all ocean-front suites and stylish dining combined with a range of equipment to help you explore, from the polar regions to the Pacific Islands, including two custom-built six-person submarines, Zodiacs, double sea kayaks, mountain bikes and e-bikes.

The cosy Expedition Lounge is the heart of the ship, with craft cocktails from master mixologist Brian Van Flandern, while the outdoor Sky Bar has two whirlpools and fantastic views of your surroundings.

10. Expedition ships: Aqua Expeditions

Aqua Expeditions offer a truly boutique feel in their luxurious superyachts. 30-guest Aqua Blu is designed to explore the Indonesian archipelago; a former Royal Navy ship transformed into a superyacht designed to explore the fascinating islands of the Indonesian archipelago include the evocative Spice Islands, Komodo National Park, with its pink sand beaches and famous dragons, and the snorkelling and diving paradise of Raja Ampat.

Aqua also offer the first true superyacht in the Galapagos: the just-launched, bijou Aqua Mare, accommodating just 16 lucky guests. She is spacious for her size and offers an amazing 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio, with watersports equipment on board includes double kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear.

The Wellesley superyacht

The luxury travel advisors at Virtuoso have named it. Now that travelers have had a taste of private yachting, they don’t want to give it up. According to insights released at Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas, private yacht bookings are up 79 percent this year compared to 2019.

As more and more people turn to chartering yachts for their vacations, the world’s finest hotels are taking note and transferring their five-star service to the water. “Luxury hotels are masters of their own environments and deliver impeccable experiences for their guests. A yachting experience enables them to add an extra dimension to their service,” Ben Casey, owner of U.K. luxury travel agency Out of this World Travel, tells Robb Report . “They become their guests’ personal tour guides in some of the world’s most breathtaking environments.”

Half-day excursions or week-long charters or available, on classic sailing yachts or elegant superyachts. For many travelers, it means taking their first steps in yachting on a vessel with the same five-star touches as their favorite land-based hotels.

Here are 13 of the best hotel-and-yacht combinations around the world.

‘Satori,’ Borgo Santo Pietro, Italy

the luxe luxury yachts

In the Middle Ages, Borgo Santo Pietro served as a place for weary pilgrims to rest. Centuries later, the sprawling 270-acre property near Florence has lost none of its healing properties. A handful of rooms and suites are set inside a carefully restored 800-year-old farmhouse and paired with Michelin-star dining, a medicinal garden, and an organic vineyard. Less than an hour away on the coast, the estate’s wooden schooner, Satori , is waiting to whisk guests away to Sardinia or Sicily. The 136-foot vessel evokes the romance of the 1920s and 1930s with touches including silverware from the era and deck chairs identical to the legendary Harry’s Bar in Venice. But the timeless aesthetic comes with a modern twist. Onboard you’ll find all the latest tenders and toys, spa facilities, and an open-air cinema. From $118,000 per week.

‘The Wellesley,’ United Kingdom & Mediterranean

the luxe luxury yachts

Before the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons got in on the yachting act, a five-star hotel in London’s ultra-exclusive Knightsbridge neighborhood purchased a classic 183-foot Oceanco superyacht to bring its brand of luxury to sea. Both hotel and yacht share the same name: The Wellesley . They also share a Roaring 20s design and feel: The cigar cabinet mirrors the selection in the hotel, as do the Hermès toiletries in the marbled Art Deco bathrooms. It’s all designed to make it as easy as possible for you to tack a charter in the Mediterranean onto a stay in the British capital without feeling like you’ve left any of the silver service and attention to detail behind. From $246,000 per week.

‘Milos at Sea,’ Xenodocheio Milos, Greece

the luxe luxury yachts

First came the restaurant: Montreal’s Estiatorio Milos  in 1976 (followed by New York, Athens, Las Vegas, Miami, London, and another New York address). Then came the hotel: Xenodocheio Milos in Athens in 2022, an opening that heralded a return to the roots of chef Costas Spiliadis. Now comes the yacht: Milos at Sea , the 113-foot Codecasa motoryacht that brings Spiliadis’s culinary philosophy to the water. On weekly charters for groups of up to 10 in the Greek Islands, local cuisine, and culture come to the fore, as does a carefully curated menu from this celebrity chef’s personal chef. Low season from $48,000 per week.

