The lowdown
GYC lays the down-market BK ironica on thick: the name; cheap cans of PBR; food served on paper plates. But none of the neighborhood’s hipster drinkers mind, and it’s no wonder. The low-key, beach-frontish vibe, the entirely open-air environs (on a corner where it’s easy to inadvertently enter the bar thinking you were descending into the subway), and the festive throng make this an ideal place to while away a sunny summer afternoon or warm evening slugging back beers without breaking the bank. Because it lacks any indoor space, GYC is open only from late spring to early autumn — which means locals make sure to cram in as much quality time here as they can during the limited schedule. The roster of bars in this hood is surprisingly segmented — one type hangs out exclusively here, another exclusively there — but everyone comes together at Gowanus Yacht Club, where the sand-in-your-flip-flops, sit-on-your-beach-towel-so-you-don’t-get-the-chair-wet aesthetic is utterly irresistible.

Fabulous bbq'd hot dogs and great beer. Laid back cool place with nice staff. I'll raise it to five stars if/when they allow dogs. It's legal in NYS now so I don't understand why an 100pct outdoor place hasn't gotten the message yet. Cool is uncool without my four leg bff. http://gothamist.com/2015/10/27/dogs_have_their_day.php.
No initiation fees, no dockage fees, nothing really except for decent cheap beers (Tallboys galore) and outdoor seating, along with a smattering of "aged hipsters" to quote a previous yelper. All in all it's a pretty good spot -- you don't get the BS of some (post-colonial) Williamsburg hipstars who scorn your non-limited edition, zappos-bought, scuffed gray Saucony's. The beers are cheap and it's outdoors in a great neighborhood. And, for some wacky reason beyond my intuition, it makes me want to linger and potentially consume a few beyond what I should. My designated driver, the F train, never complains. I guess there's food but that brings early-onset sobriety so I haven't taken that risk.

Really hip cheap place eat if you are near the subway station. It is only outdoor seating and its super hipster, food is cheap and the quality is OK, it tastes like everything they get is from a supermarket, it's picnic flavored, that's a good or bad thing. Pitchers will run you around 20 which is cool, white Afro was great! The cook however was really irritating, he always starred at me as if I were doing something wrong, he also did not seem very happy. All in all, super chill ambiance, I will definitely be back soon!
I've been itching to come here for a while, but of course every time it's a nice day, this concrete sliver of joy is packed. Last week on a beautiful night I pulled the trigger and stopped in. It was perfect, there were maybe 15 people hanging out, so room to get a table and some sun and some delicious cold beer. The bartender's temperament was perfect, he took orders at the table and brought them over quickly. Beer ranged from cheap ($3 Rolling Rock) to some decent craft brews (around $7). Hot dogs and other similar fair was all cheap as well. It was a great spot to just chill out. My only hope is to be able to get in the door.
For the yelpers that have said that the Gowanus Yacht Club is dirty, kinda smelly, cheap, food aint great, wine is warm, etc.... I have this to say to you - YOU'RE RIGHT and that's why it gets 4 stars. Well, kind of... it actually gets four stars because it's just perfect for the summer. You're outside, drinkin either $3 PBR's or a great $6 local IPA on tap (i.e. Six Point Sweet Action). I think they serve food in case you've had one too many and you need to eat something ASAP, but to trash the Gowanus Yacht Club because the food isn't great??? That's just wrong, because you aren't here for the food, you're here for the brews (cheap PBR or a good beer on tap), the sun, the people, etc. Oh, and why 4 but not 5 stars??? Because I'm an IPA guy and I just don't enjoy a brew as much when it's served in a plastic cup - it has to be in a proper pint glass!
reading all the negative reviews for this place reminds me of the negative reviews for Cooper 35: people clearly didn't have the right expectations -- or intentions -- when they made gowanus yacht club their destination. as other (and smarter) reviewers have commented, the very cheapness of this spot is what makes it so great. i get to sit outside? perfect. you're only going to charge me $4 for my hard cider and $5 for my knockwurst? fantastic. you're going to answer my friend's question "what's this beer like?" with nothing more than "good"? i love it. and you're not gonna charge us for all of our drinks when we finally get our bill? i love you. my only problem is that i didn't go here when i lived just a few blocks away, but luckily it's a pleasant walk from park slope.
Hey so i guess "nachos with real liquid cheese" become a selling point somewhere down the line. Look: i know it's bar food, but must we be trucker-hat-ironic about eeeverything?
Gowanus Yacht Club, I like you... I really, really do. The exact reasons for my affections are fuzzy but I think it involves you, allowing me to be the asshole that I am with no judgment. And you are the humble type of hot mess that I will always be attracted to. Let's fall in love all over again this summer, then take a break, then start again next spring. It works for me if it works for you. Honesty is the backbone of our affair, because let's face it, neither of us are good at pretending to be something we're not.

The Gowanus Yacht Club is nothing like any yacht club we've ever seen. The picnic tables and dingy atmosphere make for the perfectly terrible experience everyone in Brooklyn knows and loves. This place is so perfectly awful, we just keep coming back for more. If you want to feel like you're grilling out with friends and drinking beers on a hot Summer day, you've come to the right place. The Gowanus Yacht Club has a large selection of cheap cans and a great menu of traditional American grillin' food.

In a city overrun with excessively styled nightspots, there’s a lot to be said for the “come in and drink beer” manifesto of one seasonal haunt. Squeezed next to an F-G subway entrance and Bagels by the Park, the GYC an outdoor beer garden for ironic, scruffy types has a garage sale–meets–fraternity house decor. On cool nights, bartenders may fire up the potbellied stove to take the chill off. The half-barrel grill is usually glowing, so you can chow down on bockwurst, then slake your thirst with a pitcher of Dentengem’s Witbier.

The Gowanus Yacht Club's name is strictly tongue-in-cheek. It is not near the water and calling it a dive is generous. That being said, on a beautiful summer day, you can't find a much better place to hang out and smash a few cold beers. It is completely outdoors and super cramped, but once you get a seat the service is fast.
