But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Triple Seven

Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Triple Seven (777), built in 2006 by German shipyard Nobiskrug, is an unassuming superyacht with an abundance of outdoor spaces and a minimalistic interior. With a steel hull and GRP superstructure, she features interior and exterior design by Newcruise. This impressive vessel measures 66.7 metres and can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Motor yacht Triple Seven is the first collaboration between her commissioning company Kristal Waters, Nobiskrug and her design team who have gone on to build her larger sister ship Siren. Her unusual name originates from her shipyard build number 777, a lucky combination in her native Germany foretelling great success and satisfaction.

Triple Seven (777) is a complete custom yacht built for owners based in London and the Côte d’Azur who began their yachting ownership with open sports boats only to move to owning two custom motor yachts. With a bulbous bow and narrow entry, Triple Seven is manages to achieve both efficiency and attractive aesthetics.

The tri-deck luxury superyacht was built on a briefing specifying lengthy, elegant lines and interior spaces that flow seamlessly from generous outside areas that are almost rooms of their own. The interior was based on a portfolio of owner’s sketches, collected from his favourite viewings at a variety of boat shows.

Further drawing on the name Triple Seven, the interior design of the superyacht features many details formed around the numeral. Particularly of note are the seven bullet-proof forward-facing windows on the main deck whose unique shaping makes them appear almost as giant sevens while also allowing huge amounts of light into the owner’s suite.

The owner’s suite is highly innovative and includes a separate office/library with a hidden fold-out bed that allows it to turn into an extra cabin when needed. The suite also hosts a hidden security closet, and his and hers dressing areas that are connected by an immense bath carved from Portuguese marble.

Etched sevens can also be found subtly adorning a floating spiral staircase in the yacht’s centre.

Spaces are large and airy within the super yacht’s interior. The main salon is one unbroken space that extends from the foyer to the aft deck where a large circular bar occupies most of the aft end of the main deck. The bar features a glass wall behind that drops down to allow service to both the salon and the aft deck and creates a space occupying almost one-third of the yacht. Divided into six usage areas, this space encompasses the bar, a formal seating area, outdoor cinema, open sun-pad lounge, a dining area and a casual lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows.

The sun deck is completely open except for a dayhead and emergency generator room and hosts a retractable gazebo with tables for alfresco dining. Its most spectacular feature is found forward, a large circular sun pad that tops the coachroof and is convertible into a helipad with a certified 18-ton crash load. Aft brings a large Jacuzzi surrounded by more sun pads. Located mere steps from the water and astern of her tender garages is a fashionable beach club; a teak space equipped with a gym, lounging area and bar.

Featuring a dedicated crew, Triple Seven is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at 15 knots while her crew of 17 ensure the needs of every guest are met.

The luxury motor yacht is equipped with an armada of water toys to provide endless entertainment during any yacht charter. Onboard water toys include two tenders, Jet Skis, water skis, kayaks and a range of scuba equipment.

The luxury motor yacht won the award for “Best Power 43m+” at the 17th International Superyacht Society (ISS) awards for design, leadership and distinguished crew 2007 at Fort Lauderdale.

10 of the most impressive superyachts owned by billionaires

10 of the most impressive superyachts owned by billionaires

From a sailing yacht owned by a russian billionaire industrialist to the luxury launch of the patek philippe ceo, here are the best billionaire-owned boats on the water….

Words: Jonathan Wells

There’s something about billionaires and big boats . Whether they’re superyachts or megayachts, men with money love to splash out on these sizeable sea-going giants. And that all began in 1954 — with the big dreams of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

Onassis, keen to keep his luxury lifestyle afloat when at sea, bought Canadian anti-submarine frigate HMCS Stormont after World War II. He spent millions turning it into an opulent super yacht, named it after his daughter — and the Christina O kicked off a trend among tycoons. To this day, the world’s richest men remain locked in an arms race to build the biggest, fastest, most impressive superyacht of all. Here are 10 of our favourites…

Inside the epic voyage of 45m Dorothea III

The owner of superyacht Dorothea III has never been keen on following the milk run, but his latest 20-month cruise pushed the boundaries of tandem yachting further than ever before. Ambassador Steven Green and Captain John Crupi, a panelist at year's Explorer Yachts Summit , talk us through the epic journey that won the 2020 Voyager's Award .