‘Major Affair,’ Anantara Layan Residences, Thailand

the luxe luxury yachts

The Man with the Golden Gun was the last James Bond novel Ian Fleming penned, but the story lives on at Anantara Layan Residences in Thailand. As part of its “Golden Gun” experience, guests fly from Bangkok to Phuket by private jet before transferring to a chauffeur-driven limo for the final stretch to the resort. Martinis (shaken, not stirred, of course) are offered up by a private butler on arrival, as is the actual golden gun from the 1974 Bond movie of the same name. It’s all designed to whet your appetite for the main course: a cruise around Phang Nga Bay, where the movie was filmed, on board the property’s sleek Sunseeker 90 Major Affair. If 007 isn’t to your taste, the yacht is available to guests for day charters and comes fully stocked with wakeboards, inflatables, and water skis to recreate your own superhero adventure. $10,000 for 8 hours.

‘Bella,’ Hurawalhi Maldives & Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, Maldives

the luxe luxury yachts

Plenty of yachts flock to Hurawalhi Maldives to drop guests at 5:8 Undersea Restaurant, an all-glass fine-dining room resting on the seafloor. But only one calls the resort home: Bella , a Princess F55 Flybridge shared between Hurawalhi and Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, the ultra-luxe sister resort next door. Captain Nasri hails from the Indian Ocean nation and, when the captain and crew aren’t ferrying guests on sunset trips to the restaurant, they are showing them the best local dive sites, searching for manta rays, or setting up desert-island picnics on day excursions. $3,000 for 2 hours.

‘Revolution,’ Puente Romano Beach Resort, Spain

the luxe luxury yachts

Puente Romano Beach Resort in Marbella already has a Six Senses spa and a two-star Michelin restaurant, so the arrival of a sleek sailing yacht to enhance the guest experience was the logical next step. Built in 1990 and restored in 2020, Revolution is a 53-foot vessel fully crewed for half- and full-day excursions off the southern Spanish coast. Guests can learn sailing and navigation basics or make a splash with paddleboards in the water while catching glimpses of the Rock of Gibraltar or Africa’s coastline. “For guests, it is a wonderful way to experience the area in the intimacy of their own private space,” says general manager Gonzalo Rodriquez. $2,000 for 4 hours.

‘Star of the Sea,’ Bequia Beach Hotel, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

the luxe luxury yachts

Bengt Mortstedt stumbled upon Bequia, a castaway island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, by chance as he explored the Caribbean on his sailing ketch in the early 1990s. He never left, founding the Bequia Beach Hotel. From just 10 rooms and a rum shack on the beach, the hotel has grown into the definition of barefoot luxury, offering suites and private villas across 10 waterfront acres. The sailing yacht has also been traded up for a classic 114-foot Benetti motoryacht, Star of the Sea . Up to 12 guests can soak up the yacht’s vintage styling on day trips or multi-day charters to chic neighboring islands Mustique and Canouan.

‘Escape,’ W Maldives, Maldives

the luxe luxury yachts

From its home base, the heart-shaped W Maldives resort island, Escape roams the crystalline waters of the North Ari Atoll. Styled like a traditional two-masted gullet, the 78-foot motorsailor first set sail in the Indian Ocean in 2022. Leisurely top speeds of eight knots keep the pace perfect for snorkeling and diving day trips, relaxed afternoons resting on the expansive sundeck, or even a romantic proposal. Two cabins make longer sailings a reality. Keeping to the W brand, the vessel comes equipped with a Bose sound system, flat-screen TVs and W’s signature beds and amenities. Overnight for $3,800

‘Vision,’ Rosewood Little Dix Bay, British Virgin Islands

the luxe luxury yachts

The island hideaway built by Laurance Rockefeller in the 1960s, Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, has hosted royalty and celebrities over the years. Now part of the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts family, the resort has lost none of its secluded allure with suites and villas concealed from prying eyes by a canopy of breezy palm trees. Vision is its 57-foot catamaran, tailor-made for dipping in and out of the BVI’s aquamarine bays. On private day sailings for just four people, you can launch onboard toys that include seabobs, kayaks, and inflatables. Larger groups can opt for an extended stay: Vision can sleep up to eight guests in four en-suite cabins. $1,500 for a half-day sail.

