Rent a Boat in Athens and Open New Greece

Traveling by sea is an excellent option for everyone who is tired of traditional vacations or being tied to one certain place. When you select a water vehicle, you receive a unique opportunity to visit a lot of wonderful and unique locations and, additionally, enjoy beautiful views, which can only be seen from the sea. Moreover, you are free to organize your own resort on your boat , playing favorite music at full volume or relaxing in silence, which will be interrupted only by water lapping and seagulls. And even more amazing is the possibility to swim in clear waters of amazing remote bays far away from crowded beaches.

General Information

If you are interested in this exclusive way of spending holidays in Athens but don’t have your own boat or don’t know where to rent one, this is not a problem. Thanks to the qualitative rental service provided by 12 Knots in Athens , everyone has a chance to rent a water vehicle and enjoy sailing vacations. The rental agency 12 Knots successfully runs its business since 2009, and it is a leading charter broker facility. This company is quite famous for offering only rental services but also a sailing school. It is possible to find 12 Knots Club’s representatives in more than 36 amazing locations all around the world. You can choose any destination, from the Bahamas to Rhodes. One of the most popular placements for sailing is Athens , Greece .

Why You Should Choose Athens for Yacht Charter

A lot of tourists, as well as locals, choose Athens for their traveling by boat . The popularity of this location is understandable – you can see all showplaces in Acropolis (for example, Parthenon and Daphni Monastery), visit interesting excursions, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Old City. After that, you take a boat at the local port and go to explore the stunning surroundings of Athens and small islands , which are no less stunning than the capital of Greece is. In addition, thanks to the city’s settlement, you have a chance to sail in the Sardonyx gulf and the Aegean Sea. Moreover, sailing conditions in these waters are great. The Aegean Sea is considered to be the calmest sea in the world. Additionally, you will be pleasantly surprised with the cloudless weather but still mild climate.

The Best Time for Sailing Vacations in Athens

The best time for sailing vacations in Athens is a period of a warm half of the year. The most popular season for sailing is the second half of spring, the summer months, and the first half of autumn. The winter season is not appropriate for sail because of the windy weather at sea.

Difficulty Level

12 Knots takes care of customers regardless of their experience and skills in shipping. Therefore, it is possible to either crewed or bareboat yacht. The first option is obviously suitable for newbies or those who want to relax and forget about any difficulties. At the same time, experienced users select a bareboat charter in Athens . In this case, one should know that there could be problems with vehicle driving. The sea is unpredictable; so, you should be ready to cope with stormy weather. Therefore, do not choose a bareboat charter in Athens for the long term if you do not have enough experience in sailing . If you are an experienced captain and have a plan to visit other European coasts, then do not forget that you need to have an international sailing certificate like RYA Day Skipper, IYT Bareboat Skipper, ASA 104 plus IPC.

Of course,  sailing  vacation takes a little more effort for its qualitative organization. However, 12 Knots Yachting Club assures stable support during the booking procedure as well as the vacation period. More often, difficulties are related to the transfer activities in unfamiliar locations. So, it is convenient to select the option “Transfer on request” from the list of additional services. In this case, you will save your time and energy.

Main Charter Bases

12 Knots has many charter bases to ensure clients’ convenience. Main stations are:

What Vehicle Type to Select If You Rent a Boat in Athens

Sail yachts

The most popular vehicle for charter is a sailing yacht . 12 Knots team offers a great number of these boats – 1545. This vehicle assures your comfort and safety in both long-term travel and a day trip. Thanks to the wide variety of options, you can choose a yacht in accordance with your preferences and plans. For instance, if you are going to travel with friends, you can choose Maxus 22 Prestige, Sun Odyssey 32i, or Elan 333, which have 6 sleeping places. However, if you want to spend a weekend with your date, a boat with 1 cabin would be enough.

Powerboat is the best variant for tourists, who want to visit as many places as possible but do not have a lot of time, and those who prefer speed. Motorboats of all sizes with a professional crew are available for booking as well.

You can select one from 641 catamarans offered by 12 Knots if you are not planning a long-term trip. A catamaran is a perfect option for a picnic, fishing, and other outdoor activities with your family and friends. When you rent a catamaran, you receive a comfortable compact vehicle. In addition, a catamaran is quite easy to operate; so, you can practice and improve your driving skills.

Gulet  rent  is appropriate for big companies and long comfortable trips. 12 Knots Club proposes 13 types of gulets. The greatest of them are quite big. For example, Cosmos has a length of 24.8 m, Aphrodite is 25 m, and M/S Harmonia is 26 m. The offered gulets can place from 5 to 20 people.

