The Roses had a family reunion at the Emmy Awards 2024 !

Hosts Dan and Eugene Levy reunited with their former Schitt's Creek costars Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy onstage at the award show on Sunday, Sept. 15, delighting fans of the sitcom, which concluded in 2020. Murphy joined the Emmy hosts on stage to introduce O'Hara, who presented the final award of the night for outstanding comedy.

"Oh my gosh, it’s my TV sister Annie Murphy!" Dan said. "Hi everybody," Murphy replied.

"What's up, Annie?" he then asked, to which she responded, "Well they said the shining star of Schitt’s Creek is going to present the final award of the night, so..."

Eugene jumped in to clear things up, saying, "There’s been a little confusion here, Annie."

"I know, and that’s fine, you can stay on stage, but just kind of scooch back a little bit," Murphy said in true Alexis Rose fashion.

When Dan broke the news that they were going to be presenting the "shining star" of their show, Murphy broke character and announced O'Hara's entrance.

"Please welcome our favorite TV mom," she exclaimed.

On the comedy, Eugene played patriarch Johnny Rose, O'Hara his wife Moira, Dan their son David and Murphy their daughter Alexis.

The sitcom found great success at the Emmys during its run from 2015 to 2020, and Murphy previously opened up to PEOPLE about how different her life was before she got cast on the show.

“Just before  Schitt’s Creek , things were quite bleak,” she recalled in 2020. “My house had just burnt down, I had like, $3 in my bank account, I hadn’t worked in close to two years. And I had just blown my very first screen test — like blown it, blown it, blown it.”

“I found myself crying in the Pacific Ocean, a very snotty cry, and the universe was like, ‘Don’t do this anymore. This is not for you!'” she continued. “But then, two days later, I got the audition for  Schitt’s Creek .”

O'Hara has also shared her love for the show, even going as far as to say she'd return for a reboot.

“I would love to,” she shared with PEOPLE in January . “We did a bit of a tour after we finished the show, and it was so much fun. I'd love to just be with them all again. Doing a movie would be wonderful. Yeah, I hope it happens."

She went on to compliment her castmates and the crew, who she said she had "such a lovely experience" with for the entirety of the show.

“It's such a gift to work with people with whom you can collaborate," she said. "And they wrote such great scripts, and it was just so fun and so lovely. And really, I hate to say  COVID  was good for anything, but we really lucked out with Netflix showing the show."

PEOPLE also caught up with the father-son hosting duo prior to the Emmys , and Eugene said they were hoping that the awards show "will have enough laughs, enough charm, enough goodwill and enough love for the medium that gave both my son and myself a start in this business."

"My dad and I are not stand-up comics, so we're coming at it from a very different place," Dan added. "But we're both really hard workers and we're determined to make it as great as it can possibly be. We want to create an atmosphere that feels really welcome and celebratory. This is a huge night in so many people's lives and we just want to be there to kind of make it as festive as possible for everybody."

Eugene and Dan Levy Open the Emmys With Playful Jokes

The father-and-son acting duo share a self-deprecating and inoffensive rapport — a fitting mix for prime-time television.

Two men in tuxedos and thick-framed glasses.

  • Sept. 15, 2024

Eugene and Dan Levy , the father-and-son acting duo best known for the sitcom “Schitt’s Creek,” opened the Emmy Awards on Sunday with playful digs at the changing television industry and its audience, calling the ceremony “broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.”

“The creators of ‘Shogun’ actually had their scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten and then translated back into English subtitles that you missed because you were also on your phone watching Sabrina Carpenter eat a hot wing,” joked Dan Levy, referring to one of one of the top contenders for best drama series.

The Levys’ rapport is self-deprecating and inoffensive — a fitting mix for prime-time television.

“I wouldn’t actually even call us hosts — we’re more like actors acting like hosts,” Dan Levy said.

The actors drew their own accolades from the Television Academy as creators and stars of “Schitt’s Creek,” which earned them both acting Emmys. In 2020, Dan Levy became the first performer to collect four Emmys during a prime-time telecast — for writing, directing, best supporting actor and for best comedy.