Private Paradise Villa, Cozumel, Mexico

the luxe luxury yachts

Private Paradise Villa in Cozumel, with its luxury villas, 25-foot waterfalls, four theaters, and heated pools, not to mention butlers and private chefs, does not have its own yacht. But it does offer something more exceptional on the sailing catamaran that transports guests into the gin-clear waters of the adjoining Marine Park. As guests soak in the water after a snorkel or swim, a butler carries a tray of drinks and refreshments from the boat, displaying the ultimate in customized service. The resort is family-friendly, with resident actors, singers, and entertainers adding to the fun vibe, but it’s also secluded enough to allow guests the privacy that is part of the resort’s name.

Four Seasons ‘Explorer,’ Palau

the luxe luxury yachts

The 11-passenger Four Seasons Explorer , which was recently based in the Maldives between two resorts, will move next month to the even more pristine island nation of Palau, with 340 volcanic and coral islands. Rather than being connected to a Four Seasons resort, Explorer is the resort, offering spa services on board, or kayaking, paddle-boarding and surfing, and of course, exceptional cuisine. It’s also a Five-Star PADI dive center that offers exceptional diving and snorkeling. Sites like German Channel offer manta rays and reef shark as well as healthy coral reefs, while the Peleliu Wall has caves and canyons, with marine life like pygmy killer whales and silvertip sharks. Onland activities like visiting cave paintings or learning traditional Palauan music are part of the charter. Explorer is available on a per-stateroom basis, or can be chartered whole.

‘Marina di Principe,’ Principe Forte dei Marmi, Italy

the luxe luxury yachts

From his rooftop restaurant Lux Lucis, atop the Hotel Principe Forte dei Marmi , chef Valentino Cassanelli’s Michelin-starred Italian fare comes with a side of sweeping Tyrrhenian Sea views. Cassanelli also plates up his cuisine at sea, with a carefully prepared menu designed for guests who charter the five-star hotel’s yacht, Marina di Principe , for the day. As the 78-foot Mazarin yacht speeds between the Tuscan coast and Portofino or Cinque Terre, you can feast on dishes such as Risotto with fresh sea urchins and Tuscan black truffle, and Grilled turbot with bbq aubergine and rhubarb. Splash some extra cash and Cassanelli can even come onboard to cook for you. From $4,300 per day.

La Guérite Restaurant, Cannes, France

the luxe luxury yachts

La Guérite Cannes on the island of Sainte-Marguerite is like a private sanctuary that provides a nice respite from the bustling city on the French Riviera. Diners can choose to look back at Cannes or out to the pristine blue Med. Accessible only by boat, La Guerite boasts one of the most authentic Mediterranean menus in the region, courtesy of Greek chef Yiannis Kioroglou. Chargrilled seafood, aromatic meats, and an impressive wine cellar are complemented by musicians who serenade diners. As a bonus, its private beach club offers true waterfront solitude.

How safe are luxury yachts? What to know after Mike Lynch yacht disaster left 7 dead

The Bayesian was a world-class yacht.

The 19th largest yacht designed by luxury Italian manufacturer Perini , it boasted a sleek interior design by French designer Remi Tessier, a double engine, and one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world. It won multiple awards, including for "best sailing yacht" the year after its release.

But, almost two weeks ago on Aug. 19, the luxurious vessel sank to the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Sicily in an internationally-followed disaster, dumping 22 people aboard into the water and leaving seven dead , including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah .

"The impossible happened on that boat," Giovanni Costantino, the yacht manufacturer's CEO, told Reuters.

In the wake of the disaster, an ongoing investigation into possible criminal errors committed by the Bayesian's crew and lingering questions surrounding its design underscore the need for proper yacht safety measures and practical ship designs, according to experts.

Italian prosecutors from a nearby town have now widened their investigation into possible criminal actions by the ship's captain in the lead-up to the shipwreck to include two additional crew members, a judicial source told Reuters on Wednesday.

Tim Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffith are now under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck, days after news broke that investigators are probing whether Captain James Cutfield committed the same crimes.

Authorities are looking into whether Parker Eaton, a ship engineer, failed to protect the ship's engine room and operating systems. Griffith, a sailor on the ship, was on watch duty on the morning the ship sank.

Cutfield "exercised his right to remain silent" when investigators interrogated him on Tuesday, Giovanni Rizzuti, his lawyer, told Reuters.

"First, he's very worn out," Rizzuti said. "Second, we were appointed only on Monday, and for a thorough and correct defense case, we need to acquire a set of data that at the moment we don't have."

Rizzuti did not immediately respond to a request for comment emailed to him by USA TODAY.

Rescuers found the bodies of Chris Morvillo, an American citizen and lawyer for Clifford Chance, his wife, Neda Morvillo, Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, inside the ship two days after the wreck. Recaldo Thomas, the ship's cook who also went by Ricardo, was the first person pronounced dead in the disaster – his body was recovered on the day of the sinking.

Captains must follow safety procedures before storms

Costantino chalked up the boat's fate to a "series of indescribable, unreasonable errors" committed by the crew. The ship's crew made an "incredible mistake" in not preparing adequately for the storm, he said.

Costantino said the crew should have summoned passengers from their rooms earlier, as the storm picked up. The keel, a heavy weight under the ship to counterbalance the ship's large mast, should have been lowered, and portholes should have been closed – both factors that could influence whether the captain is found culpable, according to experts .

Captains should always check weather forecasts and look into local weather patterns, Mitchell Stoller, a maritime expert witness and captain, told USA TODAY . When in stormy weather, captains should also weigh anchor, so that a ship can float over unstable waters, he added.

"The general standard of care in this situation is to monitor the weather, exercise caution, have a night watch, have the engine going, ready to maneuver," he said.

Wealthy clients push for impractical designs, expert says

Costantino said the ship's design and construction was error-free. But one yacht design expert disagrees.

"There's so many other factors, and this huge, complex boat is part of it," said Tad Roberts, a British Columbia-based yacht designer who has worked in the industry for nearly 40 years.

The Bayesian's giant mast is part of a trend of bigger and bigger yachts, according to Roberts. He worked on the design of the Asolare, formerly the Scheherazade – at 154 feet long, the largest cold-molded sailing yacht in the world when it was released in 2003, according to its manufacturer, Hodgdon Yacht Services. "It's small today," Roberts added.

Roberts said problems emerge when yacht designers can't say no to wealthy clients' demands for more and more extravagant and overgrown designs.

"The clients are wealthy people. They are very used to getting whatever it is they want," he said.

But owners' requests can compromise security, he said.

"Owners are not naval architects," he said. "They don't understand the issues involved, and trying to explain to them may or may not work, but there are compromises being made all the time."

Yacht buyers are more likely to get a better boat than they would 50 years ago, since yachts are exported and built towards international standards, he said. Still, the worsening effects of climate change and extreme weather are growing risks to anyone sailing the high seas, he added.

"Be aware. That's the biggest part of it," he said. "There's a possibility that things could go bad, that there is risk involved."

Yacht owners install million-dollar, AI-powered security systems

Piracy on yachts is even rarer than sudden storms – only two cases were reported between 2019 and 2023, according to the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre . Still, superyacht owners are investing in James Bond-esque technology in an effort to protect their vessels.

"There's definitely increased concern," said Frederik Giepmans, managing director of safety and security at MARSS, a technology company that offers high-tech surveillance and security systems for superyachts with a price tag "from the hundreds of thousands into millions," he said.

