She features a cabin with a breathtaking view and maximum possible privacy that is ensured by stairs that bypass the upper deck.

The panoramic suite boasts a massive bathroom with a trendy freestanding bathtub, stunning mosaics, and a marble floor.

The four contemporary guest bedrooms are located on the lower deck with their own color schemes.

It is complemented by the elegant fabrics and decorative features such as the two vertical gardens hanging behind the bed heads that add a touch of elegance.

The main deck is decorated in Calacatta marble flooring and striking full-height windows that are edged in gloss rosewood frames to create an exceptionally peaceful and relaxing interior design with a Middle Eastern flair.

Various Italian designer names also contributed to its interior such as Artemide , Barovier & Toso , and Patrizia Garganti for luxury lighting, Paola Lenti for the outdoor furnishings, and Donghia for the sofas.

His Way: The 133-Foot Serenity

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: October 21, 2017

yacht serenity owner

Wow Factor: Elements of a Life

“Getting a cook is a whole game-changer in itself,” says the owner of the 133-foot IAG Serenity , explaining how his yacht-design (and size) tastes have evolved during his years on the water. He grew up boating with his family near Chicago and, as an adult, bought a 50-foot Cranchi to cruise off the Florida coast.

Serenity, IAG, Superyacht

He moved up to an 80-foot Lazzara, followed by a 116-foot Lazzara — both of which required him to hire a captain and crew, and learn to be a guest instead of an owner-operator. “You’re at a different level,” he says. “You can really enjoy the water and kick back while the crew does their thing.”

When he sat down with an empty quarter-scale arrangements plan to sketch out what he wanted aboard his 133-footer, he incorporated spaces for entertaining as well as eye-catching design features.

“About six years ago, I went on Man of Steel, a [164-foot] Heesen, and on that boat, it had backlit flooring with pebbles in it,” the owner says. “I kept that in the back of my head for several years.”

On Serenity , the feature is in the companionway, made of clear acrylic with backlit blue lighting.

Water Features: An Unusual Way to Chill

“At my home in Chicago, and actually at my home in Florida too, I have a zero-entry pool,” Serenity ‘s owner says. “I did that for my kids when they were young. It’s an easy way to get in the pool and splash around.”

Those pools start at about 1-inch deep and progress to deeper water, like a beach — a feature he wanted to re-create abaft the outdoor dining area on Serenity ‘s top deck. About 15 feet of the deck’s after section includes a 6-inch, drop-down step. “That area can be filled up with water,” he says. “You just keep your chaise lounges right there in the water.” In that space, as well as in other parts of the sun deck and other decks, he added misters to enhance the cooling effect.

“I think I have about 40 misters on my boat,” the owner says. “When you’re sitting in this little plunge-pool area on your chaise lounge, the misters take water and atomize it really fine and mist you. That will drop the temperature roughly 10 to 15 degrees. I have them over the hot tub and other areas of the sun deck too. I got that idea because I was golfing and my cart had a little mister in it, and it was amazing.”

Serenity, IAG, Superyacht

Her Master Suite: Made for Mom

Most main-deck master suites are for owners, but Serenity ‘s was created for this owner’s mother.

“When she would come with us on the 116 Lazzara, she wanted a little space from the rest of the family,” he says, “so she’d stay in the forepeak off the galley. She had one little porthole in the ceiling of her room. When we built this boat, I said, ‘Mom, you’re going to get that master on the main deck, full-beam. It’s going to be like you’re on a cruise ship.’” He had IAG build fixed balconies on both sides.

“I don’t know of any boat at any size that has those double balconies to port and starboard,” he says. “She called her place ‘the hole’ on the old boat. I wanted her to have an amazing view and the breeze going through the boat.” A third fixed balcony is one level up, off the sky lounge. That’s for him. “You can walk out there and smoke a cigar,” he says. Opposite is a bay window. “It’s an amazing place to sit, and there’s an 85-inch TV over the fireplace,” he says. “It’s a really cozy room with a great surround-sound system.”

