Dyneema ®  is also called high molecular weight polyethylene (HMPE), used in the manufacture of several types of ropes, Yacht Ropes, Dinghy Control lines, Soft shackles, 4x4 winchlines. Supplied in a number of grades Dyneema SK75 Dyneema SK78 and Dyneema SK99 we also hold Kingfisher Dyneema Cruise, a good performing Dyneema rope that fits the leanest of budgets.

Q.  What is HMPE/Dyneema ®  and Dyneema rope?   A.  The short answer is Dyneema ®  is the world’s strongest man-made fibre.

Q. Why should I be using Dyneema ropes?   A. Because they offer the highest load rating per mm compared to conventional ropes of the same diameter.

Q. Will Dyneema ® ropes last   A. Yes, a Dyneema rope with a polyester sheath should last and ware the same as a 100% polyester equivalent.

Protective Coatings

Even the best balanced and highly engineered braids can benefit by the addition of protective coatings.  There are many benefits, the most significant being enhanced abrasion resistance.  Coatings can include colouration for identification and can alter the texture of a slippery fibre to provide greater interaction between cover and core.

• Bindacoat and Urethane options
• The impregnation of Bindacoat adds the dimensions of handling, wear resistance and fibre binding to the slippery texture of Spectra®
• Urethane impregnation enhances the abrasion resistance of a braid by forming a protective barrier to the braid fibres beneath
• Colouration can be added

Hot Knife Cutters with carry case

Donaghys hand held Hot Knife Cutters come with a Donaghys' carry case. In addition to the standard electronic model, we also have a cordless portable model that allows the user to maximise time on the job. The carry case includes a product manual, small spanner and wire brush. The Cordless model includes Lithium-ion rechargable battery and charger.

Hot Knife Cutter - Bench model

This Hot Knife Cutter is designed for use on bench tops. The bench top model is suitable for continuous operation with fixed blade (working range 100mm) for quick and clean cutting and sealing of fine cords, braids and ropes.

Rope Measurer

Donaghys Rope Measurer accommodates rope and cordage from 6mm to 20mm in diameter.  The toothed Measuring Wheel and Stainless Steel Pressure Shoe assure uninterrupted NO SLIP contact with cordage.

Donaghys Ski Braid is made from monofilament polyethylene and hollow in construction. Splicing is easy where the plait can be fed inside the hollow core and when tensioned the eye loop makes a soft handle of loop for lead fittings.

• Ideal for use in water skiing, water sports and can be used as an animal lead rope

Synthetic Braids

Donaghys range of multi purpose synthetic braids are strong, lightweight and abrasion resistant.  They are suited to a wide variety of general purpose applications.

• Smooth and textured polyester braids
• Hard wearing HT polyester fibre in supple plait construction
• Highly resistant to stretch, abrasion, UV degradation and discolouration
• Applications include use as a blind draw cord, picture framing cord, tying lashing and lacing cord

Donaghys Shock Cord is built to withstand the toughest environments.  Years of development have produced a quality engineered durable Shock Cord that will consistently allow better than 100% elongation and recovery making it ideal for marine and industrial applications.

• Premium marine grade rubber core to ensure minimum 100% stretch characteristic
• Long life wear resistance to abrasion and UV degradation
• Not affected by water

Donaghys Sash Cord is a general purpose braid of Solid Braid/Spiral Braid configuration providing excellent handling, knotting and non kink performance.  Sash Cords are available in Cotton and Polyester fibre constructions.

GP Chafe Guard

GP Chafe Guard is a protective wear sleeve made from Stealth (UHMwPE) fibre.  Designed for protection of sheets and other ropes in high abrasion applications such as Halyard ends.

Life Buoy Cabinet

Donaghys' Life Buoy Cabinets are sold in complete units supplied with a removable cover, encapsulated floating line holder and 30 metres of 8mm braided floating heaving line (Life Buoy not included).

• 30 metre braided line (8mm diameter) with clip, suitable for attaching to life buoys and life rings
• Cabinet can store both the 30 inch and 24 inch round Life Buoy rings with the Encapsulated Floating Line Holder paddle.
• Removable lid protects the lifesaving equipment against vandalism, theft and the elements
• Housings can be screwed direct to a wall or fence or mounted using galvanised mounting pole

Donaghys Dockline is a mooring line that combines the dynamic stretch and strength characteristics in the Nylon core with the abrasion resistance and colour stability of Polyester in the jacket, making this the perfect mooring rope for any marine craft.

Dock Line Prepack

Donaghys Nylon Dock lines have a water resistant coating to prevent strength loss that occurs when wet. Higher twisting of yarns and strands produces a denser, rounder rope with high abrasion resistance that is less likely to snag. Controlled manufacturing ensures a line that is well balanced, torque free and won't unlay under heavy loading.