NiDAR, a software program manufactured by MARSS to provide protection for superyachts, can pick up on objects approaching a yacht from the air or water "while underway, at anchor and in port," according to the company's website.

The surveillance system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to handle data from sensors monitoring all sides of a vessel. The AI system provides "constant, long range monitoring of the air, of the surface, of the underwater, to try and give the crew as much response time as possible," said Giepmans.

That way, yacht owners can pick up on any manner of approaching objects, from "small, fast craft approaching on the surface" to divers and submarines under the water.

But if a threat is detected, a yacht owner's "options to respond are limited," Giepmans said. "You can get out of the way. You can bring people to safety. But, for instance, a more military response is not available to you."

Giepmans pointed to a recent increase in attacks on commercial ships, like attacks carried out by Houthi rebels on ships cruising through the Red Sea. "There's a gap there in terms of security," he said. "Because there isn't really, right now, a way for commercial or private clients, to respond, perhaps, in an appropriate way to these threats."

Luxury yacht owners cruising off the coast of Monaco, for instance, shouldn't be as concerned about a direct threat to their security, as compared with boats sailing through other locations, he said. "It really depends on that, as to what extent they will go to protect their ship."

The greater danger could come from adverse weather events, as the planet warms every year.

Meteorologists have pointed to a water spout, a tornado that spun up over the water amid the storm that hit the Bayesian, as a possible factor in its wreck.

Water temperatures in the area were more than three degrees higher than average that day, the perfect conditions for the spout to form and the likely result of climate change, Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist and former member of the Navy, previously told USA TODAY.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence. But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water," he said.

4. Grab front-row seats at the ultimate Grand Slam

The first of four Grand Slams in the calendar year, the Australian Open ought to be on any true sporting fan’s bucket list. Held every January at Melbourne Park, this tournament exhibits tennis living history in action. Over nearly three weeks of play, you'll find plenty of opportunities to watch crowd favourites and up-and-coming superstars, bitter rivalries and losses, and champagne-spraying triumphs. The finest way to attend is with an exclusive Play & Stay package, giving you access to reserved baseline seating and a luxe hotel stay between matches.

5. See Western Australia's 'Staircase to the Moon'

Visitors to Broome can imagine climbing right up to the heavens every full moon at another ‘world’s only’, found way out west. During the dry season (March to October), ocean tides here drop up to 10 metres in the evening, exposing sweeping mudflats off the coast of Roebuck Bay. As water pools along this porous surface, the moon’s golden glow reflects across the mud’s ever-changing ripples, stretching far out to sea. The result? An optical illusion of a perfectly formed, narrow staircase reaching for the horizon.

6. Walk among 600-year-old trees in the Margaret River Region

Discover Australia’s oldest forests in the far southwestern corner of Western Australia; its native karri eucalypts are some of the tallest hardwoods in the world. Boranup, just a 30-minute drive along the coast south of Margaret River, makes for the easiest access. But head deeper into the woods surrounding Pemberton to the east, and you’ll find even larger specimens reaching up to 77 metres in height and 15 metres around.

7. spend a night in australia’s most infamous prison.

Step behind the bars with a uniquely fanciful stay at The Interlude , formerly HM Prison Pentridge. Recently converted into an experiential escape, the property now houses a chef-hatted restaurant, sleek subterranean spa and 19 high-end suites, dressed in bright, modern furnishings and flanked by cool, bluestone walls. For a true historical treat, raise a glass at the wine bar, housed in the converted cell block where Ned Kelly once was held. Or opt for an ‘extended sentence’ at Adina Apartment Hotel Pentridge nearby.

Plenty of people make pilgrimage to the northernmost tip of the continent, clinking flutes of champagne as the sun sets over the Torres Strait. But why should Cape York get all the glory? The southernmost tip of Australia is one of Earth’s furthest southern landmasses, aside from Antarctica. Rug up for a day hike on the well-worn path among gentle slopes, Tasmanian bush and wild beachfront that leads to South East Cape, in the Southwest National Park. The majestic headland views make this 16-kilometre return trek well worth it. The park and track can be reached in about two hours' drive from Hobart.

