1850-On the urging of the New York Yacht Club to build a fast sailing boat, George Steers creates plans for the America. The low black schooner is designed using the reversal of the codhead-and-mackerel style. 1851-Answering a challenge from the Royal Yacht Squadron, the schooner America enters the Hundred Guinea Cup Race, a 53 mile race around the Isle of Wight. It easily defeats the 14 British ships and is awarded the Hundred Guinea Cup.On August 25th Queen Victoria herself visits the ship. America returns home and presents the New York Yacht Clup with its prize, which is renamed America’s Cup. Kit includes laser cut wooden hull and wooden strips, fittings set, sails, rigging thread, plan and manual. Scale model of a fast Cup Sailing Boat.

The yacht “America,” which gave its name to the prestigious sailing competition known as the America’s Cup, holds a legendary place in maritime history. Launched in 1851, the America was designed by George Steers and built by the renowned shipbuilders of Coenties Slip in New York City. This sleek, three-masted schooner was notable for its innovative design and craftsmanship, featuring a sharp, slender hull that allowed her to glide effortlessly through the waters. The ship’s elegant silhouette and superior sailing capabilities captured the attention of onlookers, especially during the historic race around the Isle of Wight, where America triumphed against a fleet of British yachts. This victory not only marked the beginning of the America’s Cup tradition but also symbolized the pride of a burgeoning United States maritime culture in the mid-19th century. The America remains an enduring representation of innovation, competition, and the spirit of adventure that defines yacht racing to this day.

1851 Schooner America, in 1:20 scale

Here we have a project to design the frames for the famous schooner America, the famous ship that started one of the longest-running athletic competitions in the world, the chase for America’s Cup.

America was originally built as a yacht to showcase American yacht-building skill and to make a little money by winning yacht-racing competitions. She was a real racer/cruiser.

There is an excellent description of the history and career of America on the Wikipedia page for the schooner: Wikipedia – Schooner America

Here are a few details or the original yacht:

  • LOA: 101′ 3”
  • LWL: 89’ 10″
  • Beam: 22′ 10″
  • Draft: 10’ 11”
  • Designers: James Rich Steers and George Steers
  • Year Designed: 1850
  • Builder: George Steers and Co. Long Island, New York
  • Launched: 1851
  • Scrapped and burned in a shed in 1945, Annapolis, Maryland

Scale model dimensions, at 1:20 scale:

  • LOA: 60.75”
  • Beam: 13.7″
  • Draft: 8.3” (including 1.75″ allowance for stability)

Next is to establish the actual design criteria:

Standard Equipment:

  • Topsides identical to the drawing.
  • 10% more volume below the waterline.
  • Two thicknesses for the keel to aid in keeping the hull straight during planking.
  • .0625“ offset for hull planking
  • Bulkheads are 1/8” birch plywood.

Starting Point – The Original Plan Sheets

Here we have a look at the starting point of the design. These pictures are from the book of America’s Cup yacht design and are missing a lot of detail. This is an interesting project in particular because there is so little accurate information about the original construction. Much has to be inferred from pictures and old paintings.

Modifying the Underwater Shape

The drawings were then chopped up so the area below the waterline could be tweaked for R/C modelling. The drawings are inserted into Solidworks on separate planes so they can be stretched separately. As noted in the builder’s requests the keel was lowered by about 1.75″. When the frames are sketched, the discontinuity will be smoothed with a long spline.

Have a look at our page on the design and fabrication of Malabar, by clicking . The adjustment of the shape of the hull and the insertion of the sketches into Solidworks is done in a similar manner in most models.