Additional Travel Information

All offered boats are serviceable and insured. In addition, you can buy additional insurance (Damage Waiver) to minimize your liability.

Charter a luxury boat in Athens with Arthaud Yachting

Rent a luxury yacht, a catamaran or a sailing yacht in athens.

With its Neo Tavernas, vibrant quaint districts, modern coffee shops and exquisite food culture, Europe’s oldest capital city, Athens, is a far cry from what it was 3400 years ago. Athens today is a cosmopolitan city overflowing with culture, food, art and history. Head into the Koukaki district, (Vogue’s ‘new cool neighborhood’) for brunch before exploring the galleries and museums nearby. Brace yourself for a strong cup of greek coffee before time traveling back in history as you step into the historic core and place your feet on the very ground that Socrates, Plato and Aristotle stood on. All of this set into a paradise of coastline with thousands of islands, beaches and deep blue waters to explore on your Athens luxury yacht charter.

Practical information to visit Athens

When to visit athens by yacht rental.

The best time to rent a yacht, catamaran, or sailing yacht in Athens is April to June or September to October. During these months there is sunshine without the unbearable temperatures in the height of summer and of course much less tourism. This will make your charter and site seeing in the area much more enjoyable. July and August tend to be very hot and overcrowded, there may also be strong northerly winds that can affect yachting mobility. Arthaud Yachting has a wide selection of yachts, sailing yachts and catamarans available to suit your needs.

Best cruising areas on the coast of Athens

With thousands of Greek islands at your disposal, there are endless options during your luxury yacht charter in Athens. Discover the fascinating Saronic Islands, situated in close proximity to Athens, these 7 islands offer incredible beaches and phenomenal history, stop by Aegina Island for a glass of local wine whilst tasting their famous pistachios, take a horse drawn carriage around the tranquil island of Spetses or simply spend the day exploring the private islets and coves of the Argosaronic Gulf.

Do not miss when traveling to Athens

The Acropolis is the heart of Athens and is renowned worldwide for its historical importance. This fortified limestone plateau houses multiple awe-inspiring monuments, including the famous Parthenon, the site where Greek philosophers would question the universe and where democracy and freedom of speech were born.

After visiting this incredible site head over to the Acropolis Museum to gain further perspective and insight into these amazing monuments. Once you’ve completed the tour of the museum head to one of the many hotels that have rooftop restaurants or bars that offer incredible views of the Acropolis for sunset. The ‘A for Athens’ bar overlooks the bustling streets of Monastiraki Square, with views of the Ancient Agora and The Acropolis in the distance.

Breathtaking dining experience in Athens

For a modern take on traditional Greek seafood head to Varoulko Seaside restaurant in Mikrolimano. Set on an oceanfront, it is the perfect place to enjoy some delicious fresh fish. We highly recommend ordering the Chef’s catch of the day and pairing with a light white wine. Perfect after a luxurious day on your chartered yacht.

Hytra Restaurant’s roots are embedded deep within the rich cultural heritage of Greek cuisine. Their modern take on traditional Greek flavors is truly magnificent. Everything on the menu is excellent which is why we recommend the Chef’s tasting menu with optional cocktail or wine pairing.

Both of these highly sought after gourmet restaurants have long waiting lists for reservations but with Arthaud Yachting’s private concierge service you will always have a table.

Athens best local dishes

While in Athens you’ll notice many fish ‘tavernas,’ the area is known for its mouth watering fresh fish dishes. Usually made with minimal ingredients the fish is the star of the dish. Add a squeeze of lemon and a dash of olive oil and pair with a dakos salad and a glass of white wine. The Varoulko Seaside restaurant is our favorite.

The traditional greek meze is a number of small plates similar to tapas. They often include homemade flatbreads, yogurt dip, olives, fried cheese, zucchini balls and small seafood bites such as steamed mussels or squid. It can be shared as a starter or had as a light snack. ‘To Kafeneio’ is known for their amazing meze dishes.

Baklava is a sweet Greek pastry that truly is a work of art. It consists of layers of ultra thin pastry with butter, chopped nuts and honey. Best served warm fresh out of the oven.

The local culture of Athens

While the Acropolis is a popular tourist spot during the day, it also houses an incredible amphitheater that comes alive at night. A perfect end to your day on your chartered yacht. The Herodeon is a Roman amphitheater that was built by Herodes Atticus for his Roman wife in 161 AD. In the evening it transforms into a music venue, with its amazing ancient acoustics and design. A night concert here is one of the best ways to experience the culture of Athens.