‘One yacht good, two yachts better,’ was the mantra that Ambassador Green and his long-serving captain John Crupi adopted when planning their latest two-year adventure, which incorporated two Atlantic crossings, circumnavigating South America and crossing the Pacific.

Not content with just setting forth with the faithful 45 metre Cheoy Lee Dorothea III, who has cruised more than 170,000 miles during the Green’s ownership, they decided that GT63 Hatteras Post One, should also join for the adventure. A feat that as far as the duo are aware has never previously been attempted.

The route – which saw the Green family spend time in Central America, The Azores, Portugal, Cape Verde, Brazil, Patagonia, French Polynesia, Tonga and Australia – was dictated by several criteria. “We try and orientate ourselves around land activities for the family and fishing for me,” explains Ambassador Green, who served as the US ambassador to Singapore under President Clinton.“I also said once I turned 65, which was ten years ago, I didn’t want to ever live in a place where the temperature [in Fahrenheit] was below my age. So, we were trying to find places that were in the warmth and sunshine.”

With all this in mind Post One seemed like the obvious addition to the trip. “My grandson and my son in law like to fish but my daughters and my wife don’t, so they spent more time on Dorothea ,” he explains.

Having both boats may have been the dream for family dynamics but for Crupi it presented the monumental technical challenge of how to allow the sportsfish vessel to “run on her own bottom” during a global voyage, with three ocean crossings. “The logistics surrounding it were intense because the cruising schedule was pretty aggressive,” says Crupi.

Post One underwent modifications during her build – including more robust pumps, additional fuel transferring systems, and state of the art electronics – but Crupi still had to work out how to refuel underway. “It is not something you can Google or ring somebody else and get advice on,” he says. “We tried a variety of methods of positioning both boats in different sea states and in different winds and currents until eventually we found a recipe that worked. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. For a total refuel you have got both boats sitting at roughly ten metres apart, for upwards of an hour and twenty minutes, in any sort of seaway.”

Crupi also hired a captain and deckhand specifically for Port One. “They had to be on board 100% because at the end of the day we are sort of living in luxury and they are pounding their way across the ocean. It has got to be something that you want to do it’s not something you can pay somebody to do,” he adds.

The voyage started close to home in February 2018, visiting Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Bermuda before embarking on the first Atlantic crossing in July. With four refuels completed on route, Post One is thought to be the first ever sportsfish vessel of her size to complete the crossing. The duo successfully arrived in the Azores ten days later.

Crupi had scheduled in time to visit six of the nine Atlantic islands, which proved to be one of the biggest surprises of the entire trip. “We loved the Azores, we thought they were one of the most beautiful places we had been,” enthuses Ambassador Green. “The people are great, the food is wonderful and we would definitely go back. It’s basically a fuel stop, which is just so strange because the cruising is absolutely wonderful.” Crupi was also taken aback by what the Azores had to offer. “The thing that really surprised me is that 80 percent of the boats coming from the States to the Med every year stop there but nobody does any trips,” he agrees. “We were only the second or third boat that our agent had put together some kind of cruising itinerary for and he deals with practically every yacht that comes through Horta.”

After the Azores the Greens enjoyed two more trips on the other side of the Atlantic, taking in Portugal’s southern coast and the rich fishing grounds of Cape Verde, before Dorothea and Post One embarked on the South Atlantic crossing to Brazil, via Ascension Island. “You might have said you were in the middle of nowhere before but unless you were on Ascension you were lying,” jokes Crupi.

The 91 km2 volcanic island – which is 860 nautical miles from the coast of Africa and 1,200 nautical miles from Brazil – nearly put the entire voyage in jeopardy. “The communication with the island is horrible, basically an email every other week, but we had managed to pre-order about 25,000 litres of fuel,” says Crupi. “Then one day away from Ascension I gave the harbour master a call and he said that because the ship that normally comes from the UK three times a year was only going to be able to make it twice they wouldn’t be able to give us the fuel, but they were happy to give us back the money. It wasn’t much comfort when I was basically two thirds of the way to Brazil with two boats and the fuel that we were reliant upon was now in question.” Thankfully, Crupi was able to negotiate getting a portion of the fuel and, after the 18-day crossing, both yachts arrived in Brazil at the end of November.