The hosts poked at one of the most nominated shows, “The Bear,” after some in the industry have questioned whether it qualifies a comedy.

“In the true spirit of ‘The Bear,’ we will not make any jokes,” Eugene Levy said.

"Schitt's Creek" cast reunites at the 2024 Emmys

Holy Schitt!

“Schitt’s Creek” co-creators, stars, and father and son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy reunited with Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy at the very end of the Emmys 2024 ceremony on Sunday night.

Murphy, 37, came on stage to join Eugene, 77, and Dan, 41, for a hilarious bit.

“They said the shining star of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ was going to present the final award of the night,” she said.

“There’s been a little confusion, Annie,” Eugene said, as Murphy jokingly told the Levys to move over so she could have her moment in the spotlight.

Dan then broke the news to Murphy that O’Hara, 70, would be presenting the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, which went to “Hacks.”

Catherine O'Hara at the 2024 Emmy Awards

Afterwards, the foursome stood on stage together to close out the show.

Sadly, “Schitt’s Creek: The Movie” was not announced at the Emmys 2024 as fans were hoping.

Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy and Dan Levy

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards stage was a fitting place for the “Schitt’s Creek” reunion. The show set an Emmys record in 2020 when it won seven primetime Emmy awards and nine Emmys in total, the most-ever for a comedy series in a single year at that time (“The Bear” broke that record at the last Emmys ceremony with 10 total wins).

Dan and Euegen Levy surprised Emmys viewers when they revealed on Sunday that a "Schitt's Creek" movie is in the works.

The beloved comedy series’ 2020 wins included some of the Emmys’ most coveted prizes, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor (Eugene Levy,) Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Catherine O’Hara,) Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Annie Murphy,) and Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Dan Levy).

Catherine O'Hara accepts the award for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for "Schitt's Creek" during the 72nd Emmy Awards broadcast on September 20, 2020.

“Schitt’s Creek” debuted on Canadian broadcaster CBC in 2015 and officially went off the air in April 2020 after six seasons .

Emmys producers gave away the Levys’ surprise slightly in the lead-up to Sunday’s ceremony, revealing that the awards would emphasize nostalgia for fan-favorite TV characters.

“You’re gonna get everything that you want from [Dan and Eugene Levy] in that opening,” producer Jesse Collins told Variety on Thursday. “I want to say the opening segment that they’re going to bring to the show is going to set a great tone.”

"Schitt's Creek" premiered in 2015.

“This is material that has been developed between them,” Collins added of Dan and Eugene’s Emmys opener. “They’ve never done this before, and there’s never been a father and son team hosting the Emmys. I think everybody’s going to love it.”

Another signal that something “Schitt”-y was brewing was O’Hara being announced as one of the night’s presenters.

Before Sunday, O’Hara said she hoped the original cast would reunite for a “Schitt’s” movie.

Eugene Levy and Dan Levy attend the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards at L.A. LIVE on September 19, 2021 in Los Angeles, California.

“I would love to,” she told People in January. “We did a bit of a tour after we finished the show, and it was so much fun. I’d love to just be with them all again.”

“Doing a movie would be wonderful,” she added. “Yeah, I hope it happens.”

“I get asked this all the time,” Dan said that same month while speaking with UK radio station Heart . “You will absolutely know if and when I’m doing a ‘Schitt’s Creek’ movie.

“I love the way we ended the show; I feel such pride in the way that we ended the show,” he continued. “I don’t right now feel the impulse to risk doing anything to that wonderful thing we all made, so I will be the first person to tell you if we are doing a movie or some kind of continuation of the story.”

Catherine O'Hara had signaled she would love to do a "Schitt's Creek" movie.

“The ‘Schitt’s Creek’ movie is a big TBD,” he added.

Series producer Andrew Barnsley shared Dan’s sentiments in an interview last August but did not confirm that a movie was something he had discussed with Dan and Eugene.

