WHAT CLIENTS SAY

As a family, including our 4 year old Labrador, we recently chartered a 'bareboat' yacht from Hamble Point Charters for 7 days to cruise the Solent. The company were fantastic from our first enquiry to handing back the boat. The yacht was clean and well presented. A great week and we will happily use them again!

We have just had another wonderful week on a yacht we chartered from Hamble Point Yacht Charters. We have sailed several of their boats, this time it was a lovely 35 foot Bavaria. Chartering from HPYC is always an easy choice for us: the boats are well maintained, support is excellent, and the staff are always super friendly and helpful. On top of that, Hamble Point is such an ideal starting location for sailing around the Solent.

This is truly a 5 * service. The team really looked after us both ashore on arrival and also while at sea. We were a relatively inexperienced crew but always felt the team ashore had our backs. Thoroughly recommended.

I just wanted to say Thank-you very much for the weekend charter. It was exactly what we were after (albeit cold!) plus Andy was an awesome teacher and great company. We’ll definitely be keen to book again soon!

We had a fabulous four days. Marina is ideally placed for the Solent, boat was in great condition, well equipped and a joy to sail. We were well briefed and the shore side team including the dog very friendly.

We charted one of the sailing yachts for a fantastic weekend cruise in the Solent. The boat was in superb condition and well equipped, the staff was very helpful explaining how things work on the yacht and there was also a video available with all the important information. 10/10 would recommend!

Had a fantastic week chartering Blue Otter, Alex was incredibly helpful and sent loads of information and date checking prior to booking. There was a handover video and both the handover and return were really smooth. The boat was lovely and well maintained and Lee was really helpful in recommending places to visit (and helping identify the steering issue as an autopilot takeover - doh!). Definitely will be back and would fully recommend!

Just back from a lovely week in the Solent. Great service from HPYC from first inquiry through to return handover. Very straightforward to deal with, and the yacht was in excellent condition. We've chartered from many companies in the UK and abroad and the attention to detail (and flawless inventory!) was second to none. Everything about the yacht and equipment had clearly been well looked after and was in immaculate condition. Great service, will use again.

Always very friendly service, and well-maintained yachts. Easy check-in and checkout. Will be back...

We had a great time and were very happy with everything. Your team were genuinely friendly and were very helpful when we needed it. Is a big contrast to many charter companies I have dealt with in the past.

Watching the sun go down with a glass of bubbly on the deck of a sparkling yacht was unbelievable. What a treat, and a much needed change of scenery in these troubled times. We will be back for sure

Fab service, nothing too much trouble, including my daft questions. I'll be a repeat customer for sure!

We had a great time sailing with Lee for a few days at the beginning of September. Hamble Point Yacht Charters supplied us an impeccable 45 ft Hanse yacht, which was handled with complete mastery by Captain Lee.It was a privilege to sail with Lee, who is clearly a highly skilled professional taking great pride in his work ... but who is also a fantastic character with a great sense of humour and plenty of fun stories to keep the whole family entertained. He balances the serious side of safety and learning about sailing with a whopping dose of amusement and good cheer. We sailed the Solent in some decent seas, visited Bucklers Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River and learned lots about British nautical history. Our boys started somewhat of a fishing trend catching bass off the back of the boat in Portsmouth and we would love to sail with Lee again in the future. The man truly knows his stuff, maintained the boat impeccably and went to every effort to ensure that we had a great time. Many thanks to “Shippers” and Hamble Point Charters. We’ll be back.

Chartered bareboats with HPYC on numerous occasions most recently in Sept 2020. Always helpful and accommodating. Highly recommend.

We had a fantastic weekend sailing on Loxley B. Boat in super condition and spotlessly clean, Alex. and the team very thorough and always on hand to answer any questions. A great experience. We will be back. Thank you!

The United Kingdom (UK), made up of England, Ireland , Scotland and Wales, is an island nation in Northwest Europe that has a long history of sailing and yachting and is the perfect location to charter a yacht and experience the seas. Famous for tea and biscuits, being the birthplace of Shakespeare and the Beatles, there is much more to the UK than the red telephone boxes and double-decker buses we see on London postcards. With Southampton having one of the largest boat shows in Europe, Southampton Boat Show, and Scotland having many islands and hundreds of kilometres of coastline, naturally, you don't have to look for a boat rental in the UK.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in the United Kingdom?

Are you looking for a yacht charter in the UK at an affordable price? Look no further than Click&Boat - the market leader in online boat rentals. You can rent a boat in the UK with or without a skipper depending on your boating experience and qualifications. Click&Boat has yachts in the UK for every kind of budget. From sailboats and yachts to motorboats and RIBs, find something for your budget with Click&Boat through a free personal adviser who will provide you with a free quotation. The price of a boat rental varies depending on the boat type, the size of the vessel, the location, the seasonality, and the duration of the tip. However, the average prices by boat type are as follows:

€5,600 per week

€15,204 per week

€1,738 per day

€7,995 per week

€2,500 per week

What is included in a yacht charter in the UK?