Take a wander through the Athens central market, Varvakeios Agora is on Athinas Street and has been active since 1886. With almost every greek ingredient you can imagine the locals come to do their food shopping here. There are some small restaurants and kiosks in the market where you can stop for a coffee and a pastry

Best beaches in Athens accessible from your private yacht

Mersini Beach- Polyaigos Island. Located South East of Paros and Naxos Islands, is the largest uninhabited island in all of the mediterranean. Mersini Beach can be found on the east side of the island and can only be reached by boat. A perfect way to spend your day on your Arthaud luxury yacht or catamaran rental. Pristine clear waters and beautiful natural sand awaits you. The island also has an incredible reef connecting it to the neighboring island of Manolonisi, a great place for fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Livadi Beach – Donousa Island. Situated just west of Naxos Island, this amazing secluded beach is on the south east of the island. Drop anchor here and enjoy a healing swim in the beautiful turquoise waters of this paradise. The beach is an undiscovered gem but is widely known by the locals for its pure natural beauty.

Love Bay – Poros Island. One of the beautiful Saronic Islands, where the name says it all, this is an intimate romantic beach that is surrounded by nature, with a quaint beach bar and crystal clear waters. This beach is a perfect place to bring a loved one and enjoy a day in paradise together.

Aponisos Beach – Agistri Island. This beach is known for being one of the most exotic beaches in all of the Saronic Islands, the white washed rocks and pine trees that surround it create an incredible place for swimming and snorkeling.

Arthaud Yachting’s recommendation

Discover the Island of Hydra from the comfort of your luxury yacht, one of the most picturesque islands in all of Greece. The charming port offers a selection of sophisticated boutiques and many elegant bars, cafes and restaurants. Take some time to wander the back streets of the island before a delicious seafood lunch overlooking the marina. Circle round to the east side of the island to enjoy an afternoon swim in one of its many private coves, followed by a sunset to never forget.

No matter where you decide to sail in Greece, you'll be surrounded by captivating history. Many of the islands have ruins and archaic sites to view. One of Greece's most famous historical sites is the Acropolis in Athens. This citadel is home to some of the most iconic structures in Greece, including the Parthenon and the Erechtheion.

Athens is also home to many other famous sites, such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Agora. The capital also has a vibrant modern culture, with plenty of museums, shops, and restaurants to explore.

Four Reasons to Charter a Yacht in Athens for a Week

1. idyllic climate.

Athens’ Mediterranean location means the area enjoys a dry, sunny, warm type of weather! It is perfect for a yacht charter, especially due to its location in the Saronic Gulf, which means it is relatively sheltered from extreme conditions. The safer bays in this area make Athens ideal for less experienced sailors as navigation should be easier, and it’s a stress-free sail for the pros. The prevailing wind is the Meltemi, which blows from the north to northeast between July and September, and though it shouldn’t affect your charter, it’s important to be aware of.

With its warm weather, clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere, Greece is the perfect place to relax and take it easy. Chartering a yacht allows you to explore at your own pace, take full advantage of the luxury of privacy onboard your yacht, and spend the day trying to find the perfect spot to sunbathe and unwind.

2. Glittering Athens Riviera

When people think of Athens, they tend to conjure up images of the magnificent historical remains, but the city has so much more than that. The lesser-known Riviera is a glorious place for a yacht charter as it’s home to a perfect variety of golden sands and rocky coves, stunning marinas from which you can rent or moor your boat, and opportunities to do activities like windsurfing. With an array of bars and restaurants by the water specialising in freshly caught seafood, you can spend a day getting lost in Athens’ centre and retire to the beach for the evening to drink and dine on your yacht or in a restaurant in front of the glowing colours of a Mediterranean sunset!

3. Extraordinary Heritage

Considered to be the ‘Ancient Capital’ of the world, Athens is full of some of the most important historical remains across the globe. A yacht charter here gives you access to sites such as the remains of Ancient Olympia, where the first Olympic Games took place in 1896, and the world-renowned Acropolis and Parthenon.