• Convenient pre pack in 4.6m, 7.5m and 10.7m length options
• Includes spliced eye
• High strength shock absorbing nylon core
• For use as a mooring or anchor rope

Flexline 12 Dock line

Donaghys Flexline is an attractive 12 strand black Polyester docking braid with an abrasion protective coating.  Hollow in construction, this braid is highly efficient and simple to splice.

8 Strand Nylon Rope

Donaghys 8 strand nylon rope is heatset and will hold it's shape and size to ensure hassle free anchoring.  It flakes well into anchor wells and is much easier to stow than 3 strand anchor ropes.

• Low water absorption
• Nylon stretches, evening out load on anchors, making them less prone to dragging or releasing

Anchor Pack Nylon

Donaghys 3 strand nylon anchor pack comes complete with Stainless Steel thimble in one end.  This anchor warp will sink in water and has good strength and elasticity. The rope comes pre-spliced with a minimum of 4 tucks to ensure reliability.

Anchor Pack PE Silver Rope

Donaghys PE Silver Rope Anchor Pack is a 3 strand Polyethylene anchor pack, complete with Stainless Steel thimble in one end. This anchor rope comes pre-spliced with a minimum of 4 tucks to ensure reliability.

• 6mm - 12mm in 50m packs, 8mm - 12mm in 110m packs.

Anchor Pack PP Boat Rope

Donaghys PP Boat Rope Anchor Pack is a 3 strand polypropylene anchor pack, complete with Stainless Steel thimble in one end.  This anchor rope is pre-spliced with a minimum of 4 tucks to ensure reliability.

Polyester Rope

Donaghys' Polyester Rope is manufactured from Polyester fibre, the second strongest of conventional man-made fibres behind Nylon.  This rope has good strength, easy handling, coiling and knotting along with excellent abrasion resistance.  Polyester Rope is ideally suited to a wide range of general and industrial applications, including safety lines in the Height Safety sector.

Donaghys Winchline® is 8 times lighter and 70% stronger than Steel Wire rope. Coated with Donaghys Armorcoat, this braid has high abrasion resistance and can be customised with covers and fittings to suit specific applications.

• Virtually no recoil in the unlikely event of failure

Marine Soft Shackles

Donaghys' Soft Shackles are the perfect replacement for the traditional metal snap shackle and screw shackles. Soft Shackles are a versatile tool with many applications. The shackles are adjustable and made to connect strops or slings to vehicles, blocks or sheets on a boat.

Winchline Trailer Pull Rope

Donaghys' GP Superbraid features a high performance solution dyed UHMwPE core. This core can be exposed and will not fade for the life of the product.

Donaghys Superbraid is a high performance yacht braid developed through exhaustive testing on super yachts, Jules Verne, The Race, Whitbread, Volvo Ocean Race, America’s Cup, IOR, IMS, IMR and Olympic yachts.  This development programme has seen subtle but significant changes to Superbraid as fibre technology and manufacturing techniques improve. Blue Ocean Doublebraid

The same great performance qualities of our original Marlow Doublebraid, but manufactured using recycled polyester.

Halyards perform the specific task of hoisting sails aloft on Dinghies, Dayboats and Sailing Yachts

Halyards can be all rope, all wire or a combination of wire spliced to rope.

Historically, halyard lines were worked and secured at the mast base. However, it is becoming increasingly popular to lead the line aft via a mast base block back to a rope clutch fitted on the coaming for working in the relative safety of the cockpit.

Whichever system is used, the line usually travels up inside the mast to a turning point (sheave) above the desired hoist height of the sail. Here the halyard will exit the mast and come back to deck level outside the mast, ready for attachment to the sail.

There are some notable deviations from this set-up: Luggers, catboats, and yawls attach halyards externally to a gaff or spar which holds the sail aloft. Racing yachts may create a 2:1 purchase on the halyard by adding a turning block to the head of the sail. The halyard exits the mast and passes through the block before finally terminating at the masthead. The benefits are greater tension in the halyard and a reduced distance that the sail can come down under load (sometimes referred to as sag).

Hoisting a sail aboard a yacht usually requires assistance from a winch and a clutch or cleat to secure it aloft.

Most modern lines have a double braid construction designed to grip and withstand the abrasion created by these clutches and winches.

The intended type of sailing and the sail area will dictate the rope fibre, construction and diameter required.

Racing yachts tend to opt for a polyester line with a high-performance Dyneema core, while cruisers may find a 100% polyester line perfectly adequate.

Halyards are categorised into Cruising, Performance and Dinghy:

100% Polyester Lines with approximately 4%– 5% stretch

LIROS Braid on Braid EVO is the new generation, lower stretch, high-load version of LIROS Braid on Braid and by far the most popular rope for all running rigging applications.

Marlowbraid is the Marlow equivalent and sits broadly in the same category.

