Three SDYC members recently competed in the International 14 Worlds in Torbole Italy. Cameron Puckey on his Hollum designed I-14 and JP Barnes sailed with me on my Bieker 6 I-14.
The 2024 International 14 World Championships were held on Lake Garda in Torbole Italy. Torbole is next door to the better known Riva Del Garda. Both clubs sail on the same water which is on most all sailors bucket list of locations to sail, certainly in the skiff sailing crowd. Seventy boats from six different countries were present.
The 7th annual San Diego Olympic Classes Regatta (OCR) rolled out on a perfect June weekend. The classic San Diego "June Gloom" burned off quickly and a nice westerly filled in for the majority of both days. With winds ranging from 7-14 kts, and modest little swells running down the course, 28 sailors in three classes completed seven races on a trapezoid course located just south of Point Loma on the Coronado Roads.
We are excited to announce that registration is now open for the 2024 INSA Junior Sabot Nationals, which will be held at San Diego Yacht Club July 29 through August 1! Make sure to register online before 1700 on June 14 to avoid late entry fees.
For the first time since 1962, the INSA Junior Sabot Nationals is returning to SDYC, making it an unprecedented event in the modern history of the Junior Sabot Nationals. While this marks an exciting new development for the Sabot Fleet, it is also a return to form in many ways, with a qualification series limiting the championship series to 120 boats and the Cove Cup Consolation Regatta.
San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) is excited to invite members of the International Star Class to compete at the Star World Championship in San Diego, CA with racing from September 8-13, 2024. SDYC has previously been host to the regatta in 2013, 1994, 1973, 1969, 1961, 1958, 1940, and 1938, making 2024 our 9th edition. Co-Chairs Traci Miller and John Burnham and the Star World Championship Committee are committed to making this championship a top-notch experience for sailors and spectators alike.
As a blustery weather front cleared Sunday morning to reveal clear blue skies and white caps at sea, sailors on the final day of Yachting Cup were excited to get out on the water in some 'sporty' conditions.
What's Yachting Cup without on the water fierce competition, tasteful strategy, and a hint of chaos? The outside courses on the Coronado Roads gave way to quite the interesting turn of events for some. Though the course was square with light and shifty winds, there was still plenty of energy in the air to create that chaos.

The first-ever race of the new Coastal Pointscore series kicked off with the Lion Island Race (part of the Club Marine Ocean Pointscore) on Saturday, 14 September. In a competitive start at 11:35 AM, Smuggler , skippered by Sebastian Bohm, led the charge out of Sydney Heads, setting the pace for the fleet. With steady winds building throughout the day, Smuggler claimed victory on handicap with a corrected time of 5:30:06 after just over four hours of racing.
Odin, skippered by Matt Hanning, took second place with a corrected time of 6:01:53, while Ragtime , helmed by Steve Watson, finished third in 7:20:08. The rest of the fleet, including Jupiter (DH) and Cyrene 3 , battled in the dying breeze as the afternoon turned to evening, rounding out an exciting start to the Coastal Pointscore.
The series continues with more challenges ahead, as boats prepare for the next coastal race, Flinders Islet Race (part of the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore)
