As a true explorer, the layout features plenty of opportunities to take in all the sights, with observation lounge on the crow’s nest at a height of 11 metres, complete with a steering station, and another one on the sundeck. The master stateroom on the main deck comes with a spacious personal office that doubles as another observation lounge. The Global 550 combines exploration with wellbeing and features spa with sauna and hammam in the transom. The yacht also boasts a fully commercially helipad on the main deck allowing to carry your own helicopter for further mobility and safety. Dynamiq Yachts Global 550 - 55m Explorer Yacht

Dynamiq yachts introduces the global 550, a contemporary and versatile 55m explorer yacht that embodies understated luxury. this 55-meter superyacht revolutionizes unrestricted global travel and offers a compelling alternative to similar vessels..

Setting a new benchmark for efficiency, the Global 550 features a robust yet lightweight all-aluminum hull. It is propelled by two remarkably efficient 625 kW Volvo Penta heavy-duty engines, enabling it to achieve an impressive transatlantic range of over 5,000 nautical miles on a single fuel tank. As a true explorer, it boasts exceptional autonomy, with a substantial 21,000-liter capacity for fresh water and ample storage spaces distributed throughout the yacht.

The yacht’s specifications include cutting-edge technologies that ensure unparalleled comfort on board. Unlike the industry standard of two stabilizer fins, the Global 550 is equipped with four, in addition to a Hull Vane, resulting in exceptional pitch and roll reduction and providing a smooth sailing experience for clients, regardless of sea conditions. Furthermore, the yacht’s environmental impact is significantly minimized through the utilization of smaller IMO Tier III engines and a battery system, as well as the incorporation of state-of-the-art exhaust gas and water treatment filtration solutions.

The most notable aspect of this superyacht is the meticulous focus on nature observation. Each deck has panoramic lounges, with the highest one at the crow’s nest. Additionally, the yacht is equipped with underwater drones and a telescope to enhance the experience. Other impressive features include a fully certified helipad for commercial use, a luxurious spa area with a hammam and sauna, and a spacious owner’s office on the main deck that also serves as an observation lounge. What sets this yacht apart is that these features have been ingeniously incorporated within a compact space of under 500 GT.

Dynamiq 55m Eco Explorer Yacht Global 550

Another significant aspect of this project is the introduction of ZROBIM architects, renowned residential designers, into the realm of yachting. They have successfully applied their land-based design expertise to create superyacht interiors.

During their collaboration with Dynamiq, ZROBIM architects have greatly emphasized the concept of understated luxury. This concept is rooted in the notion that affluent consumers have shifted their priorities and behaviors towards a more environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle.

In light of this, ZROBIM architects have delved into the emerging “natural minimalism” trend. Incorporating natural elements such as American oak, wenge, and dark Shimo ash into the design has prevented the interiors from becoming cold and austere. Instead, they have created a warm, tactile, and embracing atmosphere. Given that the superyacht is intended for long journeys in cold waters, ZROBIM architects aimed to ensure that this extended voyage would evoke a sense of home, a connection to the earth, and an association with comfort, coziness, and mental well-being even in the most remote corners of the world.

Dynamiq 55m Eco Explorer Yacht Interior Design

The yacht’s interior is characterized by the individuality and unique ambiance achieved by incorporating art objects crafted from aged wood and wall decorations featuring textured wooden panels of various shapes. These elements enhance the yacht’s aesthetics and serve the purpose of zoning the space. The seamless integration of the exterior and interior is achieved through the full-height windows and large outdoor terraces that offer breathtaking views of the sea. The natural surroundings perfectly complement this super-technological and modern facility for sea travel.

The esteemed Monaco-based studio Dobroserdov Design executed the yacht’s exterior design. At the same time, the naval architecture was entrusted to the long-term Dynamiq partners, Vripack Design, who have applied the highest Dutch standards in engineering this superyacht. The construction time for the Global 550 is estimated to be 30 months from the signing of the contract. This BV commercial and fully REG-compliant superyacht is currently listed for 27,900,000 EUR, valid until the end of 2023.