“It’s something that we know there’s demand and interest for it, really. It’s something that I know Dan and Eugene [Levy] are considering all the time, and I think it’s going to be a timing thing,” he told The Messenger.

Annie Murphy, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy on a 2017 episode of "Schitt's Creek." All three stars will reprise their roles in the "Schitt's Creek" movie.

He added, “The fear is: does it tarnish the legacy to go back and revisit them in the way that maybe the ‘Entourage’ movie did?”

On more than one occasion, Murphy had signaled she was willing and eager to reprise her role as Alexis Schitt.

“Of course. Come on. Of course I would,” she told Today in June 2023 when asked if she would do a “Schitt’s Creek” movie.

“If you want to start writing strongly worded letters to Daniel [Levy], I encourage it,” she said in an interview with Parade.com . “I miss everyone so much. So, yeah, fingers crossed.”

O-Yachts Class 4

dan levy o yachts

The O-Yachts Class 4 is the smaller sister to the Class 6, designed by Érik Lerouge and built in Latvia under the direction of Dan Levy. The forward profile is classic Lerouge with the bowsprit and curved forward beam in carbon, fine, straight bows, and a shapely nacelle.

Clifford Denn added his input in designing the rounded coachroof to minimise windage and the overall curved look of the saloon;

Lerouge Fast Cat Érik Lerouge studied in Southampton in the seventies, and designed his first catamaran : Inoui, not long after. He has successfully raced his designs in events all over the world including Speed Weeks, Bol d’Or, Trophee des Multicoques, the MULTI 2000 Challenge, Transat des Alizes, and the Sydney Harbour 18 footers Worlds.

The Class 4 is semi-customisable and is available with keels (like the Nautitech 44 Open but faster) or daggerboards (like the Outremer 45 but lighter).

Daggerboards give you optimum performance upwind in light airs (another 5 degrees into wind), fixed keels are safer in the even of a collision under the water, and free up room down below without sacrificing too much performance, especially when the wind picks up. In over 15 kts of wind you won’t notice much difference in performance

Other options include a rotating mast (carbon), fixed carbon or fixed aluminium mast with different sail plans.

Érik Lerouge has done a fine job on the hydrodynamic shaping of the hulls: this is a quick boat. A class 4 was the first placed multihull in the 2014 ARC with a maximum logged speed of 27kts. This boat is about as far away as you can get from a Bali Catspace Sail or other production cruising catamarans. She competes against yachts like the Outremer 45 and is quite a bit lighter (7.5T versus 8.2T)

Construction

This area is worth some discussion, as it is one of the aspects of the Class 4 that differentiates it from the competition.

The nacelle, hulls, deck and coachroof are sandwich infused and laminated by hand, and are solidly assembled. A layer of Kevlar is used to strengthen  the underwater sections. Forward beam, main bulkhead, compression beam and bowsprit are all built in carbon fiber, making a stiff, light structure. Everything up front is hand laminated to optimise strength and rigidity in this area.

With a 7.2T light displacement, the Class 4 is one of the lightest bluewater sailing catamarans on the market:  a real sailing machine, with safety at sea a key part of the philosophy.

Carbon is used as standard on the front beam, bowsprit, mast support, mast beam. They also add a Kevlar shield (center to peak / 8inch over water line).

Carbon Forward beam / Bowsprit Erik LEROUGE insisted on a complete carbon beam connection between the hulls and the central link to the boat. On most catamrans, the forward beam is  a bolted 7 inch tube. On the Class 4, you have 28 Layers of carbon linking to the hull side and another 28 layers of carbon from bow pole to platform along the trampoline center. This helps to give the boat its high rigidity and low weight.

Hand lamination on infused panels All non structural panels also help with the rigity (sofa, stairs, floors, kitchen, cabinets). The panels are first built on an infusion table and are then hand laminated before fairing/sanding to make the Class 4 as solid as a rock.

The key point here is that O-Yachts are unique in this market segment in offering a carbon reinforced structure as standard. Carbon is used for the front and central beams, bowsprit, mast support and beam, and aft beam. As standard, they also use kevlar as a shield on hull.