Building up the design in Solidworks

The drawings are inserted in the software and stretched to fit the requested dimensions. For these projects, where all parts are intimately connected, we use Multi-Body parts in Solidworks.
Here the main dimension outline and station positions have been prepared and the keel has been drawn and extruded.
America has an interesting arrangement for the sheer plank. It was a challenge to figure out how this would have been created on the original ship, especially around the stern, where the cap rail wraps around quite pleasantly.
I was expecting the sheer plank and the deck to line up but I haven’t found information that shows this, one way or the other. I opted for one line for the sheer and another for the level of the deck.
Once the various 3D curves are created, using the Projection tool in Solidworks, the bulkhead shapes are attached to those so that everything can be tweaked if needed.
Next, the tops of the bulkheads are added. These are used so the model can be built easily on a table. This is quite useful for large models.
Next, the T-rail parts are added and the 3D Multi-Body is ready to be disassembled and inserted in the 2D for cutting.
Finally, For this model, a simple 2D exploded view is created and inserted in a 2D drawing. Making the assembly drawings is my favorite part of Solidworks projects.

Assembling the Frames

The builder has been gracious enough to send me pictures of the model from the moment he started assembling the frames. I find Solidworks is the right software for doing these frame sets. This sets was designed in Solidworks, cut, and shipped direct to the client. The parts were tested in the software. There was no prototype. Sure, there are some areas that need to be addressed but we knew about them even before cutting.

Dealing with the Transom

The various drawings and photographs show conflicting designs for the transom. After some fiddling and decision-making, the builder himself created this lovely transom. This is one of the great parts of working directly with a builder on a project; each detail can become unique right from the start.

Choices, choices!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen quite such a lovely planking and finishing job on a model! And yet, the Italian builder, like so many most excellent Italian artists, was not happy with the finish and then painted the model to even higher standards. I am really happy to have had the pleasure to participate in the construction of such a great model.

Internal Structure

A picture really is worth a thousand words. Several things can be seen in this picture. You can see the nice deck camber that was designed into the frames. You can see the step from the stern deck to the main deck. You can see the nice gently reduction of the bulwark from bow to stern, and you can see the extra bracing the builder has incorporated for the various lines and controls. A masterful job.

Rigging question -- yacht America

I am working on Bluejacket's America 1/48th scale.  I am getting close to rigging and have started studying the rigging plans, such as they are.  I am not a sailor by any stretch of the imagination, and am a bit unsure of a couple things I see.  Most of the running rigging I can figure out...I can see how pulling a line here moves that thing up there.   But there are a couple places where there are a couple blocks that appear to just be there to tension standing rigging and it is not at all clear how/where the line terminates.  For example, see the two pictures below.  One is the top of the fore mast the other is obviously the bowsprit.  In these cases you can see the line through the blocks (or bullseye in one case) but the line just appears to be a loop, it does not terminate anywhere.  At least in a couple cases it is obvious the line starts off tied to the first block, but then where does the other end go?   Maybe it is tied off to the other block, or to the line the block is attached to  (similar to the lanyards for the shrouds)?  Looking at the build logs for the Mamoli America kit, it looks like they have those lines by the bowsprit go back through a hole in the bulwark to a cleat on deck, but that looks rather clumsy.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I am not really concerned about hyper realism, mostly just curious about this.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

I hope my response is not too late to be helpful.

I finished the Model Shipways yacht  America  about a year and a half ago. The plans were more helpful that the ones you are working off of (at least what you have shown us), and I simply followed the plans.  Below are photos that might help. The first three I took a few minutes ago, the final one two years ago.

What your plans show as a couple of blocks at the top of the mast my plans identified as a "rigging screw", and depicted what I have always known as a turnbuckle.  I have done a lot of sailing over the years, and seen many boats with headstays, shrouds and the like tensioned with turnbuckles at either end of the cable, but I've never seen an arrangement quite like what the  America  apparently had.  The kit didn't come with a tiny turnbuckle, so a fashioned a reasonable imitation out of wire.

What appears to be the one of two bobstays that is not adjustable is actually the lower end of the headstay, which runs through a sheave (I just drilled a hole) in the bowsprit. I don't know why the other one is adjustable; I can't think of any reason to have it anything other than very taut.

@Tomculb @Gregory   Thank you for the replies.  I apologize that I have not replied sooner....I failed to "follow" my own post so did not get notified of your replies.

