The Mediterranean Yacht Show (MEDYS) is one of the most important charter yacht shows in the Mediterranean, and it has returned for its spectacular 7th edition at Nafplion, Greece , after a two-year absence due to the worldwide pandemic.

This highly respected event for industry professionals ran from 30th April to 4th May 2022, organised by the  Greek Yachting Association with the support of the Municipality of Nafplion. 90 registered yachts were in attendance and together they filled the designated show space, leaving on a waiting list another 20 luxury charter yachts that were hoping to show off their amenities, living areas and talented crews.

MEDYS had 30 countries from across the world represented, and the 31 exhibitors showcased essential and innovative yacht-related products and services. Over 610 yacht brokers attended the 2022 edition, among them brokers from CharterWorld, including Trina Howes . Over the five-day event, she took the opportunity to examine the vessels up close, and learn more about their crews and the services each charter vessel can offer its future guests.

The event was held online as the first Virtual Yacht Charter Show in 2020 and 2021, however, these digital editions could not capture one of the most anticipated highlights of the physical event: The Chefs’ Competition. The panel of judges consisted of experienced yacht brokers and Angelo Lantos, who is the chef of the 2 Michelin-starred restaurants Spondi, and Thanos Stasinos, the chef of restaurants Huracan in Athens, Pacific in Monte Carlo and Ritz Carlton in Valencia.

“The Chefs’ Competition was a lot of fun,” commented Trina Howes. “It was so hard to choose a favourite as they delivered tasty vegan dishes almost across the board. It was a terrific opportunity to see each chef’s creativity come to the table, and charter clients in Greece will not be disappointed.”

The Greece charter grounds have always been a favourite destination for luxury yachts, where myriad islands that would otherwise be out of reach are now just an afternoon nap away. From the otherworldly beauty of the Ionian Islands and the sailing haven of the Saronic Gulf to the partying and Scuba diving wonders of the Cyclades and the multi-cultural Dodecanese Islands , a single visit will leave you wondering what else there is to find.

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Yacht show highlights from Greece

This Spring, we have been busy attending global crewed yacht shows in both Greece and Turkey .

Between us, we have managed to attended the Mediterranean Yacht show (MEDYS) in Nafplio, the East Mediterranean Yacht Show (EMMYS) in Poros, Greece and, finally, the TYBA Yacht show in Gocek, Turkey.

While we were there, we got to inspect over 150 boats varying in type, size and age. We were able to speak with crews and get to know them on a personal level. All of which helped us to know each of the boats we would recommend to you. Attending these shows has been incredibly beneficial. It also allowed us to network with other brokers and attend seminars lead by industry experts. The latest trends are revealed, new ideas exchanged and experiences shared.

Below is a selection of our favourites from the shows in Greece; the MEDYS and the EMMYS.

MEDYS YATCH SHOW BEST CHEF COMPETITION

The yearly MEDYS Chefs’ Competition provides attending chefs with the opportunity to enter and showcase their exceptional skills and creativity. Every year the competing chefs are given a specific challenge and this year the focus was on being environmentally friendly. The 2023 theme was ‘Zero Waste from the Greek Sea’. Chefs had to prepare a dish that used ingredients from the Greek seas in their entirety- no waste.

greece charter yacht show

The winner of the 2023 Chef’s Competiton was Manolis Perros chef of motor yacht ZEN . This came as no surprise as chef Manolis is an exceptional chef who was awarded second place in 2022. We were fortunate enough to speak with Manolis. We were touched by just how much it meant to him to have won. He was incredibly humble and spoke with such passion about the dishes he had produced.

motor yacht charter Zen

Motor Yacht Zen is a fantastic motor yacht that can accommodate up to nine guests. It has one Master cabin, one VIP cabin and two twin cabins (both convertible). Zen is spacious, comfortable and stylish. The perfect yacht to explore Greece, while enjoying Chef Perros’s delicious culinary delights.