9. See the opal mines and underground city of Coober Pedy

As ‘the opal capital of the world’, there’s no better place to learn about the national gemstone than South Australia's Coober Pedy. Located deep in the outback, where temperatures can reach over 40C, most homes and commercial outposts in town are dug into the ground, allowing overnight visitors a chance to sleep in naturally cool cave dwellings. It's a must-see stop along the Stuart Highway or for those riding The Ghan . Learn about the town’s more than 100 years of history at Umoona Opal Mine & Museum, then browse at local jewellers for the highest-quality opals in the world, straight from the source.

10. appreciate rich national heritage among canberra’s museums and parks.

No place covers the breadth of Australia’s culture, history and natural diversity better than the nation’s capital. Pay respects to ANZAC legacies at the War Memorial, take in the varied interpretations of icons at the National Portrait Gallery and scale Mount Ainslie for photo-worthy views over the parliamentary triangle. For an all-encompassing look at Australia’s history and geology, stop by the National Museum. And with sections dedicated to subregions throughout the continent, the National Botanic Gardens let you pack the Red Centre, Fern Gully and the tropics all into one day.

Sleek canberra stay just 10 minutes from city centre with daily breakfast, 11. dive into laidback life on the ‘islands of smiles’.

Disappear into the unknown at Tiwi Island Retreat, an off-grid paradise 80 kilometres north of Darwin. On the 11 remote isles that make up Tiwi, discover Aboriginal arts – like tutini burial totem poles not found anywhere else in the world – and unreal landscapes, like the pastel pink shores of Rainbow Beach. The fishing here is some of the best in the country – bag yourself a barramundi or threadfin salmon or learn traditional mud crab spearfishing. Best of all, the resident chef will happily serve you a supper of your fresh catch of the day, cooked to perfection.

The Northern Lights may get all the glory, but head south from May to September, and you’re in for a treat. The Southern Lights, full of warm tones including gold, orange and pink, are said to offer an even more impressive range of colour due to lesser light pollution in the southern hemisphere. While this astronomical spectacle can be seen from Margaret River to Melbourne when conditions are right, the best viewings happen in the remote southern reaches of Tasmania, like Bruny Island and protected Port Davey.

The Vietage Sit-Up Bar With View

Train travel is all the rage, with Belmond making headlines for its luxe offerings from Scotland, Italy, to Malaysia. In Vietnam, the North-South railway line courses the entire length of the coast. In recent decades, it has become a popular option for tourists to see the country while skipping the carnage and carbon footprint of flying. Now, travelers originating in both Hoi An and Nha Trang have a premium option connecting the two cities through Quy Nhon: The Vietage by Anantara . Launched in 2020 as a way to whisk guests from Anantara’s Hoi An Resort to its newest property, Quy Nhon Villas in Binh Dinh Province, the private carriage debuted its latest route in May 2024, linking the 3 cities across the approximately 315-mile route.

The clientele includes well-heeled travelers who want to skip the airport and journey in style. Couples looking to add a smart leg of slow travel to a romantic trip for their honeymoon. And slow travelers who hate the carnage of airports, and wish to reduce their carbon footprint.

To make the trip more sustainable, Anantara , a part of the Minor hotel group, has enacted a plan that includes strict waste management programs, recycling, and community support programs. Both resorts connected by train, Anantara Hoi An and Quy Nhon Villas, have received Green Growth 2050 certification, with the former receiving Platinum status (the first and only in Vietnam) and the latter earning Gold.

Train on a bend in central Vietnam.