What you say makes sense and is helpful....I ended up working on sails first instead of rigging so I have not tackled these bits yet, though I am close to starting it.

  • mtaylor and Gregory

Just to follow up, I've completed two of these things.  So far I've just been running black line through the blocks (or bullseye in one case) and seizing the line to the line attached to the block on one or both ends, as shown below.  There are three more on the bowsprit rigging that I will do the same with.

Sorry to contribute so late.

Reference "The Low Black Schooner" by John Rousmaniere. In the back of the book is reprinted John Stearman's rigging plan of 10/1851. Notes on the following page indicate the foremast rigging as "7/8" iron rod (from jib stay) set up by a Turnbuckle to head of / mast"

I'm not sure as to the exact way of fastening the rod to the mast and to the stay, but maybe others can help.

Yacht America Childrens Model Ship Kit – Corel (SM102)

History of the yacht america.

Yacht America, August 22nd, 1851. The British Royal Yacht Squadron that were racing 14 boats challenged the New York Yacht Club and the ‘America’ schooner to a race around the Isle of Wight off the Southern Coast of England.

The ‘America’ won with an eight minute lead over the second place yacht the British Aurora. Winning that cup that had been held to celebrate London’s first Universal Show, led to the start of the winners cup that was called the ‘Hundred Guineas Cup’. More recently it has changed its name to the ‘America’s Cup Series’ and the cup has changed its name to the ‘Americas Cup’.

The Marvelous AC75s On Deck

  • By Dave Reed
  • August 20, 2024

America's Cup boats

April began with new-boat reveals that highlight the innovations of the second-generation AC75s for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup . While similar in size and scale, no one boat is alike.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing, of the Swiss camp, was first to show its AC75, BoatOne , in a theatric soiree, giving observers and other teams a peek at the boat’s design traits. Its straight and narrow bow profile transitions to a long and tapered bustle that goes all the way to the stern. The walls of BoatOne ’s tall crew pods stop sharply before the transom section, leaving what amounts to a long overhang to accommodate the internal rudder elements. Bumps sculpted into the foredeck are said to redirect wind flow into the jib and down the middle of the boat for aerodynamic gains.

America’s Cup defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, was next to reveal, with a soft launch, followed by a foiling session the following day. With a naming ceremony that came a week later, the Kiwis’ AC75, Taihoro , was blessed for action, and they went straight into sailing in Auckland. Unlike the high cockpit walls of Alinghi’s BoatOne , however, those of Taihoro taper down toward to the transom scoop, which houses the mainsheet traveler system in a trench, and the rudder assembly.

The following day in Cagliari, the Italians of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli rolled out their metallic silver AC75, a menacing-looking design that has its pronounced curves and a significant bustle which rises toward the stern. The boat’s tall cockpits produce a deep trench through the middle of the boat.

INEOS Britannia was fourth from behind the curtain with a boat dubbed RB3 . It’s different enough from Alinghi’s and ETNZ’s AC75s to be dangerous. The plumb bow starts sharp and maintains a steep deadrise before flaring out to a flatter bottom. A pronounced bustle tapers off near the stern and transitions to a thin skeg that ends short of the rudder.

The New York YC’s American Magic revealed its boat, Patriot , in early May, blessing it and going sailing on the same day. It’s certainly a different look, summarized by the team’s design coordinator, Scott Ferguson. “We followed our own design path with Patriot as we pushed the limits of the AC75 rule while tailoring for the Barcelona venue,” he says. “Our overall philosophy is minimalistic, as we’ve tried to squeeze down our volumes to the base minimum while still fitting the crew and systems into the boat.”

With the French Orient Express Racing Team pulling from Team New Zealand’s design package, there’s an expectation that its platform will not be too far off the defender when it comes to light soon enough. It had not yet been launched at press time.

In terms of crew-pod assignments, cyclors have now taken the back seats, mostly concealed and out of the airstream, while trimmers and helmsmen take the front seats for a better view of the action. American Magic went to the extreme, positioning three pods inboard, two well aft in the boat, with cyclors on recumbent bikes.