EMMYS YACHT SHOW BEST CHEF COMPETITION

For the East Med Multihull Yacht Show, the Chefs’ Competition was celebrating everything Greece has to offer. The theme for competing chefs was Greek Fusion. “Greek cuisine is characterized by its timelessness and the variety of its recipes. Coming to the present day, we create traditional dishes with new techniques, combining ingredients and cultures from all over the world. Our goal is that, by seeing it, it does not remind us of a traditional recipe, but by tasting it, it awakens our taste memories.”

greece charter yacht show

The 2023 winner of the EMMYS Chef’s Competition was Chef Savvas Lichanidis from catamaran ABOVE & BEYOND . Considered one of Greece’s most promising chefs, Chef Lichanidis has an impressive CV filled with experience working at Michelin star restaurants, prestigious hotels and a selection of charter yachts. In 2022, Chef Lichanidis won first place in the Platinum MEDYS Chef Competition. He is a young chef to watch.

yacht charter Greece Above & Beyond saloon

Catamaran Above & Beyond is a 2019 Sunreef 8 catamaran that offers exceptional living space. Up to eight guests can stay on board in four comfortable, modern cabins and soak up the unforgettable panoramic views from the saloon as well as from the on-deck jacuzzi. Sleek and sophisticated, Above & Beyond offers fantastic sailing with no compromise on luxury.

Our yacht show top picks

MAMMA MIA : OUR TOP CREWED MOTOR YACHT

Despite seeing so many spectacular motor yachts on show in Nafplion, there was a clear stand-out favourite for us: MAMMA MIA . From the outside she looks similar to her impressive competition, however, as soon as you step into the interior it is clear we are looking at something special.

motor yacht charter Mamma Mia

Crisp, white and modern, her interiors washed a sense of calm over you as soon as you stepped foot indoors. Despite their modern styling, Mamma Mia still felt warm, soulful and welcoming with the fabric sofas and tactile wooden flooring. Modern art added pops of colour and interest to the walls without distracting from the main event, the stunning panoramic view out of the windows. The attention to detail was fantastic. Outside, two large dining tables offered ample choice for al fresco dining. There were multiple sun lounging options, some shaded others not. The fly bridge was very spacious and it was easy to imagine groups of charter guests having a fantastic evening watching the sunset from the bar.

yacht charter Mamma Mia master cabin

The crew were as inviting as the yacht itself. We enjoyed our time on board and despite continuing on to view other beautiful yachts we were unable to get Mamma Mia out of our minds.

AIZU : OUR TOP CREWED SAILING YACHT

luxury yacht charter Aizu

What really made sailing yacht AIZU stand out from its competition was its fantastic crew who have been on board for many years. Captain Bjorn has worked on board for over 14 years, 12 as Captain. Hostess Elena has been on board for 6 years and counting. Their expert knowledge and love of the beautiful Aizu was clear to anyone stepping on board to take a closer look. This experienced crew not only know the boat inside and out but also know the perfect sailing routes and itineraries.

luxury alfresco dining Aizu

Sailing yacht Aizu also stood out because of her wonderful outside areas. The deck area offered many possibilities to any guests visiting, from deck seating to sunbathing. The large outside table was spacious and comfortable; the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal and admire the stunning scenery.

HYDRUS : OUR TOP CREWED CATAMARAN

catamaran yacht charter Hydrus

It was a delight to be on board catamaran HYDRUS not only in the show but also for a short familiarisation charter once the show ended. Brand new for the 2023 charter season, Hydrus was immaculate, incredibly comfortable and beautifully designed. The 2023 built Lagoon 55 has 5 cabins (4 doubles and 1 convertible twin cabin) which are all very spacious, especially for a catamaran of its size. The three crew on board were all amazing and I cannot go without mentioning the incredible chef, Babis. Every meal he created was delicious—we’re still dreaming about his salads!

luxury yacht charter Hydrus cuisine

Being able to attend the boat shows is one of the highlights of working within this marvellous industry. Being able to see the boats first hand enables us to feel as our guests would feel when they first step on board. We love to be impressed and we certainly were at the each and every one of the shows we attended!