4. Fascinating Tours

Athens is full of many different types of tours for you to enjoy :

  • Acropolis and Ancient Agora tour: This guided tour takes you to the top of the Acropolis to see the Parthenon and other historical monuments and then to the Ancient Agora to explore the marketplace and political centre of archaic Athens.
  • Walking tours of Plaka: This walking tour takes you through the charming old neighbourhood of Plaka, located at the base of the Acropolis.
  • National Archaeological Museum tour: This guided tour takes you through the National Archaeological Museum, which houses some of the most important artefacts from ancient Greece.
  • Food tours of Athens: This guided tour takes you through the city's traditional food markets and tavernas to sample local dishes and learn about Greek cuisine.
  • Athens by Night tour: This guided tour invites you to view the major landmarks and monuments illuminated at night.
  • Athens bike tours: This tour allows you to explore Athens by bike, visiting the capital's main landmarks and historical areas.
  • Athens hop-on hop-off bus tours: This tour allows you to explore the area at your own pace, hopping on and off the bus at various landmarks and monuments.

24 Hours in Athens

In a place like Athens, you want a good amount of time to explore the sights, wander the charming cobbled streets and eat good food, and a yacht charter in Athens gives you this chance. Whether you visit before, during or after your charter, give yourself at least 24 hours to uncover the magic of this historical area.

You may wish to moor your boat the night before in one of Athens’ marinas so you can get up early and start your day without fuss. Once you’re up, head straight into the centre, grab a coffee from a charming café in Kotzia Square, and then head to the Acropolis, which was last inhabited in 510BC and is considered one of the most prominent historical sites in the world. When you get hungry for lunch, find Manimani restaurant – a restored neo-classical house near the Acropolis museum serving inexpensive Peloponnesian dishes. If you’re up for more walking, you can hike (or take a chilled cable car journey) to the top of Lykavittos Hill for some of the more impressive views and what may be the most impressive view throughout your whole yacht charter.

Afterwards, head back into Athens centre and find Agia Irini Square, a bohemian hub of life where many locals gather in cafes and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to soak up the locals' lifestyle, eat a traditional Mediterranean lunch and watch the world go by. On summer evenings, open-air cinemas are scattered throughout the town and are the ideal, peaceful way to end a busy day. For dinner, there are plentiful options for you to choose from, but if you want to dine with a view, head to Dionysos, which serves traditional Greek food with a breathtaking view of the Acropolis lit up at night.

Exquisite Cuisine

Greek cuisine blends traditional Mediterranean flavours with unique local ingredients to create distinctive dishes which are imitated and celebrated worldwide. Whether eating on board your boat or venturing onshore to dine in local restaurants, a yacht charter in Athens means you’re in for a culinary treat! If you want to sample the finest Grecian gastronomy, experience the Michelin-starred fresh seafood from ‘Varoulko Seaside’ in Piraeus, overlooking the Mikrolimano harbour. Otherwise, don’t miss out on the chance to try the quintessentially Greek ‘Baklava’, a sweet dessert made from phyllo pastry drenched in syrup, or taste the real version of a Greek salad made with the freshest of ingredients!

Eating in Greece is intertwined with good company and discussion, and for this reason, it is considered an important part of the everyday life of the Greeks. There are many types of eateries in Greece. You can sample local delicacies such as tzatziki, moussaka, and dolmades and try the best local wines and ouzo. Why not read some reviews from the local restaurants and bring your crew to the perfect spot for lunch or dinner?

Once you’ve soaked up all the culture Athens has to offer, there are plenty of nearby destinations for you to travel to!

One of the best ways to explore the Greek islands is by yacht. Renting a yacht allows you to see the islands up close and personal and allows you to create your itinerary. The Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea are both popular sailing destinations in Greece, and each offers a unique experience.

The Cyclades: from the famous Mykonos and Santorini to Amorgos and Phlegandros.

As you sail around the Aegean Sea, you'll see some of the most famous islands in Greece, such as Mykonos and Santorini. Mykonos is known for its vibrant nightlife, while Santorini is renowned for its stunning sunsets and beautiful white-washed buildings. Both islands are must-see destinations, but there are also many other islands in the area that are worth visiting.

The Cyclades are the most visited of the Greek islands, with their natural coves, picturesque harbours and lively nights. It's no surprise if your group wishes to spend many hours in the area!

Mykonos is a popular tourist destination in Greece and a classic stop for most trips to this archipelago, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and picturesque white-washed buildings. It is located in the Cyclades islands and is a popular spot for party-goers and those looking for a more relaxed vacation. Spend your nights dancing in Mykonos at one of its wide range of venues, from beach clubs and bars to clubs and music venues, meaning whatever your group is looking for; there is an option that best suits you!

