Model yacht club sets sail in North Naples

Members of the Naples Model Yacht Club 108 are quick to point out that size doesn't matter when it comes to remote control sailboat racing.

Twice a week, these sailors launch at the pond across from Physician's Regional Healthcare System, behind the Vineyards Property Management building, for two hours of serious regatta competition.

'It's fun, it's quiet, it's photogenic and non-polluting,' says race chairman Jack Wubbe, a Michigan transplant who moved to Naples four years ago. 'It's a great sport that doesn't bother anyone.'

Members sail from 10 a.m.-noon, every Saturday and Wednesday, at the corner of Vineyards and Napa boulevards, creating a picturesque scene for passers-by.

Wubbe is no stranger to full-size sailing, either. His family owned and managed a marina in Michigan and he once captained his own full-size sailboat prior to racing these scaled-down, remote-controlled versions.

Members race Soling 1-meter kit boats, which can be found at local hobby shops. They also use EC-12, Seawind Marblehead boats and 36/600 Footies.

'You can build it yourself, or they can build it for you,' Wubbe explains of the kits.

Formed in 1985, the club has more than 60 members, the majority of whom are active retirees, including year-round residents and snowbirds.

'Come January, we have 25 to 30 boats on the water,' Wubbe says.

Members pay dues of just $10 a year to cover postage and other costs including club awards and trophies at the end of the season.

A crew of sailors from the local club travel throughout the United States, competing for national titles. Wubbe is preparing for a three-week competition in Detroit and has traveled as far away as New Zealand to garner top honors in RC Yachting World competitions.

Local racing rules are similar to those used in the American Model Yachting Association and the International Racing Federation.

'Bumping is not allowed, but it happens,' he says.

Despite the yachts' smaller size, it's not always smooth sailing for the RC boats.

'Every once in awhile, we'll lose a mast while racing,' says Wubbe. 'We wait for it to drift to shore, but the winds will generally blow it into shore.'

Speaking of blowing, Wubbe says the club is affected by hurricanes and tropical storms, although it's not boat damage that concerns them.

'They mess up our marks,' he says. 'The race directors get together with a couple of other guys with an inflatable boat and rearrange the marks.'

Fellow racers Walter Bortko and Dick Mulvey don't let their marks' recent movement ruffle their sails.

'I do this for camaraderie and it doesn't take a lot of energy -- it's all in your fingers,' says the 78-year-old Bortko. 'They'll swear for fouling their boats, but it's all about having fun.'

Small plastic wiffle balls dot the tops of each racer's RC antenna to prevent damage from an inadvertent hit to a fellow racer's eyes. Some racers wear boots to stay dry while retrieving their boats.

When not sailing the waters of the Vineyards, Naples Model Yacht Club 108 members can also be found at Island Walk and Village Walk. Their race schedule can be viewed online at www.orgsites.com/fl/nmyc/ and they welcome new members to come sail away with them.

The Naples club has an active year-round racing schedule for EC-12’s. The club has 60 members, of which 25 sail EC-12’s. The club sails four other classes. Most members also sail a Soling.

The Venue is on a large lake in the gated community of “VillageWalk”. There are no obstructions in the lake and no large buildings casting a wind shadow on the course. There are shade trees at the launch area. On site facilities include a restaurant and air conditioned bathrooms. Visitors to the site are welcomed.

Question 1: Why do I need to join AMYA before joining NMYC?

Answer 1: We partner with AMYA to secure pond owner insurance of $1M coverage and up to $1M for each claim. Because over 60 clubs like ours partner with AMYA we are able to secure liability coverage for the pond owner and this helps us secure ponds to race our boats on at a very reasonable annual cost.

Question 2: Why do I have to learn the Racing Rules of Sailing?

Answer 2: Consider the analogy of driving a car...you need to know the rules in order to drive safely in a crowded environment. Many times we have 15 boats racing toward a windward mark so it is important that we all know and understand the basic "rules of the road".

Answer 3: Start out by checking the classified section of this website. We post pictures of boats for sale as a service for our club members.