Not much information is available on Serenity prior to being purchased by Robert P. Richards in the early 1970's  . There is speculation that the boat was used for patrolling the East Coast during World War II. You will notice that she was deeded to the USA during the war.  She was built in 1941, just before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After World War II began, no other luxury yachts were built by Elco, only PT boats (approximately 399) for the war.  We have found 2 of  the other 6 sister ships.  They are Encore and Gemini which there are pictures below.  If anyone has any information on any of the other sisters, please let us know.  According to old records from Ed and Gail Baumgart, Gail's father, Robert P. Richards, bought the boat in the late 60's or the early 1970's. Richards did a complete overhaul on her beginning in 1972 at the Galena Boat Yard on the Sassafras River at Gregg Neck, Maryland and renamed her "Serenity" . The crew quarters were removed and a new galley was installed which was constructed completely of cherry wood from a tree growing on the property at the Galena Boat Yard. The upper deck top was extended to the back and the dingy was removed. New oak floors were installed in the salon over the engines. The Captain's quarters were redone, with the door to the back deck being moved to one side and a queen size bed installed. The instrument panel was also redone. All the renovations were in mahogany, except for the cherry wood galley and the oak floors. Richards died in 1981 and for 22 years the boat stayed in the Galena Boat Yard with only enough repairs to keep her afloat. Gail (Robert Richards daughter) and Ed Baumgart kept the old Elco's bills paid until Ed restored her again in 1993 in order to bring her back to Chicago where they still live. The trip was from Gregg Neck through the C&D Canal, around Cape May, up the New Jersey shore past New York, up the Hudson River to Albany, then through the Erie Canal to Lake Ontario, Lake Eric, Lake Huron and finally Lake Michigan to Chicago. Every winter in Chicago, Serenity was dry-docked and needed repairs made by Ed Baumgart to get the boat ready for late spring and summer use on Lake Michigan.

On July 7, 1998, Jim & Nel Blair of The Woodlands, Texas (located North of Houston) took possession of Serenity. Jim flew to Chicago where Serenity was docked on Lake Michigan. Ed Baumgart and his brother Rich accompanied Jim down the Illinois River to her final berthing place, the Lakewood Yacht Club in Clear Lake, Texas, adjacent to Galveston Bay. Serenity's journey was roughly 1800 miles from Lake Michigan to Galveston Bay at a speed of approximately 9 MPH. The trip was down the Illinois River to the Mississippi. Then back up the Ohio River and then down the Tom Bigby Waterway to Mobile, Alabama. Ed brought some friends with him. Some boarded and debarked Serenity at St. Louis, Missouri. Several friends of Jim Blair boarded at Mobile, some got off at New Orleans, and then Serenity had to set in for repairs at The Diamond B Ship Yard in New Iberia, Louisiana to repair a bent prop. There, Serenity was well taken care of by Big Bobby and Little Bobby Bodin, owners of the Diamond B. Other friends then joined for the rest of the journey to Galveston Bay. Some say the trip took 2 months. Some say it was less. Some say it took 38 cases of beer and a few good cigars to make the trip. Others do not know, but good times were had by all. At times, there were at least 10 shipmates aboard to help guide Serenity through the treacherous waters of the Intercoastal Canal. Serenity finally docked at Lakewood Yacht Club late in August, 1998, where she is docked today.

The location of Encore is presently unknown but we understand she is for sale.

D. R. Fuller bought Gemini in the 1970's.  She was once owned by the Duke of Windsor.  She was in great shape.  Mr. Fuller sent us these fine pictures of a great boat.

OWNER'S SUITE — SERENITY

Posted September 15, 2018 in Charter by Janine St.Denis

The 122-foot (37.2m) Flagship motor yacht SERENITY is a true testament to her name. Built in 1993, but fully refitted in 2017, SERENITY offers guests a tranquil oasis from which to explore the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska . Eight guests are welcomed aboard for the ultimate luxury adventure — which is exactly what her owners wanted. SERENITY is their first yacht; they purchased her in 2016 and have been delighted by her ever since. Avid charterers, the owners of SERENITY were keen to explore the incredible waters from Seattle to South Alaska; for them, owning their own yacht was the next step .