Yacht charters in the UK vary considerably in boat type, length of time and price of the charter. For those who have a sailing license, bareboat charters are available and for those who don't then, you can charter a yacht that comes with a skipper and even a crew. It is completely normal to rent a boat through Click&Boat that includes a captain to tour you through the waters and lots of our listings include added or optional extras too. From snorkelling and diving equipment to jet skis and wakeboards.

Where to go in the United Kingdom

If you are interested in chartering a yacht in the UK then you have many different locations to choose from. Yacht enthusiasts will love the port of Cowes where the annual Cowes Week sailing regatta takes place in August attracting some 20,000 attendants every year. Cowes is located on the Isle of Wight which lies in the English Channel and is an ideal starting point for your sailing trip in the UK. From there, you can sail to the harbour town of Gosport or to Portsmouth. Alternatively, at the other end of the UK, you can rent a canal boat in Falkirk or rent a boat on lake Windermere which is popular with tourists in the Lake District, and the largest natural lake in England. With many beautiful places to choose from, the UK shines with a whole range of fantastic sailing destinations for everyone.

Where to begin your sailing holiday in the United Kingdom.

The coastline of Great Britain is more than 31,000 kilometres long and so there is no shortage of choices when it comes to deciding where to begin your sailing journey. You will find most of the UK's busiest and most popular marinas on the south coast including Port Hamble Marina, Gosport Marina, and Ocean Village Marina in Southampton. If you are beginning a few days or week-long journey then departing from here is highly recommended. You can easily visit the Isle of White, the Jurassic coast or embark on a more adventurous journey to France and down to Spain or Portugal.

What is there to see when you charter a yacht in the United Kingdom?

Off the south coast of the UK, you will find many incredible sights of natural beauty that you can enjoy from the comfort of your boat rental. Begin with a cruise down the Jurassic coast enjoying the naturally incredible landscape and head to Durdle Door. Durdle Door is a natural arch carved out of limestone cliffs over many years. It has a really nice beach too and is really popular with both domestic and international tourists. Just a couple of minutes up the coast is Lulworth cove - a beautiful beach and cove with amazing waters to swim in due to the sea's narrow entrance to the cove.

When is the best time to visit the United Kingdom?

The UK is somewhere that you can visit all year round due to its moderate weather that is not extreme in either summer or winter. The UK has a reputation for being miserable and wet all the time but this is somewhat a myth. No, the UK does not get incredibly hot and sunny weather, but it isn't always raining and it is never shockingly cold either. However, the weather is definitely temperamental. It can be sunny one second and raining the next so make sure you pack an anorak! If you prepare for the weather then it definitely will not ruin your trip. As always with chartering a boat you should bring a windproof and waterproof jacket and things to keep you warm at night when temperatures drop. And even during the colder weather, the beautiful British landscapes can be even more appealing when coated in the snow - so photogenic! So do not worry about when is the best time to visit the United Kingdom and instead focus on how you are going to spend your time there!

Yacht charter in The UK

A Yacht Charter in the UK is probably not the first destination that springs to mind when considering a yachting holiday , but, these northern European sailing grounds provide a wealth of splendid scenery that lends itself perfectly to exploration by boat.

Yacht charter UK

Given that the UK is well known for its dreary weather, it’s easy to understand why it might be overlooked for a sailing trip, but don’t forget that this is a nation built on maritime heritage. With some of the most coastlines and iconic skylines in Europe, so many small islands to explore, and a wealth of rivers and canals to navigate, you can experience some of the very best sailing when you charter a luxury yacht in the UK. And it’s even better when the weather is good.

Chartering a yacht in The United Kingdom gives you the chance to see many different sides of the UK, from small fishing villages to vibrant cities, all from the comfort of your own luxury yacht.

What to see on a trip to The United Kingdom?

A myriad of buzzing cosmopolitan cities and quaint villages, all packed full of endless charm and intriguing history, the UK has a vast range of sights and attractions for all visitors.

England’s south coast is renowned for its impressive coastal towns and resorts – Portsmouth and Southampton, for instance, have a unique sailing heritage, while Beer, in Devon, and Mousehole, in Cornwall, are picture-perfect fishing villages. In fact, the whole south coast of England is peppered with picturesque fishing villages that have remained beautifully intact whilst time has ticked by.

With so many places to visit, and some of the most challenging sailing conditions to contend with, a UK yacht charter will truly be an adventure to remember.