No sailing trip to Greece would be complete without making a stop in Santorini. Santorini has some fantastic and unique adventures that will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your catamaran cruise. Some of our top picks:

  • The volcano of Santorini offers a unique opportunity to sail to the top of a volcano, visit the hot springs, and witness the breathtaking views from the crater.
  • The island of Nea Kameni, the volcanic islet in the caldera's centre, offers a great opportunity to swim and snorkel in the warm waters.
  • The island of Thirassia is the quieter and more traditional sister island of Santorini.
  • The Red Beach and the White Beach, two of the most famous beaches on the island, are known for their red and white volcanic sands, respectively.

There are several sailing routes from the central port in the Cyclades in Mykonos or Paros. From here, you can set a course for more remote islands of the Cyclades, such as Amorgos and Phlegandros. Private cabins offer passengers the luxury of exclusivity; on a yacht charter, you can discover experiences that cannot be done without a boat. The length of the Grecian coastline has many beautiful lagoons and coves waiting to be found. A lagoon is typically located in the more secluded parts of the islands and offers a more peaceful atmosphere for you to enjoy.

Relaxing on a Santorini terrace, sipping a coffee or tasting refreshing Mediterranean drinks will put the finishing touch to your vacation week.

The Ionian Sea: Corfu, Zante Kefalonia and Lefkada

The Ionian Sea is an excellent option if you want a more relaxed sailing experience. The waters here are calmer, and the islands are less crowded. The Ionian Islands are also known for their beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. Some of the most popular islands in this area include Corfu, Paxos, and Lefkada.

These waters are ideal for anchoring. Here you can enjoy each port departure of its quiet bays, unexpected taverns and the range of colours that draw their landscapes.

Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian islands; it will amaze you as soon as you spot it from your cabin window. Discover picturesque seaside villages, resorts, wild natural landscapes, and tiny verdant islets. Some islets are even lined with luxurious resorts. Venice's natural beauty and influence make it a great place for exploration. It's one of the best places to visit in Greece, with people from around the world visiting its many attractions. Corfu Town is the capital of Corfu and a brilliant base for exploring the island.

It is a Venetian town, with buildings similar to those in Italy and an English remains in the arcade of the old French quarter. The town gives visitors castles, hills and monasteries, and quaint little islets offshore. The Corfu port was once part of the Venetian Empire, and its influence can be seen in the architecture, which is why many refer to it as a miniature Venice. The rich history of this island also extends to Ancient Greek times when Kerkyra was its name, and it has left influences marks from many different empires throughout time. Corfu Town is well known for its picturesque waters, which are very popular among tourists; it’s no wonder why so many people flock here each year looking for an unforgettable experience!

Getting There

The city is well connected; with Athens International Airport, Greece’s busiest, located 20km east of central Athens, reaching your yacht charter base will be easy! The Greek capital also offers guests many marina options for yachts. Some of the most well-known include the Alimos Marina, the Flisvos Marina, and the Marina Zeas. These marinas offer various amenities, such as boat storage, repairs, and fuel.  Alimos Marina is one of the largest marinas in Greece and the Mediterranean, with a capacity for over 2,000 yachts.

Weather in Greece

Sail aboard a catamaran, sailing yacht, motorboat or even luxury yacht around the Greek islands. The Greek coasts enjoy mild temperatures in winter, but rain and wind are recurrent. However, snow is not to be expected in Greece or on cruises in most cases. In the summer months of July, August and September, on the other hand, the weather is usually arid and hot, and summer storms are also common.

The islands located to the east of the Aegean Sea tend to have a more humid climate than the islands of the central Aegean.

In Santorini, a favourite of travellers and sailors, the average summer temperature usually reaches 34 degrees Celsius, with water temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius. During autumn or spring, the weather is mild and pleasant, and the ports are not as crowded, thus ensuring an excellent cruising experience.

Sailing Conditions in the Mediterranean

For sailing in the Greek islands, utmost importance to have up-to-date wind information available. Even if you are an experienced sailor, caution should be exercised in this area. You must be prepared for strong and constant winds in July and August.

Athens

Yacht Charter Athens

Ancient, edgy Athens is a city well worth visiting. A major base for chartering a boat in Greece, it’s an exciting combination of ancient and avant guard. The iconic Acropolis dominates the city; a visible reminder of Ancient Greek heritage.  The world-class Acropolis museum is a must and one for the best places to watch the sunset. Summer nights in open-air  bars and restaurants ,the delightful Greek cuisine, the stark sunshine and shimmering seas is a heady combination and a promising beginning to a sailing holiday in the Aegean.