Dynamiq Unveils a Visionary Eco-Explorer

  • September 22, 2023

A superyacht builder Dynamiq is making waves with its latest creation – the Global 550. This 55-meter superyacht is a modern-age go-anywhere explorer with a penchant for subtle luxury. From its efficient design to its environmentally friendly features, the Global 550 is redefining what it means to explore the open seas in style.

A Monaco-Based Masterpiece

The exterior design of the Global 550 was executed by the renowned Monaco-based studio, Dobroserdov Design. Its sleek lines and contemporary aesthetics give the yacht a distinct and captivating look that turns heads in any marina. But the true magic lies beneath the surface.

Efficiency Redefined

One of the standout features of the Global 550 is its impressive efficiency. Powered by two highly efficient 625 kW Volvo Penta heavy-duty engines, this superyacht can cover an astonishing transatlantic range on just one tank, surpassing 5,000 nautical miles. Such range provides the freedom to explore remote corners of the world, making it a true explorer’s dream.

Autonomy and Comfort

This superyacht boasts an impressive 21,000-liter freshwater tank and ample storage spaces throughout the yacht, ensuring autonomy during extended journeys. Comfort is paramount, and the Global 550 spares no expense in this department. Four stabilizer fins, twice the industry norm, coupled with a Hull Vane, guarantee a smooth and stable ride, regardless of sea conditions.

Environmental Responsibility

Dynamiq takes environmental responsibility seriously. To reduce its environmental footprint, the Global 550 employs smaller IMO Tier III engines and a cutting-edge battery system. Additionally, advanced filtration solutions for exhaust gases and water treatment further contribute to its eco-friendly profile.

Nature Observation at its Finest

For nature enthusiasts, the Global 550 offers unparalleled opportunities for observation. Panoramic lounges grace every deck, with the highest one perched atop the crow’s nest. Underwater drones and a telescope enhance the experience, bringing you closer to the wonders of the natural world.

Luxury Beyond Measure

Beyond its exploratory prowess, the Global 550 also redefines luxury. A fully commercially-certified helipad, a lavish spa area complete with a hammam and sauna, and a spacious owner’s office that doubles as an observation lounge are just a few of its indulgent features. Remarkably, all of this luxury is packed into a yacht measuring under 500 gross tons.

ZROBIM Architects: Pioneers in Yacht Interior Design

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Global 550 is the entry of ZROBIM architects, known for their expertise in modern residential design, into the world of yacht interiors. Their focus on “natural minimalism” aligns with the shifting priorities of high-end consumers towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyles.

Natural Elements and Cozy Comfort

ZROBIM architects have brought natural elements like American oak, wenge, and dark Shimo ash into the yacht’s interior, creating a luxurious and inviting ambiance. The design draws inspiration from glaciers and remote mountain ranges, evident in the use of stone with varying textures and complex combinations of marble.

Artistic Touches

Art objects made of aged wood and textured wooden panels not only add to the aesthetic appeal but also serve functional purposes by zoning the yacht’s interior. Large windows and outdoor terraces blend the interior with the exterior, enhancing the feeling of being one with the sea.

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

Two small boats with outboard motors make their way across the water.

By Alan Yuhas

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

Open hatches or doors?

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

By Veronica Penney

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

Saudi arabia, saudi arabia’s bold plan to ferry people around in flying electric boats.

Avatar for Micah Toll

Saudi Arabia has its sights set on shuttling people around its desert megacity on flying electric boats. While it may sound like science fiction, the wings are already in motion. To achieve its goal, Saudi Arabia even already purchased eight of the Swedish electric boatmaker Candela’s new P-12 electric ferries.