Living Space

dan levy o yachts

The saloon is very comfortable (4.5m by 3.15m) with plenty of space for cooking, navigating and lounging: the furniture is constructed  in sandwich with aluminum trim and a quality finish. The room inside is somewhere between an Outremer 45 and a 51.

The nav station faces forwards to port and looks very business like.

Semi-Custom There are custom options available for the saloon door (large central or side sliding door), the layout of the saloon and the bimini (long or short).

Down below, both aft cabins have large berths (1.40m/1.60m x 2m).

The other unique design feature to the Class 4 is the aft platform (4.5m x 1.1m). While this does reduce the area of the aft cockpit, it means that you can hoist your dinghy safely onto the boat while under way and it doubles up as a sunbathing area / diving platform while at anchor.

Traditional davits are also an option for the tender.

Carbon Davits Option

dan levy o yachts

A nice touch on the carbon davits is that they have been designed to tuck your tender into so that it is really secure under way

dan levy o yachts

These boats are strong and very rigid and the systems have been set up for easy management by a couple.

An Efficient Design The halyards and reefing lines are tidily managed at the mast with two winches, one being electric. Friction on the lines is minimised: although you will need to leave the cockpit to shorten sail, this set up means that you are able to lock the lines close to the action. This is Form Follows Function design.

There are 2 options for the mainsail, with a bigger Premium version available for owners looking for higher performance. The baot is powered up front with a self tacking-solent and an overlapping genoa that flies off the bowsprit. These should power you along at true wind speeds and even above.

The sail plan is traditional, but there are also plenty of options for flying lighter sails from the bowsprit. A carbon Axon rotating mast option boosts the power with a larger square-topped mainsail and along with fiber shrouds and high quality fittings, the whole package is one of an over engineered design with that trademark of Lerouge designs: low windage and high rigidity

That rotating mast (an option) also makes it easier to reef just off the wind with the solent semi-powered by the way.

In light winds, this boat is designed to sail faster than the wind from 3 to 9kts, so you should be sailing more and motoring less. When the wind is blowing from 10 to 15kts, you will be cruising over 10kts, and in 20-25kts, you will be sailing from 14 to 19kts with shortened sail.

Class 4 Sail Plans

Options include a cruising aluminium mast, a performance fixed carbon mast and a race rotating carbon mast.

dan levy o yachts

Heading aft, the cockpit  feels very safe with it’s wrap around bench. There are options for a full bimini to maximise protection or a shortened version for those who like the maximum view of the sails. There’s a fixed table that seats 8 to port with a large opening window to connect to the galley. The area to starboard has been kept clear (Dan calls this the dancefloor) and the most popular helm position is just a short hop up in the main bulkhead poistion starboard.

Power Options

There are 3 options on the Class 4:

  • 100% Diesel : 2 Yanmar 30hp on saildrive.
  • Smart Hybrid : 1 Yanmar 30hp on saildrive + 1 electric engine (10 or 15kW).
  • 100% Electric: 2 electric engines from 10 to 15kW. With a Diesel 48V generator for safety.

With the diesels, you should hit 7kts cruising on 1 engine in a good sea state.

Electric Power Two Class 4s have already been configured with electric 10kW Ocean Volt engines that push the boat along at 6kts with 6kW in good conditions with one engine. The OceanVolt engines have a “ServoProp” solution for regeneration. The self pitch propeller is also 10 to 15% more efficient when motoring.

There are also options for more advanced solutions such as retractable pods with RIM BlueNav engines that rotate 360°.

The O-Yachts Class 4 is a 45 foot catamaran designed for safety at speed by one of the legends of multihull design: Erik Lerouge, and built under the direction of Dan Levy: a fanatic on the details. With her semi-carbon construction as standard, this is a well organised, strong and rigid catamaran that gives you plenty of bang for your buck. The target on this yacht is 250 safe mile days in good conditions, in the same bracket as a Fusion 40 catamaran or a Schionning but with a more robust construction.

You can find further information at O-Yachts .