Southampton, a city associated with naval exploration and history and still considered one of the most important ports of the United Kingdom, is a great base for so many wonderful locations nearby, such as the New Forest as well coastal drives to Bournemouth and their maritime competitors, Portsmouth.

Boasting a historic harbour, Weymouth is more than sand, lollipop liners and the beach. It is an epicurean centre for those that want to try something new, and the coastal scenery sets it apart as a must-see destination.

Torquay, the so called “heart of the English riviera” is a seafront town with palm trees and red cliffs, alongside fantastic restaurants and boutique hotels.

boat charter UK

A trip to the Isle of Scilly feels like a world away from the mainland. This archipelago that surrounds 140 tiny islands appears to have hardly ever changed in decades. No supermarkets, no traffic jams, no multinational hotels, this is a land that understands what it means to be of a time before what we have today. It is something to behold on a personal level as this is a location that always takes your breath away.

Away from the south coast, you can sail into the Thames to marvel at a iconic buildings like the Shard, St Paul’s Cathedral and Tower Bridge, or sail further along the east coast for a lazy cruise along the Norfolk Broads or to sample more picturesque fishing villages, including the iconic Whitby, the scene of the vampire’s landing in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

On to Scotland – sailing the turquoise waters and walking the white sands of the highlands and islands will leave you breathless, as will navigating the seas of the inner and outer hebrides.

Along to England’s west coast and you can sail to the picturesque Isle of Man, or sail the Mersey to take in the iconic Liverpool skyline and sample everything this vibrant city has to offer.

There are also some wonderful waters to sail, and brilliant sites to see along the coast of Wales and England’s south west coast.

A luxury yacht charter of The United Kingdom really does offer something for everyone. For the adventurer that wants to learn more about the UK to the historian that wants to sail the seas of the famous leaders and explorers. From families through to groups of friends, it’s a friendly atmosphere that captures each of these towns and locations. Why charter a yacht in The United Kingdom?

Chartering a yacht in The United Kingdom is possibly the only way to really discover the true maritime history of the nation. You see things and experience things that need more than just a moment’s attention. It’s about taking in what makes the coast of the United Kingdom truly different to some of the more exotic locations we offer.

Yacht charter in the UK is an opportunity to relax in this Western European state with its centuries-old seafaring traditions, watching picturesque landscapes, getting to know English culture, architecture and tasting national cuisine on the beach.

Yachting in the UK is not entertainment, not sport, but a real way of life, because there are a large number of yacht clubs, and tens of thousands of various types of vessels of various sizes sail in inland waters. The main yacht charter bases in the UK are located on the south and southwest coast, where favorable weather conditions are formed.

Great Britain is an island state in the Atlantic Ocean, washed by the waters of the North and Irish Seas. Most of the state, called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is occupied by England, which borders Scotland in the north and Wales in the west. Sights of Great Britain are diverse - from medieval castles and Gothic cathedrals to prestigious boutiques and “flea markets”. Here you will find peaceful rural landscapes, vibrant cities with famous churches, and a rich cultural heritage , and a story rooted in the depths of millennia and much more. It is known that the Celtic tribes of Britons were the first to settle on the British Isles, in the 9th century the Kingdom of England was formed by the Anglo-Saxon tribes who moved here, and Great Britain was formed only in the 18th century. At one time, the British Empire with its colonies occupied up to a quarter of all land. By the middle of the 20th century, all lands controlled by Britain had gained independence, although some remained formally under the rule of the English crown.

The capital of the state is London, located on the banks of the Thames, and the most beautiful buildings in the city have historically been built along the banks of the river. One of the most popular types of recreation in London is a boat trip from Westminster to Greenwich. London is rich in its picturesque views, known throughout the world. Among the city sights, one cannot but mention Westminster Abbey, which has been rebuilt over the course of 250 years. with a chapel, museum and other attractions, founded in 1753 by the British Museum, Buckingham Palace (the Queen’s current residence in London), Hyde Park, Madame Tussauds, Sherlock Holmes Museum, National Gallery, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge and Trafalgar Square. About 27 million tourists visit the British capital annually (for comparison: 7 million tourists visit St. Petersburg, Berlin - about 25 million tourists annually), and there really is a look - there are about 300 museums alone.

In Manchester, which stands on the Irwell River, famous for its educational institutions, you need to visit the Cathedral , the neo-Gothic style Town Hall, St. Anne's Church and other churches, local museums, as well as taste Chinese cuisine in Chinatown.

In Liverpool, located on the Mersey River (the birthplace of the Beatles), it is worth visiting the museum of the legendary group, Liverpool Cathedral, the Maritime Museum and other museums and galleries of this oldest English city.

In Birmingham, located in the central part of Great Britain, it is worth visiting the Cathedral of the 18th century, the Catholic Cathedral of the 19th century, the Birmingham Museum, the Botanical Garden , nature reserves, as well as shopping complexes, malls, Jewelry Quarter, and Balti cuisine restaurants.