The Greens flew to meet Dorothea there, spending time in Rio, Buzios for the New Year celebrations and Ilha Grande. One of only a handful of yachts to visit the country, it came with a unique set of challenges “Brazil is a beautiful country with wonderful people. We enjoyed interacting with the Brazilians and we loved visiting some of the more scenic places, but it is a place where you have to be careful,” says Ambassador Green. “It was one of the few places in the world where you had to have security 24 hours a day on the boat.”

As the captain, Crupi also felt the pressure. “Being there with two boats and a high profile obviously put us on high alert,” he says. “It was my first experience of dealing with armed security on the boat and all of the precautions that you have to put in place become fatiguing for a boat crew.” Despite this Crupi doesn’t think yachts should be put off visiting. “Brazil is beautiful and could and should be done by a lot of boats,” he says. “We were the first boat to cruise southern Brazil in three years and you are talking about a country that has got 6,000 miles of coastline.”

Dorothea III is no stranger to visiting less economically developed countries and has an established philanthropic programme, including delivering supplies after hurricanes and supplying educational materials and water filtration systems on previous trips. “Philanthropy is very important and what I love is that my crew also think it is important,” says Ambassador Green. “It’s important that if people in these communities see a big yacht pull up, they feel that they are interested in the community or the tribe.”

During this trip the crew decided to develop the programme further with the launch of the Marlin Mission, which invited people to pledge a donation for each fish they caught and released. The campaign saw them raise nearly $30,000 dollars, which they used to purchase school supplies for under privileged children in Cape Verde and Brazil. “It gave us the ability to really do some stuff,” says Crupi. “In Cape Verde for example we took twenty-five children to the optometrist. Some of them were nearly blind and they put glasses on them and for the first time they suddenly realised that a tree wasn’t a green blob.”

After their time in Brazil the two boats temporarily parted company, as Post One was shipped to Panama and Dorothea headed south to explore Chilean Patagonia. Once there Crupi was relieved that he only had one yacht to take care of. “From a navigation standpoint Southern Chile was a disaster because their charts are not corrected to WGS84, which is what we use for digital cartography,” he explains. “Anything that you plot on paper and correspond to anything digital is just way off. As a result the paper charts are more like treasure maps and digital doesn’t really work.” Despite the navigational challenges Crupi was blown away by the destination. “Patagonia was unbelievable,” he says. “Having spent a lot of time in Alaska I am used to colder destinations, but Patagonia has a completely different feeling.”

The two yachts were reunited in the Galapagos before both heading into the more familiar territory of the South Pacific. “We have made multiple trips to the South Pacific because we love it there,” says Ambassador Green. Highlights of this voyage’s trips included swimming with whales off Tonga, visiting an active volcano in Vanuatu and spending time with local communities. “The grandkids really enjoyed interacting with some of the small islands in Tonga. says Ambassador Green. “On one island they visited a school and set up a volleyball net. It is a great lesson for my grandchildren.”

In October in 2019 Dorothea III and Post One arrived in Cairns Australia, marking the end of the voyage. “It’s pretty crazy that we were able to do it,” reflects Crupi. “When you think of all the things that could have gone wrong, from a mechanical standpoint, from a weather standpoint, from just a you are in a 60ft [18.2m} boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean standpoint. It’s pretty extreme, looking back at it.”

Having spent more than twenty years together, Ambassor Green credits his captain as the reason things didn’t go wrong. “When you do a trip like that, taking a fishing boat across the Pacific, it takes meticulous planning,” says Ambassador Green. “John is a great planner and a great executor of the plans he makes. It’s a very interesting thing to do but you want to have a competent captain.”

With long haul flights becoming an increasingly unattractive option for the Ambassador and his wife, he is realistic that this might be his last great adventure with Dorothea III, who is now for sale . “Most people say that the two happiest days of their life are when they buy and when they sell a boat,” he says. “For me it will be a very unhappy day when I sell. We have enjoyed every minute of it, there is just no way to rewrite these memories.”

Captain John Crupi will be speaking on a panel at this year's Explorer Yachts Summit , unpacking owners' obsession with cruising high latitudes and predicting where we all might be adventuring next.