Candela’s electric boats are famous not just for their high efficiency, but rather how they achieve such high efficiency. Candela uses computer-controlled hydrofoils to automatically lift its boats out of the water, making its batteries last much longer while the boats travel faster and farther.

The company got its start with speedboats for recreational boaters, but has since expanded into commercial vessels by applying its technology and designs to multiple sizes of flying ferries.

global 55 yacht

“The P-12 is designed to create zero-emission water transport systems which have significant improvements over traditional water commuting” explained Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela. “Unlike legacy systems with large, slow, and energy-inefficient conventional ferries, the Candela P-12 is a smaller and faster unit, allowing much more frequent departures and quicker journeys for passengers. All daily necessities and services will be just a short boat commute away.”

The Candela P-12 is the model that Saudi Arabia plans to use in its NEOM desert megacity, currently being built along the Red Sea. The city has already purchased eight P-12s, the largest commercial order in Candela’s history.

The vessels are expected to be delivered starting next year.

global 55 yacht

The P-12 was first launched last year and will begin operations as part of Stockholm’s public transit system later this year.

The boat not only reduces the energy required for commercial ferry systems but also offers a much smoother and more comfortable voyage, even over choppy water. Because the boat doesn’t rock or crash over waves and boat wakes, even passengers prone to sea sickness find the ride comfortable.

“We’re extremely proud to provide a vessel system designed with both passengers and the environment in mind. Short waiting times, quick connections, and a very enjoyable experience without taxing the environment with wakes, emissions, and noise will revolutionize how we travel on water,” added Hasselskog.

Heesen delivers brand new 55m charter yacht RELIANCE

By Anna Ingles   24 September 2023

The 55-metre Heesen motor yacht, previously known as Project Gemini and now named RELIANCE , has been successfully delivered, prior to joining the global charter fleet.

Expressing delight over the completion, Heesen stated: "We are thrilled to announce that the 55m Steel YN 19755, motor yacht RELIANCE, has been handed over to a satisfied family. The entire team at Heesen is excited to see this new yacht sailing and extend their best wishes for smooth sailing to the owners and crew."

Aerial overhead view of charter yacht RELIANCE at sea

Available for Mediterranean yacht charters in summer 2024, RELIANCE was launched from the Heesen outfitting shed at the Oss shipyard in October 2022. The luxury charter yacht' s dynamic exterior design is a creation of Omega Architects, while Luca Dini is responsible for the elegant interiors. Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, RELIANCE is part of Heesen's popular 55 Steel series which includes five delivered yachts, among them being VIDA and LAURENTIA .

Aft view of charter yacht RELIANCE, surrounded by sea

Initiating the construction of RELIANCE as a speculative venture, she was bought 15 months into its build by a client who admired the characteristic shark-grey exterior, robust lines, and predatory profile, which has been achieved via a "shark tooth" feature on the superstructure forward.

Although the yacht’s exterior design is the result of a well-established partnership, RELIANCE is the first Heesen crewed yacht charter to feature interiors designed by Luca Dini. The Italian designer and his team have created a sophisticated atmosphere using warm tones and a stylish theme. Boasting several custom features, including a unique layout in the owner's cabin en suite and windows in the transom door for natural light to flood the beach club, RELIANCE is already shaped up to make a splash on the charter market for both family vacations and corporate yacht charters .

Able to accommodate 12 guests in its six generously sized cabins, RELIANCE features an expansive 82-square-meter owner's cabin on the main deck forward and a VIP on the bridge deck. The remaining guest cabins, comprising two doubles and two twins, are situated on the lower deck.

Global plastics treaty: leading ceos call for mandatory rules.

In March 2022 at the fifth session of the UN Environmental Assembly, 175 nations passed Resolution 5/14 to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. This resolution requested the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to convene an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an instrument which would “be based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full cycle of plastic, including its production, design, and disposal.” The goal is to complete the negotiations by the end of this year. The INC has held four sessions. The hope is that the treaty will be agreed in the fifth session on November 25—December 1 in Busan, Republic of Korea.