Your guide to the Mediterranean Yacht Show 2024

Published 12 January 2023

The summer charter season kicks off in customary fine style with the Mediterranean Yacht Show (MEDYS). During the final few days of April, the Greek Yachting Association brings together some of the very best superyachts available to charter both in Greece and elsewhere in the Eastern Mediterranean , at this industry-only trade event.

What else can I do in Nafplion?

For those attending the show or planning a yacht charter in the area, Nafplion has plenty to offer all those who step ashore. Built on a peninsula and in a well-fortified position, the city has been inhabited since ancient times and still has the architectural remnants of the Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman empires.

Take a lovely wander into Nafplion's town centre and admire the beautiful architecture

As an important seaport, the city was ruled by a succession of warring Italian royal houses during the Middle Ages. It eventually became part of the Republic of Venice and then later was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and became part of the Ottoman empire. It was in the 19th century though that it really became prosperous, when Nafplion became the first official capital of the newly established Greek state, the First Hellenic Republic.

Visit the island of Bourtzi and its historical fortress

Nafplion was where the country’s first king was crowned, and where its first prime minister was brutally assassinated. Today, Nafplion is however better known for its charming town centre and the Venetian architecture and neo-classical buildings that were built for the merchants, scientists, scholars and wealthy Greeks who settled here.

Explore the old town

Often described as the Venetian empire’s ‘Naples of the East’, the old town of Nafplion is like a bigger version of Plaka in Athens, but without the crowds. The streets are barely visited by vehicles, and instead are best discovered on foot or by bicycle. The main square, known as Syntagma Square, is one of the best-preserved 19th century town squares in all of Greece. Paved in marble, before being renamed it was originally known as Platanos Square owing to the huge Plane Tree which still sits proudly at its centre. Surrounded by historical buildings housing a variety of cafés, boutiques, bars and restaurants.

Make sure to visit Nafplion's Syntagma Square and admire the buildings historical beauty

Syntagma is where you will find locals going about their daily chores in the early morning and of course socialising in the evening. Alternatively, the big square at the waterfront is also a great place to head for a sun downer at one of the cafés or bars that has views over the Bourtzi. This fortified isle, which has become a kind of mascot for the city, was first built on and fortified by the Venetians in the 15th century to protect the entrance to the harbour. It has at various times been a prison, a hotel, and is currently a music venue with a unique outlook.

Climb to Palamidi Fortress

Dominating Nafplion, the Palamidi Fortress sits above the old town and is a landmark symbol for the freedom of Greeks. Built by the Venetians in the early 18th century, and later adapted and further expanded by the Ottomans, the imposing stone building is made up of three separate fortresses walled together.

Make a day of it and visit the Palamidi Fortress

There are allegedly a total of 999 steps leading up to the fortress, which is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset during the summer months. It is well worth the climb for the spectacular views over the city, the bay and the surrounding countryside, and be sure to count those steps!

Try the local cuisine

The wider area of Nafplion produces a wide variety of produce commonly found in the Mediterranean diet, including fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Seafood is also of course plentiful, and a fresh catch is always available at any of the seaside tavernas.

Take a trip down to the food markets in Nafplion

Locally grown artichoke is one of the main ingredients used in many local recipes, including home-made pastas and trachanas (sour milk and wheat boiled together and then dried in the sun to form the base of a soup). Honey-based pastries and other local sweet treats are also part of the local diet.

Treat your tastebuds to the sweet and nutty flavours of Greek Baklava

For a true taste of Nafplion, why not reserve a table at the family owned Mezedopoleio O Noulis. Serving authentic Greek cuisine, Noulis offers seasonal menus using locally sourced ingredients, including local dishes such as lamb with artichokes, and octopus in red wine sauce.