The capital of Scotland - Edinburgh, located on the shores of the Firth of Fort North Sea, tourists can enjoy the medieval Town district, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Portobello beach area , excellent shopping establishments, modern pubs and pubs.

You can not ignore Cambridge and Oxford, known throughout the world for their educational institutions. The first has interesting museums, and in the second there are many pubs that give you the real spirit and taste of England.

Located on the Clyde River, Scottish Glasgow can win the heart of a tourist by the Cathedral of St. Mungo of the 12th century, city parks , the Botanical Garden, museums and the Gallery of Modern Art.

In the capital of Northern Ireland - Belfast, famous for the fact that the Titanic steamer was launched here at one time, you can visit local pubs, the City Hall, St. Anne's Cathedral and museums.

The streets of most major cities in the UK are full of shops, shopping centers, souvenir and antique shops where you can pick up clothes, shoes, jewelry or souvenirs to taste . London is the capital of fashion, and here you can buy clothes from famous manufacturers. The best places for shopping are traditionally Piccadilly, Oxford Street, Covent Garden, Carnaby Street and Regent Street - for a leisurely vacation with the acquisition of things here may take more than one week.

Guide to United Kingdom

An island nation of rugged coastline, old-world charm and rich cultural heritage

Encompassing England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom offers nearly 12,500 km of diverse coastline to explore, with countless picture-perfect destinations to discover. Whether you are keen on fossil hunting along the UNESCO-listed Jurassic coast, yearn for whisky and golf tours around Scotland’s west coast and inner Hebrides, dream of strolling along Cornwall’s swathes of golden-hued beaches and charming fishing villages or simply wish to soak up the captivating beauty of the Scilly Isles; there is a perfect luxury yacht charter destination for everyone.

One of the most popular cruising hotspots is the UK's renowned sailing mecca along the south coast, characterized by steep limestone cliffs, sheltered coves and charming fishing villages. From the Isle of Wight to the Scilly Isles there are myriad treasures to be uncovered.

Although the UK is not generally known for its sun and sands, this vast stretch of coastline offers a veritable medley of Caribbean -blue waters, swathes of golden beaches and pretty anchorage spots nestled in scalloped harbors, where guests can get ashore and enjoy meandering through cobbled streets and tiny lanes overlooked by characterful cottages and convivial pubs. Due to its popularity the region also offers plentiful marinas with excellent facilities, as well as a gateway to some of the best sailing in the world.

Another popular yacht charter itinerary is around the west coast of Scotland, popular for its bevy of wild and uninhabited islands, ancient settlements and astonishingly rich wildlife. Tourism in this region has blossomed in recent years, with superyachts jumping on the bandwagon. There are plenty of itineraries tailor-made for whisky aficionados, where stops incorporate world-famous distilleries and fine dining experiences, along with a few rounds of golf at some of the world’s leading golf courses.

Due to its central location within the region, charter itineraries can start in England’s capital city, embarking along the Thames and taking in the sights as the yacht cruises past London’s famous landmarks. Yacht charters can choose to head north along the UK’s rugged east coast with stops at Whitby, made famous as the setting in Bram Stoker’s acclaimed vampire novel, and the breathtaking Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve near Northumberland. Alternatively, yacht charters can make a beeline southwards to cruise along the UK’s popular south coast, either on its own, or inclusive of the spectacular Channel Islands, including Jersey and Guernsey, and the Scilly Isles.

The United Kingdom abounds in nature and spectacular wildlife no matter where you cruise, and there are myriad pretty anchorages where you can drop anchor and enjoy the stunning views. Outside of the south coast, there’s not a huge array of marinas, so it’s well worth organizing your trip around any nights you and your guests wish to spend in a slip.

The United Kingdom generally enjoys a temperate maritime climate thanks to the Gulf Stream bringing warming winds across the Atlantic Ocean, with the best months to charter being through the high summer months of June to early September, although naturally the climate is slightly cooler further north.

Encompassing scenic beauty, charming fishing ports and seductive wind-swept isles, the UK offers up an astonishing array of splendid destinations, whether you’re keen on exploring the nation’s rich cultural heritage, want to experience the adrenaline of Cowes Week regatta or simply want to find your own idyllic haven in amongst the numerous isles peppered around it’s coastline, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.

Boat Hire Solent Yacht Charters and Outdoor Activities

Yacht Charter – Solent

Our charter choices for the solent, bareboat yacht charter.

Bareboat Yacht Charter

Bareboat Yacht Charters are where you take full responsibility for the yacht and the crew onboard, with the freedom to explore the sailing area as you wish. We naturally expect a level of experience suitable for the size of yacht and the expected conditions for your chosen sailing area. Depending on the sailing area (Solent or cross channel etc) we will either ask for evidence by way of a sailing CV or for any formal qualification such as an ICC.