The best-dressed stars on the Emmys 2024 red carpet

Lucky us: This year, we get a rare second edition of the Emmy Awards . Usually held in September, the annual ceremony was postponed last year due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes affecting the TV industry at the time. So here we are again, after an Emmy-less 2023, celebrating 2024 with a bonus Emmys — and bonus Emmys fashion. If the celebs get to double-dip, so do we.

The best-dressed stars arrived to the 76th Emmys, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, in sumptuous, color-drenched looks: head-to-toe pinks, glittering emeralds, regal navy blues. Read on below for our favorite looks from the evening.

Maya Rudolph

Maya Rudolph wore a silk mousseline ruffled dress by the French brand Chloé for the second time in recent days, which tickled me. Every cool woman in Hollywood is wearing Chloé right now — as well as Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Rudolph will return to portray this season on “Saturday Night Live.” Is Rudolph giving us a subtle preview of her method acting approach? — Rachel Tashjian

Dan Levy and Eugene Levy

I’m not sure whether the juxtaposition of these two red-carpet looks — the younger Levy’s sculptural, ethereal blouse, the elder’s staid double-breasted suit and tie — is an homage to the two hosts’ buttoned-up-father and sartorially experimental-son characters on “Schitt’s Creek,” or an indication of just how autobiographical that show really was. Either way, they make a charmingly incongruous pair, visually and otherwise. — Ashley Fetters Maloy

Hannah Einbinder

On the most recent season of “Hacks,” Hannah Einbinder’s character as comedy writer Ava Daniels took on new depth. Einbinder’s red-carpet look — a pale pink Louis Vuitton draped gown that, to my eyes, evoked an elevated revamp of early Rodarte — reflected growth within her character and her career. She’s still funny, but is a serious force to be reckoned with. — Shane O’Neill

Jacqueline Novak

Not only did Jacqueline Novak make one of the funniest comedy specials of the year out of a notoriously taboo topic, she also pulled a gorgeous, playfully feminine look out of an unusual shade: matte, cement gray. This could have looked like bedsheets. It looks like a million bucks. Her high-wire act pays off again. — A.F.M.

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts wore an absolutely perfect strapless green dress by Balenciaga. The quality of the emerald silk fabric, plus the precision of the bust line and hem, are extraordinary. She said the dress was an homage to her role as Babe Paley in “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” for which she was nominated for best actress, limited series or TV movie. Paley had a notoriously judicious way of attiring herself, and I’d say Watts lived up to the challenge. — R.T.

Nominated for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” Bowen Yang wore Bode: a cream-colored suit paired with a red V-neck tunic with silver beading and a zigzag hemline. I love how formal and special-occasion this decidedly not-a-tux still feels! — A.F.M.

Ayo Edebiri

Ayo Edebiri name-dropped Italian designer Gaetano Pesce on the Emmys red carpet! Nominated for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for “The Bear,” she told Laverne Cox that her dress is a custom design by Italian luxury house Bottega Veneta, whose designer, Matthieu Blazy, collaborated with the late Pesce before he died earlier this year. According to Edebiri, her stylist Danielle Goldberg said the white column dress, scattered with red, black and yellow paillettes, reminded her of Pesce’s work. — R.T.

Ella Purnell

I love seeing bold moves on the red carpet — both Dan Levy’s and Greta Lee’s Loewe looks tonight come to mind — but Ella Purnell, who appears in the outstanding drama series nominee “Fallout,” was a reminder that there’s no need to overthink red-carpet glamour. Her shimmering silver Rabanne gown was glitzy but elegant, projecting the kind of confidence and ease that reminds us that stars are blessedly not at all like us. — S.O.

Starmer and meloni holding talks on curbing migrant boats reaching uk and italy.

ROME – U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is meeting Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni in Rome on Monday, as the two very different politicians, from left and right, seek common cause to curb migrants reaching their shores by boat . The visit comes after at least eight seaborne migrants died off the French coast over the weekend.

Support for Ukraine is also on the agenda for the trip, part of Starmer’s effort to reset relations with European neighbors after Britain’s acrimonious 2020 departure from the European Union.