Embrace the smell and flavours of Greek cuisine

For seafood, head to the nautically themed taverna Arapakos on the waterfront. Here the menu features catch of the day along with traditional accompaniments such as taramosalata and tzatziki.

  • Gary King's sexual misconduct scandal risks the future of Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
  • Producers failed to address the controversy, leading to potential show cancelation.
  • To avoid cancellation, the show may need a revamp without Gary as a featured cast member.

Gary King is one of the most prominent cast members from Below Deck Sailing Yacht , but last season's scandal might have put the hit Bravo spin-off in danger. Captain Glenn Shephard leads the crew aboard the Parsifal III, and many popular faces such as Chief Stew, Daisy Kelliher, and Colin Macrae have appeared in the series. However, Gary's love triangle with Daisy and Colin is the least of his worries, given the handling of his sexual misconduct scandal.

The sexual misconduct accusations against Gary stem from an incident reported by Samantha Suarez, a makeup artist who worked on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. According to Samantha, the incident occurred in the summer of 2022 during filming. Allegedly, Samantha escorted a heavily intoxicated Gary back to his hotel room following a confessional interview when he began behaving erratically. Samantha claimed that Gary prevented her from leaving, grabbing her from behind, which left her feeling threatened. Production should be nervous ahead of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 .

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Producers Should Have Spoken Out After Gary King Scandal

Their statement wasn't enough.

Producers should have spoken out after Gary's scandal with Samantha , but they didn't, adding to the controversy. While it's true that Bravo and the production team behind Below Deck issued a statement addressing the allegations , claiming that they take workplace safety seriously and that the concerns raised by Samantha were investigated, it was too little, too late.

The network failed to hold Gary accountable, especially since he was allegedly allowed to return for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, which has yet to air. The backlash against Gary has likely contributed to the slow rollout of the season , adding to the prospect of cancelation. A halfhearted statement from Bravo simply wasn't enough.

Due to of production's lack of action, the controversy surrounding Gary has put Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 in danger. Although the season was filmed, its release has been delayed, and there is speculation that it may be heavily edited to minimize Gary's presence. It's possible the entire season could get scrapped if Gary can't be edited out effectively.

Bravo Never Really Addressed The Gary Scandal

They swept it under the rug.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht producers never really addressed the Gary scandal, hoping that sweeping the accusations under the rug would make the problem go away. However, they didn't do enough damage control. Bravo producers disinvited Gary from BravoCon, adding to the probability of editing him out of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 or scrapping the season entirely.

The best thing Bravo can do now is fire Gary from the Below Deck franchise and hope to save Below Deck Sailing Yacht without him.

Gary’s future within the Below Deck franchise appears unlikely. The backlash against him has been intense, and while he has had some support from fellow cast member Daisy, it seems unlikely that he will be able to recover his reputation. His removal from BravoCon is proof that the network is distancing itself from him, but it might not be enough to save the spin-off.

This scandal has highlighted the responsibility of reality TV productions in handling misconduct. The show's production team intervened during Below Deck Down Under season 2 when a similar situation occurred, resulting in the firing of Bosun Luke Jones. Netflix's Love Is Blind 's production team has also faced accusations about the mishandling of sexual harassment, including Renee Poche's disastrous engagement to Carter Wall and Tran Dang's lawsuit.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Should Undergo a Revamp To Avoid Getting Canceled

Season 5 needs to be scrapped.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht needs a revamp if the network doesn't want the show to get canceled. If it's true that the season was filmed, production would be better off scrapping the season and starting new without Gary. While that's undoubtedly a huge loss for the network, Gary shouldn't be a featured cast member anymore . His sexual misconduct was inexcusable, and he's had issues in the past with professionalism, harassment, and alcohol abuse. Gary has been given too many chances.