Ensure you are comfortable with your experience as operating outside of your comfort zone is likely to end in tears. Know your own limits and don’t forget the limits of your crew !!!

Skippered Yacht Charter

charter a yacht uk

This takes away the responsibility in that you have a the services of a skipper. This is a great way if you are new to sailing, exploring an unfamiliar area or just simply want to enjoy chartering a yacht without any of the responsibility or worry.

A skippered yacht charter is popular in the UK for day charters which may be being used for hospitality or entertainment as it allows the host to focus.

If you are in a new area then using a skipper can show you some of the best spots. Remember you don’t have to have the skipper onboard for the whole time, may be just for a few days at the beginning.

Skippered Sailing Days

charter a yacht uk

We run these throughout the year, so you can enjoy a stunning day out yacht sailing on Hampshire’s South Coast.

Aimed at anyone simply wanting a fun day out on the water.

There is no need to know how to sail as we will provide one of our experienced skippers and you can get involved as much or as little as you like.

Come on your own or with a group of friends.

You are welcome to bring your own lunch or book one of our delicious packed lunches. Tea, coffee and water will be provided onboard.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

The cost of chartering a yacht will vary depending on the type and size of yacht selected. The specification, age, and layout of the yacht can also affect chartering costs to an extent. Charter rates are usually quoted on a weekly basis with bookings typically commencing on a Saturday, although smaller vessels can be chartered by the day in some cases. Pricing is similar across all destinations and is affected more by the season in which you wish to depart. There are destinations available all over the world!

Here is a breakdown of costs involved in chartering a yacht.

Additional Costs

Marina fees |  Fuel costs |  Food and drinks |  Airport transfers |  Crew Gratuity  |  Insurance

Marina Fees

Prices can range from 10€ to 200€ or more per night. Depending on your destination, docking fees can vary significantly. In certain marinas in peak season can cost even more. The price per night is normally calculated as a base price plus a cost per meter of the yacht. Catamarans typically pay for a double berth depending on the marina. Expect to stay in a marina approximately every second or third day of your trip. Your yachting.com specialist can provide you with an estimate of marina fees depending on the location, season, and yacht you intend to charter.

A monohull or catamaran sailing yacht will consume approximately 200€ per week of fuel.

Fuel costs will vary depending on your destination, but the main driver of fuel costs will be the type of yacht you select. Motor yachts will use the most fuel by far compared to a catamaran or monohull of similar size. Fuel costs alone can exceed the cost of chartering a motor yacht.

Sailing catamarans and monohulls are far more fuel efficient compared to a motor yacht when using the engine and of course can travel under sail without any fuel consumption at all.

Food and Drink

Approximately 100€ per person per week, depending on location.

Unless you are booking an inclusive package, you are responsible for purchasing your own food and drinks. If you are hiring a skipper and or additional crew you are required to cover the costs of their food and drink as well. These provisions can typically be purchased from grocery stores nearby marinas.

Airport Transfer

Transportation to and from the airport is not included. Your yachting.com agent will inform you ahead of time of the approximate costs and the best options for modes of transport to and from the marina.

Crew Gratuity

Depending on the destination a crew gratuity of 10% to 20% is recommended if you choose to hire a skipper and additional crew.

For bareboat charters, consider insuring your deposit to avoid unexpected costs. Travel insurance and trip cancellation insurance should also be considered to provide extra peace of mind during your yachting holiday.

Other Incidental Costs

If you travel by car to the marina, expect to incur some parking fees. Tourist taxes and national park fees may apply depending on your destination and sailing route. In general it is best to have some pocket money on hand to cover incidentals during your holiday. Credit card payments are not always available in remote locations.

Yacht Sharing Guide: Best Ownership Options & Schemes

Sunsail Tahiti

The thought of signing up for a yacht sharing may seem totally out of your comfort zone but you could be surprised about the options and schemes available writes Sue Pelling .

Look at any marina and you’ll notice that a huge percentage of privately owned cruising yachts hardly ever go anywhere. They just sit in the marina year after year at great expense, and often deteriorate. Eventually these precious assets get sold off at great financial loss, and often the process repeats itself again and again under new ownerships.

So, what’s the answer? Unless you know you’ll be using your yacht on a regular basis, and/or will be using the boat for racing, it really does pay to ‘do the sums’ and work out whether you should consider the growing trend of boat share ownership.

Yacht and blue water

This sad trend in boat ownership over the last decade or so has prompted a growing move towards loaning or sharing in the marine sector with a steady flow of companies launching fractional/shared ownership, and gym-style club membership schemes.