Recommended Videos

The center-left Labour Party prime minister isn't a natural ally of Meloni, who heads the far-right Brothers of Italy party. But migration has climbed the U.K. political agenda, and Starmer hopes Italy's tough approach can help him stop people fleeing war and poverty trying to cross the English Channel in flimsy, overcrowded boats.

More than 22,000 migrants have made the perilous crossing from France so far this year, a slight increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Several dozen people have perished in attempts, including the eight killed when a boat carrying some 60 people ran aground on rocks late Saturday. The same day, 14 boats carrying 801 migrants reached Britain.

Starmer promised “a new era of international enforcement to dismantle these networks, protect our shores and bring order to the asylum system.”

“No more gimmicks,” he said before his trip to Rome — a reference to the previous Conservative government’s scuttled plan to send some asylum-seekers on a one-way trip to Rwanda .

Meloni pledged a crackdown on migration after taking office in 2022, aiming to deter would-be refugees from paying smugglers to make the dangerous Mediterranean crossing to Italy. Her nationalist conservative government has signed deals with individual African countries to block departures, imposed limits on the work of humanitarian rescue ships, cracked down on traffickers and taken measures to deter people from setting off.

Italy also has signed a deal with Albania under which some adult male migrants rescued at sea while trying to reach Italy would be taken instead to Albania while their asylum claims are processed.

The number of migrants arriving in Italy by boat in the first half of this year was down 60% from 2023, according to the country’s Interior Ministry.

Starmer wants to learn from Italy’s mix of tough enforcement and international cooperation, though Italy's approach has been criticized by refugee groups and others alarmed by Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules , growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants.

The leader of Italy's right-wing League, Matteo Salvin i, who is deputy prime minister in Meloni's government, has been accused by prosecutors of alleged kidnapping for for his decision to prevent a rescue ship carrying more than 100 migrants from landing in Italy when he was interior minister in 2019.

British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper defended the government's decision to seek advice from Italy's right-wing administration, saying “we’ve always had a history of working with governments that have different political parties that are not aligned.”

She said the U.K. was interested in Italy's experience in fighting organized crime, as well as its deals with countries such as Tunisia to stop migrants' journeys before they reach the sea, and its deal with Albania.

“I don’t think it’s immoral to go after the criminal gangs," Cooper told the BBC. "Quite the opposite. I think it’s actually a moral imperative to make sure that we are pursuing the criminal gangs who are putting lives at risk.”

Starmer toured Italy’s National Coordination Center for Immigration in Rome with newly appointed U.K. Border Security Commander Martin Hewitt. The government says Hewitt, a former head of Britain’s National Police Chiefs’ Council, will work with law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the U.K. and across Europe to tackle-people smuggling networks.

Soon after being elected in July , Starmer scrapped the Conservatives’ contentious plan to send asylum-seekers who cross the Channel to Rwanda, about 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) away, with no chance of returning to the U.K. even if their refugee claims were successful.

The Conservatives said the deportation plan would act as a deterrent, but refugee and human rights groups called it unethical, judges ruled it illegal and Starmer dismissed it as an expensive gimmick. He has, though, expressed an interest in striking agreements like the one Italy has with Albania that would see asylum-seekers sent temporarily to another country.

The Rome trip follows visits to Paris, Berlin and Dublin during Starmer’s first weeks in office — all part of efforts to restore ties with EU neighbors that have been frayed by Brexit. Starmer has ruled out rejoining the now 27-nation bloc, but is keen for a closer relationship on security and other issues.

Ukraine will also feature in his talks with the Italian government, which holds the presidency of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations this year.

Unlike some politicians on the European right, Meloni is a staunch supporter of Ukraine . Starmer meets her after returning from Washington, where he and U.S. President Joe Biden discussed Ukraine’s plea to use Western-supplied missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pressing allies to allow his forces to use Western weapons to target air bases and launch sites inside Russia as Moscow steps up assaults on Ukraine’s electricity grid and utilities before winter. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that would mean NATO countries “are at war with Russia.”