Museums and ancient sites are dotted all over the city if you would like to catch up on some history. Glamourous city beaches with an exciting after-dark scene await those looking for some fun.

Top-class, full-service marinas in the area accomodate everything from a simple sailboat to a megayacht motorboat providing safe, comfortable bases to start your sailing adventure from. Centrally located, the islands of the ArgoSaronic Gulf, the Cyclades and even the Dodecanses are accessible from here depending how much time you have.

Athens International airport is well connected to the rest of the world, especially during the summer months. Major bus and train stations are situated downtown and are connected to all the major cities and towns of Greece . The nearby ports of Pireaus and Lavros are connected by ferry to the Greek islands and Italy, and is a big and busy harbour.

Sailing Conditions

Sailing from an Athens charter base has many advantages. Being protected by the Attica peninsula and the Peloponnese, the winds on the Saronic routes are friendly and recommended for easy sailing. The proximity of these islands from Athens makes them ideal for a shorter boat charter. Although it gets very busy in high season, the area is well connected and makes picking up your boat charter easy.

Further south, the wind is stronger, offering more challenging sailing around the Cyclades. There are plenty of islands to explore - quiet and relaxed to busy and lively. Alternatively, a skippered or crewed charter with an experienced local skipper is recommended.

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Is There Uber In Greece 2024 (Here Is What To Know About The App)

Is There Uber In Greece 2024 (Kinda, Here Is What To Know About The App)

Is there Uber in Greece?

Yes … But it’s a little different …

We’re so used to grabbing our phones and clicking on the Uber app that it comes as quite a surprise when it’s not available. When you’re traveling, you may find that some countries don’t support the popular ride service, and that can be frustrating, to say the least.

However, the good news is that there is always an alternative.

If you’re traveling to Greece soon, you’ll be pleased to know that Uber is available, although it might be a bit different from what you might be used to.

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

How Is Uber Different In Greece?

An illustration of an Uber car driving down a road with a view of the sea in Rhodes while wondering, "Is There Uber In Rhodes?

The biggest difference is that you can’t use it everywhere. Uber is only available in four Greek destinations – Athens , Thessaloniki , Corfu , and Santorini .

The main reason for this is that local taxi drivers conducted huge protests against Uber when it first arrived in Greece. They felt it would impact their livelihoods, and so changes were made to help it fit in better.

You’ll no longer see Uber operating in Greece as Uber Taxi. In this case, you hire local taxi drivers via the Uber app. So, you’re hiring a regular taxi, in essence, but Uber is doing the leg work.

How To Use The Uber App In Greece

UBER IN CROATIA - CROATIA TRAVEL BLOG

You use the Uber app in Greece exactly the same way you do anywhere else. You type in where you are and where you want to go.

You’ll see how much it’s going to cost, and you can pay either online or when the driver shows up. The nearest driver will be sent to you, and you can track this via the app.

The only difference between the four locations in Greece is that you’ll be in a regular taxi and not the driver’s personal car. As a reminder, only Thessaloniki, Corfu, Santorini, and Athens have Uber.

How much do taxis cost in athens.

Athens Airport To The Acropolis, Athens - Yellow taxi at Athens International Airport

Athens has a flat rate for all journeys, and this includes Uber.

The standard starting rate is €1.8 with a minimum fare of €4. The cost per kilometer in the day is €0.9, and between midnight and 6 am, the per kilometer cost is €1.25.

Using Uber Taxi Service In Santorini

Uber does exist in Santorini , but it’s even more different from Athens. Here, it’s called Uber Taxi, Uber Van, and Uber Comfort. Just as described above for Athens, when you use the app to request a ride, a regular cab will come to pick you up, but Uber handles everything.

The biggest difference is that Santorini is a very expensive island, and as such, the fixed fare is an eye-watering €36.

Yes, you read that right.

Uber doesn’t miss a trick, and they’ve launched an Uber Boats service on Mykonos Island . Between June and September, you can request a boat to take you where you want to go, and it will hold up to eight people.

When Uber Drivers Are Not Available – Other Transport Services

Of course, Uber isn’t available across the whole of Greece, and you’ll need to know about other taxi apps you can use. The good news is that there are plenty, and they work very similarly to Uber.

1. Free Now

This app used to be called BEAT, and it’s extremely popular in Athens. The app works exactly the same as Uber’s, and it’s a very fast service.