The train staff source ingredients from within Vietnam, eschewing luxury imported foods except Wagyu beef and salmon. On a recent menu, the duck terrine featured a sauce with Da Lat strawberries and a cranberry jam infused with Hoi An spices. Fruit, vegetables, and herbs, along with seafood come from the local fields and waters around Quy Nhon. Teas and coffees are sourced from local, ethical brands from Vietnam, while the still and sparkling water is filtered, carbonated, and bottled at the on-site plant at Anantara Hoi An. Waste and scraps return to Hoi An in the evenings to be segregated into either recycling, compost, or general waste. Anantara’s zero single-use plastic policy applies to The Vietage, too.

Finally, the Dollars for Deeds program donates $1 per ticket to The Kianh Foundation, a not-for-profit charity providing a full-time, customized, special needs curriculum for children with disabilities in the Quang Nam Province of Central Vietnam. Of course, train travel in and of itself, limits one’s carbon footprint as compared to air travel. (Read more about sustainable travel here .)

The interior car on The Vietage.

The Vietage covers an approximately 330-mile span of Central Vietnam, connecting Hoi An, Quy Nhon, and most recently, Nha Trang. Through big picture windows, guests watch rural life unfurl as the train phases through thinning cityscapes into an emerald-hued countryside of rice fields cut by rivers and ponds. Motorbikes pile up at railroad crossings; sampans, or traditional wooden fishing boats, traverse rivers, and waterways; farmers donning conical nón lá hats made of woven leaves, work the fields planting rice–or is that the Vietnamese version of a scarecrow in a red cotton shirt and hat?

The Vietage around a bend in Vietnam.

Forested mountains offer a scenic backdrop, hinting at the hinterland’s topography, while red brick towers rising from distant fields inform its history. The region, along with nearby swaths of Laos and Cambodia, was once was once the domain of the forgotten kingdom of Champa, the towers, its former citadels and temples. At its peak between the 7th and 10th centuries, the Cham controlled key routes of the spice and silk trade, eventually falling to the Vietnamese in the 1400s.

Each of the two carriages features six private compartments with two seats (or one sleeper on the night journey) to accommodate a total of 12 passengers. Gray upholstered banquettes framed in dark wood are partly shielded by rattan cane screens and thick cream-colored curtains. The elegant design pays a nod to Indochine style, thanks to Hoang Le Ha, director of ShapeUs Studio in Ho Chi Minh City. Each booth has an international electrical outlet and large picture window. The well-appointed bar car features a semi-circular stone slab framed in black leather stools.

Dinner of beef and wine on the Vietage.

Morning travelers heading south on the route from Hoi An to Quy Nhon enjoy a light breakfast of warm pastries including croissants and pain au chocolat served with local coffee or tea. A few hours later, staff pre a three-course menu selected in advance. Dishes take inspiration from regional flavors and ingredients such as Quy Nhon seafood salad with green papaya, carrot and mint, and a green bean and quinoa salad peppered with lemongrass, tofu, peanuts and Hoi An chili sauce.

Mains include Hoi An chicken rice, and a braised wagyu beef neck accented with local vegetables of carrots and zucchini with green tea and sesame jus. Desserts infused the flavors of Vietnamese fruits like a dragon fruit compote atop a passion fruit tart, and strawberries sourced from the famous mountain city of Da Lat, served with coconut yogurt and local basil.

Wines by the glass range from a sparkling from Australia, Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, Chardonnay from Chile, and an Italian Primitivo. Spirits enthusiasts can dive into a selection of Vietnamese gins highlighted through specialty cocktails, a gin and tonic, or simply neat to sip and explore. Guests looking to bump up their wine experience can select from a reserve bottle list featuring Champagne, white Burgundy, Barolo, and Bordeaux.

The Vietage Bar Car.

As far as amenitites, it’s a trainn car, so it’s light on extras—but a small massage room provides a moment of calm while guests receive a 15-minute shoulder and back rub in a kneeling chair. Beneath the seat is a box with blankets, a neck pillow, and slippers. Complimentary Wi-fi keeps you connected, though you’re better off living in the moment by disconnecting.

Anantara’s The Vietage makes two trips daily, a morning run, and an evening route, linking Hoi An and Nha Trang, while stopping at Dieu Tri Station outside the port town Quy Nhon, along the way.