Discarded plastic waste. Environmental pollution and ecological problems concept.

When it comes to the environment, climate is the overwhelmingly dominant issue in the public discourse. Biodiversity/Nature loss is rapidly arising as a topic and there is a clear relationship between the two. Relatively less general attention has been paid to plastic, but those who know about this issue realize it is an enormously important one that has devastating effects on climate and biodiversity—and thus all of us. A 2022 OECD report estimates that global plastic waste will triple by 2060, from 353 million tons (Mt) in 2019 to 1,014 Mt in 2060. In addition to the serious problems created for human and other life forms from plastic pollution in land and water (as discussed in this short video by Sir David Attenborough), are its implications for global warming. As noted by Shardul Agrawala, Head of the Environment and Economic Integration Division of the OECD Environment Directorate, “GHG emissions from plastics production and end of life are projected to double to 4.3 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents of GHG emissions in 2060.”

Where do all these plastics come from? According to UNEP , about 400 million metric tons of plastic is produced every year, with packaging, such as single-use plastic products for food and beverage containers, as the biggest end market for the material—over one-third of all plastic being produced. Plastic is certainly widely used by the consumer goods industry, so I sat down with some notable CEOs to understand what they are looking for from this plastics treaty.

The CEOs I spoke to are among the 230+ members (including companies, financial institutions, and NGOs) of the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty (the Coalition) which was convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund . The coalition’s objective is to bring together a diverse group of organizations “with a shared ambition towards a circular economy for plastic, and a strong commitment to support an effective, legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution .”

Fisk Johnson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SC Johnson

Trump Signals He May Skip ABC News Debate After Bashing Network

Why artificial intelligence hype isn't living up to expectations, seattle-tacoma airport in the crosshairs of hackers.

What leaps out to me is the last point in the sentence, “legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution” and so I’ve marked it in bold. While admittedly a sweeping generalization, companies aren’t typically eager to embrace regulation, let alone regulation based on a legally binding treaty supported by most of the world’s governments. But in my recent article in the Harvard Business Review , “Moving Beyond ESG,” I note that “regulation is the primary way in which negative externalities are mitigated.” And plastic pollution is currently a big negative externality. Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of global manufacturing company SC Johnson , is clear that regulation is the main lever we need to pull. “You need everyone in the plastic ecosystem working together at scale to solve the issue. The only real way to do that is through regulation, both on an international level and a country level,” he told me.

Voluntary efforts by companies involved in programs such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Commitment are laudable but problematic for two reasons. The first is that only some companies are doing this. The second is that there are limits to what they can do without putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage. Hein Schumacher, CEO of consumer goods company Unilever , agrees. “The good news is that on a voluntary basis, we have made significant progress. The problem is you can't continue on a voluntary basis.”

Hein Schumacher, Chief Executive Officer of Unilever

In light of the drawbacks of the voluntary approach, some countries have or are considering passing laws to deal with this. Examples include the U.K.’s tax on packaging that doesn’t contain at least 30% recycled material, or Nigeria’s ban of some single use plastic items, such as polystyrene foam packaging, which is not widely collected or recycled.

Two problems exist here as well. The first is that these do not exist in some major countries which are big plastics polluters, such as the United States, and even where they do exist, the neighboring country may have a softer approach which simply shifts the problem next door. The second is that this unorganized medley of regulations creates enormous complexity for multinational companies operating in countries where these regulations exist. As Schumacher pointed out, “the patchwork of regulation that we currently have is simply not working.” Johnson agreed by stating that “the emerging web of plastic regulation in various parts of the world is going to add cost and complexity unless there is consistency in rules.”

That’s why the CEOs I spoke to said that having a global and legally binding treaty on plastic is essential. And the Coalition members are strongly, actively, and vocally supporting this. Johnson wants to see an ambitious treaty, especially one that “provides mandatory directions for companies as it relates to product design rules. Having consistency in what we aim for would be enormously helpful to bring economies of scale and make progress on the plastic pollution problem.”