Once your driver arrives, you can pay either with cash or a credit card. You can read driver reviews before you book, and if you change your mind after you’ve booked, you can cancel via the app.

2. Taxiplon

Another very popular taxi app in Greece is Taxiplon. You can use the app or call and book your taxi in exactly the same way. Whenever a driver is free near you, they will be routed to your location.

As with most taxi apps, you’ll be able to track the driver’s location in real time, so you know when they’re about to arrive. You can pay via card or in cash.

3. Taxi. gr

Getting around major towns and cities is very easy with Taxi. gr, one of the newest taxi booking apps in the country. This app works very similarly to Uber, and you can pay by card or cash, depending on your preferences.

Final Word On Uber in Athens & The Islands

So, does Greece have Uber? Yes, but it’s not what you might be used to. It’s only available in its regular form across four locations. The good news is that there are other popular apps you can use, and they work very similarly to Uber itself.

As with taxis in any location, know the fare before you get in, and if they’re on a meter, make sure the meter is running.

It’s always a good idea to use a GPS app on your phone while you’re on your journey to ensure the driver isn’t using the old-fashioned “scenic route” scam.

34m Dubois high performance sloop Silvertip back on market

The 33.8-metre high performance sloop Silvertip has rejoined the market with Matt Albert of Superyacht Partners.

Built of composite GRP by Yachting Developments of New Zealand she was delivered in 2002. Exterior design and naval architecture is by Dubois Naval Architects and her interior was finished by Agnes Comar . She has had just one owner since new, who has looked after her meticulously and upgraded equipment regularly.

The award-winning sloop had a "significant refit" in 2021 and a new sail wardrobe is due to arrive in 2025. Sporting a carbon-fibre mast, Silvertip has notched up victories at the Millennium Cup in 2009 and 2012.

Her interior offers three cabins sleeping up to seven guests, including a king-sized double master cabin aft, a double VIP cabin and a twin with bunk beds and a single berth. All the cabins are finished with Swedish pear wood, complemented by neutral fabrics and carpets with splashes of red. As well as air-conditioning, the cabins benefit from opening portholes for fresh air when at anchor.

The spacious saloon, with red leather dining table one side and lounge seating opposite, has "oversized hull portholes" and skylights for guests to enjoy visibility of their surroundings whilst at anchor or underway, the broker said. The feel is contemporary, clean and new.

Silvertip's flush teak decks give her a sleek, racy look as well as offering crew easy access when handling sails. The cockpit can be set up for guest dining or relaxing in the sun while the twin helm stations are positioned just aft; sociable, if wanted, but out of the way. A large aft deck where guests can stretch out on sunpads leads to the swim platform that may be lowered when at anchor offering easy access to and from the water or tenders.

The 114GT, ABS-classed sailing yacht for sale also benefits from a single 300hp Lugger diesel that gives her a 4,500 nautical mile range at 10 knots without hoisting her sails. Much higher speeds are achievable under sail, with asymmetric flying from her bowsprit.

Her five-year class survey has been recently completed and she is ready to go for a sailor who appreciates the thrill of high performance and racy looks.

Lying in Athens, Greece, Silvertip is asking €3,900,000.

Calmer winds and reinforcements offer hope against Greek blaze which left one person dead

Topic: Wildfires

Greece's worst wildfire of the year that killed one person and reached Athens' suburbs is no longer active, according to local fire departments.

A woman was found dead in a burned-out factory after the fire reached Vrilissia, around 14km from central Athens.

What's next?

The fire no longer has any advancing fronts thanks to calmer winds and reinforcements of water-dropping aircraft and firefighters from abroad.

Greece's worst wildfire of the year that killed one person and reached Athens' suburbs is no longer active thanks to calmer winds and firefighting assistance from abroad, according to local fire departments.

Some 700 firefighters, backed by 200 fire engines and nine aircraft, were battling the blaze on Tuesday, local time.

The fire broke out on Sunday near the village of Varnavas, 35 kilometres north of Athens.

It torched homes, vehicles and swathes of bone-dry forest since.

Local newspaper Proto Thema said the damage spanned 100 square kilometres and 100 homes.

But with strong winds dying down overnight, the fire department said the fire no longer had any active, advancing fronts and firefighters focused on extinguishing hundreds of slow-burning areas.

Reinforcements of water-dropping aircraft and firefighters were arriving from abroad after Greece requested assistance from Europe's joint disaster response mechanism.

Dozens of homes and businesses were reported to have burned, although authorities did not yet have an exact number.

Winds strengthened again on Tuesday afternoon, but no new major flare-ups were reported.