They spend between six and eight weeks a year on board in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Previously named TALOS, the owners dubbed their yacht SERENITY because “that is how we feel when we’re aboard. She is the perfect yacht for this region,” her owners say. There are lots of enclosed spaces, like the flybridge — which can be alfresco — and the skylounge, that allow you to enjoy the sights regardless of conditions. The region in which the yacht cruises is unlike the traditional tropical yachting hot spots. Which is just how her owners like it. They’re often on board in Alaska. First thing in the morning, the owner will enjoy a run on the yacht’s treadmill, then the adventures begin.

SERENITY’s 29-foot Alaskan-style fishing boat, the SERENE MACHINE, is fully outfitted for exploration. It is perfectly suited to be independent of the main yacht for the day and comfortably accommodates eight people. The SERENE MACHINE has a standup day head and is enclosed in order to protect from the weather. The SERENE MACHINE is perfect to take guests ashore for hikes, get up-close-and-personal with glaciers, cast a line and hope to reel in the big one, and cruise alongside pods of orcas and other incredible wildlife. “We’ve had it only one season,” the owners say, “and it opened up the utility of the yacht in ways you never imagined.”

Bear in a stream in Alaska

One of the owners’ favorite aspects of the yacht is the on-deck master. “It’s a huge plus as opposed to being down stairs,” they say, but also mention, “The yacht has great spaces for gathering with everyone on board, but it also has places perfect for some quiet time to read a book or watch scenery go by.”

SERENITY’s owners love Alaska and Puget Sound; this region is their favorite cruising destination. “The beauty and the wildlife are incomparable to anywhere we’ve ever been,” they say. “From the islands and changing nature of the landscape to seeing whales, otters, eagles and bears, to going fishing and crabbing, there’s so much to do — we love enjoying the many things that part of the country has to offer.” Another favorite cruising location for SERENITY’s owners is New England along the Penobscot Bay of Maine and farther north into Canada. They also enjoy The Bahamas, specifically the Exumas — they really love the fishing there. But they maintain that no matter where else they have cruised, Alaska is by far the most unique. “It’s constantly changing and always surprising you,” they maintain, adding, “There’s one spot in Red Bluff Bay where you can nose the yacht to a tidal waterfall then cruise a couple hundred yards and spot a bear fishing in a meadow, then in a few more hundred yards, you drop the shrimp pods to catch dinner.”

SERENITY is the perfect yacht in the perfect location for her owners. They enjoy every moment aboard and they offer her for charter, allowing guests to relish the luxury and incredible location that go hand-in-hand with SERENITY. “She was on the charter market when we bought her,” the owners say. “We expected to be aboard between six and eight weeks a year in Alaska and with her already consistent charter following, it made sense for us to make her available to others in those incredible waters.

SERENITY profile with mountains in the background

The responses from clients who cruise in that area are always the same — they are blown away. Unless you’ve spent a lot of time up there, it’s unlike anything you’ve experienced before. We also get a lot of compliments on our incredible crew, but what guests talk about most are their experiences in the hidden bays in which they anchor, and the incredible opportunities SERENE MACHINE has opened up.”

Charter guests get to enjoy everything from fishing to wildlife spotting — “one group of charter guests were out on SERENE MACHINE when a pod of orcas came by,” the owners say. “One of the whales was swimming on its back under the boat, getting a belly scratch from the keel.” Another favorite memory for guests is cruising past glaciers and picking up a piece of floating ice for cocktails that evening.

The captain and crew of SERENITY further enhance the onboard experience. From the captain with a 20-year Navy career and lots of big-boat experience, to the chef who creates incredible Alaskan feasts from the fresh fish caught by the guests that day, the crew up the ante aboard SERENITY, ensuring an enjoyable, five-star experience for all.

After all, yachting is all about having fun! “We love being on the water,” the owners of SERENITY say. And their yacht allows them total flexibility and total peacefulness. “We love to anchor out in a beautiful bay with nothing around us but nature.”