So far, the U.S. hasn't announced a change to its policy of allowing Kyiv to use American-provided weapons only in a limited area inside Russia’s border with Ukraine.

Dan Levy dishes on Schitt's Creek 's final season, LGBTQ representation, and drag queens

dan levy o yachts

"I'm a terrible drinker," corrects the writer and actor, who can be seen in Entertainment Weekly 's LGBTQ special issue . "I order cosmos. I mix and match. I don't know what goes with what. Everyone says, 'You can't drink wine and liquor.' I do…within reason, obviously."

Doing things within reason isn't something Schitt's Creek fans are used to seeing from Levy. The 35-year-old co-created and stars on the CBC/Pop TV series, which centers on the ridiculously wealthy, cosmopolitan Rose family—businessman Johnny (co-creator and Levy's father, Eugene Levy); former soap star Moira (Catherine O'Hara); and their socialite kids, David (Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy)—who lose their fortune and move to the small town of Schitt's Creek.

Sliding into a booth at the Black Cat, his favorite spot in Los Angeles' Silver Lake neighborhood, Levy discusses writing David as pansexual, why he's ending the series after next year's season 6, and what it was like being raised by his American Pie dad—all over a trio of seemingly mismatched cocktails. (A Negroni, a Moscow Mule, and a whiskey on the rocks, to be exact.)

Where did you get the idea for Schitt's Creek ? Honestly, and this is the drink kicking in, it came from being a terrible auditioner. I'd been working at MTV [in Canada as a host of The Hills ' after-show and others] for about seven years and came to L.A. to try and act. I've always been a pretty ambitious person and thought, "If I'm not going to get [a job] in an audition room, I'm going to get it a different way." So I started to brainstorm ideas for a television show. I had avoided going to my dad for help over the course of my short career out of fear of the nepotism headline. But I felt like this premise had to be explored through a comedic lens that was slightly more specialized, the kind he and Christopher Guest had done writing the mockumentaries [like 2000's Best in Show ]. We started to explore the show and very quickly realized there was something there we wanted to say.

Where did the title come from? The name came from my dad, who'd had a very funny conversation with one of his friends. I think it was one of those boozy conversations you have over a dinner where they started talking about a town where there would be, like, Schitt Hardware and Schitt whatever it is. And he thought, "What if [the Roses] bought the town because of its funny, terrible name?" And that really stuck with us. A lot of networks were suggesting, "Why don't you change it to Up a Creek ?" or other plays on the name, but that was never really what we wanted.

You identify as a gay man but decided your character would identify as pansexual. Why was that important to you? When you break down a character, certain things just appear. And there's something exciting about exploring things that haven't necessarily been represented on television before. But I knew we never wanted it to be a "teachable moment." We made a conscious choice that his sexuality would never be in danger—that the town was going to be completely accepting of everybody. I wanted to show a projection of our own world that was kinder, show how much people can grow and the capacity with which people can love when they are not fearing for their lives. We never really tackle politics on the show, but in a way, that was the political stand I took.

What fan feedback do you get about David's relationship with Patrick [Noah Reid]? A lot of straight people have told me they were surprised to realize they had certain beliefs that they now see, by way of watching the show, were not good or helpful or constructive. But getting to interact with my [LGBTQ] community—and hear how the show has made a positive impact or changed the conversation with their family—has been remarkable. I'm proud that we've put something out into the world that seems to be effecting change in a good way.

The show has been on CBC and Pop TV since 2015, and in 2017 past seasons became available on Netflix. When did you realize the show's fandom was reaching a fever pitch? I guess it was this year, or maybe around season 4 [in 2018]. The show has been well-known in Canada for some time, but it's only been in the last little while that I've been walking down the street in the U.S. and people have come up and said either "I love your show" or "Thank you." I never know what to say. "Um…you're welcome?" But, I think because we're Canadian, it all comes with a grain of salt and we all know it could go away tomorrow. We're still just that little team up in Canada just trying to get a show made.