Of course, other stakeholders are weighing in on this and it is important that all voices are heard, but I find it encouraging that the Coalition is putting forward a clear point of view from business. I credit both the UN process and the Coalition for looking to engage productively. This was key to the Montreal agreement on ozone and played a role in the Paris Agreement for climate.

The next step for negotiations is an “intersessional meeting” to be held over four days in Bangkok starting on August 24. Governments will be meeting to seek to make progress on two key topics within the treaty—how to decide on the most problematic plastic products and chemicals used in plastic, which could be phased out, and what design rules for plastic products could be enshrined in the treaty

Despite the time spent negotiating so far, the full scope of the treaty is still being decided. For the Business Coalition members, it is imperative that it include plastic packaging. At the core of this is a set of common product design rules, which could be based on existing voluntary design rules such as the Consumer Goods Forum Golden Design Rules . Some examples of the nine rules are:

· Increase Value in PET recycling by using only clear or transparent blue/green PET and ensuring sleeves and labels are not problematic for recycling.

· Remove problematic elements from packaging, for example by phasing out undetectable carbon black, PVC and PVDC, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and PS (similar to the Nigeria ban).

· Eliminate excess headspace within flexible packaging, with a maximum of 30% or less headspace.

Many companies have agreed to voluntarily follow these rules, already overcoming technical hurdles with practical solutions that the CEOs I spoke to said are ready to scale. As pointed out previously, there will always remain drawbacks with voluntary only efforts. The only way to take them to scale is through mandatory rules.

Thus, it is essential that these design rules, or something like them, be made mandatory through a globally binding treaty. This will spur innovation, but innovation requires investments that pay off over time. If every company is subject to these rules, investors will support the companies making them. As Schumacher points out, “With global rules the business case will become more certain. That’s good for investment.” Tove Andersen, CEO of recycling company TOMRA , agreed that mandatory rules can allow innovation and investment to flourish. “Businesses want and needs regulation to support [efforts on tackling plastic pollution], to give you the framework in place to drive the innovation and investment needed to tackle the problem.”

Tove Andersen, Chief Executive Officer of TOMRA

I’d also like to highlight three other important topics that deserve attention: phasing out problematic and avoidable plastic, (2) implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, and (3) improving waste management.

Aligning countries around phasing out the most problematic and avoidable plastic must be a priority for the treaty. Let’s take an example of something that is widely accepted as a challenging type of plastic—Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC. It is clear it should not be completely phased out across all applications, as it has some good uses, but it is particularly problematic when used in packaging since it is more likely to be incinerated, causing toxic fumes. Unilever has already exited the use of PVC in its plastic packaging portfolio, proving this can be done. But reducing the use of PVC in packaging as much as possible will require mandatory global rules. Schumacher noted that “Now is the moment that could be reinforced by governments through a treaty. So that it is not an implied set of rules, but it’s actually a governed set of rules.”

Much also remains to be done to improve infrastructure for plastics’ collection, reuse, and recycling. These must be funded through globally harmonized EPR schemes which many companies are committed to supporting. In order to deliver on their promise, they must be based on a common, core set of principles that ensure that fees are equally applied to all companies and are appropriately structured based on the actual cost to recycle the material.

When it comes to waste management, we might emphasize that effective systems for waste management and recycling already exist in some countries, but the point is that broader implementation and scaling requires an enabling policy framework. Andersen added, “We have many solutions that you could just roll out tomorrow. Get the regulation in place, make it harmonised and consistent, and you can reduce plastic pollution significantly.”