The blaze leapt from Varnavas into suburbs of Athens on Monday, choking the city with smoke and ash and stirring panic in neighbourhoods that had not seen such a fire so close in decades.

It scaled Mount Pentelikon, also known as Mount Pentelicus, which overlooks the capital, and moved towards suburbs that are home to tens of thousands of residents, including Nea Penteli, Palaia Penteli, Patima Chalandriou and Vrilissia.

Flames as high as 25 metres tall were spotted.

Three hospitals were forced to evacuate, and there were power cuts in parts of the wider Athens region.

Mobile phones in the area got at least 30 push alerts warning people to flee.

"The wind would go in one direction and then in the other," Dioni resident Spyros Gorilas said.

"The smoke was suffocating. You couldn't see. Your eyes teared up. You couldn't breathe."

"Even the helicopter that dropped water, you couldn't see it."

"You could only hear it."

Police have helped evacuate more than 250 people. Some residents spent the night in shelters. Sports halls and hotels were also turned into evacuation centres.

Authorities said some people who refused to leave their homes later became trapped and required rescuing, endangering the lives of firefighters.

Passenger ferries heading to the port of Rafina, north-east of the capital, were diverted.

The Athens Medical Association warned those with chronic conditions, the elderly, pregnant women, children and those with respiratory and heart problems to be extra cautious.

'Many active localised blazes'

Firefighters are battling "many active localised blazes", a spokesperson said. ( AP: Michael Varaklas )

Fire department spokesperson Colonel Vassileios Vathrakogiannis said firefighters were longer battling a single front but "many active localised blazes", mostly around Marathon and Pendeli.

The Marathon area was the site of a famous battle between Greeks and Persians in 490 BC. It hosts a museum and archaeological site but there were no immediate reports of damage to either.

One woman was found dead in a burned-out factory after the fire reached Vrilissia, around 14km from central Athens, the fire department said.

"Thirty-five years living here, a fire had never reached this area," resident Meletis Makris said.

"My house was utterly destroyed, even the walls fell down. There's nothing left," Vrilissia resident Sakis Morfis added.

"The only thing I cared about was saving my dogs, so I left everything [else] behind."

At least 66 people have been treated for injuries. Two firefighters have also been hurt.

Greece has activated the European Civil protection mechanism and is expecting France, Italy and Czechia to provide aircraft and firefighters.

Spain and Türkiye have also offered help.

Greece on high alert for wildfires through to Thursday

Recent lighter winds and firefighting efforts have reportedly helped reduce the blaze's intensity. ( AP: Aggelos Barai )

The country will remain on high fire alert until Thursday amid strong winds and temperatures forecast to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Recent lighter winds and firefighting efforts have reportedly helped reduce the fire's intensity.

Costas Tsigkas, head of the association of Greek firefighter officers, told state television ERT that firefighters were "at a better level across the front" but were expecting winds to worsen the fire again.

"Every hour that passes will be more difficult," he said.

The cause of the wildfire has not yet been determined.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to chair a ministerial meeting later on Tuesday.

The Greek government has announced compensation and relief measures for those who have lost homes or property.

Opposition parties accused the government of not doing enough to prevent the disaster.

Syriza, the leftist main opposition party, questioned the number of aircraft battling the blaze.

The socialist Pasok party said Greeks were paying the price of poor fire prevention policies.

A van engulfed in flames, obscured by haze.

The destruction has revived memories of the July 2018 fires in Mati, a coastal area near Marathon, where 104 people died in a tragedy later blamed on evacuation delays and errors.

Last year, wildfires in Greece killed more than 20 people, including 18 migrants who became trapped by the flames as they trekked through a forest in north-eastern Greece and were caught by a massive blaze that burned for more than two weeks.

Wildfires have been a common feature of Greek summers for years, but climate change has brought hotter weather and less rain — ideal conditions for large-scale fires.

Dozens of other wildfires also broke out in several parts of Greece on Monday.

"Firefighters have been working at full tilt for months," Nikos Lavranos, head of Greece's main firefighters' union, said of the situation.

"They are exhausted."

"The wildfire had all the characteristics that we, as firefighters, don't want a forest fire to have. A combination of hot, dry and windy [conditions]."

"It was extremely aggressive, difficult to manage and unpredictable."

The southern European country experienced its warmest winter on record this year and was on track for its hottest summer, with scant rain in many areas for months.

The worsening situation was mirrored across southern Europe, including in Spain and the Balkans.