If the network is unwilling to scrap Below Deck Sailing Yach t season 5 and start over, it might be time to scrap the spin-off. Below Deck , Below Deck Mediterranean , and Below Deck Down Under are already incredibly successful, and a popular cast member like Daisy could find a home in one of the other franchises. If Bravo had come out ahead of Gary's scandal, production could have saved the Parsifal III and Captain Glenn. However, they didn't do enough to mitigate it, leading to a possible cancellation. Gary is certainly to blame.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is available to stream on Peacock.

Parsifal III: Meet the star of Below Deck's sailing yacht spin-off

As the 54 metre superyacht Parsifal III returns to screens for season three of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , her owner Kim Vibe-Petersen talks through the realities of filming a reality TV series on board his boat.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is a spin-off series of the hit superyacht reality TV show Below Deck that follows the lives of the crew and guests across an eight-week charter season. This week, producers confirmed the show will return for a third season of crew drama and on-the-water antics with Perini Navi sailing yacht Parsifal III in the starring role and Captain Glenn Shephard at the helm.

For Danish owner Kim Vibe-Petersen, Parsifal III' s return is yet another opportunity to show off the yacht's charter credentials. Vibe-Petersen was personally approached by Below Deck producers in 2018 after they struggled to find a suitable sailing yacht. Parsifal III fitted the bill as she was already equipped for charter and a number of her existing crew were willing to take part in the show.

The Perini Navi sailing yacht first hit the water in 2005 and rose to instant fame scoring a number of prestigious accolades including a coveted Neptune at the World Superyacht Awards. On her launch she also joined the ranks as one of the fast Perini Navi superyachts on the water with a top speed of 18 knots under full sail granted by two high-tech carbon masts, automated in-boom furling and a winged keel.

Vibe-Petersen admitted there were some yacht owners who didn’t want the names of their yachts connected with the drama-filled reality show, but he “didn’t have that concern.” Although he had the option to change the yacht’s name for filming, he decided to keep it to maximise the charter appeal of  Parsifal III .

“It’s free advertising,” he said. “The name of the yacht will come to people’s minds, especially to someone who has never chartered a yacht before. They will see that name and know the boat from the show.”

Vibe-Petersen was also keen to secure a guaranteed packed charter schedule during low season. “I think there were a lot of boats that did not want to be chartered for the show but it's good money in the bank,” he said.

While admitting he might not be the “specific audience targeted by the series,” he said he has sat down to watch the first series, which took place in Corfu. Even in Vibe-Peterson’s home country of Denmark, the US show has gained a big following.

“This is the kind of show where they want to make a little drama,” he added. “It’s not that wild on board a normal charter.” The conveyor belt of colourful guests are chosen by the production team and given a “big discount” for appearing on the show.

Vibe-Petersen also explained the complicated logistics of filming Below Deck , each season of which features 16 charters filmed across a period of eight weeks. This means that two groups of guests separately charter the yacht in a single week. Meanwhile, the production team require a time period of at least a week to get  Parsifal III  rigged up and fit for filming. “There are 30 people on board each day with lots of wires and cameras – it’s a big, big operation."

Season one was filmed in Corfu, Greece, which posed a number of challenges for  Parsifal III as the sailing yacht was required to have a specific charter licence. “It’s pretty tough to get that,” said Vibe-Petersen. “It’s not something we can do within a short amount of time. It can take 10 to 12 weeks to get a charter licence so it takes time.”

For her second season, Parsifal III was filmed cruising Croatia's 3,600 miles of coastline. This season, the show will follow Parsifal III as she cruises around the Spanish island of Menorca, carrying a mix of new and old crew. Returning faces include chief stew Daisy Kelliher, chief engineer Colin MacRae, and first mate Gary King while new chef Marcos Spaziani will grace the screen for the first time together with second stew Gabriela Barragan, third stew Ashley Marti and deckhands Kelsie Goglia and Tom Pearson.