Chalk board with rules written

The plastics treaty is a live negotiation. What governments decide to do in the coming months could have a significant and lasting impact on our planet. At the upcoming ”intersessional meeting” for the treaty, Johnson hopes progress can be made on binding rules. “At a minimum, I would hope the treaty would have definitions and rules around categories such as product design and elimination of chemicals of concern. Each country could choose to adopt those rules on their own timeline depending on their unique regional circumstances. With global rules, industry would all be moving toward the same goals even though implementation timelines might differ.”

While some progress has been made, clearly some business leaders are concerned that the end agreement will not be ambitious enough. Schumacher was one of those. "I am worried that despite all the progress we’ve made [on plastic packaging], we might not get a treaty that delivers the clarity we need on regulation,” he told me. I’m heartened to see many CEOs personally stepping forward to encourage an agreement with true regulatory power. One that would clearly support businesses’ interests in trying to tackle plastic waste, as well as seek to deal with the root cause of much of plastic pollution—plastic packaging.

An encouraging sign of progress came last week. Reuters reported that there has been a significant positive shift in the U.S. government’s position on the plastics treaty along three dimensions. First, to set a target to reduce the amount of plastic produced. Second, to create a list of harmful chemicals used in plastics which should be phased out. Finally, and for the first time, the U.S. has noted the importance of global rules as preferable to a patchwork of national regulations. I am personally very pleased to see this shift in position. Strong support from the U.S. seems absolutely essential to secure a meaningful global treaty.

The specifications of the superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily have been unearthed as the search for survivors continues.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch ’s Bayesian yacht was hit by a tornado over the ocean – known as a waterspout – off the coast of Porticello fishing village on Monday morning, causing it to sink after the mast snapped.

One person, the yacht’s chef, has been found dead while six others – including Lynch, 59, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer – remain missing .

Christopher Morvillo, a lawyer for Clifford Chance, also remains unaccounted for.

The British-flagged Bayesian had 22 people on board, including 10 crew members. Now footage taken of the yacht in 2021 has reemerged.

Superyacht Times previously wrote a profile piece about the vessel, which was built by Italian firm Perini Navi and launched in 2008.

Details of the Bayesian

The yacht is 55.9m long and is 11.51m at its beam (widest point), a draught (depth of the vessel below the waterline) of 9.73m and an internal volume of 473 GT (gross tonnage).

Bayesian has an aluminium hull and superstructure, and is powered by two engines which give a top speed of 15.6 knots, with a cruising speed of 13 knots.

Its 57,000-litre fuel tanks mean it has a range of up to 3,600 nautical miles, and has water tanks storing up to 14,000 litres of fresh water, YachtCharterSalute reports .

The 'Bayesian' sailing boat, in Palermo, Sicily, Italy.

Its interior architecture was designed by Rémi Tessier and most recently refitted in 2020. The cabins feature stunning modern bathrooms, and sleek wooden furniture with metal and accents.

The yacht previously sailed under the name ‘Salute’, and in total it has a capacity for 12 passengers and 10 crew.

There are six cabins below deck including one master cabin, three double and two twins.

The Bayesian has the largest aluminium mast and the second-tallest mast overall in the world, measuring in at 75m tall.

Its forward seating area can be converted into a fully enclosed glass veranda.

Laurentia: The 55m superyacht built with the help of Whatsapp

A busy prospective owner, a nearly finished Heesen and hundreds of WhatsApp messages. Cécile Gauert tells the very modern story of the making of Laurentia ...

Although it’s not unheard of, it is still rare for a client to buy a superyacht sight unseen. Laurentia , a 55 metre Heesen started on spec and resold in the late stages of construction, is a great example of how this can happen, and with happy results.

“In all my years as a broker this is the first time when everything was done via WhatsApp messaging,” says Barin Cardenas, founder and president of The New Yachts Company . “The buyer never once visited the yard or visited the boat in person.”

The future owner, a fiercely private person, was not uninterested in the outcome; quite the opposite. He had a lot of knowledge and contributed many of his ideas, Cardenas says. He had narrowed down the search to a new, finished (or nearly so) yacht built at a northern European yard.