So why make season 6 the end? I had always known that that was the case. In fact, I had thought it was going to be five. Then we were given the opportunity to do two more seasons, and I thought, "Okay, I can tell the end of this story in 28 episodes." I feel really confident that we've really mined everything we could. But the world doesn't explode at the end of it. If there is something that comes up down the line that feels compelling enough to bring our troupe back together and continue to tell a story, so be it. I'm not one to lay down the iron fist and say, "This is it forever." This is just it for now.

What's your craziest fan experience? I love how much drag culture has embraced Moira Rose. We did a live show in Washington and a local bar had this night called "The Night of a Thousand Moiras." They were all going to see us live and had shown up in drag as Moira. We ended up surprising them and guest-judging their drag show. That was really fun.

And you have some celebrity fans. You get Carol Burnett saying she's binge-watching your show and that she loves it; if I do nothing else in this life, I've done something right. And Mariah Carey has tweeted [about the show]. I mean, I had posters of her on my walls in high school. It's wild.

You've said you're not a baker, so why sign on to host the first two seasons of The Great Canadian Baking Show ? I was in the thick of binging The Great British Baking Show and I tweeted and said, "If it ever comes to Canada, I would love to throw my hat in the ring as a host." And then I woke up the next morning to 50 text messages and emails saying "It is coming to Canada, would you like to host it?" And then two weeks later, I had signed on. I'm not doing [the upcoming third season] because we couldn't make it work with my schedule, but I love the purity to the show. Everyone's competing for a cake plate. The simplicity of that was so wonderful that I wanted to be a part of it.

What was it like growing up with a father who became America's dad with 1999's American Pie ? I wish I was more confident back then because I really would've owned it, but I was insecure and I didn't like the attention. I was dressed to go to the premiere of American Pie and a friend of mine had seen a sneak preview and was like, "Do not see that with your parents." And I backed out. Having that movie come out while I was in high school, I got a lot of idiots saying, "Ooh. Is that a story about your life?" And in my mind, I was like, "I would kill to have a life that's interesting enough to turn into a movie. No, thank you… and no, I didn't f— a pie."

Birth name: daniel joseph levy, birth date: august 9, 1983, age: 41 years old, birth place: toronto, ontario, canada, parents: eugene levy, siblings: sarah levy.

IMDB

Canadian actor-writer-producer Daniel Levy parlayed his initial screen fame as a host for MTV Canada into a successful second career as creator and co-star of the offbeat Canadian sitcom "Schitt's Creek" (CBC, 2015- ). Born Daniel Joseph Levy on August 9, 1983 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of Canadian comedy icon Eugene Levy of "SCTV" (Global/CBC/NBC/Superchannel/Cinemax, 1976-1984) fame and writer Deborah Divine.

Though he studied theater and improvisational comedy during his school years, Levy's big break came as an on-air host for MTV Canada's "MTV Live" (2006-2012) and "The After Show," an umbrella title for talk show-styled programming after several of MTV's reality series like "The Hills" (MTV, 2006-2010). His popularity on those programs translated to hosting duties for CTV's coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, but Levy's true interest lay in acting, and after "MTV Live" ran its course, he began pursuing a career in that field through appearances on the long-running Canadian series "Degrassi: The Next Generation" (CTV/MuchMusic/MTV Canada, 2001-2015) and in independent features.

In 2013, he teamed with his father and uncle, Fred Levy, to form a production company, called Not a Real Company Productions, which created and produced a comedy pilot for CBC. The show, about a wealthy and obnoxious family who rebound from financial ruin by funding the development of a rural town, became "Schitt's Creek," with Eugene and Dan Levy playing the family patriarch and his sexually ambiguous son, respectively, and Eugene's former "SCTV" co-star, Catherine O'Hara, as his wife.

The series netted numerous awards and nominations from Canadian critical groups, with Dan Levy winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing in a Comedy Series or Program and sharing Best Comedy Series with his father and uncle, both in 2016. The following year, he was announced as the co-host of "The Great Canadian Baking Show" (CBC, 2017- ).