Cruising Dyneema is constructed from a Dyneema Core inside a Polyester Outer Jacket with approximately 2%-3% stretch

LIROS Dynamic Plus is by far the most popular line in this category with an SK78 core, extra inner plait construction for maintaining a stable form under load and 32plait close weave abrasion resistant polyester cover with several colour coded and full colour options.

Marlow D2 Club  (Cruising Dyneema) Cover: Durable 16plait polyester Core: Reduced content 12 strand Dyneema SK75 (lower specification than SK78) blended with lower grade fibre for shape retention delivers approximately 2.5-3% stretch

Racing Dyneema - = Dyneema Core with Polyester Outer Jacket with approximately 1%-1.5% stretch

LIROS Regatta 2000 is the premium racing performance solution recommended for halyards by the manufacturers, LIROS Yacht Ropes – Dyneema SK78 core, the enhanced abrasion resistance delivered by the Steel Blue coloured yarn is a significant advantage in harsh sailing conditions.

LIROS Racer 2001 is more widely known in the UK and delivers a similar performance featuring a specially engineered 32plait (6mm, 8mm 24plait) spin-dyed high tenacity polyester cover with a braided Dyneema SK78 core.

Marlow D2 Racing is the comparable Marlow alternative to LIROS Racer 2001 featuring a 24plait high tenacity polyester jacket with pre-stretched, colour matching, 12 strand Dyneema SK78 core.

LIROS Control XTR is the ultimate line for extreme (LIROS abbreviate extreme to XTR) conditions where the rigging will be pushed to the limit – Control XTR has a blended 32plait Technora/Polyester cover delivering exceptional grip, heat resilience, shape retention and abrasion resistance with a super pre-stretched and coated braided SK99 Dyneema core for the lowest possible stretch and highest break load.

Marlow D2 Grand Prix is the upgraded version of D2 Racing with a super pre-stretched Dyneema SK78 core and Technora/Polyester blended cover.

Dinghy Halyards can be selected by using a similar approach based on desired performance in terms of stretch, anti-twist handling and wear resistance

Cruising and Racing Dyneema Comparison

The Jimmy Green Marine Rigging Team can help specify your new halyard. The filters below should help guide you towards a suitable diameter line. Alternatively, you can send us a few inches of the old one for us to check. There is a rule of thumb for specifying the length required as shown below. If you are going to remove the old halyard, ensure that you attach a  Mousing Line to the end ready to reeve the new halyard.

Halyard Length - How to estimate the length of your halyard

Main Halyard - 2.2 x length of the mast Genoa Halyard - 2.3 x length of the mast Spinnaker or Gennaker Halyard - 2.3 x length of the mast Fractional Genoa Halyard - 2 x length of the mast Fractional Spinnaker Halyard - 2 x length of the mast

Advisory Reminder for halyards that are led back to the cockpit

Remember to add on the distance from the bottom of the mast into the cockpit including any deviation via turning blocks, turning sheaves and clutches.

N.B. The most accurate method is to measure the old halyard and make any necessary adjustments.

Remember to mouse a line through the mast to facilitate reeving the new halyard :-)

Jimmy Green Marine has a wide choice of ropes for cruising and racing, but it doesn't take long to get a quote. You can simply buy the rope cut to length or choose the splicing, whipping and shackle for Team Jimmy Green to complete the halyard. Some lines can be cover stripped for Ultimate Tapered Halyard Performance. You are welcome to send us your existing shackles to splice on for you.

A simple moulded part of good quality, supplied quickly and well packed.

Turned out that I had ordered the wrong make, my camcleats being Allen not Harken, however by drilling the two fixings holes out by 1mm and filing two small notches they fitted perfectly.

We have put the boat on this trolley but not yet used it for launch and recovery. First impressions are very good, It fits together well and is super easy to assemble - it's made to put together and take apart fast if you want to put it in a vehicle etc. It is very lightweight which should be a boon launching and recovering the boat - at the same time it looks strong and well made. Being aluminium we won't have a rust problem either. I was impressed how it fits perfectly wherever it supports the boat. So assuming it performs well in use we are pleased we got this. Good service, and fast delivery. Very happy with my large amount of assorted short lengths of rope of many different thicknesses for practising my knots.

Excellent sail, ideal for training and comes with a sailbag, Our only drawback was the long delivery time (2-3 weeks) and having to pay €90 in customs charges all due to Brexit! If Sailing Chandlery had a outlet here in the Republic or in Northern Ireland, business could get much better.

My Topper sails infinitely better with this new sail, , much faster, came with strap and eye at head, had to unpick and remove the strap to work with my halyard loop. David

I took advantage of the offcut sale to try out some of the more expensive ropes for my limited needs. I have not seen this kind of offer before, and I was able to find some lengths and qualities I would not normally worry about. Great service and sensible prices. Customer focused offers. I also plan to use some of the offcuts to improve my whipping and splicing. Does my son know he is being towed down the Thames with a rope that would be on the more expensive yachts with a breaking strength well over what we need, no. Does it matter - actually yes it does :)