As the new yacht market recovered after years of sluggish growth, it was not an easy task. Cardenas and the principal of Miami-based design firm Radyca , who acted as owner’s rep, searched for good options for about 30 months until an “Aha” moment at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2016. Heesen’s 70 metre Galactica Super Nova caught the client’s attention. Unfortunately, she was not for sale and there were no projects of that size available within a short delivery window at Heesen.

The owner’s team began discussing other options with Heesen’s commercial team. The yard’s new 55 metre series offered some of the features the client wanted – room for toys, six cabins and long-range capability among them. So when Project Alida (hull No 2 of Heesen’s 55 metre series) became available, somewhat unexpectedly, the owner’s team went to the shipyard in Oss, the Netherlands, to investigate. “Within an hour our client was reviewing a properly edited film on a private link,” Cardenas says.

The yacht was still in dry dock but nearly finished. All that was needed from the builder’s point of view was to open the water valves and float the yacht out. But it was not to be – at least not right away. “He liked the layout and the bones of the boat. What he did not particularly like was the interior,” Cardenas says. “Boats are supposed to be fun, a place to escape the corporate environment.”

When the client conveyed that he did not like the décor, the team went to work layering different fabrics and finishes, and sketched over photographs they’d just shot to show how Project Alida could become Laurentia , all the while communicating via WhatsApp as the client ran in and out of meetings.

Radyca is a new name in the yachting world, but its team has already designed yacht and aircraft interiors, in addition to several high-end residential and commercial projects. Its office, in one of Miami’s glittering high rises, has been at the heart of the transformation of the financial centre into a vibrant liveable part of the city. The firm’s portfolio includes a vast luxury entertainment centre, which opened recently near Brickell Avenue.

The interior of Laurentia , as it exists now, is the confluence of its lead designer’s and the client’s visions. “The common denominator is that we try to create sophisticated, simple designs, but always warm, cosy and relaxing, which is the purpose of a boat, at least for the clientele that we have,” says the lead designer on the team. “We have never worked with a client who expected a more formal use of the boat.”

An interior rethink is a common experience when stepping into a build at such a late stage. The yacht’s interior had been done for someone else. “It was nice but busy, but it had extremely good bones. We told our client, ‘We think we can make it work’ and he said, ‘OK, make a list of everything you would change without hesitation’. To our huge list he added his own changes. Then he said, ‘Go back to Heesen. If they can deliver that in time for me to use this summer, we have a deal.’ And ‘that’ included relocating the [spa pool], adding awnings, changing a bulkhead on the sky lounge. It was huge surgery.”

The white oak with wenge accents on the surrounding bulkheads remained, as did taps, mirrors and vanity units. But “we changed all the flooring, ceiling panels, fabrics, all the leathers, all the wallpapers, any feature wall and all loose furniture.” The large and beautiful master suite, the largest of six cabins on board, was stripped of its finishes almost entirely. “What was dark we made light, what was light we made dark,” the designer says with a laugh. “We were just stubborn.”

One of the biggest jobs, which involved metal work, was the reconfiguration of the sundeck and the spa pool, which was rotated to create a huge, private sunbed area and carve out space “for a champagne or tapas bar”. More changes happened on the main deck aft, where the seating area was expanded and reconfigured to accommodate an outdoor cinema , and the lower deck, where the large beach club had gym equipment added. One of the most complex tasks, surprisingly, was fitting a copper light fixture to the curved walls of the redesigned staircase. “This whole thing [the staircase] was the most challenging for Heesen. That and the bulkhead in the sky lounge [which was redone to take out a secondary crew passage and install a 2.2 metre mirror television in the reconfigured upper saloon],” the designer says.