America's Cup Match Racing

Next week, when the 37 th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup kicks off in Barcelona with its opening ceremony, the contest that began in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight between the fastest British and American sloops (the yacht America won handily) will come back to Europe for the first time in 14 years.

The move to the Catalan capital from the 2021 event in New Zealand will make it more accessible to sailing fans in Europe, and even North Americans who want to view the fast, technical AC75 foiling boats in person. Barcelona has been preparing itself for a surge of spectators for the “return” of the Cup, which was held twice in Valencia, Spain, in the aughts.

The America’s Cup may be billed as “the race with no second place,” but it takes three months of racing and four events for one of five Challenger teams to win the Louis Vuitton Cup, and that winner will race Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup final. The racing runs from August through October, and this year includes a first-time all-women’s America’s Cup as well as an event for the world’s best youth sailors.

Having Barcelona as a venue was a smart move, partly for the gorgeous beaches fronting the race course on the Med. But there is also the city’s magnificent architecture and sense of history as well as vibrant arts, culture and, of course, no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants.

There are many five-star hotels in the area, but the smartest and most thrilling way to see racing is by water. The vessel options are wide-ranging—from weeklong superyacht charters to luxury suites on a cruise ships to day trips on sailboats with Michelin-starred cuisine. Many can be combined with on-land stays and even cruises to other parts of Spain as part of the itineraries.

One important note: Four zones adjoining the race course allow spectator boats. Before chartering a vessel, be sure to find out which zone the boat will operate in, because that impacts how close you are to the racing.

Here are 9 options to suit the most avid Cup aficionados or those visiting Barcelona who want to sip champagne and watch the AC75 foiling boats battle it out.

Superyacht ‘Resilience’

america yacht kit

Edmiston is offering charters aboard the 212-foot Resilience during the America’s Cup. The ISA-built superyacht, designed by Enrico Gobbi, features a mosaic-tiled pool, circular fire pit and a BBQ for a ringside lunch. Post-race pampering comes via the steam room, sundeck jacuzzi and gym, and there’s even a self-playing Edelweiss piano and projector for evening entertainment. The vessel sleeps 12 across seven cabins. From September 16, weekly charters start at about $645,000 (€600,000).

Explora Journeys

america yacht kit

The soon-to-be-launched Explora II looks very much like its sistership, the Explora I : onyx finishes, self-playing Steinways, on-deck Technogym bikes, a spa with a Himalayan salt room, Dunhill cigar den and a wine cellar boasting decades-old Chateau Latour. With 461 luxury suites, how was the Explora II chosen to become an America’s Cup viewing platform? The idea came from the top down.

“I love sailing and believe the Med is the most beautiful sea on earth,” Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the cruise division of MSC Group, told Robb Report during a visit aboard Explora I in Barcelona. “We thought if only our customers could also experience [the America’s Cup], we can call it the ocean state of mind.”

Explora II launches in mid-September, with itineraries planned to coincide with the different Cup events. On October 6, the vessel will be in port for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and Puig Women’s Races. Guests can take a walk to the official race village and experience its excitement before watching the races from their suites. A 10-night journey starts from $5,210 per guest.

The Almanac Sailing Experience

america yacht kit

Barcelona’s Almanac hotel has a romantic-gastronomic experience that offers guests front-row seats on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 sailboat with a capacity for 10 guests. Besides the racing, the package includes two nights at the hotel. The boat comes with the hotel’s branded slippers and Jimmy Boyd bespoke amenities. Enjoy a selection of customized Cava Bellinis from the pop-up bar. Chefs from the hotels’ restaurant will also serve up shrimp salad and fennel ceviche paired with organic Spanish wines. The boat can be chartered every Saturday from August 31 to October 26. The Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin starts on August 29 and lasts through Sept. 8. There’s also the Puig Women’s Race (first all-female America’s Cup in its 171-year history) and, of course, the America’s Cup finals in October. Prices start at $2,940 per couple.