It’s a bit like the car industry that has seen a huge shift in customers choosing to lease rather than buy. With plenty of good deals ‘out there’ and the chance of being able to drive a top-of-the-range car that would otherwise be out of the range in financial terms in many cases, it is a serious temptation.

It’s the same with yacht shared ownership/lease schemes, with many companies offering a choice of top of the range, fully maintained yachts. Those who choose charter, particularly in gym-style club membership schemes, have the advantage of sailing a range of top-spec yachts, without the outlay of purchasing or having to deal with time-consuming repairs and maintenance. Just step aboard, sail, and hand back when you’ve finished.

Schemes available

Charter company shared ownership.

Some yacht charter companies such as Nautilus Yachting , Sunsail , The Moorings , Dream Yacht Worldwide , Sail Ionian , and Navigare Yachting have expanded into charter purchase schemes, which can be a cost-effective option particularly if you are a regular charter holiday customer. These ownership schemes are an extremely popular way to enjoy boating without the full financial burden of outright ownership.

Depending on the company you choose, you’ll get a chance to sail up to 12 weeks a year in the most beautiful destinations in the world. If you sign up with Sunsail , for example, you’ll  have a dedicated owner team to deal with all the administration side of the ownership scheme, a range of Dufour yachts , or Leopard catamaran to choose from, up to 12 weeks of holiday per year, access to many of the company’s bases around the world, use of other Sunsail boats of equivalent size, no harbour fees, no insurance, and no maintenance costs. You will also have a choice of taking a fixed/guaranteed monthly income, or a reduced purchase price at the end of the contract.

Sunsail, tropical

Dream Yacht Worldwide is equally attractive with its worry-free charter ownership management programmes, with a total of seven options to choose from and, like most schemes like this, allows you up to 12 weeks a year sailing on either your own or a similar yacht, in 40+ of the world’s best charter destinations.

Sail Ionian’s charter yacht partnership scheme has been around for the last 18 years and has proved a great success with an unprecedented level of second term investment. The company reports that 80% of charter yacht partnership investors have re-invested in a new yacht for an additional five years, so it’s worth looking at what Sail Ionian has to offer.

Syndicates/fractional ownership

This is a great way of sharing the purchase and running costs of owning a yacht with a group of people you know, but there is a lot to consider in legal terms and, it is imperative you have an agreement formalised from the outset. Having an agreement in place will help avoid any clashes between members, not only about usage of the boat, and ongoing expenses, maintenance and repair but also about if/when you want to terminate your part of the contract.

It makes sense therefore to use a professional managed boat share company that is set up to deal with all the necessary paperwork and any problems that arise. A good start is the RYA’s legal department that offers advice on Buying with a Syndicate, or  sharingcontracts.com – a company that offers ready-made boat share contracts.

For an all-in-one package, you might like to consider signing up with the yacht share brokerage company Yacht Fractions.  Established in 1991, this company was one of the first to launch a scheme of this sort and operates in the UK as well as globally. The website lists an extensive range of yachts to choose from, so all you need to do is pick your yacht and let Yacht Fractions deal with all the share agreement paperwork and legal issues.

Gym-style membership schemes

If you want the flexibility of owning a yacht but don’t want the commitment, then this sort of gym-style membership where you can step on and off without the hassle of boat maintenance and berthing fees, this is the one for you. There are several UK basked companies such as Flexisail , Pure Latitude Boat Club , Hamble Point Yacht Charters , and Fairview Sailing offering this subscription-style service, and it is becoming more and more popular as would-be boatowners/boatowners realise the advantages.

As with all schemes, you need to read the fine details before signing up to see how it works because in most cases there is a one off ‘club’ joining fee plus a monthly subscription, and you need a RYA Day Skipper and VHF qualifications. Most have variety of membership levels, and a good selection of yachts to suit you requirements.

Pure Latitude has four bases in southern England, and, for a standard membership of £700 monthly fee (on a points basis), you have the choice of 20+ sail and motor boats to use, with around 15-20 days of boating a year.

Flexisail has three membership levels – Midweek, Weekend, Anytime – with the Midweek option from £500 per month with up to 30 days sailing a year. This company’s Flexibook online booking system is popular too, which allows you to make, cancel, swap or exchange time with other members at any time, up to 12 months ahead.

Finally, Hamble Point Charter Membership is simple  and flexible, and its Standard membership scheme starts at £300 per month, which gives you a chance to try out a large range of yachts from 30ft to 56ft. There is no joining fee, and you get up to 41 days of sailing a year.

Bayesian yacht sinking: Horror of those trapped in bedrooms described by former captain

LIVE – Updated at 11:14

A former captain of the Bayesian has described the terrifying obstacles facing those trapped in the cabins as the Bayesian superyacht overturned killing seven.

Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told The Telegraph : “Those who stayed curled up in bed were in the worst situation.

“The storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items,” he said adding he had spoken to traumatised crew members.

“Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.”

It came as divers race to retrieve Mike Lynch’s personal hard drives locked in a safe on the ocean floor, according to reports.

Italian newspaper la Repubblica reported that the tech billionaire, whose clients included MI5, the NSA and the Israeli secret service, didn’t trust confidential documents on the cloud and kept two encrypted hard drives in a safe which now lies 49 metres below sea level.

Mike lynch’s yacht was ‘unsinkable’, says boss of company who built boat.

Mike Lynch was frequently described as the Bill Gates of Britain for founding Autonomy – one of the biggest software firms on the planet

Former captain describes horror of those trapped in cabins

Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told the Telegraph that he had spoken to crew members onboard during the sinking who recounted the horrors facing those onboard.

He said: “The storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items.

“Some had made it to the saloon at this point and they are the ones who survived, as their route outside would have been a little clearer.

“Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.

“Cabinets crashed open as the catches were weak, resulting in glassware and crockery falling out. I’m told almost all the furniture broke loose inside the boat.”

Mike Lynch’s wife, along with 14 others, survived and were rescued by a nearby vessel that was unscathed.

Italian Navy divers have recovered video surveillance equipment from the wreckage of billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht that could explain how it sank.

The British tech tycoon’s boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning. It is now lying 50m below the surface.

Among those killed were Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had been due to begin studying at Oxford University in September, as well as four other family friends and associates.

Divers hunting for clues on how Mike Lynch’s superyacht sank make discovery

What happens now weeks after tragic sinking?

Prosecutors are investigating the captain , New Zealander James Cutfield, and two crew members for possible responsibility in connection with the sinking.

Mr Cutfield is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges. Tim Parker Eaton — the engineer who was in charge of securing the yacht’s engine room — and sailor Matthew Griffith — who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster — are now under investigation for the same possible charges, their lawyer said.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who is heading the investigation, has said his team will consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. They added raising the Bayesian and examining the yacht for evidence would provide key elements to the investigation.

Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda of the coastguard, could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht, adding recovering the fuel tanks was a “priority for us because it has environmental knock-on effects”.

Special forces divers and robots search Mike Lynch’s sunken Bayesian yacht for clues

Specialist military divers are currently searching the sunken Bayesian yacht for clues as to why it sunk in a freak storm off the coast of Siciliy, killing seven passengers.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning, and is now lying 50 metres below the surface of the water.

About six divers from the Italian navy ’s Comsubin unit are investigating the superyacht for electronic equipment, which includes data storage and CCTV and to see if doors were left open during the storm.

Holly Evans reports:

Chris Morvillo and wife drowned aboard Bayesian

Italian authorities said the first post-mortem examinations on the victims had been carried out on US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda . The results confirmed that the pair had drowned.

Morvillo was a partner at Clifford Chance, a white-collar law firm. He previously worked as a federal prosecutor who investigated the September 11 terror attacks, according to the New York Post .

Investigators hope to recover data on sinking of Bayesian

Navy divers recovered hard drives of the video surveillance system on board the Bayesian hopefully revealing the final moments before the tragic sinking of the superyacht.

In the engine room there were the hard disks that catalogued the parameters regarding the electric and thermal propulsion.

“We hope to be able to read something from the media”, an investigator told La Repubblica. They added “Unfortunately they are standard models that are not resistant to water and pressure”.

There was no black box on board the 700-tonne sailing vessel that sank in minutes. It was not required to have one, as it was not a commercial cruise ship.

'Mike Lynch files may be target for hostile spy agencies’

Divers are searching the sea floor for Mike Lynch’s high-tech hard drives before they can fall into enemy hands reports La Repubblica - Italy’s second-biggest newspaper.

Sources told the paper the disks held: “the great digital archive of the IT entrepreneur whose clients included the British MI5, the American NSA and the Israeli services”.

The Italian newspaper said the “super drives” are protected by “cutting-edge encryption”.

The Sun reported the drives now could be a target for the hostile spy agencies of Russia, China, and Iran as they seek to steal valuable secrets.

Autopsies reveal cause of death of US lawyer and wife onboard Mike Lynch’s superyacht

Autopsies have been carried out on a couple who drowned on Mike Lynch’s superyacht when it sank off the coast of Sicily last month.

Seven lives were lost when the British-flagged boat, called the Bayesian, went down in a freak storm while anchored near the Sicilian capital of Palermo on 19 August.

Darktrace to be taken over after Mike Lynch’s death

Darktrace shares are set to stop trading publicly at the end of September, after the company set a timetable for its blockbuster private equity takeover to be completed.