“The structure of the stairs was there, but they had to take the whole thing out and rebuild every single step, do the millwork and the wall panels again; it was like a puzzle. We added stainless steel overhead, added the lighting underneath. They had to do electricity, wood, metal, leather, bringing all the trades in this tiny spot.” And it all had to be done in a compressed time period. After the first meeting – “a long day in Oss,” as Cardenas describes it – there followed two months of negotiating and drawing and four months of work. “It was extremely quick,” Radyca’s lead designer says.

To the credit of the builders, by August Laurentia was on her way. “It demonstrates the flexibility of the yard to be able to react in a quick manner and give the owner what he’s looking for,” says Thom Conboy, Heesen’s director of sales for North America. “It’s not ideal for the yard; the ideal situation is to have the boat sold a year or more before delivery so the client still gets all personalisation.” But the silver lining is that Heesen got two 55 metre yachts sold within a few weeks – Project Alida’s former owner decided to buy a later hull to have more breathing room in the construction schedule. “It was luck and great timing,” Conboy says.

What made this possible is that Heesen does nearly all of its own yacht interiors from two large furniture shops, including one off site near the German border, enabling the yard to keep control over its usually aggressive production schedule. Her unconventional story, and an interior by a design firm with a track record as impressive as its public profile is low, made Laurentia intriguing but she proved elusive. It was the end of the Caribbean season by the time I caught up with Laurentia and her crew of 13 in St Lucia’s Marigot Bay. The yacht was easy to spot against the backdrop of the emerald bay and a colourful local flotilla of fishing and excursion craft.

While resort dwellers craned their necks for a better look of the very private beauty from the nearby Capella resort, the crew was in full prep mode for the imminent trek north-west to Bermuda, then across to the Azores, Gibraltar and eventually to southern France. The captain had already brought Laurentia across the Atlantic and was looking forward to his “20th or so” transatlantic journey.

“She is designed for long-distance cruising,” he says. “She is very comfortable, very stable.” The naval architecture is by Van Oossanen, which made use of its patented Fast Displacement Hull Form. The 55 metre series is the first application of this hull to a full displacement yacht. “A traditional full displacement hull, while efficient at cruising speed, becomes very inefficient at hull speed,” Perry van Oossanen says. “When we tried the fast displacement hull, we discovered we could extend the top speed a bit without stretching the engines too much.”

This hull form resulted from an extensive parametric study that used computational fluid dynamics (CFD), this time “aimed more at efficient cruising than a high maximum speed”. Besides efficiency and low resistance, the studies also focused on comfort, especially roll at anchor. The yacht has large fins by Naiad, installed forward of centre, but Van Oossanen prefers not to reveal the details of what makes the hull so efficient. “There are some secrets of the trade in the fine tuning of the round bilge displacement hull, the bow, how you distribute the volume; it’s subtle differences with big advantages,” he says.

Some exterior features were streamlined from the first 55 metre for more efficient construction. “It’s a typical Omega design,” says Frank Laupman, the firm’s CEO, “because basically she is very simple. There is not a lot of engineering the yard needs to do – no wing door, no hatches – so she can be efficiently built. My background is from industry and, while I really like to create to owners’ ideas, I am passionate when it comes to shipbuilder requirements. I thrive for efficiency and rational design.”

The biggest difference from hull No 1 is the layout. There’s an open tender bay on the foredeck instead of an enclosed tender garage on the lower deck, which allowed for a large beach club. “Like any of our platform boats, the design continues to evolve,” Conboy says. The mast, which lowers from view when the boat is at anchor, doubles as a crane to lift off two 6.2 metre Castoldi tenders. And then there is deep storage for jet skis and other toys.  Laurentia , which will be selectively available for charter, has plenty.

The tweaking was a success from all angles. The owner, who finally got to see the yacht about six weeks after the contract’s signature, is reportedly very happy and the yacht’s relaxed and elegant interior was even nominated World Superyacht Award . But it is nearly as satisfying to witness how the confluence of technology and of a streamlined yacht-building process can change the way business is done. “Technology, if used correctly, might just save this old-school industry,” Cardenas says.