Superyacht ‘C’

america yacht kit

For a majestic week-long cruise that incorporates America’s Cup summer races and possible side itineraries in Costa Dorada, Sitges and Formentera, Camper & Nicholsons’ expansive 177-ft C is the flashy option, defined by Minotti furniture, lacquered panels and a hamman. It also sleeps 12 in six cabins that feature a master and two VIP suites. Its chase boat also offers a great opportunity for side trips. Weekly charters from Sept. 18-October 31 run from about $513,000 or €400,000.

Sailing Yacht ‘Imagine’

america yacht kit

UK adventure specialists Pelorus offer a private seat on an elegant sailing boat seeped in America’s Cup history. Built in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts, Imagine is a 110-footer that served as an official viewing platform for the America’s Cup in Auckland, but it has also completed three global circumnavigations. Beyond its sailing chops, it’s a beautiful vessel, with a blonde, teak-lined deck, large salon and dining area, and three cabins for sleeping seven guests. It will be available from October 12 for the America’s Cup final. Pelorus is also offering to bookend the week with trips to Majorca and Ibiza. About $101,000 (£79,121)

Superyacht ‘Diane’

america yacht kit

Also available from Edmiston, the 141-ft Diane can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms for the week. The interior is all about soft hues, featuring cream leather and white marble, boasting a bar and plenty of outdoor seating for watching the races. For the non-race legs, guests can take to the water via the large beach club, complete with seabobs and wakeboards. It has a Balearics license, making a hop to Ibiza or Majorca a possibility. Weekly charter rates from September 23 run about $150,000 per week (€140,000)

Black Tomato Cup Package

america yacht kit

Incorporating a city-stay, Black Tomato’s America’s Cup getaway includes a day’s private day charter to view the race, plus five nights at the Mandarin Oriental as well as visiting the regatta course and different bases of the America’s Cup teams for an insider’s look at the operations and technology. As a dayboat, its Bali Yacht Saxador 400 GTO can accommodate 11 guests. It sets sail from Port Olympic, giving guests a sweeping view of the city on one side and the regatta course on the other. The boat has access to the blue area (for preferred charter boats) on the front line. From $12,750 per person, based on two people.

Superyacht ‘Quasar’

america yacht kit

Camper & Nicholsons recently introduced the 153-foot Quasar to the charter market and what a great way to end the Med season than by viewing the America’s Cup. It has six cabins (including two master suites) that can accommodate 12 guests, along excellent outdoor seating, an upper salon that joins the aft deck area for viewing the races or dining al-fresco. The beach club has a large selection of water toys. Visits to scenic Med ports around Barcelona are also possible on the week’s charter, which start at about $232,000 (€210,000).

Superyacht ‘Kiawah’

america yacht kit

For front row seats on day charters in the blue zone (the third-closest area to the races), official charter partner ac37 Sailcharters offers different types of vessels and packages. The 110-foot Kiawah features a cocktail lunch on board, a specialized lecture from an expert sailor, and an AV system to follow the race in real time. From August 22 through October 11, daily rates are about $34,000 (€30,800) and during the America’s Cup finals October 12-27, rates move to about $41,000 (€37,400).

'Coach Walz' rallies Democrats with personal pitch to middle America

Tim Walz is running for vice-president, but for a while on Wednesday night, it felt like he was campaigning to be the nation’s high school football coach.

Before he spoke, roughly a dozen of the players on the team he helped coach to a Minnesota state championship decades ago ran on stage, some wearing their old high-school jerseys, bouncing to the blasting horns of a marching band.

Once Mr Walz did appear, delegates in the packed arena waved signs that read “Coach Walz” – and the crowd chanted “coach, coach, coach!”

As this was Mr Walz's first significant opportunity to introduce himself to the nation, his speech was heavy on his personal story – his time as a football coach, of course, but also his upbringing, his enlistment in the Army National Guard, his work as a high-school teacher, and his service as a congressman and governor.

  • Who is Tim Walz, Kamala Harris's VP pick?

During parts of his speech his daughter Hope, 23, and son Gus, 17, were seen in tears in the front row of the arena. "That's my dad!" Gus mouthed as the television camera focused on him.