The private equity group Thoma Bravo struck an almost 5.31 billion dollar (£4.3 billion) deal to buy Darktrace in April.

Darktrace AI interrupts in-progress cyber-attacks in seconds, including ransomware, email phishing, and threats to cloud environments.

It marks one of the biggest take-private deals for a London-listed company in recent years, and will see Darktrace leave the FTSE 100 on October 1.

Poppy Gustafsson helped to set up the Cambridge-based company in 2013 alongside Autonomy founder Mike Lynch.

Mr Lynch, and his daughter Hannah, were among seven people to die after the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month.

Bodies flown back to UK on private planes - report

The bodies of Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, 18, and the other victims of the Bayesian disaster have been flown back to their families after their post-mortems, according to reports.

They were repatriated on private planes, with their private funerals expected to be held over the coming days, Italian media reports.

The British tech tycoon ’s boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning . It is now lying 50m below the surface.

Among those killed were Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had been due to begin studying at Oxford University in September, as well as four other family friends and associates .

Jonathan Bloomer, the international chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank; his wife Judith, a psychotherapist; Christopher Morvillo, a US lawyer; and his wife Neda, a jewellery designer also died in the sinking.

Also killed was the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, whose body was recovered floating near the wreckage.

Four victims found with carbon dioxide in lungs

Tech billionaire Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, 18, and five other people died when the Bayesian went down in a downburst, which is similar to a small tornado.

Chef Recaldo Thomas, Jonathan Bloomer, the Morgan Stanley International bank chairman, his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance lawyer, and his wife Neda, were the other victims of the August 19 tragedy.

Four of the victims are feared to have suffocated to death in air bubbles that filled with carbon dioxide, according to their autopsies raising the frightening possibility that they may have been conscious after the yacht sank, according to Italian news outlet La Republica.

Fifteen people, including Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, survived when they were rescued by a nearby yacht.

Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, said there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian and it is “one of the safest boats in the world”.

The Bayesian, a 184-ft superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes after a freak tornado struck.

“The ship sank because it took on water, from where investigators will have to say,” Mr Costantino told television news programme TG1.

He suggested that the sinking was down to a series of human errors.

The CEO said that had the crew shut all doors and hatches, turned on the engine, lifted the anchor, lowered the keel and turned the yacht to face the wind, they would have suffered “zero damage”.

He added that data showed it took 16 minutes from when the wind began for it to sink.

Cartoisio said the tragedy will be even more painful if the sinking was caused by “behaviours that were not aligned to the responsibilities that everyone needs to take in shipping”.

Bodies of Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah flown back to families after Bayesian superyacht sinking

The bodies of those who died after the billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht sunk off the coast of Sicily have been flown back to their families by private jet.

Italian publication Giornale di Sicilia reported post-mortem examinations were completed at a Palermo hospital and the bodies have now been returned.

My colleague Tom Watling reports:

Bodies of Mike Lynch and daughter flown back to UK after Bayesian tragedy

Captain gives his account of tragic sinking

Captain James Cutfield previously gave his terrifying account before invoking his right to remain silent.

According to Correire, he told prosecutors: “Seaman Griffiths came to wake me up and told me that there were 20 knots of wind.

“I looked at the instruments and indeed that was the case. I went out immediately and asked them to warn everyone because I didn’t like the situation.”

He said the Bayesian tilted 45 degrees “and remained like that for a bit and then suddenly fell to the right.

“We were catapulted into the sea”.

Seaman Matthew Griffiths, 22, said: “We somehow climbed back up to the bridge and tried to form a human chain to save those who managed to reach that gap from the accommodation deck ... they were struggling on the walls because the boat was lying in the water.

“The first in the chain was the captain who stretched down. He helped everyone, the ladies, the mother with the little girl ... But we were sinking and unfortunately some didn’t make it .”

Mr Griffiths joins fellow Brit Tim Parker-Eaton, 56, and Kiwi skipper James Cutfield, 51, on the official list of those being formally investigated for shipwreck and multiple manslaughter.

Being investigated does not equate to being charged and is a procedural step.

Professor Yoav Yair, Dean of the School of Sustainability at Reichman University in Israel, told the Mirror that storms dubbed ‘medicanes’ - Mediterranean hurricanes - could cause similar sinkings like the Bayesian superyacht.

He said: “It is not a matter of if this (the Bayesian disaster) will happen again, but rather it’s when and where.

“In the last couple of years we have seen medicanes - which are a new phenomena. These are hurricane-like storms that pack a lot of energy, and create flash flooding, torrential rains, lightning, hail and severe sustained winds. The 2023 “Daniel” medicane destroyed Libya and caused over 30,000 deaths there.

“The sea surface temperature has risen globally and in the Med as well, charging the atmosphere with increased fluxes of water vapor, which means a higher potential for massive storms.”