In the folksy style that the Democratic campaign believes connects with moderate voters in the crucial states of the Midwest, he told the crowd that he was "ready to turn the page on these guys", referring to Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance.

"So say it with me: 'We are not going back.'"

He followed a diverse range of speakers and entertainers who took to the stage on the third night of the convention in Chicago, with Oprah Winfrey receiving the most raucous response after a surprise appearance in her hometown.

The four-day party extravaganza will culminate on Thursday evening when Vice-President Kamala Harris formally accepts the Democratic nomination, a little over a month after President Joe Biden stepped out of the race.

But on Wednesday night, everything built up to Tim Walz, a man virtually unknown to most Americans just weeks ago.

He drew from the first speech he gave in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earlier this month after being chosen as Kamala Harris's running mate, repurposing some of the same zingers.

“In Minnesota, we respect our neighbours and the personal choices they make,” he said. “And even if we wouldn’t make the same choices for ourselves, we’ve got a Golden Rule - mind your own damn business!”

Pro-Palestinian delegates denied Democratic convention speaking slot

Democrats try to turn tables on one of their biggest weaknesses.

Personal freedom has become a common refrain among Democrats at this convention and in pivoting to it, Mr Walz described "the hell of infertility".

IVF fertility treatment has become entangled in America's debate over abortion rights and the Minnesota governor has repeatedly alluded to the process on the campaign trail when talking about his family's story.

His wife, Gwen, recently clarified that they went through a different procedure , drawing Republican criticism that Mr Walz had been misleading.

On the convention stage, he said he wanted to talk about their struggle having children because this election was about "freedom".

“When we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean your freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people you love," he said.

“The freedom to make your own health care decisions. And, yeah, your kids’ freedom to go to school without worrying they’ll be shot dead in the halls.”

He also touted the Democratic priorities he has enacted while serving as Minnesota governor – including free school lunches, paid family and medical leave, middle-class tax cuts and lower prescription drug prices.

“While other states were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours,” he said to cheers.

But it was the coaching theme he returned to again and again. When going on the attack against Donald Trump and JD Vance, he pointed to a frequent Democratic target – Project 2025, a think-tank policy blueprint designed in part by former Trump administration officials. The former president has disavowed its contents, but Mr Walz had a rejoinder.

“I coached high school football long enough, I promise you this - when somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re going to use it,” he said.

And in closing, he poured on the football metaphors, promising a pep-talk as the crowd again chanted “coach”.

america yacht kit

“It’s the fourth quarter,” he said. “We’re down a field goal. But we’re on offence. We’re driving down the field. And, boy, do we have the right team to win this.”

Earlier in the evening, Ms Harris – if she were watching – had a chance to see a few of rumoured finalists in her vice-presidential selection process on stage.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke of the positive effect government had opening the door way for him to start a family as a gay man. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also hit on the personal freedom theme – focusing heavily on education, reproductive rights and fair elections.

“Kamala and Tim’s names may be on the ballot,” he said, “but it’s our rights and our freedoms on the line.”

Ms Harris opted for Mr Walz, however – and his particular talents were on display Wednesday night. He didn’t have Mr Shapiro’s soaring rhetoric or Mr Buttigieg’s eloquence, but Democrats hope his flat midwestern accent, his somewhat rotund physique and his thinning hair – combined with the small-town coach speak – will appeal to the kind of voters who have abandoned the Democratic Party when Trump is on the ballot.

Many Republicans said they were relieved at Mr Walz’s selection, as they feared the appeal Mr Shapiro would have in key battleground Pennsylvania.

And they’ve already been on the attack against the Minnesota governor – criticising what they view as too-liberal policies as governor and contending that he not only misrepresented the nature of his family's fertility treatments but also his rank in the Minnesota National Guard.

They haven’t yet found a way to dent his coaching record, however. And if Wednesday night in Chicago was any indication, that – as much as anything – is going to be a central focus of the Walz’s pitch to the public.
